We conducted a field test at a potential Mars analog site to provide insight into planning for future robotic missions such as Mars 2020, where science operations must facilitate efficient choice of biologically relevant sampling locations. We compared two data acquisition and decision-making protocols currently used by Mars Science Laboratory: (1) a linear approach, where sites are examined as they are encountered and (2) a walkabout approach, in which the field site is first examined with remote rover instruments to gain an understanding of regional context followed by deployment of time- and power-intensive contact and sampling instruments on a smaller subset of locations. The walkabout method was advantageous in terms of both the time required to execute and a greater confidence in results and interpretations, leading to enhanced ability to tailor follow-on observations to better address key science and sampling goals. This advantage is directly linked to the walkabout method's ability to provide broad geological context earlier in the science analysis process. The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover conducted a reconnaissance traverse across the Pahrump Hills outcrop within Gale crater from Sols 780–797. During the traverse, the Mars Descent Imager (MARDI) acquired a continuous imaging record of primary and secondary sedimentary features throughout the outcrop. The characteristics of the features (laminae, resistant features, fractures, gray clasts) and their spatial distribution provide insight into the processes that contributed to the formation of Pahrump Hills. Thin, regular laminae (mm-scale) are ubiquitous in the bedrock, implying that depositional processes at that scale did not change appreciably during deposition of the mudstone succession at Pahrump Hills. Higher bedrock slopes correlate with undulatory bedrock surfaces, bedrock with elevated Mg contents, and fractures exhibiting wide, raised edges. These collective features are consistent with increased erosional resistance caused by greater quantities of erosionally-resistant, Mg-bearing cement within the bedrock permitted by coarser grain sizes. Resistant features exhibit a range of morphologies, elevated Mg contents, and do not deflect laminae within the bedrock. Their characteristics implicate the involvement of Mg-enriched fluids in a late diagenetic overprint affecting the bedrock. The variations of fracture fill and edge morphologies and chemistries further suggest repeated fracturing and fluid interaction events within the strata exposed at Pahrump Hills. Gray clasts strongly resemble fragments eroded from sandstone horizons interspersed throughout the Pahrump Hills outcrop.

The Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman and Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals (SHERLOC) is a robotic arm-mounted instrument on NASA’s Perseverance rover. SHERLOC has two primary boresights. The Spectroscopy boresight generates spatially resolved chemical maps using fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy coupled to microscopic images (10.1 μm/pixel). The second boresight is a Wide Angle Topographic Sensor for Operations and eNgineering (WATSON); a copy of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) that obtains color images from microscopic scales (∼13 μm/pixel) to infinity. SHERLOC Spectroscopy focuses a 40 μs pulsed deep UV neon-copper laser (248.6 nm), to a ∼100 μm spot on a target at a working distance of ∼48 mm. Fluorescence emissions from organics, and Raman scattered photons from organics and minerals, are spectrally resolved with a single diffractive grating spectrograph with a spectral range of 250 to ∼370 nm. Because the fluorescence and Raman regions are naturally separated with deep UV excitation (−1 (250 to 273 nm) and the fluorescence region (274 to ∼370 nm) are acquired simultaneously without time gating or additional mechanisms. SHERLOC science begins by using an Autofocus Context Imager (ACI) to obtain target focus and acquire 10.1 μm/pixel greyscale images. Chemical maps of organic and mineral signatures are acquired by the orchestration of an internal scanning mirror that moves the focused laser spot across discrete points on the target surface where spectra are captured on the spectrometer detector. ACI images and chemical maps (< 100 μm/mapping pixel) will enable the first Mars in situ view of the spatial distribution and interaction between organics, minerals, and chemicals important to the assessment of potential biogenicity (containing CHNOPS). Single robotic arm placement chemical maps can cover areas up to 7x7 mm in area and, with the < 10 min acquisition time per map, larger mosaics are possible with arm movements. This microscopic view of the organic geochemistry of a target at the Perseverance field site, when combined with the other instruments, such as Mastcam-Z, PIXL, and SuperCam, will enable unprecedented analysis of geological materials for both scientific research and determination of which samples to collect and cache for Mars sample return.

Geochronology, or determination of absolute ages for geologic events, underpins many inquiries into the formation and evolution of planets and our Solar System. Absolute ages of ancient and recent magmatic products provide strong constraints on the dynamics of magma oceans and crustal formation, as well as the longevity and evolution of interior heat engines and distinct mantle/crustal source regions. Absolute dating also relates habitability markers to the timescale of evolution of life on Earth. However, the number of geochronologically-significant terrains across the inner Solar System far exceeds our ability to conduct sample return from all of them. In preparation for the upcoming Decadal Survey, our team formulated a set of medium-class (New Frontiers) mission concepts to three different locations (the Moon, Mars, and Vesta) where sites that record Solar System bombardment, magmatism, and/or habitability are uniquely preserved and accessible. We developed a notional payload to directly date planetary surfaces, consisting of two instruments capable of measuring radiometric ages in situ, an imaging spectrometer, optical cameras to provide site geologic context and sample characterization, a trace element analyzer to augment sample contextualization, and a sample acquisition and handling system. Landers carrying this payload to the Moon, Mars, and Vesta would likely fit into the New Frontiers cost cap in our study (~$1B). A mission of this type would provide crucial constraints on planetary history while also enabling a broad suite of investigations such as basic geologic characterization, geomorphologic analysis, ground truth for remote sensing analyses, analyses of major, minor, trace, and volatile elements, atmospheric and other long-lived monitoring, organic molecule analyses, and soil and geotechnical properties., Comment: Submitted to the Planetary Science Journal, October 2020

Stack, K. et al., The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover landing site is located within Jezero crater, a ∼50km diameter impact crater interpreted to be a Noachian-aged lake basin inside the western edge of the Isidis impact structure. Jezero hosts remnants of a fluvial delta, inlet and outlet valleys, and infill deposits containing diverse carbonate, mafic, and hydrated minerals. Prior to the launch of the Mars 2020 mission, members of the Science Team collaborated to produce a photogeologic map of the Perseverance landing site in Jezero crater. Mapping was performed at a 1:5000 digital map scale using a 25 cm/pixel High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) orthoimage mosaic base map and a 1 m/pixel HiRISE stereo digital terrain model. Mapped bedrock and surficial units were distinguished by differences in relative brightness, tone, topography, surface texture, and apparent roughness. Mapped bedrock units are generally consistent with those identified in previously published mapping efforts, but this study’s map includes the distribution of surficial deposits and sub-units of the Jezero delta at a higher level of detail than previous studies. This study considers four possible unit correlations to explain the relative age relationships of major units within the map area. Unit correlations include previously published interpretations as well as those that consider more complex interfingering relationships and alternative relative age relationships. The Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) is a 2-megapixel, color camera with resolution as high as 13.9 µm pixel−1. MAHLI has operated successfully on the Martian surface for over 1150 Martian days (sols) aboard the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover, Curiosity. During that time MAHLI acquired images to support science and science-enabling activities, including rock and outcrop textural analysis; sand characterization to further the understanding of global sand properties and processes; support of other instrument observations; sample extraction site documentation; range-finding for arm and instrument placement; rover hardware and instrument monitoring and safety; terrain assessment; landscape geomorphology; and support of rover robotic arm commissioning. Operation of the instrument has demonstrated that imaging fully illuminated, dust-free targets yields the best results, with complementary information obtained from shadowed images. The light-emitting diodes (LEDs) allow satisfactory night imaging but do not improve daytime shadowed imaging. MAHLI's combination of fine-scale, science-driven resolution, RGB color, the ability to focus over a large range of distances, and relatively large field of view (FOV), have maximized the return of science and science-enabling observations given the MSL mission architecture and constraints.

The Mars Science Laboratory Mast camera and Descent Imager investigations were designed, built, and operated by Malin Space Science Systems of San Diego, CA. They share common electronics and focal plane designs but have different optics. There are two Mastcams of dissimilar focal length. The Mastcam‐34 has an f/8, 34 mm focal length lens, and the M‐100 an f/10, 100 mm focal length lens. The M‐34 field of view is about 20° × 15° with an instantaneous field of view (IFOV) of 218 μrad; the M‐100 field of view (FOV) is 6.8° × 5.1° with an IFOV of 74 μrad. The M‐34 can focus from 0.5 m to infinity, and the M‐100 from ~1.6 m to infinity. All three cameras can acquire color images through a Bayer color filter array, and the Mastcams can also acquire images through seven science filters. Images are ≤1600 pixels wide by 1200 pixels tall. The Mastcams, mounted on the ~2 m tall Remote Sensing Mast, have a 360° azimuth and ~180° elevation field of regard. Mars Descent Imager is fixed‐mounted to the bottom left front side of the rover at ~66 cm above the surface. Its fixed focus lens is in focus from ~2 m to infinity, but out of focus at 66 cm. The f/3 lens has a FOV of ~70° by 52° across and along the direction of motion, with an IFOV of 0.76 mrad. All cameras can acquire video at 4 frames/second for full frames or 720p HD at 6 fps. Processes, environments, and the energy associated with the transport and deposition of sand at Gusev Crater are characterized at the microscopic scale through the comparison of statistical moments for particle size and shape distributions. Bivariate and factor analyses define distinct textural groups at 51 sites along the traverse completed by the Spirit rover as it crossed the plains and went into the Columbia Hills. Fine-to-medium sand is ubiquitous in ripples and wind drifts. Most distributions show excess fine material, consistent with a predominance of wind erosion over the last 3.8 billion years. Negative skewness at West Valley is explained by the removal of fine sand during active erosion, or alternatively, by excess accumulation of coarse sand from a local source. The coarse to very coarse sand particles of ripple armors in the basaltic plains have a unique combination of size and shape. Their distribution display significant changes in their statistical moments within the ~400 m that separate the Columbia Memorial Station from Bonneville Crater. Results are consistent with aeolian and/or impact deposition, while the elongated and rounded shape of the grains forming the ripples, as well as their direction of origin, could point to Ma'adim Vallis as a possible source. For smaller particles on the traverse, our findings confirm that aeolian processes have dominated over impact and other processes to produce sands with the observed size and shape patterns across a spectrum of geologic (e.g., ripples and plains soils) and aerographic settings (e.g., wind shadows).

We describe preliminary results from the first 100 sols of ground temperature measurements along the Mars Science Laboratory's traverse from Bradbury Landing to Rocknest in Gale. The ground temperature data show long-term increases in mean temperature that are consistent with seasonal evolution. Deviations from expected temperature trends within the diurnal cycle are observed and may be attributed to rover and environmental effects. Fits to measured diurnal temperature amplitudes using a thermal model suggest that the observed surfaces have thermal inertias in the range of 265–375 J m−2 K−1 s−1/2, which are within the range of values determined from orbital measurements and are consistent with the inertias predicted from the observed particle sizes on the uppermost surface near the rover. Ground temperatures at Gale Crater appear to warm earlier and cool later than predicted by the model, suggesting that there are multiple unaccounted for physical conditions or processes in our models. Where the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) descent engines removed a mobile layer of dust and fine sediments from over rockier material, the diurnal temperature profile is closer to that expected for a homogeneous surface, suggesting that the mobile materials on the uppermost surface may be partially responsible for the mismatch between observed temperatures and those predicted for materials having a single thermal inertia. Models of local stratigraphy also implicate thermophysical heterogeneity at the uppermost surface as a potential contributor to the observed diurnal temperature cycle.

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) investigation will use a 2-megapixel color camera with a focusable macro lens aboard the rover, Curiosity, to investigate the stratigraphy and grain-scale texture, structure, mineralogy, and morphology of geologic materials in northwestern Gale crater. Of particular interest is the stratigraphic record of a ∼5 km thick layered rock sequence exposed on the slopes of Aeolis Mons (also known as Mount Sharp). The instrument consists of three parts, a camera head mounted on the turret at the end of a robotic arm, an electronics and data storage assembly located inside the rover body, and a calibration target mounted on the robotic arm shoulder azimuth actuator housing. MAHLI can acquire in-focus images at working distances from ∼2.1 cm to infinity. At the minimum working distance, image pixel scale is ∼14 μm per pixel and very coarse silt grains can be resolved. At the working distance of the Mars Exploration Rover Microscopic Imager cameras aboard Spirit and Opportunity, MAHLI’s resolution is comparable at ∼30 μm per pixel. Onboard capabilities include autofocus, auto-exposure, sub-framing, video imaging, Bayer pattern color interpolation, lossy and lossless compression, focus merging of up to 8 focus stack images, white light and longwave ultraviolet (365 nm) illumination of nearby subjects, and 8 gigabytes of non-volatile memory data storage.

The composition and detailed morphology of dome-shaped features located in western Arcadia Planitia and just west of Utopia Planitia were examined in this study utilizing data from Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and Mars Odyssey sensors. The domes have diameters averaging 1.5 km and heights averaging 160 m, and are generally dark-toned, although some are lighter toned or have split dark and light-toned surfaces. The domes are surrounded by annular deposits comprising, with increasing distance from the domes, dark-toned aprons, light-toned aureoles, and dark-toned aureoles. Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) data over several areas in the western Arcadia region show that spectra from the flanks of several domes have 1 and 2 μm absorption features consistent with the presence of olivine and a high-Ca pyroxene, nominally augite. Modified Gaussian Model (MGM) analysis of these spectra indicates Fe-rich olivine compositions. The tops of domes and the aprons surrounding many domes have negative sloping flat spectra in the near infrared, which is consistent with tachylite-rich, glassy compositions. High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) images over several domes indicate that relatively high thermal inertia values associated with the tops of domes can be attributed to boulder strewn surfaces. HiRISE images also reveal that light-toned aureoles around domes consist of crenulated ground resembling “brain terrain” textures previously described for ice-rich concentric crater fill elsewhere on the northern plains. The plains surrounding the domes also display lineations that are interpreted to be lava channels or tubes. The combination of volcanic and ice-related features are consistent with the domes having formed as cryptodomes in the near sub-surface. We suggest that the domes could be basaltic in composition if the magmas were degassed and/or highly crystallized, and thus more viscous than typical basaltic magmas. The intrusion of these magmas into an ice-rich horizon would have produced a pervasively jointed chilled margin on the domes, which, once the domes were exposed, would have mechanically weathered to form the dark aprons. The domes could have served as local centers for ice accumulation during periods of high orbital obliquity, which ultimately would have led to the formation of the “brain terrain” surrounding the features. The domes represent late stage volcanic products on the northern plains of Mars and associated features provide more evidence for the role that ice accumulation and modification has played in recent martian history.

International audience; The Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) on the Mars Science Laboratory's Curiosity rover began making detailed measurements of the cosmic ray and energetic particle radiation environment on the surface of Mars on 7 August 2012. We report and discuss measurements of the absorbed dose and dose equivalent from galactic cosmic rays and solar energetic particles on the martian surface for similar to 300 days of observations during the current solar maximum. These measurements provide insight into the radiation hazards associated with a human mission to the surface of Mars and provide an anchor point with which to model the subsurface radiation environment, with implications for microbial survival times of any possible extant or past life, as well as for the preservation of potential organic biosignatures of the ancient martian environment.

The Robotic Arm Camera (RAC) is a panchromatic imager included as part of the Mars Volatiles and Climate Surveyor (MVACS) science experiment on Mars Polar Lander and on the Mars 2001 lander. It is designed to take both panoramic and microscopic images in order to gather data on the morphology and mineralogy of surface materials. In order to demonstrate these capabilities, a field test was conducted at Silver Lake playa in the Mojave Desert. The test consisted of going to a remote site unknown to the science team and providing that team with a data set of RAC panoramic, anaglyph, and microscopic images similar to what would be available during an actual landing. With only this information the science team attempted a determination of the position and the geology of the field test site. Using panoramic and anaglyph images provided by RAC, in conjunction with overflight images simulating data from a descent camera, the landing site for the field test was determined within 50 m of the actual site as lying near both a playa and an alluvial fan. Images of samples from the surface and within the trench revealed grain morphology, texture, and mineralogy indicating a soil dominated by quartz and feldspar, interspersed with a minor mafic component. Grain-size distribution was bimodal, with small, rounded to subrounded grains dominant at lower depths and larger, more angular grains more plentiful near the surface. This mineralogy is confirmed by the geology of the site and the data provided by the descent images and mid-IR measurements. RAC has demonstrated its ability to image the local geology and identify the major mineralogic components of an unknown site. These abilities will be crucial in understanding both the macroscopic and the microscopic geology of future Mars landing sites. This test also has demonstrated the crucial link between RAC data and complementary data sets such as context images and compositional data that can support the mineralogic observations made by RAC.

Mars' Atmosphere from Curiosity The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument on the Curiosity rover that landed on Mars in August last year is designed to study the chemical and isotopic composition of the martian atmosphere. Mahaffy et al. (p. 263 ) present volume-mixing ratios of Mars' five major atmospheric constituents (CO 2 , Ar, N 2 , O 2 , and CO) and isotope measurements of 40 Ar/ 36 Ar and C and O in CO 2 , based on data from one of SAM's instruments, obtained between 31 August and 21 November 2012. Webster et al. (p. 260 ) used data from another of SAM's instruments obtained around the same period to determine isotope ratios of H, C, and O in atmospheric CO 2 and H 2 O. Agreement between the isotopic ratios measured by SAM with those of martian meteorites, measured in laboratories on Earth, confirms the origin of these meteorites and implies that the current atmospheric reservoirs of CO 2 and H 2 O were largely established after the period of early atmospheric loss some 4 billion years ago.

[1] We adapt and test a standard terrestrial technique of assessing morphology quantitatively for use with sites on Mars based on two-dimensional equations and particle outlines, whereby images of particles obtained remotely may yield dimensionless, numerical shape and roundness values consistent with previous knowledge of the lithology and sedimentary transport history. Our test site was the particle-rich Rock Garden at the Mars Pathfinder landing site, a location where the primary geologic processes and lithology have been determined by other means. A total of 575 particles were assessed in terms of size, sphericity, elongation, and roundness; qualitative roundness was determined for 460 particles. Particles are mostly pebble- to cobble-sized and have an average sphericity of 0.75, elongation of 0.63, and relative roundness of 0.083; 69% of particles are subangular or subrounded. Particle sphericity is unimodal, with a size-sphericity profile matching trends for terrestrial populations of similar lithology and elongations nearly identical to those for particles at Vikings 1 and 2. This matches the predictions for a site with the single overall lithology implied from other analyses. Roundness data indicate one or possibly two particle populations, representing the primary processes that likely affected particle roundness most strongly: impact and catastrophic flooding. Finally, we tested a hypothesis suggesting that darker, smaller, more angular particles comprise a population transported through impact cratering, while larger, less dark, more rounded particles are associated with catastrophic flood transport. The opposite result is seen: larger particles throughout the Rock Garden are more angular than smaller ones.

Rover-based 2012 Moon and Mars Analog Mission Activities (MMAMA) scientific investigations were completed at Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Scientific investigations, scientific input, and science operations constraints were tested in the context of an existing project and protocols for the field activities designed to help NASA achieve the Vision for Space Exploration. Four separate science investigations were integrated in a Martian analog environment with initial science operations planned based on a model similar to the operations control of the Mars Exploration Rovers (MER). However, evolution of the operations process occurred during the initial planning sessions and as the analog mission progressed. We review here the overall program of the investigation into the origin of the valley including preliminary sensor data results, an applicable methodology for developing an optimum science input based on productive engineering, and science trades and the science operations approach for an investigation into the valley on the upper slopes of Mauna Kea identified as “Apollo Valley”.
