Introduction: Distinguishing and categorizing the origin of garlic are highly significant, considering its widespread use as a flavoring agent. With billions of dollars annually in global trade, garlic is frequently susceptible to fraudulent practices., Methodology: Paper spray ionization mass spectrometry (PS-MS) was employed to quickly analyze garlic samples from distinct geographic origins: China and Brazil. The so-generated PS-MS data were treated with metabolomic multivariate approaches, and the garlic samples from these different geographic regions were easily discriminated., Results: Brazilian garlic was characterized to contain higher levels of amino acids, such as arginine, proline, and valine, and organosulfur compounds, such as allicin, alliin, and l-γ-glutamil-S-allyl-l-cysteine, compared to Chinese garlic. Antioxidants are ubiquitous in various environmental samples, leading to increasing concern regarding their potential risk to environments or humans. However, there is dearth of information regarding the environmental fate of antioxidants and unknown/unexpected antioxidants in the environment. Here, we established a compound database (CDB) containing 320 current-used antioxidants by collecting the chemicals from EPA's functional use database and published documents. Physical-chemical characteristics of these antioxidants were estimated, and 19 ones were considered as persistent and bioaccumulative (P&B) substances. This CDB was further coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) technique, which was employed for suspect screening of antioxidants in extracts of sediments (n = 88) collected from Taihu Lake basin. We screened 119 HRMS features that can match 135 chemical formulas in the CDB, and 20 out of them exhibited the detection frequencies ≥ 90%. The total concentrations of suspect antioxidants in sediments ranged from 6.41 to 830 ng/g dw. Statistical analysis demonstrated that concentrations of suspect antioxidants in Taihu Lake were statistically significantly lower than those in Shihu and Jiulihu Lake, but greater than those from other small lakes. Collectively, this study provided a CDB that could be helpful for further monitoring studies of antioxidant in the environments, and also provided the first evidence regarding the ubiquity of antioxidants in aquatic environment of Taihu Lake basin., (© 2024. Apples are important fruits in China, and their authentication is beneficial for quality control. However, the differentiation between apples from two primary producing regions, the surrounding Bohai Bay (BHB) and the Loess Plateau (LP), has not been well studied. This study used element and metabolite fingerprints combined with mathematical recognition techniques to discriminate between BHB and LP apples. A total of 235 samples were collected from these regions during 2018-2019. The apple element and metabolite profiles were obtained via instrument analysis. Differential elements and metabolites between BHB and LP apples were identified, and linear and nonlinear discriminant models were constructed. Nonlinear models demonstrated higher accuracy and effectiveness in model optimization. The final random forest (RF) model, constructed with 11 elements and 51 metabolites, achieved a training accuracy of 91.51% and a validation accuracy of 98.57%. Hops, extensively cultivated in China for their food and medicinal applications, currently lack well-defined chemical markers to evaluate variations in their quality. The study aimed to explore variations in the quality of Chinese hops by the chemical characteristics of hops, employing UPLC-Q-TOF/MS, integrated with chemical fingerprinting and chemometrics. The results indicated that Chinese hops are abundant in polyphenols and bitter acids. The integration of UPLC-Q-TOF/MS, Chemical fingerprinting, and chemometrics revealed to be an accurate and effective approach for assessing the quality of Chinese hops. In this study, ten important chemical markers were found to be useful in differentiating various hop varieties. Moreover, the support vector machine showed a prediction accuracy of 92.3077% in identifying Chinese hop varieties. Coal gangue is a by-product of coal, the output of which is as high as 30% of raw coal, whereas only 30% of it is recycled. The leftover remains in the environment from gangue backfilling areas and overlap with residential, agricultural, and industrial areas. Coal gangue accumulated in the environment is easily weathered and oxidized and becomes a source of various pollutants. In this paper, 30 coal gangue samples (fresh and weathered coal gangues) were collected from three mine areas in Huaibei, Anhui province, China. Gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS) was used to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze thirty polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), including 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (16PAHs), preferentially controlled by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), and the corresponding alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (a-PAHs). The results showed that PACs existed objectively in coal gangue, and the content of a-PAHs was higher than that of 16PAHs (average values for 16PAHs ranged from 77.8 to 581 ng/g; average values for a-PAHs ranged from 97.4 to 3179 ng/g). Moreover, coal types not only affected the content and type of PACs but also affected the distribution pattern of a-PAHs at different substitution sites. With the increase of gangue weathering degree, the composition of a-PAHs kept changing; the low ring a-PAHs were more easily diffused to the environment, and the high ring a-PAHs remained enriched in the weathered coal gangue. The correlation analysis showed that the correlation between fluoranthene (FLU) and alkylated fluoranthene (a-FLU) was as high as 94%, and the calculated ratios were not more than 1.5. The basic conclusion is that not only 16PAHs and a-PAHs objectively existed in the coal gangue, but also the characteristic compound belonging to the pollution source of coal gangue oxidation have been discovered. This study explored the composition and energy potential of university solid waste (USW) in China. Five combustible components, namely hard plastics (HP), paper (PP), soft plastics (SP), biomass (BM), and rubber (RB), were screened with the compositions 51%, 29%, 9%, 4%, and 3%, respectively. Each USW sample was gasified using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) at the heating rates of 5, 10, and 15 ℃/min and a final process temperature of 900 ℃. Thermal weight loss (TG) curves exposed the degradation in the order HP > SP > RB > BM > PP. Derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) peaks revealed that HP, PP, BM, and SP were degraded in three temperature-oriented phases in the range 172–731 ℃. The RB took an additional phase in the range 584–660 ℃. Major released gases, H2, CH4, CO, and CO2, were detected using MS via mass-to-charge (m/z) ratios. Higher H2 and total gas yield produced in the case of the HP dominated other materials at the lower heating rate of 5 ℃/min. Validation of data was assessed by equating experimental and calculated curves; therefore, the regression coefficient (R2) ranged between 0.884 and 0.997. The kinetics of the process were estimated by applying the Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) model at the conversion rates (α) of 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8, which presented reasonable results. Paper-capillary spray modified on the basis of paper spray ionization in order to facilitate the combination with portable mass spectrometry is an ambient ionization technique, which can be uesd to detect compounds rapidly without the restriction of location and environment. Paper-capillary spray and ambient ionization portable mass spectrometry in positive ion mode were used to collect mass spectrum information of 40 kinds of cathinones controlled in China. The ［M+H］+ peak of MS1, the characteristic fragment ions of MS2 and MS2_DDA mode and their relative abundance ratio were analyzed. The obtained mass spectrum information was used to establish a database for the rapid screening of 40 cathinones. It was found that C—N cleavage at the α site existed in all the cathinones through the study of their fragmentation characteristics. Whether the highest ion peak was ［M—H2O+H］+ fragment peak could infer the existence of secondary and tertiary amine structures. A series of characteristic peaks of m/z 98+CnH2n would exist when the N was substituted by pyrrolidinyl. The characteristic ion of ［M+H］+ lost 48 u or that of non ［M+H］+ lost 30 u would exist when the benzene ring was substituted by methylenedioxy. The fragmentation characteristics were studied to design and establish a complete analysis strategy for the unknown cathinones. The strategy could be applied in the following three aspects. 1) To judge whether they are cathinones; 2) To judge whether they are 40 kinds of cathinones in the database; 3) To infer the characteristic structure of cathinones outside the scope of the database. The strategy was successfully used for the structural identification of 10 analytes, which included the common categories of drugs controlled in China. No interference or misjudgment was found, and the database could be used normally. The structures inferred by the analysis strategy were consistent with the actual structure, and the isomers involved would also be distinguished because of their different fragment ions, indicating that this scheme was feasible. This method only needs simple sample loading operation and integrated small mass spectrometer, and is not limited by location and environment. In the investigation of such drug cases, this method can carry out rapid screening and timely feedback, which plays an important role in the rapid and accurate crackdown on the crime of cathinones and it is expected to be a new way to study and judge the crime of cathinones. Cotoneaster zabelii Schneid is a unique wood biological resource in China, but its natural ingredients are not used effectively. In this paper, ethanol and phenyl alcohol were used to study the leaves and branches of Cotoneaster zabelii Schneid. Gas chromatographic/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that Cotoneaster zabelii Schneid was rich in chemical constituents that could be used as raw materials for medicine and food. An in-depth study of Cotoneaster zabelii Schneid can provide a more accurate understanding of the value of its internal chemical composition, which can be widely applied in medicine to manufacture new drugs and promote the development of medical technology. INTRODUCTION This study comprehensively assessed the association between eight metabolites of urinary nicotine and cognitive impairment. METHODS This cross-sectional study was based on the data of Shenzhen Aging Related Disorder Cohort (SADC), including 51 elderly community data variables such as demographic characteristics, neuropsychological assessment and environmental factors, from July 2017 to November 2018. Participant's cognitive function was assessed by Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scale and urinary nicotine metabolite [including cotinine N-β-D-glucuronide (CotGluc), rac 4-hydroxy-4-(3-pyridyl) butanoic acid dicyclohexylamine salt (HyPyBut), trans-3'-hydroxy cotinine O-β-D-glucuronide (OHCotGluc), and cotinine (Cot), etc.] concentrations were measured by high-performance liquid chromatographytandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Generalized linear models and restricted cubic spline models were used to explore the relationships between the urinary levels of nicotine metabolite and cognitive function. RESULTS A total of 296 individuals aged >60 years were included. Individuals in the third quartile of CotGluc had a 0.786 point (95% CI: -1.244 -- -0.329) decrease or in the highest quartile of OHCotGluc had a 0.804 point (95% CI: -1.330 -- -0.278) decreased in attention and calculation compared to those in the lowest quartile (all p for trend <0.05). Compared with those in the lowest quartile, individuals in the highest quartile of CotGluc, HyPyBut, OHCotGluc and Cot, respectively, corresponded to a 1.043 point (95% CI: -2.269-0.182), 1.101 points (95% CI: -2.391-0.188), 2.318 points (95% CI: -3.615 -- -1.020), and 1.460 points (95% CI: -2.726 -- -0.194) decreased in MMSE total score (all p for trend <0.05). A nonlinear dose-response relationship between urinary levels of CotGluc, HyPyBut, OHCotGluc or Cot and cognitive function (all overall p<0.05, non-linear p<0.05). Subgroup analysis showed that urinary levels of CotGluc, OHCotGluc or Cot were significantly negatively associated with cognitive function (all p for trend <0.05) among females and non-smokers. CONCLUSIONS The findings highlight the public health implications of environmental tobacco smoke exposure, and effective interventions need to be performed for vulnerable populations. Helium gas is a scarce but important strategic resource, which is usually associated with natural gas. Presently, only one extra-large helium-rich gas field has been found in China: the Hetianhe Gas Field in the Tarim Basin. This paper reports a new example, the Dongsheng Gas Field (DGF) in the Ordos Basin. In this study, 92 natural gas samples from the DGF were analyzed for helium content and isotope composition using isotope mass spectrometry. The natural gas samples were found to have an average helium content of 0.133%, with 65 (70.7%) of the samples having a helium content of 0.1% or more. Based on the proven natural gas reserves of the DGF, the proven geological helium reserves were calculated to be 1.96×108 m3, suggesting that it represents the first extra-large helium-rich natural gas reservoir to be hosted in tight sandstone in China. The 3He/4He ratios of 5 natural gas samples from the DGF are within the range of 3.03×10−8−3.44×10−8. Therefore, the helium in the gas field is thought to be of typical crustal origin and to have formed in the granitic basement that is rich in uranium and thorium. The accumulation of helium-rich natural gas was controlled by regional tectonic activities. Activity along the fault connecting the reservoir with the basement caused release of the helium gas, which entered the overlying strata along the fault and accumulated with conventional hydrocarbon gas. Based on the structural background and the distribution of helium source rocks in the Ordos Basin, the main helium source rocks with high exploration potential are located in deep strata within the north and middle parts of the basin. This paper briefly introduces the analysis technology and characteristics of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and summarizes the application of rare earth, rare scattering and precious elements detection in minerals in the past three years. For the analysis of different kinds of elements, the key points are briefly mentioned in sample processing and mass spectrum interference. Moreover, the current or upcoming standards for the analysis of ore and minerals by ICP-MS are introduced. Besides, the application direction of ICP-MS in mineral analysis is prospected. The sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus) has become increasingly important aquaculture with the rapid expansion of farming in China and its commercial popularity in Asia. Price varies significantly among sea cucumber species, and since visual differentiation is difficult, food fraud is likely to occur. In this study, we report an analysis of body wall metabolites of the sea cucumber (A. japonicus) from different geographical origins in Dalian, Pikou, Jinzhou and Rushan using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/MS). The metabolites of sea cumbers of the different geographical origins were assessed using orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) and analysed using KEGG metabolic pathway analysis. The OPLS-DA clearly discriminated the body wall metabolites of sea cucumbers from the four regions. The differential metabolites mainly included amino acids and lipids. The KEGG metabolic pathway analysis showed that lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism and protein metabolism were closely related to geographical origin. Per-poly fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a group of synthetic fluorine compounds used in food packaging materials to repel water and fats. This study assessed the chemical migration of PFAS from different food contact materials, including cardboard, recycled cardboard, biopolymer, paper and Teflon trays, from various markets. Migration assays were conducted using Tenax® as a food simulant, which was optimized by subjecting it to three consecutive extractions with 3 mL of ethanol within an hour. The resulting extractions were combined and concentrated to 0.5 mL using a nitrogen stream. The analysis was performed using ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled with ion-mobility (IMS) quadrupole-time-of-flight (QTOF) mass spectrometry, which provided a powerful and novel tool for identifying a library of targets containing collision cross section values (CCS) and increasing confidence in subsequent identifications. Eleven PFAS compounds belonging to the family of perfluorocarboxylic acid, perfluorosulfonic acid and perfluorooctanesulfonamidoacetic acid substances (PFCAs, PFSAs and FOSAAs) were found in packaging samples obtained from China, with migrant concentrations ranging 3.2 and 22.3 μg/kg. In contrast, no detectable levels of PFAS were observed in packaging samples obtained in Spain. All trays tested were deemed to be suitable for use as food contact materials due to the fact that their migrant values were lower than 0.025 mg/kg for PFOA and its salts, and lower than a maximum concentration of 1 mg/kg for PFOA-related compounds. An improved analytical method was developed for the simultaneous quantification of ionic and nonionic perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in surface water followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC-MS/MS). The conditions for liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry were optimized and several solid phase extraction cartridges and elution solvents were compared. The low detection limits of the analytes ranged from 0.010 to 0.285 ng/L. Reasonable recoveries (76.4–112.3%) were demonstrated at different spiked levels with relative standard deviations lower than 18.9%. The method was applied for the surface water samples collected from different sampling sites in the Qiantang River, China. The results showed that 7 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids and 3 perfluroalkane sulfonic acids were detected while perfluorosulfonamide were not present. In addition, the total concentrations of PFASs in middle and downstream of the Qiantang River were higher (154.11–199.28 ng/L) than upstream (9.38–9.80 ng/L), which may be due to presence of the textile and paper industries. Nucleic acid constituents are the main functional ingredients in edible fungi, therefore understanding the nucleic acid constituents of edible fungi often eaten on the table by the Chinese people is of significant value. In this study, Sichuan Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention collected 147 samples of edible fungi (including certain species that the Chinese often eat) from different parts of the Sichuan Basin. A new UPLC-QqQ/MS method has been developed to determine the 17 nucleic acid constituents in these 147 samples, including guanosine, adenosine, uridine, cytidine, inosine, thymidine, xanthosine dehydrate, 2'-deoxyguanosine, 2'-deoxyadenosine, 2'-deoxyuridine, 2'-deoxycytidine, 2'-deoxyinosine, guanosine 5'-monophosphate, adenosine 5'-monophosphate, uridine 5'-monophosphate, cytidine 5'-monophosphate, and inosine 5'-monophosphate. Finally, similarity assessment of the main edible fungus was performed using vectorial angle cosine method, and hierarchical cluster analysis was used to classify all the 147 samples. The results showed that some edible fungi have high similarities, especially in Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler, the monogenic nucleotides content of which (55.84 ± 8.4 mg/100 g) is far greater than any other edible fungus, which is directly related to its taste. For quality control, this paper proposed to use the reference values of total nucleic acid compounds in edible fungi computed by percentile threshold method. Heavy oils have high viscosity, density, and Conradson carbon residue and high contents of sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, nickel, and vanadium, as well as asphaltenes, which can cause problems for producers, leading to catalyst deactivation and fouling and plugging of tubing, pipes, valves, and reactor flow lines. Heavy oil upgrading can be classified into carbon rejection and hydrogen addition processes, mainly including four technologies: (1) the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) process, which catalytically converts heavy oil into light fractions, like liquid petroleum gas, naphtha, and light cycle oil; (2) the hydro-processing process, which catalytically converts heavy oil to high-quality feedstock for FCC and hydrocracking processes under the hydrogen atmosphere without coke formation; (3) the coking process, which thermally converts heavy oil into light liquid fractions and large amounts of coke; and (4) the solvent deasphalting process, which fractionates distillation resid to provide feedstock for residue FCC, such as the residue oil solvent extraction. This paper reviews the progress on basic research of heavy oil chemistry and processing technology developments in China. Heavy oils were comprehensively characterized by the supercritical fluid extraction and fractionation technology and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The FCC process for maximizing iso-paraffin, new residue hydroprocessing technologies, progress in coking process, and a new process – the Supercritical Fluid Selective Extraction Asphaltene Technology – were discussed. As an emerging and promising research area, molecular management techniques were prospected, as well as a new concept of coupling the SELEX-Asp with the conventional heavy oil upgrading processes. Since the 'rediscovery' of the Selden map of China, an early seventeenth century map of Asia, in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, the importance of the map in our understanding of globalisation in the early seventeenth century has been recognised. One of the unresolved questions is the origin of the map. This paper addresses the question through material evidence provided by a holistic approach using a suite of complementary analytical techniques. The map was examined in situ and non-invasively by a remote spectral imaging instrument (PRISMS) modified for close range imaging, which was followed by a range of complementary techniques applied to a number of detached fragments, though most of the techniques are non-invasive and can be applied to the map directly in the future. The binding medium was found to be a gum, almost certainly gum Arabic, rather than the animal glue commonly used in Chinese paintings. Some of the pigments and their usage were found to be at odds with the common practice in paintings from China. The detection of gum Arabic, a binding medium used by the Europeans, South and West Asians and the use of a mixture of orpiment and indigo, commonly found in European, South and West Asian paintings gives further evidence on the unusual origins of this map. The likely detection of a basic copper chloride, such asatacamite, in the green areas suggests an influence from the South and West Asian rather than the European tradition. Detailed analysis of the various spectral bands of the spectral image cube along with visual inspection of the large scale colour image showed that the map was not fully planned at the beginning but rather painted in stages, at times by trial and error and that it was unfinished. A new hypothesis for the origin of the Selden map in Aceh Sumatra is proposed based on the new evidences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eucommia ulmoides Oliver, a single species of Eucommia genus belonging to the Eucommiaceae family, is an endemic in China and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for nearly two thousand years. Records from different historical periods highlight E. ulmoides and its officinal botanical parts, usefulness in adaptation to disease and its central role in Chinese medicine theory. There are also historical collection documents for minorities in China. Tearing the leaves, bark and fruit produces strands of latex; a description of E. ulmoides's morphological features is recorded in this paper. This review summarizes 204 natural compounds isolated from this plant, which are divided into seven categories: lignans, iridoids, flavonoids, phenols, steroids, terpenes and others. These components possess wide-ranging pharmacological efficacies, such as antihypertensive, antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemia, anti-oxidative, anti-osteoporosis, antitumor, immunomodulatory and neuroprotective activities. This review aims to provide a reference for extensive researches of E. ulmoides crude drugs, especially for quality control, biosynthesis and structure modification of active ingredients and pharmacological mechanism. Saxifraga stolonifera is an edible and herbaceous plant, which has been demonstrated to have anti-tumor effects in vivo and in vitro. The aim of this paper is to determine the main bioactive components in S. stolonifera, and their distribution in different parts of S. stolonifera and in S. stolonifera that was cultivated in different places in China using a high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector and electrospray ionization/ion trap mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-ESI/MSn). Four main components were identified and three were quantified. The contents of gallic acid, protocatechuic acid and bergenin had significant differences not only between the roots and stems-leaves of the plant, but also among different cultivated varieties of S. stolonifera. The experiment showed that the method used here exhibited good repeatability and recovery. Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus, as a homology of medicine and food, has been widely used in China for thousands of years. However, the existing qualitative and quantitative methods are difficult to evaluate the quality of Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus samples from multiple sources. In this paper, an high‐performance liquid chromatography fingerprint was established for assessing the quality of Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus from different areas. Then, high‐performance liquid chromatography was coupled to Fourier transform‐ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry for characterization of the chemical compositions in Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus. In fingerprint analysis, 54 common peaks were confirmed and six chromatographic peaks of them were identified. The similarity of 14 samples from different areas was between 0.990 and 1.000. Moreover, a total of 30 chemical components were characterized by high‐performance liquid chromatography coupled to Fourier transform‐ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry method, six compounds of which were decisively identified. Finally, the content of nootkatone was determined by high‐performance liquid chromatography. In conclusion, the methods used in this study are efficient for qualitative and quantitative analysis of Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus. Volatile chemical products (VCPs) have become an important source of reactive organic gases (ROGs) in urban areas worldwide. Industrial activities can also utilize a large number of VCPs and emit many organic gases into the atmosphere. Due to multiple sampling and measurement challenges, only a subset of ROG species is usually measured for many industrial VCP sources. This study aims to investigate the emissions of ROGs from five industrial VCP sources in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of China, including the shoemaking, plastic surface coating, furniture coating, printing, and ship coating industries. A more comprehensive speciation of ROG emissions from these industrial VCP sources was developed by the combination of proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) and the gas chromatography–mass spectrometer/flame ionization detector (GC–MS/FID). Our study identified oxygenated ROG species (OVOCs) as representative ROGs emitted from these sources, which are highly related to specific chemicals used during industrial activities. Moreover, mass spectra similarity analysis revealed significant dissimilarities among the ROG emissions from industrial activities, indicating substantial variations between different industrial VCP sources. Except for the ship coating industry utilizing solvent-borne coatings, the proportions of OVOCs range from 67 % to 96 % in total ROG emissions and 72 % to 97 % in total OH reactivity (OHR) for different industrial sources, while the corresponding contributions of OVOCs in the ship coating industry are only 16 ± 3.5 % and 15 ± 3.6 %. The industrial VCP sources associated with solvent-borne coatings exhibited a higher ozone formation potential (OFP), reaching as high as 5.5 and 2.7 g O 3 g -1 ROGs for the ship coating and furniture coating industries, primarily due to contributions from aromatics. We find that a few species can contribute the majority of the ROG emissions and also their OHR and OFP from various industrial VCP sources. Our results suggest that ROG treatment devices may have limited effectiveness for all ROGs, with treatment efficiencies ranging from - 12 % to 68 %. Furthermore, we found that ambient measurements in industrial areas have been significantly impacted by industrial VCP sources, and ROG pairs (e.g., methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) / C 8 aromatics ratio) can be utilized as reliable evidence by using high-time-resolution ROG measurements from PTR-ToF-MS. Chinese liquors are often a very important part of social event in China. Driven by high profit, some illegal traders often use inferior liquors instead of the products with high quality to cheat the customer. Therefore, it is highly required to authenticate Chinese liquors. In this paper a novel method based on ambient glow discharge ionization mass spectrometry has been developed to differentiate Chinese liquors. Volatile components from liquor samples were ionized by the plasma generated by glow discharge and then detected by a commercial linear ion trap mass spectrometer. Consequently, the fingerprint mass spectra of several Chinese liquors were obtained. Combined with principal component analysis, this new method was successfully applied to differentiate different brands of Chinese liquors without any sample pretreatment. Compared with conventional methods, this novel method has the advantages of easy operation, high speed, and high efficiency, which make it a potential tool in the fields of food safety, atmosphere chemistry. Stable isotope ratios of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen act as "nature's recorder". A s a carrier for individual human information, human hair can be measured by isotope ratio mass spectrometry ORMS) to translate into information about people's dietary habits, health condition and life track. The basic principle behind establishing dietary lifestyle using isotopic profiles of human hair is the fact that the body's only source of C, N is a person's staple diet. It may have significant differences in carbon, nitrogen isotopic compositions of human hair that are living at different regions. The aim of the study was to analyze the discrepancy of 15N and 13C stable isotope ratios in human hair collected from different cities, and explore the relationship between carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios and human groups, such as gender and age. The carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios in the human hair of 247 local residents from 8 different cities were investigated by IRMS. The results showed that there were significant difference in carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of human hair from different cities. The value of δ13 C was negatively correlated with vegetable consumption per capita. The value of δ15N was positively correlated with meat consumption per capita, and might be increased by high intake of fish. The relationship between δ13C, δ15N and the factors of gender and age demonstrated that there were no significant difference between males and females, but the age of females showed a weakly negative correlation with δ13 C. By comparing the data of this paper and other literatures, the carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes in the hair of residents in China were different from other countries, which implied that there were various dietary habits in different countries. As a representative variety of hypertoxic herbs, aconite has a very high medicinal value but certain security risks. With the advance of urbanization and industrial transfer and upgrading, traditional geo-authentic regions and emerging regions have gradually coexisted. However, there are significant differences in the geographical distribution, ecological environment and growing cycle in these areas, which may cause intraspecific variations in chemical components, and then affect herb quality and clinical efficacy. Furthermore, there was still lack of in-depth study on characteristic constituents of aconite genuineness. In this paper, an UPLC-Q-TOF-MS was used to investigate the chemical ingredients in Jiangyou aconite, Hanzhong aconite, Butuo aconite and Weishan aconite. The results suggested that using unsupervised PCA method, Jiangyou aconite was similar with Hanzhong aconite in chemical ingredients, but significantly different from ones in emerging regions. Using PLS-DA method, seven characteristic constituents were identified, in which Butuo aconite and Weishan aconite had higher contents of mesaconitine and fuziline, while Jiangyou aconite and Hanzhong aconite had higher contents of hypaconitine, neoline, carmichaeline, and songorine. Based on basic toxicity of each ingredient, we can find that hypaconitine and mesaconitine were the key toxicity factors to distinguish Jiangyou aconite, Butuo aconite, and Weishan aconite. The toxicity of geo-authentic Jiangyou aconite was lower than that of Butuo aconite and Weishan aconite. The lower toxicity in geo-authentic Jiangyou aconite was beneficial for ensuring clinical drug safety, which may be one of the important reasons for the formation of genuine aconite. Over the last decade, isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) using up to 5 light stable isotopes (13C/12C, 2H/1H, 15N/14N, 18O/16O, 34S/32S) has become more widely applied for food origin verification as well as food authentication in China. IRMS technology is increasingly used to authenticate a range of food products including organic foods, honey, beverages, tea, animal products, fruits, oils, cereals, spices and condiments that are frequently unique to a specific region of China. Compared to other food authenticity and traceability techniques, IRMS has been successfully used to characterize, classify and identify many Chinese food products, reducing fraud and food safety problems and improving consumer trust and confidence. IRMS techniques also provides scientific support to enhance China's strict government regulatory policies. Isotope testing verifies geographical origin labelling of domestic and imported foods, protects and verifies high value foods that are unique to China, and indicates environmentally friendly farming practices such as 'green' or 'organic' methods. This paper summarizes the various information that has been gathered in recent years at the J. Paul Getty Museum and Getty Conservation Institute with regard to the organic constituents of Chinese lacquer formulations. While this summary of materials is by no means comprehensive or complete, it captures the current state of the authors’ knowledge, with the information itself and the bibliography intended to serve as a useful foundation from which further research may proceed. Considerable advances have been made in the last decade in the technique of pyrolysis-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry with thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation using tetramethylammonium hydroxide and in subsequent data interpretation methodologies. These have dramatically improved the sensitivity and specificity of organic analysis. Perhaps equally important, these methodologies are allowing researchers to collaborate much more effectively and to share results that are truly comparable and reproducible. As more researchers participate and collaborate, and as more results are aggregated into shared databases, significant new insights into the methods and materials of Chinese lacquer are sure to follow. Zenghou Yi Tomb (433 BC) in the early Warring States Period of China is a very important archaeological discovery. Lots of lacquerware was unearthed here, typically representative of that from Chu in the Warring States Period. This article presents analyses of the lacquered inner coffin and a lacquered zither from the tomb, and their surface is red lacquer, supplemented by additional black and yellow patterns. Yellow painted lacquerware remains relatively rare from this period and therefore deserves further study. Numerous methods including three-dimensional (3D) video microscopy and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (Py-GC/MS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy as well as enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) were adopted to analyze the lacquer and pigments from the two artifacts. The results of this study reveal that lacquer samples from both the two artifacts have multilayered structures and contained added eggs and oil. The red pigment on the lacquer surface was made of cinnabar mixed with lacquer, the black one was carbon black mixed with lacquer, while the yellow one was pararealgar mixed with gelatin. 21 jet fuel samples collected from different refineries around different regions in China were took as the research objects. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used for qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis. A comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with single quadrupole mass spectrometry ( GC X GC-qMS) equipped with polar-non polar column system can significantly increase the peak capacity, which had obvious advantages in analyzing jet fuel with complex components. Based on percentage response ( the percentage of each peak volume to all peak volumes), the method of F-ratio (the ratio of the average square error between the dataset to the average square error within the dataset) in analysis of variance CANOVA) was used to select feature components of jet fuel samples. The results showed that monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, indane series, tetralin series with number of carbon atoms in the range of C10 -C12 varied greatly between different groups of jet fuel samples. Different methods for determining the threshold of F -ratio were compared, and the Z-score method was finally used to select experimental data, in which case a total of 16 feature components with Z-score were greater than 3 based on the percentage response F-ratio of the samples. Ultimately, combined with the extracted ion current chromatogram (EIC) with m/ z 117-118 or m/z 131-132, the traditional one-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and GCX GC- qMS were compared with effectiveness of separation and analysis of the feature components. The detected peaks were obviously more than t he former, and t he extracted ions in this mass-to-charge ratio range had a certain distinguishing effect on jet fuel samples. This paper provided a method for comprehensive analysis of jet fuel components, and also provided a reference for selecting useful data while preserving t he features of t he largest difference between groups, reducing the large amount of experimental data generated in GCXGC-qMS. Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of crucial molecules in the cGAS-STING signalling pathway and the susceptibility to, induction chemotherapy response of, and prognosis of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in Chinese patients. Methods: Thirteen SNPs of crucial molecules in the cGAS-STING signalling pathway were genotyped in 262 AML patients using the Sequenom MassARRAY system. The associations of SNPs with susceptibility, and induction chemotherapy response were analysed using the chi-square test or Fisher's exact test and univariate binary logistic regression, the connection of SNPs with prognosis of AML was analysed using the log-rank test, and Kaplan–Meier curves were applied for survival estimation. Results: In our study, gene polymorphisms of cGAS-STING signalling pathway molecules could be vitally associated with AML. In the recessive model, the cGAS rs311678 gene polymorphism could be closely related to AML susceptibility (CC vs. TT + TC, odds ratio (OR) = 0.480, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.260–0.889, p = 0.020). Moreover, IKKA rs3808917 might be associated with the WBC count, cGAS rs311678 could be associated with the bone marrow (BM) blast percentage, and NF-κB rs1056890 under codominant and recessive models could be connected with the HGB level. Patients who were STING rs7380272 TT/CT carriers was likely to have higher insensitivity to induction chemotherapy than CC carriers (TT + CT vs. CC, OR = 2.917, 95% CI = 1.073–7.929, p = 0.036). Survival analysis indicated that the IKKB rs3747811 TT genotype might be associated with decreased overall survival (OS) (p < 0.05). Conclusions: SNPs of molecules in the cGAS-STING signalling pathway could be significantly associated with AML. The cGAS rs311678 gene polymorphism could be associated with AML susceptibility, the STING rs7380272 variant might be related to induction chemotherapy response, and IKKB rs3747811 tended to be associated with AML overall survival. Moreover, IKKA rs3808917 could be associated with the WBC count, cGAS rs311678 could be associated with the BM blast percentage, and NF-κB rs1056890 might be related to the HGB level. Worship activities like burning joss paper during the Chinese Hanyi festival is a common, traditional custom in northwest China. However, the pollutants of e.g., soot particles, released from joss paper burning and the corresponding impacts on urban air quality were poorly investigated, which can be a particular concern since these activities are conducted in an uncontrolled manner. In this study, a long time-of-flight (LToF) soot particle aerosol mass spectrometry (SP-AMS) was deployed to characterize the refractory black carbon (rBC) emitted from the joss paper burning, as well as crop residue, coal combustion, and traffic during the Hanyi Festival in mid-November 2020 in the northwestern city of Xi'an in China. Large difference (from <5% to >100%) in the fragmentation patterns (C n +) for the measured rBC from different source emissions were found when compared to the reference Regal Black. Using the receptor model of positive matrix factorization (PMF) with the multilinear engine (ME-2) algorithm, the obtained rBC mass spectra were used as the anchoring profiles to evaluate the emission strengths of different source types to the atmospheric rBC. Our results show that the burning of joss paper accounted for up to 42% of the atmospheric rBC mass, higher than traffic (14–17%), crop residue (10–17%), coal (18–20%) during the Hanyi festival in northwest China. Moreover, we show that the overall air quality can be worsened due to the practice of uncontrolled burning of joss paper during the festival, which is not just confined to the people who do the burning. Although worship activities occur mainly during festival periods, the pollution events contributed by joss paper burning may pose an acute exposure risk for public health. This is particularly important since burning joss paper during worship activities is common in China and most Asian countries with similar traditions. Simple Summary: Targeted therapy for malignant esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains a big challenge for our clinicians. In an effort to search for the vulnerability of ESCC, we applied a high-throughput drug-screening strategy and found that CuET, a copper chelation product of disulfiram, had a strong synergy effect with the JMJD3/UTX inhibitor GSK J4 in treating ESCC in vitro and in vivo. Interestingly, JMJD3/UTX's diagnostic and prognostic value, as well as the underlying mechanisms associated with endoplasmic reticulum stress were revealed. Targeting JMJD3 and UTX in combination with disulfiram has the potential to provide a new safe, effective, and available therapy for ESCC. The alcohol-averse drug disulfiram has been reported to have anti-tumor effects and is well suited for drug combinations. In order to identify potential drug combinations in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), we screened a bioactive compound library with the disulfiram copper chelation product CuET. The Jumonji domain-containing protein 3 (JMJD3) and the ubiquitously transcribed tetratricopeptide repeat protein X-linked (UTX) inhibitor GSK J4 were identified. To further understand the molecular mechanism underlying the efficient drug combination, we applied quantitative mass spectrometry to analyze the signaling pathway perturbation after drug treatment. The data revealed that the synergistic effect of GSK J4 and CuET was due to the interaction among JMJD3 and UTX, which may play important roles in maintaining endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis in tumor cells. Interestingly, our clinical data analysis showed that high expression of JMJD3 and UTX was associated with T stage and worse prognosis of ESCC patients, further supporting the importance of the above findings. Nanfeng orange is a world famous fruits, but its quality changes remarkably with the producing area. The present paper studied the contents of heavy metal mineral elements and microelements in soil planting Nanfeng orange by ICP-MS/ICP-AES and in order to find the dominant factors that affect the quality of Nanfeng orange in soil. The results showed that the contents of B, P, K, Mg and Ca, especially B, P and K were much higher in soil where the quality of Nanfeng orange is palatable than those where Nanfeng orange is unpalatable; but the contents of Fe, Mn, Si, Cu and Zn were lower in soil where the quality of Nanfeng orange is palatable than those where Nanfeng orange is unpalatable. These data indicate that B, P, K, Mg and Ca, especially B, P and K, affect the quality of Nanfeng orange significantly.

Objective: The new technology of tandem mass spectrometry is exerting a significant impact on the diagnostics of inborn metabolic errors, and allows to detect a number of these disorders in a single step. The aim of the present study was to establish a dry blood filter paper method for amino acid and acylcarnitine profiles test using tandem mass spectrometry and to apply the method for selective screening in high risk children with inborn error of metabolism., Method: The study group consisted of 104 high risk cases of inborn error of metabolism from 5 pediatric hospitals in Shanghai and Beijing were tested from November 2002 to June 2003; 77 were males and 27 females, the means age was 4.8 +/- 4.2 years. These patients had mental retardation, slow development, psychological abnormalities, muscle hypotonia, jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly, recurrent vomiting, and convulsion. Laboratory examinations suggested metabolic acidosis, hypoglycemia, hyperammonemia and hyperlactacidemia. Phenylketonuria was excluded in this study by routine phenylalanine screening. The control group consisted of 308 children, 170 males and 138 females. The blood was collected on filter paper, punched and extracted into methanol solution with stable isotope labeled internal standards, then derivatized with butanolic-HCl. After preparation, the samples were analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry (API 2000)., Results: Ten of 104 patients (9.6%) were positive in our selective screening program, including one with tyrosinemia, one with homocystinuria, one with hyperornithinemia, two with methylmalonic acidemia, one with propionic acidemia, one with 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA lyase deficiency, two with medium chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency, and one with carnitine palmitoyl transferase type II deficiency., Conclusion: The authors established a fast, accurate and sensitive tandem mass spectrometry method for amino acid and acylcarnitine profiles analysis, nearly 30 metabolic diseases including amino acid disorders, organic acid disorders and fatty acid oxidation disorders could be detected, most of the diseases that cause death and disability represent preventable entities by early diagnosis and treatment. The results indicated the importance of selective screening for high risk patients with inborn error of metabolism.

The Erlitou site is located at Yanshi City, Henan Province. This site is a large settlement site of Erlitou culture, and it is dated to 3800-3500 a BP. Five kinds of domestic animals, i.e., dogs, pigs, sheep, goats, and cattle were found from the site. In this paper, two problems have emerged in studies involving the estimation of local isotope levels and the distinction of migrants from locals. Tooth enamel samples from 17 domestic animals individuals were analyzed for strontium isotope ratio (Sr/Sr), by the thermal ionization mass spectrometry, including 10 pigs, 5 sheep and 2 cattle. The results show that the mean Sr/Sr ratios of 10 pigs enamel samples were 0.712078, Based on the local strontium isotopes ratio range determined by the mean Sr/Sr ratios ±2 σ of 10 pig enamel samples (0.712256-0.711900), we found that five sheep and one cattle from the Erlitou site fell well outside the local strontium isotopes ratio range and were considered to be non-local. A selective and robust UPLC-MS/MS method has been firstly developed for simultaneous determination of three anti-tumor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (anlotinib, ANL; ceritinib, CER; ibrutinib, IBR) in rat plasma using cost-effective protein precipitation extraction. LC separation was achieved on Waters XBrige C18 column (50 mm × 2.1 mm, 3.5 μm) under gradient conditions in a run time of 5 min. ESI+ was involved through mass spectrometry. Multiple reaction monitoring transitions were at m/z 408.2 → 339.2 for ANL, 558.2 → 433.2 for CER, 441.0 → 138.0 for IBR, 285.0 → 193.1 for diazepam (internal standard), respectively. The optimized method was validated based on US FDA guideline, EMEA guideline as well as Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China. The assay was linear in the range of 0.1–20 ng mL−1 for ANL, 2–1000 ng mL−1 for CER, 1–500 ng mL−1 for IBR. Intra- and inter-day accuracy and precision for all analytes were ≤13.84% and ≤12.56%, respectively. ANL, CER and IBR were sufficiently stable under most investigated conditions. The optimized method was successfully applied for a pharmacokinetic study after single oral gavage administration of mixture (ANL, CER and IBR) at dose of 6 mg kg−1, 25 mg kg−1 and 10 mg kg−1. Six new neolignans, sinensiols B-G (1–6), together with three known analogues (7–9) were isolated from the whole plant of Selaginella sinensis. Their planar structures were established by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses including 1D, 2D NMR, IR and HRESIMS data. The absolute configurations of new compounds were elucidated by comparing their experimental CD spectra with known ones and using the reversed helicity rule for the 1L b band ECD of dihydrobenzofuran neolignans. Sinensiols A-D (7 , 1–3) belong to sesquilignan with a dimer of dihydrobenzo[ b ]furan moiety. The potential precursors of sinensiols A, B, D were also reported in this paper. In addition, all new compounds were screened for their cytotoxicity against A549 and HepG2 human cancer cell lines, and they didn't show inhibition on the growth of cancer cells. Abstract (+)-usnic acid (UA) is an active natural phenolic acid ingredient originating from Chinese traditional Tibetan herb. Usnea acid is expected to become a new agent for anticancer and remarkable antitumor. To reveal its metabolic profile, metabolites identification of UA in vivo was studied using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS) in this present study. The chromatographic separation was performed on a C 18 column with a mobile phase consisted of methanol and water with a flow rate of 0.4 ml/min. The mass spectral analysis conducted in a negative electrospray ionization mode combined with information-dependent acquirement technology (IDA) was used to trace all the potential UA metabolites. Several sensitive and specific multiple data-mining techniques especially key product ions (KPIs) filter were applied to hunt and identify metabolites rapidly. As a result, a total of 36 metabolites were detected after oral administration of UA, including 33, 8 and 16 in rat urine, plasma and bile, respectively. These results showed that the probable metabolite pathways of UA were oxidation, reduction, dihydroxylation, glycine conjugation, glucuronide conjugation, N -acetylcysteine conjugation and methylation. It is the first time to elucidate the profile of UA in vivo. These results not only provided the basis of UA pharmacological properties, but also gave the guidance in clinical medication. Moreover, the analysis strategy and methodology proposed in this paper could be widely used in characterization of other phenolic acids metabolites. The potential risk through ingestion of microcystins (MC) in contaminated mollusks has not been well studied. The present paper studied seasonal changes of MC content (determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) in various organs of three species of bivalves (Cristaria plicata, Hyriopsis cumingii, and Lamprotula leai) in Lake Taihu, China, where toxic cyanobacterial blooms occurred. Coinciding with peaks of seston MC (maximum, 5.7 μg/L) and MC in cyanobacterial blooms (maximum, 0.534 mg/g), most organs showed sharp MC peaks during the summer, indicating both fast uptake and fast depuration by bivalves. Because hepatopancreas and intestine had considerably higher MC content than other organs, they are the most dangerous for human consumption. Both the present and previous studies show that the hepatopancreatic MC and total tissue MC often are correlated in various aquatic invertebrates. During the peak of the cyanobacterial blooms, C. plicata had higher hepatopancreatic MC content than the other bivalves, whereas H. cumingii had higher intestinal MC content than the other bivalves. Estimated daily intakes for humans from the consumption of whole tissues of the three bivalves were 0.48 to 0.94 μg MC-LR equivalent/kg body weight (12- to 23.5-fold the tolerable daily intake value proposed by the World Health Organization), which indicates a high risk for humans consuming these bivalves. Insampaedok-san (IS) has traditionally been prescribed as a medication for cold-related symptoms in Northeast Asia, including Korea and China. In this study, we focused on elucidating the molecular mechanism underlying the immunomodulatory activity of IS water extract (ISE) in macrophages. ISE significantly enhanced the levels of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by increasing the expression of inducible NO synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in a dose-dependent manner. ISE, which consists of many herbs, contains a large number of active compounds whose pharmacological targets and mechanisms are complicated. Therefore, network pharmacology analysis was used to predict the potential key components, targets, and mechanisms of ISE as immunomodulators. Subsequently, the network pharmacology results were validated experimentally. Seven key components were identified through HPLC-QTOF-MS. As predicted by the network pharmacology analysis, ISE increased the mRNA expression of Tnf and Il6. Furthermore, ISE increased the phosphorylation, nuclear translocation, and transcriptional activity of the p65 subunit of the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway. In contrast, rapamycin, an NF-κB inhibitor, suppressed the ISE-induced mRNA expression of Tnf and Il6. In conclusion, ISE is an immune activator that can elevate the production of NO, PGE2, and proinflammatory cytokines mediated by NF-κB signaling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fuzhuan brick tea, a distinctive dark tea fermented by microorganisms, is a traditional beverage in China throughout history. Recently, it has attracted considerable attention owing to its unique quality characteristics and potential health benefits. The aim of this study was to establish a method for the quality control of Fuzhuan brick tea for stable production. Ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time‐of‐flight tandem mass spectrometry was used to identify Fuzhuan brick tea, and the major components were chosen for further quantitative analysis. Subsequently, a quantification method was developed using ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple‐quadrupole mass spectrometry, and its reliability was verified through methodological validation. Finally, a total of 30 compounds were identified, including catechins, flavonoids, alkaloids, and fatty acids. The established method was reliable for methodological validation and was applied to the quantitative analysis of Fuzhuan brick tea. 1. YR-1702, a hybrid l/j/d receptor agonist, is modified from the traditional opioid analgesic dezocine. It had shown both excellent analgesic effect and lower addiction in phase I clinical trial in China, however, the metabolic pathway of YR-1702 in humans remains unelucidated. 2. The goals of this study are to characterise the metabolism of YR-1702 in human liver microsomes (HLMs) and patients with chronic non-cancer pain by high performance liquid chromatographycoupled with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS). 3. The results showed that a total of twelve metabolites were identified in HLMs, in which 7, 6 and 5 metabolites were also found in human plasma, urine and feces, respectively. And the major metabolic pathways include mono-hydroxylation, di-hydroxylation, dehydrogenation and glucuronidation. The locations of hydroxylation and dehydrogenation were identified by the signature fragments of the metabolites. 4. The relative contents of the metabolites in human plasma were also evaluated, in which the main metabolite M1 notably accounting for more than 14% of the total drug exposure. In this study, a Tara thangka (from a complete set of 21) dating to the mid-Qing Dynasty (1776–1839 CE) at Daxingshan Temple in Xi'an, Shaanxi, China was analyzed using various techniques, including portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (p-XRF), Raman spectroscopy (RS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), optical microscopy (OM), and mass spectrometry-based proteomics. Through a multi-analytical methodology, in situ non-invasive testing was complemented with an analysis of a limited number of samples. By complementary evidence derived from the above analyses, it can be determined that the thangka was painted on a hemp substrate, with common colorants such as cinnabar, orpiment, gold, azurite, and malachite, and porcine glue as binding material. These results provided important scientific data for the production crafts of the precious Tara thangkas, contributing to the revelation of its value in art history and enabling conservators to make informed conservation decisions.
