This paper examines the act of complimenting and responding to compliments among Singapore Chinese. To this end, I explored naturally occurring compliment exchanges during the Chinese New Year (CNY) period. These exchanges are not only gender-sensitive, but age- and generation-sensitive as well. The CNY celebrations are governed by certain conventions, exchanging compliments being one of them. The conventional setting helps us understand the functions of compliments and the nature of their responses better, thus avoiding overgeneralizations. Compliments and their responses in the CNY context appear to play an important mainly phatic role. This study suggests that (a) married females pay and receive most compliments and (b) the most common compliment topic centers on their children’s academic achievement and potential career success rather than appearance (Holmes 1988) or possessions (Herbert 1991). In addition, most responses are of the non-acceptance type with downgrading, which is in line with findings from other researchers (see, e.g., Gu 1990; Chen 1993). A survey carried out on these non-acceptance responses shows that informants understand them as being largely conventional and formalistic rather than literal in nature, probably due to the conventional setting. This speech event of compliments and their responses is a mirror of cultural values (Manes 1983), revealing that the Chinese-speaking community of Singapore places high importance on children’s socio-economic success and practices conventional humility.

While there is support for regulatory fit theory in predicting the communication effectiveness of promotion-framed and prevention-framed messages in advertisements, it is not certain if the theory can be extended to predict the effectiveness of promotion-oriented and prevention-oriented advertising appeals. This study examines the interplay of regulatory focus as well as the endorsement of collectivism and individualism among adolescents in predicting the perceived effectiveness of promotion-oriented and prevention-oriented public service advertising appeals. Data was collected from a convenience sample of 407 Chinese secondary school students aged 12 to 19 in Hong Kong. Results support the regulatory fit theory. Among the respondents, vertical collectivism was not a significant predictor for the perceived effectiveness of either promotion- or prevention-oriented appeals. Horizontal individualism was a significant predictor for the perceived effectiveness of the loss avoidance PSA appeal. Respondents’ horizontal collectivism scores were positive predictors for the perceived effectiveness of both promotion and prevention-oriented appeals.

Gender role ideologies are embedded in cultural values and assumptions about life. Women’s greater endorsement of egalitarian beliefs may stem from gender differences in world views as indexed by social axioms. The purpose of this study was to examine potential mediators of gender differences in gender ideologies among university students in Guatemala, a country where traditional views are prevalent. Participants, 2,134 university students from nine campuses in different regions of Guatemala (43% male, 85% emerging adults), completed a Social Axioms Scale, along with three culturally relevant measures of gender ideology: the Historic-Sociocultural Premises Scale (HSCP) and the Machismo Measure that taps both traditional machismo and caballerismo (gentlemanliness). Consistent with previous research in other countries, men held more traditional attitudes about gender and the family than did women on all measures. Gender differences on all scales were mediated by cynicism and religiosity. Fate control mediated the gender differences in traditional machismo and the HSCP. These findings suggest that Guatemalan women and men through socialization, cultural demands, and life experiences develop gender-specific ways of viewing the world, and their attitudes about gender roles are shaped by those worldviews. The achievement of gender equality, a U.N. sustainable development goal, may require attention to the underlying world views of women and men.

This study aims to describe the orientation of Nias cultural values ​​in the lyrics of the maena at the falöwa traditional ceremony in Gunungsitoli. The research was conducted using a qualitative method with an anthropolinguistic approach. The data in this study is a snippet of the lyrics of the maena at the traditional falöwa (wedding) ceremony, either spoken orally or a collection of written lyrics. Primary data sources are the results of interviews with informants and recordings of playing. The secondary data source is the maena lyric text in the book "Maena Nias – Means of Delivering Messages and Life Stories of the Nias Society," published by the Nias Heritage Museum, 2018. Data were collected using observation and interview methods. The observation method is carried out using the tapping and nonparticipation and the recording techniques as further techniques. The interview method uses direct interview techniques. Then, the data were analyzed in stages: (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, and (3) making conclusions/verification. In the analysis process, the researcher also validated the data by applying data triangulation. The triangulation used in this study is source triangulation. The study results concluded that, first, the society of Nias interprets the nature of life as something that needs to be fought for. Second, the society of Nias views that the nature of the work can increase the position and honor of humans in their environment. Third, Nias society view that humans are influenced by space and time. Fourth, Nias society views the importance of harmonious relations between humans and their natural surroundings. Fifth, Nias society upholds human relations with each other.

Although social media plays an increasingly important role in communication around the world, social media research has primarily focused on Western users. Thus, little is known about how cultural values shape social media behavior. To examine how cultural affective values might influence social media use, we developed a new sentiment analysis tool that allowed us to compare the affective content of Twitter posts in the United States (55,867 tweets, 1,888 users) and Japan (63,863 tweets, 1,825 users). Consistent with their respective cultural affective values, U.S. users primarily produced positive (vs. negative) posts, whereas Japanese users primarily produced low (vs. high) arousal posts. Contrary to cultural affective values, however, U.S. users were more influenced by changes in others' high arousal negative (e.g., angry) posts, whereas Japanese were more influenced by changes in others' high arousal positive (e.g., excited) posts. These patterns held after controlling for differences in baseline exposure to affective content, and across different topics. Together, these results suggest that across cultures, while social media users primarily produce content that supports their affective values, they are more influenced by content that violates those values. These findings have implications for theories about which affective content spreads on social media, and for applications related to the optimal design and use of social media platforms around the world. Contributing to the literature on online review variance, we investigate consumer adoption intentions in three studies looking at various perspectives regarding new products. Study 1 demonstrates that really new products (RNPs) with low review variance lead to higher adoption intentions, while incrementally new products (INPs) with high review variance lead to higher adoption intentions. Study 2 shows that risk perceptions and uniqueness perceptions are the mechanisms underlying the interaction effect between product newness and online review variance. Study 3 considers cultural values to explore the premise’s boundary, finding that indulgent consumers tend to prefer INPs with high variance reviews while restrained consumers are more likely to adopt RNPs with low variance. These findings offer theoretical and managerial implications for managing the online review variance of new products.

The current study reports on a variational pragmatic comparison of compliments and compliment responses between Egyptian and Saudi Arabic. Data were collected by using Discourse Completion Tasks from 443 Egyptian and 428 Saudi undergraduates, and were analyzed using adaptations of Yuan’s (2002) and Herbert’s (1986) models. The results reveal significant differences in politeness management between Egyptian and Saudi youth, particularly with Egyptians producing more explicit compliment strategies and Saudis showing stronger preference for implicit compliment strategies and combination patterns. Less difference is noted in compliment responses with only Egyptians exhibiting higher use of additional strategies. The findings are interpreted in light of politeness theory and the interplay between cultural values and linguistic behavior.

Purpose This study aims to examine whether accountability and culture have an impact on auditors’ professional scepticism. It also examines whether culture moderates the effect of accountability on auditors’ professional scepticism. Design/methodology/approach Three of the Big 4 firms in Australia and Egypt participated in an audit judgement experiment, which required them to indicate their beliefs about the risk of fraud and error at the planning stage of a hypothetical audit and evaluate the truthfulness of explanations provided by the client management. The authors examined whether their professional scepticism was influenced by accountability. Findings The results indicate professional scepticism differs significantly between cultures in some situations. The fact that culture influences scepticism suggests that even when auditors use the same standards (such as ISA 240 and ISA 600), they are likely to be applied inconsistently, even within the same firm. The authors, therefore, recommend that international bodies issue additional guidance on cultural values and consider these cultural differences when designing or adopting auditing standards. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that examines whether culture moderates the impact of accountability on auditors’ professional scepticism using Egyptian and Australian (Middle Eastern and Western) auditors. Prior literature suggests that individuals subject to accountability pressure increase their cognitive effort and vigilance to detect fraud and error. As the authors find evidence that culture moderates accountability pressure and as accountability affects scepticism, they add to the literature suggesting that culture can influence professional scepticism.

This research uses descriptive method by collecting various qualitative and quantitative data relating to the form and symbolic meaning of the Bantayo Po' Boide Traditional House of Gorontalo Regency, while the data collection uses the method of Observation, Documentation, Interview and Literature Study. The results of this study, the writer found a variety of decorative meanings in the Bantayo Po' Boide traditional house. 1) The front of the house there is a stylized ornament of lotus and breadfruit plants and grouse. 2) Ornaments on the edge of the banyan and triangular tree ceiling. 3) Ornaments in the ventilation of doors and windows are stylized in the form of spears and shields. 4) The living room ceiling ornament is a combination of lotus flowers and chains. 5) Ornaments on lyst plank are stylized from jasmine plants.

China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) centres on building a harmonious world, by reorienting the already tumultuous international community, towards the path of sustainable, peaceful and harmonious coexistence. From a cultural perspective, the OBOR is a heritage, an embodiment of brilliant civilization, glorious historic past and extraordinary creativity of mankind. It harbours both tangible and intangible representations of the values, beliefs, traditions and lifestyles of prior generations that are valuable to the present generations. Evidence of historical socioeconomic development and intricacies thrived on the exchange of cultural values shared by all mankind. By drawing from diverse conceptual frameworks embedded in traditional Chinese cultural values, the study offers an insightful illustration of cultural practices in contemporary China’s socioeconomic development through the OBOR. Capturing how cultural values underpins the socioeconomic development pattern in OBOR, geopolitical decisions and actions aimed at managing conflicts and the inclusive nature of OBOR.

In the context of globalization and nation processes, the problem of preserving national culture, their traditions and customs as the titular nation is especially acute. Therefore, today one of the main tasks is the formation of national identity, including by means of folk dance. The main tasks and priority areas for the formation of national identity are determined by the State National Program "Education" (in the XXI century), which notes that national education is one of the main priorities, an organic component of education. National education is aimed at attracting citizens to the deep layers of national culture and spirituality, the formation of national worldview positions, ideas, views and beliefs in children and young people based on the values of national and world culture.

Abstract. Drawing on the person–organization fit theory, we investigate how the value congruence between employees’ collectivist values and their perception of organizational collectivism influences organizational embeddedness. Based on a survey of 515 working adults, the polynomial regression and response surface analysis results support that embeddedness is highest in the presence of both high individual and organizational collectivism. Additionally, the smaller the discrepancy between the two perceptions, the more embedded the employees. Our study contributes to the cultural perspectives in the organizational embeddedness research by theorizing and measuring the impact of collectivism at the individual level. The findings also contribute to the person–organization fit theory by identifying a value congruence approach to organizational embeddedness.

Linguists consider insults/swear words as interjections carrying an expressive, cathartic, function, through which the enunciator manifests emotions. We provide a contrastive study of insults/swear words, investigating whether there are specific morphological/syntactic structures pertaining to insults/swear words and discuss the cross-cultural similarities/differences in the pragmatic use of this kind of language, focusing on the perspective of politeness. To do so, we analyse examples drawn from Hergé’s TinTin and their translation into Greek and English, this comic being rich in insults /swear words due to the particularities of the genre of discourse and Captain Haddock’s expressive character. The question is whether the implicit pragmatic/cultural values are the same in all the texts or there are important differences, which can be traced, deriving from the particularities of each of the languages of study. It emerged that the Greek chosen utterances reflect all the parameters influencing the original: phonological, semantic, pragmatic, stylistic. The English version seems to be more distant on all levels of analysis. The (non)preservation of the parameters depends on the peculiarities of the Greek, French and English languages and on the collective images of the recipients. Our conclusions match previous researches, proving Greek as positive politeness oriented, opposed to English (see also Romero 2000; Sifianou 2001).

Learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) in contexts with limited multinational and transcultural backgrounds, such as Saudi Arabia, should be able to communicate with people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Students’ awareness should be enriched with an understanding of the diversity among people around the world. EFL textbooks are one of the platforms for raising students’ awareness of cultural and linguistic differences. This study aimed to explore the cultural content of an EFL textbook taught at an international primary school in Saudi Arabia via the adoption of critical discourse analysis as a methodological approach. It focused on the multicultural values represented in the EFL textbook geared toward teaching senior primary school students. The study identified a number of values, including fostering positive perspectives concerning old tribes and people, appreciating the lives of other people, respecting the hard efforts made by some nations and understanding different cultural values in different parts of the world. There is found a lack of consideration of the cultural values of some countries in Africa, the Middle East and the Far East. Therefore, this study implicates stakeholders in Saudi Arabia to demand their cultural values be depicted in teaching and educational material.

This theme was inspired by the RRI Kendari program at the event of networking culture organized by the Regional Office of Sulawesi on May 15, 2017. La Ode and Wa Ode were noble titles or at least considered the prayers from parents to their children so that their children would become leaders or nobles in the future. In addition, La Ode and Wa Ode were the acronyms of the two statements of the Islamic creed. The word "La" stands for La Ilaha Ilallah while the word "Wa" stems from Wa Asyahadu Anna Muhammad Darasulullah. This paper aims to explore cultural values in the naming of La Ode and Wa Ode in the communities of Muna and Buton. The method used was descriptive analytics through observation and interviews. This study found that La Ode and Wa Ode's naming has changed, although, at the same time, it has become a cultural heritage of the Indonesian archipelago. Furthermore, along with the development of globalization, La Ode and Wa Ode have experienced cultural degradation to some extent. Thus, the addition of La Ode and Wa Ode is not always attached to the title of nobility.

The study examines how strategic interventions mediate in the relationship between strategic leadership behaviors and firm performance of SMEs in Nigeria. A survey of 834 registered operators of SMEs through structured questionnaire was used and data were analysed using mediation analysis through structural equation modeling. The results showed that strategic leadership influence performance through strategic interventions decomposed into organisational learning and cultural values. It showed that the mediator exerts stronger effect on performance than the independent variable. It revealed further that strategic interventions are significant in its causal effect on performance of SMEs than strategic leadership. The implication is that the operators should not only encourage employee to be optimistic in future accomplishment and stimulate a sense of logic to create the notion of problem solving, but also must inculcate the culture of paying attention to employee talents and needs for performance improvement.

Purpose This paper aims to test the relationship between millennials’ status motivation and their ecologically conscious consumer behavior (ECCB) and the mediating role of culture influencing this effect. Design/methodology/approach A panel of millennials was surveyed using established scales to measure their status motivation, cultural values and ECCB. Findings The findings demonstrate status motivation has a positive effect on millennials’ ECCB. The findings indicate that the cultural values of collectivism, power distance and masculinity mediate the relationship between status motivation and ECCB. Research limitations/implications This study looked at responses from one generation, millennials, in one country, the USA. Practical implications Status motivation can impact ECCB and cultural values mediate this relationship. Status motivation can directly impact ECCB, as well as work positively through the cultural values of collectivism and power distance and negatively through masculinity. Social implications The results suggest ECCB for status-motivated millennials is driven by both status motivation and their collectivism, power distance and masculinity. To encourage millennials’ ECCB, public policymakers and marketers should emphasize the social influences of sustainable behaviors and how these behaviors make them stand out from others who are not sustainable and target those who view women as equal to men. Originality/value This research examines how millennials’ status motivations impact their ecologically conscious behaviors both directly and through the mediating role of cultural values. This research contributes by answering the call for looking at the influence of cultural values on environmental behaviors. It offers a possible reason for the mixed findings previously in the literature regarding status and sustainability by illustrating status motivations may work both directly and through cultural values in influencing ECCB. Thus, it is one of the first studies to demonstrate culture’s mediating effect in the area of sustainability.

Historical collective shelters, yahuthanes or cortejos, are an alternative form of housing that were developed to provide secure sheltering of the groups who were disadvantaged in terms of economic, social, and cultural aspects in the Ottoman city. They have played a significant role in history as a building type that made possible cohabitation of groups, with moral and material problems, and struggling to maintain their integrity despite hardship. This study deals with a group of historical collective shelters in the traditional commercial center of Izmir dating mainly to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The objective is to understand the historic evolution of collective shelters (yahuthane, cortejo) in Hursidiye, Kurtulus and Sakarya neighborhoods of Konak district in Izmir, to define their cultural values, to analyze their social and spatial development, to present their physical characteristics and evaluate their preservation problems. Eleven collective shelters were documented in the studied site, which is a portion of the traditional commercial center of Izmir (Kemeralti). The site comprehends the ruins of the Roman Agora and the remains of the public buildings dating to the pre-modernization period of the Ottoman Empire as well as the late Ottoman urban layout. As a method, the preliminary studies were reviewed, the land registers were surveyed, the present base map together with the historical maps were overlapped and the case studies were conducted using conventional techniques of architectural and urban conservation. The study has documented the interaction of Muslim and Jewish communities and how the collective living habits of these ethnic groups living in collective shelters differed from standard residential life at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries in the traditional commercial center of Izmir. Though collective shelters in the historic center of Izmir have been studied in the literature, their specific location on the map was not available. This study has provided locations of the shelters and evaluated the architectural characteristics of their remains. The traces and remains of the historic collective shelters should be preserved as elements contributing to the integrity of the multi layered city.

PurposeBuilding on the “Great Divide” thesis (Goody, 1977; Ong, 1982), this study analyzes the conceptual relationships between the two main communication modes (orality/literacy) and cultural values.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopts a purely conceptual approach to connect orality and literacy with nine cultural dimensions adopted from Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck’s (1961), Hall’s (1976) and Inglehart’s (1997) frameworks.FindingsThe analyses suggest that orality is associated with values such as high-context communication, poly-chronic time, public space proxemics, collectivism, hierarchical social structure, subjugation, past orientation, religiousness/traditionalism and survival cultural dimensions. Literacy is associated with opposing values, including low-context communication, mono-chronic time, private space proxemics, individualism, egalitarian social structure, dominance, future orientation, secularity/rationality, and self-expression cultural dimensions. The paper relies on modernization theory to explain the socio-economic implications and organizes the nine pairs of cultural dimensions according to the great divide between orality and literacy.Originality/valueTheoretically, this study conceptualizes orality and literacy, analyzes their salient differences and examines their relationships with cultural values. While many studies have tried to explain the differences in cultural values from an economic perspective, this study offers an alternative view of cultural values’ variations across the world.

This article addresses Climate Change Education (CCE) and its interface with Indigenous knowledge. Specifically, I explore the potential for transformation towards more holistic climate change education that balances science and Indigenous knowledge. However, the study details the persistent focus of contemporary education on climate science without interfacing with Indigenous knowledge, cultural values, and associated practices that contribute to climate change resilience. This article tackles this gap and the requisite transformation in climate change education through narrative inquiry.

The article is devoted to the topical problems of theory and practice of appraisal of documentary heritage objects value in scientific libraries, archives, museums taking into consideration functional and stock specifics of these institutions. Its goals and tasks, principles and axiological criteria are described. It is shown that the main goal of such appraisal is determining the place of documentary heritage objects as the objects of the appraisal in the system of cultural values of modern society, establishing the belonging of these objects to cultural heritage objects of world, national, regional, local significance. Appraisal of documentary heritage objects is analyzed as one of important areas of scientific and administrative activities which to a large extent ensures the functioning, improvement of information potential and accordingly the image of the library, archives, museum. The Ukrainian experience of the recent decades is highlighted in many aspects, namely: regulation, organization and appraising documentary heritage objects at the state, interdepartmental and departmental levels, at the level of the profile institution fund-holder. The features of the appraisal, the objects of which are archival heritage objects and book heritage objects, are revealed. It is emphasized that the appraisal of value of the existing funds and collections of documentary heritage objects is the basis for the development and implementation of modern individual concepts and integrative projects for libraries, archives and museums, which provides for the coexistence and interrelation of material expositions and various forms of virtual information.

It is widely believed that a virtuous state always commits to uphold and consistently implement ethical values. If ethics cannot be maintained in the public sector, it would drive unethical behaviors of public officials that ultimately damage the public reputation and cause nepotism, irregularities, waste of public resources, loss of lives and properties, etc. Meanwhile, implementing ethical values into practice for public sector management requires a systematical approach and policies. Since the culture of a nation also influences people's behaviors, thus the role of cultural values should be considered in the management of ethical values in the public sector. This study examines the masterpiece work of Mawlana Jalal al-Din Rumi, The Mathnawi, as an example of a cultural resource. This study has two main purposes: Firstly, it aims to raise awareness about the advice of Mawlana Jalaleddin Rumi regarding the essentials of ethical management in the public sector through Mathnawi. The second aim is to encourage readers to analyze and evaluate their own cultural resources to understand and implement the ethical management philosophies they envisage through a systematic perspective. This study argues that the core elements of Mathnawi with supporting local cultural values can play a crucial role in strengthening the practice of ethical management in public sector organizations. Therefore, it can be said that Mathnawi includes advice regarding the key essentials of ethics management.

Evidence-based parenting programs have shown efficacy across a range of contexts, however, the cultural fit of a program can affect program engagement and participation. Ensuring the acceptability of programs and strategies is essential prior to wider dissemination. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to assess the acceptability of Group Triple P with Brazilian parents. A cross-sectional design was used with a sample of convenience (n = 38 Brazilian parents) who had completed Triple P as a part of another study. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from these parents in order to explore their perceptions of the program and its strategies. The quantitative outcomes revealed the participants found the strategies highly acceptable and highly useful and were moderately satisfied with the program. The most common barriers identified by parents to accessing the program were logistical (e.g., access to childcare, and competing work commitments) and emotional (e.g., shame for parents) rather than cultural barriers. A thematic analysis of qualitative responses revealed four major themes: recommendations for program implementation, cultural appropriateness, barriers to implementing Triple P and changes in parenting. Overall, the participants were very positive about Triple P and perceived the program to be consistent with the cultural values of Brazilian parents, however, some recommendations to improve cultural fit were noted.

Based on the perspective of social information processing theory and cultural dimension theory, this paper takes the innovative teams of several universities represented by Harbin Institute of Technology as the research objects, and uses a multilevel linear model to study the effect of knowledge hiding on knowledge innovative behavior (KIB) of innovative team members and the dual moderating role of team innovative climate and individual cultural values. The empirical results show that knowledge hiding has a significant negative impact on KIB, and the positive team innovative climate can significantly reduce this negative impact. However, the promotion effect of team innovative climate on team members’ KIB is heterogeneous under the different cultural values of members. Specifically, for members with high level of uncertainty avoidance or masculinity, even in the positive team innovative climate, they cannot significantly reduce this negative impact of knowledge hiding on their KIB.

The research attempted to discover the impact of displacement phenomena on the identity of landscape, by using Janet Stephenson’s Cultural Values Model to study and analyze cultural landscapes. The model was chosen due to its universality, simplicity and embodiment of the relational concept of landscape perception and evaluation. The result of landscape evaluation depends on the characteristics of both landscape and observer, as well as on the relation of the object and subject. In order to understand the complexity and diversity of landscape and its identity, these were analyzed through a ternary system, consisting of forms, practices, and relationships, i.e. what is seen, what is happening and what it means to those who see and use it. The research represents a feasible and pragmatic approach to understand the complexity of landscape and its identity, by tracing back their retrospective changes due to the impact of displacement phenomena – a shift of objects, behaviours or relationships. Through this theoretical and methodological model, multiple universal correlational patterns were developing, in which the three components encountering the displacement behave and interact with each other, leading to an ambiguous impact on landscape identity and the socio-cultural quality of the human living environment. By studying and time-tracking different landscape cases that experienced major displacements from around the world to one of landscape’s systemic components, the research results show some regular patterns in landscape identity changes, and how its structural tangible and intangible system performs and effects in creating, or destroying landscape identity, defying the limits of spatial and historical context. One realm of AI, recommender systems have attracted significant research attention due to concerns about its devastating effects to society’s most vulnerable and marginalised communities. Both media press and academic literature provide compelling evidence that AI-based recommendations help to perpetuate and exacerbate racial and gender biases. Yet, there is limited knowledge about the extent to which individuals might question AI-based recommendations when perceived as biased. To address this gap in knowledge, we investigate the effects of espoused national cultural values on AI questionability, by examining how individuals might question AI-based recommendations due to perceived racial or gender bias. Data collected from 387 survey respondents in the United States indicate that individuals with espoused national cultural values associated to collectivism, masculinity and uncertainty avoidance are more likely to question biased AI-based recommendations. This study advances understanding of how cultural values affect AI questionability due to perceived bias and it contributes to current academic discourse about the need to hold AI accountable.

Mancur Olson wrote his influential study Big Bills Left on the Sidewalk: Why Some Countries are Rich, and Others Poor in 1996. In his paper, Olson claimed that the differ-ences in economic development between countries are caused by only two factors: institutions and policies on the one hand and culture on the other. We attempt to test his conjecture using econometric modelling, combining and comparing it with a broadly defined orthodox production function in an indirect neoclassical notation (Solow-Minhas-Arrow-Chenery's SMAC framework). The "pseudo-production function" obtained is econometrically sound and of explanatory power similar to models including economic variables, although we find strong evidence of interdependence between capital-labour share and institutions and policies and culture. We consider the test, performed on panel data from 154 countries over five-year averages from 1980-2014, to be robust and consistent with Olson's ideas.

Character education is the primary weapon to form good quality students. However, the digital era's entry does not always have a positive impact, especially for students in Indonesia. The growth of individualistic attitudes, bullying behavior, lack of manners, and so on positively impact creating ethical and moral young generations. This is an urgency that must be addressed wisely in education to form a new character education model for students in Indonesia. Internalization of local-Bugis cultural values ​​is an urgency that must apply in the world of character education in Indonesia. The research method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method using secondary data and a case study approach to the adverse effects of the digital era for students in Indonesia. This study's results indicate that the local value of Bugis, which is reflected through Sipakatau, Sipakalebbi, and Sipakainge, will positively impact the character development of students in Indonesia. So that in the end, based on these local Bugis values, it is hoped that students will be able to improve ethics and other behaviors for the better.

World Heritage is the pinnacle of the recognition of the natural, aesthetic, and cultural value of a place on the planet. Since its inception in 1972, over 1100 sites have received World Heritage status. Many of these places are being challenged by the effects of climate change. Urgent action is needed to build the resilience and adaptive capacity of World Heritage sites in the face of climate change threats to come. The Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area (WTWHA) is one of the most effectively regulated and managed protected Areas in the world. This includes the scientific evidence upon which that regulation and management is based. However, there is growing evidence that climate change impacts are a clear and present threat to the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) upon which the listing is based. This challenges the very concept of OUV and points to the business-as-usual regulation and management not being sufficient to deal with the threat. It also calls for quantum changes in the approaches to protecting natural and cultural heritage and the OUV in World Heritage Areas. This WTWHA case study gives insights into the journey travelled and the pathways that need to be laid out to protect our most cherished internationally recognised natural and cultural landscapes. We demonstrate the importance of evidence in support of advocacy and management action to address the clear impacts of climate change on species, ecosystems, people, and societies living in the WTWHA. The strategic and climate adaptation plans provide the framework upon which these actions take place. Community engagement in the delivery of mitigation, adaptation, and resilience policy is key to the long-term future of the WTWHA.

One of Javanese literature attached to Javanese people is the story of Ajisaka, which was published among the people in verbal and writing. Ajisaka is a Javanese figure whom the Javanese people consider as the originator of Javanese script. One of the recorded of the story of Ajisaka was the Serat Ajisaka written by J. Kats using Javanese script. Serat Ajisaka is one of the stories from a collection of stories in the book entitled Serat Jawi Tanpa Sekar written by J. Kats, a Dutch writer in 1942. This research aims to describe the cultural values ​​in Serat Ajisaka by J. Kats in 1942 using philology studies. This research uses the descriptive method conducted in three stages, the first stage transcribing data, the second stage transliterating Latin script containing Javanese into Indonesian, then analyzing the cultural value in Serat Ajisaka. Serat Ajisaka has several concepts of cultural values, namely: 1) educational values, 2) religious values, 3) leadership values, 4) heroism values, 5) courage values, 6) simplicity values, 7) mutual-cooperation values, 8) moral values, and 9) the value of sacrifice for others.

The current study sought to understand the influence of cultural values on mental health attitudes and help-seeking behaviors in college students of diverse ethnic backgrounds. Asian and Latinx college students (N = 159) completed an online survey in which they reported on their adherence to cultural values as measured by ethnicity-specific cultural values and general attitudes towards mental health. Factor analysis revealed two common factors of cultural values irrespective of ethnicity: Interdependent Orientation (IO) and Cultural Obligation (CO). Regardless of ethnicity, the more students endorsed IO values, the less likely they were to perceive a need for mental health treatment. IO value adherence was also predictive of more negative attitudes towards mental health. CO values were not predictive of perceived need or help-seeking behaviors. Findings highlight the importance of understanding shared cultural values across ethnic-racial groups and considering how the multidimensionality of culture may help explain shared mental health behaviors crossing lines of ethnic group membership.

As to the bibliometric analysis, a network helps the readers to identify the most prominent research, if any, in terms of mutual references.FindingsRisk culture has been extensively investigated under different perspectives by scholars who belong to a research community not so much integrated in terms of reciprocal references.Practical implicationsManagers, policy makers and politicians should learn that it is important to understand risk culture because the effectiveness of corporate strategies and reforms pass also through cultural values of people that determine their conduct in the everyday lives.Originality/valueBeing still lacking, this article contributes to the literature by providing a novel theoretical framework that reconciles the different approaches through which risk culture has been investigated. The framework explains that behind risk culture there are always people and their behaviour facing risk and uncertainty. In the extent, bounded rationality might produce (mis)perceptions of risks, a large variety of human behaviour, and so different risk cultures can be observed.

There is a rapid pace of development of museum studies in Ukraine in the past decades. Museums are most advanced, and the theory and practice of museum work are improved. Over the years of independence, dozens of new museums of various directions have been opened. Museum annual forums have been established in Ukraine; several departments at universities foster museum academic excellence; hundreds of monuments are recorded. The market nature of the Ukrainian economy has brought to life a new branch of the museum field for our state. It is the expertise of historical and cultural values. All these drastic changes require generalisation and implementation in the educational process. The team of authors of the "Introduction to Museum and Monument Studies" textbook of the Department of Museum Studies and Expertise of Historical and Cultural Values at the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts set this problem. The peer-reviewed educational publication, in my opinion, is of great importance not only for the circle of specialists in the museum and monument preservation sector but also for a wide range of humanitarians, art historians, cultural scientists, historians, all those who are not indifferent to the historical fate and choice of our people.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to analyze the determinants of stunting prevention in relation to mothers with children aged 6–24 months in Madura Indonesia. METHODS: The design of this study was cross-sectional. The number of samples totaled 109 respondents using a purposive sampling technique. The independent variables were knowledge, attitudes, income, cultural values, and parenting. The dependent variable was stunting prevention. The data were collected using a questionnaire and then analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of α _< 0.05. RESULTS: The factors associated with stunting prevention were knowledge (p = 0.007), attitude (p = 0.034), income (p = 0.006), cultural values (p = 0.016), and parenting patterns (p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge, attitude, income, cultural values, and parenting influenced the parent’s strategy when it came to prevent stunting in their children. Stunting prevention programs should focus on improving parental behavior by modifying these factors.

Filial therapy (FT) has often been stated as an approach that can address the multicultural considerations of a variety of populations, in which parents are given the tools to strengthen their bonds with their child. This article describes counselors using FT as it applies to Hispanic and Latinx clients in the United States. Common cultural considerations are essential to consider when using FT with Hispanic and Latinx clients. The purpose of this article is to inform counselors about common values in the Hispanic and Latinx culture; application of FT with Hispanic and Latinx clients; and ethical, legal, and multicultural considerations when working with these populations.

Municipal markets have played an important role in social, cultural and economic activities of the communities. Municipal markets can be seen as a symbol of tradition and as part of a city's tangible and intangible heritage. Municipal markets are part of the cultural heritage of their related community and therefore they must be conserved and continuity should be provided for future generations. For sustainable use of municipal markets, they should answer the needs of today's community by preserving their authenticity. The aim of the study is to identify municipal markets in Cyprus and propose sustainable adaptive reuse strategies for their future use. The study includes a holistic approach since municipal markets from North and South part of the island is observed through site survey. The research is also emphasized the significance of municipal markets as a part of Cypriot culture. As the method of the study, the model for achieving sustainable adaptive reuse of traditional marketplaces is used for developing strategies for the future use of the municipal markets. The results of the research address that the municipal markets are important for the cultural heritage of the related community. However, in Cyprus they used more for the economic activities, and important social and cultural values were ignored. Municipal markets should be conserved by considering the tangible and intangible heritage values. Local needs, beliefs, practice and traditions should be taken into consideration with a holistic approach in the conservation process of municipal markets.

This study try to explain the description of the marketing mix activities, barriers and implications of marketing communication activities. The aim is to analyze the importance and impact of marketing in the business world by traders to attract consumers so that traders do not suffer losses. The research approach is qualitative with the case study method and uses interview techniques, field observations, and documentation. The main sources consist of traders and consumers who buy ceremony facilities who are directly involved in marketing communication activities. The results of this study explain that traders select and carry out elements in the marketing mix to carry out marketing communications, including products, prices, promotions, locations. The marketing mix that is carried out by traders provides exposure to target markets effectively which has an impact on consumer awareness by making repeat buyers. Barriers that occur in marketing communication activities consist of language disorders, physical problems, and technical problems. The implications that occur in communication activities experience positive and negative impacts including the ease of obtaining the need for ceremonial facilities positively, but negatively resulting in the fading of the cultural values ​​of the tablejitan tradition in ceremonial preparation activities because they prefer to buy rather than make.

Este artículo se dedica al estudio de las cuestiones psicológicas de la formación de valores socioculturales en los estudiantes. El cuestionario de valores personales de Schwartz, la metodología SAT de S. Shostrom y el cuestionario del autor se utilizaron para la medición en la investigación. 140 solteros participaron en el estudio. El objetivo de la investigación es determinar la relación entre valores socioculturales y rasgos de personalidad, logros académicos, situación económica y autorrealización en los estudiantes e identificar los valores que dominan en esta dirección. Se tomaron como factores clave el rendimiento académico, la demografía, el nivel de vida y las diferencias de género. Se utilizaron grupos experimentales y de control durante el estudio. El análisis de los resultados mostró que existe una correlación positiva entre los rasgos de personalidad y los valores socioculturales, pero esta tendencia es típica. La relación entre los valores de autorrealización de los estudiantes y los rasgos de personalidad es más alta que otros valores. Se puede concluir que estos valores son de carácter individual e incluyen parcialmente valores socioculturales. (r = 0.68, r = 0.52, r = 0.64) Se encontró que la relación entre valores multiculturales y altruistas y rasgos de personalidad es positiva en varios aspectos, especialmente iniciativa (r = 0.26), responsabilidad (r = 0.73), optimismo (r = 0,43). El estudio mostró que la correlación entre los valores de los estudiantes y el rendimiento académico (r = 0,599 **), el estado financiero (r = 0,564 **) y los factores demográficos (r = 0,446 **) es importante. Se puede sugerir que para formar valores socioculturales en los estudiantes, es necesario desarrollar rasgos de personalidad, incluyendo oportunidades para la autorrealización, para crear un ambiente educativo favorable para ellos.

Acreditamos ter alcançado êxito em demonstrar os vínculos das abordagens de Holanda em direções estético-expressivas sobre os ajustamentos e dissonâncias entre forma e conteúdo, cultura e Estado na história brasileira, nos períodos do Império e República. Holanda perscrutou os tempos brasileiros e divisou o distanciamento progressivo das formas políticas liberais em relação aos valores culturais do personalismo que caracterizaram a nossa história. Sua proposição é, ainda que difícil de ser vislumbrada, a favor de nova configuração da política em termos congênitos à específica cultura nacional, com o objetivo de melhor expressar os valores personalistas, em regime oligárquico/aristocrático, o que supostamente abriria a história brasileira para a criação de novas possibilidades.

English Language Teaching (ELT) materials are significant as tools in facilitating a second language teaching and learning including for preschool level. Also, it is necessary for teachers to opt for appropriate ELT materials which encompass cultural and local identity to generate a meaningful and relatable context of teaching and learning. Nonetheless, most of the materials currently available for preschool education in the publishing market are foreign and therefore little focus on local context. It is more evident in Islamic preschools, as the ELT materials need to be infused with Islamic values to align with the philosophy of Islamic preschools. Hence, this paper presents and discusses a part of a study on Islamic preschool teachers’ perception of the Soleh English (SE) teaching materials developed in the attempt to integrate Malay culture and Islamic values with ELT. The study employed a Case Study design involving five female Islamic preschool teachers in the Klang Valley Region. They were purposely chosen based on their experiences using the SE teaching materials. The data was obtained through semi-structured interviews and triangulated with a questionnaire and document analysis. The interview data reported in this article were thematically analysed. Findings illuminated four key themes for each research question which indicated that there is an integration of cultural and Islamic values in the SE teaching materials as well as in ESL teaching. This enabled the teachers to instil Islamic and cultural values in their English language teaching in contribution to generate noble citizens. The study "Socio-cultural differences between generations in Elbasan" was conducted to identify social and cultural factors that affect the growth of differences between generations in the family and society. Identification of socializing factors such as media, schools, technology, and impacts arising from other cultures through immigration. Underlining the importance and analysis of social and cultural elements in change as essential factors in the differences between generations gives meaning to this study. Bali is a tourist destination that is very popular in the country of Indonesia with a wealth of natural and cultural potential that is presented on this island of a thousand temples. One of the tourist objects in Bali, especially in Denpasar City, is the Kertalangu Cultural Village Tourism Object, which is located in the village of Kesiman Kertalangu. This tourism object offers local cultural potential and visual potential in the form of rice fields which can be an alternative tourism in the middle of conventional tourism development in Denpasar. However, the lack of attractiveness in this tourist attraction area has made visitors less enthusiastic about coming on a tour, so research is needed regarding the assessment of visual quality in this area as an effort to increase the attractiveness of traveling by optimizing the visual quality of the site. The purpose of this study was to examine the visual quality that can be an attraction in the Kertalangu Cultural Village. The methods used are VRAP and field surveys. The results provide some recommendations to develop landscape designs for Kertalangu Cultural Village based on the use of visuals and local cultural values.

Especially on social media, people represent their identity with photographs that are meant to communicate something about the person. In this context, unspecialized dating platforms likek Tinder receive special attention, since a very large quantity of photos is conceivable and the goal of success with potential partners suggests the consideration of socio-cultural values. The article explores the question of which values are communicated through photographs on Tinder and whether Tinder promotes or rather prevents the representation of diversity among heterosexual men. It becomes apparent that the photographs categorised by means of content analysis revolve around three areas of tension: nature, body, and casualness, each of which appears to be associated with certain values, including dominance, authenticity, and coolness.
