We investigate the average configuration and structure of Saturn's magnetosphere in the nightside equatorial and high‐latitude regions. Electron data from the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer's Electron Spectrometer (CAPS‐ELS) is processed to produce a signal‐to‐noise ratio for the entire CAPS‐ELS time of operation at Saturn's magnetosphere. We investigate where the signal‐to‐noise ratio falls below 1 to identify regions in the magnetosphere where there is a significant depletion in the electron content. In the nightside equatorial region, we use this to find that the most planetward reconnection x‐line location is at 20–25 RS downtail from the planet in the midnight to dawn sector. We also find an equatorial dawn‐dusk asymmetry at a radial distance of >20 RS, which may indicate the presence of plasma‐depleted flux tubes returning to the dayside after reconnection in the tail. Furthermore, we find that the high‐latitude magnetosphere is predominantly in a state of constant plasma depletion and located on open field lines. We map the region of high‐latitude magnetosphere that is depleted of electrons to the polar cap to estimate the size and open flux content within the polar caps. The mean open flux content for the northern and southern polar caps are found to be 25 ± 5 and 32 ± 5 GWb, respectively. The average location of the open‐closed field boundary is found at invariant colatitudes of 12.7 ± 0.6° and 14.5 ± 0.6°. The northern boundary is modulated by planetary period oscillations more than the southern boundary. On 10 January 2001, Cassini briefly entered into the magnetosphere of Jupiter, en route to Saturn. During this excursion into the Jovian magnetosphere, the Cassini Magnetosphere Imaging Instrument/Charge‐Energy‐Mass Spectrometer detected oxygen and sulfur ions. While Charge‐Energy‐Mass Spectrometer can distinguish between oxygen and sulfur charge states directly, only 95.9 ± 2.9 keV/e ions were sampled during this interval, allowing for a long time integration of the tenuous outer magnetospheric (~200 RJ) plasma at one energy. For this brief interval for the 95.9 keV/e ions, 96% of oxygen ions were O+, with the other 4% as O2+, while 25% of the energetic sulfur ions were S+, 42% S2+, and 33% S3+. The S2+/O+ flux ratio was observed to be 0.35 (±0.06 Poisson error). Plain Language Summary: While en route to Saturn, Cassini received a gravity assist from Jupiter. In this paper, we focus on observations of the relative flux abundance of energetic (95.9 keV/e) heavy ions (oxygen and sulfur) by ion charge state (i.e., On+ and Sn+). These heavy ions would have largely originated from the moon Io, located 5.9 Jupiter radii (RJ) from Jupiter, while the observations from Cassini are near 200 RJ. By comparing the relative charge state zabundances of these heavy ions in the outer magnetosphere to previous observations closer to Io, we can study the evolution of plasma as it is transported away from Jupiter. These observations also serve to constrain modeling efforts and provide context to instruments incapable of independent ion mass and charge state determination. The Cassini spacecraft orbited the planet Saturn from July 2004 to September 2017, and its varied orbital trajectory took it across the magnetopause and bow shock boundaries multiple times, at varying radial distances, local times, latitudes, and phases of the solar cycle. Here we present a comprehensive list of these boundary crossings, derived primarily using data from the Cassini magnetometer instrument, with cross‐validation against the electron spectrometer data where available. There are a multitude of scientific avenues for exploitation of this list. In this work, we examine the variability in boundary location and use the crossing times in concert with models of the bow shock and magnetopause to infer the upstream solar wind dynamic pressure at the times of crossings. This analysis allows us to understand the limitations of the Cassini trajectory for studying boundary physics under a range of solar wind driving conditions. In addition, rapid traversals of the magnetosheath are used to estimate the range of speeds of boundary motion. The megaelectron volt proton radiation belts of Saturn are isolated from the middle and outer magnetosphere, and the source of these high‐energy protons is thought to be linked to the access of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) in the system. To validate this hypothesis, it is first of all necessary to determine the realistic spectrum of GCRs at Saturn. Previously, only analytical attempts were performed in order to calculate the GCR spectra. In this letter we provide for the first time the numerical solution for the determination of the GCR access to the upper atmosphere and rings of Saturn. The proposed method is based on the charged particle tracing technique. As a result the GCRs access energies to the atmosphere and to the equatorial plane of the magnetosphere as a function of radial distance to the planet were obtained and the GCRs spectra were reconstructed. Dependencies of the spectral parameters such as the time or the incidence direction were also obtained offering all necessary information for simulating the interaction of GCRs with the Saturnian system during different phases of the Cassini mission. Planetary magnetospheres receive plasma and energy from the Sun or moons of planets and consequently stretch magnetic field lines. The process may last for varied timescales at different planets. From time to time, energy is rapidly released in the magnetosphere and subsequently precipitated into the ionosphere and upper atmosphere. Usually, this energy dissipation is associated with magnetic dipolarization in the magnetosphere.This process is accompanied by plasma acceleration and field‐aligned current formation, and subsequently auroral emissions are often significantly enhanced. Using measurements from multiple instruments on board the Cassini spacecraft, we reveal that magnetic dipolarization events at Saturn could reoccur after one planetary rotation and name them as recurrent dipolarizations. Three events are presented, including one from the dayside magnetosphere, which has no known precedent with terrestrial magnetospheric observations. During these events, recurrent energizations of plasma (electrons or ions) were also detected, which clearly demonstrate that these processes shall not be simply attributed to modulation of planetary periodic oscillation, although we do not exclude the possibility that the planetary periodic oscillation may modulate other processes (e.g., magnetic reconnection) which energizes particles. We discuss the potential physical mechanisms for generating the recurrent dipolarization process in a comprehensive view, including aurora and energetic neutral atom emissions. Cassini has recently completed its 13-year mission at Saturn leaving a vast data set. A large interest among the scientific community is to investigate plasma waves and instabilities at Saturn. It is no longer feasible to manually search through Cassini’s vast data set to identify all such waves of interest. Thus, the feasibility of using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to identify plasma waves at Saturn is demonstrated using Cassini data. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained to identify low-frequency plasma waves that occur in the upstream region of Saturn using images constructed from the Cassini magnetometer time series data. By systematically varying the network architecture during training and validation, a CNN was obtained that can identify upstream waves with an accuracy of 94% ± 2%. The CNN’s high accuracy for wave identification demonstrates that it is, in fact, feasible to use ANNs to identify plasma waves at Saturn and by extension in other planetary and lunar plasma environments using spacecraft data. A statistical study of the energetic proton environment at Titan's orbit as captured by the MIMI/LEMMS and MIMI/CHEMS instruments is performed. The data analyzed cover all the dedicated flybys of Titan by Cassini as well as the orbit crossings that happen far from the moon. The energetic environment is found to be highly variable on timescales comparable to that of the duration of a flyby. Analysis of H+ ion fluxes reveals a weak asymmetry in Saturn local time with the highest fluxes occurring in the premidnight sector of the magnetosphere. A correlation between the energetic ion fluxes and the location of Cassini in the magnetosphere with respect to the center of the current sheet can be observed. Finally, an empirical model of proton spectra for energies above 20 keV is derived based on fits to Kappa distribution functions. This model can be used to better understand the interaction of Titan with the magnetosphere and the energy deposition by energetic particles below the main ionospheric peak. Plasma composition observations provide a useful mechanism for investigating plasma sources and subsequent evolution within planetary magnetospheres. While He++ is the second most abundant ion species in the solar wind, there are no known sources of He++ ions within the magnetosphere of Saturn, allowing He++ to serve as a tracer of solar wind ions within the Kronian magnetosphere. Meanwhile, water group ions (W+, consisting of O+, OH+, H2O+, and H3O+) and H2+, known to originate within the magnetosphere of Saturn, serve as a tracer of internally ionized plasma. In this paper, we investigate the relative abundances and properties of energetic (32–220 keV) ion species originating from sources within the magnetosphere and from the solar wind. Solar wind‐originating ions are observed to have significant relative abundance (up to ~0.05) in the midnight, dawn, and noon local time quadrants at high radial distances (~40, ~45, and ~20 RS, respectively). Several possible entry processes, such as reconnection and Kelvin‐Helmholtz instabilities, are outlined in this paper as well as a discussion of subsequent transport. Abstract: We investigate the azimuthal magnetic field signatures associated with high‐latitude field‐aligned currents observed during Cassini's F‐ring orbits (October 2016–April 2017). The overall ionospheric meridional current profiles in the northern and southern hemispheres, that is, the regions poleward and equatorward of the field‐aligned currents, differ most from the 2008 observations. We discuss these differences in terms of the seasonal change between data sets and local time (LT) differences, as the 2008 data cover the nightside while the F‐ring data cover the post‐dawn and dusk sectors in the northern and southern hemispheres, respectively. The F‐ring field‐aligned currents typically have a similar four current sheet structure to those in 2008. We investigate the properties of the current sheets and show that the field‐aligned currents in a hemisphere are modulated by that hemisphere's “planetary period oscillation” (PPO) systems. We separate the PPO‐independent and PPO‐related currents in both hemispheres using their opposite symmetry. The average PPO‐independent currents peak at ~1.5 MA/rad just equatorward of the open closed field line boundary, similar to the 2008 observations. However, the PPO‐related currents in both hemispheres are reduced by ~50% to ~0.4 MA/rad. This may be evidence of reduced PPO amplitudes, similar to the previously observed weaker equatorial oscillations at similar dayside LTs. We do not detect the PPO current systems' interhemispheric component, likely a result of the weaker PPO‐related currents and their closure within the magnetosphere. The Cassini Plasma Spectrometer instrument gathered thermal ion data at Saturn from 2004 to 2012, predominantly observing water group ions and protons. Plasma parameters, with uncertainties, for those two ion species are derived using a forward model of anisotropic convected Maxwellians moving at a shared velocity. The resulting data set is filtered by various selection criteria to produce a survey of plasma parameters derived within 10° of the equator at radial distances of 5.5 to 30 R S (1 R S = Saturn's radius). The previous 2008 work used a simpler method and had just 150 records over 5 orbits; this comprehensive survey has 9736 records over all 9 years. We present the results of this survey and compare them with a previous survey derived from numerical moments, highlighting the differences between the reported densities and temperatures from the two methods. Radial profiles of the plasma parameters in the inner and middle magnetospheres out to ≈22 R S are stable year by year, but variable at distances larger than 23 R S near the magnetopause. New results include proton densities increasing in the near magnetopause region, suggestive of plasma mixing; evidence for the global electric field in Saturn's inner magnetosphere extends out to ≈15 R S; no evidence for supercorotating plasma nor the middle magnetosphere 'plasma cam' feature is present; the thermal plasma β is found to exceed unity at equatorial distances greater than 15 R S. We presented a theory describing interaction between cold plasma and dust grain based on Cassini observations of Enceladus in Saturn's E ring. We assumed a finite-sized dust cloud with inside plasma to simulate the environment. The dust cloud that results from this scenario has a different potential than the surrounding plasma. Cassini's observations revealed the cold plasma characteristics of the Enceladus plume, which include a high plasma density for both electrons and ions at sufficient low temperature. Therefore, the electron fluid is incorporated in the cloud to form a quantum electron gas governed through Fermi-Dirac statistics. According to observations, more electrons bound to the dust grain results in a collective dust plasma interaction with surrounding cold plasma. Dust-plasma interaction predominantly occurred at negative sub-micrometer sized dust grain. • Using Cassini observations of Enceladus in Saturn's E ring as a groundwork, a theory is presented in this article. • The Enceladus plume has cold plasma characteristics. We considered ions as Boltzmannian distributed particles and Fermi-Dirac distribution is applicable for electrons. • We derived relations for the potential variation in the Enceladus plume region and the E-rings. This study investigates the processes that lead to the detection of split signatures in ion density during several crossings of the Cassini spacecraft through Titan's mid-range plasma tail (T9, T63, and T75). During each of these flybys, the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer detected Titan's ionospheric ion population twice; i.e., the spacecraft passed through two spatially separated regions where cold ions were detected, with the regions also being dominated by ions of different masses in the case of T9. Whether this filamented tail structure is an omnipresent feature of Titan's plasma interaction or a result of non-stationary upstream conditions during specific flybys is still unclear. To explain these features, we apply the hybrid simulation code AIKEF (kinetic ions and fluid electrons). Our model includes chemical reactions as well as a realistic photoionization model for a sophisticated description of the ionospheric composition of Titan. Our simulations show that the filamentation of Titan's tail is indeed a common feature of the moon's plasma interaction. Light ionospheric species escape along draped magnetic field lines to form a parabolically shaped filament structure, which is mainly seen in planes that contain the upstream magnetospheric magnetic field and the upstream flow direction. In addition, transport of ions of all species from the ramside towards downstream produces a cone structure behind Titan, with a region of decreased density inside and filaments of 1–2 R T ( R T =2575 km) thickness and enhanced density at the surface of the cone. Spacecraft trajectories that penetrate these structures allow for the detection of split signatures in the tail. The orientation of the upstream magnetic field and plasma flow as well as local time effects (i.e., Titan's orbital position) influence the location of the filaments in the tail and can also cause asymmetries in their sizes and densities. The detection of the split signatures along a spacecraft trajectory may therefore be made possible or completely prevented by moving the narrow filaments in or out of the way of the spacecraft. We present the impact rates of dust particles recorded by the Cosmic Dust Analyzer (CDA) aboard the Cassini spacecraft. The “dust counters” evaluate the quality of an impact and give rise to the apparent density of dust particles in space. The raw data is pre-selected and refined to a new structure that serves to a better investigation of densities, flows, and properties of interplanetary dust grains. Our data is corrected for the dead time of the instrument and corresponds to an assumed Kepler orbit (pointing of the sensitive area). The processed data are published on the website for the Magnetosphere and Plasma Science (MAPSview), where it can be correlated with other Cassini instruments. A sample is presented for the Titan flyby on DOY 250/2006. We find that the dust density peaks at two times, at least, in a void region between Titan and Rhea. Such features may point to extended clouds of small particles drifting slowly in space. These density clouds seem to be stable for as long as several months or few years before dispersing. Though Langmuir probes (LP) are designed to investigate cold plasma regions (e.g. ionospheres), a recent analysis revealed a strong sensitivity of the Cassini LP measurements to hundreds of eV electrons. These warm electrons impact the surface of the probe and generate a significant current of secondary electrons, that impacts both the DC level and the slope of the current–voltage curve of the LP (for negative potentials) through energetic contributions that may be modeled with a reasonable precision. We show here how to derive information about the incident warm electrons from the analysis of these energetic contributions, in the regions where the cold plasma component is small with an average temperature in the range ~ [ 100 – 500 ] eV . First, modeling the energetic contributions (based on the incident electron flux given by a single anode of the CAPS spectrometer) allows us to provide information about the pitch angle anisotropies of the incident hundreds of eV electrons. The modeling reveals indeed sometimes a large variability of the estimated maximum secondary electron yield (which is a constant for a surface material) needed to reproduce the observations. Such dispersions give evidence for strong pitch angle anisotropies of the incident electrons, and using a functional form of the pitch angle distribution even allows us to derive the real peak angle of the distribution. Second, rough estimates of the total electron temperature may be derived in the regions where the warm electrons are dominant and thus strongly influence the LP observations, i.e. when the average electron temperature is in the range ~ [ 100 – 500 ] eV . These regions may be identified from the LP observations through large positive values of the current–voltage slope at negative potentials. The estimated temperature may then be used to derive the electron density in the same region, with estimated densities between ~ 0.1 and a few particles / cm 3 (cc). The derived densities are in better agreement with the CAPS measurements than the values derived from the proxy technique ( Morooka et al., 2009 ) based on the floating potential of the LP. Both the electron temperature and the density estimates lie outside the classical capabilities of the LP, which are essentially n e > 5 cc and T e < 5 eV at Saturn. This approximate derivation technique may be used in the regions where the cold plasma component is small with an average temperature in the range ~ [ 100 – 500 ] eV , which occurs often in the L range 6.4–9.4 R S when Cassini is off the equator, but may occur anywhere in the magnetosphere. This technique may be all the more interesting since the CAPS instrument was shut down, and, though it cannot replace the CAPS instrument, the technique can provide useful information about the electron moments, with probably even better estimates than CAPS in some cases (when the plasma is strongly anisotropic). Finally, a simple modeling approach allows us to predict the impact of the energetic contributions on LP measurements in any plasma environment whose characteristics (density, temperature, etc.) are known. LP observations may thus be influenced by warm electrons in several planetary plasma regions in the solar system, and ambient magnetospheric electron density and temperature could be estimated in some of them (e.g. around several galilean satellites) through the use of Langmuir probes. We provide a global view of ~20 to 800 keV electron pitch angle distributions (PADs) close to Saturn’s current sheet using observations from the Cassini MIMI/LEMMS instrument. Previous work indicated that the nature of pitch angle distributions in Saturn’s inner to middle magnetosphere changes near the radial distance of 10 R S . This work confirms the existence of a PAD transition region. Here we go further and develop a new technique to statistically quantify the spatial profile of butterfly PADs as well as present new spatial trends on the isotropic PAD. Additionally, we perform a case study analysis and show the PADs exhibit strong energy dependent features throughout this transition region. We also present a diffusion theory model based on adiabatic transport, Coulomb interactions with Saturn’s neutral gas torus, and an energy dependent radial diffusion coefficient. A data-model comparison reveals that adiabatic transport is the dominant transport mechanism between ~8 to 12 R S , however interactions with Saturn’s neutral gas torus become dominant inside ~7 R S and govern the flux level of ~20 to 800 keV electrons. We have also found that field-aligned fluxes were not well reproduced by our modeling approach. We suggest that wave–particle interactions and/or a polar source of the energetic particles needs further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Contrary to the permanent MeV ion belts which are relatively stable in intensity over both short and long time scales and are modulated by a single Galactic Cosmic Ray driven source, the electron belts of Saturn appear to be much more complex in both structure and temporal evolution. In order to understand the responses of this system to the different factors that may control it (internal or external/solar sources) we study its long-term, temporal evolution. We achieve that by tracking the equatorial distance of the belts׳ outer boundary, using MIMI/LEMMS energetic charged particle observations over a period of more than 7 years. This boundary is defined at the distance that a selected count rate level is measured in a LEMMS channel that has the properties of an omnidirectional, integral energy detector. Simulated solar wind moments, energetic neutral atom (ENA) observations and solar irradiance data are used to support the analysis. In many cases, correlations of the different datasets are weak, suggesting that the electron belts are modulated in time scales that are much shorter than the sampling of the electron belt boundary (typically every 10–30 days). Still, we find several cases of persistent, long term and strong perturbations in the system that appear to have corresponding disturbances in the extension of the electron belts, even on such long time scales. From the analysis of those intervals we believe that we have established a solid link with the planetary ring current as the primary source of the electron belts of Saturn. This is concluded mostly on the basis of an extended ring current decay in 2011 (inferred through ENA observations), coinciding with a similar, unusual drop in the electron belt extension (and intensity). This means that the electron belts should reflect also the modulation of the ring current. We suggest that possible sources of long term modulation are both the solar UV irradiance of the Saturnian thermosphere and the solar wind. The former appears to acquire large values and exhibit significant changes during the period of the electron belt/ring current decay, while an approximate 2-week periodicity (characteristic for the case of two solar wind streams per solar rotation) appears in the electron belts in the form of recurrent expansions or intensifications. The latter finding indicates that external forcing by the solar wind can have a considerable impact on the planet׳s electron belts, contrary to the expectations that Saturn׳s magnetospheric dynamics are rotationally dominated and internally driven. Saturn's rich magnetospheric environment is unique in the solar system, with a large number of active magnetospheric processes and phenomena. Observations of this environment from the Cassini spacecraft has enabled the study of a magnetospheric system which strongly interacts with other components of the saturnian system: the planet, its rings, numerous satellites (icy moons and Titan) and various dust, neutral and plasma populations. Understanding these regions, their dynamics and equilibria, and how they interact with the rest of the system via the exchange of mass, momentum and energy is important in understanding the system as a whole. Such an understanding represents a challenge to theorists, modellers and observers. Studies of Saturn's magnetosphere based on Cassini data have revealed a system which is highly variable which has made understanding the physics of Saturn's magnetosphere all the more difficult. Cassini's combination of a comprehensive suite of magnetospheric fields and particles instruments with excellent orbital coverage of the saturnian system offers a unique opportunity for an in-depth study of the saturnian plasma and fields environment. In this paper knowledge of Saturn's equatorial magnetosphere will be presented and synthesised into a global picture. Data from the Cassini magnetometer, low-energy plasma spectrometers, energetic particle detectors, radio and plasma wave instrumentation, cosmic dust detectors, and the results of theory and modelling are combined to provide a multi-instrumental identification and characterisation of equatorial magnetospheric regions at Saturn. This work emphasises the physical processes at work in each region and at their boundaries. The result of this study is a map of Saturn's near equatorial magnetosphere, which represents a synthesis of our current understanding at the end of the Cassini Prime Mission of the global configuration of the equatorial magnetosphere. Abstract: We present RPWS Langmuir probe data from the third Enceladus flyby (E3) showing the presence of dusty plasma near Enceladus’ South Pole. There is a sharp rise in both the electron and ion number densities when the spacecraft traverses through Enceladus plume. The ion density near Enceladus is found to increase abruptly from about 102 cm−3 before the closest approach to 105 cm−3 just 30s after the closest approach, an amount two orders of magnitude higher than the electron density. Assuming that the inconsistency between the electron and ion number densities is due to the presence of dust particles that are collecting the missing electron charges, we present dusty plasma characteristics down to sub-micron particle sizes. By assuming a differential dust number density for a range in dust sizes and by making use of Langmuir probe data, the dust densities for certain lower limits in dust size distribution were estimated. In order to achieve the dust densities of micrometer and larger sized grains comparable to the ones reported in the literature, we show that the power law size distribution must hold down to at least 0.03μm such that the total differential number density is dominated by the smallest sub-micron sized grains. The total dust number density in Enceladus’ plume is of the order of 102 cm−3 reducing to 1cm−3 in the E-ring. The dust density for micrometer and larger sized grains is estimated to be about 10−4 cm−3 in the plume while it is about 10−6–10−7 cm−3 in the E-ring. Dust charge for micron sized grains is estimated to be about eight thousand electron charges reducing to below one hundred electron charges for 0.03μm sized grains. The effective dusty plasma Debye length is estimated and compared with inter-grain distance as well as the electron Debye length. The maximum dust charging time of 1.4h is found for 0.03μm sized grains just 1min before the closest approach. The charging time decreases substantially in the plume where it is only a fraction of a second for 1μm sized grains, 1s for 0.1μm sized grains and about 10s for 0.03μm sized grains. Abstract: The MIMI experiment (Magnetosphere Imaging Instrument) onboard Cassini is dedicated to the study of energetic particles, with in particular LEMMS analyzing charged particles, or the INCA detector which can image the Energetic Neutral Atoms produced by charge exchange collisions between cold neutrals and energetic ions. The MIMI experiment is thus well adapted to the study of the interaction between the Titan nitrogen rich atmosphere and the energetic Saturnian magnetospheric plasma. We analyze here the energetic protons at the Titan orbit crossings before January 2008 (MIMI-LEMMS data; 27–255keV), which are very dynamic, with tri-modal flux spectra and probably quasi-isotropic pitch angle distributions. We provide statistical parameters for the proton fluxes, leading to estimates of the average energy deposition into Titan''s atmosphere, before we discuss the possible influence of Titan on the magnetopause. We then analyze the H ENA images (24–55keV) during the Titan flybys before June 2006 to obtain a better diagnostic of the Titan interaction: the ENAs variability is mostly related to the magnetospheric variability (the exosphere being roughly stable) or the distance from the moon, the ENAs halo around Titan is very stable (corresponding to a lower limit for ENAs emission at the exobase), and strong asymmetries are observed, due to finite gyroradii effects for the parent ions. Abstract: We present a hybrid simulation study (kinetic ions, fluid electrons) of Titan''s plasma interaction during an excursion of this moon from Saturn''s magnetosphere into its magnetosheath, as observed for the first time during Cassini''s T32 flyby on 13 June 2007. In contrast to earlier simulations of Titan''s plasma environment under non-stationary upstream conditions, our model considers a difference in the flow directions of magnetospheric and magnetosheath plasma. Two complementary scenarios are investigated, with the flow directions of the impinging magnetospheric/magnetosheath plasmas being (A) antiparallel and (B) parallel. In both cases, our simulations show that due to the drastically reduced convection speed in the slow and dense heavy ion plasma near Titan, the satellite carries a bundle of “fossilized” magnetic field lines from the magnetosphere in the magnetosheath. Furthermore, the passage through Saturn''s magnetopause goes along with a disruption of Titan''s pick-up tail. Although the tail is not detached from the satellite, large clouds of heavy ion plasma are stripped of its outer flank, featuring a wave-like pattern. Whereas in case (B) under parallel flow conditions there is only a small retardation of about 5min between the passage of Titan through the magnetopause and the reconfiguration of the pick-up tail, the tail reconfiguration in the case (A) scenario is completed not until 25min after the magnetopause passage. The lifetime of fossil fields in the moon''s ionosphere is approximately 25min, regardless of whether parallel or antiparallel flow conditions are applied. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We present new results concerning electron temperature (T e ) mapping in the inner magnetosphere of Saturn (<7RS). The data are obtained by the Langmuir Probe (LP) instrument of the Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) investigation on board Cassini. The study is based on the fourteen first orbits around Saturn, and focus is on cold (<10eV) and dense (>5cm−3) electron populations in the inner plasma torus (plasma disc). Apart from a general increase with distance from Saturn and away from the equatorial plane (latitude), we identify a possibly anisotropic electron temperature in the plasma disc, as well as the presence of photoelectrons from the spacecraft or E-ring dust particles. A polytropic index of γ≈+0.4 is determined from the observations, which can be used in theoretical models of the plasma disc. We also infer local variations in T e near the equatorial plane, where the E-ring of dusty plasma and enhancements of water rich neutral gas exist, and determine constraints on the energy source required to heat the electrons in the plasma disc. We suggest that Joule heating or heating by low-frequency plasma waves as well as cooling by neutral gas and E-ring dust are involved in the energy balance, together with Coulomb collision heating by co-rotating ions. Abstract: We study the interaction of Saturn''s small, icy moon Enceladus and its plume with the corotating magnetospheric plasma by means of a 3D hybrid simulation model, which treats the ions as individual particles and the electrons as a massless, charge-neutralizing fluid. We analyze systematically how Enceladus’ internal conductivity and plasma absorption at the surface as well as charge exchange and pick-up in the plume contribute to the overall structure of the interaction region. Furthermore, we provide a comparison of our simulation results to data obtained by the Cassini magnetometer instrument. The major findings of this study are: (1) the magnetic field diffuses through the solid body of Enceladus almost unaffected, whereas plasma absorption gives rise to a symmetric depletion wake downstream of the moon; (2) due to the small gyroradii of the newly generated plume ions, the pick-up tail possesses a 2D structure; (3) the magnetic field lines drape around the plume, which triggers an Alfvén wing system that dominates the structure of Enceladus’ plasma environment. Inside the plume itself, a magnetic cavity is formed; (4) besides the reproduction of the key features of the observed magnetic field signatures, evidence for variability in the locations of the active jets and in the total gas content of the plume are shown. The Cassini ultraviolet imaging spectrograph investigation. Space Science Reviews 115, 299–361] onboard Cassini. Spatial coverage is built up by stepping the slit sequentially across the system (system scan). Data are obtained at a large range of space-craft–Saturn distances. The observed atomic hydrogen distribution is very broad, extending beyond in the equatorial plane, with the intensity increasing with decreasing distances to Saturn. The distribution displays persistent local-time asymmetries, and is seen connecting continuously to the upper atmosphere of the planet at sub-solar latitudes located well outside of the equatorial (ring) plane. This is consistent with the source of the atomic hydrogen being located at the top of the atmosphere on the sun-lit side of the planet on the southern hemisphere. In addition there are a number of temporally persistent features in the intensity distribution, indicating a complex hydrogen energy distribution. The emission from OI is generally distributed as a broad torus centered around although the position of the peak intensity can vary by as much as . There is significant intensity present out to . HST observations of hydroxyl (OH) are re-analyzed and display a distribution half as broad as that of oxygen, also centered at . The observed atomic oxygen distribution requires a sourcing of against loss due to charge capture with the plasma. Using the ion partitioning of Schippers et al. [2008. Abstract: Saturn''s largest moon, Titan, provides an interesting opportunity to study how dense atmospheres interact with the surrounding plasma environment. Without an intrinsic magnetic field, this satellite''s nitrogen-rich atmosphere is relatively unprotected from plasma interactions. Therefore, the energy-deposition rate is important for understanding chemistry and dynamics in Titan''s atmosphere. Since the plasma environment can vary significantly we focus here on the T18 Titan encounter using in-situ data from instruments on board the Cassini spacecraft. These instruments cannot provide in-situ information below the spacecraft closest approach altitude (∼>960km) so we use the Cassini magnetospheric imaging instrument (MIMI) ion-neutral camera (INCA) to remotely image energetic hydrogen particle fluxes (20–80keV) at altitudes below Titan closest approach. We also use the MIMI low-energy magnetosphere measurements system (LEMMS) to measure the incident ion fluxes as the spacecraft approaches Titan and combine these data sets with an atmospheric model to first reproduce INCA images. We then use this model to calculate the energy-deposition profiles for the observed incident proton flux. Our model is able to reproduce the INCA observations and give the energy density deposited vs. altitude in Titan''s atmosphere; however, we find that the incident fluxes and energy-deposition profiles vary significantly during the encounter. Abstract: Titan''s nitrogen-rich atmosphere is directly bombarded by energetic ions, due to its lack of a significant intrinsic magnetic field. Singly charged energetic ions from Saturn magnetosphere undergo charge exchange collisions with neutral atoms in Titan''s exosphere, being transformed into energetic neutral atoms (ENAs). The ion and neutral camera (INCA), one of the three sensors that comprise the magnetosphere imaging instrument on the Cassini/Huygens mission to Saturn and Titan, images the ENA emissions from various ion/gas interaction regions in the Saturnian magnetosphere. During Cassinis second orbit around Saturn the spacecraft performed the Ta Titan flyby (26 October 2004), at an altitude of only 1174km. INCA data acquired during this targeted close flyby not only confirm model predictions of dominant finite ion gyroradii effects, but also reveal a much more complex interaction. The Cassini–Huygens spacecraft flew by Jupiter on December 30, 2000. The instruments aboard the spacecraft started making scientific observations three months earlier. Joint, collaborative observations were carried out with the teams of other spacecraft, notably Galileo, and with Earth-based observers. An operational overview of the flyby is presented and attention drawn to contributions of the eleven papers of this series which follow. Prime achievements of this campaign have been to better define the present state of fundamental elements of the jovian system, confirming many previously tentative conclusions. Particularly noteworthy is that the interactions between the solar wind and the jovian magnetosphere have been explored far deeper than before, along with the link to the morphology and dynamics of the jovian aurora. The Cassini-Huygens Cosmic Dust Analyzer (CDA) is intended to provide direct observations of dust grains with masses between 10-19 and 10-9 kg in interplanetary space and in the jovian and saturnian systems, to investigate their physical, chemical and dynamical properties as functions of the distances to the Sun, to Jupiter and to Saturn and its satellites and rings, to study their interaction with the saturnian rings, satellites and magnetosphere. Chemical composition of interplanetary meteoroids will be compared with asteroidal and cometary dust, as well as with Saturn dust, ejecta from rings and satellites. Ring and satellites phenomena which might be effects of meteoroid impacts will be compared with the interplanetary dust environment. Electrical charges of particulate matter in the magnetosphere and its consequences will be studied, e.g. the effects of the ambient plasma and the magnetic field on the trajectories of dust particles as well as fragmentation of particles due to electrostatic disruption.The investigation will be performed with an instrument that measures the mass, composition, electric charge, speed, and flight direction of individual dust particles. It is a highly reliable and versatile instrument with a mass sensitivity 106 times higher than that of the Pioneer 10 and 11 dust detectors which measured dust in the saturnian system. The Cosmic Dust Analyzer has significant inheritance from former space instrumentation developed for the VEGA, Giotto, Galileo, and Ulysses missions. It will reliably measure impacts from as low as 1 impact per month up to 104 impacts per second. The instrument weighs 17 kg and consumes 12 W, the integrated time-of-flight mass spectrometer has a mass resolution of up to 50. Based on one-hour average data observed by the MIMI/LEMMS instrument onboard the Cassini spacecraft from 2004 to 2017, we present an empirical model of energetic electrons (27 ​keV–1937 ​keV) in Saturn's magnetosphere. This model distinguishes between two different regions. In the inner magnetosphere (<20 R S , R S ​= ​60268 ​km is the radius of Saturn), this model is constructed based on L -shell and includes dayside-nightside asymmetry, which is caused by the interaction between solar wind and Saturn's magnetosphere. This model is also adjusted for magnetodisk warping according to the seasonal variation of solar latitude. In the outer magnetosphere (>20 R S), this model is constructed based on magnetodisk coordinates and represents the sheet-like structure at magnetotail. Gaussian distribution is used to fit the data along with the perpendicular distance to the warped magnetodisk. We also include a magnetopause model to filter the flux data. Finally, the results from this model are compared with those from SATRAD (SATurn RADiation model). Our new model based on Cassini data provides a picture of the energetic electron environment from 2.5 R S to 40 R S in Saturn's magnetosphere. • An empirical energetic electron model in Saturn's magnetosphere is constructed based on 13-year data of Cassini/LEMMS. • The model distinguishes between two different regions and provides 27–1937 ​keV electron flux inside 40 R S. • Dayside-nightside asymmetry, seasonal magnetodisk warping, sheet-like magnetotail structure are included in the model. Dust particles in the Saturn system can be detected by the Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) instrument on board Cassini via antenna voltage signals induced by dust impacts. These impact signals have been simulated in the laboratory by accelerating dust particles onto a Cassini model with electric field antennas. RPWS dust measurements have been shown to be consistent with the Cosmic Dust Analyzer. During the Grand Finale orbits, Cassini flew through the gap between the D ring and Saturn's atmosphere 22 times. In situ measurements by RPWS helped quantify the hazards posed to the spacecraft and instruments on board, which showed a micron‐sized dust density orders of magnitude lower than that observed during the Ring Grazing orbits. Close inspection of the waveforms indicated a possible dependence of the impact signal decay time on ambient plasma density. Plain Language Summary: Cassini flew through the gap between Saturn and its rings for 22 times before plunging into the atmosphere of Saturn, ending its 20‐year mission. The radio and plasma waves instrument on board Cassini helped quantify the dust hazard in this previously unexplored region.
