The recycling of polyvinylchloride (PVC) from waste electrical cables in blends with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is here explored, focusing on the material's mechanical and physical responses. Factors influencing these responses were identified, and reasonable ranges of variability were estimated for each factor. A comprehensive test plan was subsequently devised to develop optimal PVC/LDPE blends. The samples were produced by melt-blending the polymers in a counter-rotating internal mixer followed by compression molding. The effects of suitable coupling additives were also evaluated to enhance phases adhesion. The study investigated the impact of various processing parameters on thermomechanical properties using ANOVA, while a specific focus on optimizing material toughness was pursued. This optimization aimed to maximize both elastic modulus and elongation at break, through the application of genetic algorithms. Introducing a 5 % compatibilizer significantly enhances the interface, resulting in a complex fracture surface facilitated by its presence. Higher mixing temperatures promote better dispersion and distribution of PVC and the compatibilizer within the LDPE matrix, yielding a more uniform and interconnected structure. Increased PVC content correlates with reduced elastic modulus in the blend. The inclusion of a compatibilizer plays a vital role in counteracting the negative effects of PVC particles on stiffness, acting as a bridge to enhance interactions with the matrix and thereby improving interfacial adhesion and overall structure. The study offers insights into enhancing the recyclability of PVC from waste cables and optimizing the mechanical performance of the resultant materials.

The purpose of this work is to propose a decision-making algorithm to select the optimal composite material for thermally conductive but electrically insulating applications, such as microelectronic packaging heat sinks, diodes, and other electronic devices. In particular, an algorithm based on the criteria importance through inter-criteria correlation (CRITIC) and additive ratio assessment (ARAS) methods are used to evaluate several conflicting attributes. The evaluated samples were acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) composites filled with 0–30 vol% of boron nitride (BN) particles and prepared through melt compounding. The performance attributes considered through testing were heat conductivity, electrical resistivity, density, hardness, and tensile properties (Young's modulus, tensile strength, and elongation). As expected, the composite containing 30 vol% BN exhibited the highest heat conductivity, electrical resistivity, and Young's modulus. Meanwhile, unfilled ABS had the highest elongation at break, tensile strength, and lowest density. With respect to hardness, the 1 vol% BN-loaded composite proved to be superior. Therefore, the experimental data revealed a considerable compositional dependence with no obvious trend. The optimal composition was identified by adopting the CRITIC-ARAS multi-criteria decision-making algorithm, based on which the 30 vol% BN-containing composite was dominant among all the prepared samples. A validation through other decision-making techniques was performed to support the robustness of the proposed technique. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was carried out on several weight exchange scenarios to see the stability of the ranking results.

In the last years, continuous-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites (CFRTCs) received an increasing interest for their potential advantages over composites with thermosetting resin mainly in terms of i) shorter manufacturing cycles ii) higher impact resistance and toughness and iii) recyclability at the end of first life. The main strategies for recycling CFRTCs are here reviewed on the basis of the information available in the scientific literature. The main recycling options currently available for CFRTCs can be broadly divided into mechanical, thermal and chemical methodologies. Moreover, the concept of all-polymer composites, i.e. composites in which both matrix and reinforcing components are made with thermoplastic polymers, is discussed in view of their relevance in recycling technology.

Short-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites (SFRTCs) and particle-filled thermoplastic composites (PFTCs) are widely used in various industrial sectors, from automotive to electronic appliances, from building constructions to domestic equipment. Their environmental impact could be significantly reduced through both open and closed loop recycling, which allows a reduction of the usage of new resources and limit the energy consumption and CO2 release associated to their production. The main challenges and opportunities in the recycling of SFRTCs and PFTCs are currently represented by i) reprocessing (also called mechanical recycling), use of recycled matrices ii) use of recycled fibers, iii) use of waste composites, iv) chemical recycling. Opportunities and current limitations in the recycling strategies and technologies for SFRTCs and PFTCs are here reviewed.

This work aims to produce poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(alkylene furanoate)s (PAF)s fiber blends for textile applications and evaluates their microstructural, chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties. The work focuses on two PAFs with very different alkyl chain lengths, i.e., poly(ethylene 2,5−furandicarboxylate) (PEF) and poly(dodecamethylene 2,5−furandicarboxylate) (PDoF), which were blended in solution at various concentrations (in the range 2.5–10 wt %) with PLA, wet spun, and subsequently drawn. Light optical micrographs highlight that PLA/PEF blends present large and concentrate PEF domains, whereas PLA/PDoF blends show small and homogeneously distributed PDoF domains. The blends appear to be immiscible, which is confirmed also by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier−Transform Infrared (FT−IR) spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) highlights that the addition of the PAFs improves the thermal stability of the fibers. The drawing process, which was carried out at 80 °C with a heat setting step at 95 °C and at three draw ratios, improves the mechanical properties of the fibers upon the addition of the PAFs. The results obtained in this study are promising and may serve as a basis for future investigations on these novel bio−based fiber blends, which can contribute to increase the environmental sustainability of industrial textiles.

Three-dimensional printing offers a promising, challenging opportunity to manufacture component parts with ad hoc designed composite materials. In this study, the novelty of the research is the production of multiscale composites by means of a solvent-free process based on melt compounding of acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS), with various amounts of microfillers, i.e., milled (M) carbon fibers (CFs) and nanofillers, i.e., carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). The compounded materials were processed into compression molded sheets and into extruded filaments. The latter were then used to print fused filament fabrication (FFF) specimens. The multiscale addition of the microfillers inside the ABS matrix caused a notable increase in rigidity and a slight increase in strength. However, it also brought about a significant reduction of the strain at break. Importantly, GNPs addition had a good impact on the rigidity of the materials, whereas CNTs favored/improved the composites’ electrical conductivity. In particular, the addition of this nanofiller was very effective in improving the electrical conductivity compared to pure ABS and micro composites, even with the lowest CNT content. However, the filament extrusion and FFF process led to the creation of voids within the structure, causing a significant loss of mechanical properties and a slight improvement of the electrical conductivity of the printed multiscale composites. Selective parameters have been presented for the comparison and selection of compositions of multiscale nanocomposites.

In this work, a commercial linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) utilized for packaging applications was melt compounded with different amounts (from 10 up to 50 wt. %) of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)], with the aim to evaluate the possibility to partially replace LLDPE with a biodegradable matrix obtained from renewable resources. The processability, microstructural, and thermo-mechanical behavior of the resulting blends was investigated. Melt flow index (MFI) values of the LLDPE matrix were not much affected until a P(3HB) content of 20 wt.%, while for higher P(3HB) concentrations an evident decrease of the viscosity was detected. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations on the blends highlighted that at limited P(3HB) concentrations the secondary phase was homogeneously dispersed in form of isolated domains, while at a P(3HB) content of 50 wt.% a continuous layered morphology could be detected. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) did not evidence any chemical or physical interaction between the two polymer phases. Quasi-static tensile tests and dynamical mechanical analysis showed that the introduction of P(3HB) led to a pronounced stiffening effect, while the progressive drop of the yield and ultimate mechanical properties could be attributed to the weak interfacial adhesion and poor compatibility between the two matrices. The resistance to hydrolytic degradation of the LLDPE/P(3HB) blends was evaluated over a period of 100 days of immersion in water at 50°C. It was observed that the weight variation and the decrease of the tensile properties due to the hydrolytic process on the biodegradable phase were evident only for a P3HB content of 50 wt.%. In conclusion, this work showed that the partial replacement of LLDPE with a biobased P(3HB) could lead to the development of an innovative blend with good processability and mechanical properties, until a P(3HB) amount of 20 wt.%.

The simultaneous need for high specific mechanical properties and thermal energy storage (TES) function, present in several applications (e.g., electric vehicles), can be effectively addressed by multifunctional polymer-matrix composites containing a reinforcing agent and a phase change material (PCM). The PCMs generally decrease the mechanical properties of the host structural composites, but a multifunctional composite can still be beneficial in terms of mass saving, compared to two monofunctional units performing the structural and heat management functions individually. To quantify any possible advantages, this paper proposes an approach that determines the conditions for an effective mass saving at the system level and ranks the investigated structural TES composites with a parameter called multifunctional efficiency. It is found that the potential mass saving is higher when the volume fraction of the reinforcement is kept constant also when the PCM fraction increases or when the single phases (reinforcement, PCM) are themselves multifunctional.

The effects of two types of carbon nanotubes, namely multiwall (MWCNT) and single-wall (SWCNT) carbon nanotube, on the thermal and mechanical properties of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) nanocomposites, have been investigated. ABS filled-CNT nanocomposites with various filler loadings of 5–10 wt% were properly produced by a solvent-free process in blend compounding at 190 °C. Compression moulded plates and extruded filaments were obtained at 190 °C and 230 °C, respectively. Melt flow index (MFI), shore hardness, Vicat temperature, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were performed to characterize and compared the different CNT nanocomposites. ABS/SWCNT composite filaments showed higher tensile properties (i.e., stiffness and strength), than ABS/MWCNT. The electrical resistivity of ABS/SWCNT and ABS/MWCNT filaments decreased to 0.19 Ω.cm and 0.65 Ω.cm for nanocomposites with 10 wt% of nanofillers; a power law was presented to describe the electrical resistivity of composites as a function of the CNTs content. A final comparative parameter regarding melt flow, stiffness and conductivity was also evaluated for understanding the combined effects of the nanofillers. SWCNT nanocomposites exhibited better overall cumulative results than MWCNT nanocomposites.

This work focuses on flexible epoxy (EP) composites containing various amounts of neat and polydopamine (PDA)-coated paraffin microcapsules as a phase change material (PCM), which have potential applications as adhesives or flexible interfaces with thermal management capability for electronics or other high-value-added fields. After PDA modification, the surface of PDA-coated capsules (MC-PDA) becomes rough with a globular appearance, and the PDA layer enhances the adhesion with the surrounding epoxy matrix, as shown by scanning electron microscopy. PDA deposition parameters have been successfully tuned to obtain a PDA layer with a thickness of 53 ± 8 nm, and the total PDA mass in MC-PDA is only 2.2 wt %, considerably lower than previous results. This accounts for the fact that the phase change enthalpy of MC-PDA is only marginally lower than that of neat microcapsules (MC), being 221.1 J/g and 227.7 J/g, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry shows that the phase change enthalpy of the prepared composites increases with the capsule content (up to 87.8 J/g) and that the enthalpy of the composites containing MC-PDA is comparable to that of the composites with MC. Dynamic mechanical analysis evidences a decreasing step in the storage modulus of all composites at the glass transition of the EP phase, but no additional signals are detected at the PCM melting. PCM addition positively contributes to the storage modulus both at room temperature and above Tg of the EP phase, and this effect is more evident for composites containing MC-PDA. As the capsule content increases, the mechanical properties of the host EP matrix also increase in terms of elastic modulus (up to +195%), tensile strength (up to +42%), Shore D hardness (up to +36%), and creep compliance (down to −54% at 60 min). These effects are more evident for composites containing MC-PDA due to the enhanced interfacial adhesion.

The present work investigates the microstructural, thermo-mechanical, and electrical properties of a promising, but still not thoroughly studied, biobased polymer, i.e., poly(decylene furanoate) (PDeF), and its performance when multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are added. After sample preparation by solution mixing and film casting, the microstructural investigation evidences that the fracture surface becomes smoother and more homogeneous with a small fraction of CNTs, and that the production process is suitable to achieve good disentanglement and dispersion of CNTs within the matrix, although some aggregates are still observable. CNTs act as nucleating agents for PDeF crystals, as evidenced by differential scanning calorimetry, as the crystallinity degree increases from 43.2% of neat PDeF to 55.0% with a CNT content of 2 phr, while the crystallization temperature increases from 68.4 °C of PDeF to 91.7 °C of PDeF-CNT-2. A similar trend in crystallinity is confirmed by X-ray diffraction, after detailed Rietveld analysis with a three-phase model. CNTs also remarkably improve the mechanical performance of the bioderived polymer, as the elastic modulus increases up to 123% and the stress at break up to 131%. The strain at break also increases by +71% when a small amount of 0.25 phr of CNTs are added, which is probably the consequence of a more homogeneous microstructure. The long-term mechanical performance is also improved upon CNT addition, as the creep compliance decreases considerably, which was observed for both the elastic and the viscoelastic component. Finally, the films become electrically dissipative for a CNT content of 1 phr and conductive for a CNT amount of 2 phr. This study contributes to highlight the properties of bioderived furan-based polymer PDeF and evidences the potential of CNTs as a promising nanofiller for this matrix.

The present work reports on the production and characterization of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) hybrid nanocomposite filaments incorporating graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) suitable for fused filament fabrication (FFF). At first, nanocomposites with a total nanofiller content of GNP and/or CNT of 6 wt.% and a GNP/CNT relative percentage ratio of 0, 10, 30, 50, 70, and 100 were produced by melt compounding and compression molding. Their mechanical, electrical resistivity, and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) properties were evaluated. The hybrid nanocomposites showed a linear increase in modulus and decrease in strength as a function of GNP content; on the other hand, the addition of CNT in hybrid nanocomposites determined a positive increase in electrical conductivity, but a potentially critical decrease of melt flow index. Due to the favorable compromise between processability and enhancement of performance (i.e., mechanical and electrical properties), the hybrid composition of 50:50 GNP/CNT was selected as the most suitable for the filament production of 6 wt.% carbonaceous nanocomposites. EMI SE of ABS-filled single CNT and hybrid GNP/CNT nanofillers obtained from compression molding reached the requirement for applications (higher than −20 dB), while slightly lower EMI SE values (in the range −12/−16 dB) were obtained for FFF parts dependent on the building conditions.

In this work innovative thermal energy storage materials were developed by encapsulating a paraffin having a melting temperature of 6°C (M6D) in a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), and the most important physical properties of the resulting samples were investigated from a thermo-mechanical point of view. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) micrographs demonstrated a homogeneous microcapsules distribution and good interfacial adhesion with the TPU matrix even at elevated M6D concentrations. With a capsule concentration of 60 wt% it was possible to obtain elevated melting enthalpy values (up to 95 J/g), retaining the energy storage/release properties even after 50 thermal cycles. The hardness and the dimensional stability of the TPU matrix above its glass transition temperature were strongly increased upon M6D addition, but this stiffening effect was associated to a certain embrittlement. The investigated blends could be applied for winter sport application for low temperature thermal energy storage/release materials.

In this work liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP) nanocomposites reinforced with in-situ reduced graphene oxide are investigated. Graphene oxide (GO) was first synthesized by the Hummers method, and the kinetics of its thermal reduction was assessed. GO layers were then homogeneously dispersed in a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer matrix (Vectran®), and an in-situ thermal reduction of GO into reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was performed. Even at low rGO amount, the resulting nanocomposites exhibited an enhancement of both the mechanical properties and the thermal stability. Improvements of the creep stability and of the thermo-mechanical behavior were also observed upon nanofiller incorporation. Furthermore, in-situ thermal reduction of the insulating GO into the more electrically conductive rGO led to an important surface resistivity decrease in the nanofilled samples.

Nanocomposite fibers of isotactic polypropylene – fumed silica AR805 were prepared by melt compounding using a two-step process: melt-spinning and hot drawing at various draw ratios up to 15. Transmission electron microscopy revealed uniform dispersion of the silica nanoparticles in polypropylene matrix, although at higher concentrations and lower draw ratios the nanoparticles showed increasing tendency to form small agglomerates. On the other hand, at low concentrations the uniform distribution of fumed silica improved mechanical properties of the composite fibers, especially at higher draw ratios. Crystallinity and melting temperature of fibers were found to significantly increase after drawing. Elastic modulus at draw ratio = 10 rose from 5.3 GPa for neat PP up to 6.2–8.1 GPa for compositions in the range 0.25–2 vol% of the filler. Moreover, higher tensile strength and creep resistance were achieved, while strain at break was rather insensitive to the filler fraction. Considering all experimental results, a failure model was proposed to explain the toughness improvement during the drawing process by the induced orientation of polymer chains and the formation of voids.

Organically modified hydrotalcite is a recent class of organoclay based on layered double hydroxides (LDH), which is anionically modified with environmental friendly ligands such as fatty acids. In this paper the influence of hydrotalcite compounded/dispersed by means of two different processes for production of plates and fibers of polyolefin nanocomposites will be compared. A polyethylene matrix, suitable for fiber production, was firstly compounded with various amounts of hydrotalcite in the range of 0.5–5% by weight, and then compression moulded in plates whose thermomechanical properties were evaluated. Similar compositions were processed by using a co-rotating twin screw extruder in order to directly produce melt-spun fibers. The incorporation of clay into both bulk and fiber nanocomposites enhanced the thermal stability and induced heterogeneous nucleation of polyethylene crystals. Hydrotalcite manifested a satisfactory dispersion into the polymer matrix, and hence positively affected the mechanical properties in term of an increase of both Young’s modulus and tensile strength. Tenacity of nanocomposite as spun fibers was increased up to 30% with respect to the neat polymer. Moreover, the addition of LDH filler induced an increase of the tensile modulus of drawn fibers from 5.0 GPa (neat HDPE) up to 5.6–5.8 GPa.

Aim of the present study is to investigate how synthetic boehmite alumina (BA) nanoparticles modify the viscoleastic and fracture behaviour of linear low-density polyethylene. Nanocomposites containing up to 8 wt% of untreated and octyl silane-functionalized BA nanoparticles, were prepared by melt compounding and hot pressing. The BA nanoparticles were finely and unformly dispersed within the matrix according to scanning electron microscopy inspection. The results of quasi-static tensile tests indicated that nanoparticles can provide a remarkable stiffening effect at a rather low filler content. Short term creep tests showed that creep stability was significatively improved by nanofiller incorporation. Concurrently, both storage and loss moduli were enhanced in all nanocomposites, showing better result for surface treated nanoparticles. The plane-stress fracture toughness, evaluated by the essential work of fracture approach, manifested a dramatic increase (up to 64%) with the BA content, with no significant differences among the various types of BA nanoparticles.

The effects of carbonaceous nanoparticles, such as graphene (GNP) and multiwall carbon nanotube (CNT) on the mechanical and electrical properties of acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) nanocomposites have been investigated. Samples with various filler loadings were produced by solvent free process. Composites ABS/GNP showed higher stiffness, better creep stability and processability, but slightly lower tensile strength and electrical properties (low conductivity) when compared with ABS/CNT nanocomposites. Tensile modulus, tensile strength and creep stability of the nanocomposite, with 6 wt % of GNP, were increased by 47%, 1% and 42%, respectively, while analogous ABS/CNT nanocomposite showed respective values of 23%, 12% and 20%. The electrical percolation threshold was achieved at 7.3 wt % for GNP and 0.9 wt % for CNT. The peculiar behaviour of conductive CNT nanocomposites was also evidenced by the observation of the Joule’s effect after application of voltages of 12 and 24 V. Moreover, comparative parameters encompassing stiffness, melt flow and resistivity were proposed for a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of the fillers.

Composite acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS)/carbon nanotubes (CNT) filaments at 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 wt %, suitable for fused deposition modelling (FDM) were obtained by using a completely solvent-free process based on direct melt compounding and extrusion. The optimal CNT content in the filaments for FDM was found to be 6 wt %; for this composite, a detailed investigation of the thermal, mechanical and electrical properties was performed. Presence of CNT in ABS filaments and 3D-printed parts resulted in a significant enhancement of the tensile modulus and strength, accompanied by a reduction of the elongation at break. As documented by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, the stiffening effect of CNTs in ABS is particularly pronounced at high temperatures. Besides, the presence of CNT in 3D-printed parts accounts for better creep and thermal dimensional stabilities of 3D-printed parts, accompanied by a reduction of the coefficient of thermal expansion). 3D-printed nanocomposite samples with 6 wt % of CNT exhibited a good electrical conductivity, even if lower than pristine composite filaments.

polypropylene (PP) syntactic foams (SFs) containing hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) possess low density and elevated mechanical properties, which can be tuned according to the specific application. A possible way to improve their multifunctionality could be the incorporation of organic Phase Change Materials (PCMs), widely used for thermal energy storage (TES) applications. In the present work, a PCM constituted by encapsulated paraffin, having a melting temperature of 57 °C, was embedded in a compatibilized polypropylene SF by melt compounding and hot pressing at different relative amounts. The rheological, morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties of the prepared materials were systematically investigated. Rheological properties in the molten state were strongly affected by the introduction of both PCMs and HGMs. As expected, the introduction of HGMs reduced both the foam density and thermal conductivity, while the enthalpy of fusion (representing the TES capability) was proportional to the PCM concentration. The mechanical properties of these foams were improved by the incorporation of HGMs, while they were reduced by addition of PCMs. Therefore, the combination of PCMs and HGMs in a PP matrix generated multifunctional materials with tunable thermo-mechanical properties, with a wide range of applications in the automotive, oil, textile, electronics, and aerospace fields. Poisson's ratio of polymeric materials, although generally assumed as a constant, is known to display a viscoelastic dependence on time, temperature, and strain. This article investigates the phenomenology of this dependence on two crosslinked epoxy systems with different glass transition temperatures. Poisson's ratio measurements are performed by contact extens-ometers simultaneously measuring the axial and trans verse deformations under two different tensile testing conditions: (i) constant deformation rate, in which the effects of strain, strain rate, and temperature are high-lighted; (ii) stress relaxation (or constant deformation), where the dependence of Poisson's ratio on time is studied at various strain levels. The effects of two types of carbon nanotubes, namely multiwall (MWCNT) and single-wall (SWCNT) carbon nanotube, on the thermal and mechanical properties of acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene (ABS) nanocomposites, have been investigated. ABS filled-CNT nanocomposites with various filler loadings of 5-10 wt% were properly produced by a solvent-free process in blend compounding at 190 °C. Compression moulded plates and extruded filaments were obtained at 190 °C and 230 °C, respectively. Melt flow index (MFI), shore hardness, Vicat temperature, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were performed to characterize and compared the different CNT nanocomposites. ABS/SWCNT composite filaments showed higher tensile properties (i.e., stiffness and strength), than ABS/MWCNT. The electrical resistivity of ABS/SWCNT and ABS/MWCNT filaments decreased to 0.19 W.cm and 0.65 W.cm for nanocomposites with 10 wt% of nanofillers; a power law was presented to describe the electrical resistivity of composites as a function of the CNTs content. A final comparative parameter regarding melt flow, stiffness and conductivity was also evaluated for understanding the combined effects of the nanofillers.
