Discusses the severity of malaria caused by infection with Plasmodium falciparum in the United Kingdom. 1592 confirmed cases reported to the Malaria Reference Laboratory in the year 2000; Discussion of patients with poor prognostic signs; Report that the schizonts of the parasite sequester and cause pathology, while the trophozoites are relatively insensitive to antimalarial treatment; Cases presented from the Hospital for Tropical Diseases to illustrate why the severity of falciparum malaria may be underestimated; Statement that severe malaria can occur even with low parasitemia; Complications of malaria including renal failure and acute lung injury; Immunity to malaria in persons brought up in regions in which malaria is endemic.
