In this short paper, we prove a Hitchin-Thorpe type inequality for closed 4-manifolds with non-positive Yamabe invariant, and admitting long time solutions of the normalized Ricci flow equation with bounded scalar curvature.

In this short paper, we study $n$-representation-finite algebras from the viewpoint of the fractionally Calabi-Yau property. We shall show that all $n$-representation-finite algebras are twisted fractionally Calabi-Yau. We also show that for any $\ell>0$, twisted $\frac{n(\ell-1)}{\ell}$-Calabi-Yau algebras of global dimension at most $n$ are $n$-representation-finite. In this short paper, we study the existence of common universal series for uncountable families of specific linear operators. In particular we deal with some derived forms of Seleznev’s theorem and we obtain common universal elements in the space of formal power series in several complex variables.

In this short paper we prove that, for3≤N≤93 \le N \le 9, the problem−Δu=eu-\Delta u = e^uon the entire Euclidean spaceRN\mathbb {R}^Ndoes not admit any solution stable outside a compact set ofRN\mathbb {R}^N. This result is obtained without making any assumption about the boundedness of solutions. Furthermore, as a consequence of our analysis, we also prove the non-existence of finite Morse Index solutions for the considered problem. We then use our results to give some applications to bounded domain problems.

Wahl recently proved that the homology of the non-orientable mapping class group stabilizes as the genus increases. In this short paper we analyse the situation where the underlying non-orientable surfaces have marked points.

In 1985, Odoni showed that in characteristic 0 0 the Galois group of the n n -th iterate of the generic polynomial with degree d d is as large as possible. That is, he showed that this Galois group is the n n -th wreath power of the symmetric group S d S_d . We generalize this result to positive characteristic, as well as to the generic rational function. These results can be applied to prove certain density results in number theory, two of which are presented here. This work was partially completed by the late R.W.K. Odoni in an unpublished paper.

The hypersurface of Luroth quartic curves inside the projective space of plane quartics has degree 54. We give a proof of this fact along the lines outlined in a paper by Morley, published in 1919. Another proof has been given by Le Potier and Tikhomirov in 2001, in the setting of moduli spaces of vector bundles on the projective plane. Morley's proof uses the description of plane quartics as branch curves of Geiser involutions and gives new geometrical interpretations of the 36 planes associated to the Cremona hexahedral representations of a nonsingular cubic surface., Comment: Final version to appear in Michigan Math. International audience; In this short paper we prove that the almost Schur theorem, introduced by De Lellis and Topping, is true on 4-dimensional Riemannian manifolds of nonnegative scalar curvature and discuss some related problems on other dimensional manifolds.

In this short paper I consider relation between measurements, numbers and p-adic mathematical physics. p-Adic numbers are not result of measurements, but nevertheless they play significant role in description of some systems and phenomena. The purpose of this short paper is to provide a proof of a local observability criterion for invariant systems on Lie groups and coset spaces. The criterion was originally presented with an ad hoc proof based on Lie theoretic arguments. The alternative proof presented here shows that the criterion essentially comes from the classical observability results involving the observability codistribution and its properties. In this way it unifies the two approaches and extends the application field of the classical results.

We prove optimal radially weighted L-2-norm inequalities for the Fourier extension operator associated to the unit sphere in R-n. Such inequalities valid at all scales are well understood. The purpose of this short paper is to establish certain more delicate single-scale versions of these.

In this short note we show that non-negative Ricci curvature is not preserved under Ricci flow for closed manifolds of dimensions four and above, strengthening a previous result of Knopf in \cite{K} for complete non-compact manifolds of bounded curvature. This brings down to four dimensions a similar result B\"ohm and Wilking have for dimensions twelve and above, \cite{BW}. Let G be a finite, freely acting group of homeomorphisms of the odd-dimensional sphere S 2n−1 . John Oprea has proven that the Gottlieb group of S 2n−1 /G equals Z(G), the centre of G. The purpose of this short paper is to give a considerably shorter, more geometric proof of Oprea's theorem in the important case where G is a linear group

A recent note of Ih-Ching Hsu poses an unsolved problem, to wit, the general solution of the functional equation g(x1, x2) + g(φ1(x1), φ2(x2)) = g(x1, φ2(x2)) + g(φ1(x1),x2), where the φi are given functions. This short paper obtains the general solution. It gives conditions which imply that anycontinuous solution has form g1(x1) + g2(x2).

All algebras are assumed to be finite dimensional and not necessarily associative. An involution of an algebra is an algebra automorphism of order two. A quasi-division algebra is any algebra in which the non-zero elements form a quasi-group under multiplication. The purpose of this short paper is to determine the structure of all involutions of quasi-division algebras and to give an application of this result.

In a short paper recently published in these Proceedings, E. J. F. Primrose determines amongst other things a projective invariant N of a space cubic K and a linear complex L, N being of the third degree in the coefficients cik of the complex L. The purpose of the following remarks is to establish the connexion between this invariant N and the well-known projective comitants of the cubic K.
