Background The Behavior Problems Inventory-Short Form (BPI-S), which assesses behavior problems in individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID), is a shorter version of the BPI-01. This study investigated the reliability and validity of the BPI-S Japanese version (BPI-S-J) for adolescents/adults with ID and behavior problems. Methods The test–retest reliability included participants with ID and behavioral problems who were enrolled in welfare services. For test–retest reliability, 42 caregivers independently responded to the BPI-S-J every two weeks. Inter-rater reliability was independently assessed using the BPI-S-J by two caregivers who were familiar with the 42 participants. The participants of the validity assessment were 227 students from special needs schools or patients with ID admitted to medical institutions. The total frequency total score was compared based on the degree of ID. To examine the criterion-related validity, we analyzed the total frequency score, the total score of the Criteria for Determining Severe Problem Behavior (CDSPB) and the total score of the Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Japanese version (ABC-J). Results The BPI-S-J of test–retest reliability was satisfactory (intra-class correlation; ICC) = 0.954), and the total score significantly (ICC = 0.721) represented good inter-rater reliability. For the validity, the BPI-S-J score of participants who had severe and profound ID was significantly higher than those who had mild and moderate ID. Significant correlations were observed between the BPI-S-J score and CDSPB score (r = 0.499), and the ABC-J score (r = 0.699), indicating adequate criterion-related validity. Conclusion This study showed the utility of the BPI-S-J to assess behavior problems in the Japanese ID population.

The transition from childhood to adolescence is a sensitive period, triggering changes in health- and weight-related behaviours including eating habits which likely vary between girls and boys. We aimed to characterise the changes in the frequency of consumption of select sugary foods and drinks ('sweet treats') among 4237 Finnish girls and boys during a 2-year follow-up period. Additionally, we examined four subgroups: children whose weight or waist normalised as well as children whose weight or waist circumference increased during follow-up. An FFQ was completed at 11 center dot 1 (sd 0 center dot 9) and again at 13 center dot 4 (sd 1 center dot 1) years of age. A sum variable sweet treat index (STI, range 0-84) captured the weekly consumption frequencies of sweet treats. From baseline to follow-up, the mean STI decreased among girls from 7 center dot 1 (95 % CI 6 center dot 9, 7 center dot 3) to 6 center dot 0 (95 % CI 5 center dot 9, 6 center dot 2) (P < 0 center dot 001) and boys from 8 center dot 5 (95 % CI 8 center dot 3, 8 center dot 8) to 7 center dot 8 (95 % CI 7 center dot 6, 7 center dot 8) (P < 0 center dot 001), although both sexes increased their chocolate/sweets consumption: girls from 1 center dot 3 (95 % CI 1 center dot 3, 1 center dot 4) to 1 center dot 6 (95 % CI 1 center dot 5, 1 center dot 6) (P < 0 center dot 001) and boys from 1 center dot 4 (95 % CI 1 center dot 3, 1 center dot 4) to 1 center dot 6 (95 % CI 1 center dot 6, 1 center dot 7) (P < 0 center dot 001), and boys increased their soft drink consumption from 1 center dot 4 (95 % CI 1 center dot 3, 1 center dot 4) to 1 center dot 5 (95 % CI 1 center dot 4, 1 center dot 5) (P = 0 center dot 020). We found similar decreases in both the weight and waist subgroups. To conclude, the total frequency of consumption of sweet treats decreased during early adolescence. A similar trend across subgroups suggests that the frequency of consumption of sweet treats is unrelated to becoming overweight.

Background: The cause of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is still unknown. Literature has indicated that there is a statistically significant correlation between hyperhomocysteinemia and SSNHL, yet there is lack of study in the relationship concerning total frequency deafness subtype of SSNHL. This study investigated the relationship between plasma concentration of homocysteine (Hcy), serum concentration of folic acid and occurrence and treatment responding in total frequency deafness adult patients, and explored whether targeted early intervention was associated with improved clinical outcome in this subgroup. Methods: A total of 54 consecutive adult patients with diagnosis of sudden total frequency deafness in a single institution was enrolled into the study group. Two control groups were established. Control group 1 was derived from inpatients with normal listening comprehension. Control group 2 included 52 patients with sudden total frequency deafness treated in a parallel hospital. Blood concentration of folic acid and Hcy was investigated. Treatment included Ginkgo biloba extract, dexamethasone, hyperbaric oxygen, folic acid, vitamin B6, and optional vitamin B12. All data was statistically analyzed. Blood level of Hcy and folic acid was compared between study group and control group 1. Results: Although there was no clear evidence for the divergence trend of Hcy and folic acid levels individually, the results showed that the study group had higher blood level of Hcy and lower blood level of folic acid, than control group. In the study group, 24 patients (44.44%) demonstrated treatment effectiveness after the 2-week treatment course. Patients without vertigo had higher effective rate than patients with vertigo (P Conclusions: Effective rate of study group was higher than control group 2 which had no folic acid and vitamin B6/B12 supplement. High blood Hcy and low blood folic acid were closely associated in patients with sudden total frequency deafness. The currently accepted concept of treatment for sudden total frequency deafness is not essentially satisfactory. Testing of plasma Hcy and serum folic acid may provide referential value for its treatment and prognosis evaluation.

Helicobacter pylori OipA (outer inflammatory protein A) is an outer membrane protein that involves in the binding and colonization of the bacterium in the stomach. The oipA status is associated with the risk of peptic ulcerations (PUs) and gastric cancer (GC) diseases. However, the association trend with PUs compared to GC is often different and highly challenging. We therefore aimed to determine the presence of this genotype in Iranian strains and assess its association with the risk of PUs and GC in a larger number of samples. A total of 319 strains were obtained from 172 patients with non-atrophic gastritis (NAG), 52 with PUs and 95 with GC. The prevalence of the oipA+ vs. oipA− genotype was 67.7% (216/319). The total frequency of the oipA+ vs. oipA− genotypes in NAG, PUs, GC, non-peptic ulceration (including NAG and GC), and non-tumor (including NAG and PUs) groups was 121/172 (70.3%), 50/52 (96.2%), 45/95 (47.4%), 166/267 (62.2%), and 171/224 (76.3%), respectively. In multiple logistic regression analysis, the oipA+ vs. oipA− genotype showed a strong direct association with PUs; the ORadj (95% CI) was 18.751 (4.421–79.531), (p = 0.00007). In contrast, it had a significant reverse association with GC; the ORadj (95% CI) was 0.330 (0.179–0.607), (p = 0.00036). In the present study, we interestingly found a contrasting association of the H. pylori oipA genotype with the risk of PUs and GC in Iran. Therefore, the contrasting effect of this genotype may emphasize its independent role in predicting clinical outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the emergence and trajectory of feeding difficulties in young children who are later diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHOD: The Behavioral Pediatrics Feeding Assessment Scale (BPFAS) was administered to a sample of 93 toddlers with an older sibling with ASD -- the high-risk group -- and 62 toddlers with no known familial ASD -- the low-risk group -- as part of a larger infant sibling study. The BPFAS was completed by parents at 15, 18, 24, and 36 months of age. At 36 months, participants underwent a diagnostic assessment and were classified into one of four outcome groups: ASD, Non-Typical Development, High-risk Typically Developing, and Low-risk Typically Developing. The BPFAS was scored for total frequency of feeding difficulties, as well as autism-specific factor scores previously described in the literature. RESULTS: The frequency of feeding difficulties increased significantly more rapidly in the ASD group between 15 and 36 months of age, and by 36 months, they exhibited a significantly higher total frequency score than all other groups. Analysis of the factor scores revealed a similar pattern for the food acceptance and mealtime behavior domains, but no significant differences in the medical/oral motor domain. CONCLUSION: Feeding difficulties develop significantly more rapidly in children with ASD, with longitudinal monitoring revealing the steeper trajectory earlier than can be detected with cross-sectional analysis. Children with ASD are at risk of health and social consequences of poor feeding behavior that may potentially be minimized if addressed early and appropriately.

Contains fulltext : 218692.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) INTRODUCTION: Accelerometry of the upper extremity (UE) potentially provides information on the extent of activities in daily life in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The objective of this study is to evaluate the validity of home measurements of UE accelerometry. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in 16 patients with DMD (aged 7-17 years). Patients were monitored for 1 to 3 days with two accelerometers on the UE and one accelerometer on the wheelchair. RESULTS: The mean intensity of activity and the mean frequency of transfers of arm elevation from low to middle were approximately twofold higher in patients with a Brooke scale score of 1 or 2 than in patients with a Brooke scale score of 3 or 4. Correlations with the Performance of Upper Limb scale score were high for intensity and for the total frequency of arm elevations per hour. DISCUSSION: Intensity, percentage of time in middle orientation, and frequency of transfers of the upper arm correlated well with functional measurements.

Background: Despite growing interest in the (therapeutic) use of intranasal oxytocin administration in children, the potential side-effects of intranasal oxytocin have remained largely unclear to date. The current study is the first double-blind randomized controlled trial to examine side-effects following single administration of oxytocin nasal spray in elementary school-aged children. Methods: One hundred children (8–12 years old) were randomly assigned to receive oxytocin or placebo nasal spray. We assessed side-effects by means of a standardized, drug-specific questionnaire and an open-ended question at two time points: 90 min after nasal spray administration and 24 h after administration. Results: There were no significant associations between nasal spray condition and total frequency of reported side-effects or reports of specific side-effects. Children and their mothers were unable to correctly guess nasal spray allocation, further supporting that the subjective experience of oxytocin versus placebo nasal spray effects was similar. Moreover, the majority of reported side-effects were classified as mild and ceased within 24 h after the procedure, indicating that the nasal sprays were well tolerated. Conclusion: In all, this study is the first randomized controlled trial to provide information on the safety of intranasal oxytocin administration in middle childhood. The current study suggests that single administration of intranasal oxytocin is likely safe in elementary school-aged children.

This study evaluated the effects of a ketogenic diet (KD) based on extra virgin coconut oil (Cocos nucifera L., VCO), on the treatment of epileptic rats. Two sets of experiments were conducted. First, male Wistar rats underwent induction of status epilepticus (SE) with the administration of pilocarpine intraperitoneally 21 animals reached spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRS) and were randomly allocated to the dietary regimens and video-monitored for 19 days. In the second experiment, 24 animals were randomized immediately after the induction of SE and followed for 67 days. Diets were as follows: Control (AIN-93G; 7% lipid), KetoTAGsoya (KD based on soybean oil; 69.79% lipid), and KetoTAGcoco (KD based on VCO; 69.79% lipid). There were no differences in the latency to the first crisis, total frequency, and duration of the SRS between groups in 2 experiments. The data suggest no effects of KD, with or without VCO, in rats with pilocarpine-induced epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Revision of infected knee arthroplasties is associated with high failure rates (30-40%). An understanding of the microbiology is important to optimize treatment and outcome. We describe microbiological diagnostic practice and diagnosis in revision of infected knee arthroplasties.METHODS: One hundred and two partial revisions (open debridement and exchange of tibial insert) and 213 two-stage procedures performed due to infection in 275 patients from 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2013 were included and analysed by linkage to data from a nationwide registry on microbiological test results.RESULTS: 78 (24.8%) revisions were culture negative, 192 (60.9%) showed monomicrobial growth and 43 (14.3%) polymicrobial growth. Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequent isolate in mono-culture in 70 (22.2%) revisions and in polymicrobial culture in 15 revisions with a total frequency of 27.0%. Only one case (1.4%) of methicillin-resistance was registered. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) were frequent, sole pathogen in 65 revisions and in polymicrobial cultures in 28 revisions with a total frequency of 29.5%. A pre-operative knee aspiration was performed in 50% and preoperative blood cultures were performed in 22% of cases. In 73% of the preoperative knee-aspirations bacteriological findings were fully or partially in accordance with intraoperative cultures. In 54% of the later re-revisions due to infection (treatment-failures) the cultured species differed from or was not detected at index revision surgery.CONCLUSIONS: The 25% culture negative cases in combination with only 50% preoperative knee aspirations and prevailing high failure rates confirm the need for improvement of diagnostic practice and treatment of infected knee arthroplasties.

Milk provides not only the building blocks for somatic development but also the hormonal signals that contribute to the biopsychological organization of the infant. Among mammals, glucocorticoids (GCs) in mother’s milk have been associated with infant temperament. This study extended prior work to investigate rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) mother–infant dyads (N = 34) from birth through 8 months postpartum. Regression analysis revealed that cortisol concentrations in milk during the neonatal period predicted impulsivity on a cognitive task, but not global social behaviors, months later. During this time period, sex-differentiated social behavior emerged. For female infants, milk cortisol concentrations predicted total frequency of play. Collectively, these findings support and extend the “lactational programming” hypothesis on the impact of maternal-origin hormones ingested via milk.

OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the roles of frequency and consistency of self-weighing in promoting weight-loss maintenance. METHODS Participants were 74 adults who completed a 3-month internet-based weight-loss program followed by a 9-month no-intervention maintenance period. Frequency of self-weighing was defined as the number of days that participants self-weighed during the maintenance period via a study-provided smart scale. Consistency was defined as the number of weeks that participants self-weighed at a certain frequency, with multiple minimum thresholds examined. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to assess associations among frequency, consistency, and weight change during the maintenance period. Glucocorticoids (GCs) play an important role in the treatment of several hematological malignancies, such as immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). The glucocorticoid receptor (GR) mediates the effects of GCs. Five isoforms of GR mRNA were described: GRα, GRβ, GRγ, GRP, and GRA. GR levels are regulated by alternative splicing of GR mRNA. Several studies demonstrated that a lower GR expression was associated with poor GC response.This study investigated the expression of GR isoforms and the relationship between GC resistance in ITP.This study determined GRα/β/γ/P mRNA and GRα/β protein expression levels using SYBR Green Real-time PCR and Western blot, respectively, in 49 newly diagnosed ITP patients and 31 controls.The expression of GR isoform mRNA in ITP and controls showed the following trend: GRα GRP GRγ GRβ. The expression of GRα, β mRNA and the total frequency of the four GR isoforms in ITP was significantly higher than in controls (P 0.05). The expression of GRα mRNA and protein in the GC-resistant group was significantly lower than that in the GC-sensitive group and controls (P 0.05). GRβ could not be detected at the protein level in our experimental conditions.GRα and GRP were the main GR isoforms responsible for the effects of GC, and GRα and GRP exhibited synergistic effects. The down-regulation of GRα levels may play an important role in GC resistance in ITP. The effects of GCs in ITP were not associated with changes in GRβ and GRγ.

Few have clarified what exercise frequencies and patterns (e.g. alone or with others) are effective for preventing depression in older adults. We examined the relationship between total frequency and/or pattern of exercise and the risk of depression after two years in older Japanese adults. We used a sub-sample of the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES) performed in 2011 and 2013. The sample for analysis was 1,422 adults aged 65 years or older without depression and low physical strength in 2011. All variables were assessed with a questionnaire including the geriatric depression screening scale (GDS-15). Binomial logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationships between exercise in 2011 and depression in 2013 (0 = non-depression, 1 = depression). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for later depression was 0.52 (95% confidence intervals: 0.33–0.81) for exercise two or more times a week compared to non-exercisers. The OR for exercisers who exercise with others even a little (Ewo) was 0.53 (0.34–0.84) compared to non-exercisers. Among combinations of frequency and pattern, the OR for Ewo who exercise two or more times a week was 0.40 (0.24–0.68) compared to non-exercisers. Exercising at least twice a week and/or with others may be useful in preventing depression in older adults.

The frequency of cells containing micronuclei (MN) and the presence of centromeres in these MN were analyzed in lymphocytes of 98 men from Southern Bohemia. Forty-six of them had worked at the uranium processing plant ‘MAPE Mydlovary' which was closed in 1991, and 52 men were controls from the same area. FISH using human pan-centromeric chromosome paint was employed to detect centromere-positive (CEN+) and -negative (CEN-) MN. A total of 1,000 binucleated cells (BNC) per participant were analyzed after cytochalasin B treatment. All BNC with MN (CEN+ or CEN-) were recorded. No differences were found between formerly exposed workers and the control group, neither in the total frequency of cells with MN per 1,000 BNC (mean levels ± SD, 9.1 ± 3.1 and 9.8 ± 2.5, respectively) nor in the percentage of CEN- MN, which were equal (50 ± 18 and 49 ± 17, respectively). Also, there was no difference between individuals living in the 3 villages closest to the uranium processing plant and those living further away. Considering the fact that effective doses of the workers at MAPE Mydlovary were overall similar to those of former uranium miners in whom higher frequencies of CEN- MN have been found more than 10 years after they had finished working underground, these results are somewhat surprising. A more detailed analysis of the exposures indicates that uranium miners received a greater percentage of their effective dose from the inhalation of radon and its daughters, whereas uranium processing workers received it from the incorporation of long-lived radioactive nuclides such as uranium. If, as has been suggested before, the higher level of DNA damage in miners is due to induced genomic instability, then this phenomenon may be related to radon exposure rather than exposure to uranium.

This study aimed to determine the specific correlation between indoor air temperature and agitation of nursing home residents with dementia. Agitated behaviors of 21 residents, living in 1 nursing home, were assessed for a 10-month period using the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI). The CMAI Total Frequency scores were found to increase significantly when indoor average temperatures deviated from 22.6°C. In addition, cumulative exposure to temperatures higher than 26°C and lower than 20°C was linearly correlated with CMAI Total Frequency scores. Results showed that agitated behaviors not only affected the person manifesting them but were found to be disruptive for other residents and the delivery of care. Agitation can, therefore, be potentially reduced by limiting the range of indoor air temperature variations, and aged care providers should ensure that a thermally comfortable environment is provided in nursing homes to enhance comfort and well-being of all occupants.

Although exercising with others may have extra health benefits compared to exercising alone, few studies have examined the differences. We sought to examine whether the association of regular exercise to subjective health status differs according to whether people exercise alone and/or with others, adjusting for frequency of exercise. The study was based on the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES) Cohort Study data. Participants were 21,684 subjects aged 65 or older. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the association. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for poor self-rated health were significantly lower for people who exercised compared to non-exercisers. In analyses restricted to regular exercisers the ORs for poor health were 0.69 (95% confidence intervals: 0.60–0.79) for individuals exercising alone more often than with others, 0.74 (0.64–0.84) for people who were equally likely to exercise alone as with others, 0.57 (0.43–0.75) for individuals exercising with others more frequently than alone, and 0.79 (0.64–0.97) for individuals only exercising with others compared to individuals only exercising alone. Although exercising alone and exercising with others both seem to have health benefits, increased frequency of exercise with others has important health benefits regardless of the total frequency of exercise.

INTRODUCTION: Concerns about secondhand smoke, increasing indoor smoking bans, and health concerns regarding cigarettes are contributing to the development of new smokeless tobacco (ST) products by the tobacco industry and the repositioning of traditional ST products. The objective of this research was to systematically document the changing advertising strategies and themes of the ST industry. METHODS: Using descriptive content analysis, this study analyzed 17 nationally circulated magazines for ST advertisements (ads) from 1998-1999 and 2005-2006, recording both magazine and advertisement characteristics (e.g., themes, selling proposition, people portrayed, and setting/surroundings.) Ninety-five unique ads were found during the two time periods-occurring with total frequency of 290 ad placements in 816 issues. One hundred ninety-one ads were found in the 2005-2006 sample, while 99 were found in the 1998-1999 magazines. RESULTS: Significant differences in ST ads were identified between time periods and magazine types. A greater percentage of ads were found in the latter time period, and the average number of ads per issue increased (0.24 in 1998-1999 and 0.49 in 2005-2006, p < .001). More recent magazines and general adult magazines contained a greater proportion of flavored products, "alternative to cigarette" messages, and indoor settings when compared with earlier magazines and men's magazines, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: While continuing to advertise in men's magazines with themes appealing to men and "traditional" ST users, the ST industry appears to be simultaneously changing its message placement and content in order to include readers of general adult magazines who may not currently use ST.

To better understand the processing of complex high-frequency sounds, modulation-detection thresholds were measured for sinusoidal frequency modulation (SFM), quasi-frequency modulation (QFM), sinusoidal amplitude modulation (SAM), and random-phase FM (RPFM). At the lowest modulation frequency (5 Hz) modulation thresholds expressed as AM depth were similar for RPFM, SAM and QFM suggesting the predominance of envelope cues. At the higher modulation frequencies (20 and 40 Hz) thresholds expressed as total frequency excursions were similar for SFM and QFM suggesting a common mechanism, one perhaps based on single-channel FM-to-AM conversion or on a multi-channel place mechanism. The fact that the nominal envelopes of SFM and QFM are different (SFM has a flat envelope), seems to preclude processing based on the envelope of the external stimulus. Also, given the 4-kHz carrier and the similarity to previously published results obtained with a 1-kHz carrier, processing based on temporally-coded fine structure for all four types of modulation appears unlikely.

Introduction Elements form a basic and natural constituent of the Earth's crust and are released into the atmosphere due to many human activities like mining and manufacturing. Of all, the elements, lead toxicity is a prevailing as well as a growing concern the world over because of its ability to affect multiple clinical functions. Methodology Blood lead levels have been analyzed in a large pan-India cohort of 222,668 comprising of 121,115 males and 101,553 females respectively. The cohort included all age groups from 55 years old. The analytical platform of Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry has been used to assess lead levels. Result Blood lead levels of ≥ 150 μg/L was considered high for analysis. The total frequency of high lead levels detected in our study was 1.16%. The frequency of males affected were higher than females, with the difference being statistically significant.. Conclusion Lead being ubiquitous in its presence and also serving no biological function, has grown today to become a serious threat to human health. The high frequency of affected detected in our study raises a cause for concern. Determining its presence and the most affected geography in any country will aid in charting guidelines on controlling its release as well as exposure.

Free radicals produced by exposure to heavy particles have been found to produce motor and cognitive behavioral toxicity effects in rats similar to those found during aging. The present research was designed to investigate the effects of exposure to 56Fe particles on the ability of male Sprague-Dawley rats to detect novel arrangements in a given environment. Using a test of spatial memory previously demonstrated to be sensitive to aging, open field activity and reaction to spatial and non-spatial changes were measured in a group that received a dose of 1.5 Gy (n=10) of 56Fe heavy particle radiation or in non-radiated controls (n=10). Animals irradiated with 1.5 Gy of 56Fe particles exhibited some age-like effects in rats tested, even though they were, for the most part, subtle. Animals took longer to enter, visited less and spent significantly less time in the middle and the center portions of the open field, independently of total frequency and duration of activity of both groups. Likewise, irradiated subjects spend significantly more time exploring novel objects placed in the open field than did controls. However, irradiated subjects did not vary from controls in their exploration patterns when objects in the open field were spatially rearranged. Thus, irradiation with a dose of 1.5 Gy of 56Fe high-energy particle radiation elicited age-like effects in general open field exploratory behavior, but did not elicit age-like effects during the spatial and non-spatial rearrangement tasks.

Dental technicians are exposed to various dusts in working laboratories. This study was conducted to measure level of silica in the respirable dust generated from dental fixed prosthodontics manufacturing processes using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and to compare their occurrence of respiratory symptoms with that of non-dental hospital workers (control group). Respirable dusts were personally sampled from dental technicians working at dental laboratories in Seoul Korea according to NIOSH Method 0600. Fifty personal samples were obtained during porcelain or polishing process and weighed by a gravimetric method. Concentration of respirable dust was 651 +/- 548 microg/m3 (Mean +/- SD) with highest concentration of 2,874 microg/m3 during the porcelain process and 725 +/- 414 microg/m3 with highest concentration of 1,764 microg/m3 during the polishing process. Concentration of silica was 6.51 +/- 6.07 microg/m3 with 18.85 microg/m3 highest and 14.88 +/- 11.21 microg/m3 with 50.98 microg/m3 highest for the porcelain and polishing process, respectively. Level of silica contents in the dust was 0.81% and 1.66% for the porcelain and polishing process, respectively. The level of silica contents and silica concentration were significantly different between the two processes. Comparing prevalence of respiratory symptoms between non-smoking seventeen dental technicians and thirty-five control workers, wheezing and rhinorrhea were significantly more manifested in the dental technicians than the controls. Total frequency of respiratory symptoms was also significantly higher in the dental technicians than the controls.

Heart rate (HR) variability is important with respect to disease prognosis and the effects of drugs. Lorenz scatterplots provide a simple way to evaluate HR variability visually. The relation of Lorenz scatterplots to frequency-domain HR variability was examined in 75 Holter recordings and in simulated HR trends. The length of Lorenz scatterplots was double-exponentially correlated with total frequency and very-low frequency powers, with correlation coefficients (r) of 0.88. The width of Lorenz scatterplots was highly correlated with the high frequency power (r = 0.98). The sum of the width and length of Lorenz scatterplots was highly correlated with the total frequency power (r = 0.92). Identical results were obtained when simulated HR trends were used. In conclusion, Lorenz scatterplots provide a simple way to estimate the frequency-domain HR variability.

In a 5-y retrospective follow-up study in southern Sweden that initially included1000 individuals with previously diagnosed erythema migrans, factors that influenced the risk of reinfection with Lyme borreliosis were elucidated. The total frequency of reinfection was 4% and the number of tick bites influenced the risk of reinfection: those bitten10 times during the observation period had a 4-8-fold increased risk compared with those bitten5 times. Women manifested to a greater extent than men although both genders were bitten equally by ticks, thus indicating that women may be more susceptible to reinfection. All reinfected women were44 y old. The county of Kalmar including Oland was found to be highly endemic for reinfection with Lyme borreliosis. Thus the number of tick bites, gender, age and study area influenced the risk of reinfection.

A standard gentamicin dosage regimen intended to result in fewer trough concentrations of >2 microg/mL was studied. At a neonatal intensive care unit, gentamicin dosage guidelines of 2.5 mg/kg (as the sulfate) administered i.v. over 30 minutes every 12, 18, or 24 hours to neonates with a gestational age (GA) of > or =30 weeks were resulting in some relatively high trough serum concentrations (>2 microg/mL). Pharmacokinetic values derived for this baseline group were used to predict the gentamicin concentrations that would result from a standard regimen of gentamicin 3.5 mg/kg i.v. over 30 minutes every 24 hours. No patient in the baseline group was predicted to have a trough of >2 microg/mL with the new regimen, which was then approved for routine use. The new regimen was used for every neonate with a GA of > or =30 weeks who was admitted and treated with gentamicin (the protocol group). One set of concentrations was collected for each infant. Compared with the baseline group, the protocol group had significantly lower trough and significantly higher peak gentamicin concentrations. The total frequency of high troughs in the baseline group (23 [33%] of 69 patients) differed significantly from that in the protocol group (3 [4%] of 74 patients). No patient had or developed renal impairment. A gentamicin dosage protocol of 3.5 mg/kg every 24 hours for neonates with a GA of > or =30 weeks resulted in higher gentamicin peaks, lower troughs, and a lower frequency of troughs of >2 microg/mL, compared with previous dosage practice.

The effect of a piped water supply on human water contact in a Schistosoma haematobium-endemic area in Coast Province, Kenya was studied. After the construction of five community standpipes and one shower unit, there was a 35.1% reduction in the number of people observed using river water, a 44.1% reduction in the frequency of contact with river water, and a 25.4% reduction in the amount of contact. The frequency of river water contact per person also decreased significantly, but the amount of contact per person did not decrease. The total frequency of contact decreased significantly except for washing clothes by the river, washing utensils, and fishing. The frequency per person did not change for most of the activities and significantly increased for washing clothes. The frequency of river water contact in households with high piped water consumption showed a significant decrease compared with those with low piped water consumption. The volume of consumption of piped water was inversely proportional to the distance from the home to the community standpipe. These results indicate that in the study area, the effect of a piped water supply on river water contact behavior was heterologous while the total river water contact decreased significantly, and that the piped water had a beneficial effect on some villagers but very little effect on others., American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 56(2), pp.118-126; 1997

The role of the ram effect on the reproductive performance of ewes that have initiated estrous cycles following lambing in combination with synchronization of estrus using PGF(2α) was examined. A total of 1264 Corriedale × Merino ewes in the breeding season (March-April) were allocated to one of three treatments. The control group (PG2) of ewes (n=415) were in permanent direct contact with vasectomized rams throughout the experiment from 60 d prior to the administration of the first luteolytic dose of PGF(2α) which was followed by a second dose 13 d later (Day 0 of the experiment). Ewes assigned to the other two treatments remained isolated from rams until Day 0. In the second treatment, ewes (PG2RE; n=445) were administered PGF(2α) in the same manner and were joined with vasectomized rams at Day 0. Ewes allocated to the third treatment (PGRE; n=404) did not receive the second dose of PGF(2α) but were introduced to vasectomized rams on Day 0. Sexual receptivity, as indicated by tail-head marking, was recorded until d 11. More PG2RE ewes (407/445; 92%) were observed in estrus by Day 11 than occurred for PG2 ewes (353/415; 85%; P=0.003). 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) can cause a high percentage of cleft palate in fetuses when administered during organogenesis in certain strains of mice including C57BL/6J. In this study, folic acid (FA) was tested for antiteratogenic effects on TCDD-induced cleft palate in fetal mice. The pregnant C57BL/6J mice were dosed with 24 µg TCDD/kg and/or 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg FA/kg body weight on gestation day (GD) 10. The control group mice received 50 mL sesame oil/kg body weight on GD10. The mice were sacrificed on GD12.5, GD13.5, GD14.5, GD15.5, and GD16.5. The harvested embryos were examined to detect the incidence of cleft palate and the developing palatal shelves on different phases were investigated morphologically and histologically among different groups. Total frequency of clefts was 55.56% in TCDD group and 17.50% (5 mg), 42.85% (10 mg), 42.10% (20 mg), 28.26% (40 mg) in TCDD + FA groups. FA (5 mg) reduced the incidence of the cleft palate from 55.56% to 17.50% (p = 0.005). There were no significant differences between the TCDD group and 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg TCDD + FA groups. Based on the these results, the present study suggests that FA can reduce the incidence of 2,3,7,8-TCDD-indued cleft palate in mice.

The age effect on coherence has been studied in control (98) and learning-disabled (LD, 54) school-aged children (from 6.0 to 16.8 years old). The EEG recordings were made at rest in 15 leads, and 105 pairwise combinations for coherence were calculated (each lead was compared with all the rest) for delta, theta, alpha, beta and total frequency bands. A significant increase of coherence with age was found in both groups, witha different pattern of maturation. In the control group, a significant increase with age was found in the coherences between posterior regions and vertex (Cz). A significant decrease with age in the coherence between frontal areas was observed, especially in the theta band. The LD group showed a different pattern: no significant relation with age was found in the coherence between any lead and vertex. A high effect of age on coherence between temporal regions was observed with a predominance of the left side in comparison with the contralateral and the ipsilateral. No decrease in frontal coherence was found: in the same region where the control group showed negative values with age, the LD groups had no age effect. The results obtained are discussed as differences in brain organization, in myelogenesis and synaptogenesis and an explanation of the etiology of LD is proposed.

Acutely infected animals show a set of non-specific behavioral changes known as sickness behavior. Recent studies have shown that occurrence of sickness behavior is regulated according to a motivational perspective. Thus, the display of sickness behavior may compete with display of other behaviors. In this work, we sought to determine the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration (15 microg/mouse i.p.) in the social behavior of dominant and submissive mice. Results showed that social hierarchy influences the expression of sickness behavior. While dominant mice treated with LPS showed an expected reduction in total frequency of behaviors displayed, such decrease did not happen following the same treatment to submissive mice. Similar results occurred regarding social and aggressive behavior. The use of a motivational perspective provides the assumption that, due to their high social ranking, dominant mice were able to prioritize recuperative behavior. Submissive mice, on the other hand, even though treated with LPS, seemed to essentially focus on social defensive behaviors since they remained in the presence of the dominant individuals. Effects of sickness on the hierarchical organization of mice remain to be further investigated.

Background. Little is known about the health of Chamorros residing in the United States. Methods. The Chamorro Directory International and CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were used to assess behavioral risk factors and health needs of San Diego's Chamorro women. Results. Of 128 Chamorro women, 42.2% reported having a total frequency of five or more fruits and vegetables daily, 54.5% reported being current on their colorectal cancer screening, and 9.4% smoke. Conclusions. While this sample of Chamorro women reported higher rates of healthpromoting practices than nationwide averages, significant health improvement opportunities remain.

Accelerometric activity during rest and posture was quantified in the upper dominant limb of 14 patients with primary or secondary dystonia and five healthy control subjects. Data were recorded before and after bilateral implantation of the stimulating electrodes in the Globus Pallidus internus. Clinical evaluation was based on the Burke-Marsden-Fahn's Dystonia Rating Scale (BMFDRS). For the patient group, I(t), the integral (i.e. area) of the acceleration power spectrum over the total frequency range (0.6-16 Hz) decreased as the clinical state of the patients improved following deep brain stimulation (p0.01) during rest and posture. Ten days after surgery, there were no I(t) differences between control subjects and patients (p0.05). A significant correlation was found between the global BMFDRS scores and I(t) for rest (p0.01) but not for posture. No significant correlation was found between I(t) and a partial BMFDRS score for the right arm for rest or posture. The integral I(t) provides a valid indicator of the motor activity generated by the arm of the patient but further analyses are needed to monitor patients' progress not only during their hospitalization but also after they are released from the hospital, and to understand why this measure does not correlate with partial BMFDRS scores.

This study was performed to assess the effects of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on the ultra-low (ULF) and very low (VLF) frequency components of heart rate variability (HRV). Forty-nine CABG patients (aged from 38 to 77 years) were examined by 24-h ambulatory electrocardiographic (AECG) monitoring, both preoperatively and 4 weeks after CABG. HRV spectral components were obtained by maximum entropy method analysis. Then the ULF, VLF, low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF) and total frequency (TF) components were compared before and after CABG. The average 24-h heart rate increased significantly after CABG (69+/-11.5 vs 82.9+/-10.9 beats per minute [bpm], P0.0001). The power of the ULF, VLF, and LF spectral components showed a decrease after surgery (2,859.9 vs 1,601.2 ms2, P0.0001, 1,215.0 vs 572.3 ms2, P0.0001, and 260.3 vs 125.9 ms2, P0.002, respectively), but the HF power did not show any significant change (98.7 vs 125.9 ms2, NS). Analysis of the normalized ratio of the ULF component (ULF/TF ratio) revealed a significant increase postoperatively (0.6496+/-0.0931 vs 0.7003+/-0.1338, P0.0001), but the VLF/TF and LF/TF ratios decreased after CABG (from 0.2671+/-0.0689 to 0.2040+/-0.0832, P0.0001 and from 0.0568+/-0.0290 to 0.0429+/-0.0232, P0.0088, respectively). In contrast, there was no significant alteration in the HF/TF ratio. These results suggest that recovery of cardiac autonomic activity is delayed after surgery. However, improvement of the ULF/TF ratio, one of the prognostic indicators for patients with cardiac disease, should be related to the relief of myocardial ischemia by CABG.

Semen from stallions with equal fertility at natural services, but yielding semen with either satisfactory or poor fertilizing capability after freezing and thawing, was processed for scanning electron microscopy before and after freezing and thawing. In all fresh semen samples the following three categories of acrosomal defect were noticed: (1) minor fenestrations of the plasma membrane (PM) and outer acrosomal membrane (OAM), (2) complete vesiculation and loss of PM and OAM and (3) lack of a large circular part of PM and OAM. The frequency of these defects ranged from 15% to 27%. All frozen and thawed samples displayed defects of categories 1-3 at similar frequencies as the fresh ones. However, additional defects categorized as: (4) major fenestrations of PM and OAM and (5) complete vesiculation of PM and OAM without loss of the vesicles were noted upon freezing and thawing. The total frequency of defects categorized as 4 and 5 ranged from 8% to 21%, and they seemed to be more frequent in stallions with poor fertility after freezing and thawing although the difference was not significant. Moreover, a particular defect categorized as (6) loosening of the whole acrosomal cap was found exclusively in stallions yielding semen with poor freezability.

We examined the influence of the amniotic sac on spontaneous movement in late gestation fetal rats. Using techniques for in vivo observation of fetal behavior, Day 21 rat fetuses were exteriorized from the uterus, with umbilical connections to the dam intact, and videotaped for 15 min either: (a) through the intact amniotic membranes, or (b) following removal of the membranes. Analysis of fetal behavior categories replicated the findings of previous investigators: Movements of the head, forelimbs, and rearlimbs were significantly increased by sac removal, as was the total frequency of behavior categories and the simultaneous occurrence of different behavior categories. Frame-by-frame analysis of videotaped behavior revealed that amniotic sac removal increased the frequency of movement bouts without altering the overall amount of time that fetuses spent moving. Movement bout durations ranged from 50 msec to 70 s. The average duration of movement bouts was significantly reduced for fetuses lacking the amniotic sac as compared to fetuses within the sac, as was the overall distribution of movement bout durations. Frequency distributions of movement bout durations and interbout interval (IBIS) revealed that sac removal significantly increased the occurrence of short (1-2 s) movement bouts and reduced the frequency of protracted movement bouts and interbout intervals (> 10-s duration). Taken together, these findings indicate that the quantitative dimensions of fetal rat movements are influenced by proximal features of the uterine environment. During prenatal life, the amniotic sac appears to sustain movement, possibly by providing proprioceptive feedback or physical support to the fetus, or by regulating the chemical milieu. 0 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The aim of the present investigation was to assess the frequency of technical failures as well as the 4-year results of endodontic treatment in non-vital incisors with post-traumatically reduced pulpal lumen. In 54 teeth the smallest width of the root canal was measured and classified as 0. less than or equal 0.1, greater than 0.1- less than or equal to 0.2 or greater than 0.2 mm. The total frequency of failures was 20%. In upper incisors it was 15-17% in the classes up to a root canal width of 0.2 mm. In lower incisors with no or only partially visible root canal it was 71% and in the class up to 0.1 mm 10%, the difference being significant at the 5% level. The total frequency of healing after 4 years was 80%, while in teeth with a technical failure at the time of treatment the frequency was 50%. The difference between the group without and that with technical failures was statistically significant at the 5% level.

This article replicates for Kinsey's male sample the decade-of-birth analyses provided in the Kinsey "female volume." Five generations of male respondents are compared in terms of total frequency of sexual activity, and frequency and incidence of nine specific categories of sexual behavior. Inj general, unmarried males born after 1900 experienced more frequent sexual outlet than did nineteenth-century males. Additionally, the proportion of total outlet devoted to various specific activities varied by birth decade. Solitary masturbation rose somewhat spectacularly in significance with the passing decades, while nocturnal emissions and animal contacts declined. Orgasms provided by heterosexual activities increased slightly for the early twentieth-century generations, but then declined to a point below their nineteenth-century levels. Although homosexual contacts accounted for a constant percentage of total outlet for unmarried males over the five generations, more males in each succeeding generation were actively engaging in homosexual activity, at least on a casual basis. Similarly, although heterosexual contacts accounted for a smaller percentage of all activity among the unmarried in later generations, more of the later-born males had engaged in such activity at least once. For married males, on the other hand, frequency of total outlet was unaffected by generation. A large and stable proportion of this outlet was provided by marital coitus. Although more males in later generations had experienced extramarital contacts, such activities accounted for a small and resonably stable proportion of total outlet, when frquency of occurrence was considered. Masturbation gained in significance, while nocturnal emissions and homosexual contacts declined, and animal contacts among the married were almost nonexistent in all generations.

Five hundred patients receiving one of three different formulations of etomidate were observed on the 2nd and 3rd days after operation for possible venous sequelae. The total frequency of sequelae was 8% or more, the greatest being with the propylene glycol formulation (23%). Formulation of the drug and total dose employed were the most important factors influencing venous sequelae, which were not related to pain on injection.

It has been suggested that an assay for sperm morphology might prove useful as an initial screen in evaluating men at risk for an increased frequency of sperm chromosomal abnormalities. In this study, the technique for analysis of human sperm chromosomes after penetration of hamster eggs was employed to determine whether there is an association between the frequency of chromosomally and morphologically abnormal sperm. 30 healthy men of proven fertility were studied. The ages of the donors ranged from 22 to 55 years. The analysis was performed “blindly” so that the technician analysing the chromosome spreads had no knowledge of the age of the donors or of the individual frequencies of morphologically abnormal sperm. There was no significant relationship between the proportion of morphologically abnormal sperm and the proportion of chromosomally abnormal sperm when controlled for age. This was true for the total frequency of chromosomal abnormalities and also for numerical and structural chromosomal abnormalities. These results suggest that an assay of morphology is not a good indication of chromosomal normality in human sperm.

Data collection forms of 50,165 routine smears were examined, and of these 47,577 were considered for this study. Viral cytological lesions (VL) were observed in 101 cases: of these, 19 were associated with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. The total frequency of VL was 0.21%, with the peak in the teenager group (0.49%). The frequency of CIN among VL showed an overall frequency of 18.8 %: this was null under 21 years of age and highest (50 %) between 51 and 60 years of age. The frequency of VL in relation to clinical provenance of patients and the season of the year did not attain significance.

Summary The frequencies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki of rare variants (represented in less than 2 % of the individuals surveyed) is summarized for a series of 22 proteins (25 polypeptides). The average number of persons examined for each protein was 3312. There are three pairs of homologous proteins in the series: PGM, and PGM, CA I and CA 11, and HGB A and A,. Only for the first pair is there a significant difference between the two in the total frequency and number of different kinds of variants; it is suggested this may reflect differences in the mutation rates of the corresponding structural genes. For 23 of these polypeptides, comparable data are available for British Caucasians. The average frequency of variants for loci in common in the two series is 2.0/1000 person determinations for Japanese and 1.6/1000 for Caucasoids. At two loci (PGMl and PHI) there were significantly more variants in Japanese than in British; these two loci account for the greater average frequency of variants in Japanese. However, a conservative comparison of number of diflerent variants (electromorphs) encountered, using the 0 statistic of Ewens (1972), yields no significant difference for any of the 22 possible contrasts. The potential usefulness of data of this type in reaching conclusions regarding comparability of mutation rates in two populations is discussed. For the present, the fact that one electromorph may shelter multiple different amino acid substitutions in a protein limits the inferences to be drawn from such contrasts. In the mid-1960.s, reports came from Scotland and England of a high frequency of gonosomal aberrations among male patients in maximum security hospitals (Jacobs et al., 1965; Casey et al., 1966). This led to a lively discussion. If these observations could be generalized so as to apply also to similar institutions in other countries, the question would be whether gonosomal aneuploidy had any bearing on the development of criminality and psychic diseases? In particular, the significance of a double Y condition as a predisposing factor was called in question. Unfortunately, from the outset the discussion became too categorical and oversimplified. When in subsequent studies socially well-adjusted individuals of normal intelligence were found, it was doubted whether aneuploidy had any importance at all. In a survey as recent as 1972, for example, Owen questions whether there is any connection at all between excess Y-chromosomes and behaviour disorders and mental diseases. Hook (1973), on the contrary, in a somewhat more detailed compilation, shows that there is a clear connection between the occurrence of double Y-chromosomes and individuals whom he defines as ‘mental-penal’. A common feature in all the literature, however, is that almost all writers insist on the importance of more research in this field.

An open study with iohexol (Omnipaque) in cervical myelography has been performed in 20 patients to evaluate the properties and neurotoxicity of this new water soluble contrast medium. The image quality was good (30%) or excellent (70%) in all cases. The frequency of headache was 25%. No EEG changes were severe and the total frequency was 20%. We conclude that this study supports other reports of iohexol having a low neurotoxicity and is well suited for intrathecal use.

The frequency and type of chromosome abnormalities were analyzed in 917 female pronuclei in Syrian hamster eggs fertilized by human sperm. Analysis at this stage allows detection of errors which have occurred during meiosis I and II. The chromosomes were Q-banded to identify individual chromosomes and detect subtle alterations. Thirty-three (3.6%) of the hamster egg complements were abnormal: 19 (2.1%) were hypohaploid, seven (0.76%) were hyperhaploid, two (0.2%) had double aneuploidy, and five (0.5%) had a structural chromosome abnormality. Since there were significantly more hypohaploid than hyperhaploid complements, a conservative estimate of aneuploidy can be derived by doubling the frequency of hyperhaploid complements. Thus a minimal estimate of aneuploidy (single, 1.5%, and double, 0.2%) is 1.7% and a minimal estimate of the total frequency of abnormalities is 2.2%. All chromosome groups were represented among the aneuploid complements suggesting that all chromosomes are susceptible to non-disjunction.

The treatment of burn injuries must be on two fronts. Within surgical treatment great advances have been made, and the next improvements must doubtless be made in the form of better prophylaxis.There is an ample literature on this subject, but most analyses are based upon the study of in-patients, while little is known about the total frequency of burn injuries in a general population.In the municipality of Copenhagen the treatment of burns has been centralized for 50 years, and the municipality comprises a well-defined geographical area with a population of 700,000 who must be considered representative of the whole of Denmark.For social and insurance reasons even the slightest injuries are treated by doctors, and there is a possibility of recording all persons who have sought medical aid for burn injuries.Burn injuries entail 8 deaths per annum, while 230 persons require admissions, 650 patients are treated in the out-patient department for burns and 1400 in other casualty wards, while the general practi...

This study determined the total frequency of patients with AIDS and ophthalmologic problems before and after the introduction of combined highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), regardless of the use of this treatment; it also determined the frequency of external ocular diseases, intraocular infections and inflammations, and problems of the anterior portion of the optic nerve in these two groups of patients; and it determined the differences in the frequency of ophthalmologic problems in patients receiving HAART or not. This was a retrospective study of 207 patients examined using the same protocol, from June 1995 to February 1998 (n=58, pre-HAART era) and from March 1998 to May 2005 (n=149, HAART era). The frequency of ophthalmologic problems was significantly higher in the pre-HAART group, with a predominance of intraocular infections and inflammations. Comparison of patients receiving HAART or not revealed that ocular involvement tended to be reduced in the treated group and that treatment was effective in preventing infectious diseases; however, the prevalence of external ocular diseases was similar in the patients receiving HAART or not. As a consequence of HAART, we observed a reduction in the frequency of ocular problems, especially intraocular infections and inflammations. However, this benefic influence was less important in the ocular surface or in external ocular disease.

Under culture conditions suitable for the expression of the fragile site Xq27, "nonspecific" telomeric structural changes similar to the "specific" fra(X) formation occurred apparently on every chromosome arm. Significant differences between individuals seem to exist. The total frequency of nonspecific terminal lesions not located on the long arm of the X chromosome was 0.22 +/- 0.17 per cell in 37 cultures examined. If telomeric lesions on Xq occur in more than 0.7% of the cells from a single culture in males and more than 1.5% of the cells from a single culture in females, then this probably indicates a specific fra(X) expression. Lower percentages may be the result of nonspecific telomeric structural changes in q. These are expected to occur in the normal X as well and may, therefore, give rise to false positive diagnoses in the detection of hemi-, and hetero-, and perhaps also homozygous fra(X) carriers.

Metoprolol slow-release tablets (Durules®), 200 mg, given once daily in the morning were compared with placebo in the prophylaxis of classic migraine. The trial comprised eight Scandinavian neurologic centres and was designed as a double-blind cross-over study with 4 weeks' run-in, four weeks washout, and 8 weeks of either treatment. Seventy-seven patients with two to eight migraine attacks per month were entered in the trial, and 73 completed it. A total of 1119 attacks with aura symptoms and 374 without were recorded. Metoprolol was significantly better than placebo with regard to the total frequency of attacks (1.8 versus 2.5 attacks/4 weeks), mean duration of attacks (6.0 versus 8.0 h/attack), mean global rating, and consumption of analgesics per attack: Similar differences could be shown for attacks with aura symptoms alone, except for the duration of attacks. Metoprolol is the first drug for which a prophylactic effect in classic migraine has been convincingly demonstrated.

Hydrocephalic rats were found in a breeding colony of Csk: Wistar-Imamichi strain rats. In males, the hydrocephalus were serious and could be detected from 7 days after birth. Survival was 3-4 weeks. In females, the hydrocephalus was moderate, there was no abnormal external appearance, and the rats were able to mature. Ventricular dilatation was excessive in males but moderate in females. The total frequency of hydrocephalus was 34.3% in both males and females. Breeding data indicated that this disease is heritable and is single dominant and X-linked (symbol, Hyd). The female moderate hydrocephalics could be detected by progeny tests without examining brain sections. No evidence of developmental anomaly was observed in the ventricles. This hydrocephalus was classified as being of the communicating type, and this strain was named the Hyd strain as an animal model for human hydrocephalus.

In a necropsy series from Malmo of 2,218 subjects above 20 years of age, and composing 88.2% of all Malmo residents above 20 who died during the period of investigation, the frequency of gastric and duodenal peptic ulcer disease (ulcer, scar or surgically treated peptic ulcer) was studied. The total frequency of peptic ulcer disease was 17.9% (20.9% in men and 14.7% in women). The condition was most common (25.4%) in men in the 50-59 year age group, after which the frequency declined. In women a constant high frequency (15-16%) was seen in all age groups above 60 years. Gastric ulcer (ulcer or scar) was found in 10.7% and duodenal ulcer in 5.5%. 16.1% of subjects with peptic ulcer disease had been subjected to surgical treatment, 22.8% of the men and 5.8% of the women.

The occurrence of third molar agenesis was recorded in a sample of 1,492 maxillary and 1,718 mandibular arches belonging to the prehistoric settlers of the Gan Canaria, Tenerife, and La Gomera Islands (Canary Islands). There were significant sex differences only in the Tenerife sample for the maxilla, the incidence in females being higher than in males. In the Gran Canaria sample, the total frequency (male and female combined) of third molar agenesis (individual count method) was 8.7% for the maxilla and 9.3% for the mandible. In the Tenerife and La Gomera samples, the frequencies were 11.1% and 10.7% for the maxilla and 14.6% and 13.3% for the mandible. In the Tenerife sample, the differences between both jaws were statistically significant. The incidence of missing third molars in the mandible was significantly higher in Tenerife than in Gran Canaria, but the other sample differences were statistically nonsignificant. Bilateral absence of third molars was observed in about two-thirds of the specimens examined. Some correlation between both jaws for the occurrence of third molar agenesis was found. The hypotheses that have been proposed in order to explain third molar agenesis in man are discussed. It is suggested that the loss of the third molar in Homo sapiens could be produced by a heterochronic phenomenon of postdisplacement, as a consequence of the phylogenetic tendency toward the delay of the onset of the third molar formation, and that the genetic factors responsible for the absence of these teeth could be related to the general process of delay in tooth formation.
