Tobacco smoking by young people is of great concern because it usually leads to regular smoking, nicotine addiction and quitting difficulties. Young people "hooked" by tobacco maintain the profits of the tobacco industry by replacing smokers who quit or die. If new generations could be tobacco-free, as supported by tobacco endgame strategies, the tobacco epidemic could end within decades. Smoking prevention programmes for teens are offered by schools with the aim to prevent or delay smoking onset. Among these, the Smoke Free Class Competition (SFC) was widely implemented in Europe. Its effectiveness yielded conflicting results, but it was only evaluated at short/medium term (6 - 18 months). The aim of this study is to evaluate its effectiveness after a longer follow-up (3 to 5 years) in order to allow enough time for the maturing of the students and the internalization of the experience and its contents. Fifteen classes were randomly sampled from two Italian high schools of Bologna province that regularly offered the SFC to first year students; 382 students (174 participating in the SFC and 208 controls) were retrospectively followed-up and provided their "smoking histories". At the end of their last year of school (after 5 years from the SFC), the percentage of students who stated that they were regular smokers was lower among the SFC students than in controls: 13.5% vs 32.9% (p=0.03). From the students' "smoking histories", statistically significant protective ORs were observed for SFC students at the end of 1st and 5th year: 0.42 (95% CI 0.19-0.93) and 0.32 (95% CI 0.11-0.91) respectively. Absence of smokers in the family was also a strongly statistically significant factor associated with being a non-smoker student. These results suggest that SFC may have a positive impact on lowering the prevalence of smoking in the long term (5 years).

Job satisfaction (JS) is an indicator of individual psychosocial health. Consistent evidence showed that voluntary extra-role behavior in organizations, namely organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), can also contribute to individual psychological health. JS has been found to positively influence employees’ OCB, and both JS and OCB have been found to predict employees’ task performance (TP). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether employees’ OCB mediates the relationship of JS with TP, taking into consideration gender as a potential moderator, and other sociodemographic and work-related characteristics as confounding variables. A total of 518 employees, 54.6% women, aged 19–66 years with a mean age of about 36 years, completed measures of JS, OCB, and TP. Results showed a partial mediation of OCB in the JS-TP relationship, which was invariant across gender. A potential practical implication of findings is that human resource managers and practitioners might ultimately benefit male and female employees’ well-being as well as the organizations’ productivity by developing targeted individual- and group-level trainings and interventions to enhance JS and OCB.

This study adopted a dyadic approach to explore the associations between social support and stress as mediated by coping among infertile couples. All these variables were infertility-specific. A total of 201 couples starting their first assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment completed self-reports of infertility-specific support from spouse and from social network, infertility-related coping with four strategies (active-avoidance, active-confronting, passive-avoidance, and meaning-based), and infertility stress. The actor-partner interdependence model was applied. Results indicated that dyadic associations between support and stress were either direct or mediated by individual or partner coping, with differences based on gender, source of support, and coping strategy. For both genders, greater support from spouse was associated with lower individual and partner stress directly and indirectly, through lower partner's use of active-avoidance coping. In men, the relationship between support from spouse and stress was also mediated by individual/partner avoidance coping strategies. As for support from social network, greater levels were directly associated with a lower partner stress in women and with higher individual stress in men. For both genders, the relationship between support from social network and stress was also mediated by active-confronting coping, which was associated with higher individual and partner stress. The findings suggest a potential protective role of support from spouse and an adverse effect of that from people outside the dyad. Interventions for couples starting ART treatment should focus on promoting infertility-related communication and support within the couple, which might help to reduce the use of infertility-specific maladaptive coping strategies. Future time perspective, perceived social support, and dispositional gratitude are topics of interest that positively influence people&rsquo, s psychological health. Although gratitude has been positively associated with future time perspective and social support, this is the first study to investigate its mediating role in the relationships of future time perspective with perceived social support. A convenience sample of 1256 adults (55.1% women), mean age 34.55 years (SD = 13.92), completed self-reported measures of future time perspective (conceptualized as remaining time and opportunities), dispositional gratitude, and received and given social support. Results indicated that higher dispositional gratitude mediated the relationship between the perception of more remaining time and opportunities and greater perception of received and given social support. These findings highlight the importance of considering dispositional characteristics to better understand the impact of perceived future on the individuals&rsquo, subjective experience of social exchanges. Interventions addressing future time perspective and dispositional gratitude might have beneficial effects on individuals&rsquo, social well-being.

Optimism and self-efficacy have been associated with psychological health. Empathy has also been found to have a unique role in community health volunteering and promote positive functioning. This study investigated whether self-efficacy and optimism were associated with psychological health in terms of psychological and subjective well-being in healthcare volunteers. It also investigated whether empathy added to the explanation of psychological health, over and above that accounted for by self-efficacy and optimism. A convenience sample of 160 Italian clown doctors volunteering in various hospitals completed self-report measures of self-efficacy, optimism, empathy, psychological well-being, and subjective well-being. Results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that self-efficacy and optimism were associated with both outcomes and that aspects of empathy, such as others&rsquo, perspective taking and personal distress for others&rsquo, difficulties, added to the explanation of psychological health with opposite effects. The present study adds to previous research on the role of self-efficacy, optimism, and empathy for community health volunteers&rsquo, psychological health. It also offers suggestions regarding the training for this type of volunteer.

This study examines measurement invariance, reliability and scores differences of the Peer Aggressive and Reactive Behaviors Questionnaire (PARB-Q) across Italian and Brazilian children, gender and age. Participants were 587 Italian and 727 Brazilian children, aged 7-13 years from 12 elementary schools. The PARB-Q is a brief self-report instrument composed by two scales that assess aggressive behavior and reactions to peer aggression. Multigroup confirmatory factor analyses indicated full measurement invariance of the PARB-Q across groups based on country, gender and age, providing support for the unidimensionality of the first scale (direct peer aggression, PA) and a 3-factor model of the second scale (reactive aggression, RA; seeking teacher support, STS; internalizing reaction, IR). Reliability indices were good for all factors. Italian children reported a higher frequency of PA and a lower frequency of IR than the Brazilian children. Boys scored higher than girls on PA and RA, while girls scored higher than boys on STS and IR. Younger children reported a lower frequency of PA and a higher frequency of STS than older children. Results provide support for structure validity and reliability of the PARB-Q in two countries and information on differences related to gender, age and culture in peer relationships in elementary school.

Cynical hostility and the metabolic syndrome: A case-control study. P. Gremigni. Background: Evidence suggests that metabolic syn- drome and hostility are independent risk factors for the de- velopment of coronary heart disease. Recently, the com- bined effect of metabolic syndrome and hostility has shown to predict the incidence of myocardial infarction. This study tested whether cynical hostility was associated with the metabolic syndrome in a sample of Italian adults. Methods: 992 subjects participated in the study. Among them, 546 participants were classified as having metabolic syndrome and 446 as controls, not having any of the risk factors that constitute the metabolic syndrome. Cynicism, the cognitive component of hostility, was measured with a self-report questionnaire derived from the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale. Metabolic syndrome was based on having the following risk factors: obesity, hyperinsulinemia, dys- lipidemia, and elevated arterial blood pressure. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in cognitive function following carotid endarterectomy (CEA). In 74 asymptomatic CEA patients cognitive function, depression, laterality and severity of stenosis, cerebral Computer Tomography results, and ischemic heart diseases were measured preoperatively. The sample included 31 patients with dementia and 43 patients without any symptom of dementia. Cognitive function was measured again at 3 months postoperatively using a brief standardised test. After controlling for cognitive function and depression at baseline, cognitive function improved significantly at 3 months after CEA in both patients with and without dementia. CEA may offer more than reduced stroke risk to patients, independent of cognitive function.

To contribute to the application of the Childhood Atopic Dermatitis Impact Scale (CADIS), 135 Italian parents of children with atopic dermatitis (AD) aged birth to 6 years completed: CADIS, Infants Dermatitis Quality of Life Index (IDQOL) or Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI), and Dermatitis Family Impact 10-item questionnaire (DFI). A subsample of 66 caregivers completed the CADIS again, 48 hours later. Disease severity was measured with the Severity Scoring of Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index. Exploratory factor analyses almost replicated the general factor structure of the original CADIS, established on a US sample. However, some differences emerged, probably due to cultural differences. A reduced version of the original CADIS was also obtained, based on the exploratory factor analyses, to facilitate use in clinical settings. The original and the shorter versions were tested for reliability: overall Cronbach's α and test-retest reliability for the child- and parent-related scales were acceptable. Regarding concurrent validity, estimates showed the CADIS to correlate adequately with SCORAD, IDQOL-CDLQI, and DFI. Multiple comparison tests for discriminant validity revealed significant differences between extreme groups based on AD severity for all five domains of CADIS. The original CADIS showed adequate validity and reliability in Italy as well, and the shorter version showed promising psychometric properties.

SummaryWe investigated the psychological impact of testing for the presence of thrombophilic alterations. The enrolled subjects received counseling from a physician before blood sampling and after receiving results, with a view to provide clear information about the aim of thrombophilia screening (TS). Participants were requested to completea pre-test questionnaire during this interview and a post-test questionnaire 20 days after receiving theTS results. One hundred ninety-seven subjects completed the pre-test questionnaire and 140/197 (71.1%) returned the post-test one. The TS results were altered in 36 (25.7%, R506Q mutation n=19; G20210A mutation n=9; antithrombin deficiency n=1; LAC phenomenon n=4; hyperhomocysteinemia n=3) and normal in 104 subjects. We assessed: perceived health status (PHS), state of anxiety, health fears, depressive reactions, moods, perceived well-being, and perceived daily-life stress. For both groups, both at pre- and post-test, none of the psychological variable scores showed significant worsening, regardless of whether TS resulted altered or normal. Anxiety significantly (p≤0.05) decreased at post-test in the altered group and a nonsignificant improvement in PHS after TS result communication was recorded in both groups. Age was an important factor in mediating psychological impact. In conclusion, diagnosis of thrombophilic alterations seems to be well accepted in the short term and TS should not be discouraged for potential adverse psychological effects. However, the psychological impact over a longer period of receiving altered results needs to be further investigated. The relationship between absence of adverse psychological reactions and quality of counseling program provided before and after TS should also be investigated.
