We study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of powers of edge ideals. We prove that if G is a bipartite graph, then reg(I(G)^s) \leq 2s + reg I(G) - 2 for all s \geq 2, which is the best possible upper bound for any s. Suspension plays a key role in proof of the base case s =2.

The goal of this article is to compare the coefficients in the expansion of the permanent with those in the expansion of the determinant of a three-lines circulant matrix. As an application we prove a conjecture concerning the minimality of Galois-Togliatti systems.

In this paper, we study Lefschetz properties of Artinian reductions of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial $3$-polytopes. A $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex is said to be balanced if its graph is $d$-colorable. If a simplicial complex is balanced, then its Stanley-Reisner ring has a special system of parameters induced by the coloring. We prove that the Artinian reduction of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a balanced simplicial $3$-polytope with respect to this special system of parameters has the strong Lefschetz property if the characteristic of the base field is not two or three. Moreover, we characterize $(2,1)$-balanced simplicial polytopes, i.e., polytopes with exactly one red vertex and two blue vertices in each facet, such that an analogous property holds. In fact, we show that this is the case if and only if the induced graph on the blue vertices satisfies a Laman-type combinatorial condition., Comment: 15 pages

We consider two problems regarding vanishing patterns in the Betti table of edge ideals $I$ in polynomial algebra $S$. First, we show that the $j$-strand is connected if $j=3$ (for $j=2$ this is easy and known), and give examples where the $j$-strand is not connected for any $j>3$. Next, we apply our result on strand connectivity to establish the subadditivity conjecture for edge ideals, $t_{a+b}\leq t_a+t_b$, in case $b=2,3$ (the case $b=1$ is known). The notion of r-stackedness for simplicial polytopes was introduced by McMullen and Walkup in 1971 as a generalization of stacked polytopes. In this paper, we define the r-stackedness for triangulated homology manifolds and study their basic properties. In 1971, McMullen and Walkup posed the following conjecture, which is called the generalized lower bound conjecture: If $P$ is a simplicial $d$-polytope then its $h$-vector $(h_0,h_1,...,h_d)$ satisfies $h_0 \leq h_1 \leq ... \leq h_{\lfloor \frac d 2 \rfloor}$. Moreover, if $h_{r-1}=h_r$ for some $r \leq \frac d 2$ then $P$ can be triangulated without introducing simplices of dimension $\leq d-r$. The first part of the conjecture was solved by Stanley in 1980 using the hard Lefschetz theorem for projective toric varieties. In this paper, we give a proof of the remaining part of the conjecture. We study the topology of the lcm-lattice of edge ideals and derive upper bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the ideals. In this context it is natural to restrict to the family of graphs with no induced 4-cycle in their complement. Using the above method we obtain sharp upper bounds on the regularity when the complement is a chordal graph, or a cycle, or when the primal graph is claw free with no induced 4-cycle in its complement. The well known $g$-conjecture for homology spheres follows from the stronger conjecture that the face ring over the reals of a homology sphere, modulo a linear system of parameters, admits the strong-Lefschetz property. We prove that the strong-Lefschetz property is preserved under the following constructions on homology spheres: join, connected sum, and stellar subdivisions. We show that an 'almost strong Lefschetz' property holds for the barycentric subdivision of a shellable complex. From this we conclude that for the barycentric subdivision of a Cohen-Macaulay complex, the $h$-vector is unimodal, peaks in its middle degree (one of them if the dimension of the complex is even), and that its $g$-vector is an $M$-sequence. In particular, the (combinatorial) $g$-conjecture is verified for barycentric subdivisions of homology spheres. We try to understand the behavior of exterior algebraic shifting with respect to basic constructions on simplicial complexes, like union and join. In particular we give a complete combinatorial description of the shifting of a disjoint union, and more generally of a union along a simplex, in terms of the shifting of its components. As a corollary, we prove the following, conjectured by Kalai: $\Delta(K \cup L) = \Delta (\Delta(K) \cup \Delta(L))$, where $K,L$ are complexes, $\cup$ means disjoint union, and $\Delta$ is the exterior shifting operator. We give an example showing that replacing the operation 'union' with the operation 'join' in the above equation is wrong, disproving a conjecture made by Kalai.
