This panel will highlight and celebrate the life and work of John Karat, who passed away from pancreatic cancer last year. We will discuss his many contributions to the SIGCHI community, as well as the wider international community of people doing work in this area, focusing on both his scientific achievements and service contributions.

In an electronic learning environment learners may find a diversity of resources of a generic nature: books in a library, experiences in a laboratory, videos, techniques, or tools. Electronic learning environments should be well structured and devoted to a certain learning domain and a certain type of learning activities, to allow learners to identify the resources and to contribute to the learning experiences of their peers. In this paper we discuss the categorization of the environments from the metaphor of worlds behind screens, and show how three different types each fit different types of learning context and learning goals.

The task analysis methods discussed in this presentation stem from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Ethnography (as applied for the design of Computer Supported Cooperative Work CSCW), different disciplines that often are considered conflicting approaches when applied to the same design problems. Both approaches have their strength and weakness, and an integration of them does add value to the early stages of design of cooperation technology. In order to develop an integrated method for groupware task analysis (GTA) a conceptual framework is presented that allows a systematic perspective on complex work phenomena. The framework features a triple focus, considering (a) people, (b) work, and (c) the situation. Integrating various task-modeling approaches requires vehicles for making design information explicit, for which an object oriented formalism will be suggested. GTA consists of a method and framework that have been developed during practical design exercises. Examples from some of these cases will illustrate our approach.

The main objective of the study is to get insight in the knowledge representations of complex financial products in novices and experts and in the effectiveness of the reasoning and decision making strategies that are used to solve problems in the finance domain.It is not known how and why consumers make decisions on finance. How is knowledge about money, debt and personal finance represented in novices and experts; and if and how do ideas about debt and money influence decisions on household finance? The study aims to obtain insight in these questions by investigating novices and experts on 4 cognitive aspects: representations, decisions making, knowledge and communication on finance.Research approach -- A number of studies and experiments will be carried out in for this doctoral thesis. The first study is planned for August 2012. Two groups of subjects, consumers of financial products (novices) and financial professionals (experts) will participate in a study using the Teach back method. This is a qualitative method to research mental representations of complex systems. Using the Teach back method, it will be analyzed if there is consistency in representations within both groups and differences between both groups will be investigated. The results of the study will be used for creating two or more personas. Personas are models of people. Using personas several experiments will be designed. These experiments will involve methods to create a common ground for finance concepts for novices and experts. One experiment will be the design of a workshop where groups of participants share knowledge on money and finance. A second experiment will be an online platform that supports knowledge sharing between novices and experts.

As the world comes together, culture becomes an issueWe have been designing for each other for many centuries. Originally, we knew our clients of design, who were members of our tribe, or living in the same village. At different locations on the globe, people designed for the same functionality, sometimes in parallel without being aware. In communities far remote from each other different (often unique) ways of written communication were designed and different countries claim the invention of a variation of the printing press or gunpowder. If we look at the design of clothing, we easily discover cultural differences related to taste as well as to context of use.The globe is rapidly shrinking. Most new designs will be quickly discovered by strangers that live in far away locations. In fact, recent design efforts often aim at world wide adoption. But reaching new potential users does not mean it fits them all, like it did fit those that lived in the designers own village.

Motivation -- The purpose of this paper is to analyse how students experience different modalities in online ICT learning. The general aim is to develop a system that maps learning activities within their own context to different modalities.Research approach -- A first study was conducted in which about 30 students were asked to view three online presentations on three different topics and presented in three different modalities. After each presentation they were asked to evaluate the experience in a questionnaire..Findings/Design -- Despite the fact that no significant differences were found on how students experience different modalities, there are indications that the results would be different with a larger control groupResearch limitations/Implications -- Only Italian university students whose native language is not English participates in the study. This might influence the results. We intend to repeat this study with other student populations and for other learning domains.Originality/Value -- E-learning today comes in different modalities. The choice for a certain modality nowadays is often technology or teacher driven. In this research we want to investigate e-learning from a user-centred perspective to discover in what situations what modalities enhance the learning experience of students most.

This chapter addresses awareness support to enhance teamwork in co-located collaborative environments. In particular, the authors focus on the concept of situational awareness which is essential for successful team collaboration. Mutual situational awareness leads to informal social interactions, development of shared working cultures which are essential aspects of maintaining working relationships. First, an overview of the studies on team coordination and situational awareness support is presented. Second, a collaborative working environment is described for scientific teams in a molecular biology omics experimentation domain. Then, the results of practical case studies are discussed, as well as situational awareness support for scientific teams in collaborative environments. Finally, the authors discuss practical challenges in design and evaluation of group support systems for collaborative working environments and our multi-level analysis approach. The chapter gives new insights into how shared displays support group awareness, and how to design and evaluate interactive systems and visualisations that afford awareness in order to stimulate existing and new forms of collaboration in advanced working environments.

User interfaces in modern bioinformatics tools are designed for experts. They are too complicated for novice users such as bench biologists. This report presents the full results of a formative user study as part of a domain and requirements analysis to enhance user interfaces and collaborative environments for multidisciplinary teamwork. Contextual field observations, questionnaires and interviews with bioinformatics researchers of different levels of expertise and various backgrounds were performed in order to gain insight into their needs and working practices. The analysed results are presented as a user profile description and user requirements for designing user interfaces that support the collaboration of multidisciplinary research teams in scientific collaborative environments. Although the number of participants limits the generalisability of the findings, the combination of recurrent observations with other user analysis techniques in real-life settings makes the contribution of this user study novel.

Until recently it was difficult to incorporate team projects in distance education. Nowadays, however, new technology is available which allows for distance teamwork. In this paper we will describe a project-oriented course on human-computer interaction. The course is meant for computer science students in distance education. A serious restriction is caused by the fact that the students study at home, where they usually only have a slow connection to Internet at their disposal. We will focus on the way we structured the course to make distance teamwork possible. Furthermore the tools we offered the students will be discussed. Finally, in the paper we will present the first experiences gained in a pilot project with 12 computer science students.

Ten poems on process control in human-machine systems were garnished with three pieces of music composed around the theme EACE. They were performed during the social program of the 9th CSAPC conference 2003, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Twenty-five peer referees seated in the audience decided that regarding the relevance of their themes, poems and music should become an integral part of the conference proceedings. port, the legitimacy of HCI in science and industry, and the feasibility of collaboration with SIGCHI. This effort continued in Vancouver the day before the CHI conference, when most of the same people met and discussed how to develop a platform for contact, support, and the preparation of stronger structures. The group also discussed how SIGCHI could enable these types of meetings and subsequent organizational development. The CHI conference has been moving around and will continue to do so. In fact, what some people once perceived as a mainly U.S.-based meeting will be in that country only occasionally: 2011 was in Canada, 2012 will be in the U.S., 2013 in France, 2014 in Canada again, and 2015 is intended to be in Southeast Asia. We really are a traveling circus now, and our tent is a town hall. This year we actually held a town hall meeting, with lots of sensible contributions from members: free and open discussions, well-received suggestions, and comments that made us reconsider the way we operate (as well as a much-appreciated boxed lunch). An approach to user interface design is described in which the prime focus is to stimulate consistency between the mental models developed and the conceptual model of the system. The examination of mental models users formed of relatively simple information retrieval systems, provided the basis for the design of the conceptual model for the information retrieval process. The problems encountered, however, once the semantic level of interface had been specified, are of interest. Which levels of feedback can be distinguished? Which types of feedback should be included at which levels? A framework for the design of the user interface will be proposed and a description of its use in developing an information retrieval system. Four categories of decisions have been identified: decisions concerning (1) interface language, (2) instrumental aspects of interaction, (3) domain-specific strategical aspects of interaction and (4) monitoring facilities (didactic rules, history, user-model). This framework together with the conceptual model, still leaves the designer with a great number of questions and variables. To what extent does the interaction paradigm interfere with or enhance the process of information retrieval? To what extent do the different forms of feedback suffice? The process of design and development will be described, including the pilot study undertaken during this process to test the success of the decisions. Evaluation of the design decisions will include the examination of indications of the quality of users' mental models.

Abstract. The development of a representational framework, based on Moran's Command Language Grammar, for constructing adaptive computer systems is the main topic of this paper. A model of the user interface is developed of which two aspects are discussed: the mental model in the mind of the user and the perceptual model on the side of the machine. Cognitive style and personality factors are considered in their relation to the development of the mental model. The concept of metacommunication is analysed and discussed on all levels of Moran's CLG.
