Within the process of landfill design and defining design parameters for the construction of new, or for the old landfill remediation, long-term, expensive and relatively restricted borehole drilling is implemented. Borehole investigations give data like point with very difficult soil sampling in waste material. Deformability of waste material is crucial for the mechanical bearing resistance of the landfill. A physical-mechanical property of the landfill material depends on waste material composition, volume and density, as well as moist and landfill age that sets the rate of the total settlement. This paper presents geophysical investigations of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) for a detection area of intense settlement of Jakuševac landfill body. Data were generated by utilizing geophysical methods: Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW), 2D Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Microtremor HVSR (Horizontal-to- Vertical Spectral Ratio). MASW results help in detecting layering lithology, depth of the soil mass and elastic properties (stiffness) of waste. Geoelectrical tomography results in fine spatial profiling of the landfill body, as well as potential aquifer contamination and clay lining system detection. Microtremor HVSR is a fast and simple method to determine local site effect, or to determine the predominant frequency and amplification factor. Anomaly determined by geophysical investigations and presented on geophysical profiles are correlated with the position of the biggest settlement visible on landfill cover system. 2D display of shear wave velocities from MASW seismic method is a direct image of deformation characteristics of the waste. Engineering- geology properties of the bedrock can also be defined from the Microtremor HVSR and ERT investigations, as well as estimation of the total volume of the waste material.

In the implementation of the characterization, i.e. the determination of the relevant mechanical and physical characteristics of the municipal waste landfill, it is necessary to define the optimal scope of the investigative works. The criterion of an optimum is determined by the minimum volume of planned actions with maximizing their performance. Generally, exploratory drillings give the so-called dotted data, with a regularly questionable quality of undisturbed and even disturbed samples. At the same time, they are economically disadvantageous given the usual unit cost of their implementation. Consequently, a number of relevant examples show that the application of geophysical methods is an optimal process for obtaining relevant information regarding the solution of various engineering tasks. For example, in determining physical-mechanical and geometrical properties of municipal waste a wide range of geophysical methods is used. The paper presents examples of geophysical methods for determining the necessary characteristics of municipal waste landfill in the northwestern part of Croatia. It has been shown that the volume and quality of the data obtained fully meet the requirements of the designer and the investor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Odlagalište ,komunalni otpad ,MASW ,ERT ,DPH - Abstract

A site located on the island of Brač is known in history for world-famous architectural stone and stone mining, dating all the way back to ancient Greek and Roman times. The most famous building constructed from the stone from Brač is the Diocletian Cesar Palace in the town Split. Prospective new locations for quarries are still required because the demand for the stone from the island is still high. This paper presents a review of undertaken geophysical investigations, as well as engineering geologic site prospection, with the purpose of determining if the rock mass quality is suitable for the mining of massive blocks needed for an architectural purpose—dimension stones. Several surface noninvasive geophysical methods were applied on the site, comprising of two seismic methods, multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and shallow refraction seismic (SRS) electrical methods of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), as well as electromagnetic exploration with ground penetrating radar (GPR). Results of geophysical investigations were compared to the engineering geologic prospection results, as well to the visible rock mass structure and observed discontinuities on the neighboring existing open mine quarry. Rock mass was classified into three categories according to its suitability for dimension stone exploitation. Each category is defined by compressional and shear seismic velocities as well as electrical resistivity. It has been found that even small changes in moisture content within the large monolithic rock mass can influence measured values of electrical resistivity. In the investigated area, dimension stone quarrying is advisable if the rock mass has values of resistivity higher than 3000 Ωm, as well as compressional seismic velocities higher than 3000 m/s and shear wave velocities higher than 1500 m/s. Georadar was found to be a good tool for the visual determination of fissured systems, and was used to confirm findings from other geophysical methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
