Objectives: In this study, we aimed to investigate the availability of the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test in daily practice instead of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) test for the evaluation of fear of movement and to assess the functionality of the upper extremity in postmastectomy lymphedema patients. Patients and methods: Between March 2018 and July 2018, a total of 30 female patients (mean age 53.8±12.3 years; range, 35 to 80 years) with postmastectomy lymphedema were included in this study. The severity of lymphedema of the patients was measured circumferentially at 5-cm intervals. All patients were evaluated for upper extremity functionality using the Timed Functional Arm and Shoulder Test, hand grip strength using a hand dynamometer, and pinch strength using a pinchmeter. AIM: This study was carried out to determine women’s knowledge about lymphedema precautions and their practice status. The sample of this descriptive and correlationally designed study included 107 women who underwent surgery. METHOD: This descriptive study’s data were collected using a questionnaire form developed by the researcher. The data were structured on a 3-point Likert-type scale. The one-way analysis of variance, correlations, and the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test were used in the statistical analysis. RESULTS: Three-quarters of the women knew that they should do arm exercises, keep the arm above the heart level while resting, and that blood pressure should not be measured, and jewelry not be worn. However, it was found that the percentage of women who did not know that the arm circumference should be measured at regular intervals or how to evaluate the arm circumference measurements and what to do in case of an injury was the same. It was determined that the precautions that the majority of women took in measuring lymphedema consisted of not measuring blood pressure, not wearing tight jewelry, and wearing an appropriate bra. CONCLUSION: It is thought that patients should be informed about the development of lymphedema after breast cancer surgery because their compliance with taking the precautions will be important in reducing the incidence, degree, and effects of lymphedema. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of lymphedema severity on scapular kinematics in post-mastectomy patients with moderate to severe lymphedema and non-lymphedema which were divided according to the volumetric difference. 46 women who underwent radical or modified radical mastectomy as part of their breast cancer treatment were included. Patients were divided into 3 groups as no lymphedema (n=15), moderate lymphedema (n=15) and severe lymphedema (n=16). Volumetric measurements by measuring the upper extremity volumes, the active range of motion with the inclinometer, The Shortened Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire (Quick DASH) and scapula kinematic analysis with the electromagnetic system at 30-60-90 ° lifting and lowering of the arm elevation were recorded. The obtained data were analyzed by nonparametric tests. The duration of lymphedema was higher in the severe lymphedema group than in the moderate lymphedema group (p0.05). In the correlation test between the duration of lymphedema and the scapular kinematics, as the lymphedema duration increased, a middle-strength correlation was detected in the direction of scapular kinematics deterioration (p0.05).
