Der Band, dessen Titel Programm ist, geht auf eine Hallesche Konferenz zu Schnabel im Jahr 2002 zurück. Er unternimmt es, das Werk eines Autors, über den man bis heute nur sehr wenig weiß, über die gattungsspezifischen, diskursiven und philosophiegeschichtlichen Bezüge der Texte umfassend zu beleuchten. Geboten werden auf diese Weise sowohl eine Vielzahl von Kontextuierungsmöglichkeiten als auch ein Blick auf Schnabels Œuvre insgesamt, von dem folglich, wie häufig der Fall, nicht nur die ersten Bücher der Wunderlichen Fata (‚Insel Felsenburg‘) zur näheren Betrachtung kommen. Dies darf als großes Verdienst des Bandes gelten. Daß dabei keine zusammenhängende Interpretation, sondern jeweils aspektbezogene, durchaus miteinander konkurrierende Bilder des Werkes entstehen, ist dem Format der Aufsatzsammlung geschuldet.
