A splinter is a notion of singularity that has seen numerous recent applications, especially in connection with the direct summand theorem, the mixed characteristic minimal model program, Cohen-Macaulayness of absolute integral closures and cohomology vanishing theorems. Nevertheless, many basic questions about these singularities remain elusive. One outstanding problem is whether the splinter property spreads from a point to an open neighborhood of a noetherian scheme. Our paper addresses this problem in prime characteristic, where we show that a locally noetherian scheme that has finite Frobenius or that is locally essentially of finite type over a quasi-excellent local ring has an open splinter locus. In particular, all varieties over fields of positive characteristic have open splinter loci. Intimate connections are established between the openness of splinter loci and $F$-compatible ideals, which are prime characteristic analogues of log canonical centers. We prove the surprising fact that for a large class of noetherian rings with pure (aka universally injective) Frobenius, the splinter condition is detected by the splitting of a single generically \'etale finite extension. Codimension two Artinian algebras $A$ have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is greater than the socle degree of $A$, we show that $A$ is almost strong Lefschetz. This quite modest result is nevertheless arguably the most encompassing so far concerning the strong Lefschetz property for graded codimension three AG algebras.

Given a generically finite local extension of valuation rings $V \subset W$, the question of whether $W$ is the localization of a finitely generated $V$-algebra is significant for approaches to the problem of local uniformization of valuations using ramification theory. Hagen Knaf proposed a characterization of when $W$ is essentially of finite type over $V$ in terms of classical invariants of the extension of associated valuations. Knaf's conjecture has been verified in important special cases by Cutkosky and Novacoski using local uniformization of Abhyankar valuations and resolution of singularities of excellent surfaces in arbitrary characteristic, and by Cutkosky for valuation rings of function fields of characteristic $0$ using embedded resolution of singularities. This paper considers the problems of finite determinacy and approximation of flat analytic maps from germs of real or complex analytic spaces. It is shown that the flatness of analytic maps from germs of real or complex analytic spaces whose local rings are Cohen-Macaulay is finitely determined. Further, it is shown that flat maps from complete intersection and Cohen-Macaulay analytic germs can be arbitrarily closely approximated by algebraic and Nash maps respectively in such a way that the Hilbert-Samuel function of the special fibre is preserved. It is also proved that in the complex case the preservation of the Hilbert-Samuel function implies the preservation of Whitney's tangent cone., Comment: 13 pages. The Bernstein-Sato polynomial is an important invariant of an element or an ideal in a polynomial ring or power series ring of characteristic zero, with interesting connections to various algebraic and topological aspects of the singularities of the vanishing locus. Work of Musta\c{t}\u{a}, later extended by Bitoun and the third author, provides an analogous Bernstein-Sato theory for regular rings of positive characteristic. In this paper, we extend this theory to singular ambient rings in positive characteristic. We establish finiteness and rationality results for Bernstein-Sato roots for large classes of singular rings, and relate these roots to other classes of numerical invariants defined via the Frobenius map. In this paper we define and explore the analytic spread $\ell(\mathcal I)$ of a filtration in a local ring. We show that, especially for divisorial and symbolic filtrations, some basic properties of the analytic spread of an ideal extend to filtrations, even when the filtration is non Noetherian. We also illustrate some significant differences between the analytic spread of a filtration and the analytic spread of an ideal with examples. In the case of an ideal $I$, we have the classical bounds $\mbox{ht}(I)\le\ell(I)\le \dim R$. The upper bound $\ell(\mathcal I)\le \dim R$ is true for filtrations $\mathcal I$, but the lower bound is not true for all filtrations. We show that for the filtration $\mathcal I$ of symbolic powers of a height two prime ideal $\mathfrak p$ in a regular local ring of dimension three (a space curve singularity), so that $\mbox{ht}(\mathcal I) =2$ and $\dim R=3$, we have that $0\le \ell(\mathcal I)\le 2$ and all values of 0,1 and 2 can occur. In the cases of analytic spread 0 and 1 the symbolic algebra is necessarily non-Noetherian. We show that the shortest nonzero polynomials vanishing on bounded-rank matrices and skew-symmetric matrices are the determinants and Pfaffians characterising the rank. Algebraically, this means that in the ideal generated by all $t$-minors or $t$-Pfaffians of a generic matrix or skew-symmetric matrix one cannot find any polynomial with fewer terms than those determinants or Pfaffians, respectively, and that those determinants and Pfaffians are essentially the only polynomials in the ideal with that many terms. The first goal of the present paper is to study the class groups of the edge rings of complete multipartite graphs, denoted by $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$, where $1 \leq r_1 \leq \cdots \leq r_n$. More concretely, we prove that the class group of $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^n$ if $n =3$ with $r_1 \geq 2$ or $n \geq 4$, while it turns out that the excluded cases can be deduced into Hibi rings. The second goal is to investigate the special class of divisorial ideals of $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$, called conic divisorial ideals. We describe conic divisorial ideals for certain $K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}$ including all cases where $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$ is Gorenstein. The containment problem for symbolic and ordinary powers of ideals asks for what values of $a$ and $b$ we have $I^{(a)} \subseteq I^b$. Over a regular ring, a result by Ein-Lazarsfeld-Smith, Hochster-Huneke, and Ma-Schwede partially answers this question, but the containments it provides are not always best possible. In particular, a tighter containment conjectured by Harbourne has been shown to hold for interesting classes of ideals - although it does not hold in general. In this paper, we develop a Fedder (respectively, Glassbrenner) type criterion for $F$-purity (respectively, strong $F$-regularity) for ideals of finite projective dimension over $F$-finite Gorenstein rings and use our criteria to extend the prime characteristic results of Grifo-Huneke to singular ambient rings. Tropical ideals are a class of ideals in the tropical polynomial semiring that combinatorially abstracts the possible collections of supports of all polynomials in an ideal over a field. We study zero-dimensional tropical ideals I with Boolean coefficients in which all underlying matroids are paving matroids, or equivalently, in which all polynomials of minimal support have support of size deg(I) or deg(I)+1 -- we call them paving tropical ideals. We show that paving tropical ideals of degree d+1 are in bijection with $\mathbb Z^n$-invariant d-partitions of $\mathbb Z^n$. This implies that zero-dimensional tropical ideals of degree 3 with Boolean coefficients are in bijection with $\mathbb Z^n$-invariant 2-partitions of quotient groups of the form $\mathbb Z^n/L$. We provide several applications of these techniques, including a construction of uncountably many zero-dimensional degree-3 tropical ideals in one variable with Boolean coefficients, and new examples of non-realizable zero-dimensional tropical ideals., Comment: 13 pages

We extend the theory of Koszul modules to the bi-graded case, and prove a vanishing theorem that allows us to show that the Canonical Ribbon Conjecture of Bayer and Eisenbud holds over a field of characteristic zero or at least equal to the Clifford index. Our results confirm a conjecture of Eisenbud and Schreyer regarding the characteristics where the generic statement of Green's conjecture holds. Finite generation of the symbolic Rees ring of a space monomial prime ideal of a 3-dimensional weighted polynomial ring is a very interesting problem. Negative curves play important roles in finite generation of these rings. We are interested in the structure of the negative curve. We shall prove that negative curves are rational in many cases. We also see that the Cox ring of the blow-up of a toric variety at the point (1,1,...,1) coincides with the extended symbolic Rees ring of an ideal of a polynomial ring. We show that the number of rational points of a subgroup inside a toric variety over a finite field defined by a homogeneous lattice ideal can be computed via Smith normal form of the matrix whose columns constitute a basis of the lattice. This generalizes and yields a concise toric geometric proof of the same fact proven purely algebraically by Lopez and Villarreal for the case of a projective space and a standard homogeneous lattice ideal of dimension one. We also prove a Nullstellensatz type theorem over a finite field establishing a one to one correspondence between subgroups of the dense split torus and certain homogeneous lattice ideals. When studying a graded module $M$ over the Cox ring of a smooth projective toric variety $X$, there are two standard types of resolutions commonly used to glean information: free resolutions of $M$ and vector bundle resolutions of its sheafification. Each approach comes with its own challenges. There is geometric information that free resolutions fail to encode, while vector bundle resolutions can resist study using algebraic and combinatorial techniques. Recently, Berkesch, Erman, and Smith introduced virtual resolutions, which capture desirable geometric information and are also amenable to algebraic and combinatorial study. The theory of virtual resolutions includes a notion of a virtually Cohen--Macaulay property, though tools for assessing which modules are virtually Cohen--Macaulay have only recently started to be developed. In this paper, we continue this research program in two related ways. The first is that, when $X$ is a product of projective spaces, we produce a large new class of virtually Cohen--Macaulay Stanley--Reisner rings, which we show to be virtually Cohen--Macaulay via explicit constructions of appropriate virtual resolutions reflecting the underlying combinatorial structure. The second is that, for an arbitrary smooth projective toric variety $X$, we develop homological tools for assessing the virtual Cohen--Macaulay property. Some of these tools give exclusionary criteria, and others are constructive methods for producing suitably short virtual resolutions. In this paper, using ultra-Frobenii, we introduce a variant of Schoutens' non-standard tight closure, ultra-tight closure, on ideals of a local domain $R$ essentially of finite type over $\mathbb{C}$. We prove that the ultra-test ideal $\tau_{\rm u}(R,\mathfrak{a}^t)$, the annihilator ideal of all ultra-tight closure relations of $R$, coincides with the multiplier ideal $\mathcal{J}(\operatorname{Spec} R,\mathfrak{a}^t)$ if $R$ is normal $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein. We introduce a "workable" notion of degree for non-homogeneous polynomial ideals and formulate and prove ideal theoretic B\'ezout Inequalities for the sum of two ideals in terms of this notion of degree and the degree of generators. Let $S$ be an unramified regular local ring of mixed characteristic two and $R$ the integral closure of $S$ in a biquadratic extension of its quotient field obtained by adjoining roots of sufficiently general square free elements $f,g\in S$. Let $S^2$ denote the subring of $S$ obtained by lifting to $S$ the image of the Frobenius map on $S/2S$. The geometric vertex decomposability property for polynomial ideals is an ideal-theoretic generalization of the vertex decomposability property for simplicial complexes. Indeed, a homogeneous geometrically vertex decomposable ideal is radical and Cohen-Macaulay, and is in the Gorenstein liaison class of a complete intersection (glicci). In this paper, we initiate an investigation into when the toric ideal $I_G$ of a finite simple graph $G$ is geometrically vertex decomposable. We first show how geometric vertex decomposability behaves under tensor products, which allows us to restrict to connected graphs. We then describe a graph operation that preserves geometric vertex decomposability, thus allowing us to build many graphs whose corresponding toric ideals are geometrically vertex decomposable. Using work of Constantinescu and Gorla, we prove that toric ideals of bipartite graphs are geometrically vertex decomposable. We also propose a conjecture that all toric ideals of graphs with a square-free degeneration with respect to a lexicographic order are geometrically vertex decomposable. As evidence, we prove the conjecture in the case that the universal Gr\"obner basis of $I_G$ is a set of quadratic binomials. Utilizing ultraproducts, Schoutens constructed a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra $\mathcal{B}(R)$ over a local domain $R$ essentially of finite type over $\mathbb{C}$. Motivated by applications to the theory of error-correcting codes, we give an algorithmic method for computing a generating set for the ideal generated by $\beta$-graded polynomials vanishing on a subset of a simplicial complete toric variety $X$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, parameterized by rational functions, where $\beta$ is a $d\times r$ matrix whose columns generate a subsemigroup $\mathbb{N}\beta$ of $\mathbb{N}^d$. We also give a method for computing the vanishing ideal of the set of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points of $X$. The aim of this work is to study the dual and the algebraic dual of an evaluation code using standard monomials and indicator functions. We show that the dual of an evaluation code is the evaluation code of the algebraic dual. We develop an algorithm for computing a basis for the algebraic dual. Let $C_1$ and $C_2$ be linear codes spanned by standard monomials. We give a combinatorial condition for the monomial equivalence of $C_1$ and the dual $C_2^\perp$. Moreover, we give an explicit description of a generator matrix of $C_2^\perp$ in terms of that of $C_1$ and coefficients of indicator functions. Let $R$ be the power series ring or the polynomial ring over a field $k$ and let $I $ be an ideal of $R.$ Macaulay proved that the Artinian Gorenstein $k$-algebras $R/I$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the cyclic $R$-submodules of the divided power series ring $\Gamma. $ The result is effective in the sense that any polynomial of degree $s$ produces an Artinian Gorenstein $k$-algebra of socle degree $s.$ In a recent paper, the authors extended Macaulay's correspondence characterizing the $R$-submodules of $\Gamma $ in one-to-one correspondence with Gorenstein d-dimensional $k$-algebras. However, these submodules in positive dimension are not finitely generated. Our goal is to give constructive and finite procedures for the construction of Gorenstein $k$-algebras of dimension one and any codimension. In this article, we study certain local cohomology modules over $F$-pure rings. We give sufficient conditions for the vanishing of some Lyubeznik numbers, derive a formula for computing these invariants when the $F$-pure ring is standard graded and, by its means, we provide some new examples of Lyubeznik tables. We study associated primes of certain Ext-modules, showing that they are all compatible ideals. We study finite $0$-dimensional schemes in product of multiprojective spaces and their ideals. We study the question of when a ring can be realized as a direct summand of a regular ring by examining the case of homogeneous coordinate rings. We present very strong obstacles to expressing a graded ring with isolated singularity as a finite graded direct summand. For several classes of examples (del Pezzo surfaces, hypersurfaces), we give a complete classification of which coordinate rings can be expressed as direct summands (not necessarily finite), and in doing so answer a question of Hara about the FFRT property of the quintic del Pezzo. We also examine what happens in the case where the ring does not have isolated singularities, through topological arguments: as an example, we give a classification of which coordinate rings of singular cubic surfaces can be written as finite direct summands of regular rings., 19 pages. To every toric ideal one can associate an oriented matroid structure, consisting of a graph and another toric ideal, called bouquet ideal. The connected components of this graph are called bouquets. Bouquets are of three types; free, mixed and non mixed. We prove that the cardinality of the following sets - the set of indispensable elements, minimal Markov bases, the Universal Markov basis and the Universal Gr\"obner basis of a toric ideal - depends only on the type of the bouquets and the bouquet ideal. These results enable us to introduce the strongly robustness simplicial complex and show that it determines the strongly robustness property. We provide a generalization of Jouanolou duality that is applicable to a plethora of situations. The environment where this generalized duality takes place is a new class of rings, that we introduce and call weakly Gorenstein. As a main consequence, we obtain a new general framework to investigate blowup algebras. We use our results to study and determine the defining equations of the Rees algebra of certain families of ideals.

In the present paper we study algebraic properties of edge ideals associated with plane curve arrangements via their Levi graphs. Using combinatorial properties of such Levi graphs we are able to describe those monomial algebras being Cohen-Macaulay, Buchsbaum, and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. We also condsider the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for these edge ideals. We provide effective lower and upper bounds on them. Burban-Drozd showed that the degenerate cusp singularities have tame Cohen-Macaulay representation type, and classified all indecomposable Cohen-Macaulay modules over them. One of their main example is the non-isolated singularity $W=xyz$. On the other hand, Abouzaid-Auroux-Efimov-Katzarkov-Orlov showed that $W=xyz$ is mirror to a pair of pants. In this paper, we investigate homological mirror symmetry of these indecomposable Cohen-Macaulay modules for $xyz$. Namely, we show that closed geodesics (with a flat $\mathbb{C}$-bundle) of a hyperbolic pair of pants have a one-to-one correspondence with indecomposable Cohen-Macaulay modules for $xyz$ with multiplicity one that are locally free on the punctured spectrum. In particular, this correspondence is established first by a geometric $A_{\infty}$-functor from the Fukaya category of the pair of pants to the matrix factorization category of $xyz$, and next by the correspondence between Cohen-Macaulay modules and matrix factorizations due to Eisenbud. For the latter, we compute explicit Macaulayfications of modules from Burban-Drozd's classification and find a canonical form of the corresponding matrix factorizations. In the sequel, we will show that indecomposable modules with higher multiplicity correspond to twisted complexes of closed geodesics. We also find mirror images of rank $1$ indecomposable Cohen-Macaulay modules (of band type) over the singularity $W = x^{3} + y^{2} - xyz$ as closed loops in the orbifold sphere $\mathbb{P}^1_{3,2,\infty}$., 93 pages, 36 figures

We give short, closure-theoretic proofs for uniform bounds on the growth of symbolic powers of ideals in regular rings. The author recently proved these bounds in mixed characteristic using various versions of perfectoid/big Cohen-Macaulay test ideals, with special cases obtained earlier by Ma and Schwede. In mixed characteristic, we instead use Heitmann's full extended plus (epf) closure, Jiang's weak epf (wepf) closure, and R.G.'s results on closure operations that induce big Cohen-Macaulay algebras. Our strategy also applies to any Dietz closure satisfying R.G.'s algebra axiom and a Brian\c{c}on-Skoda-type theorem, and hence yields new proofs of these results on uniform bounds on the growth of symbolic powers of ideals in regular rings of all characteristics. We apply Ohi's criterion for faithfully flatness of extensions of commutative rings to prove that any \'etale extension $k[Y_1, \ldots, Y_n]\subseteq k[X_1, \ldots, X_n]$ of polynomial rings (each in $n$ indeterminates) over a commutative ring $k$ is faithfully flat. In particular, if $k$ is an algebraically closed field then any \'etale polynomial map $k^{n} \to k^{n}$ is surjective.

Over a field of characteristic $0$, we construct a minimal set of generators of the defining ideals of closures of nilpotent conjugacy class in the set of $n \times n$ matrices. This modifies a conjecture of Weyman and provides a complete answer to it.

Given a 0-dimensional scheme $\mathbb{X}$ in the projective $n$-space $\mathbb{P}^n_K$ over a field $K$, we are interested in studying the K\"ahler different of $\mathbb{X}$ and its applications. Using the K\"ahler different, we characterize the generic position and Cayley-Bacharach properties of $\mathbb{X}$ in several certain cases. When $\mathbb{X}$ is in generic position, we prove a generalized version of the Ap\'{e}ry-Gorenstein-Samuel theorem about arithmetically Gorenstein schemes. We study the anisotropy theorem for Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial homology spheres in characteristic 2 by Papadakis and Petrotou. This theorem implies the Hard Lefschetz theorem as well as McMullen's g-conjecture for such spheres. Our first result is an explicit description of the quadratic form. We use this description to prove a conjecture stated by Papadakis and Petrotou. All anisotropy theorems for homology spheres and pseudo-manifolds in characteristic 2 follow from this conjecture. Using a specialization argument, we prove anisotropy for certain homology spheres over the field $\mathbb{Q}$. An ideal in a polynomial ring encodes a system of linear partial differential equations with constant coefficients. Primary decomposition organizes the solutions to the PDE. This paper develops a novel structure theory for primary ideals in a polynomial ring. We characterize primary ideals in terms of PDE, punctual Hilbert schemes, relative Weyl algebras, and the join construction. Solving the PDE described by a primary ideal amounts to computing Noetherian operators in the sense of Ehrenpreis and Palamodov. Musta\c{t}\u{a} defined Bernstein-Sato polynomials in prime characteristic for principal ideals and proved that the roots of these polynomials are related to the $F$-jumping numbers of the ideal. This approach was later refined by Bitoun. We use an algebraic approach to construct minimal decompositions of symmetric tensors with low rank. This is done by using Apolarity Theory and by studying minimal sets of reduced points apolar to a given symmetric tensor, namely, whose ideal is contained in the apolar ideal associated to the tensor. In particular, we focus on the structure of the Hilbert function of these ideals of points. We give a procedure which produces a minimal set of points apolar to any symmetric tensor of rank at most 5. Previously, Ohsugi and Hibi gave a combinatorial description of bipartite graphs $G$ whose toric edge ideal $I_G$ is generated by quadrics, showing that every cycle of $G$ of length at least $6$ must have a chord. This corresponds to the Green-Lazarsfeld condition $\mathbf{N}_1$. In this paper, we investigate the higher syzygies of $I_G$ and give combinatorial descriptions of the Green-Lazarsfeld conditions $\mathbf{N}_p$ of toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs for all $p \ge 1$. In particular, we show that $I_G$ is linearly presented (i.e. satisfies condition $\mathbf{N}_2$) if and only if the bipartite complement of $G$ is a tree of diameter at most $3$. In the present article, we investigate the following deformation problem. Let $(R,\mathfrak m)$ be a local (graded local) Noetherian ring with a (homogeneous) regular element $y \in \mathfrak m$ and assume that $R/yR$ is quasi-Gorenstein. Then is $R$ quasi-Gorenstein? We give positive answers to this problem under various assumptions, while we present a counter-example in general. Star configurations of points are configurations with known (and conjectured) extremal behaviors among all configurations of points in $\mathbb P_k^n$; additional interest come from their rich structure, which allows them to be studied using tools from algebraic geometry, combinatorics, commutative algebra and representation theory. In the present paper we investigate the more general problem of determining the structure of symbolic powers of a wide generalization of star configurations of points (introduced by Geramita, Harbourne, Migliore and Nagel) called star configurations of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb P_k^n$. Here (1) we provide explicit minimal generating sets of the symbolic powers $I^{(m)}$ of these ideals $I$, (2) we introduce a notion of $\delta$-c.i. quotients, which generalize ideals with linear quotients, and show that $I^{(m)}$ have $\delta$-c.i. quotients, (3) we show that the shape of the Betti tables of these symbolic powers is determined by certain "Koszul" strands and we prove that a little bit more than the bottom half of the Betti table has a regular, almost hypnotic, pattern, and (4) we provide a closed formula for all the graded Betti numbers in these strands. As a special case of (2) we deduce that symbolic powers of ideals of star configurations of points have linear quotients. We also improve and extend results by Galetto, Geramita, Shin and Van Tuyl, and provide explicit new general formulas for the minimal number of generators and the symbolic defects of star configurations. Finally, inspired by Young tableaux, we introduce a technical tool which may be of independent interest: it is a "canonical" way of writing any monomial in any given set of polynomials. We compute the finite generation ideal for Daigle and Freudenburg's counterexample to Hilbert's fourteenth problem. This ideal helps to understand how far the ring of invariants is from being finitely generated. Our calculations show that the finite generation ideal is the radical of an ideal generated by three infinite families of invariants. We show that these three families together with an additional invariant form a SAGBI-basis. We use the properties of our SAGBI-basis in our computation of the finite generation ideal., Comment: 22 pages

We show that any quasi-Gorenstein deformation of a $3$-dimensional quasi-Gorenstein Buchsbaum local ring with $I$-invariant $1$ admits a maximal Cohen-Macaulay module, provided it is a quotient of a Gorenstein ring. Such a class of rings includes two instances of unique factorization domains constructed by Marcel-Schenzel and by Imtiaz-Schenzel, respectively.
