Abstract: [EN] A novel method to analyse the spatial distribution of neutrino candidates recorded with the ANTARES neutrino telescope is introduced, searching for an excess of neutrinos in a region of arbitrary size and shape from any direction in the sky. Techniques originating from the domains of machine learning, pat- tern recognition and image processing are used to purify the sample of neutrino candidates and for the analysis of the obtained skymap. In contrast to a dedicated search for a speci¿c neutrino emission model, this approach is sensitive to a wide range of possible morphologies of potential sources of high-energy neutrino emission. The application of these methods to ANTARES data yields a large-scale excess with a post-trial signi¿cance of 2.5¿ . Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a cubic-kilometer neutrino telescope located at the geographic South Pole. Buried deep under the Antarctic ice sheet, an array of 5160 Digital Optical Modules (DOMs) is used to capture the Cherenkov light emitted by relativistic particles generated from neutrino interactions. The main goal of IceCube is the detection of astrophysical neutrinos. In 2013 the IceCube neutrino telescope discovered a high-energy diffuse flux of neutrino events with energy ranging from tens of TeV up to few PeV of cosmic origin. Meanwhile, different analyses confirm the discovery and search for possible correlations with astrophysical sources. However, the source of these neutrinos remains a mystery, since no counterparts have been identified yet. In this contribution we give an overview of the detection principles of IceCube, the most recent results, and the plans for a next-generation neutrino detector, dubbed IceCube-Gen2.

Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory features approximately a cubic-kilometer volume of instrumented ice at the geographic South Pole. A high energy astrophysical neutrino flux has been observed, initially in 2013, as an excess of neutrinos above 10 TeV compared to the expectation from an atmospheric neutrino background. This signal, nowadays significant at >6 σ, has been observed both in neutrino interactions starting in the detector volume and in throughgoing muons generated in charged-current muon neutrino interactions outside the detector. No astrophysical objects have yet been identified as the flux source, which is currently consistent with an isotropic expectation. This paper reviews the evidence for the astrophysical flux and the status of the search for its sources. It also presents a discussion of proposed detector extensions being designed to solve the mystery of the astrophysical neutrino origin.

Abstract: Super-Kamiokande is a 50 kton water Cherenkov detector, which has been in operation since 1996. Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino data have a preference for the normal neutrino mass hierarchy ( Δ χ 2 = χ N H 2 − χ I H 2 = − 4.3 ) when the constraints from reactor neutrino experiments are included. The search for tau neutrino appearance from neutrino oscillations has resulted in a 4.6σ exclusion of the hypothesis of no tau appearance. Hyper-Kamiokande is a proposed next-generation water Cherenkov detector, which will be a natural extension of Super-Kamiokande. The proposed experiment will have two cylindrical tanks containing 520 kton of water in total. Hyper-K will search for CP violation using the neutrino beam from J-PARC, and will have a broad physics program including studies of atmospheric neutrinos, supernova burst neutrinos, geo-neutrinos and searches for proton decay.

Abstract: At the Baksan Neutrino Observatory (Institute for Nuclear Research, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow) deployed in the Caucasus mountains, it is proposed to create, at a depth corresponding to 4760 mwe, a large-volume neutrino detector on the basis of a liquid scintillator with a target mass of 10 kt. The detector in question is intended for recording natural fluxes of neutrinos whose energy may be as low as 100MeV. Neutrino fluxes from various sources are considered in the present study, and the expected effect in the proposed detector is estimated. The detector hat is being developed at the Baksan Neutrino Observatorywill become part of the world network of neutrino detectors for studying natural neutrino fluxes.

Abstract: The flavor composition of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos is a rich observable. However, present analyses cannot effectively distinguish particle showers induced by $\nu_e$ versus $\nu_\tau$. We show that this can be accomplished by measuring the intensities of the delayed, collective light emission from muon decays and neutron captures, which are, on average, greater for $\nu_\tau$ than for $\nu_e$. This new technique would significantly improve tests of the nature of astrophysical sources and of neutrino properties. Abstract: We present a real-time supernova neutrino burst monitor at Super-Kamiokande (SK). Detecting supernova explosions by neutrinos in real time is crucial for giving a clear picture of the explosion mechanism. Since the neutrinos are expected to come earlier than light, a fast broadcasting of the detection may give astronomers a chance to make electromagnetic radiation observations of the explosions right at the onset. The role of the monitor includes a fast announcement of the neutrino burst detection to the world and a determination of the supernova direction. Abstract: The chargeless, weakly interacting neutrinos are ideal astronomical messengers as they travel through space without scattering, absorption or deflection. But this weak interaction also makes them notoriously difficult to detect, leading to neutrino observatories requiring large-scale detectors. A few years ago, the IceCube experiment discovered neutrinos originating beyond the Sun with energies bracketed by those of the highest energy gamma rays and cosmic rays. I discuss how these high-energy neutrinos can be detected and what they can tell us about the origins of cosmic rays and about dark matter. Neutrinos from deep space can be used as astronomical messengers, providing clues about the origin of cosmic rays or dark matter. The IceCube experiment is leading the way in neutrino astronomy.

This review outlines the sequence of observations and their associated publications that solved the atmospheric neutrino anomaly and established the existence of neutrino oscillations with nearly maximal mixing of muon neutrinos and tau neutrinos. We also discuss subsequent and ongoing studies that use atmospheric neutrinos to continue to reveal the nature of the neutrino.

Abstract: On 8 March 2012, Yifang Wang, co-spokesperson of the Daya Bay Experiment and Director of Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, announced the discovery of a new type of neutrino oscillation with a surprisingly large mixing angle (θ13), signifying ‘a milestone in neutrino research’. Now his team is heading for a new goal—to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and to precisely measure oscillation parameters using the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory, which is due for completion in 2020. Neutrinos are fundamental particles that play important roles in both microscopic particle physics and macroscopic universe evolution. The studies on neutrinos, for example, may answer the question why our universe consists of much more matter than antimatter. But this is not an easy task. Though they are one of the most numerous particles in the universe and zip through our planet and bodies all the time, these tiny particles are like ‘ghost’, difficult to be captured. There are three flavors of neutrinos, known as electron neutrino (νe), muon neutrino (νμ), and tau neutrino (ντ), and their flavors could change as they travel through space via quantum interference. This phenomenon is known as neutrino oscillation or neutrino mixing. To determine the absolute mass of each type of neutrino and find out how they mix is very challenging. In a recent interview with NSR in Beijing, Yifang Wang explained how the Daya Bay Experiment on neutrino oscillation not only addressed the frontier problem in particle physics, but also harnessed the talents and existing technology in Chinese physics community. This achievement, Wang reckons, will not be an exception in Chinese high energy physics, when appropriate funding and organization for big science projects could be efficiently realized in the future.

Abstract: The discovery of cosmic neutrinos of astrophysical origin by IceCube has started a new chapter in the field of Neutrino Astronomy. Noticeably, a small accumulation of events in the region near the Galactic Centre has been observed: a telescope in the Mediterranean Sea constitutes a great opportunity for the physics quest, since it offers a perfect complementarity to IceCube and, in particular, a better visibility of the Galactic Centre. ANTARES (Astronomy with a Neutrino Telescope and Abyss Environmental RESearch) is the first operational Cherenkov neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea and the largest neutrino detector in the Northern hemisphere, covering an area of about 0.1 km2; located 40 km offshore Toulon, France, at a depth of 2475 m, it has been completed in June 2008 and it is currently taking data. It consists of a tri-dimensional array of 885 photo-multipliers tubes (PMTs), distributed in 12 lines. ANTARES has recently performed a search for an excess of high energy neutrinos in the direction of the Galactic Centre, close to the accumulation of the IceCube events, assuming both the hypotheses of a point-like and an extended neutrino source. The results of this search will be discussed in this contribution, together with other recent achievements of the experiment, as the search for point-like sources, the results on the diffuse flux of cosmic neutrino signal and the search for neutrino emission from the Fermi bubbles. ANTARES offers a first view of the Neutrino Sky from the Northern hemisphere; its successful operation and its promising results make more compelling the expectations for KM3NeT, the next generation neutrino experiment in the Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract: International audience; The Borexino detector was built starting from 1996 in the underground hall C of Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) in Italy under about 1400 m of rock (3800 m.w.e) and it is mostly aimed to the study in real-time of the low-energy solar neutrinos.Since the beginning of data taking, in May 2007, the unprecedented detector radio-purity made the performances of the detector unique: a milestone has been very recently achieved with the measurement of solar pp neutrino flux, providing the first direct observation in real time of the key fusion reaction powering the Sun.In this contribution the most important Borexino achievements to the fields of solar, geo-neutrino and particle physics are reviewed and the future perspectives discussed, emphasizing in particular the unique possibility of Borexino to cover at the end of its program the entire solar neutrino spectrum and to exploit the possible existence of a fourth sterile neutrino (SOX project).

Abstract: We study the production of sterile neutrinos in supernovae, focusing in particular on the keV--MeV mass range, which is the most interesting range if sterile neutrinos are to account for the dark matter in the Universe. Focusing on the simplest scenario in which sterile neutrinos mixes only with muon or tau neutrino, we argue that the production of keV--MeV sterile neutrinos can be strongly enhanced by a Mikheyev--Smirnov--Wolfenstein (MSW) resonance, so that a substantial flux is expected to emerge from a supernova, even if vacuum mixing angles between active and sterile neutrinos are tiny. Using energetics arguments, this yields limits on the sterile neutrino parameter space that reach down to mixing angles of the order of $\sin^2 2\theta \lesssim 10^{-14}$ and are up to an order of magnitude stronger than those from X-ray observations. While supernova limits suffer from larger systematic uncertainties than X-ray limits they apply also to scenarios in which sterile neutrinos are not abundantly produced in the early Universe. We also compute the flux of $\mathcal{O}(\text{MeV})$ photons expected from the decay of sterile neutrinos produced in supernovae, but find that it is beyond current observational reach even for a nearby supernova., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures. Abstract: The ANTARES neutrino telescope is currently the largest operating water Cherenkov detector and the largest neutrino detector in the Northern Hemisphere. Its main scientific target is the detection of high-energy (TeV and beyond) neutrinos from cosmic accelerators, as predicted by hadronic interaction models, and the measurement of the diffuse neutrino flux. Its location allows for surveying a large part of the Galactic Plane, including the Galactic Centre. In addition to the standalone searches for point-like and diffuse high-energy neutrino signals, ANTARES has developed a range of multi-messenger strategies to exploit the close connection between neutrinos and other cosmic messengers such as gamma-rays, charged cosmic rays and gravitational waves. This contribution provides an overview of the recently conducted analyses, including a search for neutrinos from the Fermi bubbles region, searches for optical counterparts with the TAToO program, and searches for neutrinos in correlation with gamma-ray bursts, blazars, and microquasars. Abstract: The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) experiment was constructed by an international scientific collaboration primarily to provide a clear determination of whether solar neutrinos change their flavor in transit from the core of the sun to the earth. The detector used 1000 tonnes of heavy water (>99.92% D2O) in an ultra-clean location 2 km underground in INCO's Creighton mine near Sudbury, Canada to observe two separate reactions of neutrinos on deuterium. The first reaction was sensitive only to electron flavor neutrinos and the second reaction was equally sensitive to all neutrino flavors. The measurements by SNO showed clearly that the hypothesis of no neutrino flavor change was ruled out by more than 5.3 standard deviations. The observation of flavor change for neutrinos implies that they have a non-zero mass. The measured total flux of active neutrinos from 8B decay in the sun was found to be in excellent agreement with the predictions of solar model calculations. Abstract: The experimental detection of the hidden periodicities in the activity of various radioactive sources which were observed by different instruments and which coincided with the period of the free oscillations of the Sun gave an impetus to the further research. The simultaneous recording of gamma rays from two radioactive sources revealed the elements of synchronism and the periods of solar oscillations as well as the phase delay for the different sources in the obtained time series. A neutrino detector has been designed and tested, the advanced schemes for neutrino detection are developed, and the impact of the neutrino source on the radioactive matter is explored. The search for the new principles for creating the emitters of neutrino beams is conducted.

Abstract: We analyze the 37 high energy neutrino candidates reported by the IceCube collaboration after three years ot time exposure. The total flux and distribution of these events clearly reveal the presence of extraterrestrial neutrinos since the atmospheric neutrino flux is not enough to explain the data. The usual candidate to explain the presence of these high energy events are astrophysical neutrinos generated from the interaction of cosmic rays with the intergalactic media. In this work we also pursue the possibility of explaining the IceCube data in the context of a decaying long lived particle (LLP) scenario. Indeed, we analyze three different scenarios considering multiple combinations of the sources mentioned above. We find that with the current data none of these scenarios is statistically preferred over the others. The necessary exposure time required to find significant differences between the scenarios is evaluated. For completeness we also present a working model that can accommodate the necessary LLP properties in order to explain the data.

Abstract: Oscillation experiments have by now established beyond doubt that neutrinos have a mass. The absolute scale of neutrino masses is the target of single beta decay and neutrinoless double beta-decay ( 0 ν DBD ) experiments, and can also be measured through cosmological observations, like those of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy spectrum or of the clustering of cosmic structures. Here we summarize the “Absolute neutrino mass scale“ session of the Neutrino Oscillation Workshop 2014. In the session, recent experimental results on the absolute neutrino mass scale from single and double beta decay experiments and from cosmology were presented, as well as proposals for future experiments in these and related fields. On the theoretical side, the talks discussed the issues concerning the uncertainties in 0 ν DBD experiments, the role of neutrinos in the non-linear evolution of cosmic structures, non-standard cosmological scenarios with sterile neutrinos, and flavour evolution in the early Universe.

Based on the success of IceCube, a new low energy in-fill, known as the Precision IceCube Next Generation Upgrade, is being proposed with the primary physics goal of resolving the ordering of the neutrino mass hierarchy.

Abstract: The prospects for future reactor neutrino experiments that would use tens of kilotons of liquid scintillator with a ∼ 50 km baseline are discussed. These experiments are generically dubbed “RRNOLD” for Radical Reactor Neutrino Oscillation Liquid scintillator Detector experiment. Such experiments are designed to resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy and make sub-percent measurements sin2θ12, Δm232 and Δm122 . RRNOLD would also be sensitive to neutrinos from other sources and have notable sensitivity to proton decay.

Abstract: Neutrino oscillation from muon neutrino to electron neutrino, which is induced by non-zero θ13 mixing angle, is expected to be influenced largely due to matter effect in the multi-GeV energy region in the atmospheric neutrinos. Since matter effect occurs on either neutrino or anti-neutrino depending on neutrino mass hierarchy, it is possible to deduce mass hierarchy by investigating electron neutrino oscillation separately for neutrino and anti-neutrino. We will report on the study of mass hierarchy determination using atmospheric neutrino data along with the latest oscillation analysis result in Super-Kamiokande.

Abstract: Scintillator detectors are known for their good light yield, energy resolution, timing characteristics and pulse shape discrimination capabilities. These features make the next-generation liquid scintillation detector LENA[1] (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy) the optimal choice for a wide range of astro-particle topics including supernova-, solar-, and geo neutrinos. In addition to the excellent calorimetric and timing properties, scintillartor detectors (LSDs) are also capable of topology reconstruction sufficient to discriminate with adequate efficiency between electron and muon neutrino induced charge current events and neutral current events in the GeV energy range. This feature makes LENA a competitive tool for the determination of the mass hierarchy (MH) with long baseline neutrino beams such as the proposed CN2PY beam (2288 km). This work summarizes the status of the current work on track reconstruction schemes and discusses the sensitivity limit for the neutrino mass hierarchy measurement with LENA.

Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory [1] was designed primarily to search for high-energy ( 100 TeV) neutrinos produced in distant astrophysical objects, and a search for high-energy neutrinos interacting inside the instrumented volume has recently provided evidence for a diffuse flux of such neutrinos [2]. Its energy threshold is however low enough to detect large numbers of neutrinos from the weak decays of pions and kaons produced in air showers; both the atmospheric νμ flux [3] and the sub-dominant atmospheric νe flux [4] have been observed by IceCube. A second, harder component of the atmospheric neutrino flux from decays of short-lived, charmed mesons in air showers has yet to be conclusively observed. Here, we present a strategy for extending the search for neutrino interactions in the instrumented volume down to ∼ 1 TeV and discuss the challenges of disentangling possible contributions of atmospheric charm decay from the high-energy extraterrestrial neutrino flux.

Abstract: The IceCube neutrino observatory at the South Pole is the largest operating neutrino detector in the world and spans a wide range of science topics, from astronomy at the PeV-scale to particle physics at the GeV-scale. We present results from the search for a light, O(1) eV 2 , sterile neutrino using the large IceCube array and, separately, using the lower energy extension DeepCore sub-array. Additionally, we review the atmospheric neutrino results and expected sensitivities related to oscillation physics (ν μ disappearance and ν τ appearance) as well as new limits on non-standard interactions. Continuing the success of the IceCube-DeepCore physics program, a proposed next generation in-fill detector with increased sensitivity to neutrinos of O(1) GeV will be covered.

Abstract: By transforming a cubic kilometer of natural Antarctic ice into a neutrino detector, the IceCube project created the opportunity to observe cosmic neutrinos. We describe the experiment and the complementary methods presently used to study the flux of the recently discovered cosmic neutrinos. In one method, events are selected in which neutrinos interacted inside the instrumented volume of the detector, yielding a sample of events dominated by neutrinos of electron and tau flavor. Alternatively, another method detects secondary muons produced by neutrinos selected for having traveled through the Earth to reach the detector, providing a pure sample of muon neutrinos. We will summarize the results obtained with the enlarged data set collected since the initial discovery and appraise the current status of high-energy neutrino astronomy. The large extragalactic neutrino flux observed points to a nonthermal universe with comparable energy in neutrinos, gamma rays and cosmic rays. Continued observations may be closing in on the source candidates. In this context, we highlight the potential of multimessenger analyses as well as the compelling case for constructing a next-generation detector larger in volume by one order of magnitude.

Abstract: [EN] A search for cosmic neutrino sources using the data collected with the ANTARES neutrino telescope between early 2007 and the end of 2015 is performed. For the first time, all neutrino interactions-charged and neutral-current interactions of all flavors-are considered in a search for point-like sources with the ANTARES detector. In previous analyses, only muon neutrino charged-current interactions were used. This is achieved by using a novel reconstruction algorithm for shower-like events in addition to the standard muon track reconstruction. The shower channel contributes about 23% of all signal events for an E-2 energy spectrum. No significant excess over background is found. The most signal-like cluster of events is located at (alpha, delta) = (343.8 degrees, 23.5 degrees) with a significance of 1.9 sigma. The neutrino flux sensitivity of the search is about E(2)d Phi/dE = 6 x 10(-9) GeV cm(-2) s(-1) for declinations from -90 degrees up to -42 degrees, and below 10(-8) GeV cm(-2) s(-1) for declinations up to 5 degrees. Abstract: [EN] Gamma-ray bursts are thought to be sites of hadronic acceleration, thus neutrinos are expected from the decay of charged particles, produced in p gamma interactions. The methods and results of a search for muon neutrinos in the data of the ANTARES neutrino telescope from four bright GRBs (GRB 080916C, GRB 110918A, GRB 130427A and GRB 130505A) observed between 2008 and 2013 are presented. Two scenarios of the fireball model have been investigated: the internal shock scenario, leading to the production of neutrinos with energies mainly above 100 TeV, and the photospheric scenario, characterized by a low-energy component in neutrino spectra due to the assumption of neutrino production closer to the central engine. Since no neutrino events have been detected in temporal and spatial coincidence with these bursts, upper limits at 90 per cent confidence level on the expected neutrino fluxes are derived. Abstract: Neutrino masses and the number of light neutrino species can be tested in a variety of laboratory experiments and also can be constrained by particle astrophysics and precision cosmology. A conflict between these various results could be an indication of new physics in the neutrino sector. Abstract: Some rare isotopes are produced by neutrino-induced reactions in supernova (SN) explosions (n-process). The isotope 92Nb decays to 92Zr with a half-life of 3.47 107 years. Although this isotope does not exist in the present solar system, the initial abundance ratio for 92Nb/93Nb at the time of solar system formation (SSF) have been measured in primitive meteorites. The astrophysical origin of 92Nb, however, has remained unknown. The SN n-process origin for 92Nb has been proposed and the SN calculation has demonstrated the n-process origin of 92Nb. The abundances of n-isotopes depend on neutrino temperatures. In the calculation, the average energies of kT = 3.2, 4.0, 6.0 MeV for the electron neutrino, anti-electron neutrino, and the other neutrinos (nm and nt ), respectively, were used. The observed ratio of 92Nb/93Nb 10????5 can be explained by the n-process.

Abstract: The recent results of solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations in Super-Kamiokande (SK) are presented. SK has four phases (SK-I to IV) since starting the operation in 1996. In this time update, the 2365 and 2520 days of data for SK-IV was used for solar and atmospheric neutrino analysis, respectively. In solar neutrino analysis, the lowering energy threshold (3.5MeV) has achieved in SK-IV thanks to the background reduction. More than 84,000 signals were totally observed in 5200 days through all the phases, and no long term flux time variation was seen. The night flux was 3.3¥% higher than day flux which caused by the neutrino oscillation of the matter effect of the earth at 3 sigma level. No significant distortion of the energy spectrum was seen. The obtained global neutrino oscillation parameters were determined as $\Delta m^2_{21} = 7.49 \times 10^{-5} eV^2$ and $\sin^2\theta_{12} = 0.308$. In atmospheric neutrinos, 0.33 MegatonYears of data were accumulated, and the analysis were carried out. The best fit of the neutrino oscillation parameters are $\Delta m^2_{32}=2.5 \times 10^{-3}, \sin^2\theta_{23}=0.587, \delta_{CP}=4.189$ for normal hierarchy case. The normal hierarchy is preferred with significance $\Delta \chi^2 = \chi^2(NH)-\chi^2(IH)=-4.3$. The tau neutrino appearance by atmospheric neutrino oscillation was confirmed at $4.6\sigma$ level.

Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a 20 kton liquid scintillator (LS) detector, which is planed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and measure the oscillation parameters at the sub-percent level using reactor antineutrino oscillations. As a multipurpose neutrino experiment, JUNO is also capable of measuring supernova burst neutrinos, the diffuse supernova neutrino background, geo-neutrinos, solar neutrinos and atmospheric neutrinos. After a brief introduction to the physics motivation, we discuss the status of the JUNO project, including the design of the detector systems. Finally the latest civil progress and future prospectives are also highlighted.

Abstract: The NO$$\nu$$A experiment aims to study the mixing behavior of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos using the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beam. The experiment collects data at two detectors, one near the neutrino production target at Fermilab; the other 810 km away. The detectors are 14 mrad off the beam axis, which results in an almost monoenergetic beam of 2 GeV neutrinos. The construction of the 14 kT Far Detector and 300 T Near Detector finished in 2014. Since then, NO$$\nu$$A has collected data and we will discuss the first data analyses using 2:74 x $$10^{20}$$ POT searching for muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance in the Far Detector.

Abstract: A short review on the next-generation experiments aiming to study the neutrinos produced in cosmic-ray induced atmospheric showers is presented. The projects currently proposed rely on different complementary detection techniques, from the successful water Cherenkov and magnetized tracko-calorimeter techniques to the more innovative Liquid Argon technology. As all of the proposed detectors must be deeply buried to mitigate the atmospheric muon background, many experiments are expected to be placed deep underground. Following the neutrino telescope approach, the largest ones will be located deep under the sea/ice. Several future projects are part of a wider physics program which includes a neutrino beam. For such cases, the focus is put on the expected performances with only using atmospheric neutrinos. The main physics thread of the review is the question of the determination of the ordering of the neutrino mass eigenstates, referred to as the neutrino mass hierarchy. This falls into the broader context of the precise measurement of the neutrino mixing parameters. The expected reach of the future planned detectors in this respect is also addressed.

Abstract: Neutrino Physics is one of the most active branches in particle physics. Many puzzles remain in neutrinos, which may lead to new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. We summarize the status and major scientific problems in neutrino physics, and introduce the neutrino program in China, with details on the on-going Daya Bay Neutrino Experiment and the being-built Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). Daya Bay discovered a new type of neutrino oscillation in 2012 and measured the corresponding neutrino mixing angle q 13, by detecting reactor neutrinos. In this paper, we introduce the physics background and the project background of Daya Bay, summarize the experimental method and design principles, and describe the detector design and construction. Many new ideas and technical innovations have been implemented in the detector design and construction, thus a 0.2% relative uncertainty from detector is achieved. In the next decades, the Daya Bay results will be the most precise measurement on this fundamental parameter. JUNO was proposed in 2008 and formally approved in 2013. It will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and precisely measure three neutrino mixing parameters by detecting reactor neutrinos at a distance of 53 km. With a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector of 3% energy resolution, JUNO will also be promising in studying supernovae neutrino, solar neutrino, geo-neutrino, atmospheric neutrino, as well as other exotic searches. It will be a multiple-purpose experimental platform for many world-leading researches. We introduce the progress on the experiment design and detector R&D. Besides Daya Bay and JUNO, we extend the neutrino studies by joining the neutrinoless double beta decay experiment EXO, and by starting R&D of MOMENT, a new idea to produce accelerator neutrino beam.
