In this work, glass-ceramics in the xBeO–20Fe2O3–(80-x)TeO2 system with x = 0–25 mol% were synthesized by the traditional melt quenching route and studied by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, confocal microscopy, infrared and Raman spectroscopy. BeO addition was found to support the crystallization process of Fe2O3 during melting, and an increased BeO content was associated with an increased fraction of the crystalline Fe2O3 phase and an increased size of these crystallites. Furthermore, samples doped with BeO exhibit an increasing polymerization of the residual tellurite glass network compared to the undoped sample. The magnetic properties and specific heat of all synthesized materials were measured, and the results show that all studied samples behave as spin-glasses. Also, the Morin transition of hematite was observed at 260 K with intensity depending on the material content in Fe2O3 crystalline phase, the formation of which correlates with the amount of added BeO.

Based on previous reports on the optical microscopy contrast of mechanically exfoliated few layer CrCl 3 transferred on 285 nm and 270 nm SiO 2 on Si(100), we focus on the experimental determination of an effective mean complex refractive index via a fitting analysis based on the Fresnel equations formalism. Accordingly, the layer and wavelength-dependent absorbance and reflectance are calculated. Layer and wavelength-dependent optical contrast curves are then evaluated demonstrating that the contrast is significantly high only around well-defined wavelength bands. This is validated a posteriori, by experimental UV-Vis absorbance data. The present study aims to show the way towards the most reliable determination of thickness of the 2D material flakes during exfoliation.

We report a successful synthesis of a ternary AlB2-type intermetallic compound. The phase purity was obtained by fine-tuning the Pd : Ge ratio out of the idealized 1 : 3. Attempts to synthesize an Er analogue were not successful. We discuss the instability of the Er analogue based on the atomic size ratio and also suggest that the increased stability of Ho2Pd1+xGe3−x in the Pd-rich range likely stems from a combination of atomic size ratio, electronic, and entropic factors. The new Ho2Pd1.3Ge2.7 compound is found to exhibit cluster glass behavior with a freezing temperature of T ≈ 2.3 K.

The present study highlights the effect of metal precursor types (SO42¯, Cl¯, and NO3¯), their concentration, and the influence of ionic strength of reaction environment on the morphology, surface, and magnetic properties of CoFe2O4 particles. The magnetic nanoparticles were obtained by chemical coprecipitation in alkaline medium at increasing metal concentration in the range of 0.0425 mol·dm-3 to 0.17 mol·dm-3 and calcination temperature from 400°C to 800°C. It was found that the chemistry of precursors can be directly correlated with magnetic properties. The CoFe2O4 particles from metal sulphate precursors showed the highest saturation magnetization and the lowest coercivity. The adjustment of ionic strength in the range of 1.25–5 M was achieved by adding an appropriate quantity of metal sulphates into aqueous solutions at a constant pH or by adding an appropriate quantity of NaClO5 under similar conditions. The average hydrodynamic size of CoFe2O4 increased from 46 nm to 54 nm with increasing metal concentration and ionic strength. An explanation of magnetic properties, caused by ionic strength and metal concentration, is given based mainly on the reduction in repulsive forces at the particle interface and compensation of the double electric layer in the presence of anions. The observed coercivity was lower for the particles obtained in solutions with the highest ionic strength, whereas the concentration of metals and calcination temperature affected the saturation magnetization and morphology of the obtained cobalt ferrite particles.

We present the crystallographic analysis, superconducting characterization and theoretical modeling of LiBi, that contains the lightest and the heaviest nonradioactive metal. The compound crystallizes in a tetragonal (CuAu-type) crystal structure with Bi square nets separated by Li planes (parameters a = 3.3636(1) Å and c = 4.2459(2) Å, c/a = 1.26). Superconducting state was studied in detail by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The results reveal that LiBi is a moderately coupled type-I superconductor (λe-p = 0.66) with Tc = 2.48 K and a thermodynamic critical field Hc(0) = 157 Oe. Theoretical studies show that bismuth square net is responsible for superconductivity in this compound, but the coupling between the Li planes and Bi planes makes a significant contribution to the superconductivity.

The Ti$_2$Ni and the related $\eta$-carbide structure are known to exhibit various intriguing physical properties. The Ti$_2$Ni structure with the cubic space group $Fd\bar{3}m$ is surprisingly complex, consisting of a unit cell with 96 metal atoms. The related $\eta$-carbide compounds correspond to a filled version of the Ti$_2$Ni structure. Here, we report on the structure and superconductivity in the $\eta$-carbide type suboxides Ti$_4$M$_2$O with M = Co, Rh, Ir. We have successfully synthesized all three compounds in single phase form. We find all three compounds to be type-II bulk superconductors with transition temperatures of $T_{\rm c}$ = 2.7, 2.8, and 5.4 K, and with normalized specific heat jumps of $\Delta C/\gamma T_{\rm c}$ = 1.65, 1.28, and 1.80 for Ti$_4$Co$_2$O, Ti$_4$Rh$_2$O, and Ti$_4$Ir$_2$O, respectively. We find that all three superconductors, exhibit high upper-critical fields. Particularly noteworthy is Ti$_4$Ir$_2$O with an upper critical field of $\mu_0 H_{\rm c2}{\rm (0)}$ =~16.06~T, which exceeds by far the weak-coupling Pauli limit of 9.86~T. The role of the void filling light atom X has so far been uncertain for the overall physical properties of these materials. Herein, we have successfully grown single crystals of Ti$_2$Co. In contrast to the metallic $\eta$-carbide type suboxides Ti$_4$M$_2$O, we find that Ti$_2$Co displays a semimetallic behavior. Hence, the octahedral void-filling oxygen plays a crucial role for the overall physical properties, even though its effect on the crystal structure is small. Our results indicate that the design of new superconductors by incorporation of electron-acceptor atoms may in the Ti$_2$Ni-type structures and other materials with crystallographic void position be a promising future approach. We report a method of growing a boron-doped diamond film by plasma-assisted chemical vapour deposition utilizing a pre-treatment of GaN substrate to give a high density of nucleation. CVD diamond was deposited on GaN substrate grown epitaxially via the molecular-beam epitaxy process. To obtain a continuous diamond film with the presence of well-developed grains, the GaN substrates are exposed to hydrogen plasma prior to deposition. The diamond/GaN heterojunction was deposited in methane ratio, chamber pressure, temperature, and microwave power at 1%, 50 Torr, 500 °C, and 1100 W, respectively. Two samples with different doping were prepared 2000 ppm and 7000 [B/C] in the gas phase. SEM and AFM analyses revealed the presence of well-developed grains with an average size of 100 nm. The epitaxial GaN substrate-induced preferential formation of (111)-facetted diamond was revealed by AFM and XRD. After the deposition process, the signal of the GaN substrate is still visible in Raman spectroscopy (showing three main GaN bands located at 565, 640 and 735 cm−1) as well as in typical XRD patterns. Analysis of the current–voltage characteristics as a function of temperature yielded activation energy equal to 93.8 meV.

Experimental and theoretical studies on superconductivity in ${\mathrm{SrIr}}_{2}$ and ${\mathrm{SrRh}}_{2}$ Laves phases are presented. The measured resistivity, heat capacity, and magnetic susceptibility confirm the superconductivity of these compounds with ${T}_{c}=6.07$ and 5.41 K, respectively. Electronic structure calculations show that the Fermi surface is mostly contributed by $5d$ ($4d$) electrons of Ir (Rh), with Sr atoms playing the role of electron donors. The effect of the spin-orbit coupling is analyzed and found to be important in both materials. Lattice dynamics and electron-phonon coupling (EPC) are studied and the strong electron-phonon interaction is found, contributed mostly by the low-frequency Ir and Rh vibrations. The enhancement of EPC, when compared to weakly coupled metallic Ir and Rh, is explained by the strong modifications in the propagation of phonons in the network of Ir (Rh) tetrahedrons, which are the building blocks of the Laves phase, and originate from the metallic fcc structures of elemental iridium and rhodium.

Polycrystalline LiGa2Ir has been prepared by a solid state reaction method. A Rietveld refinement of powder x-ray diffraction data confirms a previously reported Heusler-type crystal structure (space group Fm-3m, No. 225) with lattice parameter a = 6.0322(1) Å. The normal and superconducting state properties were studied by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity techniques. A bulk superconductivity with Tc = 2.94 K was confirmed by detailed heat capacity studies. The measurements indicate that LiGa2Ir is a weak-coupling type-II superconductor ($${\uplambda }$$ λ e–p = 0.57, $${\Delta }$$ Δ C/$${\upgamma }$$ γ Tc = 1.4). Electronic structure, lattice dynamics, and the electron–phonon interaction are studied from first principles calculations. Ir and two Ga atoms equally contribute to the Fermi surface with a minor contribution from Li. The phonon spectrum contains separated high frequency Li modes, which are seen clearly as an Einstein-like contribution in the specific heat. The calculated electron–phonon coupling constant $${\uplambda }$$ λ e–p = 0.68 confirms the electron–phonon mechanism for the superconductivity. LiGa2Ir and recently reported isoelectronic LiGa2Rh are the only two known representatives of the Heusler superconductors with the valence electron count VEC = 16.

The effect of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) addition on the crystal structure, morphology, and magnetic properties of co-precipitated hexagonal barium ferrite was investigated. For a fixed amount of surfactant, different Fe3+ concentrations and Fe3+/Ba2+ ratios were used to optimize the formation of single-phase barium ferrite particles. The results indicated that the obtained ferrite particles exhibited coercivity changes similar to those of superparamagnetic particles with larger than theoretically calculated particle sizes. This results from the softening of the material due to the size reduction of the grains and incorporation of excess barium, localized on the surface of the particles. Therefore, lowering the energy barrier required to reverse the magnetization was observed, while high magnetization saturation was preserved. The precipitation of barium ferrite particles from a surfactant-rich solution allowed control of BaFe12O19 magnetic properties without introducing any modifications inside the crystal structure.

Self-organized TiO 2 nanotubes as immobilized photocatalysts were evaluated in detail for the photocatalytic degradation of parabens mixtures from ultrapure water. This kind of approach can be a very suitable option for emerging contaminants degradation considering the possibility of the catalyst reuse and recovery which will be simpler than when catalytic powders are used. The anodization method was applied for the TiO 2 nanotubes production under different preparation voltages (20, 30 and 40 V). These preparation conditions are important on the morphological characteristics of nanotubes such as length, as well as internal and external diameters. The photocatalytic efficiency was dependent on the materials preparation voltages. The photocatalytic oxidation was evaluated using two different irradiation sources, namely UVA and sunlight. These irradiation sources were evaluated for parabens mixture degradation using different number of catalytic plates. The increase of the number of plates improved the parabens degradation possibly due to the availability of more active sites which can be relevant for the hydroxyl radical's generation. The effect of the reactor design was also evaluated using sunlight irradiation. The configuration, position and solar concentrators can be important for the performance of degradation. The mechanism of degradation was analysed through by-products formation under sunlight irradiation. The main responsible for parabens degradation was hydroxyl radical. Decarboxylation, dealkylation and hydroxylation seem to be the most important reactional steps for the mixture decontamination.

The combination of experimental and theoretical investigation of two new Pt-rich intermetallic compounds: APt8P2 (A = Ca and La) is presented, including solid-state synthesis, crystal structure determination, physical properties characterization and chemical bonding analysis. APt8P2 was obtained through the high-temperature pellet synthesis. According to both single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction results, APt8P2 crystallize in the monoclinic DyPt8P2-type structure with space group I2/m (S.G. 12). Crystal structure of APt8P2 can be considered as intercalating multiple Pt layers into APt2P2. Magnetic susceptibility measurement indicates diamagnetism of both compounds. The specific heat down to 1.8 K shows no evidence for bulk superconductivity in either CaPt8P2 and LaPt8P2. Electronic structure calculations match well with the observed structural stability and metallic behavior. The following Crystal Orbital Hamiltonian Population (-COHP) calculations suggest that the difference of Pt-Pt antibonding interaction could be the key factor that results in the shrinkage of c axis in APt8P2.

We present the synthesis and experimental characterization of the electronic properties of the cubic Laves phase superconductor CaRh2. Its crystal structure was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and its ambient temperature lattice parameter (a = 7.5326(6) A) is in good agreement with the literature. Magnetization, resistivity and heat-capacity measurements indicate that CaRh2 is a moderate-coupling type-II superconductor (λe-p = 0.89) with a transition temperature Tc = 5.13 K. A sharp discontinuity at Tc in the heat capacity shows that the normalized specific-heat jump is Δ C/γTc = 1.78, which exceeds the value predicted by weak-coupling BCS theory (1.43).

We report the experimental and theoretical investigation of structure, chemical bonding interactions, and physical properties of new ternary stannides AIrSn2 (A = Sr and Ba). AIrSn2 (A = Sr and Ba) crystallizes in the orthorhombic Re3B-type structure with the space group Cmcm (No. 64). According to single-crystal X-ray diffraction results, the structure of AIrSn2 (A = Sr and Ba) can be considered as a Zintl-type compound with heterogeneous polyanionic [IrSn2]2− and A2+. The specific heat down to 1.8 K shows no evidence for bulk superconductivity in either SrIrSn2 or BaIrSn2. Electronic structure calculations, especially chemical bonding interactions in SrIrSn2 and BaIrSn2, match well with the observed structural stability and metallic nature.

Application of Ti90RE10 alloys (RE = Ho, Er, Nd, Y, Ce, Tm) as a working electrode, instead of Ti pure foil in anodic oxidation in a fluoride-based electrolyte, resulted in formation of well-ordered nanotubes made of TiO2 and RE2O3 mixture, which could be efficiently used for pollutant removal from water and air phase upon UV and visible irradiation and easily separable from the reaction mixture to recycle. The as-prepared NTs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), luminescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized samples was investigated used phenol and toluene as a model compounds to follow degradation kinetics. The influence of the RE metals on the photoelectrochemical performance of modified TiO2 NTs was investigated. Surface morphology analysis showed formation of uniform and vertically oriented NTs structures with an open tube top and smooth walls. The results of EDX, XRD and XPS analysis proved that RE ions exist as surface compounds (RE3+ oxides). Visible light induced photoactivity (both photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical) is mostly pronounced in the presence of nanotubes obtained by anodic oxidation of Ti90Ho10 alloy. These nanotubes are able to degrade toluene in the gas phase even by irradiation of low-powered light source, such as light emitting diodes (λmax = 465 nm). Photocatalytic test of phenol degradation in the presence of scavenger indicates that photogenerated electrons and superoxide radicals play a meaningful role in the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants under visible irradiation. In addition, the photoelectrochemical tests performed under the influence of visible light irradiation confirmed that the RE-modification of TiO2 NTs caused a significant increase of photocurrent (up to 10 times higher). The new and original results on the preparation of RE2O3/TiO2 nanotubes obtained in one step anodic oxidation and photocatalytic activity in aqueous and gas phases represent an important contribution then will benefit photocatalytic surfaces preparation technologies. We show that the full-Heusler compound LiGa2Rh is a superconductor with Tc = 2.4 K. The new superconductor was found as a result of an intuition-based extension of a database search for superconductors that looked for the presence of peaks in the electronic band structure near the Fermi energy. The measurement of the entropy loss during the transition from the nonsuperconducting to the superconducting state, a straightforward measurement rarely presented in reports of “new” superconducting materials, played a critical role in identifying and isolating the superconducting compound. This study presents a particularly good example of how specific heat measurements are important for the identification and isolation of a new superconductor, since much more frequently reported resistive and magnetic susceptibility characterizations are often not enough to confirm the identification of a new superconducting material.

We report on the phase formation and the superconducting properties in the NbS$_2$ system. Specifically, we have performed a series of standardized solid-state syntheses in this system, which allow us to establish a comprehensive synthesis map for the formation of the two polytypes 2H-NbS$_2$ and 3R-NbS$_2$, respectively. We show that the identification of two polytypes by means of X-ray diffraction is not always unambiguous. Our physical property measurements on a phase-pure sample of 3R-NbS$_2$, on a phase-pure sample of 2H-NbS$_2$, and a mixed phase sample confirm earlier reports that 2H-NbS$_2$ is a bulk superconductor and that 3R-NbS$_2$ is not a superconductor above $T =$ 1.75 K. Our results clearly show that specific heat measurements, as true bulk measurements, are crucial for the identification of superconducting materials in this and related systems. Two-dimensional (2D) magnets such as chromium trihalides CrX3 (X = I, Br, Cl) represent a frontier for spintronics applications and, in particular, CrCl3 has attracted research interest due its relative stability under ambient conditions without rapid degradation, as opposed to CrI3. Herein, mechanically exfoliated CrCl3 flakes are characterized at the atomic scale and the electronic structures of pristine, oxidized, and defective monolayer CrCl3 phases are investigated employing density functional theory (DFT) calculations, scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), core level X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and valence band XPS and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). As revealed by atomically resolved transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, the CrCl3 flakes show spontaneous surface oxidation upon air exposure with an extrinsic long-range ordered oxidized O–CrCl3 structure and amorphous chromium oxide formation on the edges of the flakes. XPS proves that CrCl3 is thermally stable up to 200 °C having intrinsically Cl vacancy-defects whose concentration is tunable via thermal annealing up to 400 °C. DFT calculations, supported by experimental valence band analysis, indicate that pure monolayer (ML) CrCl3 is an insulator with a band gap of 2.6 eV, while the electronic structures of oxidized and Cl defective phases of ML CrCl3, extrinsically emerging in exfoliated CrCl3 flakes, show in-gap spin-polarized states and relevant modifications of the electronic band structures.

Novel visible light responsive materials for water splitting are essential for the efficient conversion of solar energy into hydrogen bond energy. Among other semiconductors, gadolinium orthovanadate has appropriate conduction and valence band edges positioned to split water molecules and a narrow band gap that allows the use of visible light for hydrogen generation. Thus, we present here that hydrogen evolution under visible light (λ > 420 nm) could be accomplished using hierarchical 3D GdVO4 particles, obtained by a simple, one pot hydrothermal synthesis. We found that applying various reaction components, such as EDTA-Na2 and EDTA, and adjusting the pH of the solution allow one to tune the shape of GdVO4 (such as short nanowires, long nanowires, short nanorods, long nanorods, nanoparticles and spheres – all having a tetragonal crystal structure) as well as optical and photocatalytic properties. The highest ability to photocatalytically split methanol solution into hydrogen under UV-Vis irradiation was detected for the long nanowire sample (42 μmol h−1), having almost 11 times higher efficiency in comparison with the weakest sample – short nanowires. In addition, GdVO4 spheres generated H2 more than 2 times (5.75 μmol h−1) in comparison with the short nanorod sample (2.5 μmol h−1) under visible light excitation. Photostable in three-hour work cycles, long nanowires and spheres were even able to generate hydrogen from pure water, reaching values of 17 and 3 μmol under UV-Vis and Vis light, respectively.

A series of novel ZnO quantum dots modified with rare earth metals was successfully prepared by a simple sol-gel approach. The effects of types (Eu, Er, Tb, Yb, Ho, La) and amounts (from 0.09 to 0.45 mmol) of lanthanides on the optical properties, structural characterization and photocatalytic activity of ZnO/RE QDs were systematically investigated. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy were used to characterize surface properties, while photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy and UV–Vis-driven degradation of phenol in aqueous phase were applied to understand optical and photocatalytic properties. The experiments demonstrated that generally modification of ZnO QDs by lanthanides resulted in increase of photoactivity while photoluminesce decrease at the same moment. The highest photocatalytic activity among all obtained nanomaterials and the lowest photoluminescence quantum yield among ZnO/Er photocatalysts were observed for ZnO QDs modified with 0.09 mmol of erbium. Increased photocatalytic activity has been shown in successive samples: ZnO/0.09_Er > ZnO/0.18_Eu > ZnO/0.09_La > ZnO/0.27_Er > ZnO/0.18_Tb > pristine ZnO QDs. The experimental results were supported by calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) which revealed atomic and electronic structure of Er/La modified ZnO QDs.

[EN] The cubic Ba0.5La0.5CoO3-delta was synthesized using solid state reaction. The structural properties were determined by the simultaneous refinement of Synchrotron Powder X-ray Diffraction and Neutron Powder Diffraction data. Iodometric titration was used to examine the oxygen stoichiometry and average cobalt oxidation state. Low-temperature magnetic studies show soft ferromagnetic character of fully oxidized material, with theta(P) = 198(3) K and mu(eff) = 2.11(2) mu(B). Electric measurements show the thermally activated nature of conductivity at low temperatures, whereas, due to the variable oxidation and spin state of cobalt, a single charge transport mechanism cannot be distinguished. Around room temperature, a wide transition from thermally activated conductivity to semi-metallic behavior is observed. Under the inert atmosphere, the oxygen content lowers and the cation ordering takes place, leading to coexistence of two, ordered and disordered, phases. Conversion coatings are one of the primary types of galvanic coatings used to protect steel structures against corrosion. They are created through chemical reactions between the metal surface and the environment of the phosphating. This paper investigates the impact that the addition of new metal cations to the phosphating reaction environment has on the quality of the final coating. So far, standard phosphate coatings have contained only one primary element, such as zinc in the case of zinc coatings, or two elements, such as manganese and iron in the case of manganese coatings. The structural properties have been determined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrochemical tests. New manganese coatings were produced through a reaction between the modified phosphating bath and the metal (Ba, Zn, Cd, Mo, Cu, Ce, Sr, and Ca). This change was noticeable in the structure of the produced manganese phosphate crystallites. A destructive effect of molybdenum and chromium was demonstrated. Microscopic analysis, XRD analysis and electrochemical tests suggest that the addition of new metal cations to the phosphating bath affects the corrosion resistance of the modified coating.

We show that the previously unreported ternary σ phases Nb20.4Rh5.7Ge3.9 and Nb20.4Rh5.7Si3.9 are both superconductors with Tc values of approximately 1.9 K. The superconducting transitions were characterized through temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistance, and specific heat measurements. The Sommerfeld constants, γ, for Nb20.4Rh5.7Ge3.9 and Nb20.4Rh5.7Si3.9 are 89(1) mJ mol-f.u.−1K−2 and 86(1) mJ mol-f.u.−1K−2 (about 3.0 and 2.9 mJ mol-atom−1 K−2), respectively. The normalized specific heat jumps at Tc, ΔC/γTc, are approximately 1.39 for Nb20.4Rh5.7Ge3.9 and 1.30 for Nb20.4Rh5.7Si3.9, consistent with both materials being weakly coupled BCS type superconductors.

A new neptunium intermetallic compound, NpPt 2 In 7 , has been synthesized in polycrystalline form and characterized by several macroscopic techniques. A Rietveld analysis of its powder X-ray diffraction pattern shows that NpPt 2 In 7 crystallizes in a tetragonal lattice with I 4/ mmm symmetry and lattice parameters a = 4.58471 ( 3 ) A, c = 21.5065 ( 3 ) A. Magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, Hall effect, and heat capacity measurements indicate a metallic character and the occurrence of antiferromagnetic order below a Neel temperature T N = 23 K. The transition is exceptionally robust and T N decreases by 0.2 K under a magnetic field of 9 T. A modified Curie-Weiss fit of the high-temperature magnetic susceptibility curve χ ( T ) gives an effective magnetic moment μ e f f = 2.54 μ B close to the value expected for trivalent Np. Low temperature heat capacity measurements give a reduced Sommerfeld linear coefficient close to 25 mJ mol −1 K −2 and a Debye Temperature Θ D = 181 K. First principles, correlated-band electronic structure calculations suggest that the neptunium magnetic moment in NpPt 2 In 7 is localized and that a quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic structure could result from the competition of very weak interlayer interactions leading to very anisotropic properties.

The synthesis, structure and elementary magnetic characterization of the homometallic warwickite V2OBO3 are reported. The material adopts the orthorhombic warwickite structure type at room temperature, space group Pnma (No. 62) with lattice parameters a = 9.2317(1) A, b = 3.1172(1) A, and c = 9.5313(1) A. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements show anomalies near 35 K, between 135 K and 150 K, and near 260 K, with the transition at ~ 35 K likely to a ferrimagnetic state. High resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data at temperatures between 295 K and 90 K display significant peak splitting upon cooling, indicating that at least one crystallographic symmetry change occurs at low temperatures.

Polycrystalline Pr3Ir was synthesized by arc melting. Its cementite-type crystal structure (Pnma) was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and estimated lattice parameters are in agreement with literature. Physical properties were measured by means of the ac and dc magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity. Our results indicate spin-glass behavior in Pr3Ir with a freezing temperature Tf = 6.58 K and activation energy Ea = 2.17 kBTf. Above Tf, the dc magnetic susceptibility of Pr3Ir follows a modified Curie-Weiss dependence with a paramagnetic Curie temperature θP = 3.4 K and an effective magnetic moment μeff = 3.72 (1) μB/Pr that is somewhat larger than expected for Pr+3 (μeff = 3.5 μB/Pr). Resistivity measurement shows that Pr3Ir is a poor metal with a residual resistivity ratio about 1.6. The spin-glass scenario in Pr3Ir likely originates from the dynamic fluctuations of the magnetic interactions, as it was proposed for stoichiometric, well ordered PrAu2Si2 Pr-based ternary compound.

The crystal structure and elementary properties of La15NbxGe9 are reported. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, from a crystallite with only 0.12 Nb/formula unit, reveals that this compound, although transition metal deficient, crystallizes in a hexagonal “15-1-9”-like structure type, space group P63mc (no. 186) with lattice parameters a = b = 15.5017(2) A, c = 6.9173(2) A. The physical properties were examined by specific heat and resistivity measurements. La15Nb0.4Ge9 shows metallic behavior, and no superconductivity is observed above 0.4 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient (γ = 62.41(8) mJ mol−1 K−2) and the Debye temperature ( θ D = 267(1) K) were estimated from a fit to the low temperature heat capacity data. La15Nb0.4Ge9 is the first reported compound in the ternary La-Nb-Ge system.

The large single crystals of SrSnP were prepared using Sn self-flux method. The superconductivity in the tetragonal SrSnP is observed with the critical temperature of ∼2.3 K. The results of a crystallographic analysis, superconducting characterization, and theoretical assessment of tetragonal SrSnP are presented. The SrSnP crystallizes in the CaGaN structure type with space group P4/nmm (S.G. 129, Pearson symbol tP6) according to the single-crystal X-ray diffraction characterization. A combination of magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and heat capacity measurements confirms the bulk superconductivity with Tc = 2.3(1) K in SrSnP. According to the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement, the assignments of Sr2+ and P3– are consistent with the chemical valence electron balance principles. A series of binary TiO2/SrTiO3 and ternary TiO2/SrTiO3_BiOI composites have been synthesized using multistep preparation method. Characterization of the obtained photocatalysts covered complex analysis including morphology + y (SEM), BET specific surface area, porosity, optical properties (DRS), chemical composition of surface (XPS), crystal structure and crystal size (XRD). UV–vis and Vis ligh induced photocatalytic activity was investigated in the model reaction of phenol degradation in the aqueous phase. The powder TiO2/SrTiO3_BiOI ternary composites exhibited a new photocatalytic properties and could be used in the heterogeneous photocatalysis processes. The photocatalytic activity observed in the phenol degradation reaction significantly increased under the visible light range irradiation. The best photocatalytic activity was observed for the TiO2/SrTiO3_BiOI_4 sample, about 30.2 % of phenol was decomposed after 1 h of visible light irradiation. The utilization of the nanolayered materials facilitates the separation of photocatalysts from the aqueous phase. Moreover, the composite was easily reused without the significant decrease of the photocatalytic activity in three subsequent cycles. After 5 h of Vis irradiation of the isotopically labeled (1-13C) phenol solution in the presence of the TiO2/SrTiO3_BiOI_4 composite, the salicylic, maleic, fumaric and malonic acids were detected using GC–MS equipment. The identification of degradation by-products led to clarification of phenol decomposition pathway. The role of active species during the decomposition process of organic compound was investigated using different types of active species scavengers.

Novel mono- and bimetallic nanoparticles (MNPs and BNPs) decorated surface of perovskite-type KTaO3 photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal reaction of KTaO3 followed by photodeposition of MNPs/BNPs. The effect of noble metal type (MNPs = Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru or BNPs = Au/Pt, Ag/Pd, Rh/Ru), amount of metal precursor (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 wt%) as well as photoreduction method (simultaneous (both) or subsequent (seq) deposition of two metals) on the physicochemical and photocatalytic properties of MNPs- and BNPs-KTaO3 have been investigated. All as-prepared photocatalysts were subsequently characterized by UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area and pore size distribution measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy. The crystal structure was performed using visualization for electronic and structural analysis (VESTA). The photocatalytic activity under Vis light irradiation was estimated in phenol degradation in aqueous phase and toluene removal in gas phase, while under UV–Vis light irradiation was measured amount of H2 generation from formic acid solution. The absorption properties of O2 and H2O molecules on KTaO3(1 0 0) surface supported by Au or Au/Pt NPs was also investigated using density-functional theory (DFT). The experimental results show that, both MNPs-KTaO3 and BNPs-KTaO3 exhibit greatly enhanced pollutant decomposition efficiency under Vis light irradiation and highly improved H2 production under UV–Vis light irradiation compared with pristine KTaO3. MNPs deposition on KTaO3 surface effects by disperse metal particle size ranging from 11 nm (Ru NPs) to 112 nm (Au NPs). Simultaneous addition of Au/Pt precursors results in formation of agglomerated larger metal nanoparticles (50–100 nm) on KTaO3 surface than subsequent deposition of Au/Pt with composition of concentrated smaller metal nanoparticles (>50 nm) on KTaO3 surface. The 0.5 Au/1.5 Pt-KTaO3_both and 2.0 Rh-KTaO3 reveal the highest Vis-induced activity among prepared samples in aqueous phase (14.75% of phenol decomposition after 90 min of irradiation) and gas phase (41.98% of toluene removal after 60 min of irradiation), respectively. The theoretical calculations confirmed that adsorption energy of O2 and H2O molecules was increased after loading of Au or Au/Pt NPs on KTaO3(1 0 0) surface. Control tests with scavengers show that O2 − radical is significantly involved in phenol oxidation under Vis light irradiation, which proposed mechanism is based on direct electron transfer from MNPs/BNPs to conduction band of KTaO3. The highest amount of H2 evaluation is obtained also by 0.5 Au/1.5 Pt-KTaO3_both after 240 min of UV–Vis light irradiation (76.53 µmol/min), which is eleven times higher than for pristine KTaO3 (6.69 µmol/min). Moreover, the most photocatalytic samples for each model reaction present good repeatability and stability after subsequent three cycles. Summarized, MNPs- and BNPs-KTaO3 are promising material in advanced applications of photocatalysis.

Novel rare earth-doped K2Ta2O6 (RE-K2Ta2O6) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. The effect of dopant type (RE = Y, Yb, Ho, Pr, Er) and amount of rare earth precursor (2, 4, 8 and 10 mol%) on the physicochemical and photocatalytic properties of RE-K2Ta2O6 have been investigated. All as-prepared materials were subsequently characterized by UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, mass magnetic susceptometry and photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity under UV–vis light irradiation was estimated in phenol degradation in aqueous phase, toluene removal in gas phase and H2 generation from formic acid solution. The experimental results show that, novel RE-K2Ta2O6 exhibits greatly improved degradation efficiency under UV–vis light irradiation compared with pristine K2Ta2O6. The Er-K2Ta2O6 and Pr-K2Ta2O6, obtained by introducing of 2 mol% of RE ions during synthesis, reveal the highest photocatalytic activity among prepared samples in aqueous phase (33% of phenol decomposition after 90 min of irradiation) and gas phase (45% of toluene removal after 60 min of irradiation), respectively. Moreover, both photocatalysts present good stability after subsequent three cycles. The active species trapping test shows that OH and O2 − radicals are significantly involved in phenol oxidation under UV–vis light irradiation. The amount of H2 evolution increases with increasing addition of Er dopant into K2Ta2O6 lattice. The highest H2 production is obtained for 10 mol% Er-K2Ta2O6 after 240 min of UV–vis light irradiation (15.40 μmol/min). Enhanced photoactivity performance can be attributed to incorporation of RE ions at K+ lattice site in RE-K2Ta2O6, probably leading to formation of new RE 4f states below the conduction band of K2Ta2O6 structure. To investigate the localization of RE ions in K2Ta2O6 structure, the band structure and partial density of the states (PDOS) have been investigated. Computer simulations were performed using plane-wave based Vienna ab-initio simulation package (VASP) with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) by Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE). Moreover, inclusion of RE ions in K2Ta2O6 causes predominance pyrochlore phase formation over perovskite in regular cubic structure. Summarized, RE-doped K2Ta2O6 is promising material in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants and H2 generation processes. Our work may provide valuable information for rare earth doping semiconductor with improved photocatalytic performance.

Metallization is one of the key process steps to fabricate solar cells with high performance in a cost-effective way. Majority of photovoltaic solar cell manufacturing uses thick film screen print metallization with Ag containing paste to produce solar cells. The average lifetime of PV modules can be expected to be more than 25 years. The disposal of PV systems will become a problem in view of the continually increasing production of PV modules. These can be recycled for about the same cost as their disposal. The proposed method of acidic and basic etching of contacts, presented in this article can be successfully applied to broken solar cells from the landfill without a specialist analysis procedure. The amount of silver that can be recovered from the etching solution is up to 1.6 kg/t of broken solar cells. The step-by-step procedure improves efficiency of silver recovery. The best and easiest method for general verification of the silver etching rate is classic titration with suitable concentrations of titrant solution.

A combination of theoretical calculation and the experimental synthesis to explore the new ternary compound is demonstrated in the Sr–Pt–Bi system. Because Pt–Bi is considered as a new critical charge-transfer pair for superconductivity, it inspired us to investigate the Sr–Pt–Bi system. With a thorough calculation of all the known stable/metastable compounds in the Sr–Pt–Bi system and crystal structure predictions, the thermodynamic stability of hypothetical stoichiometry, SrPtBi2, is determined. Following the high-temperature synthesis and crystallographic analysis, the first ternary bismuthide in Sr–Pt–Bi, SrPtBi2 was prepared, and the stoichiometry was confirmed experimentally. SrPtBi2 crystallizes in the space group Pnma (S.G. 62, Pearson Symbol oP48), which matches well with theoretical prediction using an adaptive genetic algorithm. One of the challenges in research into photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation of pollutants is finding the appropriate photoanode material, which has a significant impact on the process efficiency. Among all others, photoelectrodes based on an ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays are a promising material due to well-developed surface area and efficient charge separation. To increase the PEC activity of this material, the SILAR method was used to decorate Ti/TiO2 nanotubes by PbS quantum dots (QD). The ifosfamide (IF) degradation rate constants was twice as higher for PbS-Ti/TiO2 (0.0148 min 1) than for Ti/TiO2 (0.0072 min 1). Our research showed the highest efficiency of PEC degradation of drugs using IIIPbS-Ti/TiO2 made with 3 SILAR cycles (PbS QD size mainly 2–4 nm). The 4 and 6 of SILAR cycles resulted in the aggregation of PbS nanoparticles on the Ti/ TiO2 surface and decreased IF PEC degradation rate to 0.0043 and 0.0033 min 1, respectively. Research on PEC mechanism has shown that the drugs are degraded mainly by the activity of photogenerated holes and hydroxyl radicals. In addition, the identified drug intermediates made possible to propose a degradation pathways of anticancer drugs and the ecotoxicity test show no inhibition of Lemna minor growth of treated solutions.

Highly efficient and quite stable composite with core-shell-like architecture reported herein, responds to the challenge of sunlight-driven photocatalysts. The Ln(ndc)/TiO2 photocatalytic system comprises active lanthanide-carboxylate coordination networks (Nd, Er, Ho, and Tm as metal ions, and 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid as the organic linker) and inert titanium dioxide and allow to convert incompatible visible radiation into functional ultraviolet photons. The combination of the antenna-reactor photocatalyst complex with Ln(ndc) shell layers promotes light harvesting and efficient mass transfer, resulting in additional photoexcited electrons. The Nd(ndc) metal-organic frameworks successfully activate TiO2 via up-conversion energy transfer. The apparent quantum efficiency, determined at wavelengths corresponding to the transitions from the Nd3+ ground state, equals to 2.8% and 3.2% for 525 and 583 nm, respectively. Integration of the Nd(ndc) MOFs and TiO2 results in the highest efficiency of phenol degradation, affording a value of 87.5% after 60 min of visible light (λ > 420 nm) exposure.

In this study, we report a novel method of BaZrO3 and SrZrO3 surface modification by two different types of quantum dots (QDs, Cu2O and Bi2O3), which improved the photocatalytic performance of the obtained materials under UV-Vis light irradiation. Pristine BaZrO3 and SrZrO3 were prepared by the hydrothermal method. The deposition of Cu2O- and Bi2O3-QDs was carried out by chemical reduction. The morphology of the nanoparticles was estimated based on microscopic analysis (SEM, TEM). The perovskite structure and phase composition of polycrystals were confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction analysis (XRD). The elemental surface composition and the chemical character of detected elements were identified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The absorption ability and luminescence properties of nanocomposites were investigated by UV–Vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (DRS UV-Vis) and luminescence spectroscopy. The influence of Cu2O/Bi2O3-QDs modification on the photocatalytic activity of BaZrO3 and SrZrO3 was evaluated by the phenol photodegradation process in the liquid phase under UV-Vis and toluene degradation in the gas phase under Vis irradiation. The highest photoactivity under UV-Vis light was observed for BaZrO3/1% Cu2O/33% Bi2O3 and SrZrO3/1% Cu2O/33% Bi2O3 samples. Research also demonstrated that single-type QD deposition (Cu2O or Bi2O3) on the zirconate surface decreases the photoactivity in comparison with pristine zirconates. The mechanism of photocatalytic activity of the obtained nanocomposites was investigated by the formation of hydroxyl radicals under UV-Vis irradiation in the presence of terephthalic acid.

A heterojunction with excellent visible light response and stability based on titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO2 NTs), bismuth sulfide quantum dots (Bi2S3 QDs), and platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) is proposed. Both Pt NPs (3.0 ± 0.2 nm) and Bi2S3 QDs (3.50 ± 0.20 nm) are well distributed on the (i) top parts, (ii) inner walls, and (iii) outer walls of the TiO2 NTs. Visible-light-induced photoreaction was initialized by excitation of narrow band gap Bi2S3 QDs, followed by electron injection to the conduction band of TiO2, while Pt NPs acted as electron traps, enhacing O2–• generation. Phenol in the aqueous phase and toluene in the gas phase were efficiently degraded over Bi2S3–Pt NTs, even for wavelengths longer than 455 and 465 nm, respectively, while no degradation of model compounds was observed over pristine TiO2 NTs under the same irradiation conditions. In the present study treatability of persistent organic compounds from the flow back water after hydrauling fracturing was investigated. The combination of TiO2 photocatalyst and magnetic oxide nanoparticles enhance the separation and recoverable property of nanosized TiO2 photocatalyst. Fe3O4/TiO2 and Fe3O4@SiO2/TiO2 nanocomposites were prepared by heteroagglomeration. The photocatalysts' characteristics by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) showed that sample with the mass ratio of Fe3O4 to TiO2 equal 1:4 and molar ratio of TEOS:Fe3O4 = 8:1 and NH4OH:TEOS = 16:1 obtained by deposition TiO2 P25 (Evonik) on magnetite core had about 124 m2 g-1 specific surface area and superparamagnetic properties. The prepared composites contained TiO2 and Fe3O4 crystal phases. The photocatalytic activity was estimated by measuring the decomposition rate of three model pollutants identified in the flow back water from one of the Baltic Shale Basin. Regarding flow back water treatment after shale gas exploration, the progress of photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds was measured by chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration. The Fe3O4@SiO2/TiO2_P25 composite nanoparticles were recovered and re-used without significant reduction of efficiency.

Polycrystalline samples of HoT2Al20 (T = Ti, V, Cr) intermetallics were synthesized using a step-wise arc-melting technique. All three compounds adopt the CeCr2Al20-type crystal structure with Ho atoms positioned inside oversized icosahedral cages formed by Al atoms. The structure of HoV2Al20 compound is reported. The materials properties were studied by means of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. All three compounds show a Curie-Weiss paramagnetic behavior down to 1.95 K. Specific heat measurements show the presence of electronic Schottky anomaly resulting from crystal-field splitting of Ho3+ energy levels in the three compounds, while in HoTi2Al20 and HoV2Al20 a second anomaly was observed, resulting from the presence of low-energy Einstein phonon mode.

A series of Er-, Yb-, Ho-, Tb-, Gd-, Pr-TiO 2 nanotubes (RE-NTs) was prepared via an electrochemical method. The as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis absorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and luminescent spectroscopy. The experiments demonstrated that toluene in the gas phase was successfully degraded under visible light (LEDs λ max = 465 nm) using RE-NTs. In the presence of the most active sample (Ho-NTs), the photodegradation of toluene reached 30% after 60 min of vis irradiation. To investigate the localization of RE in the TiO 2 structure, computer simulations were performed using the plane-wave-based Vienna ab-initio simulation package (VASP) implementing spin-polarized density-functional theory (DFT) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). It is proposed that during the electrochemical process, TiO 2 systems with new Ho-f states below the conduction band of TiO 2 is formed. The photocatalytic activity under Vis irradiation is attributable not to OH but to other forms of reactive oxygen species (O 2 − , HO 2 , H 2 O 2 ).

2H-NbSe2 is the prototype and most frequently studied of the well-known transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) superconductors. As 2H-NbSe2 is widely acknowledged as a conventional superconductor, its transition temperature to the superconducting state (Tc) is 7.3 K, a Tc that is substantially higher than those seen for the majority of TMDCs, where Tc values between 2 and 4 K are the norm. Here we report the intercalation of Cu into 2H-NbSe2 to make CuxNbSe2. As is typically found when chemically altering an optimal superconductor, Tc decreases with an increase in x, but the way that Tc is suppressed in this case is unusual: an S-shaped character is observed, with an inflection point near x = 0.03 and, at higher x values, a leveling off of the Tc near 3 K, down to the usual value for a layered TMDC. Electronic characterization reveals corresponding S-like behavior for many of the parameters of the materials that influence Tc. Well-organized TiO2 nanotube arrays were fabricated via one-step anodization process. The as-prepared TiO2 nanotubes were characterized by X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Photocatalytic activity of obtained photocatalyst was studied in reaction of toluene degradation in the gas phase using low powered and low cost light-emitting diodes (UV LEDs) as an irradiation source. The effect of irradiation intensity and initial pollutant concentration on gas phase photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes was analyzed. Obtained TiO2 nanotubes were smooth and vertically oriented with a length of about 1.7 ± 0.05 μm. The inner diameter and the wall thickness were 65 ± 2 nm and 6 ± 0.4 nm, respectively. The results showed that the initial toluene degradation rate increased (from 0.0062 up to 0.0567 μmol/min) with raising initial toluene concentration (50–400 ppm), while too high dose of irradiation (about 50 mW/cm2) reduced photocatalytic toluene degradation rate. The best stability of TiO2 nanotubes in three subsequent irradiation cycles was observed for irradiation intensity of 38 mW/cm2. Moreover, it was found that photocatalytic toluene degradation over TiO2 nanotubes showed first order kinetic behavior.

Novel CdTe-KTaO 3 composite photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by using thioglycolic acid (TGA) or 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) as linker molecules which facilitated attachment of CdTe quantum dots to the surface of KTaO 3 nanocubes. The as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized by UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) specific surface area, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy. The obtained CdTe-decorated KTaO 3 composites showed greatly improved photocatalytic performance for degradation of toluene in the gas phase under LEDs light irradiation (λ max = 415 nm) over pristine KTaO 3 . TGA-functionalized CdTe-KTaO 3 composites exhibited higher photocatalytic activity as compared with MPA-capped CdTe-KTaO 3 hybrids which can be ascribed to the shorter chain length of TGA molecule as compared with MPA linker and therefore faster electron transfer from TGA-CdTe nanodots to perovskite-type potassium tantalate. The significance of quantum size effect of CdTe QDs for enhancing photocatalytic performance of CdTeQDs-decorated KTaO 3 was also discussed.

The development of a photocatalyst with remarkable activity to degrade pollutants in aqueous and gas phase requires visible light-responsive stable materials, easily organized in the form of a thin layer (to exclude the highly expensive separation step). In this work, we present a one-step strategy for synthesizing material in the form of a self-organized TiO2/Ag2O nanotube (NT) array interlaced with silver nanoparticles (as in a cake with raisins) that exhibited photoactivity significantly enhanced compared to that of pristine TiO2 NTs under both ultraviolet (UV) and visible (vis) irradiation. An NT array composed of a mixture of TiO2 and Ag2O and spiked with Ag nanoparticles was formed via the anodization of a Ti–Ag alloy in a one-step reaction. Silver NPs have been formed during the in situ generation of Ag ions and were (i) embedded in the NT walls, (ii) stuck on the external NT walls, and (iii) placed inside the NTs. The indium-rich intermetallic compound LaPdIn 4 is reported, prepared by arc-melting and annealing at 600 °C. Single crystal X-ray diffraction found the material to be orthorhombic, space group Cmcm (No. 63), with lattice parameters a = 4.5462(3) A, b = 16.9208(10) A, and c = 7.3100(5) A. This previously unreported indide is isostructural with LaNiIn 4 and LaPtIn 4 . It is demonstrated that all three compounds in the La T In 4 ( T = Ni, Pd, Pt) family display metallic behavior with resistivity values between 20 and 30 μΩ-cm at 250 K. In addition, temperature and field-dependent magnetization measurements between 2 and 250 K show all to be weak paramagnets or diamagnets, with very small amounts of spin-bearing impurities present. The field-dependent magnetization showed evidence of de Haas-van Alphen quantum oscillations in the Pd and Pt containing compounds near applied fields of 5 T.

After the recent finding that CrI3, displays ferromagnetic order down to its monolayer, extensive studies have followed to pursue new two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials. In this article, we report on the growth of single crystal CrCl3 in the layered monoclinic phase. The system after mechanical exfoliation exhibits stability in ambient air (the degradation occurs on a time scale at least four orders of magnitude longer than is observed for CrI3). By means of mechanical cleavage and atomic force microscopy (AFM) combined with optical identification, we demonstrate the systematic isolation of single and few layer flakes onto 270 nm and 285 nm SiO2/Si (100) substrates with lateral size larger than graphene flakes isolated with the same method. The layer number identification has been carried with statistically significant data, quantifying the optical contrast as a function of the number of layers for up to six layers. Layer dependent optical contrast data have been fitted within the Fresnel equation formalism determining the real and imaginary part of the wavelength dependent refractive index of the material. A layer dependent (532 nm) micro-Raman study has been carried out down to two layers with no detectable spectral shifts as a function of the layer number and with respect to the bulk.
