Abstract

The numerical simulation and experimental results and their analysis are presented for the dynamic elastic-plastic deformation of a disk subjected to penetrating loading produced by a short cylindrical steel pin. The pin keeps the high level of kinetic energy due to the heavy joined mass. The computer model has been verified by the comparison of the numerical and experimental dynamic forces, and the residual displacements and deformations of the plate. The careful analysis of the deformation and failure of the plate is presented in the paper.

Abstract

The study of chemical composition of the surface layer of glass after electrochemical treatment by tin melts [i] revealed its difference from the main mass of glass. The difference lies in the lower content of Na20 and small additional content of tin in the form of oxides on the surface and also in the different valency state of the elements on the surface. Besides, there is migration of CaO from the glass surface to a small extent.

Abstract

It is known that certain glasses in the system Na2O-B2O3-SiO2 separate into two phases during heat treatment: a low-melting phase (L), containing mainly Na2O and B2O3, and a high-melting phase (H), with a high silica content. The low-melting component of these glasses is removed by treatment with acids, while the remaining high-silica skeleton forms a glass penetrated by minute pores [1, 2].

Abstract

Low-loss optical fibers were prepared as follows. Halide vapors were oxidized inside a quartz jacket tube placed in a traveling hot zone. The tube was then collapsed into a rod blank and fibers were drawn. The deposited halide films were doped with boron and phosphorus in accordance with a selected program. The losses in a "gradient" fiber of this kind were 4 dB/km at λ = 0.85 μ and the numerical aperture was 0.22.

Abstract

Glass samples 4 mm thick were covered with SnO/sub 2/ containing radioactive Sb. The film was applied by spraying an alcoholic solution of SnCl4 at 640 deg C. The treated film was then irradiated with gamma -rays in dosages of 5.6 x 10/sup 5/ r. Measurements of the specific conductivity before and after irradiation did not show any noticeable change in the conductivity. (OID)
