Near an arbitrary finite gap potential we construct real analytic, canonical coordinates for the Benjamin-Ono equation on the torus having the following two main properties: (1) up to a remainder term, which is smoothing to any given order, the coordinate transformation is a pseudo-differential operator of order 0 with principal part given by a modified Fourier transform (modification by a phase factor) and (2) the pullback of the Hamiltonian of the Benjamin-Ono is in normal form up to order three and the corresponding Hamiltonian vector field admits an expansion in terms of para-differential operators. In this paper we obtain the following stability result for periodic multi-solitons of the KdV equation: We prove that under any given semilinear Hamiltonian perturbation of small size $\varepsilon > 0$, a large class of periodic multi-solitons of the KdV equation, including ones of large amplitude, are orbitally stable for a time interval of length at least $O(\varepsilon^{-2})$. For periodic Toda chains with a large number $N$ of particles we consider states which are $N^{-2}$-close to the equilibrium and constructed by discretizing arbitrary given $C^2-$functions with mesh size $N^{-1}.$ Our aim is to describe the spectrum of the Jacobi matrices $L\_N$ appearing in the Lax pair formulation of the dynamics of these states as $N \to \infty$. To this end we construct two Hill operators $H\_\pm$ -- such operators come up in the Lax pair formulation of the Korteweg-de Vries equation -- and prove by methods of semiclassical analysis that the asymptotics as $N \rightarrow \infty $ of the eigenvalues at the edges of the spectrum of $L\_N$ are of the form $\pm (2-(2N)^{-2} \lambda ^\pm \_n + \cdots )$ where $(\lambda ^\pm \_n)\_{n \geq 0}$ are the eigenvalues of $H\_\pm $. In the bulk of the spectrum, the eigenvalues are $o(N^{-2})$-close to the ones of the equilibrium matrix. As an application we obtain asymptotics of a similar type of the discriminant, associated to $L\_N$.

This paper describes the construction of a canonical compactification of the space of trajectories and of the unstable/stable sets of a generic gradient like vector field on a closed manifold as well as a canonical structure of a smooth manifold with corners of these spaces. As an application we discuss the geometric complex associated with a gradient like vector field and show how differential forms can be integrated on its unstable/stable sets. We consider the large number of particles limit of a periodic Toda lattice for a family of initial data close to the equilibrium state. We show that each of the two edges of the spectra of the corresponding Jacobi matrices is up to an error, determined by the spectra of two Hill operators, associated to this family. We then show that the spectra of the Jacobi matrices remain almost constant when the matrices evolve along the two limiting KdV equations. Finally we prove that the Toda actions, when appropriately renormalized, converge to the ones of KdV .

The periodic Toda lattice with $N$ sites is globally symplectomorphic to a two parameter family of $N-1$ coupled harmonic oscillators. The action variables fill out the whole positive quadrant of $\R^{N-1}$. We prove that in the interior of the positive quadrant as well as in a neighborhood of the origin, the Toda Hamiltonian is strictly convex and therefore Nekhoroshev's theorem applies on (almost) all parts of phase space., Comment: 28 pages

In this paper we investigate periodic FPU chains with an even number of particles. We show that near the equilibrium point, any such chain admits a \emph{resonant} Birkhoff normal form of order four which is \emph{completely integrable} - an important fact which helps explain the numerical experiments of Fermi, Pasta, and Ulam. We analyze the moment map of the integrable approximation of an even FPU chain. Unlike in the case of odd FPU chains these integrable systems (generically) exhibit hyperbolic dynamics. As an application we prove that any FPU chain with Dirichlet boundary conditions admits a Birkhoff normal form up to order four and show that a KAM theorem applies., Comment: 34 pages, 3 figures

We study the exponential maps induced by Sobolev type right-invariant (weak) Riemannian metrics of order $k\ge1$ on the Lie group of smooth, orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle. We prove that each of them defines an {\em analytic} Fr\'echet chart of the identity.

This is a short version of math.DG/0505537. For an acyclic representation of the fundamental group of a compact oriented odd-dimensional manifold, which is close enough to a unitary representation, we define a refinement of the Ray-Singer torsion associated to this representation. This new invariant can be viewed as an analytic counterpart of the refined combinatorial torsion introduced by Turaev. The refined analytic torsion is a holomorphic function of the representation of the fundamental group. When the representation is unitary, the absolute value of the refined analytic torsion is equal to the Ray-Singer torsion, while its phase is determined by the eta-invariant. The fact that the Ray-Singer torsion and the eta-invariant can be combined into one holomorphic function allows to use methods of complex analysis to study both invariants., Comment: 6 pages, to apper in Comptes rendus Acad. In this paper we find conditions which guarantee that a given flow $\Phi$ on a compact metric space $X$ admits a Lyapunov one-form $\omega$ lying in a prescribed \v{C}ech cohomology class $\xi\in \check H^1(X;\R)$. These conditions are formulated in terms of the restriction of $\xi$ to the chain recurrent set of $\Phi$. The result of the paper may be viewed as a generalization of a well-known theorem of C.
