Electric-field-controlled magnetism can boost energy efficiency in widespread applications. However, technologically, this effect is facing important challenges: mechanical failure in strain-mediated piezoelectric/magnetostrictive devices, dearth of room-temperature multiferroics, or stringent thickness limitations in electrically charged metallic films. Voltage-driven ionic motion (magneto-ionics) circumvents most of these drawbacks while exhibiting interesting magnetoelectric phenomena. Nevertheless, magneto-ionics typically requires heat treatments and multicomponent heterostructures. Here we report on the electrolyte-gated and defect-mediated O and Co transport in a Co3O4 single layer which allows for room-temperature voltage-controlled ON-OFF ferromagnetism (magnetic switch) via internal reduction/oxidation processes. Negative voltages partially reduce Co3O4 to Co (ferromagnetism: ON), resulting in graded films including Co- and O-rich areas. Positive bias oxidizes Co back to Co3O4 (paramagnetism: OFF). This electric-field-induced atomic-scale reconfiguration process is compositionally, structurally, and magnetically reversible and self-sustained, since no oxygen source other than the Co3O4 itself is required. Magnetic anisotropy is a property of great importance both for applications (magnetic storage, ...) and for its fundamental interest. In this manuscript, we are more precisely interested in the computation of the magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (MCA) that results from spin-orbit coupling. It is a delicate quantity to determine for several reasons : it is generally very small (of the order of meV per atom at most) and depends crucially on many physical and numerical parameters. In particular, it is strongly dependent on the symmetries of the system, the crystal lattice, but also on the nature of the materials, in this case the transition metals 3d. We are more particularly interested in magnetic thin films for which the MCA is calculated as the difference in system energy between a magnetization parallel to the surface of the material and a magnetization orthogonal to it. In particular, we use codes based on density functional theory (DFT, Quantum ESPRESSO and Quantum ATK) and a tight-binding code (TB). The MCA being obtained as an energy difference between two spin orientations using the force theorem. The objective of this PhD thesis is to understand and describe in detail the behavior of the MCA in magnetic thin films and the different ways to tune and modify (controllably or not) its magnitude. Thanks to our computational tools, we have extracted the main trends and highlighted the essential parameters that allow us to control the anisotropy. One of them is of particular interest, the hybridization of orbitals between a 3d transition metal and non-magnetic carbon atom, giving rise to important variations in anisotropy. Such systems are called hybrid-systems, and give us information on the transmission of magnetic properties (polarization, anisotropy) between neighboring atoms., L'anisotropie magnétique est une propriété de grande importance aussi bien pour les applications (stockage magnétiques, ...) que pour son intérêt fondamental. We address the problem of electronic and nuclear spin resonance of an individual atom on a surface driven by a scanning tunnelling microscope. Several mechanisms have been proposed so far, some of them based on the modulation of exchange and crystal field associated to a piezoelectric displacement of the adatom driven by the RF tip electric field. Here we consider a new mechanism, where the piezoelectric displacement modulates the g factor anisotropy, leading both to electronic and nuclear spin flip transitions. We discuss thoroughly the cases of Ti-H (S = 1/2) and Fe (S = 2) on MgO, relevant for recent experiments. We model the system using two approaches. First, an analytical model that includes crystal field, spin orbit coupling and hyperfine interactions. Second, we carry out density functional based calculations. We find that the modulation of the anisotropy of the g tensor due to the piezoelectric displacement of the atom is an additional mechanism for STM based single spin resonance, that would be effective in S = 1/2 adatoms with large spin orbit coupling. In the case of Ti-H on MgO, we predict a modulation spin resonance frequency driven by the DC electric field of the tip., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Spintronic nano-oscillators have remarkable properties in terms of radio frequency detection. Their nanoscale sizes, room temperature operation, and CMOS compatibility make them serious candidates for providing instantaneous spectral analysis in embedded systems. This thesis concerns the detection properties of magnetic vortex-based STNOs. One of the effects conferring on STNOs the possibility of detecting a rf signal is the spin diode effect. An rf source is used to create the signal to be detected. When the rf current frequency injected into the STNO corresponds to its resonant frequency, a rectification voltage is created at its terminals. The measurement of this voltage by a simple voltmeter makes possible to determine the rf current presence. The evolution study of the resonance frequency as a function of the STNO radius, the dc current and the magnetic field has highlighted the possibility of choosing the resonant frequency and tuning it with these parameters. From an application point of view, this property is essential for allocating an STNO to a specific frequency to be detected. Furthermore, the STNO nanometric allows us to envisage a network of thousands, even millions of STNOs contained on a chip operating at ambient temperature. However, several problems arise. The STNO sensitivity to an external rf signal must allow to determine the occupancy state of a frequency channel by a simple measurement of the voltage or with a voltage comparator. This requires a voltage variation of ten mV order. The spin diode effect doesn’t allow to achieve such variation. Another effect, measured for the first time at the Unité Mixte de Physique CNRS/Thales, called magnetic vortex expulsion, is studied. This phenomenon occurs when the vortex core crosses the STNO edges during its spin transfer induced dynamics. Thanks to this effect, the voltage amplitude variation can reach up to 25 mV in the STNOs characterized during this thesis. Moreover, this phenomenon can be tuned. From an application perspective, a network of STNOs must be created in order to allocate an STNO to a specific frequency range and thus cover a broad frequency band.The rf current distribution to all STNOs is therefore a problem to which we have brought a solution. The excitation of the vortex core by a rf field allows us to excite a large number of STNO thanks to an inductive line lithographed above the STNOs. The possibility of expelling the vortex core under these conditions has been demonstrated. We then studied the vortex core dynamics induced by an rf field during the expulsion. A time and frequency domain studies not only provided us detection time information of an rf signal by the STNO but also on its magnetization in the expulsion regime. Moreover, the STNO frequency tuning is possible even when the vortex core is excited by an rf field. Finally, these studies enabled us to implement step by step a proof of concept demonstrating the rf detection feasibility with spintronic nano-oscillators. The various studies of vortex core expulsion combined with a considerable technical work of design and manufacture finally allowed us to converge towards a solution that constitutes a starting point towards the development of a broadband spintronic spectrum occupancy detector, contained on a chip and operating at room temperature.; Les nano-oscillateurs spintroniques présentent des propriétés remarquables en termes de détection radiofréquence. No presente estudo, propomos a investigação teórica, baseada na Teoria do Funcional de Densidade, dos materiais ATiO3 (A = Mn, Fe, Ni) na estrutura R3c com objetivo de esclarecer o efeito da substituição do cátion A sobre as propriedades estruturais, magnéticas e eletrônicas, bem como descrever diferentes mecanismos de controle das propriedades multiferróicas baseados em arquiteturas de filmes-finos, morfologia e controle de defeitos intrínsecos. Para uma maior compreensão dos efeitos envolvidos nos materiais ATiO3, diferentes funcionais de troca e correlação foram investigados e o funcional PBE0 apresentou os menores desvios, consequentemente, a melhor representação comparado aos resultados experimentais. Com objetivo de investigar as propriedades conectadas a filmes-finos dos materiais ATiO3, propomos uma metodologia inovadora que permite descrever as deformações uni- e biaxial que se originam na região de interface entre o filme e o substrato. Nesse caso, os resultados obtidos indicam que as distorções estruturais induzem uma transição magnética para o NiTiO3, originando ordenamento ferromagnético a partir de um critério magneto-estrutural associado a deformação dos clusters [MO6] que reproduz satisfatoriamente os resultados experimentais reportados na literatura. De modo análogo, para elucidar a relação entre o magnetismo e a morfologia dos materiais ATiO3, combinamos cálculos de Energia de Superfície, Construção de Wulff e um formalismo avançado para descrever o magnetismo superficial considerando a existência de spins não compensados ao longo dos planos polares (100), (001), (101), (012), (111) e apolares (110). Os resultados indicam que a redução do número de coordenação dos metais A e Ti para os planos (001) e (111) resulta na transferência de carga entre os cátions A2+ e Ti4+, originando espécies Ti3+ magnéticas que aumentam o magnetismo superficial ao longo desses planos. Além disso, esse efeito é capaz de induzir uma alteração do caráter eletrônico para esses materiais, permitindo indicar que a clivagem das superfícies contribui para o controle das propriedades eletrônicas, reduzindo o valor de band-gap ou gerando comportamento meio-metálico. Os mapas morfológicos obtidos indicam que o controle da exposição majoritária do plano (001) para obtenção de discos hexagonais induz um aumento do magnetismo superficial para os materiais ATiO3 em acordo com resultados experimentais, além de predizer diferentes morfologias acessíveis com interessantes propriedades magnéticas. Ademais, o efeito de defeitos intrínsecos como vacâncias de oxigênio no bulk e superfície apolar (110) dos materiais ATiO3 foi investigado indicando que a redução do número de coordenação na região do defeito induz que os elétrons remanescentes sejam localizados, principalmente, nos orbitais 3d vazios dos cátions Ti vizinhos, gerando espécies [TiO5]ꞌ e [TiO4]ꞌ (3d1 ) que possibilitam uma interação ferromagnética nos materiais MnTiO3 e FeTiO3. A combinação entre os diferentes mecanismos investigados permitiu estabelecer um guia científico para o estudo teórico de materiais multiferróicos, contribuindo para descrever as potencialidades dos diferentes materiais bem como predizer novos candidatos. The development of spintronic has motivated the search for new multiferroic materials due to the multifunctionality of these materials that are associated with the coupling of different ferroic orders into a single crystalline structure. In the present study, we propose a theoretical investigation, based on Density Functional Theory, of ATiO3 (A = Mn, Fe, Ni) materials in the R3c structure in order to clarify the effect of A-site cation replacement on the structural, magnetic and electronic properties, as well as to describe a different mechanism to control the multiferroic properties based on thin-film architectures, morphology and point defects. For a more comprehensive overview of the main effects involved on the ATiO3 materials several exchange-correlation functionals were investigated, being the PBE0 the functional with smallest deviations and, consequently, the best representation in comparison to the experimental results. Aiming to describe the main fingerprints related with the creation of ATiO3 thin-films, we propose an innovative methodology that allows to describe the uniaxial and biaxial deformations originated in the interface region between the film and the substrate. In this case, the results indicate that structural distortions induce a magnetic transition for the NiTiO3, originating ferromagnetic ordering from magneto-structural criteria, which is associated to the deformation of the [MO6] clusters that reproduces satisfactorily the experimental results reported in the literature. Similarly, in order to elucidate the relationship between the magnetism and the morphology of the ATiO3 materials, we combined Surface Energy, Wulff Construction, and an advanced formalism to describe surface magnetism by considering the existence of uncompensated spins along the polar planes (100), (001), (101), (012), (111) and non-polar (110). The results indicate that the reduction of the coordination for both A and Ti metals along the (001) and (111) planes induces a charge transfer between the A 2+ and Ti4+ cations, resulting in magnetic Ti3+ species that increase the superficial magnetism along such planes. Moreover, this effect allowed a change in the electronic structure for these materials, allowing to point out that the cleavage of the surfaces contribute to the control of the electronic properties reducing the band-gap value or generating half-metallic behavior. The morphological maps indicated that the control of the major exposure for the (001) surface to obtain hexagonal discsinduces an increase of the superficial magnetism for the ATiO3 materials according to experimental results, besides predicting different accessible morphologies with interesting magnetic properties. In addition, the effect of intrinsic defects such as oxygen vacancies on the bulk and non-polar (110) surface of the ATiO3 materials were investigated, indicating that the reduction of coordination in the defect region induces the localization of the remaining electrons in the empty 3d orbitals of neighboring Ti cations, generating [TiO5]'and [TiO4]' (3d1 ) species that allow a ferromagnetic interaction for MnTiO3 and FeTiO3 materials. The combination of the different mechanisms investigated has allowed to stablish a scientific guide for the theoretical study of multiferroic materials, contributing to describe the potentialities of the different materials as well as to predict new candidates.

Among Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides, mono and few-layers thick VSe2 has gained much recent attention following claims of intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in this system, which have nonetheless proved controversial. Here, we address the magnetic and chemical properties of Fe/VSe2 heterostructure by combining element sensitive absorption spectroscopy and photoemission spectroscopy. Our x-ray magnetic circular dichroism results confirm recent findings that both native mono/few-layer and bulk VSe2 do not show any signature of an intrinsic ferromagnetic ordering. Nonetheless, we find that ferromagnetism can be induced, even at room temperature, after coupling with a Fe thin film layer, with antiparallel alignment of the moment on the V with respect to Fe. We further consider the chemical reactivity at the Fe/VSe2 interface and its relation with interfacial magnetic coupling. Postprint

My research belongs to the field of nanomagnetism and spintronic. The work I performed, since the end of my PhD, on magnetic multilayer with perpendicular anisotropy show how these two themes are closely linked and how they feed each other. Within the first one, I’ve been interested in the magnetic features induced interface between layers of different chemical nature (interface anisotropy, increased local magnetization, etc.), the influence of magnetic coupling (exchange coupling or dipolar coupling), as well as the competition between them. Besides I tried to follow the exponential flow of new spintronic effects. I mostly used model single crystal Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy multilayer systems whose properties were deeply characterized by many means, in order to properly study the spin-transfer torque effect. Overall, I have used complementary laboratory techniques (magnetization, susceptibility and magnetoresistance measurements, MOKE measurement and microscopy, MFM imaging, X-ray diffraction) or large facilities techniques (polarized neutron reflectometry, spectroscopy and microscopy based on X-ray magnetic dichroism) and micromagnetic calculations, to study the evolution of magnetic configurations of complex multilayer systems or assembled nano-objects based on extrinsic parameters such as an external magnetic field or temperature. I have learned that material science is the first step of very careful studies. I have therefore put quite a lot of effort in controlling the growth of various systems (alloys and multilayer) ferri-, ferromagnetic and non-magnetic films by molecular beam evaporation and magnetron sputtering. Moreover, during a three-year stint in Silicon Valley (California, USA), I have gained a new vision of the research and development within the Hitachi GST group (hard disk drive company that now belongs to Western digital). The studies described in the manuscript brought me to work with many colleagues, supervised some young ones and learn a lot from young and less young ones. I have developed national and international collaborations, sometimes through a stint, in renowned institutes like the Laboratory of Fundamental Electronics d'Orsay (France), the CEMES at toulouse (France), the center of neutron NIST in Washington DC (USA), the SOLEIL synchrotron in Saclay (France), the Lawrence Berkeley national Laboratory (USA), the IFW Dresden (Germany), the Istambul Bebek University (Turkey), Messina University (Italy) or Hitachi GST in San Jose (USA). Finally, my position as head of the service center “MAGNETISME” of Institut Jean Lamour (since 2011) has lead me to open myself to new fields and new collaborations within the University of Lorraine and outside (especially trough the Great Region and in Europe).

From this perspective, we propose a theoretical investigation of FeBO3 (B = Ti, Zr, Hf, Si, Ge, Sn) ilmenite materials based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) within B3LYP hybrid functional to investigate the B-site cation replacement effect on the structural, elastic, magnetic and electronic properties of ilmenite materials. Calculated structural parameters are in agreement with experimental results and shown that the unit cell volume can be controlled by ionic radius of the B-site metals. The bond distances for FeO6 and BO6 octahedral clarify the Jahn-Teller distortion and Fe-O-B-O-Fe intermetallic connection. The elastic behavior was investigated from bulk modulus and showed that such results were influenced by different material densities. Furthermore, these quantities can be used for analyzing the thermodynamic stability of solids, proving that FeSnO3 and FeHfO3 are unstable due to the negative values for bulk modulus. The B-site radius effect is also evidenced on the magnetic property, where Fe(Ti, Si, Ge)O3 are antiferromagnetic, while Fe(Zr, Hf, Sn)O3 are ferromagnetic. The Mulliken population analysis and charge density maps show the charge corridor formation in the [001] direction due to the intermetallic connection with the B-site metals and electronegativity affecting the stability of ilmenite materials. The Density of States and Band Structure profiles show that antiferromagnetics materials and FeZrO3 are convectional semiconductors, whereas FeHfO3 and FeSnO3 exhibit intrinsic half-metallic behavior, making them promising candidates for spintronic devices. O desenvolvimento da spintrônica tem motivado a busca por novos materiais magnéticos com comportamento meio-metálico devido à multifuncionalidade desses compostos e ao desenvolvimento de dispositivos baseados no spin do elétron, proporcionando um aumento do desempenho em relação aos dispositivos eletrônicos usuais. Nesse trabalho, propomos a investigação teórica, baseada na Teoria do Funcional de Densidade utilizando o funcional híbrido B3LYP, dos materiais FeBO3 (B = Ti, Zr, Hf, Si, Ge, Sn) na estrutura ilmenita com objetivo de esclarecer o efeito da substituição do cátion B sobre as propriedades estruturais, elásticas, magnéticas e eletrônicas. Os parâmetros estruturais calculados se mostraram em concordância com resultados experimentais e teóricos, revelando que o volume da célula unitária é controlado pelo raio iônico do cátion B. As distâncias de ligação calculadas para os octaedros FeO6 e BO6 indicam a existência do efeito de distorção Jahn-Teller e da conexão intermetálica Fe-O-B-O-Fe. O comportamento elástico foi investigado a partir do bulk modulus, indicando que tal entidade é dependente da densidade dos materiais e discute-se a possibilidade de utilizar esse fator para análise da estabilidade termodinâmica de sólidos, sugerindo a instabilidade dos materiais FeSnO3 e FeHfO3 devido aos valores negativos de bulk modulus. O efeito do tamanho dos cátions B é evidenciado sobre as propriedades magnéticas dos materiais, sendo que Fe(Ti, Si, Ge)O3 são antiferromagnéticos; enquanto que, Fe(Zr, Hf, Sn)O3 são ferromagnéticos. A análise populacional de Mulliken e os mapas de densidade de carga mostraram a formação de um corredor de carga nas conexões intermetálicas observadas na direção [001] e que a eletronegatividade dos cátions B afeta a estabilidade dos materiais com estrutura ilmenita. Os perfis de Densidade de Estados e Estrutura de Bandas mostram que os materiais antiferromagnéticos e o FeZrO3 são semicondutores convencionais, entretanto, FeHfO3 e FeSnO3 exibem comportamento meiometálico intrínseco, tornando-os promissores candidatos para dispositivos spintrônicos, porém, com outra estrutura.

High quality growth of ferromagnetic metals/III-V semiconductors heterostructures is an interesting challenge since it allows the integration of the robust magnetism of metals to the semiconductor technology. Nevertheless, the growth conditions of these two materials are totally different, making the growth of hybrid structures quiet complicated (i.e. magnetic tunnel junction). Indeed, at the optimal growth temperature of the III-V SC, the diffusion at the FM/SC III-V interface is very important and result in a rough and undefined interface. In order to prevent diffusion at the MF/SC III-V at the interface, the SC is grown at low temperature. The method results in a SC barrier with a poor quality. The low reactivity and high spin polarization at the MnAs/GaAs interface make this couple of materials a good candidate for FM/SC junctions growth. Recently, MnAs nano-clusters embedded in a GaAs matrix showed quite important magnetoresistance effects. After the MnAs clusters, by annealing a GaMnAs/GaAs(001) layer at high temperature (>400 ◦C), others III-V compounds can be grown on top of it, making this granular layer very attractive for magnetic tunnel junction heterostructures growth. We studied magnetic tunnel junctions MnAs/SC III-V/clusters of MnAs in a GaAs matrix (GaAs:MnAs), which the growth conditions of the bottom electrode (in situ annealing of a GaMnAs layer at T>500 ◦C) can significantly increase the structural and chemical quality of the SC barrier. This work can be divided into three parts. Firstly, the growth conditions of GaAs:MnAs/GaAs(001) and MnAs/GaAs(001) layers have been optimized. Then, original studies of magnetic force microscopy and photoemission spectroscopy (in situ and at the ESRF synchrotron) studies have been carried on MnAs/GaAs(001), GaAs:MnAs/GaAs(001) and GaMnAs/GaAs(001) thin films. This measurements lead to important informations to the elaboration of hybrid structures. Finally, the spin polarized transport through MnAs/SC III-V/GaAs:MnAs junctions has been studied., Le couplage d'un métal ferromagnétique (MF) et d'un semiconducteur (SC) permettrait d'intégrer un nouveau degré de liberté - le spin - aux propriétés logiques et optiques des semiconducteurs. Cependant, l'élaboration de jonctions tunnel magnétiques (JTM) couplant ces deux types de matériaux (barrières MF/SC/MF) présente des difficultés majeures. En effet, à la température de croissance optimale de la barrière semiconductrice (∼580 ◦C), le métal de l'électrode inférieure diffuse à travers l'interface pour s'incorporer à la barrière et ainsi réduire les effets de magnétorésistance. Pour éviter l'interdiffusion, la barrière doit être élaborée à basse température. Ce procédé implique l'incorporation d'antisites d'As dans la barrière SC qui réduit, encore une fois, les effets magnétorésistifs. Le couple MnAs/GaAs est considéré comme un bon candidat pour la réalisation de jonction hybride MF/SC /MF à cause de la faible réactivité et de la forte polarisation à l'interface. Afin de faire croître des JTM de bonne qualité chimique et cristalline, nous avons étudié des jonctions tunnel originales où l'électrode inférieure est une couche de clusters de MnAs dans une matrice de GaAs (GaAs:MnAs). Cet électrode est couvert par une barrière de SC III-V et par une électrode supérieure composée par une couche continue de MnAs. Le protocole de croissance de l'électrode inférieure (recuit in situ d'une couche de GaMnAs à T>500řC) permet simultanément de recuire la barrière semiconductrice et d'augmenter considérablement la qualité structurale et chimique de la barrière. Ce travail a été réalisé en trois parties. Dans un premier temps, les conditions d'élaboration de couches de GaAs:MnAs/GaAs(001) et de MnAs/GaAs(001) ont été optimisées. Ensuite, nous avons mené des études originales de microscopie à gradient de force magnétique et de spectroscopie de photoémission (in situ et au synchrotron). Ces mesures ont permis de faire ressortir des informations pertinentes pour l'intégration de ces couches en tant qu'électrode magnétique pour l'électronique de spin. Enfin, une étude du transport tunnel polarisé en spin a été conduite sur des jonctions tunnel MnAs/SC III-V/GaAs:MnAs.

The generation of dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) by ion-beam implantation of magnetic centres into semiconducting materials has experienced renewed interest since the generation of magnetic thin films from the Cobalt-doped wide-gap semiconductor TiO2. Since the magnitude of the magnetic moment in such films is strongly varying and since the implementation in a standard, Silicon-based semicon ductor device is challenging, we have concentrated on the binary and fully integrable system Vanadium:Silicon. At higher doping concentrations, Vanadium and Silicon form several binary compounds; the most well characterised structures have the compositions V:Si= 3:1, 5:3, 6:5, 1:2, and bear the potential to exhibit magnetism. At higher dilution, Vanadium may form point defects in the crystalline Silicon host matrix. Here, we investigate different combinations of substitutional and interstitial vanadium atoms in a silicon crystal matrix.

This work is part of a study of the transfer of spin measured on a single domain ferromagnetic. The ferromagnetic monodomain is a single nanowire of Ni or Co electrodeposited in a nanoporous matrix. The study aims to give prominence to the properties of spin relaxation of conduction electrons at the interface between the ferromagnetic domain and the normal contact, in terms of the interaction between the spins of conduction electrons and the ferromagnetic order parameter. This means, with the last study, to underline that the diffusive spin-transfer effect would be a consequence of this relaxation. In a first approach, an anisotropic spin accumulation, involving the interaction $s-d$ (or spin-orbit interaction), is studied through the thermoelectric power (TEP). The spin-dependent TEP effect is proved, which is restricted to the interface and is anisotropic. This contribution is interpreted as the effect of the spin accumulation produced by a $s-d$ relaxation. résultats confortent une approche diffusive du transfert de spin. In a second study, the spin transfer effect is studied through the thermal susceptibility of anisotropy magnetoresistance $dR/dT$. It shows that the susceptibility is due to the susceptibility of the magnetization $dM/dT$. Fluctuations in the magnetization generated by the injection of strong current are measured in terms of entropy variation. A variation of $60\%$ is measured with a current intensity of about $10^{7}A/cm^{2}$. These results support the diffusive spin transfer approach., Ce travail s'inscrit dans le cadre des études du transfert de spin mesuré sur un domaine ferromagnétique unique. Le monodomaine ferromagnétique est un nanofil unique de Ni ou de Co électrodéposé dans une matrice nanoporeuse. Cette étude cherche à mettre en évidence les propriétés de relaxation des spins des électrons de conduction à l'interface entre le domaine ferromagnétique et le contact normal, en termes d'interaction entre les spins des électrons de conduction et le paramètre d'ordre ferromagnétique. Il s'agit en dernière analyse de mettre en évidence un effet de transfert de spin de type diffusif qui serait une conséquence de cette relaxation. Dans une première approche, une accumulation de spin anisotrope, mettant en jeu l'interaction $s-d$ (ou interaction spin-orbite) est étudiée par le biais du pouvoir thermoélectrique TEP. Un effet TEP dépendant du spin est en effet mis en évidence, qui est restreint à l'interface et qui est anisotrope. Cette contribution est interprétée comme étant l'effet de l'accumulation de spin produit par une relaxation $s-d$. Dans un deuxième temps, l'effet de transfert de spin est étudié par le biais de la susceptibilité thermique de la magnétorésistance d'anisotropie $dR/dT$. On montre que la susceptibilité est due à la susceptibilité de l'aimantation $dM/dT$. Les fluctuations de l'aimantation générées par l'injection de courant fort sont mesurées en termes de variation d'entropie. Une variation de $60\%$ est mesurée pour un courant de l'ordre de $10^{7} A/cm^{2}$. Ces résultats confortent une approche diffusive du transfert de spin.

The effect of a magnetic domain wall on the electronic transport in disordered materials is studied in an exchange-coupled amorphous ${\text{Gd}}_{40}{\text{Fe}}_{60}/{\text{Gd}}_{10}{\text{Fe}}_{90}$ bilayer. In this amorphous system, the size and the shape of an interfacial domain wall is controlled by an external magnetic field. Current-in-plane transport measurements are performed on single GdFe layers, ${\text{Gd}}_{40}{\text{Fe}}_{60}/{\text{Gd}}_{10}{\text{Fe}}_{90}$ bilayer, and on a ${\text{Gd}}_{40}{\text{Fe}}_{60}/\text{Si}/{\text{Gd}}_{10}{\text{Fe}}_{90}$ trilayer where the Si layer prevents the formation of the interfacial magnetic domain wall. Different contributions to the resistance are evidenced. In all types of samples, a linear positive magnetoresistance contribution is observed at high field which can be linked to the amorphous structure of the GdFe alloys. The comparison between the bilayer and the trilayer allows to eliminate this contribution and evidences that anisotropic magnetoresistance is the main effect induced by the interfacial domain wall. Beyond the anisotropic magnetoresistance signal, a supplementary negative magnetoresistance is evidenced. The origin of this effect is discussed qualitatively using previous theoretical predictions on magnetotransport through a magnetic domain wall in disordered metals.

This thesis is dedicated to the theoretical study of spin-dependent transport in atomic contact. The main objective is to understand the giant anisotropic magnetoresistance experimentally measured in iron break junctions. On this purpose, we developed a method to calculate electron transport properties in magnetic nanostructures. The calculation is performed in two steps. First the electronic structure of the contact is determined in a basis of atomic orbitals spd using a tight-binding model extended to include magnetism. The magnetic properties are described at the atomic scale using an interelectronic interaction Hamiltonian. Two interaction models are compared : a simple Stoner-like model and a more complete Hartree-Fock model, developed to reproduce the orbital polarization effects which appear in one-dimensional nanostructure. To describe the magnetic anisotropy, noncollinear magnetism and spin-orbit coupling are taken in account. In the second step, the electron transport properties are derived in the Landauer formalism. In this approach, the transport of electron is supposed to be coherent and elastic. The conductance is directly proportional to the transmission probability of electrons through the contact. This transmission is calculated from the Green function of the system. This method is applied to the study of magnetoresistance in iron atomic contact. Several contact geometries, from the monatomic wire to realistic systems, are compared. The results reveal the importance of contact geometry and orbital polarization., Cette thèse est consacrée à l'étude théorique du transport électronique dans les contacts atomiques magnétiques. L'objectif principal est d'expliquer la magnétorésistance anisotrope géante mesurée expérimentalement dans les jonctions à cassure de fer. Dans ce but, on a développé une méthode de calcul de la conductance des nanostructures magnétiques.Le calcul est effectué en deux étapes. Dans un premier temps, la structure électronique du contact est déterminée de manière autocohérente dans une base d'orbitales atomiques spd à l'aide d'un modèle de liaisons fortes étendu au magnétisme. Les propriétés magnétiques sont décrites à l'échelle atomique par un modèle d'interaction inter-électronique. Deux modèles d'interactions sont comparés : un modèle simple de type Stoner et un modèle plus complet de type Hartree-Fock développé pour reproduire les effets de polarisation orbitale susceptibles d'apparaître au niveau du contact. En effet, dans les nanostructures unidimensionnelles, on observe une levée du blocage du moment orbital qui existe dans les cristaux cubiques en volume. Pour permettre la description de l'anisotropie magnétique du système, on prend aussi en compte le magnétisme non-colinéaire et le couplage spin-orbite.Dans un second temps, les propriétés de transport électroniques du système sont déterminées dans le formalisme de Landauer. Dans cette approche, on considère que le transport est cohérent et élastique. Cette approximation est valide quand étudie un conducteur de taille atomique à basse température sous de faibles tensions. La conductance est alors directement proportionnelle à la probabilité de transmission des électrons à travers le système. Cette transmission est calculée à partir de la fonction de Green du système. Cette méthode de calcul est appliquée à l'étude de la magnétorésistance anisotrope des contacts de fer. Plusieurs géométries de contact, allant du fil monoatomique parfait aux systèmes réalistes, sont comparées. Les résultats révèlent le rôle prépondérant joué par la géométrie et par la polarisation orbitale. Pour que l'anisotropie magnétique soit aussi élevée que dans les expériences, il est nécessaire que l'atome de contact soit dans une configuration de fil monoatomique. Les effets de polarisation orbitale permettent d'expliquer les deux plateaux de conductance mesurés expérimentalement. Ils sont liés à l'existence de deux états magnétiques métastables qui différent par la direction du moment orbital sur l'atome de contact.

The magnetic random access memories (MRAM) are on the way to supplant the other forms of random access memories using the states of electric charge, and this thanks to their many technical advantages: not-volatility, speed, low consumption power, robustness. Also, the MRAM are alleged insensitive with the ionizing radiations, which was not checked in experiments until now. The current architecture of the MRAM is based on the use of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ). These MRAM can present an important disadvantage, because they are likely of present errors of addressing, in particular when integration (density of memory cells) is increasingly thorough. The work undertaken during this thesis relates to these two points: - to check the functional reliability of the MRAM containing JTM exposed to high energy ionizing radiations ; - to study a ferrimagnetic amorphous alloy, GdCo, likely to enter the composition of JTM and allowing to free from the possible errors of addressing by a process of thermal inhibition of the memory cells. This work of thesis showed that the MRAM containing JTM preserve their functional properties fully when they are subjected to intense ionizing radiations, and that GdCo is a very interesting material from the point of view of the solid state physics and magnetism, that its physical properties are very promising as for its applications, and that its integration in a JTM still claims technological developments., Les mémoires magnétiques à accès aléatoire (MRAM) sont en passe de supplanter les autres formes de mémoires à accès aléatoire utilisant des états de charge électrique, et ce grâce à leurs nombreux avantages techniques : non-volatilité, rapidité, faible consommation énergétique, robustesse. Egalement, les MRAM sont prétendues insensibles aux rayonnements ionisants, ce qui n'a pas été vérifié expérimentalement jusqu'à présent. L'architecture actuelle des MRAM est basée sur l'utilisation de jonctions tunnel magnétiques (JTM). Ces MRAM peuvent présenter un inconvénient de taille, car elles sont susceptibles d'exhiber des erreurs d'adressage, en particulier lorsque l'intégration (la densité de points mémoire) est de plus en plus poussée. Le travail mené pendant cette thèse concerne ces deux points : - vérifier la fiabilité fonctionnelle des MRAM à base de JTM exposées aux rayonnements ionisants de haute énergie ; - étudier un alliage amorphe ferrimagnétique, le GdCo, susceptible d'entrer dans la composition de JTM et permettant de s'affranchir des éventuelles erreurs d'adressage par un processus d'inhibition thermique des points mémoire. Ces travaux de thèse ont démontré que les MRAM à base de JTM conservent pleinement leurs propriétés fonctionnelles lorsqu'elles sont soumises à un rayonnement ionisant intense, et que le GdCo est un matériau très intéressant du point de vue de la physique du solide et du magnétisme, que ses propriétés physiques sont très prometteuses quant à ses applications, et que son intégration dans une JTM réclame encore des évolutions technologiques.

The purpose of this study is to further understanding of the structural, electronic, magnetic properties of CdO doped with transition metal (Mn) and non metal element (N). The calculations are performed by the developed full-potential augmented plane wave plus local orbitals method within the spin density functional theory. As exchange–correlation potential we used the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) form. Moreover, the electronic structure study for our compounds was performed with and without oxygen deficiency. We treated the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states and we found that all compounds are stable in the ferromagnetic structure, and all doped materials CdO:Mn and CdO:N adopt the half metallic character. In addition, we notice that the oxygen vacancy destroyed the ferromagnetism in N doped CdO, while Mn doped CdO becomes semiconductor.

In a first part, we studied the magnetic properties of organic radicals (coupled with rare earth or between each other). We calculated the magnetic exchange and the g-tensor of these compounds to understand their magnetic susceptibility and thei magnetization curves via ab initio calculations based on the wave-function. We studied how the chemistry and the crystal stacking affect meaningful parameters linked to magnetism and conduction. Those parameters were extracted with the thory of effective Hamiltonians fo various families of organic radicals. From the observed trends for the different parameters, we predicted some ways to obtain multifunctional compounds. In a second part, we used the same parameters (hoping integral, coulombic repulsion, magnetic exchange) to describe transport properties through highly correlated molecular junctions. From the ab initio parameters, we developed a phenomenological model based on master equations to describe the electronic transport. We stressed the importance of a multiconfigurational description to reproduce properly the transport properties for spin unpolarized and spin polarized situations. In both cases, the mono- or multi-configurational description affects qualitatively and quantitatively the predicted conductance curve.; Dans une première partie, nous avons étudié quelques propriétés de molécules magnétiques impliquant des radicaux organiques (seuls ou conjointement avec des terres rares). Nous avons ainsi pu interpréter l'évolution de la susceptibilité magnétique et de l'aimantation en fonction de la température en évaluant par des approches ab initio fonctions d'onde les constantes d'échange ou le tenseur g au sein de ces matériaux. De plus, nous avons chercher à définir les conditions pour que des matériaux à base de radicaux organiques présentent simultanément des propriétés magnétiques et conductrices. Nous avons ainsi examiné différentes familles de composés et l'influence de la structure géométrique et chimique des radicaux organiques utilisés. Pour cette partie, nous avons extrait les intégrales physiques pertinentes par la méthode des Hamiltoniens effectifs.Dans une deuxième partie, nous avons utilisés ces quantités physiques (intégrale de saut, répulsion sur site, échange) pour décrire le phénomène de transport dans des jonctions pour lesquelles les effets de la corrélation électronique ne peuvent être écartés. Munis de ces paramètres ab initio, nous avons développé un modèle phénoménologique permettant de décrire la conduction moléculaire à l'aide d'un jeu d'équations maîtresses. Nous avons ainsi cherché à mettre en évidence l'intérêt des approches post Hartree-Fock empruntant une fonction d'onde corrélée et de spin adapté dans la description du transport électronique. Que ce soit dans le cas de transport polarisé en spin ou non, l'approche utilisée (mono ou multi-déterminentale) conditionne qualitativement et quantitativement la caractéristique courant/tension.
