A classical result of K. L. Chung and W. Feller deals with the partial sums S k S_k arising in a fair coin-tossing game. If N n N_n is the number of “positive” terms among S 1 S_1 , S 2 S_2 , …, S n S_n then the quantity P ( N 2 n = 2 r ) P(N_{2n} = 2r) takes an elegant form. We lift the restriction on an even number of tosses and give a simple expression for P ( N 2 n + 1 = r ) P(N_{2n+1} = r) , r = 0 r = 0 , 1 1 , 2 2 , …, 2 n + 1 2n+1 . We get to this ansatz by adaptating the Feynman–Kac methodology.

Let l be a Banach sequence space with a monotone norm in which the canonical system (e_{n}) is an unconditional basis. We show that if there exists a continuous linear unbounded operator between l-K\"{o}the spaces, then there exists a continuous unbounded quasi-diagonal operator between them. Using this result, we study in terms of corresponding K\"{o}the matrices when every continuous linear operator between l-K\"{o}the spaces is bounded. As an application, we observe that the existence of an unbounded operator between l-K\"{o}the spaces, under a splitting condition, causes the existence of a common basic subspace.

Connectivity is the safety network for biodiversity conservation because connected habitats are more effective for saving the species and ecological functions. The nature of coupling for connectivity also plays an important role in the co-existence of species in cyclic-dominance. The rock-paper-scissors game is one of the paradigmatic mathematical model in evolutionary game theory to understand the mechanism of biodiversity in cyclic-dominance. In this paper, the metapopulation model for rock-paper-scissors with mutations is presented in which the total population is divided into patches and the patches form a network of complete graph. The migration among patches is allowed through simple random walk. The replicator-mutator equations are used with the migration term. When migration is allowed then the population of the patches will synchronized and attain stable state through Hopf bifurcation. Apart form this, two phases are observed when the strategies of one of the species mutate to other two species: co-existence of all the species phase and existence of one kind of species phase. The transition from one phase to another phase is taking place due to transcritical bifurcation. The dynamics of the population of species of rock, paper, scissors is studied in the environment of homogeneous and heterogeneous mutation. Numerical simulations have been performed when mutation is allowed in all the patches (homogeneous mutation) and some of the patches (heterogeneous mutation). It has been observed that when the number of patches is increased in the case of heterogeneous mutation then the population of any of the species will not extinct and all the species will co-exist.

In this note, we make two revisions of the paper [2]. The first one is the asymptotic behavior of the energy functional as $$t\rightarrow T$$ (see [2, Theorem 1.6]), where T is the blow-up time. The second one is the equivalent conditions for the solutions blowing up in finite time or existing globally (see [2, Theorem 1.8]).

In 1903, Epstein published his proof of meromorphic continuation and a functional equation for Dirichlet series associated with quadratic forms, now called Epstein zeta-functions. However, already in 1889 (or even earlier) Hurwitz was aware of these results as his mathematical diaries and some unpublished notes (in an almost final form) found in his estate at the ETH Zurich show. In this article we present and analyze Hurwitz's notes and compare his reasoning with Epstein's paper in detail.

Classic frameworks of rock-paper-scissors game have been assumed in a closed community that a density of each group is only affected by internal factors such as competition interplay among groups and reproduction itself. In real systems in ecological and social sciences, however, the survival and a change of a density of a group can be also affected by various external factors. One of common features in real population systems in ecological and social sciences is population flow that is characterized by population inflow and outflow in a group or a society, which has been usually overlooked in previous works on models of rock-paper-scissors game. In this paper, we suggest the rock-paper-scissors system by implementing population flow and investigate its effect on biodiversity. For two scenarios of either balanced or imbalanced population flow, we found that the population flow can strongly affect group diversity by exhibiting rich phenomena. In particular, while the balanced flow can only lead the persistent coexistence of all groups which accompanies a phase transition through supercritical Hopf bifurcation on different carrying simplices, the imbalanced flow strongly facilitates rich dynamics such as alternative stable survival states by exhibiting various group survival states and multistability of sole group survivals by showing not fully covered but spirally entangled basins of initial densities due to local stabilities of associated fixed points. In addition, we found that, the system can exhibit oscillatory dynamics for coexistence by relativistic interplay of population flows which can capture the robustness of the coexistence state. Applying population flow in the rock-paper-scissors system can ultimately change a community paradigm from closed to open one, and our foundation can eventually reveal that population flow can be also a significant factor on a group density which is independent to fundamental interactions among groups.

We complete a gap in the proof that exceptional polynomials are complete orthogonal systems in the associated Hilbert spaces.

In this paper author was proved the boundedness of the multidimensional Hardy type operator in weighted Lebesgue spaces with a variable exponent. As an application we prove the boundedness of certain sublinear operators on the weighted variable Lebesgue space. Note that the proof of multidimensional Hardy type operator in weighted Lebesgue spaces with a variable exponent don't contained any mistakes. But at the proving of the boundedness of certain sublinear operators on the weighted variable Lebesgue space Georgian colleagues discovered a small but significant error in this paper. This result is assigned as Theorem 5 in noted paper. In other words, sufficient conditions for general weights ensuring the validity of the two-weight strong type inequalities for some sublinear operator was found. In this theorem the inequality (9) isn't true. In this note we give the details of the correct argument. We presume that the reader is familiar with the contents and notation of our original paper. At the heart of our correction is the following Theorem which replaces Theorem 5.

In the paper (HA14), unfortunately, a computational error occurred in one estimate. Although the wrong estimate does not affect the main results, we want to present the necessary corrections. Essentially, Lemma 5.2 has to be corrected and, since it is used in the proof of Theorem 5.1, the proof of this theorem also requires an adaptation. We indicate how recent results of Grafakos and Teschl (J Fourier Anal Appl 19:167–179, 2013), and Estrada (J Fourier Anal Appl 20:301–320, 2014), relating the Fourier transform of a radial function in $$\mathbb R^n$$ and the Fourier transform of the same function in $$\mathbb R^{n+2}$$ and $$\mathbb R^{n+1}$$ , respectively, are located within known results on transplantation for Hankel transforms.

An error has been detected (and also corrected) in Theorem 2.8 of the paper entitled “Adjoining an Order Unit to a Matrix Ordered Space” (Positivity, (2005)9: 207–223; DOI 10.1007/s11117-003-2778-5). Accordingly, some of the results of the paper have been modified. Also, a notion of C*-matricially, Riesz normed spaces has been introduced.

This article reviews Albert Einstein's first published paper, submitted for publication in 1900. At that time, Einstein was 21 and a recent college graduate. His paper uses modeling and least squares to analyze data in support of a scientific proposition. Einstein is shown to be well trained, for his day, in using statistics as a tool in his scientific research. This paper also shows his ability to make trivial arithmetic mistakes and some clumsiness in data recording. A major aim of this article is to help provide a better appreciation of Einstein as an active user of statistical arguments in this and other of his important publications.

We generalize a result of F. Luca and A. Sankaranarayanan by proving that the set of n for which ϕ(1) + + ϕ(n) is squareful is of zero density. A similar statement holds for σ (n) instead of ϕ(n) and for some other multiplicative functions.

Sandor Szab6 (sszabo7@hotmail.com) was born and grew up in Hungary and graduated from E6tv6s University in Budapest. He has taught at the Technical University in Budapest, has held a variety of visiting positions, and currently is on the faculty of the University of Pecs in Hungary. His main mathematical interests are in algebra and its applications. He has written two monographs, Algebra and Tilingq with S. K. Stein, and Topics in Factorization of Abelian Groups.

We considered in Example 3.1 of the paper [1] an S-structure on R2n+s . We concluded that when s > 1 this manifold cannot be of constant φ-sectional curvature. Unfortunately this result is wrong. In fact, essentially due to a sign mistake in defining the φ-structure and a consequent transposition of the elements of the φ-basis (3.2), some of the Christoffel’s symbols were incorrect. In the present rectification, using a more slendler tecnique, we prove that our manifold is of constant φ-sectional curvature −3s and then it is η-Einstein.

I give a simple analysis of the game that I previously published in Scientific American which shows the paradoxical behavior whereby two losing games randomly combine to form a winning game. The game, modeled on a random walk, requires only two states and is described by a first-order Markov process.

This paper presents a sufficient condition for a one-dimensional Dirac operator with a potential tending to infinity at infinity to have no eigenvalues. It also provides a quick proof (and suggests variations) of a related criterion given by Evans and Harris.

Let S be a surface obtained from a plane polygon by identifying infinitely many pairs of segments along its boundary. A condition is given under which the complex structure in the interior of the polygon extends uniquely across the quotient of its boundary to make S into a closed Riemann surface. When this condition holds, a modulus of continuity is obtained for a uniformizing map on S., 36 pages, 11 figures

In this paper, it is shown that von Neumann continuous geometry may be regarded as the first attempt towards formulating a general quantum spacetime geometry akin to that of Cantorian spacetime E(∞) and noncommutative geometry.

Concerns have been voiced about the correctness of certain technical points in DiPerna’s paper (Comm. Math. Phys. 91 (1983), 1–30) related to the vacuum state. In this note, we provide clarifications. Our conclusion is that these concerns mainly arise from the statement of a lemma for constructing the viscous approximate solutions and some typos; however, the gap can be either fixed by correcting the statement of the lemma and the typos or bypassed by employing the finite difference methods. In [Di], DiPerna found a global entropy solution of the isentropic Euler equations for the following exponents in the equation of state for the pressure: γ = 1 + 2/(2m+ 1), m ≥ 2 integer. (1) He divided his arguments into the following two steps. 1. Compactness framework Assume that a sequence of approximate solutions (ρ (x, t),m (x, t)), 0 ≤ t ≤ T , satisfies: (i). There exists a constant C(T ) > 0, independent of > 0, such that 0 ≤ ρ (x, t) ≤ C, |m (x, t)/ρ (x, t)| ≤ C; (ii). For all weak entropy pairs (η, q) of the isentropic Euler equations, the measure sequence η(ρ ,m )t + q(ρ ,m )x is contained in a compact subset of H −1 loc (R× [0, T ]). If γ satisfies (1), then the sequence (ρ (x, t),m (x, t)) is compact in Lloc(R× [0, T ]). The reason for the restriction on the number γ is that, in such a case, any weak entropy function is a polynomial function of the Riemann invariants (w, z). This is the key step in DiPerna’s arguments and is also his main contribution to the compensated compactness method in this aspect. The spectral gap conjecture of M. van den Berg [2, formula (65)] asserts that λ2 − λ1 ≥ 3π for all convex euclidean domains of diameter 1, where λ1 and λ2 denote the first two eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian. Notice that equality holds for the 1-dimensional unit interval, which can be regarded also as a degenerate n-dimensional rectangular box. The gap estimate is conjectured to hold more generally for Schrodinger operators with convex potentials, under Dirichlet boundary conditions; see the work of S.-T. Yau and collaborators [9, 11]. This Schrodinger gap conjecture was proved some time ago in 1 dimension by R. Lavine [8], and more recently in all dimensions by B. Andrews and J. Clutterbuck [1]. The proof in this journal by H. Donnelly [3] of the original gap conjecture in 2 dimensions (for the Dirichlet Laplacian with zero potential) is not correct. The Editors of Mathematische Zeitschrift have asked us to describe the flaws in the proof, in order to clarify the state of the literature. Donnelly’s approach to the problem is a natural one: first perform a shape optimization to rule out a non-degenerate minimizing domain, and then analyze the spectral gap for a sequence of domains degenerating to an interval, with the help of results by D. Jerison [5]. (For some history on this approach, and on the gap conjecture more generally, see the report on the AIM meeting “Low Eigenvalues of Laplace and Schrodinger Operators” [10], especially page 12 of the open problems list.) Let E be a real Banach space. A norm-one element e in E is said to be an isometric reflection vector if there exist a maximal subspace M of E and a linear isometry F : E → E fixing the elements of M and satisfying F (e) = −e. We prove that each of the conditions (i) and (ii) below implies that E is a Hilbert space. (i) There exists a nonrare subset of the unit sphere of E consisting only of isometric reflection vectors, (ii) There is an isometric reflection vector in E, the norm of E is convex transitive, and the identity component of the group of all surjective linear isometries on E relative to the strong operator topology is not reduced to the identity operator on E.

We disagree with Bucy’s comments (Bucy 1994) on our (Udwadia &; Kalaba 1992) paper. The reasons are as follows. 1. Just as the Gibbs-Appell equations (which use quasi-coordinates) are not the same as the Lagrange equations (which use Lagrange multipliers), the equations of motion obtained by us are not the same as the Gibbs-Appell equations. Some of the steps required to obtain the Gibbs-Appell equations are (Pars 1979; Whittaker 1937): (1) choice of quasi-coordinates; (2) elimination of certain quasicoordinates in terms of other preferred quasi-coordinates; (3) setting up of the Gibbs function; and (4) differentiation of the Gibbs function with respect to the preferred quasi-coordinates. None of these steps is used in obtaining our equations of motion. 2. Yet, the equations of motion obtained by us are equivalent to the Lagrange equations with multipliers (Kalaba et al. 1995) and to the Gibbs-Appell equations (Udwadia & Kalaba 1996). By equivalent we mean each set of equations implies the other. In fact all these different sets of equations are simply different, yet equivalent, ways of stating D’Alembert’s principle for bilinear constraints. Thus what applies to one set of equations applies to the others. Any deficiency in the equations derived in our paper (say regarding rank changes of the matrix A) is therefore present in the Gibbs-Appell equations and Lagrange’s equations as well, because of their equivalence.

In this paper, we analyze the complexity of an eco-epidemiological model for phytoplankton–zooplankton system in presence of toxicity and time delay. Holling type II function response is incorporated to address the predation rate as well as toxic substance distribution in zooplankton. It is also presumed that infected phytoplankton does recover from the viral infection. In the absence of time delay, stability and Hopf-bifurcation conditions are investigated to explore the system dynamics around all the possible equilibrium points. Further, in the presence of time delay, conditions for local stability are derived around the interior equilibria and the properties of the periodic solution are obtained by applying normal form theory and central manifold arguments. Computational simulation is performed to illustrate our theoretical findings. It is explored that system dynamics is very sensitive corresponding to carrying capacity and toxin liberation rate and able to generate chaos. Further, it is observed that time delay in the viral infection process can destabilize the phytoplankton density whereas zooplankton density remains in its old state. Incorporation of time delay also gives the scenario of double Hopf-bifurcation. Some control parameters are discussed to stabilize system dynamics. The effect of time delay on (i) growth rate of susceptible phytoplankton shows the extinction and double Hopf-bifurcation in the zooplankton population, (ii) a sufficiently large value of carrying capacity stabilizes the chaotic dynamics or makes the whole system chaotic with further increment.

Månsson and Shukur (Econ Model 28:1475–1481, 2011) proposed a Poisson ridge regression estimator (PRRE) to reduce the negative effects of multicollinearity. However, a weakness of the PRRE is its relatively large bias. Therefore, as a remedy, Türkan and Özel (J Appl Stat 43:1892–1905, 2016) examined the performance of almost unbiased ridge estimators for the Poisson regression model. These estimators will not only reduce the consequences of multicollinearity but also decrease the bias of PRRE and thus perform more efficiently. The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, to derive the mean square error properties of the Modified Almost Unbiased PRRE (MAUPRRE) and Almost Unbiased PRRE (AUPRRE) and then propose new ridge estimators for MAUPRRE and AUPRRE. Secondly, to compare the performance of the MAUPRRE with the AUPRRE, PRRE and maximum likelihood estimator. Using both simulation study and real-world dataset from the Swedish football league, it is evidenced that one of the proposed, MAUPRRE ($$ \hat{k}_{q4} $$ k ^ q 4 ) performed better than the rest in the presence of high to strong (0.80–0.99) multicollinearity situation.

That Euler was quite aware of the subtleties of assigning a sum to a divergent series is amply demonstrated in his paper De seriebus divergentibus which appeared in Novi commentarii academiae scientiarum Petropolitanae 5 (1754/55), 205–237 (= Opera Omnia (1) 14, 585–617) in the year 1760. The first half of this paper contains a detailed exposition of Euler's views which should be more readily accessible to the mathematical community.The authors present here a translation from Latin of the summary and first twelve sections of Euler's paper with some explanatory comments. The remainder of the paper, treating Wallis' hypergeometric series and other technical matter, is described briefly. Appended is a short bibliography of works concerning Euler which are available to the English-speaking reader.

This paper deals with Schrodinger operators as they were treated by Kato - Ikebe [3]. It is shown that every element of the domain of definition of the adjoint of such an operator has locally square integrable distributional derivatives up to the order 2. For this the potential of the Schrodinger operator must fulfil a local Stummel condition; if the potential is only locally square integrable a somewhat weaker statement is possible for three dimensions (see remark 2 at the end of this paper).

Why do I think that Z.v.G.II was an epoch-making paper? (1) It was the paradigm for subsequent efforts to classify the possible structures for any mathematical object. Hawkins [15] documents the fact that Killing’s paper was the immediate inspiration for the work of Cartan, Molien, and Maschke on the structure of linearassociative algebras which culminated in Wedderburn’s theorems. Killing’s success was certainly an example which gave Richard Brauer the will to persist in the attempt to classify simple groups. (2) Weyl’s theory of the representation of semi-simple Lie groups would have been impossible without ideas, results, and methods originated by Killing in Z.v.G.II. Weyl’s fusion of global and local analysis laid the basis for the work of Harish-Chandra and the flowering of abstract harmonic analysis. (3) The whole industry of root systems evinced in the writings of I. Macdonald, V. Kac, R. Moody, and others started with Killing. For the latest see [21]. (4) The Weyl group and the Coxeter transformation are in Z.v.G.II. There they are realized not as orthogonal motions of Euclidean space but as permutations of the roots. In my view, this is the proper way to think of them for general Kac-Moody algebras. Further, the conditions for symmetrisability which play a key role in Kac’s book [17] are given on p. 21 of Z.v.G.II. (5) It was Killing who discovered the exceptional Lie algebra E8, which apparently is the main hope for saving Super-String Theory—not that I expect it to be saved! (6) Roughly one third of the extraordinary work of Elie Cartan was based more or less directly on Z.v.G.II.

Recently Cameron and Storvick introduced and studied an operator valued function space integral related to the Feynman integral. The main theorems of their study establish the existence of the function space integral as a weak operator limit of operators defined at the first stage by finite-dimensional integrals. This paper provides a substantial strengthening of their existence theorem giving the function space integrals as strong operator limits rather than as weak operator limits.

Let Em and En be orthogonal Euclidean spaces of dimensions m and n respectively and with the origin of each as their only common point. In a previous paper (3) I gave what was intended to be a proof of the relationwhere the dimension of A, dim A, is the Besicovitch dimension, i.e. the number s such that the Hausdorff measure in any dimension greater than s is zero whilst that in any dimension less than s is infinite, where A and B are subsets of En and Em respectively and where A × B is the Cartesian product of A with B.

Everitt has shown [1[, that for α ∊ [0, π/2] the undernoted problem (1.1–2) with an indefinite weight function r can be represented by a selfadjoint operator in a suitable Hilbert space. This result is extended to arbitrary α ∊ [0, π), replacing the Hilbert space in some cases by a Pontrjagin space with index one. The problem is also treated in the Krein space generated by the weight function r.

The aim of this short note is to improve some recent results of B. Grunbaum by some remarks. We use Grunbaum's notations.

The dynamic response of an infinite, elastic plate to a steadily moving transverse force is studied under the so-called improved plate theory. Analytic solutions for the subsonic and the intersonic cases are obtained using the method of integral transforms. The usual difficulty of the nonuniqueness of the steady-state solutions is circumvented by formulating the problems as initial value problems and then seeking the large time limits of the solutions of such initial value problems. The subsonic and intersonic solutions obtained here are similar to that obtained previously for the supersonic case. However, in contrast with the supersonic solution, which contains two families of Mach lines, the subsonic solution contains no Mach lines and the intersonic solution contains only one family of Mach lines.

The article deals with the analysis of the fractional COVID‐19 epidemic model (FCEM) with a convex incidence rate. Keeping in view the fading memory and crossover behavior found in many biological phenomena, we study the coronavirus disease by using the noninteger Caputo derivative (CD). Under the Caputo operator (CO), existence and uniqueness for the solutions of the FCEM have been analyzed using fixed point theorems. We study all the basic properties and results including local and global stability. We show the global stability of disease‐free equilibrium using the method of Castillo‐Chavez, while for disease endemic, we use the method of geometrical approach. Sensitivity analysis is carried out to highlight the most sensitive parameters corresponding to basic reproduction number. Simulations are performed via first‐order convergent numerical technique to determine how changes in parameters affect the dynamical behavior of the system.
