Multi-epoch very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations measure three-dimensional water maser motions in protostellar outflows, enabling analysis of inclination and velocity. However, these analyses assume that water masers and shock surfaces within outflows are co-propagating. We compare VLBI data on maser-traced bow shocks in the high-mass protostar AFGL 5142-MM1, from seven epochs of archival data from the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA), obtained from 2014 April to 2015 May, and our newly conducted data from the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA), obtained in 2016 March. We find an inconsistency between the expected displacement of the bow shocks and the motions of individual masers. The separation between two opposing bow shocks in AFGL 5142-MM1 was determined to be 337.17 ± 0.07 mas in the KaVA data, which is less than an expected value of 342.1 ± 0.7 mas based on extrapolation of the proper motions of individual maser features measured by VERA. Our measurements imply that the bow shock propagates at a velocity of 24 ± 3 km s−1, while the individual masing gas clumps move at an average velocity of 55 ± 5 km s−1; that is ,the water masers are moving in the outflow direction at double the speed at which the bow shocks are propagating. Our results emphasize that investigations of individual maser features are best approached using short-term high-cadence VLBI monitoring, while long-term monitoring on timescales comparable to the lifetimes of maser features is better suited to tracing the overall evolution of shock surfaces. This paper describes an overview of the FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/H2O-maser Ignitions by the Nobeyama Generation) project promoted using the 45 m telescope of Nobeyama Radio Observatory, which aims to intensively monitor H2O (at 22 GHz) and SiO (at 43 GHz) masers associated with so-called "water fountain" sources. Here we show scientific results based on the data taken in the first five seasons of FLASHING, from 2018 December to 2023 April. We show the evolution of the H2O maser spectra, discovering new spectral components that break the record of the jet's top speed and/or systematic velocity drifts in the spectrum indicating acceleration or deceleration of the maser gas clumps. For the 43 GHz SiO maser emission, we newly detect it in one source and find that it is no longer present in another source. This implies that the jets from these water fountains can be accelerated or decelerated, and show how circumstellar envelopes are destroyed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The results of astrometric very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations toward an extreme OH/IR star candidate NSV 17351 are presented. Using the VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) VLBI array , we observed 22 GHz H2O masers of NSV 17351 and derived an annual parallax of 0.247 ± 0.035 mas, which corresponds to a distance of 4.05 ± 0.59 kpc, from the observation. By averaging proper motions of 15 maser spots further, we determined the systemic proper motion of NSV 17351 to be (μαcos δ, μδ)avg. = (−1.19 ± 0.11, 1.30 ± 0.19) mas yr−1. The maser spots spread out over a region of 20 × 30 mas, which can be converted to a spatial distribution of ∼80 × 120 au at the source distance. Internal motions of the maser spots suggest an outward-moving maser region with respect to the estimated position of the central star. From single-dish monitoring of the H2O maser emission, we estimate the pulsation period of NSV 17351 to be 1122 ± 24 d. This is the first report of the periodic activity of NSV 17351, indicating that NSV 17351 could have a mass of ∼4  M ⊙. We confirmed that the time variation of H2O masers can be used as a period estimator of variable OH/IR stars. Furthermore, by inspecting dozens of double-peaked H2O maser spectra for the last 40 years, we discovered the long-term acceleration in the radial velocity of the circumstellar matter to be 0.17 ± 0.03 km s−1 yr−1. We finally determined the position and kinematics in the Milky Way Galaxy and found that NSV 17351 is located in an interarm region between the Outer and Perseus arms. We aim to reveal properties of evolution stages in AGB phase; Mira, OH/IR stars, and non-variable OH/IR stars. We presented results of our VLBI observations of four stars; NSV17351, OH39.7+1.5, IRC–30363, and AW Tau. We used the VERA VLBI array to observe 22 GHz H2O masers. Parallaxes of the four sources were obtained to be 0.247±0.035 mas (4.05±0.59 kpc), 0.54±0.03 mas (1.85±0.10 kpc), 0.562±0.201 mas (1.78±0.73 kpc), and 0.449±0.032 mas (2.23±0.16 kpc). Determination of pulsation period of NSV17351 was done for the first time. We revealed the position and kinematics of NSV17351 in our Galaxy and found that NSV17351 is located in an interarm region. A new period-magnitude relationship was indicated in the infrared region. Various other properties based on the distance measurements are also discussed. We have to emphasize that the VLBI astrometry is effective and the only way for parallax measurements of dust obscured OH/IR stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the spectral and spatial evolution of H2O masers associated with IRAS 18043–2116, a well-known water fountain hosting a high-velocity collimated jet, which has been found in the observations with the 45 m telescope of Nobeyama Radio Observatory and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We found new highest velocity components of the H2O masers, with which the resulting velocity spread of ≃ 540 km s−1 breaks the speed record of fast jets/outflows in this type of sources. We have investigated the spectral evolutions of H2O and SiO masers associated with 12 "water fountain" sources in our FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/H2O-maser Ignitions by Nobeyama Generation) project. Our monitoring observations have been conducted using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope every 2 weeks–2 months since 2018 December except during summer seasons. We have found new extremely high velocity H2O maser components, breaking the records of jet speeds in this type of sources. Systematic line-of-sight velocity drifts of the H2O maser spectral peaks have also been found, indicating acceleration of the entrained material hosting the masers around the jet. Moreover, by comparing with previous spectral data, we can find decadal growths/decays of H2O maser emission. Possible periodic variations of the maser spectra are further being inspected in order to explore the periodicity of the central stellar system (a pulsating star or a binary). We present astrometric very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) studies of AGB stars. To understand the properties and evolution of AGB stars, distances are an important parameter. The distribution and kinematics of their circumstellar matter are also revealed with the VLBI method. We used the VERA array to observe 22 GHz H2O masers in various subclasses of AGB stars. Parallaxes of the three OH/IR stars NSV17351, OH39.7+1.5, IRC−30363, and the Mira-type variable star AW Tau were newly obtained. We present the circumstellar distribution and kinematics of H2O masers around NSV17351. The absolute magnitudes in mid-infrared bands of OH/IR stars with very long pulsation periods were investigated and a period-magnitude relation in the WISE W3 band, M W3 = (−7.21 ± 1.18) log P + (9.25 ± 3.09), was found for the Galactic AGB stars. The VLBI is still a powerful tool for parallax measurements of the Galactic AGB stars surrounded by thick dust shells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report new detections of SiO ν = 1 and ν = 2 J = 1 → 0 masers in the "water fountain" source IRAS 16552-3050, which was observed with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope from March 2021 to April 2023. Water fountains are evolved stars whose H2O maser spectra trace high-velocity outflows of >100 Km s−. This is the second known case of SiO masers in a water fountain, after their prototypical source, W 43A. The line-of-sight velocity of the SiO masers are blue-shifted by ∼25 km s−1 from the systemic velocity. This velocity offset imply that the SiO masers are associated with nozzle structure formed by a jet penetrating the circumstellar envelope, and that new gas blobs of the jet erupted recently. We discovered new high-velocity components of H2O maser emission in one of the "water fountain" sources, IRAS 18286−0959, which has been monitored using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope in the FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO- and H2O-maser Ignitions by Nobeyama Generation) project since 2018 December. The maser spectra show new components with extremely high expansion velocities (>200 km s−1 projected in the line of sight), some of which are located symmetrically in the spectrum with respect to the systemic velocity. They were also mapped with KaVA (KVN and VERA Combined Array) in 2019 March. We located some of these maser components closer to the central stellar system than other high-velocity components (50–200 km s−1) that have been confirmed to be associated with the known bipolar outflow. The new components would have flashed in the fast collimated jet at a speed of over 300 km s−1 (soon) after 2011 when they had not been detected. The fastest of the new components seem to indicate rapid deceleration in these spectra; however, our present monitoring is still too sparse to unambiguously confirm it (up to 50 km s−1 yr−1) and too short to reveal their terminal expansion velocity, which will be equal to the expansion velocity that has been observed (⁠|$v$| exp ∼ 120 km s−1). Future occurrences of such extreme-velocity components may provide a good opportunity to investigate possible recurrent outflow ignitions. Thus, the sculpture of the parental envelope will be traced by the dense gas that is entrained by the fast jet and exhibits spectacular distributions of the relatively stable maser features. We briefly introduce the VLBI maser astrometric analysis of IRAS 18043–2116 and IRAS 18113–2503, two remarkable and unusual water fountains with spectacular bipolar bow shocks in their high-speed collimated jet-driven outflows. The 22 GHz H2O maser structures and velocities clearly show that the jets are formed in very short-lived, episodic outbursts, which may indicate episodic accretion in an underlying binary system.
