The objectives of this module on making comparisons and ratios include using ratios to compare sets of objects and expressing ratios as decimals or fractions in lowest terms. The module provides six experiments. An envelope of manipulatives accompanies each of the first three experiments. The fourth experiment requires a multispeed bicycle. The fifth experiment requires the building of a gearboard. As an optional experiment, the student may be involved in small group work with a deck of cards. The module contains three enrichment cards which involve students in "real-life" problem situations. It also contains directions for utilizing a programmable calculator or computer. (Author/MK)

This module introduces the student to a formal study of probability. The lessons progress from elementary notions of least likely to more complex considerations of the probability of occurrence of one or more possible outcomes. Probability is introduced in an empirical sense through experimentation and investigation. In the later experiments, the students are shown how mathematical probability differs from empirical probability. The last three experiments of the module demand some fairly mature thinking on the part of the students. The teacher may prefer to use a classroom setting if these three experiments are used. This module utilizes hole punching with a pencil, paper folding, rubber band stretching, and unique board models to "picture" key geometric concepts in an intuitive manner. The module is virtually self-contained, except for common classroom items which are scissors and a protractor. The introductory lesson allows for a variety of approaches for the student to take as he/she experiments and looks for solutions to divergent questions. The five experiments involve inexpensive models which help the student build up a concept of key geometric ideas in a very concrete way. The module contains five enrichment cards, which involve students in problem situations that require the use of at least some of the geometric concepts stressed in the module. (Author/MK)
