The development of the world of technology has provided many changes in the pattern of human life, including influencing environmental phenomena that have an impact on the way of life of citizens. To prevent environmental destruction. So ecological education is one of the efforts to continue the effort to create citizens who care about the environment with their environmental characteristics. This study aims to examine the ecological competence of elementary school students through civic education in building awareness of the environment. The approach used in this research is qualitative with the literature study method. The results of the analysis and study in this study indicate: 1) the competence of knowledge and ecological strategies of elementary school students is formed through civic education, 2) elementary school students can act on environmental issues, 3) elementary school students have the quality to address environmental issues through civic education. So that the conclusion in this study is that the ecological competence of elementary school students can be formed through civic education, the output of which is that these students have environmental skills and character in utilizing their environment.

Through citizenship education subjects’ students can grow and develop digital media literacy. This digital media literacy includes improving knowledge and skills, and awareness will be the use of digital media and the Internet. The method used in this research is a case study with a qualitative approach, which will be applied in schools. The results of this study show: how the implementation and success of character education based on digital media literacy based on the spread of hoax news to students in citizenship education learning. After conducting research, the program of strengthening character education through digital literacy-based citizenship education subjects is successful in counteracting the spread of hoax news, and can foster student awareness in the use of digital media and the internet.

The increment of elderly population in the world has impacted on some aspects of human life, namely culture, politic and economy. This article discusses the phenomenon of ageism in society as a stereotype against elderly. The emergence of this view triggers the appearance of age discrimination, where the generations are socially divided, that leads to social disharmony. This phenomenon is studied from the perspective of Civic Education by using phenomenology study approach. The data were collected by interviewing 32 informants, observing some nursing homes and public places, doing library research, and surveying 466 respondents. This study was conducted in three provinces in Indonesia, namely DKI Jakarta, West Java and Yogyakarta. This study reveals that Global citizenship has not yet reached population ageing issue; and there is a gap of communication between young people and elderly that impacts on their mindset, communication pattern, and even triggers labeling given by young people to elderly, and vice versa. Thus, this study concludes that as the elderly population increases, ageism becomes a cultural challenge that should be faced and solved to maintain a harmonious relation among generations. Anti-ageism is recommended to be one of crucial issues that should be incorporated, discussed and developed in Civic Education and it is also suggested to be inclusive education program plan.

This paper aims to find out the involvement of Beneran Indonesia volunteers in the civic education program. For strengthening social cohesion, participants who are from various religions, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds have brought together and collaborated with volunteers through this program. Qualitative research with a case study method carried out by collecting data from 14 respondents. The result of the study shows that volunteering activities create solidarity, tolerance, communication, interaction, and good connections between volunteers. This research can be used as material for further research on volunteers and students (participants) in outdoor activities to create harmonious social cohesion.

Illiteracy eradication manifests as an important and a common aspect in many countries' development agendas as well as in the United Nation's development initiatives. Indonesia is one of such countries. Based on the data of 2004, Indonesia has at least 28 regencies that still have high illiteracy rates. This condition hinders national growth and development of a country. With a Functional Literacy (FL) program designed and implemented to alleviate illiteracy in the country, this study investigates the effectiveness of a self-concept based participative learning model in improving literacy. The investigation is carried out in Cirebon Regency, on 40 Sub-districts and 125 Community Learning Centers (CLCs). Based on cluster sampling technique, two sub-districts are chosen as the sample for the study. A participative learning model is implemented in this study and an investigation is performed using a quantitative approach, complemented with a qualitative approach. The data is analyzed using three techniques: Descriptive statistical analysis, descriptive qualitative analysis and comparison analysis. Data validity, reliability and objectivity are tested to ensure that the research instruments used are appropriate. From the data analysis, it is concluded that the implemented model is effective in improving learners' literacy skills and it is proven by the difference in literacy skills of the experimental group and the control group. The improvement is also found to be statistically significant, as evidenced by a tcalc value higher than the ttable.

Festival is the gathering of society from many places and different backgrounds as the form of citizen’s commitment. The festival provides a place for people, stakeholders, industry, artist, volunteer, and participants to interact in a space which is dynamic and give beneficial. The successfulness of festival can create a harmonious togetherness for the visitor and community and establish the personal satisfaction to be a good citizen. The purpose of this research is to find out the citizens’ active participation, cooperation between government and stakeholder, and connectivity between individuals in creating successful festival and able to create a social cohesion. This qualitative research with ethnography method was done during the implementation of Krakatau Festival XXVII. Result of the research showed that festival gave a space for citizen’s participation, increase the knowledge, getting social experience and increase personal skills to the environment as a shape of citizenship’s civilization and strengthen social cohesion. Based on the experience of developed countries, festival activities can be used as a vehicle to cultivate the volunteerism of young citizens to work in the midst of society. Helping and lighten the agenda of activities within the community should be built from the connectivity between individuals. This study aims to find the form of active citizen participation, increase knowledge, increase social experience, and personal skills to public issues as a form of civilization citizenship in the event of Krakatau festival in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. Qualitative research with this ethnographic method found that volunteers are very helpful in organizing the festival as a sense of caring and personal satisfaction. The results show that self-care in the work, mobilizing fellow volunteers should be prioritized and learned to foster commitments that promote honesty, fairness, and responsibility. But the true influence of individualist life is a challenge of changing attitudes of individual behavior. Therefore, the extent of volunteer activities can be implemented maximally in building self and society. Keywords: Festival, Civic Virtue, Volunteerism, Citizens.

Parenting is a model of interaction between parents and children, which aims to foster the child's character. In general, parenting is done by both parents, especially mothers. However, in families where the mother latches become foreign workers abroad, the responsibility and the implementation of the childcare switch entirely to the father. Typology of a father's parenting is different, thought to be an effect also on differences in the character of their children. This study aimed to get an overview of the typology of father parenting in the family Labor Women, and its influence on the character of their children. Because intends to reveal in depth the social situation, then selected a qualitative approach, in order to describe the reality of the situation at the site of the study. Participants of this study are the father, whose wife was into women workers in Saudi Arabia, along with their children. Data collection techniques, is through observation; deep interview; and literature studies. Data analysis techniques, beginning with data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing / verification. Along with the data collection, performed triangulation of data sources, which is one component of credibility test data in qualitative research. According to the research there appears to be three types of parenting that is owned by the father in the family environment of the female labor force, i.e. Authoritarian parenting; Permissive; and Authoritative. Based on the results of the research can be stated, that the type of parenting a different father would produce children's character is different. It should be used as a reference by the parents in the choice of the typology of parenting that will be applied to children.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether school culture develops character education in elementary school. This is a quantitative investigation and the instrument named “School Culture” was used for this study. The variables of the school culture are school’s vision and mission, school’s tradition, principal's role, professional collaboration, relation in school, collegiality, students' involvement, and parents' and society's cooperation. The inventories were applied to 22 elementary schools of Yayasan Salib Suci in West Java, Indonesia. The statistical findings indicated that school culture has influence to develop the character education. The most significant influence is the relation among the members of the school community. The key to the success of the improvement of the quality of the school is how each member of the school interacts with each other. A positive pattern of relationship and communication will have a significant role in developing the school, students' character education, and increasing students' achievement.

This paper discusses the extent to which the fundamental sociological phenomenon is the emergence of power centered on an elite group (oligarchy) and the appearance of veiled hatred that became the source of the turmoil of post-reform Indonesian society. The paper argues that the problem lies in the lack of an agreement to develop naturally, and participatory values (normative integration) and rely more on power approach (integration coercive). Indonesia needs to create a civic culture as a cultural agreement to establish harmony among groups in society and one of them through the learning of Sociology. On the other hand, in the era of 'democratic transition' Indonesian people are confronted with the various phenomena that really concern people's lives. In the society bad characters emerge as typified by the drastic and fantastic change in social and cultural life. The people who were formerly known as patient, friendly, courteous and good at small talks are now becoming grumpy, abusive, and vindictive. They mistreat fellow human beings in the hustle of the city. People of different villages/tribes savagely fight with each other. Even more tragic, our students are hurting each other in the streets. Level of discipline in our society in various fields of life also does not seem encouraging, even obeying a simple rule such as riding/driving on a street is still very poor (2). On the basis of this reality it is imperative that we investigate seriously what exactly the source of the aforementioned phenomena is.

This article is about the thoughts and ideologies of Nurcholish Madjid (Cak Nur), as one of modern thinkers on Islam, democracy and nationalism in Indonesia. The paper analyzes Cak Nur’s views on how to integrate the three in building a modern Indonesia which is peaceful and conducive for all religions and races. The author chose to study Nurcholish Madjid because he is considered to be one of the contemprary Islamic scholars on the Archipelago who has showed love for his religion, democracy and of course for his nation.

The conduct of civic teaching up to now still faces some barriers and limitations so its mission to make good citizen is not yet being realized in value-based education corridor. Based this reality, it is imperative to conduct a comprehension study on basic problems so the civic education can be empowered as a poweifu1 learning area characterized by contextual learning experience such as meaningful, integrated, value-based, challenging, and activating. Through these kinds of learning experiences, student be facilitated in constructing democratic civic knowledge, attitude, and skills in constructive psycho-pedagogic corridor.
