Micro and Small Enterprises are essential for the economy to produce wealth and participate in a large part of the Gross Domestic Product - GDP of Brazil. However, the market is the lack of foresight of the projects and the execution of other tasks such as management, existence of working capital, management of working capital management, management among which culminate in the death of enterprises. In this sense, the question is: what is the role of the manager in facing the challenges of micro and small companies? Therefore, the objective of the research is to understand the role of the manager in facing the challenges of micro and small companies through a literature review of articles, books and data related to the theme. The results obtained identify that businesses go through recurring challenges, where they are related: interest in cooperation with competitors, they do not have technical knowledge about commercialization, lack of knowledge of the clientele, passage in relation to the competition of competitive advantages and no understanding of the importance of intangibles in the Business. However, it is concluded that the manager is the agent of coping with adversities and fundamental to the success of micro and small companies in Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
