The issue of Bernstein polynomials is enough far from the basic range of Kantorovich’s interests. He devoted only two papers to them in 1930 and 1931 and made a report at the First All-Union Mathematical Congress in Khar’kov in 1930.

A left canonical factorization theorem for rational matrix functions relative to the unit circle is presented. The result is a time invariant version of a recent strict LU factorization theorem for certain semi-separable operators, due to Dewilde (2012) [6]. Explicit formulas for the factors are also given. The theorem is proved, first by using the state space method of Dewilde (2012) [6], and next by using an operator theory approach. In both cases the main part of the proof concerns rational matrix functions that are unitary on the unit circle. © 2012 Royal Dutch Mathematical Society (KWG).

What are modules? In Eilenberg [3], they are basically partial deterministic automata without initial or final states. In the paper “Modules” by Bret Tilson, this is taken one level up. Bret, in his seminal work [12], showed that one needs categories to understand wreath products of monoids. Obviously one should then need transformation categories to understand wreath products of transformation monoids. So why modules? Because there are results, like the Presentation Lemma [1, 2, 7, 10, 11, 13], where one needs to look at “quotients” of transformation monoids that lose their algebraic structure. This leads one to modules and wreath products of modules. So, for Bret, a module is like an automaton where the input alphabet is a graph. Such a gadget has a transition category and the derived transformation semigroup from [3] now gets its foundations fixed by becoming a module over a graph. The algebraic viewpoint to all of this is best obtained by reading Bret’s paper. I want to give a geometric overview of what Bret has achieved so that a wider audience can appreciate what he has done. In particular, I believe this gives the best justification for Bret’s change in the definition of division of transformation semigroup from that given in Eilenberg [3] to a tighter notion. For the past decade, or more, a number of people have been looking at automata from a geometric viewpoint. Perhaps Margolis and Meakin, in the case of inverse automata [5], were the first to emphasize this approach by relating inverse automata to Stallings’ notion of graph immersions [8]. In the present paper, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the equality of the power rezidue symbols $$ {\left( {\frac{\alpha }{a}} \right)_n} $$ and $$ {\left( {\frac{\alpha }{a}} \right)_n} $$ in the cyclotomic field ℚ(ζ n ), 2 ∤ n, for a ∈ ℤ, (a, n) = 1. This result is a generalization of the classical Eisenstein reciprocity law and its continuation in a Hasse’s paper. Bibliography: 3 titles.

In his paper "On a construction of semigroups", M. Kolibiar gives a construction for a semigroup $T$ (beginning from a semigroup $S$) which is said to be derived from the semigroup $S$ by a $\theta$-construction. He asserted that every semigroup $T$ can be derived from the factor semigroup $T/\theta (T)$ by a $\theta$-construction, where $\theta (T)$ is the congruence on $T$ defined by: $(a, b)\in \theta (T)$ if and only if $xa=xb$ for all $x\in T$. Unfortunately, the paper contains some incorrect part. In Variations on a theme in paper folding, Burkard Polster [6] discusses an itera tive construction due to Hilton and Pedersen [3] for approximating any acute rational angle (rational multiple of n radians) to any desired accuracy by folding a strip of paper. Hilton and Pedersen, motivated by the construction of regular polygons and star-polygons, focus on the construction of rational angles. The construction employs a periodic sequence composed of two types of folding moves, guided by number theoretic properties of the angle's fractional representation (in fact, analysis of the construction yields new results in number theory?see [4], [1], and [2]). This note generalizes this construction to any acute angle, rational or irrational. For irrational angles, the number-theoretic prescription must obviously be replaced by something new; we show how to derive the appropriate aperiodic sequence of folding moves, via a connection between the folding construction and a simple dynamical system. Hilton and Pedersen's construction recursively generates a sequence of angles a0, otx, ... by a pair of folding operations on a strip of paper which we term Folds and Switchfolds. The angles ak appear between an edge of the strip and a crease created by folding. The Fold operation generates ak+x by bisecting ak (Figure 1)

The abstract results and applications presented in “Controllability of fractional neutral stochastic functional differential systems, Z. Angew. Math. Phys. 65 (2014), no. 5, 941–959, are not correct. Moreover, the class of differential control problems studied in [1] is not H-controllable.

Dissemination of ideas from theory to practice is a significant challenge in statistics. Quick identification of articles useful to practitioners would greatly assist in this dissemination, thereby improving science. This article uses the citation count history of articles to identify key papers from 1985 to 2002 from 12 statistics journals for applied biostatisticians. One feature requiring attention in order to appropriately rank an article’s impact is assessment of the citation accrual patterns over time. Citation counts in statistics differ dramatically from fields such as medicine. In statistics, most articles receive few citations, with 15-year-old articles from five key journals receiving a median of 13 citations compared to 66 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. However, statistics articles in the top 2%–3% continue to gain citations at a high rate past 15 years, exceeding those in JCO, whose counts slow dramatically around 8 years past publication. An error has been detected (and also corrected) in Theorem 2.8 of the paper entitled “Adjoining an Order Unit to a Matrix Ordered Space” (Positivity, (2005)9: 207–223; DOI 10.1007/s11117-003-2778-5). Accordingly, some of the results of the paper have been modified. Also, a notion of C*-matricially, Riesz normed spaces has been introduced.

This article reviews Albert Einstein's first published paper, submitted for publication in 1900. At that time, Einstein was 21 and a recent college graduate. His paper uses modeling and least squares to analyze data in support of a scientific proposition. Einstein is shown to be well trained, for his day, in using statistics as a tool in his scientific research. This paper also shows his ability to make trivial arithmetic mistakes and some clumsiness in data recording. A major aim of this article is to help provide a better appreciation of Einstein as an active user of statistical arguments in this and other of his important publications.

A new and simple proof of the main result of the paper “Laterally closed lattice homomorphisms” by Toumi and Toumi (J Math Anal Appl 324:1178–1194, 2006) is given following the paper “Extension of Riesz homomorphisms, I” by Buskes (J Aust Math Soc Ser A 39(1):107–120, 1985).

We study the problem of characterizing the effective (homogenized) properties of materials whose diffusive properties are modeled with random fields. Focusing on elliptic PDEs with stationary and ergodic random coefficient functions, we provide a gentle introduction to the mathematical theory of homogenization of random media. We also present numerical examples to elucidate the theoretical concepts and results.

On a recent paper Benchohra and Mostefai [2] presented some existence results for an integral equation of fractional order with multiple time delay in Banach spaces. In contrast to the classical case, when assumptions are expressed in terms of the strong topology, they considered another case, namely with the weak topology. It has some consequences for the proof. We present here some comments and corrections.

A record mentioned in the paper by Moree (Abh Math Sem Univ Hamburg 77:109–127, 2007) was recently improved on by Akbary and Scholten. However, the record mentioned was not the then record. The then record, due to Gallot (2004), actually slightly improves on that obtained recently by Akbary and Scholten.

We have considered the process of inscribing triangles between parallel lines in the Euclidean plane using an iterative process. It is a familiar result that the limiting triangle is equilateral. In this Note, we demonstrate that the same result holds when the geometry is hyperbolic and the lines are asymptotically parallel. We further extend the process to the sphere, where it is found that the limiting triangle is isosceles.

Recently, Alaca et al. [Alaca et al., Chaos, Solitons & Fractals 2006;29:1073–9] proved some fixed point theorems in intuitionistic fuzzy metric spaces by a strong definition of Cauchy sequence (see [George and Veeramani, Fuzzy Sets Syst 1994;64:395–9] and [Veeramani and Vasuki, Fuzzy Sets Syst 2003;135:409–13]), also the intuitionistic fuzzy metric space has extra conditions (see [Gregori et al., Chaos, Solitons & Fractals, 2006;28:902–5]). In this paper, we consider generalized intuitionistic fuzzy metric spaces i.e., L -fuzzy metric spaces and prove the fuzzy version of Banach and Edelstein contraction theorems in these spaces for modified definition of Cauchy sequence.

It is shown that an old direct argument of Erdős and Heilbronn may be elaborated to yield a result of the current inverse type.

We investigate the Chow groups of projective determinantal varieties and those of their strata of matrices of fixed rank, using Chern class computations (© 2010 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

The paper [3] contains an upper bound to the weighted density of a packing of circles on the unit sphere with radii from a given finite set. This bound is attained by many packings and has applications to problems of solidity. In the present note it is shown that a certain condition imposed on the set of admissible radii can be removed by modifying the original proof of the theorem.

We give a counter example to the comparison principle for the multipoint BVPs (by Xuxin Yang, Zhimin He, and Jianhua Shen, in Mathematical Problems in Engineering, Volume 2009, Article ID 258090, doi:10.1155/2009/258090). Then we suggest and prove a corrected version of the comparison principle.

The authors of [KMM] consider a system of two functional inequalities for a function $$f : {\mathbb{R}} \rightarrow {\mathbb{R}}$$ , and they show that, if certain arithmetical conditions and inequalities for certain parameters are fulfilled, f has to be a polynomial provided that f is continuous at some point x0. This result is derived here under the weaker condition that for some x0 the limit $${\rm lim}_{x \rightarrow x_0} f(x)$$ exists. Moreover, another system of inequalities is given leading to the same result on the nature of f. The methods used also give natural explanations for the fact that Bernoulli numbers play an important role in this context.

We generalize a result of F. Luca and A. Sankaranarayanan by proving that the set of n for which ϕ(1) + + ϕ(n) is squareful is of zero density. A similar statement holds for σ (n) instead of ϕ(n) and for some other multiplicative functions.

Many solid materials exhibit stress–induced phase transformations. Such phenomena can be modelled with the aid of the nonlinear elasticity theory with appropriate choices of the strain–energy function. It is known that if a two–phase deformation (with gradient F ) in a finite elastic body is a local energy minimizer, then given any point p of the surface of discontinuity, the piecewise–homogeneous deformation corresponding to the two values F ± ( p ) of F ( p ) is a global energy minimizer. Thus, instability of the latter state would imply instability of the former state. In this paper we investigate the stability properties of such piecewise–homogeneous deformations. More precisely, we are concerned with two joined half–spaces that correspond to two different phases of the same material. We first show how such a two–phase deformation can be constructed. Then the stability of the piecewise–homogeneous deformation is investigated with the aid of two test criteria. One is a kinetic stability criterion based on a quasi–static approach and on the growth/decay behaviour of the interface in the undeformed configuration when it is perturbed; the other, referred to as the energy criterion, is used to determine whether the deformation is a minimizer of the total energy with respect to perturbations of the interface in both the current and undeformed configurations. We clarify the differences between the two criteria, and provide a compact formula which can be used to establish the stability/instability of any two–phase piecewise–homogeneous deformations.

The concept of a metaplectic form was introduced about 40 years ago by T. Kubota. He showed how Jacobi-Legendre symbols of arbitrary order give rise to characters of arithmetic groups. Metaplectic forms are the automorphic forms with these characters. Kubota also showed how higher analogues of the classical theta functions could be constructed using Selberg's theory of Eisenstein series. Unfortunately many aspects of these generalized theta series are still unknown, for example, their Fourier coefficients. The analogues in the case of function fields over finite fields can in principle be calculated explicitly and this was done first by J. Hoffstein in the case of a rational function field. Here we shall return to his calculations and clarify a number of aspects of them, some of which are important for recent developments.

In this note, we slightly generalize Theorem 2 in the paper by M. Tunç and point out that the assumption of Theorem 3 is not sufficient. A misuse of the term 'mean' is also discussed.

Complementing the work of T.-S. Liu and A.C.M. van Rooij we show that the existence of non-zero translation invariant operators between certain function spaces on a locally compact group implies its amenability.

In our previous paper (Bull. Korean Math. Soc. 37(2000), 493-505), we claimed a theorem on a certain subset of a projective space over a finite field (Theorem 3.1). Recently, however, Professor Kato pointed out that our proof does not work if the field consists of two elements. Here we give an alternative proof of the theorem for the exceptional case.

AbsrtactStaring form a probability σ on the half-line moments of any order A. G. Pakes has defined probabilities σr, by length biasing order r and gr, by the stationary-excess operation of order r, r = 1, 2,…Examples are given to show that σ can bt determined in the Stieltjes sence while σ1 and g1 are indeterminate in the Stieltjes sence. This shows that a statement in a recent paper by Pakes does not hold.

Kurt Godel: Collected Works Volume III [Godel, 1995] contains a selection from Godel’s Nachlass; it consists of texts of lectures, notes for lectures and manuscripts of papers that for one reason or another Godel chose not to publish. I will discuss those papers in it that are concerned with the foundations/philosophy of mathematics in relation to his well-known published papers on this topic.

The idea of cutting out a curve while looking at the direction of cut of the scissors is used to explore concepts related to curves, tangents and derivatives, especially tangent line, concavity and points of inflection, curvature, and a curve as envelope of tangent lines.

It is proved that the set of those natural numbers which cannot be written as n-Ω(n) is of positive lower density. Here Ω(n) is the number of the prime power divisors of n. This is a refinement of a theorem of F. Luca.

In recent years, after a prolonged period of intense activity, the study of numerical methods for solving stiff initial-value problems for ordinary differential equations and differential algebraic equations has reached a certain maturity. There now exist some excellent codes which are both efficient and reliable for solving these particular classes of problems. In this paper, we sketch some of the main theory which underpins stiff integration methods and we use this to describe, and put into context, some of the best codes currently available. By referencing only codes which have been thoroughly tested and are widely available, our aim is to direct users of numerical software to those codes which they should try initially if faced with the problem of solving ordinary differential equations of this type. An additional feature is that the codes which we propose serve as benchmarks against which any new codes can be evaluated.

In this paper we improve Theorem 7 in [1] which deals with the existence and uniqueness of solutions of the three dimensional globally modified Navier-Stokes equations.

We verify in the rational quaternionic case a conjecture of C. Liebendorfer relating the degrees of abelian subvarieties of certain polarized abelian varieties to the (quaternionic) heights of their defining equations.

Sandor Szab6 (sszabo7@hotmail.com) was born and grew up in Hungary and graduated from E6tv6s University in Budapest. He has taught at the Technical University in Budapest, has held a variety of visiting positions, and currently is on the faculty of the University of Pecs in Hungary. His main mathematical interests are in algebra and its applications. He has written two monographs, Algebra and Tilingq with S. K. Stein, and Topics in Factorization of Abelian Groups.

We give an example of an affinoid curve without analytic continuation. We use this to produce an example of an affinoid morphism that cannot be flattened by a finite sequence of local blow-ups. Thus the global rigid analogue of Hironaka's complex analytic flattening theorem given by T. Gardener and H. Schoutens, in Theorem 2.3 of ?Flattening and subanalytic sets in rigid analytic geometry?, Proc. London Math. Soc (3) 83 (2001) 681?707, is not true. Since this is a key step in the proof of the affinoid elimination theorem (loc. cit. Theorem 3.12), that proof contains a serious gap. We also give an example of an affinoid subset of the plane that is not the image under a proper rigid analytic map of a set that is globally semianalytic in the domain of that map. This clarifies the relationship among several natural categories of rigid subanalytic sets.
