The crystal structures of MnSc2S4 and CdSc2S4 have been determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. MnSc2S4 crystallises in a normal spinel structure (space group Fd 3 m) while for CdSc2S4 prepared at 900°C space group F 4 3m is observed. In the structure of CdSc2S4 the tetrahedral 8a site of the spinel structure is split into two different sites one of which exhibits a site occupation factor (sof) of only 0.9. A corresponding amount of Cd is found in an additional octahedral site (sof=0.1). The structure can be looked at as a transition state between the spinel and the sodium chloride structure. CdSc2S4 prepared at 600°C adopts a normal spinel structure (space group Fd 3 m) as has been elucidated from X-ray powder diffraction data by Rietveld analysis. The structure of FeSc2S4 has been determined from X-ray powder data by Rietveld analysis. FeSc2S4 crystallises in a normal spinel structure. more...
