We discuss the appearance of spatial asymptotic expansions of solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation on $\mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, we prove that the Navier-Stokes equation is locally well-posed in a class of weighted Sobolev and asymptotic spaces. The solutions depend analytically on the initial data and time and (generically) develop non-trivial asymptotic terms as $|x|\to\infty$. In addition, the solutions have a spatial smoothing property that depends on the order of the asymptotic expansion.

In this paper we prove that the Benjamin-Ono equation is globally in time $C^0$-well-posed in the Hilbert space $H^{-1/2,\sqrt{\log}}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ of periodic distributions in $H^{-1/2}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ with $\sqrt{\log}$-weights. The space $H^{-1/2,\sqrt{\log}}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ can thus be considered as a maximal low regularity phase space for the Benjamin-Ono equation corresponding to the scale $H^s(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$, $s>-1/2$.

We prove that the Navier-Stokes equation for a viscous incompressible fluid in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is locally well-posed in spaces of functions allowing spatial asymptotic expansions with log terms as $|x|\to\infty$ of any a priori given order. The solution depends analytically on the initial data and time so that for any $0<\vartheta<\pi/2$ it can be holomorphically extended in time to a conic sector in $\mathbb{C}$ with angle $2\vartheta$ at zero. We discuss the approximation of solutions by their asymptotic parts.

We develop a framework for studying quasi-periodic maps and diffeomorphisms on $\mathbb{R}^n$. As an application, we prove that the Euler equation is locally well posed in a space of quasi-periodic vector fields on $\mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, the equation preserves the spatial quasi-periodicity of the initial data. Several results on the analytic dependence of solutions on the time and the initial data are proved.

We prove that the nonlinear Fourier transform of the Benjamin-Ono equation on $\mathbb{T}$, also referred to as Birkhoff map, is a real analytic diffeomorphism from the scale of Sobolev spaces $H^{s}_{0}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$, $s > -1/2$, to the scale of weighted $\ell^2-$sequence spaces, $\mathfrak{h}^{s +1/2}_{r,0}(\mathbb{N},\mathbb{C})$, $s >-1/2$. We prove smoothing properties of the solutions of the Benjamin-Ono equation in the Sobolev space $H^{s}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ for any $s\ge 0$. To this end we show that Tao's gauge transform is a high frequency approximation of the nonlinear Fourier transform $\Phi$ for the Benjamin-Ono equation, constructed in our previous work. The results of this paper are manifestations of the quasi-linear character of the Benjamin-Ono equation.

In this paper, we survey our recent results on the Benjamin-Ono equation on the torus. As an application of the methods developed we construct large families of periodic or quasiperiodic solutions, which are not $C^\infty$-smooth.

In this paper we prove that the Benjamin-Ono equation admits an analytic Birkhoff normal form in an open neighborhood of zero in $H^{s}_{0}(\T, \R)$ for any $s>-1/2$ where $H^{s}_{0}(\T, \R)$ denotes the subspace of the Sobolev space $H^{s}(\T, \R)$ of elements with mean $0$. We study the well-posedness and the spatial behavior at infinity of perfect fluid flows on $\R^d$ with initial data in a scale of weighted Sobolev spaces that allow spatial growth/decay at infinity as $|x|^\beta$ with $\beta<1/2$. In particular, we show that the solution of the Euler equation generically develops an asymptotic expansion at infinity with non-vanishing asymptotic terms that depend analytically on time and the initial data. We identify the evolution space for initial data in the Schwartz class with a certain space of symbols.

We prove that the Benjamin--Ono equation on the torus is globally in time well-posed in the Sobolev space $H^{s}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ for any $s > - 1/2$ and ill-posed for $s \le - 1/2$. Hence the critical Sobolev exponent $s_c=-1/2$ of the Benjamin--Ono equation is the threshold for well-posedness on the torus. The obtained solutions are almost periodic in time. Furthermore, we prove that the traveling wave solutions of the Benjamin-Ono equation on the torus are orbitally stable in $H^{s}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ for any $ s > - 1/2$. Novel conservation laws and a nonlinear Fourier transform on $H^{s}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ with $s > - 1/2$ are key ingredients into the proofs of these results., Comment: The paper is a greatly extended version of arXiv:1909.07314. We prove an infinite dimensional version of the Arnold-Liouville theorem for integrable non-linear PDEs: In a case study we consider the {\em focusing} NLS equation with periodic boundary conditions.

We prove that the heat equation on $\mathbb{R}^d$ is well-posed in certain spaces of functions allowing spatial asymptotic expansions as $|x|\to\infty$ of any a priori given order. In fact, we show that the Laplacian on such function spaces generates an analytic semigroup of angle $\pi/2$ with polynomial growth as $t\to\infty$. Generically, a large class of nonlinear heat flows have equilibrium solutions with spatial asymptotics of the considered type. We prove that the 2d Euler equation is globally well-posed in a space of vector fields having spatial asymptotic expansion at infinity of any a priori given order. The asymptotic coefficients of the solutions are holomorphic functions of $t$, do not involve (spacial) logarithmic terms, and develop even when the initial data has fast decay at infinity. We define the group of almost periodic diffeomorphisms on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and on an arbitrary Lie group. We then study the properties of its Riemannian and Lie group exponential maps and provide applications to fluid equations. In particular, we show that there exists a geodesic of a weak Riemannian metric on the group of almost periodic diffeomorphisms of the line that consists entirely of conjugate points., Comment: This is a slightly amended version of the paper

We prove that there exist potentials so that near them the focusing non-linear Schr\"odinger equation does not admit local Birkhoff coordinates. The proof is based on the construction of a local normal form of the linearization of the equation at such potentials.

In this paper we prove that the Euler equation describing the motion of an ideal fluid in $\R^d$ is well-posed in a class of functions allowing spatial asymptotic expansions as $|x|\to\infty$ of any a priori given order. These asymptotic expansions can involve log terms and lead to a family of conservation laws. Typically, the solutions of the Euler equation with initial data in the Schwartz class develop non-trivial spatial asymptotic expansions of the type considered here.

In this paper we prove approximation properties of the solutions of the defoucsing NLS equation on the circle by nearly linear flows. In addition we show that spatially periodic solutions of the defocusing NLS equation evolving in fractional Sobolev spaces $H^s$ with $s\geq 1$ remain bounded for all times.

We consider classes of diffeomorphisms of Euclidean space with partial asymptotic expansions at infinity; the remainder term lies in a weighted Sobolev space whose properties at infinity fit with the desired application. We show that two such classes of asymptotic diffeomorphisms form topological groups under composition. As such, they can be used in the study of fluid dynamics according to the method of V. Arnold. We develop a new approach for constructing normalized differentials on hyperelliptic curves of infinite genus and obtain uniform asymptotic estimates for the distribution of their zeros.

In this paper we consider the initial value problem for a family of shallow water equations on the line $\R$ with various asymptotic conditions at infinity. In particular we construct solutions with prescribed asymptotic expansion as $x\to\pm\infty$ and prove their invariance with respect to the solution map.

In this paper we prove new qualitative features of solutions of KdV on the circle. The first result says that the Fourier coefficients of a solution of KdV in Sobolev space $H^N,\, N\geq 0$, admit a WKB type expansion up to first order with strongly oscillating phase factors defined in terms of the KdV frequencies. The second result provides estimates for the approximation of such a solution by trigonometric polynomials of sufficiently large degree.

For $M$ being a closed manifold or the Euclidean space we present a detailed proof of regularity properties of the composition of $H^s$-regular diffeomorphisms of $M$ for $s > 1/2\dim M + 1$.

We construct normalized differentials on families of curves of infinite genus. Such curves are used to investigate integrable PDE's such as the focusing Nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation.

We prove that the Birkhoff map $\Om$ for KdV constructed on $H^{-1}_0(\T)$ can be interpolated between $H^{-1}_0(\T)$ and $L^2_0(\T)$. In particular, the symplectic phase space $H^{1/2}_0(\T)$ can be described in terms of Birkhoff coordinates. As an application, we characterize the regularity of a potential $q\in H^{-1}(\T)$ in terms of the decay of the gap lengths of the periodic spectrum of Hill's operator on the interval $[0,2]$.

We study the exponential maps induced by Sobolev type right-invariant (weak) Riemannian metrics of order $k\ge1$ on the Lie group of smooth, orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle. We prove that each of them defines an {\em analytic} Fr\'echet chart of the identity.

In 1974 P. Lax introduced an algebro-analytic mechanism similar to the Lax L-A pair. Using it we prove global existence and uniqueness for solutions of the initial value problem for mKdV in classes of smooth functions which can be unbounded at infinity, and may even include functions which tend to infinity with respect to the space variable. The Miura map (introduced by Miura) is a nonlinear map between function spaces which transforms smooth solutions of the modified Korteweg - de Vries equation (mKdV) to solutions of the Korteweg - de Vries equation (KdV). In this paper we study relations between the Miura map and Schroedinger operators with real-valued distributional potentials (possibly not decaying at infinity) from various spaces. We also investigate mapping properties of the Miura map in these spaces. As an application we prove existence of solutions of the Korteweg - de Vries equation in the negative Sobolev space H^{-1} for the initial data in the range of the Miura map., Comment: 33 pages
