Amorphous silicon (a-Si) in the form of various nanoscale architectures (nanoparticles, nanoflakes, nanorods, nanowires, hollow nanotubes, and thin films) is a promising alternative anode to traditional carbon with considerable potential for high capacity lithium-ion batteries. However, silicon-based systems suffer from colossal volume expansion-related stresses leading to electrode decrepitation causing rapid capacity fade, and consequently, poor cycling performance. Loss of mechanical integrity of the anode due to lithium alloying-induced stresses is the primary reason for this capacity fade. We hypothesized that disintegration of the a-Si thin film occurs due to the mechanical constraints against lithium intercalation/alloying-induced volume expansion imposed by the current collector, and alteration of this mechanical constraint using an intervening soft layer will considerably improve the stability of the anode system. To test this hypothesis, we utilized an innovative custom-developed multiphysics finite element framework to model the anode system. Our simulations revealed that modulus mismatch between the silicon thin film and the elastic layer sandwich between this layer and the current collector is a key design parameter critical for improving the mechanical integrity of the silicon thin film. We also determined that the adhesion between the different anode components is important in prolonging the anode life.

Biomechanical failure of the artery wall can lead to rupture, a catastrophic event with a high rate of mortality. Thus, there is a pressing need to understand failure behavior of the arterial wall. Uniaxial testing remains the most common experimental technique to assess tissue failure properties. However, the relationship between intrinsic failure parameters of the tissue and measured uniaxial failure properties is not fully established. Furthermore, the effect of the experimental variables, such as specimen shape and boundary conditions, on the measured failure properties is not well understood. We developed a finite element model capable of recapitulating pre-failure and post-failure uniaxial biomechanical response of the arterial tissue specimen. Intrinsic stiffness, strength and fracture toughness of the vessel wall tissue were used as the input material parameters to the model. Two uniaxial testing protocols were considered: a conventional setup with a rectangular specimen held at the grips by cardboard inserts, and the other used a dogbone specimen with soft foam inserts at the grips. Our computational study indicated negligible differences in the peak stress and post-peak mechanical behavior between these two testing protocols. It was also found that the tissue experienced only modest localized failure until higher levels of applied stretch beyond the peak stress. A robust cohesive model was capable of modeling the post-peak biomechanical response, which was primarily governed by tissue fracture toughness. Our results suggest that the post-peak region, in conjunction with the peak stress, must be considered to evaluate the complete biomechanical failure behavior of the soft tissue.

Right ventricular (RV) remodeling and longitudinal fiber reorientation in the setting of pulmonary hypertension (PH) affects ventricular structure and function, eventually leading to RV failure. Characterizing the kinematics of myocardial fibers helps better understanding the underlying mechanisms of fiber realignment in PH. In the current work, high-frequency ultrasound imaging and structurally-informed finite element (FE) models were employed for an exploratory evaluation of the stretch-induced kinematics of RV fibers. Image-based experimental evaluation of fiber kinematics in porcine myocardium revealed the capability of affine assumptions to effectively approximate myofiber realignment in the RV free wall. The developed imaging framework provides a noninvasive modality to quantify transmural RV myofiber kinematics in large animal models. FE modeling results demonstrated that chronic pressure overload, but not solely an acute rise in pressures, results in kinematic shift of RV fibers towards the longitudinal direction. Additionally, FE simulations suggest a potential protective role for concentric hypertrophy (increased wall thickness) against fiber reorientation, while eccentric hypertrophy (RV dilation) resulted in longitudinal fiber realignment. Our study improves the current understanding of the role of different remodeling events involved in transmural myofiber reorientation in PH. Future experimentations are warranted to test the model-generated hypotheses.

Rotator cuff tear propagation is multifactorial and may be due to localized changes in mechanical properties from tendon remodeling based on the inhomogeneous stresses experienced by a tendon with a tear. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of localized tendon remodeling on tear propagation for simulated supraspinatus tendon tears. A validated computational model of a supraspinatus tendon using subject-specific geometry and material properties with a 1 cm wide anterior tear was used. The medial edge of the supraspinatus tendon was displaced 5 mm to induce tear propagation and cohesive elements were used to model tear propagation. Four remodeling scenarios were investigated: (1) Baseline (no remodeling), (2) Positive remodeling (increased fiber stiffness) and (3) Negative remodeling (decreased fiber stiffness) at tear tips, and (4) Negative remodeling along the medial-lateral tear edge. Output parameters included the amount of tear propagation, critical load to propagate the tear, and maximum principal stress at the tear tips. Positive remodeling at the tear tips resulted in the largest amount of tear propagation (18.4 mm), highest peak maximum principal stress (25.2 MPa), and lowest critical load to propagate the tear (249N). Conversely, negative remodeling at the tear tips resulted in the least amount of tear propagation (16 mm), lowest peak maximum principal stress (17.6 MPa) and highest critical load to propagate the tear (278N). Overall, remodeling at the tear tips has the greatest effect on tear propagation. Therefore, a better method for clinicians to measure tendon stiffness at the tear tips would be helpful to improve outcome of patients.

We examine the stretching behavior of rubber-plastic composites composed of a layer of styrene-ethylene/propylene-styrene (SEPS) rubber, bonded to a layer of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) plastic. Dog-bone shaped samples of rubber, plastic, and rubber-plastic bilayers with rubber : plastic thickness ratio in the range of 1.2-9 were subjected to uniaxial tension tests. The degree of inhomogeneity of deformation was quantified by digital image correlation analysis of video recordings of these tests. In tension, the SEPS layer showed homogeneous deformation, whereas the LLDPE layer showed necking followed by stable drawing owing to its elastoplastic deformation behavior and post-yield strain hardening. Bilayer laminates showed behavior intermediate between the plastic and the rubber, with the degree of necking and drawing reducing as the rubber : plastic ratio increased. A simple model was developed in which the force in the bilayer was taken as the sum of forces in the plastic and the rubber layers measured independently. By applying a mechanical energy balance to this model, the changes in bilayer necking behavior with rubber thickness could be predicted qualitatively.

Polymeric plastics deform irreversibly (i.e., inelastically) whereas rubbers deform reversibly, i.e., elastically. Thus, uniaxially stretching a rubber-plastic bilayer composite beyond its yield point can create an elastic strain mismatch between the two layers. Upon release, the bilayer may then bend out-of-plane. We quantify the mechanics of such stretch-release-induced shape changes in rectangular specimens of rubber-plastic bilayers. We show a remarkable dependence of the final shape upon the stretch applied prior to release. At small stretch, all bilayers bend into arch or roll shapes with the plastic on the convex face. At large stretch, the bilayers bend into half-tubes with the plastic, now heavily-wrinkled, becoming the concave face. Thus, the sign and direction of the curvature both flip as applied stretch increases. Between these two extremes, saddle shapes appear which have characteristics of both arches as well as half-tubes. Sufficiently narrow samples show different behavior: they transition from arches to helices as stretch increases. All these shapes are mono-stable. We document numerous ways in which the mechanics of rubber-plastic bilayers differs from that of fully-elastic bilayers. Most importantly, yielding of the plastic layer during the shape change strongly affects the mechanics of the elastic–plastic bilayers, and yielding accompanied by plastic wrinkling has an especially large effect. A strain energy model illustrates how the shape change is dictated by the change in the ratio of elastic strain mismatch in the two directions due to the formation of wrinkles at the rubber-plastic interface.

Rotator cuff tears are a significant clinical problem previously investigated by unvalidated computational models that either use simplified geometry or isotropic elastic material properties to represent the tendon. The objective of this study was to develop an experimentally validated, finite element model of supraspinatus tendon using specimen-specific geometry and inhomogeneous material properties to predict strains in intact supraspinatus tendon at multiple abduction angles. Three-dimensional tendon surface strains were determined at 60 deg, 70 deg, and 90 deg of glenohumeral abduction for articular and bursal surfaces of supraspinatus tendon during cyclic loading (5–200 N, 50 cycles, 20 mm/min) to serve as validation data for computational model predictions. A finite element model was developed using the tendon geometry and inhomogeneous material properties to predict surface strains for loading conditions mimicking experimental loading conditions. Experimental strains were directly compared with computational model predictions to validate the model. Overall, the model successfully predicted magnitudes of strains that were within the experimental repeatability of 3% strain of experimental measures on both surfaces of the tendon. Model predictions and experiments showed the largest strains to be located on the articular surface (∼8% strain) between the middle and the anterior edge of the tendon. Importantly, the reference configuration chosen to calculate strains had a significant effect on strain calculations, and therefore, must be defined with an innovative optimization algorithm. This study establishes a rigorously validated specimen-specific (both geometry and material properties) computational model using novel surface strain measurements for the use in investigating the function of the supraspinatus tendon and to ultimately predict the propagation of supraspinatus tendon tears based on the tendon's mechanical environment.

Incorporation of collagen structural information into the study of biomechanical behavior of ascending thoracic aortic (ATA) wall tissue should provide better insight into the pathophysiology of ATA. Structurally motivated constitutive models that include fiber dispersion and recruitment can successfully capture overall mechanical response of the arterial wall tissue. However, these models cannot examine local microarchitectural features of the collagen network, such as the effect of fiber disruptions and interaction between fibrous and non-fibrous components, which may influence emergent biomechanical properties of the tissue. Motivated by this need, we developed a finite element based three-dimensional structural model of the lamellar units of the ATA media that directly incorporates the collagen fiber microarchitecture. The fiber architecture was computer generated utilizing network features, namely fiber orientation distribution, intersection density and areal concentration, obtained from image analysis of multiphoton microscopy images taken from human aneurysmal ascending thoracic aortic media specimens with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) phenotype. Our model reproduces the typical J-shaped constitutive response of the aortic wall tissue. We found that the stress state in the non-fibrous matrix was homogeneous until the collagen fibers were recruited, but became highly heterogeneous after that event. The degree of heterogeneity was dependent upon local network architecture with high stresses observed near disrupted fibers. The magnitude of non-fibrous matrix stress at higher stretch levels was negatively correlated with local fiber density. The localized stress concentrations, elucidated by this model, may be a factor in the degenerative changes in aneurysmal ATA tissue.

Heterostructures of silicon and carbon nanotubes (CNT) have been widely studied as Li-ion battery anodes. The focus of the current study is to investigate the role of silicon configurations on the mechanical integrity of the Si–CNT heterostructured anodes during electrochemical cycling. We hypothesize that void nucleation and growth in silicon during electrochemical cycling of Li can induce fracture and eventual failure. To test this hypothesis, we utilized a custom developed multiphysics finite element modeling framework considering the lithium diffusion induced elasto-plastic deformation of silicon. We systematically varied the silicon component configuration and enumerated the stress field within it for one complete electrochemical cycle. Resulting evolution of stress state reveals that reducing the mechanical constraints on Si reduces the plastic flow of the material, and thus possibility of void nucleation and growth. We find that the Si droplet configuration is mechanically stable while the continuous Si coating configuration is prone to void growth induced mechanical failure. Present analysis provides a mechanistic understanding of the effect of Si configurations in heterostructured electrodes on its mechanical integrity, which can help in design of next-generation hetersostructured electrodes with improved capacity retention.

Many plastics show necking and drawing behavior in tension, sometimes called “cold drawing”. In contrast, elastomers stretch homogeneously in tension. We examine the tensile behavior of rubber–plastic laminate composites using 3D finite element simulations and an analytical model. A rate-independent constitutive behavior was adopted in which the modulus at small-strain, strain hardening at large strain, and yield stress (only for the plastic) can all be varied independently. For sufficiently small rubber/plastic thickness ratio, layered composites show necking and drawing wherein a tensile bar coexists in two strain states, one with a large stretch (necked region) and the other with a modest stretch (unnecked region). With increasing rubber/plastic thickness ratio, the two strain states approach each other in a manner resembling a second order phase transition culminating in a critical point. Above this critical rubber/plastic thickness ratio, the layered composites stretch homogeneously. An analytical model based on adding the First Piola–Kirchoff stresses of the rubber and plastic layers, along with a modification for inelastic deformation, is shown to capture most of the results of 3D simulations accurately. We comment on the practical relevance of these results to toughening relatively brittle plastics, and more specifically, the critical importance of strain hardening of the rubber.

Although uniaxial tensile testing is commonly used to evaluate failure properties of vascular tissue, there is no established protocol for specimen shape or gripping method. Large percentages of specimens are reported to fail near the clamp and can potentially confound the studies, or, if discarded will result in sample waste. The objective of this study is to identify sample geometry and clamping conditions that can achieve consistent failure in the midregion of small arterial specimens, even for vessels from older individuals. Failure location was assessed in 17 dogbone specimens from human cerebral and sheep carotid arteries using soft inserts. For comparison with commonly used protocols, an additional 22 rectangular samples were tested using either sandpaper or foam tape inserts. Midsample failure was achieved in 94% of the dogbone specimens, while only 14% of the rectangular samples failed in the midregion, the other 86% failing close to the clamps. Additionally, we found midregion failure was more likely to be abrupt, caused by cracking or necking. In contrast, clamp failure was more likely to be gradual and included a delamination mode not seen in midregion failure. Hence, this work provides an approach that can be used to obtain consistent midspecimen failure, avoiding confounding clamp-related artifacts. Furthermore, with consistent midregion failure, studies can be designed to image the failure process in small vascular samples providing valuable quantitative information about changes to collagen and elastin structure during the failure process.

Exposure following pelvic organ prolapse repair has been observationally associated with wrinkling of the implanted mesh. The purpose of this study was to quantify the impact of variable boundary conditions on the out-of-plane deformations of mesh subjected to tensile loading. Using photogrammetry and surface curvature analyses, deformed geometries were accessed for two commercially available products. Relative to standard clamping methods, the amount of out-of-plane deformation significantly increased when point loads were introduced to simulate suture fixation in-vivo. These data support the hypothesis that regional increases in the concentration of mesh potentially enhance the host’s foreign body response, leading to exposure.

Each year, millions of Americans suffer bone fractures, often requiring internal fixation. Current devices, like plates and screws, are made with permanent metals or resorbable polymers. Permanent metals provide strength and biocompatibility, but cause long-term complications and may require removal. Resorbable polymers reduce long-term complications, but are unsuitable for many load-bearing applications. To mitigate complications, degradable magnesium (Mg) alloys are being developed for craniofacial and orthopedic applications. Their combination of strength and degradation make them ideal for bone fixation. Previously, we conducted a pilot study comparing Mg and titanium devices with a rabbit ulna fracture model. We observed Mg device degradation, with uninhibited healing. Interestingly, we observed bone formation around degrading Mg, but not titanium, devices. These results highlighted the potential for these fixation devices. To better assess their efficacy, we conducted a more thorough study assessing 99.9% Mg devices in a similar rabbit ulna fracture model. Device degradation, fracture healing, and bone formation were evaluated using microcomputed tomography, histology and biomechanical tests. We observed device degradation throughout, and calculated a corrosion rate of 0.40 ± 0.04 mm/year after 8 weeks. In addition, we observed fracture healing by 8 weeks, and maturation after 16 weeks. In accordance with our pilot study, we observed bone formation surrounding Mg devices, with complete overgrowth by 16 weeks. Bend tests revealed no difference in flexural load of healed ulnae with Mg devices compared to intact ulnae. These data suggest that Mg devices provide stabilization to facilitate healing, while degrading and stimulating new bone formation.

We examine the mechanics of three-layer composite films composed of an elastomeric layer sandwiched between two thin surface layers of plastic. Upon stretching and releasing such composite films, they develop a highly wrinkled surface texture. The mechanism for this texturing is that during stretching, the plastic layers yield and stretch irreversibly whereas the elastomer stretches reversibly. Thus upon releasing, the plastic layers buckle due to compressive stress imposed by the elastomer. Experiments are conducted using SEPS elastomer and 50 micron thick LLDPE plastic films. Stretching and releasing the composites to 2-5 times their original length induces buckles with wavelength on the order of 200 microns, and the wavelength decreases as the stretching increases. FEM simulations reveal that plastic deformation is involved at all stages during this process: (1) during stretching, the plastic layer yields in tension; (2) during recovery, the plastic layer first yields in-plane in compression and then buckles; (3) post-buckling, plastic hinges are formed at high-curvature regions. Homogeneous wrinkles are predicted only within a finite window of material properties: if the yield stress is too low, the plastic layers yield in-plane, without wrinkling, whereas if the yield stress is too high, non-homogeneous wrinkles are predicted. This approach to realizing highly wrinkled textures offers several advantages, most importantly the fact that high aspect ratio wrinkles (amplitude to wavelength ratios exceeding 0.4) can be realized.

Sputter-deposited amorphous silicon thin films on metallic copper current collectors are widely studied as lithium-ion anode systems. Electrochemical results indicate these electrodes exhibit near theoretical capacity for first few cycles; however delamination at the thin film–current collector interface causes rapid capacity fade leading to poor cycling performance. Primary reason for this interfacial delamination is the mechanical stress generated due to colossal volume expansion of silicon during lithiation. The focus of the current study is to present a mechanistic understanding of the role of mechanical properties of the current collector on this characteristic delamination behavior during electrochemical cycling. Toward this end, we have developed a computational framework that accounts for the coupled diffusion induced large deformation in silicon, elasto-plastic deformation of the current collector, as well as the nucleation and propagation of interfacial delamination. We have also performed a detailed parametric study to investigate the effect of mechanical properties of the current collector on the delamination of the thin film–current collector interface. We have accordingly determined that current collectors with low elastic modulus such as graphite can completely suppress interfacial delamination. Our analysis thus provides a sound mechanistic approach for designing next generation Si thin film anodes with improved capacity retention.

Amorphous silicon thin film deposited on copper current collector is a promising candidate for the high capacity lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode. However these systems exhibit a rapid capacity fade, and as a result, poor cyclic performance. Interfacial delamination due to lithium intercalation induced stress is the primary reason behind this capacity fade. For the case of a clean interface, crack blunting resulting from the plastic flow of the metallic substrate will eventually arrest the delamination. However, experimental observations suggest a complete delamination of the thin film from the substrate indicating the existence of interface embrittling mechanisms. Further experiments have revealed the evidence of segregation of lithium into the interfacial region that can potentially embrittle the interface. The focus of the current study is to investigate the role of such irreversible mechanisms at the interface on its delamination response during electrochemical cycling. Towards this end, we have developed a computational framework that accounts for coupled diffusion induced large deformation in silicon thin film, elasto-plastic deformation of the copper current collector, as well as the nucleation and propagation of interfacial delamination. A detailed parametric study has been presented to investigate the effect of segregation induced embrittlement on the delamination growth. Present analysis provides a mechanistic understanding of the delamination behavior of the interface between the silicon thin film and copper current collector that may help in the design of future thin film based LIB anodes with improved cyclic performance.

Large volume change and associated stress generation is known to cause failure of the silicon thin film anode used for Lithium-ion batteries after a few cycles. Experimental observations suggest that plastic deformation of the underlying Cu substrate and degradation of the active/inactive interface are the primary reasons responsible for the capacity fade. The goal of the present study is to examine the interplay between these mechanisms using a computational mechanics approach. In the present study, a novel multi-physics finite element framework has been developed to simulate the lithiation and de-lithiation induced failure of amorphous Si (a-Si) thin film on Cu foil. The numerical framework is based on the finite deformation of the active silicon wherein diffusion of lithium occurs, plastic deformation of the Cu foil, and debonding of the active/inactive interface. The effect of substrate property, interfacial energy and kinetics of interface degradation has been examined.

Silicon dioxide (thickness 350 nm and 969 nm) and silicon nitride (thickness 218 nm) films deposited on silicon substrate using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition process were investigated using a Berkovich nanoindenter. The load-depth measurements revealed that the oxide films have lower modulus and hardness compared to the silicon substrate, where as the nitride film has a higher hardness and slightly lower modulus than the substrate. To delineate the substrate effect, a phenomenological model, that captures most of the ‘continuous stiffness measurement’ data, was proposed and then extended on both sides to determine the film and substrate properties. The modulus and hardness of the oxide film were around 53 GPa and 4–8 GPa where as those of the nitride film were around 150 GPa and 19 GPa, respectively. These values compare well with the measurements reported elsewhere in the literature.

Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites were prepared using coagulation method. The electrical conductivity and the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding of SWNT/PMMA composites over the X-band (8–12 GHz) and the microwave (200–2000 MHz) frequency range have been investigated. The electrical conductivity of composites increases with SWNT loading by 13 orders of magnitude, from 10−15 to 10−2 Ω−1 cm−1 with a percolation threshold of about 3 wt% SWNTs. The effect of the sample thickness on the shielding effectiveness has been studied, and correlated to the electrical conductivity of composites. The data suggest that SWNT/PMMA composites containing higher SWNT loading (above 10 wt%) be useful for EMI shielding and those with lower SWNT loading be useful for electrostatic charge dissipation. The dominant shielding mechanism of SWNT/PMMA composites was also discussed. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2009. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers

In this feature article, dynamic indentation-induced deformation and fracture phenomena in brittle solids are related to the deformation behavior and fracture patterns evolved during dynamic impact on structural ceramics. Examples of indentation-induced localized amorphization in boron carbide (B4C) and differences in fracture characteristics due to static and dynamic indentations on B4C and zirconium diboride–silicon carbide (ZrB2–SiC) ceramic composite are presented. These features are compared with the fracture patterns evolved during the high-velocity ball impact on SiC. The influences of processing-induced (inherent) flaws and deformation-induced flaws on fracture initiation in a brittle material are discussed. Recent developments in analytical modeling of indentation- and impact-induced damage in ceramics and computational efforts on fracture and fragmentation response of ceramics are thoroughly reviewed. Finally, some future research directions are identified.

Shear band spacing in Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) under dynamic loads is found to vary with position and local strain rate in the indented region. To investigate the dependence of shear band evolution characteristics on local strain rate and normal stress, a micromechanical model based on momentum diffusion is proposed. The thermo-mechanical model takes into account the normal stress dependence of yield stress, the free volume theory and the associated viscosity change within the shear band region. Temperature rise is obtained from the balance between the heat diffusion to the adjacent regions from a shear band and the heat generation due to the accumulated plastic work in a shear band. The parametric study has revealed that thermal effects play a minor role when the critical shear displacement is below 10 nm (as in nanoindentation) but become significant when the shear displacement accumulated in a shear band is of the order of hundreds of nanometers (as in uniaxial compression and in dynamic indentations). Finally, it is found that the normal stress plays a crucial role in the deformation behavior of BMGs by not only decreasing the time for shear band formation but also increasing the temperature rise significantly.

Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) composites were synthesized in an internal mixer by melt mixing. The electrical conductivity as well as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) over the X-band (8–12 GHz) and microwave (200–2,000 MHz) frequency ranges of these composites were investigated. It was observed that the electrical conductivity of composites increases with increasing SWCNT loading. A percolation threshold of about 3.5 wt.% was obtained and the electrical conductivity of EVA was increased by ten orders of magnitude, from 10−14 to 10−4 Ω−1 cm−1. The effect of sample thickness on SE was investigated. The correlation between SE and conductivity of the composites is discussed. The experimental data showed that the SE of the composites containing higher carbon nanotube loadings (above 10 wt.%) could be used as an EMI shielding material and lower SWCNT loadings could be used for the dissipation of electrostatic charge.

Diatom frustules have been suggested for numerous nanotechnological applications. Experimental studies using nanoindenter have shown that the hardness and the stiffness of the frustules vary with location of indentation. To gain further insight, a computational framework has been developed where the Berkovich nanoindentation experiments were simulated by a rigid-deformable contact process. Three different approaches that provide progressively increasing level of understanding of the deformation behavior of frustules were adopted. The differences in the mechanical responses of the frustule due to variation of indentation location, size of pores, and distribution of pores were analyzed. It has been found that the effective stiffness of the frustule is linearly related to the porosity level and does not depend on the frustule size or its pore architecture. It has been shown that a 3D porous shell computational model is more appropriate to simulate the experimentally obtained mechanical response of diatom frustules.

Scratch tests are of fundamental interest both for understanding machining-induced damage and for evaluating the scratch resistance of brittle materials. An improved blister field model for the scratch process is proposed where the blister field strength is explicitly determined in terms of the material properties, loading conditions, and geometry of the scratch tool. Additionally, one new expanding cylindrical cavity model is implemented to estimate the plastic zone size surrounding the scratch groove. A quantitative evaluation of the damage zone size is conducted by combining the above two models. The predicted damage zone sizes are in good agreement with the results available elsewhere in literature.

The mode I interlaminar fracture in Z -pin reinforced composite laminates is modeled using a cohesive volumetric finite element (CVFE) scheme. The test configuration used in this study is a Z -pin reinforced double cantilever beam specimen. A bilinear rate-independent but damage-dependent cohesive traction–separation law is adopted to model the fracture of the unreinforced composite and discrete nonlinear spring elements to represent the effect of the Z -pins. The delamination toughness and failure strength of the Z -pin reinforced composites are determined by a detailed comparison study of the numerical modeling results with experimental data. To further reduce the computational effort, we introduce an equivalent distributed cohesive model as a substitute for the discrete nonlinear spring representation of the Z -pins. The cohesive model is implemented on various test problems with varying failure parameters and for varying spatial Z -pin reinforcement configurations showing good agreement with the experimental results.

Rotator cuff tears are a common problem in patients over the age of 50 yr. Tear propagation is a potential contributing factor to the failure of physical therapy for treating rotator cuff tears, thus requiring surgical intervention. However, the evolution of tears within the rotator cuff is not well understood yet. The objective of this study is to establish a computational model to quantify initiation of tear propagation in the supraspinatus tendon and examine the effect of tear size and location. A 3D finite element (FE) model of the supraspinatus tendon was constructed from images of a healthy cadaveric tendon. A tear of varying length was placed at six different locations within the tendon. A fiber-reinforced Mooney–Rivlin material model with spatial variation in material properties along the anterior–posterior (AP) axis was utilized to obtain the stress state of the computational model under uniaxial stretch. Material parameters were calibrated by comparing computational and experimental stress–strain response and used to validate the computational model. The stress state of the computational model was contrasted against the spatially varying material strength to predict the critical applied stretch at which a tear starts propagating further. It was found that maximum principal stress (as well as the strain) was localized at the tips of the tear. The computed critical stretch was significantly lower for the posterior tip of the tear than for the anterior tip suggesting a propensity to propagate posteriorly. Onset of tear propagation was strongly correlated with local material strength and stiffness in the vicinity of the tear tip. Further, presence of a stress-shielded zone along the edges of the tear was observed. This study illustrates the complex interplay between geometry and material properties of tendon up to the initiation of tear propagation. Future work will examine the evolution of tears during the propagation process as well as under more complex loading scenarios.

A numerical model to study the fatigue crack retardation in a self-healing material (White et al., 2001, Nature, 409, pp. 794–797) is presented. The approach relies on a combination of cohesive modeling for fatigue crack propagation and a contact algorithm to enforce crack closure due to an artificial wedge in the wake of the crack. The healing kinetics of the self-healing material is captured by introducing along the fracture plane a state variable representing the evolving degree of cure of the healing agent. The atomic-scale processes during the cure of the healing agent are modeled using a coarse-grain molecular dynamics model specifically developed for this purpose. This approach yields the cure kinetics and the mechanical properties as a function of the degree of cure, information that is transmitted to the continuum-scale models. The incorporation of healing kinetics in the model enables us to study the competition between fatigue crack growth and crack retardation mechanisms in this new class of materials. A systematic study of the effect of different loading and healing parameters shows a good qualitative agreement between experimental observations and simulation results.

A numerical model of fatigue crack growth retardation in polymers induced by artificial crack closure is proposed. The approach relies on the combination of cohesive modeling and a contact algorithm incorporated in the wake of the advancing crack to account for the effect of the introduced wedge. Numerical results are compared with existing experimental observations, showing the ability of the cohesive model to capture the key features of wedge-induced crack retardation. A study is conducted to quantify the effects of relevant parameters such as applied load levels, wedge distance to the crack tip and wedge stiffness. The model is also discussed in the context of self-healing polymers [White SR, Sottos NR, Moore J, Geubelle PH, Kessler M, Brown E, et al. Autonomic healing of polymer composites. Nature 2001;409:794–7], where the wedging effect is associated with the polymerization of the healing agent.

A cohesive failure model is proposed to simulate fatigue crack propagation in polymeric materials. The model relies on the combination of a bi-linear cohesive failure law used for fracture simulations under monotonic loading and an evolution law relating the cohesive stiffness, the rate of crack opening displacement and the number of cycles since the onset of failure. The fatigue component of the cohesive model involves two parameters that can be readily calibrated based on the classical log–log Paris failure curve between the crack advance per cycle and the range of applied stress intensity factor. The paper also summarizes a semi-implicit implementation of the cohesive model into a cohesive-volumetric finite element framework, allowing for the simulation of a wide range of fatigue fracture problems.

The fragmentation of a small ceramic specimen subjected to rapid uniform expansion is analyzed numerically at the mesoscale level using the cohesive/volumetric finite element (CVFE) scheme. The analysis is performed in plane strain and assumes intergranular crack motion. A combination of cohesive and optimization-based contact enforcement algorithms is used to model the complex contact events between the fragments generated in the process. The damage process is quantified using two parameters: one to capture the evolution of distributed damage in the ceramic specimen, and the other to represent the dynamic creation of discrete fragments. The basic features of the fragmentation process such as the initiation time and the evolution of the fragment size distribution are investigated. It is observed that the linear exponential distribution proposed by Grady and Kipp [Geometric statistics and dynamic fragmentation. J. Appl. Phys 1985;58(3)1210–22] adequately represents the cumulative fragment distribution throughout the fragmentation process. We also quantify the effect of the failure strength on the initiation and extent of damage. The granular microstructure of the specimen does not affect the initiation time of the fragmentation, but the average grain size influences the final damage of the material and has an effect on the average fragment size at higher loading rates. The average fragment size obtained numerically for a range of loading rates shows good agreement with existing theoretical models.

Aortic dissection (AoD) is a common condition that often leads to life-threatening cardiovascular emergency. From a biomechanics viewpoint, AoD involves failure of load-bearing microstructural components of the aortic wall, mainly elastin and collagen fibers. Delamination strength of the aortic wall depends on the load-bearing capacity and local micro-architecture of these fibers, which may vary with age, disease and aortic location. Therefore, quantifying the role of fiber micro-architecture on the delamination strength of the aortic wall may lead to improved understanding of AoD. We present an experimentally-driven modeling paradigm towards this goal. Specifically, we utilize collagen fiber micro-architecture, obtained in a parallel study from multi-photon microscopy, in a predictive mechanistic framework to characterize the delamination strength. We then validate our model against peel test experiments on human aortic strips and utilize the model to predict the delamination strength of separate aortic strips and compare with experimental findings. We observe that the number density and failure energy of the radially-running collagen fibers control the peel strength. Furthermore, our model suggests that the lower delamination strength previously found for the circumferential direction in human aorta is related to a lower number density of radially-running collagen fibers in that direction. Our model sets the stage for an expanded future study that could predict AoD propagation in patient-specific aortic geometries and better understand factors that may influence propensity for occurrence.

Recently, magnesium (Mg) alloys have received significant attention as a potential biomaterial for degradable implants, and this study was directed at evaluating the suitability of Mg for craniofacial bone screws. The objective was to implant screws fabricated from commercially available Mg-alloys (pure Mg and AZ31) in-vivo in a rabbit mandible. First, Mg-alloy screws were compared to stainless steel screws in an in-vitro pull-out test and determined to have a similar holding strength (~40N). A finite element model of the screw was created using the pull-out test data, and the model can be used for future Mg-alloy screw design. Then, Mg-alloy screws were implanted for 4, 8, and 12 weeks, with two controls of an osteotomy site (hole) with no implant and a stainless steel screw implanted for 12 weeks. MicroCT (computed tomography) was used to assess bone remodeling and Mg-alloy degradation, both visually and qualitatively through volume fraction measurements for all time points. Histologic analysis was also completed for the Mg-alloys at 12 weeks. The results showed that craniofacial bone remodeling occurred around both Mg-alloy screw types. Pure Mg had a different degradation profile than AZ31, however bone growth occurred around both screw types. The degradation rate of both Mg-alloy screw types in the bone marrow space and the muscle were faster than in the cortical bone space at 12 weeks. Furthermore, it was shown that by alloying Mg, the degradation profile could be changed. These results indicate the promise of using Mg-alloys for craniofacial applications.

Each year, there are over six million bone fractures in the U.S., over 30% of which require internal fixation devices to stabilize bone fragments during healing [1–2]. Currently, the gold standard materials for these devices are non-degradable titanium alloys. Unfortunately, these devices cause numerous complications and often require a secondary invasive removal surgery [3–4]. To circumvent these issues, resorbable polymeric devices have been developed, but their mechanical limitations render them inadequate for most load bearing applications [5–7].Copyright © 2013 by ASME

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is defined as the descent of the pelvic organs into the vaginal canal. POP is a widespread condition among women, with a 7% lifetime risk for a single operation1. For surgical treatment, polypropylene mesh is often implanted to restore support to the pelvic organs. However, up to 20% of those who undergo surgery with mesh will require repeat operations for recurrent symptoms or complications2. One of the most common complications is mesh erosion3. Erosion is characterized by degeneration of the native vaginal tissue in contact with the mesh, resulting in the mesh migrating through the vagina. Though the cause of mesh erosion is undefined, surgeons have described this complication by the appearance of mesh “contraction”, “buckling”, “wrinkling”, and/or “bunching”. Based on the facts that the thickness of a shear band in bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) is a few tens of nanometers, the shear displacement across the band is few micrometers, and the time for their formation is in submicrosecond duration, the local strain rates within the shear band can be as high as 109∕s. To capture such dynamic effects, a thermo-micromechanical model based on momentum diffusion mechanism, free-volume theory, and heat diffusion analysis is proposed. The model has been shown to capture the characteristic rate effects, i.e., significant local temperature rise and a dramatic drop in viscosity during shear band evolution in BMGs. The model also takes into account the effects of normal stress component on the deformation behavior of BMGs. While the predicted maximum temperature rise under quasistatic deformation in the absence of normal component of stress is low (300 K), significant temperature rise well above 1000 K accompanied by a sudden drop in viscosity has been predicted under dynamic ...

Synthetic polypropylene meshes were designed to restore pelvic organ support for women suffering from pelvic organ prolapse; however, the FDA released two notifications regarding the potential complications associated with mesh implantation. Our aim was to characterize the structural properties of Restorelle and UltraPro subjected to uniaxial tension along perpendicular directions, and then model the tensile behavior of these meshes utilizing a co-rotational finite element model, with an imbedded linear or fiber-recruitment local stress-strain relationship. Both meshes exhibited highly nonlinear stress-strain behavior; Restorelle had no significant differences between the two perpendicular directions, while UltraPro had a 93% difference in the low (initial) stiffness (p=0.009) between loading directions. Our model predicted that early alignment of the mesh segments in the loading direction and subsequent stretching could explain the observed nonlinear tensile behavior. However, a nonlinear stress-strain response in the stretching regime, that may be inherent to the mesh segment, was required to better capture experimental results. Utilizing a nonlinear fiber recruitment model with two parameters A and B, we observed improved agreement between the simulations and the experimental results. An inverse analysis found A=120 MPa and B=1.75 for Restorelle (RMSE=0.36). This approach yielded A=30 MPa and B=3.5 for UltraPro along one direction (RMSE=0.652), while the perpendicular orientation resulted in A=130 MPa and B=4.75 (RMSE=4.36). From the uniaxial protocol, Restorelle was found to have little variance in structural properties along these two perpendicular directions; however, UltraPro was found to behave anisotropically.
