The variability and interdependence of local porosity and local mean geodesic tortuosity, which is a measure for the sinuosity of shortest transportation paths, is investigated at the example of the microstructure in sack paper. By means of statistical image analysis, these two morphological characteristics are computed for several cutouts of 3D image data obtained by X-ray microcomputed tomography. Considering cutouts of different sizes allows us to study the influence of the sample size on the local variability of the considered characteristics. Moreover, the interdependence between local porosity and local mean geodesic tortuosity is quantified by modeling their joint distribution parametrically using Archimedean copulas. It turns out that the family of Gumbel copulas is an appropriate model type, which is formally validated by a goodness of fit test. Besides mean geodesic tortuosity, we consider further related morphological characteristics, describing the sinuosity of those shortest transportation paths, whose minimum diameter exceeds a predefined threshold. Moreover, we show that the copula approach investigated in this paper can also be used to quantify the negative correlation between local porosity and these modified versions of local mean geodesic tortuosity. Our results elucidate the impact of local porosity on various kinds of morphological characteristics, which are not experimentally accessible and which are important for local air permeance – a key property of sack paper.

We show that a relative entropy condition recently shown by Leger and Vasseur to imply uniqueness and stable $L^2$ dependence on initial data of Lax 1- or $n$-shock solutions of an $n\times n$ system of hyperbolic conservation laws with convex entropy implies Lopatinski stability in the sense of Majda. This means in particular that Leger and Vasseur's relative entropy condition represents a considerable improvement over the standard entropy condition of decreasing shock strength and increasing entropy along forward Hugoniot curves, which, in a recent example exhibited by Barker, Freist\"uhler and Zumbrun, was shown to fail to imply Lopatinski stability, even for systems with convex entropy. The physical problem is shown to be equivalent to one with periodic boundary conditions and certain symmetries. This enables a Gronwall estimate on enstrophy. That estimate is then used to bound the L 2 norm of the temperature gradient on the global attractor, which, in turn, is used to find a bounding region for the attractor in the enstrophy–palinstrophy plane. All final bounds are algebraic in the viscosity and thermal diffusivity, a significant improvement over previously established estimates. The sharpness of the bounds are tested with numerical simulations.

Two definitions for the rectifiability of hypersurfaces in Heisenberg groups $\mathbb{H}^n$ have been proposed: one based on ${\mathbb{H}}$-regular surfaces and the other on Lipschitz images of subsets of codimension-$1$ vertical subgroups. The equivalence between these notions remains an open problem. Recent partial results are due to Cole–Pauls, Bigolin–Vittone, and Antonelli–Le Donne. This paper makes progress in one direction: the metric Lipschitz rectifiability of ${\mathbb{H}}$-regular surfaces. We prove that ${\mathbb{H}}$-regular surfaces in $\mathbb{H}^{n}$ with $\alpha $-Hölder continuous horizontal normal, $\alpha> 0$, are metric bilipschitz rectifiable. This improves on the work by Antonelli–Le Donne, where the same conclusion was obtained for $C^{\infty }$-surfaces. In $\mathbb{H}^{1}$, we prove a slightly stronger result: every codimension-$1$ intrinsic Lipschitz graph with an $\epsilon $ of extra regularity in the vertical direction is metric bilipschitz rectifiable. All the proofs in the paper are based on a new general criterion for finding bilipschitz maps between “big pieces” of metric spaces.

This paper aims at producing numerical solutions of nonlinear parabolic PDEs with forcing term without any linearization. Since the linearization of nonlinear term leads to lose real features, without doing linearization, this paper focuses on capturing natural behaviour of the mechanism. Therefore we concentrate on analysis of the physical processes without losing their properties. To carry out this study, a backward differentiation formula in time and a spline method in space have been combined in leading to the discretized equation. This method leads to a very reliable alternative in solving the problem by conserving the physical properties of the nature. The efficiency of the present method are proved theoretically and illustrated by various numerical tests.

In many applications it is desirable to consider not one random vector but a number of random vectors with the joint distribution. This paper is devoted to the integral and integral transformations connected with the joint vector Gaussian probability density function. Such integral and transformations arise in the statistical decision theory, particularly, in the dual control theory based on the statistical decision theory. One of the results represented in the paper is the integral of the joint Gaussian probability density function. The other results are the total probability formula and Bayes formula formulated in terms of the joint vector Gaussian probability density function. As an example the Bayesian estimations of the coefficients of the multiple regression function are obtained. The proposed integrals can be used as table integrals in various fields of research.

The paper focuses on the analysis of the Euler projection Galerkin finite element method (FEM) for the dynamics of magnetization in ferromagnetic materials, described by the Landau–Lifshitz equation with the point-wise constraint $|{\textbf{m}}|=1$. The method is based on a simple sphere projection that projects the numerical solution onto a unit sphere at each time step, and the method has been used in many areas in the past several decades. However, error analysis for the commonly used method has not been done since the classical energy approach cannot be applied directly. In this paper we present an optimal $\textbf{L}^2$ error analysis of the backward Euler sphere projection method by using quadratic or higher order finite elements under a time step condition $\tau =O(\epsilon _0 h)$ with some small $\epsilon _0>0$. The analysis is based on more precise estimates of the extra error caused by the sphere projection in both $\textbf{L}^2$ and $\textbf{H}^1$ norms, and the classical estimate of dual norm. Numerical experiment is provided to confirm our theoretical analysis.

In this paper, we develop a new method for studying the inhomogeneous vector Riemann–Hilbert boundary value problem (which is also called the Riemann boundary value problem) in the Wiener algebra of order two. The method consists in reducing the Riemann problem to a truncated Wiener–Hopf equation (to a convolution equation on a finite interval). The idea of the method was proposed by the author in a previous work. Here the method is applied to the inhomogeneous Riemann boundary value problem and to matrix functions of a more general form. The efficiency of the method is shown in the paper: new sufficient conditions for the existence of a canonical factorization of the matrix function in the Wiener algebra of order two are obtained. In addition, it was established that for the correct solvability of the inhomogeneous vector Riemann boundary value problem, it is necessary and sufficient to prove the uniqueness of the solution to the corresponding truncated homogeneous Wiener–Hopf equation.

In this paper, we consider a version of energy minimisation technique applied to images of a 2D fluid flow. The two Navier–Stokes equations describe the static flow of a 2D fluid in terms of velocity field, (u, v), pressure field, p and forcing field, f. Apart from these two Navier–Stokes equations, we have the incompressibility condition to evaluate the three parameters. While implementing this system, random noise (usually non-Gaussian) creeps into the random force field $$\underline{f}(x,y)$$ f ̲ ( x , y ) . We denote this random field by $$\delta \underline{f}(x,y)$$ δ f ̲ ( x , y ) having zero mean and non-trivial second and third moments. We assume that these two moments are known except for some unknown parameters $$\underline{\theta }$$ θ ̲ (like mean, variance, co-variance, skewness, etc.) which we wish to estimate. In the proposed technique, we first calculate the approximate shift in the average fluid energy defined as a quadratic function of the velocity field. The energy method then requires that $$\underline{\theta }$$ θ ̲ should be such that this average increases in the energy due to the random forcing component be minimised. We should, however, note that the standard statistical approach to force field estimation is to calculate the velocity field as a function of the force field and then adopt the statistical moment matching technique. Such an approach assumes spatial ergodicity of the velocity field. This approach to force field estimation is more accurate from the statistical moment matching view point but works only if velocity measurements are made. The former technique of energy minimisation does not require any velocity measurements. Both of these techniques are discussed in this paper and MATLAB simulations presented.

In order to construct global solutions to two-dimensional (2D for short) Riemann problems for nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, it is important to study various types of wave interactions. This paper deals with two types of wave interactions for a 2D nonlinear wave system with a nonconvex equation of state: Rarefaction wave interaction and shock-rarefaction composite wave interaction. In order to construct solutions to these wave interactions, the authors consider two types of Goursat problems, including standard Goursat problem and discontinuous Goursat problem, for a 2D self-similar nonlinear wave system. Global classical solutions to these Goursat problems are obtained by the method of characteristics. The solutions constructed in the paper may be used as building blocks of solutions of 2D Riemann problems.

This paper concerns the existence of transonic shock solutions to the 2-D steady compressible Euler system in an almost flat finite nozzle ( in the sense that it is a generic small perturbation of a flat one ), under physical boundary conditions proposed by Courant-Friedrichs in \cite{CourantFriedrichs1948}, in which the receiver pressure is prescribed at the exit of the nozzle. In the resulting free boundary problem, the location of the shock-front is one of the most desirable information one would like to determine. However, the location of the normal shock-front in a flat nozzle can be anywhere in the nozzle so that it provides little information on the possible location of the shock-front when the nozzle's boundary is perturbed. So one of the key difficulties in looking for transonic shock solutions is to determine the shock-front. To this end, a free boundary problem for the linearized Euler system will be proposed, whose solution will be taken as an initial approximation for the transonic shock solution. In this paper, a sufficient condition in terms of the geometry of the nozzle and the given exit pressure is derived which yields the existence of the solutions to the proposed free boundary problem. Once an initial approximation is obtained, a further nonlinear iteration could be constructed and proved to lead to a transonic shock solution., 53 pages

In this paper we study a new problem for a parabolic-hyperbolic equation with fractional order Caputo operator in rectangular domain. There are many works devoted to study problems for the second order mixed parabolic-hyperbolic and elliptic-hyperbolic type equations in rectangular domains with two gluing conditions with respect to second argument and with boundary value conditions on all borders of the domain. In studying the unique solvability of this problem, it becomes necessary to specify an additional condition on the hyperbolic boundary of the domain. For this reason, the considering problem became unresolved in an arbitrary rectangular domain. In this paper, we were able to remove this restriction by setting three gluing conditions for the second argument.

It is well known that when the geometry and/or coefficients allow stable trapped rays, the solution operator of the Helmholtz equation (a.k.a. the resolvent of the Laplacian) grows exponentially through a sequence of real frequencies tending to infinity. In this paper we show that, even in the presence of the strongest-possible trapping, if a set of frequencies of arbitrarily small measure is excluded, the Helmholtz solution operator grows at most polynomially as the frequency tends to infinity. One significant application of this result is in the convergence analysis of several numerical methods for solving the Helmholtz equation at high frequency that are based on a polynomial-growth assumption on the solution operator (e.g. $hp$-finite elements, $hp$-boundary elements, certain multiscale methods). The result of this paper shows that this assumption holds, even in the presence of the strongest-possible trapping, for most frequencies.

The interpolating boundary element-free method (IBEFM) is a direct solution method of the meshless boundary integral equation method, which has high efficiency and accuracy. The IBEFM is developed based on the interpolating moving least-squares (IMLS) method and the boundary integral equation method. Since the shape function of the IMLS method satisfies the interpolation characteristics, the IBEFM can directly and accurately impose the essential boundary conditions, which overcomes the shortcomings of the original boundary element-free method in enforcing the essential boundary approximately. This paper will study the error estimations of the IBEFM for two-dimensional potential problems and the relationship between the errors and the influence radius and the condition number of the coefficient matrix. Two numerical examples are presented to verify the correctness of the theoretical results in this paper.

In a series of papers published since 2017 the author introduced a simple alternative of the $n$-simplex type, to enhance the accuracy of approximations of second-order boundary value problems subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions, posed on smooth curved domains. This technique is based upon trial functions consisting of piecewise polynomials defined on straight-edged triangular or tetrahedral meshes, interpolating the Dirichlet boundary conditions at points of the true boundary. In contrast, the test functions are defined by the standard degrees of freedom associated with the underlying method for polytopic domains. While the mathematical analysis of the method for Lagrange and Hermite methods for two-dimensional second- and fourth-order problems was carried out in earlier paper by the author this paper is devoted to the study of the three-dimensional case. Well-posedness, uniform stability and optimal a priori error estimates in the energy norm are proved for a tetrahedron-based Lagrange family of finite elements. Novel error estimates in the $L^2$-norm, for the class of problems considered in this work, are also proved. A series of numerical examples illustrates the potential of the new technique. In particular, its superior accuracy at equivalent cost, as compared to the isoparametric technique, is highlighted.

In this paper we establish a new critical point theorem for a class of perturbed differentiable functionals without satisfying the Palais–Smale condition. We prove the existence of at least one critical point to such functionals, provided that the perturbation is sufficiently small. The main abstract result of this paper is applied both to perturbed nonhomogeneous equations in Orlicz–Sobolev spaces and to nonlocal problems in fractional Sobolev spaces.

In this paper we consider one dimensional mean-field backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) under weak assumptions on the coefficient. Unlike [3], the generator of our mean-field BSDEs depends not only on the solution (Y, Z) but also on the law PY of Y. The first part of the paper is devoted to the existence and uniqueness of solutions in Lp, 1 < p ≤ 2, where the monotonicity conditions are satisfied. Next, we show that if the generator f is uniformly continuous in (μ, y, z), uniformly with respect to (t, ω), and if the terminal value ξ belongs to Lp(Ω, F, P) with 1 < p ≤ 2, the mean-field BSDE has a unique Lp solution.

In this paper, we study the regularity of the free boundaries of the parabolic double obstacle problem for the heat operator and fully nonlinear operator. The result in this paper are generalizations of the theory for the elliptic problem in Lee et al. (Calc Var Partial Differ Equ 58(3):104, 2019) and Lee and Park (The regularity theory for the double obstacle problem for fully nonlinear operator, , 2018) to parabolic case and also the theory for the parabolic single obstacle problem in Caffarelli et al. (J Am Math Soc 17(4):827–869, 2004) to double obstacle case. New difficulties in the theory which are generated by the characteristic of parabolic PDEs and the existence of the upper obstacle are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the thickness assumptions to have the regularity of the free boundary are carefully considered.

We study a free boundary problem for a parabolic partial differential equation in which the solution is coupled to the moving boundary through an integral constraint. The problem arises as the hydrodynamic limit of an interacting particle system involving branching Brownian motion with selection, the so-called Brownian bees model which is studied in a companion paper. The main motive of the paper is to look on rectifying and osculating curves on a smooth surface. In this paper we find the normal and geodesic curvature for a rectifying curve on a smooth surface and we also prove that geodesic curvature is invariant under the isometry of surfaces such that rectifying curves remain. We find a sufficient condition for which an osculating curve on a smooth surface remains invariant under isometry of surfaces and also we prove that the component of the position vector of an osculating curve α(s) on a smooth surface along any tangent vector to the surface at α(s) is invariant under such isometry.

In this paper, we consider the existence and multiplicity of weak solutions for a class of fractional differential equations with non-homogeneous Sturm-Liouville conditions and impulsive conditions by using the critical point theory. In addition, at the end of this paper, we also give the existence results of infinite weak solutions of fractional differential equations under homogeneous Sturm-Liouville boundary value conditions. Finally, several examples are given to illustrate our main results.

We study movements of a loaded Stewart platform in this paper. A special form of differential equations is used (motion equations in excess coordinates are derived) to compose the motion equations. In this form, vectorial Lagrange equations of the first kind are compiled using differentiation with respect to the radius-vector of the center of mass of the system and the unit vectors (orts) of the main central axes of inertia of the moving body and with respect to their derivatives. These determine the position of a rigid body in space. The length invariance of the unit vectors and their orthogonality are taken into account as abstract holonomic relations imposed on vectors describing the motion of a rigid body. “Spurious oscillations” are some of the technical effects seen in the behavior of the Stewart platform in the equilibrium position. This reason for the system to leave the unstable equilibrium position is discussed in this paper. Such standard motion of the Stewart platform as vertical oscillations of the platform will be equally unstable. The simplest mechanism of the instability of such vertical movements of the platform is revealed in this work. We propose introducing classical feedbacks to obtain steady movement. The numerical solutions of the derived differential equations completely correspond to the numerical results obtained by solving the motion equations compiled using theorems on the motion of the center of mass and on the change in the kinetic moment when the system moves relative to the center of mass.

The objective of this paper is to define one class of plane curves with arc-length parametrization. To accomplish this, we constructed a novel class of special polynomials and special functions. These functions form a basis of L2(R) space and some of their interesting properties are discussed. The developed curves are used for the linear static analysis of curved Bernoulli–Euler beam. Due to the parametrization with arc length, the exact analytical solution can be obtained. These closed-form solutions serve as the benchmark results for the development of numerical procedures. One such example is provided in this paper.

We investigate a steady planar flow of an ideal fluid in a bounded simply connected domain and focus on the vortex patch problem with prescribed vorticity strength. There are two methods to deal with the existence of solutions for this problem: the vorticity method and the stream function method. A long standing open problem is whether these two entirely different methods result in the same solution. In this paper, we will give a positive answer to this problem by studying the local uniqueness of the solutions. Another result obtained in this paper is that if the domain is convex, then the vortex patch problem has a unique solution.

Though the boundary layer formation in the chemotactic process has been observed in experiment (cf. [63] ), the mathematical study on the boundary layer solutions of chemotaxis models is just in its infant stage. Apart from the sophisticated theoretical tools involved in the analysis, how to impose/derive physical boundary conditions is a state-of-the-art in studying the boundary layer problem of chemotaxis models. This paper will proceed with a previous work [24] in one dimension to establish the convergence of boundary layer solutions of the Keller–Segel model with singular sensitivity in a two-dimensional space (half-plane) with respect to the chemical diffusion rate denoted by e ≥ 0 . Compared to the one-dimensional boundary layer problem, there are many new issues arising from multi-dimensions such as possible Prandtl type degeneracy, curl-free preservation and well-posedness of large-data solutions. In this paper, we shall derive appropriate physical boundary conditions and gradually overcome these barriers and hence establish the convergence of boundary layer solutions of the singular Keller–Segel system in the half-plane as the chemical diffusion rate vanishes. Specially speaking, we justify that the boundary layer converges to the outer layer (solution with e = 0 ) plus the inner layer as e → 0 , where both outer and inner layer profiles are precisely derived and well understood. By doing this, the structure of boundary layer solutions is clearly characterized. We hope that our results and methods can shed lights on the understanding of underlying mechanisms of the boundary layer patterns observed in the experiment for chemotaxis such as the work by Tuval et al. [63] , and open a new window in the future theoretical study of chemotaxis models.

This paper deals with the pulsating waves and entire solutions for a spatially periodic nonlocal dispersal model with a quiescent stage. By the method of super- and subsolutions together with the comparison principle, we establish the existence of pulsating waves with any speed larger than the spreading speed. The construction of the super- and subsolutions depends on the principal eigenvalue theory for a periodic eigenvalue problem with partially degenerate nonlocal dispersal. The joint results of this paper and our recent work (Wang J B, Li W T, Sun J W. Global dynamics and spreading speeds for a partially degenerate system with non-local dispersal in periodic habitats. Proc Roy Soc Edinburgh Sect A, 2018, 148: 849–880) show that the spreading speed coincides with the minimal wave speed of pulsating waves for the considered system. Moreover, combining the rightward and leftward pulsating waves with different speeds and a spatially periodic solution, we prove the existence and qualitative properties of entire solutions other than pulsating waves, which provide some new spreading ways in a heterogeneous habitat.

International audience; This article is the continuation of our first work on the determination of the cases where there is equality in Courant's Nodal Domain theorem in the case of a Robin boundary condition (with Robin parameter h). For the square, our first paper focused on the case where h is large and extended results that were obtained by Pleijel, Bérard-Helffer, for the problem with a Dirichlet boundary condition. There, we also obtained some general results about the behaviour of the nodal structure (for planar domains) under a small deformation of h, where h is positive and not close to 0. In this second paper, we extend results that were obtained by Helffer-Persson-Sundqvist for the Neumann problem to the case where h > 0 is small. MSC classification (2010): 35P99, 58J50, 58J37.

In the linear response eigenvalue problem arising from computational quantum chemistry and physics, one needs to compute a few of smallest positive eigenvalues together with the corresponding eigenvectors. For such a task, most of efficient algorithms are based on an important notion that is the so-called pair of deflating subspaces. If a pair of deflating subspaces is at hand, the computed approximated eigenvalues are partial eigenvalues of the linear response eigenvalue problem. In the case the pair of deflating subspaces is not available, only approximate one, in a recent paper [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 35(2), pp.765-782, 2014], Zhang, Xue and Li obtained the relationships between the accuracy in eigenvalue approximations and the distances from the exact deflating subspaces to their approximate ones. In this paper, we establish majorization type results for these relationships. From our majorization results, various bounds are readily available to estimate how accurate the approximate eigenvalues based on information on the approximate accuracy of a pair of approximate deflating subspaces. These results will provide theoretical foundations for assessing the relative performance of certain iterative methods in the linear response eigenvalue problem.

In this paper, we study the impact of geodesic vector fields (vector fields whose trajectories are geodesics) on the geometry of a Riemannian manifold. Since, Killing vector fields of constant lengths on a Riemannian manifold are geodesic vector fields, leads to the question of finding sufficient conditions for a geodesic vector field to be Killing. In this paper, we show that a lower bound on the Ricci curvature of the Riemannian manifold in the direction of geodesic vector field gives a sufficient condition for the geodesic vector field to be Killing. Also, we use a geodesic vector field on a 3-dimensional complete simply connected Riemannian manifold to find sufficient conditions to be isometric to a 3-sphere. We find a characterization of an Einstein manifold using a Killing vector field. Finally, it has been observed that a major source of geodesic vector fields is provided by solutions of Eikonal equations on a Riemannian manifold and we obtain a characterization of the Euclidean space using an Eikonal equation.

In this paper, we analyze involutes of pseudo-null curves in Lorentz–Minkowski 3-space. Pseudo-null curves are spacelike curves with null principal normals, and their involutes can be defined analogously as for the Euclidean curves, but they exhibit properties that cannot occur in Euclidean space. The first result of the paper is that the involutes of pseudo-null curves are null curves, more precisely, null straight lines. Furthermore, a method of reconstruction of a pseudo-null curve from a given null straight line as its involute is provided. Such a reconstruction process in Euclidean plane generates an evolute of a curve, however it cannot be applied to a straight line. In the case presented, the process is additionally affected by a choice of different null frames that every null curve allows (in this case, a null straight line). Nevertheless, we proved that for different null frames, the obtained pseudo-null curves are congruent. Examples that verify presented results are also given., MTM2017-89677-P, MINECO/ AEI/FEDER, UE.

The aim of this paper is to present another family of fractional symmetric α - η -contractions and build up some new results for such contraction in the context of ℱ -metric space. The author derives some results for Suzuki-type contractions and orbitally T -complete and orbitally continuous mappings in ℱ -metric spaces. The inspiration of this paper is to observe the solution of fractional-order differential equation with one of the boundary conditions using fixed-point technique in ℱ -metric space.

In this paper, sufficient conditions ensuring existence and multiplicity of positive solutions for a class of nonlinear singular fractional differential systems are derived with Riemann&ndash, Stieltjes coupled integral boundary value conditions in Banach Spaces. Nonlinear functions f(t,u,v) and g(t,u,v) in the considered systems are allowed to be singular at every variable. The boundary conditions here are coupled forms with Riemann&ndash, Stieltjes integrals. In order to overcome the difficulties arising from the singularity, a suitable cone is constructed through the properties of Green&rsquo, s functions associated with the systems. The main tool used in the present paper is the fixed point theorem on cone. Lastly, an example is offered to show the effectiveness of our obtained new results.

In this paper we study the geodesic flow for a particular class of Riemannian non-compact manifolds with variable pinched negative sectional curvature. For a sequence of invariant measures we are able to prove results relating the loss of mass and bounds on the measure entropies. We compute the entropy contribution of the cusps. We develop and study the corresponding thermodynamic formalism. We obtain certain regularity results for the pressure of a class of potentials. We prove that the pressure is real analytic until it undergoes a phase transition, after which it becomes constant. Our techniques are based on the one side on symbolic methods and Markov partitions and on the other on geometric techniques and approximation properties at level of groups., 34 pages, 4 figures. We re-visit the asymptotics of a binomial and a Poisson sum which arose as (average) displacement costs when moving randomly placed sensors to anchor positions. The first-order asymptotics of these sums were derived in several stages in a series of recent papers. In this paper, we give a unified approach based on the classical Laplace method with which one can also derive more terms in the asymptotic expansions. Moreover, in a special case, full asymptotic expansions can be given which even hold as identities. This will be proved by a combinatorial approach and systematic ways of computing all coefficients of these identities will be discussed as well.

We study the nonlocal stabilization problem for a hydrodynamic type equation (more precisely, the differentiated Burgers equation) with periodic boundary conditions. The method is based on results in earlier papers, where nonlocal stabilization theory was constructed for a normal semilinear equation obtained from the original differentiated Burgers equation by removing part of the nonlinear terms. In the present paper, nonlocal stabilization of the full original equation by an impulse feedback control is considered. In the future, we intend to extend the results to the 3D Helmholtz equation.

The transient interaction of a rigid convex indenter with elastic half-plane boundary is investigated in this paper. At the initial time point, the rigid indenter and half-plane have some distance between them. Indenter moves towards the half-plane on arbitrary law of motion. The indenter and half-plane interaction is considered in two stages: contactless interaction, which includes only adhesive forces, and the stage with mechanical contact between indenter and half-plane’s boundary. On the second stage, the adhesive force also takes place. In this paper the first stage of interaction is considered. To obtain the normal displacement of the half-plane, the superposition principle is used. For this method, the Lamb problem solution is considered as a Green function. However, the adhesive force function’s support is unknown. In this article the original numerical and analytical algorithm is constructed and realized, the solution for considered problem is obtained. Graphical results for half-plane boundary normal displacements space-time distribution are presented. Also graphical results for adhesive force support boundary position and velocity on time dependence are shown.

The waveguide considered coincides with a strip having two narrows of width e. An electron wave function satisfies the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation. The part of the waveguide between the narrows serves as a resonator, and conditions for the electron resonant tunneling may occur. In the paper, asymptotic formulas as e → 0 for characteristics of the resonant tunneling are used. The asymptotic results are compared with the numerical ones obtained by approximate calculation of the scattering matrix for energies in the interval between the second and third thresholds. The comparison allows us to state an interval of e, where the asymptotic and numerical approaches agree. The suggested methods can be applied to more complicated models than that considered in the paper. In particular, the same approach can be used for asymptotic and numerical analysis of the tunneling in three-dimensional quantum waveguides of variable cross-sections. Bibliography: 3 titles.

This paper studies the regularity results of classical solutions to the two-dimensional critical Oldroyd-B model in the corotational case. The critical case refers to the full Laplacian dissipation in the velocity or the full Laplacian dissipation in the non-Newtonian part of the stress tensor. Whether or not their classical solutions develop finite time singularities is a difficult problem and remains open. The object of this paper is two-fold. Firstly, we establish the global regularity result to the case when the critical case occurs in the velocity and a logarithmic dissipation occurs in the non-Newtonian part of the stress tensor. Secondly, when the critical case occurs in the non-Newtonian part of the stress tensor, we first present many interesting global a priori bounds, then establish a conditional global regularity in terms of the non-Newtonian part of the stress tensor. This criterion comes naturally from our approach to obtain a global L∞-bound for the vorticity ω.

This paper investigates a spatial non-stationary problem of motion of a Tymoshenko-type cylindrical shell subjected to external pressure distributed over some area belonging to a lateral surface. The approach to the solution is based on the Influence Function Method. There has been constructed an integral representation of the solution with a kernel in form of a spatial influence function for a cylindrical shell which is found analytically by expansion in Fourier series and Laplace and Fourier integral transformations. This paper proposes and implements an original algorithm of analytical reversion of Fourier and Laplace integral transforms based on connection of Fourier integral with an expansion in Fourier and Laplace series based on connection of Fourier integral with expansion in Fourier series at variable interval with examples of calculations.

This paper investigates regularity in Lorentz spaces for weak solutions of a class of divergence form quasi-linear parabolic equations with singular divergence-free drifts. In this class of equations, the principal terms are vector field functions that are measurable in ($x,t$)-variable, and nonlinearly dependent on both unknown solutions and their gradients. Interior, local boundary, and global regularity estimates in Lorentz spaces for gradients of weak solutions are established assuming that the solutions are in BMO space, the John–Nirenberg space. The results are even new when the drifts are identically zero, because they do not require solutions to be bounded as in the available literature. In the linear setting, the results of the paper also improve the standard Calderón–Zygmund regularity theory to the critical borderline case. When the principal term in the equation does not depend on the solution as its variable, our results recover and sharpen known available results. The approach is based on the perturbation technique introduced by Caffarelli and Peral together with a “double-scaling parameter” technique and the maximal function free approach introduced by Acerbi and Mingione.

In this paper, we investigate the spectral analysis of impulsive quadratic pencil of difference operators. We first present a boundary value problem consisting one interior impulsive point on the whole axis corresponding to the above mentioned operator. After introducing the solutions of impulsive quadratic pencil of difference equation, we obtain the asymptotic equation of the function related to the Wronskian of these solutions to be helpful for further works, then we determine resolvent operator and continuous spectrum. Finally, we provide sufficient conditions guarenteeing finiteness of eigenvalues and spectral singularities by means of uniqueness theorems of analytic functions. The main aim of this paper is demonstrating the impulsive quadratic pencil of difference operator is of finite number of eigenvalues and spectral singularities with finite multiplicities which is an uninvestigated problem proposed in the literature.

International audience; This paper studies the smoothing effect for entropy solutions of conservation laws with general nonlinear convex fluxes on $\mathbb{R}$. Beside convexity, no additional regularity is assumed on the flux. Thus, we generalize the well-known $\mathrm{BV}$ smoothing effect for $\mathrm{C}^2$ uniformly convex fluxes discovered independently by P. D. Lax and O. Oleinik, while in the present paper the flux is only locally Lipschitz. Therefore, the wave velocity can be dicontinuous and the one-sided Oleinik inequality is lost. This inequality is usually the fundamental tool to get a sharp regularizing effect for the entropy solution. We modify the wave velocity in order to get an Oleinik inequality useful for the wave front tracking algorithm. Then, we prove that the unique entropy solution belongs to a generalized $\mathrm{BV}$ space, $\mathrm{BV}^\Phi$.

This paper is a follow-up to the recent paper of Pillichshammer and Sonnleitner (2020) [12] . We show that the isotropic discrepancy of a lattice point set is at most d 2 2 ( d + 1 ) times its spectral test, thereby correcting the dependence on the dimension d and an inaccuracy in the proof of the upper bound in Theorem 2 of the mentioned paper. The major task is to bound the volume of the neighbourhood of the boundary of a convex set contained in the unit cube. Further, we characterize averages of the distance to a lattice point set in terms of the spectral test. As an application, we infer that the spectral test – and with it the isotropic discrepancy – is crucial for the suitability of the lattice point set for the approximation of Sobolev functions.

We consider the 2-d isentropic compressible Euler equations. It was shown in [E. Chiodaroli, C. De Lellis and O. Kreml, Global ill-posedness of the isentropic system of gas dynamics, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 68(7) (2015) 1157–1190] that there exist Riemann initial data as well as Lipschitz initial data for which there exist infinitely many weak solutions that fulfill an energy inequality. In this paper, we will prove that there is Riemann initial data for which there exist infinitely many weak solutions that conserve energy, i.e. they fulfill an energy equality. As in the aforementioned paper, we will also show that there even exist Lipschitz initial data with the same property.

Sampling in shift-invariant spaces is a realistic model for signals with smooth spectrum. In this paper, we consider phaseless sampling and reconstruction of real-valued signals in a high-dimensional shift-invariant space from their magnitude measurements on the whole Euclidean space and from their phaseless samples taken on a discrete set with finite sampling density. The determination of a signal in a shift-invariant space, up to a sign, by its magnitude measurements on the whole Euclidean space has been shown in the literature to be equivalent to its nonseparability. In this paper, we introduce an undirected graph associated with the signal in a shift-invariant space and use connectivity of the graph to characterize nonseparability of the signal. Under the local complement property assumption on a shift-invariant space, we find a discrete set with finite sampling density such that nonseparable signals in the shift-invariant space can be reconstructed in a stable way from their phaseless samples taken on that set. In this paper, we also propose a reconstruction algorithm which provides an approximation to the original signal when its noisy phaseless samples are available only. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed algorithm to reconstruct box spline signals from their noisy phaseless samples.
