Magnetostriction measurements in the mixed state of superconducting 2H-NbSe[SUB2] single crystals under in-plane magnetic fields 0 -- 12 T have revealed a peak on the magnetostriction versus magnetic field dependences in the vicinity of the upper critical field H[SUBc2]. The peak value of the longitudinal magnetostriction is higher by more than an order of magnitude in comparison with that of the transverse magnetostriction when measured along the hexagonal axis. Analysis of the measured field dependences of the magnetostriction and magnetization of 2H-NbSe allows one to relate the observed peculiarities of magnetostriction with the loss of order in the lattice of Abrikosov vortices, which occurs by a first-order phase transition. Magnetostriction measurements on 2H-NbSe[sub 2] single crystals in the temperature range 1.5-8 K in a magnetic field up to 14 T are reported. A peak and oscillations in the measured field dependences of magnetostriction are observed near H[sub c2]. The reversible and irreversible components are separated and analyzed in the region of peak. The scaling parameters are defined, and the contribution of the elastic constants dependence on magnetic field is demonstrated. The effect of mechanical tensile stresses 0≼σ≼62 MPa on the low-field (0≼H≼45 Oe) magnetization curves of the metallic glasses Fe[sub 100-x]B[sub x] (x=14,16,17,20) is studied at temperatures of 77 and 300 K. The correlation between the electronic structure of the glasses and their magnetostrictive sensitivity κ[sub s] is revealed: the eutectic metallic glass Fe[sub 83]B[sub 17], which possesses a special electronic structure with a 30% lower conduction (sp) electron density, has a value of κ[sub s] differing substantially from that of the other metallic glasses studied. Under low stresses (0≼σ≼22 MPa) the eutectic alloy possesses a magnetostrictive sensitivity κ[sub s](σ[sub 1]) which is higher than that of the rest of the alloys studied, while under high stresses (22 MPa≼σ≼62 MPa) its magnetostrictive sensitivity κ[sub s](σ[sub 2]) is close to zero. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. The transformations of the states of the magnetic and lattice subsystems of Gd[sub 100-x]Y[sub x] (x=0,5.5, 7.5, 10.2) alloys are studied at temperatures 5-370 K in magnetic fields up to 4 kOe. The temperature dependences of elastic moduli, thermal expansion, low-field magnetization, and magnetic anisotropy parameters are obtained. The linear spontaneous striction ΔL(T)/L=ξη[sup 2] is analyzed, and the effective order parameters η and magnetostrictive parameters ξ are evaluated for the four magnetic phases (canted ferromagnetic, deformed ferromagnetic helix, ferromagnetic helix, and the ferromagnetic cone, respectively): ξ[sub cf]=2.2x10[sup -5], ξ[sub dh]=-5.3x10[sup -5], ξ[sub fh]=7.1x10[sup -5], ξ[sub fc]=1.4x10[sup -3]. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
