The presented diploma thesis focuses on the map skills' problematic, which is currently becoming widespread in the Czech research environment. In contrast to the previous empirical studies, this thesis is devoted to the thematic map skills and their level of development among students of grammar schools and geographically oriented branches of university studies. Due to the significant differences between used cartographic methods of visualization on thematic maps the main aim of this diploma thesis is to identify and explain used cartographic method's influence on the level of these important skills. To achieve this aim, it was necessary to focus on different parts of the curriculum (intended, implemented, learned) and to use several scientific methods because this topic hasn't been well established yet and therefore only few theoretical and empirical studies dealt with this specific issue. The thesis focuses on one of the map skills - map interpretation. The aim of the thesis is to characterize the process of solving tasks aimed at the interpretation of two types of thematic maps (chloropleth mapping and area-shading mapping) by students of final year high school and first year university. In the theoretical part of the thesis, map skills - reading, analysis, interpretation and map making - are characterized. Further, the concept of mapwork strategies is defined and the basis for determining these strategies is described. The thesis also discusses the application of eye-tracking technology in research aimed at investigating map skills. The characteristics of the two thematic cartography methods used in the experiment within this thesis - chloropleth mapping and area-shading mapping, are also described. The experiment conducted within this thesis was carried out on a sample of 19 participants. These participants completed, using eye-tracking technology, a didactic test containing tasks on the interpretation of thematic maps. This bachelor's thesis examines textbook tasks designed for the development of map skills. The purpose of the thesis is to determine whether, how often, and in what manner are Geography textbooks and textbook tasks utilized by teachers for the development of map skills in pupils in lower secondary education. The thesis also analyses teachers' assessment of the way textbooks and textbook tasks aimed at map skills are designed. The theoretical basis of the thesis explains the role and function of textbooks within teaching. The current state of Czech research on textbooks is introduced along with prospects for its further development. This is followed by the defining of what didactic textbook tasks are and what their purpose is. The thesis also addresses the determination of specific types of map skills (reading, analysis, interpretation, mapmaking) and gives a description of "models of map skills". Furthermore, it is explained how Geography textbooks can contribute to the development of map skills. In the subsequent part of the thesis, the findings of a questionnaire survey are presented. The results indicate that the majority of teachers actively use textbooks not only in lesson preparation but also in lessons as such. The presented thesis focuses on the creation of an educational game, as a mean for teaching cartography in lower secondary education. The game serves as a tool for preventing a formation of misconceptions related to cartography and for developing map skills of pupils in lower secondary schools The bachelor thesis also includes a review of literature focused on teaching cartography on lower secondary education, especially focused on cartography in curricular documents, map skills and misconceptions in cartography. Moreover, an integral part of the thesis is the methodology of creating the educational game specialized in cartography teaching and thorough description of the individual components of the game.
