Se analizó el contenido de nutrimentos totales y disponibles, el Al total e intercambiable y el pH de cuatro muestras de gallinaza, (dos frescas y dos de 2 y 24 meses). El contenido total de N en la gallinaza de 24 meses fue de 2.47%; sin embargo, en la gallinaza fresca y en la de 2 meses sobrepaso el 3%. El contenido total de Mg y Al fue mayor en la gallinaza de 2 y 24 meses, pero no hubo aumento en las fracciones intercambiables de estos dos cationes. Todo el K presente en la gallinaza se encuentra en forma intercambiable. Se observo un aumento significativo en el P disponible en la gallinaza de 2 y 24 meses al compararla con las dos muestras frescas. Esta fracción de P representó un valor medio de 9% del P total en la gallinaza fresca, 67% en la de dos meses y 97% en la de 24 meses. El Ca intercambiable fluctuó entre 1,558 y 5,200 p/m y el Mg entre 750 y 1,863 p/m. No se observó ninguna relación entre la fracción intercambiable (disponible) de estos elementos y la edad del material.

A field experiment was conducted during Kharif 2017 at ZARS, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru to study the influence of different levels of Farm Yard Manure (FYM) and Jeevamrutha on growth and yield of Sunflower in red sandy loam soil. There were nine treatment combinations laid out in factorial randomized complete block design, which were replicated thrice. The experimental results revealed that, the application of FYM at 150 per cent nitrogen equivalent and jeevamrutha at 1500 L ha-1significantly influenced growth parameters like plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, leaf area index and total dry matter production. The interaction effect of FYM and jeevamrutha was significant in enhancing the seed yield of sunflower due to improvement in yield attributes like head diameter, number of seeds per head, hundred seed weight and seed yield per plant.

Manure is a common source of nitrogen (N) in organic farming. However, manure is not always easily available, while the maximum N amount added as animal manure in organic agriculture is restricted by EU regulations. The present study was designed to test whether green manuring with a warm-season legume and intercropping with a cold-season legume can substitute farm-yard manure or compost as N sources in organic greenhouse tomato crops. To test this hypothesis, a winter-spring (WS) tomato crop was installed in February following the incorporation of crop residues of an autumn-winter (AW) tomato crop intercropped with faba bean, which had been fertilized with cowpea residues as green manure. This treatment, henceforth termed legume treatment (LT), was compared with the use of compost or manure as an N fertilization source in both tomato crops. In addition, a combination of compost and LT was also used as a fourth treatment. The results showed that green manuring with legumes and particularly cowpea can contribute a significant amount of N to the following organic tomato crop, through the biological fixation process. Nevertheless, legumes as green manure, or compost, or their combination cannot efficiently replace farmyard manure as an N fertilization source. Compost exhibited a slow mineralization course.

Cotton crop, plays a significant role in Pakistan’s economy by ruling a prominent place in edible oil and local textile industry. Phosphorus (P) inaccessibility and deficiency of soil organic matter are the key restraints for low crop productivity in cotton. Therefore, a two years field study was designed during 2014-15, to explore the influence of phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB), farmyard manure (FYM), poultry manure (PM) and inanimate sources of P on various physiological, growth, yield and quality parameters of cotton crop at CCRI Multan. Field responses of seeds inoculated with two distinctive phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) strains viz. S0 = control, S1 =strain-1, S2 = strain-2 and eight organic, inorganic P sources viz., P0= control, P1 = 80 kg ha-1 P from inorganic source, P2 = 80 kg ha-1 P from FYM, P3 = 80 kg ha-1 P from PM, P4 = 40 kg ha-1 P from FYM + 40 kg ha-1 P from inorganic source, P5 = 40 kg ha-1 P from PM + 40 kg ha-1 P from inorganic source, P6 = 80 kg ha-1 P from FYM + 40 kg ha-1 P from inorganic source, P7 = 80 kg ha-1 P from PM + 40 kg ha-1 P from inorganic source and P8 = 40 kg ha-1 P from FYM + 40 kg ha-1 P from PM were evaluated. Results revealed that inoculation of seeds with PSB and collective use of inorganic and organic sources of P had considerably increased the yield contributing attributes in cotton. However, the treatment P7 (80 kg P ha-1 from PM + 40 kg P ha-1 from inorganic source) in coincidence with seeds inoculated with PSB (S1) produced taller plant, maximum boll weight, significantly higher LAI and CGR. Significantly higher seed cotton yield, lint yield, fiber length and maximum BCR of 1.95 and 1.81 was also obtained from the P7 treatment during both crop-growing seasons. In conclusion, combined use of 80 kg P ha-1 from PM + 40 kg P ha-1 from inorganic source and cotton seeds inoculated with strain-1 improved phosphorus uptake ensuing in greater consumption of photo-assimilates for maximum growth and yield. A inacessibilidade e a deficiência de fósforo (P) da matéria orgânica do solo são as principais restrições para a baixa produtividade das culturas em algodão. Portanto, um estudo de campo de dois anos foi desenvolvido durante 2014-15, para explorar a influência de bactérias solubilizantes de fosfato (PSB), esterco de capoeira (FYM), esterco de aves (PM) e fontes inanimadas de P sobre vários fatores fisiológicos, crescimento, rendimento e parâmetros de qualidade da cultura do algodão no CCRI Multan. Respostas de campo de sementes inoculadas com duas cepas distintas de bactérias solubilizantes de fosfato (PSB) viz. Os resultados revelaram que a inoculação de sementes com PSB e o uso coletivo de fontes inorgânicas e orgânicas de P aumentaram consideravelmente os atributos que contribuem para a produtividade no algodão. No entanto, o tratamento P7 (80 kg P ha-1 da PM + 40 kg P ha-1 da fonte inorgânica) em coincidência com sementes inoculadas com PSB (S1) produziu planta mais alta, peso máximo de cápsula, IAF e CGR significativamente maiores. Produtividade significativamente maior do algodão, rendimento de fiapos, comprimento da fibra e BCR máximo de 1,95 e 1,81 também foi obtida a partir do tratamento P7 durante as duas épocas de cultivo. Em conclusão, o uso combinado de 80 kg P ha-1 de PM + 40 kg P ha-1 de fonte inorgânica e sementes de algodão inoculadas com a cepa-1 melhoraram a captação de fósforo, resultando em maior consumo de foto assimilados para obter crescimento e produtividade máximos.

Background In sustainable agriculture, the use of farmyard manure (FYM) is of great interest to environmental security and is effective as a good nitrogen source for sustainable crop production. Therefore, determining the effective doses of FYM that will be an alternative to chemical fertilizers, is also important to improve soil fertility and produce healthy products. This study aimed to determine the effects of FYM and ammonium nitrate (AN) fertilizers on the biological value and essential oil content of dill (Anethum graveolens L.). Methods Different doses FYM (7.5, 10, 12.5 and 15 t ha−1) and AN (30, 60, 90 and 120 kg ha−1) were applied by sowing and compared to a control group (no manure). We evaluated the chemical constituents as well as the biological activities of dill herbs and seeds growing at various doses of FYM and AN fertilizers. Results The most abundant components of essential oils were found to be dill apiole (11.96 ± 0.83 and 18.65 ± 1.89%) and carvotanacetone (15.90 ± 2.34 and 21.76 ± 1.62%) in the leaves and seeds, respectively. Limonene (9.01 ± 1.11%), 4-isopropyltoluen (8.24 ± 0.89%), dill ether (9.13 ± 1.12%) and mycrene (7.44 ± 0.68%) were major essential oils components in herbs. The highest concentration of the essential oil components was determined as 12.5–15 t ha−1 in FYM and 90 AN applications. From the effective concentration (EC50) of the samples, it was seen that 60 kg ha−1 AN infusion, 120 kg ha−1 AN decoction as well as 7.5 t ha−1 FYM and 10 t ha−1 FYM essential oils had the highest DPPH, ABTS+ and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity as shown by the lowest value of EC50 compared to the control. Although the antioxidant activities of the samples were significantly lower than those of the reference antioxidant gallic acid, it was evident that they did show the antioxidative potential for hydrogen and a single electron donor activities, thus could serve as free radical scavengers, and act as reductant. In particular, the highest total phenolic content (18.36 ± 0.35 mg g−1) was found in the infusion extract after applying the 60 kg ha−1 AN fertilizer. Essential oils extracted from the seeds also exhibited strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The highest antibacterial activity against all tested microbial species was observed with the 10 t ha−1 FYM application. Conclusion The findings of the study suggest that the application of FYM has promising effects on dill leaf, seed, and herb and can be considered as a suitable substitute for chemical fertilizers when growing dill, a plant with increasing importance and demand.

BackgroundIn organic crop farms, growing crop yields are limited by insufficient nitrogen supply to plants and crop weediness. In such farms, legume swards are proposed as a service crop to improve nitrogen cycling. However, a positive effect of nitrogen is not only on cereals but also on weeds. In crop rotation, legume swards can stimulate the competition of cereals using the above-ground mass of legume to control the spread of weeds.The effects of the following methods for weeds control were analyzed: (i) forage legumes (Trifolium pratenseL. andT. repens) undersown in cereals, (ii) forage legumes (T. pratense L., Medicago sativaL.) and their mixture with festulolium (x Festuliolium) and their above-ground mass management methods, and (iii) plant-based fertilizers (red clover above-ground mass fermented and composted).ResultsOat with red clover undersown reduced weediness more than red clover monocrops, pea, and their mixture with oats. Incorporated undersown white clover mass increased spring barley competitiveness with weeds. When growing legume swards for a longer period of time (green fallow), red clover and their mixture with festulolium are the most suitable for this purpose. The lowest weed dry weight (average 34%, compared with the removal from the field) was obtained while using the mixed management. The cultivation of cereals after forage legumes and their mixtures with festulolium (as a preceding crop) increases its grain yield and competitive ability against weeds. Fermented red clover and fermented pea and spring wheat mixture mass, as a manure, did not increase weediness.ConclusionsIt was concluded that the effectiveness of the perennial forage legumes is determined by the uses of the above-ground mass: soil cover, mulching, application of green manure, and intensity of mass mineralization. Type of activity of forage legumes on weeds were competition for environmental resources, disruption/promotion of germination, destruction of above-ground mass, reduction of the amount of matured seeds, creation of a physical barrier (mulch), and increase of competitiveness of cereals. Growing forage legumes in pure crops usually leads to a loss of marketable production.Graphic abstract

International audience; In Albania, ultramafic outcrops cover 11% of the surface and have the potential to support nickel phytomining. In a large-scale in-situ experiment on an ultramafic Vertisols in Pojske we are studying the influence of agronomical practices on Ni phytoextraction yield of Odontarrhena chalcidica (syn. Alyssum murale). Three cropping systems were compared in three plots in 2016-2017; POJ-1 Plot (0.3 ha) was established with plants that had germinated spontaneously without any treatments; POJ-2 plot (0.3 ha) was covered by plants that had germinated spontaneously and was treated with mineral fertilizer (N50P50K50 kg ha(-1)); and POJ-3 Plot (400 m(2)) was divided in four sub plots, where O. chalcidica was planted at a density of 4 plants m(-2) on which, we neither applied fertilizer, nor NPK fertilizer (N65P65K65), pig (FPM; N260:P105:K260 + 15 kg ha(-1)N, P, K) or chicken manure (FCHM; N260:P390:K260 +15 kg ha(-1) N, P, K. Irrigation and mechanical control of weeds was done on POJ-3. After 8 months, shoot Ni concentration, biomass, and Ni yields were higher in O. chalcidica treated with manure and the cost of biomass production was smaller. Nickel yield was more promising (145 kg ha(-1)) than in previous field trials. This study highlights that, using manure, the Ni yield increases Ni phytomining net values, thus agromining can become an economically justifiable agricultural cropping system.

Manure inputs into soil strongly affect soil microbial communities leading to shifts in microbial diversity and activity. It is still not clear whether these effects are caused mainly by the survival of microbes introduced with manure or by activation of the soil-borne microbiome. Here, we investigated how the soil microbiome was changed after the introduction of fresh farmyard cattle manure, and which microorganisms originating from manure survived in soil. Manure addition led to a strong increase in soil microbial biomass, gene copies abundances, respiration activity, and diversity. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed that higher microbial diversity in manured soil was caused mainly by activation of 113 soil-borne microbial genera which were mostly minor taxa in not-fertilized soil. Two weeks after manure input, 78% of the manure-associated genera were not detected anymore. Only 15 of 237 prokaryotic genera that originated from manure survived for 144 days in soil, and only 8 of them (primarily representatives of Clostridia class) were found in manured soil after winter. Thus, an increase in microbial biomass and diversity after manure input is caused mainly by activation of soil-borne microbial communities, while most exogenous microbes from manure do not survive in soil conditions after few months.

One of the important factors that can control and decrease soil compaction is incorporation farmyard manure to the soil. It increases soil elasticity and soil tolerance to the imported load. To evaluate the farmyard manure effect on the soil compaction, it was incorporated in the clay soil at different rates of 0, 45, 60, and 90 Mg ha-1. Tests were conducted at different tire passes of 1, 6, 11 and 16 on the same track at three soil moisture contents of 8%, 11% and 14% (dry base); soil bulk density was measured at depths of 10, 20, and 30 cm. To evaluate soil compaction, cylindrical cores were employed to measure the soil bulk density. To assess soil behavior during the soil compaction process, three displacement transducers were placed in the soil in three coordinate directions of x, y and z. The soil volumetric change was measured using the transducers and soil sinkage was also measured. A single-wheel tester was used in a soil bin with a Barez 8.25-16 (8) P.R HLF agricultural tractor tire operated at a forward velocity of 0.8 m s-1 under a vertical load of 4 kN and an inflation pressure of 300 kPa. Incorporating the farmyard manure noticeably decreased the final vertical and longitudinal displacement below the tire track, while the lateral displacement increased. Bulk density decrements of 14.7%, 9.7% and 6.3% were occurred via farmyard manure application rates of 90, 60 and 45 Mg ha-1, respectively. Maximum soil sinkage occurred at 14% moisture, 16 passes of tire and with no manure condition.

A study was conducted to explore the effects of fertilisation with farmyard manure (FYM) and mineral fertilisers on the content of PAHs in soil. The analyses were made on soil samples (collected in 1998–2009) from a long-term field experiment set up in 1986 in Bałcyny near Ostróda. The content of light and heavy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was determined on a gas chromatograph coupled with an FID detector. The analytical data were processed statistically according to an analysis of variance with repeated measurements. The content of light and heavy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was significantly higher in soil fertilised with FYM than in soil nourished only with mineral fertilisers. The effect of increasing doses of potassium on total light PAHs in soil depended on a fertilisation system – there was either a distinct decrease in soil fertilised with mineral substances alone or a slight increase in soil fertilised with manure. Regular soil liming significantly raised the ∑ of heavy PAHs in soil treated with manure but significantly decreased it in soil supplied only mineral fertilisers.

In order to determine the effect of fertilization, environment, and their interactions on the yield and oats yield components. Five fertilization treatments (T1-control, T2-80 kg N ha-1, T3-120 kg N ha-1, 80 kg P2O5 ha-1 and 80 kg K2O ha-1, T4-N120P80K80 + 5 t ha-1 of lime and T5-N120P80K80 + 5 t ha-1 of lime + 30 t ha-1 of farmyard manure) were examined during three growing seasons in Kraljevo location in Western Serbia. Grain yield (GY), 1000 grain weight (TGW), hectolitre weight (HW), plant height (PH), panicle length (PL), number of grains per panicle (NGP) and protein content (PC) were analysed. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of organic and mineral fertilization and calcification on the yield and oats yield components. On average, for all fertilizer variants, during the three-year trial, the highest yield of oats 3802 kg ha-1 was obtained in the fertilizer variant with the combined application of NPK fertilizers, lime and manure. Positive highly significant correlation, during in the study trial were found between yields with PH, PL and NGP. Negative and highly significant dependencies were found between protein content with GY, PH and NGP. The results of these studies indicate the importance of rational introduction of adequate quantities of fertilization, calcification and humization in order to make oats as profitable as possible in the agro-ecological conditions in Pannonian Environments.

This study was conducted at Ilam Municipality-2, Nepal to determine the response of organic manures on post harvest and nutrient restorative effect of cauliflower. Five manures, viz., bansoon, mustard oil cake, poultry manure, farmyard manure, and vermi-compost were evaluated. The postharvest losses, vitamin C content and soil nutrient restorative behavior were significantly highest with vermi-compost as compared to other manures. The maximum vitamin C content of 10.92 mg/100 gm was found with vermi-compost whereas the lowest of 9.66 mg/100 gm was found at farmyard manure. Moreover, the physiological losses were found to be least with vermi compost and the most with bansoon manure. Moreover, the restorative properties i.e. pH, N,P,K and organic %age were found to be significantly highest with vermi-compost as compared to other organic manures. This study concludes that vermi compost increases vitamin C content, postharvest longevity and improvement of physical and chemical properties of the soil.

If available to farmers, potatoes represent a crop classically fertilized with farmyard manure in the Czech Republic. At the same time, potatoes are a crop sensitive to soil–climate conditions. We evaluated the effect of cattle manure (FYM), manure and mineral nitrogen (FYM + N1, FYM + N2), manure and mineral fertilizers (FYM + N1PK, FYM + N2PK, FYM + N3PK) application and the effect of three soil-climatic conditions (Caslav—maize production area with degraded Chernozem, Ivanovice—maize production area with Chernozem, Lukavec—potatoes production area with Cambisol) over four years (2016–2019) on potatoes yield and soil chemical properties. Of all the factors, yields were most affected by location. Lukavec provided the highest average yields (37.2 t ha−1), followed by Ivanovice (23.5 t ha−1) and Caslav (15.5 t ha−1). The second most important factor was the climatic conditions of the year. Fertilization was the third most important parameter. FYM significantly increased yields compared to Control, but applied alone cannot cover the needs of potatoes. Similarly, the application of FYM and N increases yields, but for the highest yields, it is best to apply FYM + NPK (80 kg ha−1 N). Co-application of FYM and mineral N fertilizers mitigates the negative impact of mineral N on soil pH.

The stability of the soil aggregates is an important soil quality indicator, as it affects the soil’s overall functionality. As the soil aggregates are highly affected by agricultural practices, it is essential to know how crops interact with the aggregation process. Therefore, for obtaining more knowledge, this research was conducted in Estonia in an organic crop rotation field experiment from 2012/2013 through 2015/2016 to study the effects of crops (potato → spring barley undersown with red clover → red clover → winter wheat → pea) under different treatments (TC—control, TW—winter cover crops, TW+M—TW with farmyard manure 40 Mg ha−1 per crop rotation). The results showed that in the topsoil (5–10 cm), the soil water-stable aggregate (WSA) content (determined by the wet sieving method) from highest to lowest was following: pea (61.7%), winter wheat (61.6%), spring barley (61.5%), red clover (59.3%), potato (57.1%), whereas in the subsoil (30–35 cm): potato (50.6%), pea (48.5%), red clover (47.9%), spring barley (47.7%), winter wheat (46.4%). Therefore, potato was a noticeable crop, as among the crops, it had the lowest WSA content in the topsoil, while highest in the subsoil. The results shown gave an assumption that the after-effects of some crops (foremost with pea) were noticeable in the soil properties during the following crop. In the topsoil, the differences between crops were significant among crops just for TW and TW+M treatments. In TW, potato was lower than spring barley and winter wheat, but not significantly lower than pea or red clover. In the subsoil, significant differences between crops were observed for TC and TW treatments: in TC, potato was just significantly greater than red clover (but similar to other crops), and in TW, significantly greater than winter wheat. Furthermore, in the topsoil the soil organic carbon (SOC) content was not significantly affected by crops, and the use of winter cover crops generally increased the SOC content while concurrently decreased the WSA content and the soil maximum water holding capacity. This was probably caused by the additional tillage operations which cancelled out the possible benefits for the soil aggregates. As a consequence of the constantly declining SOC content, caused by the weakened soil aggregates, the plant-available P and K contents, especially in the absence of manure applications, decreased as well, probably due to the combination of fixation and removal of plant biomass. Therefore, it is expected that by continuing this trend, the plant growing conditions decline, which in turn will have a negative effect for the aggregate formation and carbon sequestration, which are essential for plant growth.

Biochar has shown a positive impact on degraded soils. However, the effect of co-applied biochar with farmyard manure and inorganic fertilizer on soil chemical characteristics, yield, nutrient constituent and economic analysis of cucumber did not receive adequate research attention in sub-Saharan Africa. A field experiment was conducted on sandy clay loam soil with biochar at 10 t/ha individually or combined with farmyard manure and NPK using cucumber as a test crop. The co-applied biochar with the 5t/ha farmyard manure and NPK significantly increased soil pH, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, total organic carbon and effective cation exchangeable capacity than the sole application of the NPK fertilizer and the farmyard manure. Cucumber yield, net income, nutrient content such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were significantly higher in the co-applied biochar with farmyard manure and NPK than the sole application of the NPK and the manure. Co-applied biochar with inorganic NPK showed higher soil available phosphorus, nitrogen, cucumber yield and net income than the co-applied biochar with farmyard manure. Similarly, co-applied biochar with NPK plots observed higher macronutrient constituents than the co-applied biochar with farmyard manure. These findings revealed that combined biochar with NPK proved to be an effective reclamation strategy to improve low fertile soils in the tropics than the co-applied biochar with farmyard manure.

A study was carried out to determine Fusarium wilt distribution in Bambara nut farmers’ fields and its management using farm yard manure (FYM). Four villages in Busia County were purposively sampled for the study. The data generated were subjected to analysis of variance and treatment means separated by least significant difference test. Fusarium wilt incidence in the fields ranged from 14.63 to 43.56%. In the greenhouse, FYM reduced the disease incidence by 10.2% and severity by 9.5% on the black landrace and 1.9 and 12.8%, respectively, on the red landrace. In the field, FYM reduced disease incidence by 9.1% and severity by 6.9% on the black landrace and 10.4 and 10.4%, respectively, on the red landrace. Farm yard manure had the lowest area under disease progress curve irrespective of the landrace. The study confirmed the presence of the pathogen in the fields and the ability to manage the disease using FYM.

Field trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of chemical fertilizers, farmyard manure (FYM) and gypsum on yield and yield components of groundnut (Arachis hypogea L.). The number of agricultural biogas plants has been increasing in the past decades in some European countries. Digestates obtained after anaerobic digestion (AD) of manure are usually spread on agricultural land; however, their hygiene status regarding pathogens posing public health and/or animal health challenges has been poorly characterized up to now in France. In this study, three replicates of manure and digestate were collected from five farm biogas plants receiving animal manure in order to assess the occurrence and concentrations of sporulating (Clostridium botulinum, Clostridioides difficile, Clostridium perfringens) and nonsporulating (Listeria monocytogenes, thermotolerant Campylobacter spp., Salmonella, Escherichia coli, enterococci) bacteria. Concentrations of E. coli, enterococci, and C. perfringens in digestates ranged from 102 to 104, 104 to 105, and 7 × 102 MPN/g and from 1.3 to 3 × 102 MPN/g, respectively. Thermotolerant Campylobacter, detected in all the manures, was only found in two digestates at a concentration of cells ranging from, The goal of this study was to assess the occurrence and concentrations of sporulating (Clostridium botulinum, Clostridioides difficile, Clostridium perfringens) and nonsporulating (Listeria monocytogenes, thermotolerant Campylobacter spp., Salmonella, Escherichia coli, enterococci) bacteria in manure and digestate collected in agricultural biogas plants. The levels of pathogenic bacteria in both manure and digestate suggested that some bacteria can persist throughout anaerobic digestion.

Fertilization with organic matter (farm yard manure and/or rice straw) is thought to enhance arsenic (As) mobilization into soil porewaters, with subsequent As assimilation by rice roots leading to enhanced translocation to the grain. Here, interlinked experiments (field manuring and soil batch culture) were conducted to find the effect of organic matter at a field application rate practiced in Bangladesh (5 t/ha) on As mobilization in soil for paddies impacted by As contaminated groundwater irrigation, a widespread phenomenon in Bangladesh where the experiments were conducted. Total As concentration in a paddy soil (Sonargaon) ranged from 21.9 to 8.1 mg/kg down the soil profile and strongly correlated with TOC content. Arsenic, Fe, Mn, and DOC release into soil solution, and As speciation, are intimately linked to OM amendment, soil depth and temporal variation. Organic matter amendments lead to increased mobilization of As into both soil porewaters and standing surface waters. The As speciation in the porewater was dominated by inorganic As (Asi) (arsenite and arsenate), with traces amounts of methylated species (DMAV and MMAV) only being found with OM amendment. It was noted in field trials that OM fertilization greatly enhanced As mobility to surface waters, which may have major implications for the fate of As in paddy agronomic ecosystems.

The use of saline water for the irrigation of forage crops to alleviate water scarcity has become necessary in semi-arid and arid regions and researchers have been seeking ways to offset the harmful results of soil salinity. Soil amendments with compost, manure and other organic material provide a valuable source of plant nutrients and appear to speed up soil recovery. The aim of this study was to compare the benefits of farmyard manure and a municipal solid waste (MSW) compost (40 mg ha&minus, 1) for raising alfalfa (Medicago sativa, cv. Gab&egrave, s) under salt-water irrigation. Both compost and manure improved plant mineral uptake and growth of alfalfa cultivated in clay soil. Using compost in clay soil increased the content of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and zinc (Zn) in plant tissues compared to manure, while the bio-accumulation factor (BAF) of Cu, Pb and Zn was higher in plants grown with manure compared to MSW compost with salt stress. Compost addition could enhance alfalfa growth under salt stress, which depends on salt doses and can greatly improve the recovery effects in a cost-effective way, although additional amendment type should receive special attention in order to be used as a tool for sustainable agriculture.

The impact of management practices on crop productivity has often been assessed. However, crop response to specific practices may vary as a function of soil type and other associated management practices. The objective of this study was to determine how interactions between tillage, fertilizer source, crop residue management, and pedoclimatic factors affected yield and N use efficiency (NUE) in a corn (Zea mays) - soybean (Glycine max) - spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) rotation in two contrasting soil types. A factorial experiment was conducted from 2009 to 2017, comparing moldboard plow [MB] vs minimum tillage [MT], five fertilizer sources (mineral control without nitrogen [PK], complete mineral fertilizer [NPK], liquid swine manure [LSM], liquid dairy manure [LDM] and solid poultry manure [SPM]), and two crop residue managements (retained [RR] vs harvested [RH]) on a silty clay and a sandy loam. In the silty clay, a positive effect of MT developed over time for all crop species, whereas MT had little effect on wheat yield, generally decreased corn yield and increased soybean yield in the sandy loam. When wheat residues were returned to the soil, corn grain yield in the next year was (i) decreased when combined with MT in both soils and (ii) when combined with liquid manures in the silty clay. In soybean, a positive residual effect of manures was observed under MT in the sandy loam only. For all crop species, yields were more responsive to fertilizer treatments in the sandy loam than in the silty clay, and manures generally performed better with wheat than with corn. Among the manures, LSM was the best fertilizer source. A regression tree indicated that corn grain yield was mainly driven by nitrogen supply (higher yield with > 110 kg available N ha−1) but that a lower response to N is expected in years with drier and colder conditions in July-August. Our results demonstrated that interactions among management practices is determinant for crop productivity, and that yield responses are modulated by crop species, soil type and sometimes, yearly weather conditions.

Use of organic manures for crop productivity not only improve crop production but also improving soil physicochemical properties. It also reduces soil and water pollution by acting as chelating agent for inorganic nutrients. Keeping these things in view an experiment was carried out aiming the use of different organic manures for improving crop productivity and to select a potential organic manure that improve crop productivity compared to others. All the manures were applied at the same rate 5 tons ha-1. The results revealed that all the wheat parameters were significantly affected by differences in nature of organic manures except days to emergence. Plots receiving Poultry manures has high Spikes m-2 (274), Grains spike-1 (60), more 1000 grain weight (42.287 g), high biological yield (11435 kg ha-1) and high grain yield (3996 kg ha-1). Similarly, Sheep manure had also great effect on wheat parameters such as higher emergence m-2(103), Tillers m-2 (308), plant height (104.50 cm), Grains spike-1 (60) and similar 1000 grain weight compared to poultry manures (42.200). Cattle and Farmyard manure were also found better compared to legume residue but were found less important in improving wheat quality compared to poultry and sheep manure. Similarly, legume residues showed very poor performance in improving wheat quality compared to other organic manures. Wheat parameters were found better performed when poultry or sheep manures applied at the rate of 5 tons ha-1. Therefore, it is recommended that application of sheep or poultry manures at the rate mentioned above improve wheat components under the agro-climatic conditions of Pakistan.

Soil water-stable aggregate (WSA) stability is one of the most important indicators of soil health, because it influences chemical, biological and other physical properties. At the same time, WSA formation, stabilization and degradation are also some of the most complex processes that occur in the soil, making them difficult to fully understand. In particular, there is a lack of research on WSA stability in the Baltic region. To gain a better understanding how aggregation occurs in Estonian pedo-climatic conditions, this study was conducted in 2014– 2015 in a sandy loam Stagnic Luvisol (LV-st) (WRB, 2014). Potato and barley plots were analysed in a three-year crop rotation (potato → spring wheat → barley) with straw removal. The nitrogen (N) fertilization treatments were 0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg ha-1 yr-1 N, both without and with 40 Mg ha-1 fermented cattle farmyard manure (FYM) application prior to potato planting in the previous autumn. WSA stability was determined by Eijkelkamp’s wet sieving apparatus from air-dried soil samples of less than 2 mm in diameter. The study revealed a negative correlation (r = −0.16) between increased N rates and WSA stability, regardless of FYM applications. Although soil organic carbon (SOC) content increased with additional N fertilization rates, the reduction in soil acidity (pHKCl) levels caused by N fertilization, most likely repealed the positive SOC content effect on WSA stability. In general, compared with sole N fertilization, FYM application had a positive effect on WSA stability. However, even though WSA stability did not always increase with FYM applications, it still had a positive effect on bulk density, SOC content and soil acidity levels. Effects of farmyard manure treatments on some soil structural parameters such as, aggregate stability (AS), geometric mean weight (GMWD) and mean weight (MWD) diameters, fragmentation (D) and mass (Dm) fractal dimensions, bulk density (BD) and organic C (OC) contents of aggregates were determined in a clay soil. Application of 67 Mg ha-1 farmyard manure to Vertic Haplustoll soil decreased AS 12.14% compared with the control. Manure treatment increased the proportion of microaggregates in the fractions 1.00 mm in size. While OC contents of aggregates increased between 22.8% and 123.4%, BD values decreased between 0.8% and 16.6% with the manure treatment. Fragmentation (D) and mass (Dm) fractal dimensions were increased with decreasing numbers of macroaggregates of the clay soil. GMWD (1.16 mm) and MWD (1.86 mm) obtained in the manure treatment were lower than that in the control treatment (1.20 mm and 1.95 mm, respectively). Although OC content of the aggregates increased with the manure treatment, the number of macroaggregates of clay soil decreased with decreasing AS..

A study was carried out to find the effect of organic manures and inorganic fertilizers on certain quality parameters like ascorbic acid, protein content and fibre in okra ( Abelmoschus esculentus L.) cv. ARKA ANAMIKA. This experiment consisted of a total 12 treatments.Among the treatments 50 percent of RDF+ 50 per cent of RDN through FYM and 50 per cent of RDF+50 per cent RDN through poultry manure recorded minimum fibre content (10.17 %) of pods. It was found that with lesser fibre content the quality of okra fruit increased. Among the treatments the maximum protein content (16.37 %) was recorded in 50 per cent of RDF+ 50 per cent of RDN through FYM treatment. Farmyard manure @ 20 t/ha and 50 per cent of RDF+ 50 per cent of RDN through FYM treatments recorded maximum ascorbic acid (19.67 mg/100g). The perusal of the data revealed that with the use of organic manure in combination with inorganic fertilizers the okra quality parameters were enhanced when compared to other treatments. The data obtained from the above study was the protein content has increased significantly by the application of different organic manures with nitrogenous fertilizers compared to the control and complete inorganic fertilizers. It was, therefore, concluded that the use of organic manure in combination with inorganic fertilizers in the production of vegetables like okra should be encouraged as it is beneficial for the physical growth of okra plant while the above said quality parameters of okra fruit are dependent only on combined manure and fertilizer dose.

Set-aside farmland can effectively improve the self-rehabilitation of arable soil. Long-term set-asides however cannot satisfy provisionment, therefore the use of short-term set-asides to restore cultivated soil is a better option. Few studies have compared short-term set-aside patterns, and the effects of set-asides on soil microbial community and enzyme enzymes. We analyzed the bacterial structure, microbial biomass carbon/nitrogen and enzyme activity of farmland soil under different set-aside regimes in the Yellow River Delta of China. Bacterial alpha diversity was relatively lower under only irrigation, and farmyard manure applications showed clear advantages. Set-asides should consider their influence on soil organic carbon and nitrogen, which were correlated with microbial community structure. Nitrospira (0.47–1.67%), Acidobacteria Gp6 (8.26–15.91%) and unclassified Burkholderiales (1.50–2.81%) were significantly altered (p < 0.01). Based on functions of these genera, some set-aside patterns led to a relative balance in nitrogen and carbon turnover. Partial treatments showed a deficiency in organic matter. In addition, farmyard manure may lead to the increased consumption of organic matter, with the exception of native plants set-asides. Conventional farming (control group) displayed a significant enzyme activity advantage. Set-aside management practices guided soil microbial communities to different states. Integrated soil microbiota and the content of carbon and nitrogen, native plants with farmyard manure showed an equilibrium state relatively, which would be helpful to improve land quality in the short-term.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Research Farm, The University of Agriculture, Peshawar, Pakistan during winter 2015 in a simple randomized complete block design (RCBD) having three replications. Farmyard manure (FYM) application at four levels (0, 5, 10, and 15 ton ha-1) with variety (Inoculated and non-inoculated) were included in experiment. FYM application at the rate of 15 ton ha-1 resulted in higher grain yield (2198.53 kg ha-1) as compared to control (1762.68 kg ha-1). Similarly inoculated seeds produced higher grain yield (2083.06 kg ha-1) as compared to non­­-inoculated seeds (1915.92 kg ha-1). The pods plant-1 and thousand grain weight were significantly affected by FYM and inoculation while grains pod-1was significantly affected by only FYM. The grains were more pod-1 in plots supplied with 15 tons FYM ha-1 while less number of grains pod-1 (1.48) resulted in control plots. Plants formed more pods (63.68) and maximum thousand grain weight (260.21 g) was calculated in plots treated with FYM at the rate of 15 ton ha-1 as compared to other levels. In the same way more pods plant-1(58.44) and thousand grain weight (241.65 g) was observed in plots with inoculated seed sown. Hence application of FYM at the rate of 15 ton ha-1 and inoculation of seeds with rhizobium strains is recommended for better yield of chick pea. The experiment contained a total of 32 treatment units. FYM application at four levels (0, 5, 10, and 15 ton ha-1) with variety (Inoculated and non-inoculated) were included in experiment. FYM application @ 15 ton ha-1resulted in a significant growth than5 ton ha-1, 10 ton ha -1and the control. Similarly inoculated seeds produced better crop growth as compared to non-­inoculated seed. The parameters such as plant height and nodule per plant were significantly affected by both the FYM and inoculation, while days required for emerging 50% plants and emergence per m2 were also significantly affected but only by FYM. Higher plant height (74.33) and nodule per plant (68.24) was counted in plots treated with FYM @ 15 ton ha-1 as compared to other levels. Similarly Higher plant height (73.54) and nodule per plant (69.50) was counted in plots with inoculated seeds. Hence application of FYM @15t ha-1 and inoculation with Rhizobium strains are the recommended practices for better growth and crop stand of chickpea. Biochar addition to the composting feedstock was shown to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient leaching during the composting process, and to result in a fertilizer and plant growth medium that is superior to non-amended composts. However, the impact of biochar on the quality and carbon speciation of the organic matter in bulk compost has so far not been the focus of systematic analyses, although these parameters are key to determine the long-term stability and carbon sequestration potential of biochar-amended composts in soil. In this study, we used different spectroscopic techniques to compare the organic carbon speciation of manure compost amended with three different biochars. A non-biochar-amended compost served as control. Based on Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy we did not observe any differences in carbon speciation of the bulk compost independent of biochar type, despite a change in the FTIR absorbance ratio 2925 cm− 1/1034 cm− 1, that is suggested as an indicator for compost maturity. Specific UV absorbance (SUVA) and emission-excitation matrixes (EEM) revealed minor differences in the extractable carbon fractions, which only accounted for ~ 2–3% of total organic carbon. Increased total organic carbon content of biochar-amended composts was only due to the addition of biochar-C and not enhanced preservation of compost feedstock-C. Our results suggest that biochars do not alter the carbon speciation in compost organic matter under conditions optimized for aerobic decomposition of compost feedstock. Considering the effects of biochar on compost nutrient retention, mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration, biochar addition during aerobic composting of manure might be an attractive strategy to produce a sustainable, slow release fertilizer., The Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) for his “Ramón y Cajal” post-doctoral contract (RYC-2014-16338). To evaluate the agronomic value of animal manure, we quantified the effects of pedo-climatic, crop and management factors on crop productivity, N use efficiency, and soil organic matter, described with simple indicators that compare manures with mineral fertilizers. We selected 80 European long-term field experiments that used bovine farmyard manure or bovine liquid slurry, alone (FYM and SLU) or combined with mineral fertilizers (FYMm and SLUm), and compared them to mineral fertilizer only reference treatments. We collected 5570 measurements from 107 papers. FYM produced slightly lower crop yields (−9.5%) when used alone and higher (+11.3%) yields when used in combination with N fertilizer (FYMm), compared to those obtained using mineral fertilizers only. Conditions promoting manure-N mineralization (lighter soil texture, warmer temperature, longer growing season, and shallower incorporation depth) significantly increased the effect of FYM/FYMm on crop yield and yield N. The production efficiency of FYM (yield:N applied ratio) was slightly lower than that of mineral fertilizers (-1.6%). The apparent N recoveries of FYM and FYMm were 59.3% and 78.7%, respectively, of mineral fertilizers. Manured soils had significantly higher C (+32.9% on average for FYM and FYMm) and N (+21.5%) concentrations. Compared to mineral fertilizers, yield was reduced by 9.1% with SLU, but not with SLUm. Influencing factors were similar to those of FYM/FYMm. Efficiency indicators indicated SLU (but not SLUm) was less effective than mineral fertilizers. Slurry significantly increased SOC (on average for SLU and SLUm by +17.4%) and soil N (+15.7%) concentrations. In conclusion, compared to mineral N fertilizers, bovine farmyard manure and slurry were slightly less effective on the crop, but determined marked increases to SOC and soil N, and thus, to long-term soil fertility maintenance.

A field experiment was conducted during 2008–2009 and 2009–2010 to investigate the effect of organic sources of nutrients on tuber bulking rate, grades and specific gravity of potato tubers. The experiment consisted 24 treatment combinations with 8 treatment in popcorn [control, recommended dose of fertilizers (N120P25K35 kg ha−1), farmyard manure equivalent to 120 kg N ha−1, leaf compost equivalent to 120 kg N ha−1, vermicompost equivalent to 120 kg N ha−1, farmyard manure equivalent to 90 kg N ha−1, leaf compost equivalent to 90 kg N ha−1 vermicompost equivalent to 90 kg N ha−1 in succeeding crop of potato, three treatments [control, farmyard manure equivalent to 60 kg N ha−1 and farmyard manure equivalent to 90 kg N ha−1] were superimposed on the different treatments of pop corn. It was found that the application of farmyard manure equivalent to120 kg N ha−1 to pop corn and farmyard manure equivalent in 90 kg N ha−1 in potato gave the highest values of tuber bulking rate, specific gravity, number of large–sized (A–grade) and medium–sized tubers (B–grade) and total tuber yield followed by vermicompost equivalent to to 120 kg N ha−1. Farmyard manure equivalent to 90 kg N ha−1 to potato also recorded the higher bulking rate, tuber yield, specific gravity and a number of large sized tubers (A– grade and B–grade) as compared to the farmyard manure equivalent to 60 kg N ha−1. The available N, P, and K in soil also improved with the application of organic manures.

We investigated effect of farm yard manure (FYM) and compost applied to metal contaminated soil at rate of 1% (FYM-1, compost-1), 2% (FYM-2, compost-2), and 3% (FYM-3, compost-3). FYM significantly (P0.001) increased dry weights of shoots and roots while compost increased root dry weight compared to control. Amendments significantly increased nickel (Ni) in shoots and roots of maize except compost applied at 1%. FYM-3 and -1 caused maximum Ni in shoots (11.42 mg kg(-1)) and roots (80.92 mg kg(-1)), respectively while compost-2 caused maximum Ni (14.08 mg kg(-1)) and (163.87 mg kg(-1)) in shoots and roots, respectively. Plants grown in pots amended with FYM-2 and compost-1 contained minimum Cu (30.12 and 30.11 mg kg(-1)) in shoots, respectively. FYM-2 and compost-2 caused minimum zinc (Zn) (59.08 and 66.0 mg kg(-1)) in maize shoots, respectively. FYM-2 caused minimum Mn in maize shoots while compost increased Mn in shoots and roots compared to control. FYM and compost increased the ammonium bicarbonate diethylene triamine penta acetic acid (AB-DTPA) extractable Ni and Mn in the soil and decreased Cu and Zn. Lower remediation factors for all metals with compost indicated that compost was effective to stabilize the metals in soil compared to FYM.
