Rationale and Objectives: To determine if super-resolution deep learning reconstruction (SR-DLR) improves the depiction of cranial nerves and interobserver agreement when assessing neurovascular conflict in 3D fast asymmetric spin echo (3D FASE) brain MR images, as compared to deep learning reconstruction (DLR)., Materials and Methods: This retrospective study involved reconstructing 3D FASE MR images of the brain for 37 patients using SR-DLR and DLR. Three blinded readers conducted qualitative image analyses, evaluating the degree of neurovascular conflict, structure depiction, sharpness, noise, and diagnostic acceptability. Quantitative analyses included measuring edge rise distance (ERD), edge rise slope (ERS), and full width at half maximum (FWHM) using the signal intensity profile along a linear region of interest across the center of the basilar artery., Results: Interobserver agreement on the degree of neurovascular conflict of the facial nerve was generally higher with SR-DLR (0.429-0.923) compared to DLR (0.175-0.689). SR-DLR exhibited increased subjective image noise compared to DLR (p ≥ 0.008). However, all three readers found SR-DLR significantly superior in terms of sharpness (p < 0.001); cranial nerve depiction, particularly of facial and acoustic nerves, as well as the osseous spiral lamina (p < 0.001); and diagnostic acceptability (p ≤ 0.002). The FWHM (mm)/ERD (mm)/ERS (mm -1 ) for SR-DLR and DLR was 3.1-4.3/0.9-1.1/8795.5-10,703.5 and 3.3-4.8/1.4-2.1/5157.9-7705.8, respectively, with SR-DLR's image sharpness being significantly superior (p ≤ 0.001)., Conclusion: SR-DLR enhances image sharpness, leading to improved cranial nerve depiction and a tendency for greater interobserver agreement regarding facial nerve neurovascular conflict., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 The Association of University Radiologists. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of iterative motion correction (IMC) on reducing artifacts in brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with deep learning reconstruction (DLR). The study included 10 volunteers (between September 2023 and December 2023) and 30 patients (between June 2022 and July 2022) for quantitative and qualitative analyses, respectively. Volunteers were instructed to remain still during the first MRI with fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequence (FLAIR) and to move during the second scan. IMCoff DLR images were reconstructed from the raw data of the former acquisition; IMCon and IMCoff DLR images were reconstructed from the latter acquisition. After registration of the motion images, the structural similarity index measure (SSIM) was calculated using motionless images as reference. For qualitative analyses, IMCon and IMCoff FLAIR DLR images of the patients were reconstructed and evaluated by three blinded readers in terms of motion artifacts, noise, and overall quality. SSIM for IMCon images was 0.952, higher than that for IMCoff images (0.949) (p < 0.001). In qualitative analyses, although noise in IMCon images was rated as increased by two of the three readers (both p < 0.001), all readers agreed that motion artifacts and overall quality were significantly better in IMCon images than in IMCoff images (all p < 0.001). In conclusion, IMC reduced motion artifacts in brain FLAIR DLR images while maintaining similarity to motionless images., Competing Interests: Declarations. The aim of this study was to investigate whether super-resolution deep learning reconstruction (SR-DLR) is superior to conventional deep learning reconstruction (DLR) with respect to interobserver agreement in the evaluation of neuroforaminal stenosis using 1.5T cervical spine MRI. This retrospective study included 39 patients who underwent 1.5T cervical spine MRI. T2-weighted sagittal images were reconstructed with SR-DLR and DLR. Three blinded radiologists independently evaluated the images in terms of the degree of neuroforaminal stenosis, depictions of the vertebrae, spinal cord and neural foramina, sharpness, noise, artefacts and diagnostic acceptability. In quantitative image analyses, a fourth radiologist evaluated the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by placing a circular or ovoid region of interest on the spinal cord, and the edge slope based on a linear region of interest placed across the surface of the spinal cord. Interobserver agreement in the evaluations of neuroforaminal stenosis using SR-DLR and DLR was 0.422-0.571 and 0.410-0.542, respectively. The kappa values between reader 1 vs. reader 2 and reader 2 vs. reader 3 significantly differed. Two of the three readers rated depictions of the spinal cord, sharpness, and diagnostic acceptability as significantly better with SR-DLR than with DLR. Both SNR and edge slope (/mm) were also significantly better with SR-DLR (12.9 and 6031, respectively) than with DLR (11.5 and 3741, respectively) (p < 0.001 for both). Aim: To evaluate whether deep learning reconstruction (DLR) can accelerate the acquisition of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences of the knee for clinical use., Materials and Methods: Using a 1.5-T MRI scanner, sagittal fat-suppressed T2-weighted imaging (fs-T2WI), coronal proton density-weighted imaging (PDWI), and coronal T1-weighted imaging (T1WI) were performed. DLR was applied to images with a number of signal averages (NSA) of 1 to obtain 1DLR images. Then 1NSA, 1DLR, and 4NSA images were compared subjectively, and by noise (standard deviation of intra-articular water or medial meniscus) and contrast-to-noise ratio between two anatomical structures or between an anatomical structure and intra-articular water., Results: Twenty-seven healthy volunteers (age: 40.6 ± 11.9 years) were enrolled. Three 1DLR image sequences were obtained within 200 s (approximately 12 minutes for 4NSA image). According to objective evaluations, PDWI 1DLR images showed the smallest noise and significantly higher contrast than 1NSA and 4NSA images. For fs-T2WI, smaller noise and higher contrast were observed in the order of 4NSA, 1DLR, and 1NSA images. According to the subjective analysis, structure visibility, image noise, and overall image quality were significantly better for PDWI 1DLR than 1NSA images; moreover, the visibility of the meniscus and bone, image noise, and overall image quality were significantly better for 1DLR than 4NSA images. Fs-T2WI and T1WI 1DLR images showed no difference between 1DLR and 4NSA images., Conclusion: Compared to PDWI 4NSA images, PDWI 1DLR images were of higher quality, while the quality of fs-T2WI and T1WI 1DLR images was similar to that of 4NSA images., (Copyright © 2024 The Royal College of Radiologists. Objectives: To directly investigate the rapid respiratory effect of gadoxetate disodium in an experimental study using mice., Methods: After confirming the steady respiratory state under general anaesthesia, eight mice were injected with all test agents in the following order: phosphate-buffered saline (A, control group), 1.25 mmol/kg of gadoteridol (B) or gadopentetate dimeglumine (C), or 0.31 mmol/kg of gadoxetate disodium (D, E). The experimenter was not blinded to the agents. The injection dose was fixed as 100 μL for Groups A-D and 50 μL for Group E. We continuously monitored and recorded respiratory rate (RR), peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ), and heart rate. The time-series changes from 0 to 30 s were compared by the linear mixed method RESULTS: Groups D and E showed the largest RR increase (20.6 and 20.3 breaths/min, respectively) and were significantly larger compared to Group A (3.36 breaths/min, both P<0.001). RR change of Groups D and E did not differ. RR change of Groups B and C was smaller (0.72 and 12.4 breaths/min, respectively) and did not differ statistically with Group A. Significant bradycardia was observed only in Group C (P<0.001). SpO 2 was constant in all groups., Conclusions: Gadoxetate disodium causes a rapid tachypnoea without significant change of SpO 2 and heart rate regardless of the dilution method., Key Points: • Injection of gadoxetate disodium causes tachypnoea. • Dilution method did not alter the rapid respiratory effect of gadoxetate disodium. • The respiratory effect of gadoxetate disodium was larger than other contrast agents.

Purpose: To investigate the feasibility of polymeric micelle of poly(ethyleneglycol) (PEG)-b-poly(L-lysine-DOTA) (Gd-micelle) as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance lymphography (MRL)., Materials and Methods: Twenty-four female BALB/c mice were randomly divided into four groups of six mice each. Among them, mice of two groups were injected of complete Freund's adjuvant to obtain inflamed lymph nodes. We subcutaneously injected 0.5 μmol Gd per mouse of Gd-micelle or gadofluorine P in the right rear footpad. Identical 3D T 1 -weighted gradient-echo imaging (1T MRI system) were subsequently obtained to create time-intensity curves of the right popliteal, sacral, and lumbar-aortic lymph nodes and to measure the contrast ratios (CRs). The peak CR, area under the curve (AUC), and elimination half-life (T 1/2 ) of CR of the popliteal lymph node were assessed by two-way factorial analysis of variance. We also performed a qualitative assessment of normal and inflamed lymph node at three timepoints., Results: The mean peak CR of Gd-micelle was 2.64 and 1.89 for gadofluorine P in normal mice, and 3.48 and 2.73 in the inflamed lymph node. Statistically, peak CR was higher for Gd-micelle (P = 0.004). In addition, the AUC was larger (P < 0.001) and T 1/2 was longer (P < 0.001) for Gd-micelle. In qualitative assessment, Gd-micelle demonstrated the same or higher scores in every lymph node, and demonstrated a higher score in lumbar-aortic lymph node of a 360-minute image (P = 0.006) and in inflamed lymph node of a 360-minute image (P = 0.009)., Conclusion: Compared to gadofluorine P, Gd-micelle showed higher and more prolonged enhancement in MRL imaging in normal and inflamed lymph nodes., Level of Evidence: 1 Technical Efficacy: Stage 1 J. Primary intraocular lymphoma (IOL) has a propensity for central nervous system (CNS) relapse within 2 years of initial diagnosis, affecting clinical outcome. To reduce CNS relapse, we performed the combination treatment protocols of intravitreal methotrexate injections, methotrexate-based systemic induction chemotherapy and consolidation high-dose cytarabine and reduced-dose whole brain radiation therapy (rdWBRT, 23·4 Gy) for B-cell primary IOL with or without newly diagnosed CNS involvement. All patients underwent longitudinal brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cognitive assessment for evaluation of treatment-induced leucoencephalopathy. Seventeen patients initiated and 16 completed the protocol treatment. CNS relapse occurred in 2 patients and intraocular relapse in 3. Four-year progression-free survival (PFS) was 74·9% and 4-year overall survival (OS) was 86·3%, with a median follow-up period of 48·9 months. Of 11 patients without CNS involvement, 1 had CNS relapse and 3 intraocular relapse, and 4-year PFS and OS was 72·7% and 88·9%, respectively. Although white matter abnormalities shown by MRI were significantly increased at 4 years after rdWBRT, only one patient developed mild cognitive impairment. The combination of intravitreal chemotherapy, prophylactic systemic chemotherapy and rdWBRT for primary IOL showed a potential to reduce CNS relapse rate and improved 4-year PFS and OS without increase of cognitive dysfunction., (© 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the influence of indocyanine green (ICG) on hepatic uptake of gadolinium ethoxybenzyldiethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)., Materials and Methods: Groups of 6 female C57BL6 mice were injected with 5 mg/kg ICG, 20 mg/kg ICG, or phosphate-buffered saline (control group) 10 minutes before the injection of Gd-EOB-DTPA; identical 3-dimensional gradient echo T1-weighted images were subsequently obtained to create time-intensity curves and to measure the peak contrast ratios (CRs) of liver parenchyma. We studied both hypothermic and normothermic mice. Peak CRs for all experimental conditions were evaluated, and among-group differences were assessed using 2-way factorial analysis of variance with Bonferroni post hoc testing., Results: In hypothermic mice, the time-intensity curves of the 3 groups gradually increased from 5 to 30 minutes and almost plateaued after 30 minutes. The peak CR decreased as the amount of injected ICG increased (control group, 5 mg/kg ICG, 20 mg/kg ICG: 1.66 ± 0.09, 1.37 ± 0.18, 1.25 ± 0.24, respectively). In normothermic animals, the time-intensity curves of the control and ICG 5 mg/kg groups peaked 10 to 15 minutes after injection, the peak CRs were very similar (control group, 5 mg/kg ICG: 2.01 ± 0.16, 1.95 ± 0.14, respectively), and the intensities thereof then gradually fell until 60 minutes. Compared with these groups, the ICG 20 mg/kg group exhibited lower peak CR (1.48 ± 0.14) and a weaker decrease in intensity to 60 minutes. Both the amount of ICG injected (P < 0.001) and the experimental temperature (P < 0.001) significantly affected the measurements., Conclusions: Indocyanine green inhibits the hepatic uptake of Gd-EOB-DTPA and affects the signal intensity upon Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging. Such inhibition was more obvious in hypothermic mice.

Purpose: To clarify the development of HCC, temporal change of steatosis and Gd-EOB-DTPA enhancement of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) model mice by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)., Materials and Methods: All animal experiments were approved by the institution's Animal Research Committee. MRI was performed on six NASH and six simple steatosis (SS) model mice every 2weeks from the ages of 8weeks to 16weeks. The sequential changes in the number and size of the focal liver lesions detected on Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI were evaluated. Additionally, the hepatic fat fraction (HFF), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and relative enhancement (RE) were calculated at each time point. The temporal changes and correlations in these parameters were evaluated., Results: All alive NASH model mice demonstrated focal liver lesions from week 10, at the latest. Number of the lesions increased with time, and all the lesion enlarged with time. All the lesions larger than 1mm were confirmed as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) pathologically. While the HFF remained constant in NASH model mice, HFF in SS model mice dramatically increased with time. CNR of the NASH model mice remained constant through the study period, while CNR in SS model mice decreased with time. Although no correlation was seen in NASH model mice, the HFF showed a negative correlation against CNR and RE in SS model mice., Conclusion: Development of HCC was observed using Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI only in NASH model mice. Degree of steatosis and hepatic enhancement by Gd-EOB-DTPA was both constant in NASH model mice, while steatosis increased and hepatic enhancement decreased with time in SS model mice., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Rationale and Objectives: Three-dimensional (3D) printing is attracting increasing attention in the medical field. This study aimed to apply 3D printing to the production of hollow splenic artery aneurysm models for use in the simulation of endovascular treatment, and to evaluate the precision and accuracy of the simulation model., Materials and Methods: From 3D computed tomography (CT) angiography data of a splenic artery aneurysm, 10 hollow models reproducing the vascular lumen were created using a fused deposition modeling-type desktop 3D printer. After filling with water, each model was scanned using T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging for the evaluation of the lumen. All images were coregistered, binarized, and then combined to create an overlap map. The cross-sectional area of the splenic artery aneurysm and its standard deviation (SD) were calculated perpendicular to the x- and y-axes., Results: Most voxels overlapped among the models. The cross-sectional areas were similar among the models, with SDs <0.05 cm 2 . The mean cross-sectional areas of the splenic artery aneurysm were slightly smaller than those calculated from the original mask images. The maximum mean cross-sectional areas calculated perpendicular to the x- and y-axes were 3.90 cm 2 (SD, 0.02) and 4.33 cm 2 (SD, 0.02), whereas those calculated from the original mask images were 4.14 cm 2 and 4.66 cm 2 , respectively. The mean cross-sectional areas of the afferent artery were, however, almost the same as those calculated from the original mask images., Conclusion: The results suggest that 3D simulation modeling of a visceral artery aneurysm using a fused deposition modeling-type desktop 3D printer and computed tomography angiography data is highly precise and accurate., (Copyright © 2017 The Association of University Radiologists. Background: Plexiform angiomyxoid myofibroblastic tumor (PAMT) is a very rare mesenchymal tumor of the stomach. Here we report a case of pathologically confirmed PAMT with an unique cyst formation., Case Presentation: A 55-year-old male with a 10-year history of a gastric subepithelial tumor underwent computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Two cysts were observed in the tumor, and the cyst wall showed moderately high intensity on T2-weighted images compared with the gastric wall. On dynamic study, the cyst wall showed a gradual enhancement pattern, and prominent enhancement was observed in the delayed phase. Laparoscopic partial gastric resection was performed, and a pathological diagnosis of PAMT was rendered., Conclusion: We present a rare case of gastric PAMT, which was uniquely presented as cysts. One of the cysts in the tumor had an epithelial wall lining, which had never been reported before in gastric mesenchymal tumor, in addition to partial glandular structure. We reviewed our case, focusing on radiologic-pathologic correlation, and suggested hypothesis of cyst formation. According to our findings, PAMT with cyst formation would be included of differential diagnosis of gastric subepithelial tumors.

Meningiomas are common neoplasms that frequently occur in the brain and spine. Among the 15 histological subtypes of meningiomas in the WHO classification, the incidence of meningothelial meningiomas is the highest, followed by fibrous and transitional meningiomas. These three subtypes account for approximately 80 % of all meningiomas, and thus could be regarded as typical meningiomas. For this reason, other uncommon histological subtypes may be considered as imaging variants, and diagnosis is often challenging for radiologists solely based on imaging features of typical meningiomas. In addition to the histological subtypes, meningiomas arising in atypical locations could be easily mistaken for other lesions more commonly observed in those locations. The purpose of this article is to review characteristic clinical and imaging findings of uncommon meningiomas, including histological variants and meningiomas occurring in relatively rare locations.

The identification of individual differences in brain morphology is important to understand the background of individual differences in brain functions. In the present study, we investigated whether brain morphology is discernibly different among individuals and is personally identifiable information. Using structural magnetic resonance imaging data from 215 healthy subjects scanned twice (scan interval = 1.0 ± 0.1 years), we performed brain recognition by image normalization using a voxel-based morphometry approach, feature extraction based on principal component analysis, and calculating the Euclidean distances between image pairs projected into the subspace. Even with only 32 dimensions used for projection, the rank-one identification rate was 99.5%. With ≥112 dimensions used, the rank-one identification rate was 100%. At a false accept rate of 0.01%, the genuine accept rates were 95.8% and 100% with 32 and ≥128 dimensions used for projection, respectively. There was little difference in the Euclidean distances among different combinations of scanners used or between probe-gallery image pairs with and without scanner upgrade. These results indicate that brain morphology can identify a specific individual; i.e., brain morphology is personally identifiable information. Individually different brain morphology may occur as a collection of differences in brain structures that reflect individual differences in a variety of performances and various psychological characteristics and behavior patterns, and may provide the background of individual differences in personality and brain function., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. It is not known whether administration of contrast agent via retro-orbital injection or the tail vein route affects the efficiency of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Therefore, we compared the effects of retro-orbital and tail vein injection on the kinetics of the contrast agent used for MRI in mice. The same group of nine healthy female mice received contrast agent via either route. An extracellular contrast agent was infused via the tail vein and retro-orbital vein, in random order. Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI was performed before and after administering the contrast agent. The contrast effects in the liver, kidney, lung, and myocardium were assessed. The average total times of venous puncture and mounting of the injection system were about 10 and 4 min for the tail vein and retro-orbital route, respectively. For all organs assessed, the maximum contrast ratio occurred 30 s after administration and the time course of the contrast ratio was similar with either routes. For each organ, the contrast ratios correlated strongly; the contrast ratios were similar. The retro-orbital and tail vein routes afforded similar results in terms of the kinetics of the contrast agent. The retro-orbital route can be used as a simple efficient alternative to tail vein injection for dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI of mice.

Objectives: To investigate whether reproducibility of gray matter volumetry is influenced by parameter settings for VBM 8 using Diffeomorphic Anatomical Registration Through Exponentiated Lie Algebra (DARTEL) with region-of-interest (ROI) analyses., Methods: We prepared three-dimensional T1-weighted magnetic resonance images (3D-T1WIs) of 21 healthy subjects. All subjects were imaged with each of five MRI systems. Voxel-based morphometry 8 (VBM 8) and WFU PickAtlas software were used for gray matter volumetry. The bilateral ROI labels used were those provided as default settings with the software: Frontal Lobe, Hippocampus, Occipital Lobe, Orbital Gyrus, Parietal Lobe, Putamen, and Temporal Lobe. All 3D-T1WIs were segmented to gray matter with six parameters of VBM 8, with each parameter having between three and eight selectable levels. Reproducibility was evaluated as the standard deviation (mm³) of measured values for the five MRI systems., Results: Reproducibility was influenced by 'Bias regularization (BiasR)', 'Bias FWHM', and 'De-noising filter' settings, but not by 'MRF weighting', 'Sampling distance', or 'Warping regularization' settings. Reproducibility in BiasR was influenced by ROI. Superior reproducibility was observed in Frontal Lobe with the BiasR1 setting, and in Hippocampus, Parietal Lobe, and Putamen with the BiasR3*, BiasR1, and BiasR5 settings, respectively., Conclusion: Reproducibility of gray matter volumetry was influenced by parameter settings in VBM 8 using DARTEL and ROI. In multi-center studies, the use of appropriate settings in VBM 8 with DARTEL results in reduced scanner effect.

Our aim was to show whether sensitivity for detecting volume changes in regional gray matter in default mode network (DMN) at converted [from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease (from MCI to AD)] phase was improved by use of a standardized volume with global gray-matter volume. T1-weighted MR images (T1WI) of seven normal subjects and seven converted (from MCI to AD) patients were obtained from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database. Gray-matter images segmented with Statistical Parametric Mapping 5 were measured by the atlas-based method. We focused on five nodes of the DMN. For each phase, region of interest (ROI) volumes in the five nodes were standardized by two methods: (1) the ratio to the screening phase (S&#95;volume) and (2) the ratio to the screening phase after both volumes were standardized by the global gray-matter volume (S&#95;N&#95;volume). Significant group differences between longitudinal gray-matter volume change of the converted (from MCI to AD) group and that of the normal group were found in lateral temporal cortex by S&#95;N&#95;volume, and precuneus by S&#95;N&#95;volume. These findings are useful for improving the understanding of DMN volume changes at the converted (from MCI to AD) phase.

Object: To determine whether superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging could demonstrate signal recovery delay in irradiated areas of rat livers. We also investigated the relationship between MR imaging and histological findings., Materials and Methods: Twelve rats received 20 μmol iron/kg of SPIO followed by X-irradiation to the right upper abdomen 4 h later. Radiation doses were 0, 50 and 70 Gy. Hepatic signals were assessed on unenhanced T 2 (*) -weighted images for up to 7 days using a 9.4-Tesla scanner. The livers were excised on day 7 and examined histologically., Results: Normalized relative signal intensity of 70 Gy-irradiated right liver lobe (2.36 ± 0.22) and 50 Gy-irradiated right liver lobe (2.37 ± 0.46) was significantly lower than that of the non-irradiated right liver lobe (4.04 ± 0.28) on day 7, respectively (p < 0.05). Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient between relative intensity of the liver and the number of hepatic iron deposits was -0.588 (p < 0.01)., Conclusion: Superparamagnetic iron oxide-enhanced MR imaging could demonstrate signal recovery delay in irradiated areas of rat livers. It seems that the signal recovery delay in irradiated areas was due to SPIO-derived iron deposition. Hepatic signal recovery could be a novel diagnostic marker for delineation of irradiated areas.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enables the evaluation of organ structure and function. Oxygen-enhanced MRI (O2-enhanced MRI) is a method for evaluating the pulmonary ventilation function using oxygen as a contrast agent. We created the Cine View of Relative Enhancement Ratio Map (Cine RER map) in O2-enhanced MRI to easily observe the contrast effect for clinical use. Relative enhancement ratio (RER) was determined as the pixel values of the Cine RER map. Moreover, six healthy volunteers underwent O2-enhanced MRI to determine the appropriate scale width of the Cine RER map. We calculated each RER and set 0 to 1.27 as the scale width of the Cine RER map based on the results. The Cine RER map made it possible to observe the contrast effect over time and thus is a convenient tool for evaluating the pulmonary ventilation function in O2-enhanced MRI.

Purpose: To investigate the incidence of abnormal signal hyperintensity on T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the seminal vesicles in a screening population in order to compare clinical indicators between subjects with and without signal abnormality., Materials and Methods: Signal intensity of the seminal vesicles on T1-weighted images and clinical examinations were investigated in 3570 examinations of 1865 male subjects (mean age 54.8 years, range 23-86 years at the first examination)., Results: Abnormal signal hyperintensity was observed at least once in 32 subjects (1.7%). Subjects with the abnormality were significantly older (average age with and without the abnormality, 64.1 vs. 54.6, respectively, P < 0.001), and the incidence of abnormality increased with increasing age (0% for the age group <40, 0.3% for 40-49, 1.3% for 50-59, 2.9% for 60-69, 5.9% for 70-79, and 10.1% for >80). No significant difference was found in clinical indicators except for serum creatinine (1.10 vs. 0.84 mg/dL, P < 0.001). Of 12 subjects with abnormal signal intensity and follow-up data, the finding persisted on the same side for at least 11 months in seven subjects (58%)., Conclusion: Abnormal signal intensity of the seminal vesicles was observed in 1.7% of screening population, and the imaging finding in isolation is unlikely to have clinical significance., (Copyright © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Due to their small size, lung tumors in rodents are typically investigated using high-field magnetic resonance (MR) systems (4.7 T or higher) to achieve higher signal-to-noise ratios, although low-field MR systems are less sensitive to susceptibility artifacts caused by air in the lung. We investigated the feasibility of detecting lung tumors in living, freely breathing mice with a 1-T compact permanent magnet MR system. In total, 4 mice were used, and MR images of mouse lungs were acquired using a T1-weighted three-dimensional fast low-angle shot sequence without cardiac or respiratory gating. The delineation and size of lung tumors were assessed and compared with histopathological findings. Submillimeter lesions were demonstrated as hyperintense, relative to the surrounding lung parenchyma, and were delineated clearly. Among the 13 lesions validated in histopathological sections, 11 were detected in MR images; the MR detection rate was thus 84.6%. A strong correlation was obtained in size measurements between MR images and histological sections. Thus, a dedicated low-field MR system can be used to detect lung tumors in living mice noninvasively without gating.

Purpose: To test the feasibility of noninvasive global assessment of cerebral hemodynamic impairment with use of resting-state blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging., Materials and Methods: In this institutional review board-approved study, five patients with chronic hypoperfusion without neurologic impairment and six patients with acute stroke underwent 10-minute resting-state functional MR imaging and dynamic susceptibility-weighted contrast-enhanced perfusion MR imaging, which was considered the standard of reference. All patients gave informed consent. The temporal shift of low-frequency signal fluctuations in each voxel compared with the averaged whole brain or global mean signal at resting-state functional MR imaging and the delay in time to peak at dynamic susceptibility-weighted contrast-enhanced perfusion imaging were computed with voxel-wise analysis. The similarity of the temporal delay maps obtained with resting-state functional MR imaging and perfusion data, as well as the stability of the resting-state functional MR imaging measurement, were evaluated with the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and the two-tailed t test (random-effect analysis)., Results: The brain tissue with normal perfusion at dynamic susceptibility-weighted contrast-enhanced imaging showed no delay to global mean signal at resting-state functional MR imaging, whereas areas of abnormal perfusion with delayed time to peak (3.4 seconds ± 2.1) showed a delay at resting-state functional MR imaging that was similar to the time to peak at dynamic susceptibility-weighted contrast-enhanced perfusion imaging, both in spatial coverage (mean DSC, 0.57 ± 0.16) and tendency (t = 5.1, P < .001). Resting-state functional MR imaging measurements were highly stable (mean DSC, 0.83 ± 0.12)., Conclusion: Resting-state functional MR imaging temporal-shift analysis can noninvasively demonstrate the extent and degree of perfusion delay in patients with hypoperfusion both with and without neurologic deficit., (© RSNA, 2013.)

We present a case of a 69-year-old man with primary hepatic carcinosarcoma who underwent computed tomography that revealed a hypervascular hepatic tumor with local dense calcification. Gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging revealed hyperintense lesions in the hepatobiliary phase that indicated hepatocellular carcinoma with bile production. The patient underwent right lobectomy, and the presence of a sarcoma component within the tumor on histopathology confirmed liver carcinosarcoma that included hepatocellular carcinoma. In cases with atypical images that resemble this case, the hyperintensity of a lesion in the hepatobiliary phase aids differential diagnosis.

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of inter-scanner variability (bias) and of scanner upgrade on longitudinal changes in regional gray matter volume., Materials and Methods: A total of 215 normal subjects were scanned twice, at an interval of approximately 1 year, using two 3.0 Tesla (T) scanners of the exact same model. Both scanners were simultaneously upgraded during the study period. The subjects were divided into four groups according to the combination of scanners used at the two time points. Using VBM, we evaluated longitudinal changes in regional gray matter volume in each group and the effects of scanner upgrade on longitudinal changes., Results: The use of different scanners at two time points significantly influenced longitudinal changes in regional gray matter volume. Regional gray matter volumes were relatively stable within the same scanner, but significantly different between the two scanners. Scanner upgrade had effects comparable to those of using different scanners at the two time points., Conclusion: The results of our study indicate that, even with scanners of the exact same model, the use of different scanners at different time points significantly influences longitudinal morphometric results, and that scanner upgrade has effects comparable to those of using different scanners at different time points., (Copyright © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Purpose: To show an association between T2-weighted signal intensity (T2-SI) variation and missegmentation in the putamen of healthy adults, using 3.0-tesla magnetic resonance scanner and voxel-based morphomery (VBM)., Materials and Methods: Contiguous sagittal T1-weighted images and axial T2-weighted images of the brain were obtained from 1380 healthy participants using a 3.0 Tesla (T) MR scanner. After image preprocessing with Statistical Parametric Mapping 5, the association between T2-SI ratio (= A/B, where A is the mean of the T2-SI in the putamen, and B is that in the thalamus) variation and gray matter missegmentation was assessed using VBM., Results: A significant positive correlation was revealed between T2-SI ratio and bilateral putamen volume on the gray matter images. In addition, we found a significant negative correlation between T2-SI ratio and bilateral putamen volume on the white matter images. We consider that these results show the influence of missegmentation., Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first VBM study to demonstrate an association between T2-SI variation and gray matter missegmentation. These results indicate the possibility that VBM may be more affected by individual differences in iron content levels than by individual differences in tissue volumes if detected-regions with VBM contained substantial iron deposition., (Copyright © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate whether the effect of scanner for cortex volumetry with atlas-based method is reduced using Diffeomorphic Anatomical Registration Through Exponentiated Lie Algebra (DARTEL) normalization compared with standard normalization., Methods: Three-dimensional T1-weighted magnetic resonance images (3D-T1WIs) of 21 healthy subjects were obtained and evaluated for effect of scanner in cortex volumetry. 3D-T1WIs of the 21 subjects were obtained with five MRI systems. Imaging of each subject was performed on each of five different MRI scanners. We used the Voxel-Based Morphometry 8 tool implemented in Statistical Parametric Mapping 8 and WFU PickAtlas software (Talairach brain atlas theory). The following software default settings were used as bilateral region-of-interest labels: "Frontal Lobe," "Hippocampus," "Occipital Lobe," "Orbital Gyrus," "Parietal Lobe," "Putamen," and "Temporal Lobe.", Results: Effect of scanner for cortex volumetry using the atlas-based method was reduced with DARTEL normalization compared with standard normalization in Frontal Lobe, Occipital Lobe, Orbital Gyrus, Putamen, and Temporal Lobe; was the same in Hippocampus and Parietal Lobe; and showed no increase with DARTEL normalization for any region of interest (ROI)., Conclusion: DARTEL normalization reduces the effect of scanner, which is a major problem in multicenter studies.

Objective: The purpose of this article is to noninvasively visualize intrabiliary bile movement using an MRI spin-labeling technique and administration of water, full-fat milk, and negative contrast agent as stimuli for bile excretion., Subjects and Methods: Six healthy volunteers underwent three studies with each of three oral liquid agents (water, full-fat milk, and manganese chloride solution) for a total of 18 MRI studies. Oblique-coronal T2-weighted images of the common bile duct were acquired at an inversion time of 1500 milliseconds after pulse labeling using a spin-labeling technique with an inversion pulse, repeated at intervals of 22 seconds. Bile flow rate was measured before and for 50 minutes after administration of the oral liquid agents, and its correlation with the change in gallbladder volume was assessed., Results: Both anterograde and retrograde intermittent bile movements were successfully visualized in the common bile duct. The summation of excreted bile volume calculated from spin-labeled images correlated significantly with a decrease in gallbladder volume (p = 0.011). Milk stimulated significantly prolonged bile flow; flow was momentary with manganese chloride and mild with water; however, gallbladder volume decreased only in milk studies (p = 0.003). Biliary flow early after oral intake correlated significantly with gallbladder contractility at 50 minutes after oral intake (p = 0.049)., Conclusion: A new method for visualizing intrabiliary bile movement in semi-real time (22-second time resolution) using an MRI spin-labeling technique was proposed. Bile was shown to be excreted in a to-and-fro type of movement. Administration of water and negative contrast agent may induce temporary bile excretion.

Objective: Hepatic signal recovery, rather than reduction, in ferucarbotran-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a potential diagnostic marker of liver damage. We investigated hepatic signal recovery in rats with gadolinium chloride (GdCl3)-induced Kupffer cell (KC) damage., Materials and Methods: Twelve rats received 8 μmol iron/kg of ferucarbotran 1 day after 0-7.5 mg/kg GdCl3 injection (experiment A). Another 12 rats received ferucarbotran followed by GdCl3 injection 6 h later (experiment B). In each experiment, three rats without GdCl3 ("no injury group") served as control. Another six rats received GdCl3 alone without ferucarbotran. Hepatic signals were assessed on T 2 (*) -weighted images for up to 29 days. Iron deposits were histologically examined on day 29., Results: Hepatic signal recovery was delayed in a GdCl3 dose-dependent manner in experiment A. Gadolinium chloride alone reduced hepatic signal 15 % during this experiment. Hepatic signal recovery was delayed only in rats that received 7.5 mg/kg GdCl3 in experiment B. Hepatic signals negatively correlated with iron deposits in KCs and hepatocytes., Conclusion: Hepatic signal recovery on ferucarbotran-enhanced MRI was delayed in the context of GdCl3-induced KC damage due to increased hepatic iron deposits. Hepatic signal recovery may be used as a clinical marker of KC damage in liver disorders, including radiation-induced hepatitis.

Objective: The purpose of this article is to investigate the prevalence, volume, and location of peritoneal fluid accumulation and to clarify the clinical significance of a small amount of peritoneal fluid accumulation in healthy men and postmenopausal women on pelvic MRI., Materials and Methods: Pelvic MRI was performed on 1017 healthy men and 310 healthy postmenopausal women. Two radiologists independently interpreted images and judged the presence or absence of fluid in the peritoneal cavity. For cases in which peritoneal fluid was detected, the volume and the location were recorded., Results: Peritoneal fluid was identified in 39 of 1017 (3.8%) healthy men and 52 of 310 (16.8%) healthy postmenopausal women. Healthy postmenopausal women had a much higher prevalence than did healthy men (p < 0.0001). The mean (± SD) total volume of fluid accumulation was 3.0 ± 2.7 mL in healthy men and 2.3 ± 2.0 mL in postmenopausal women. The volume of total peritoneal fluid was less than 10 mL in all but one man, who had 10.3 mL of peritoneal fluid accumulation. Peritoneal fluid accumulation was located below the level of the S3 vertebra in all subjects., Conclusion: A small amount of peritoneal fluid accumulation is occasionally observed in healthy men and postmenopausal women on pelvic MRI. Pelvic peritoneal fluid accumulation of less than 10 mL is not considered to be of clinical significance in men and postmenopausal women.

Purpose: To investigate age-related differences, gender differences, and age-by-gender interactions on the volumes of 18 neuroanatomical structures, with a large sample at a single institution., Materials and Methods: A total of 861 normal subjects (mean age = 56.1 ± 9.8 years, age range = 24.0-84.8 years) were included in this study. All subjects were scanned at 3.0 T. Measurement of the 18 neuroanatomical volumes was performed with FreeSurfer v. 4.5. Differences in volumes of neuroanatomical structures were tested using analysis of covariance with intracranial volume-normalized volume as the dependent variable, and independent variables of age, sex, age × sex, age × age, age × age × sex, and scanner. Nonsignificant higher-order terms were removed sequentially from the model. A P value of < 0.0028 (=0.5/18) was considered to indicate a statistically significant difference., Results: All neuroanatomical volumes, except for the caudate nucleus, pallidum, and 4th ventricle, were significantly related to age (linearly or quadratically). Significant gender differences were found in all neuroanatomical volumes, except for cerebral white matter, cerebellar cortex, caudate nucleus, and amygdala. No neuroanatomical volume showed a significant interaction between age (age × age) and gender., Conclusion: Our results showed age and gender effects on neuroanatomical volumes, and indicate no gender difference in the aging process of neuroanatomical volumes., (Copyright © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the volume and number of tubers and the age at seizure onset in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex. We also examined the relationship between the volume and number of cyst-like tubers and the age at seizure onset., Materials and Methods: We retrospectively studied 23 patients with TSC (16 males and 7 females, mean age 12.4 ± 9.5 years). Routine structural MR-imaging data analysis was performed using QBrain. Total brain volume, total tuber volume, and the number of tubers were measured semi-automatically. Additionally, the total volume and the number of only cyst-like tubers were measured. The tuber/brain proportion (TBP) and the cyst-like tuber/brain proportion (cTBP) were calculated, and these were compared with the age at seizure onset. The numbers of tubers and cyst-like tubers were also compared with the age at seizure onset., Results: For both TBP and the number of tubers, a significant negative correlation with age at seizure onset was identified (ρ = -0.69, p < 0.01 and ρ = -0.56, p < 0.01). No significant correlation of cTBP or the number of cyst-like tubers with age at seizure onset was identified (ρ = -0.26, p = 0.37 and ρ = -0.048, p = 0.87)., Conclusion: TBP may be associated with age at seizure onset.

Background and Purpose: Restriction of diffusion has been reported in the early phase of secondary neuronal degeneration, such as wallerian degeneration. The purpose of this study was to investigate postoperative transient reduced diffusion in the ipsilateral striatum and thalamus as a remote effect of surgery., Materials and Methods: Six hundred two postoperative MR imaging examinations in 125 patients after cerebral surgery were retrospectively reviewed, focusing on the presence of reduced diffusion in the striatum and/or thalamus. The distribution of reduced diffusion in the striatum was classified into 3 groups: anterior, central, and posterior. Reduced diffusion in the thalamus was also classified on the basis of the anatomic locations of the thalamic nuclei. Further follow-up MRI was available in all patients with postoperative reduced diffusion, and acute infarctions were excluded. The patient medical records were reviewed to evaluate neurologic status., Results: Restriction of diffusion was observed in the striatum and/or thalamus ipsilateral to the surgical site in 17 patients (13.6%). The distribution of signal abnormality correlated with the location of the operation, in concordance with the architecture of the striatocortical and thalamocortical connections. Reduced diffusion was observed from days 7 to 46 after the operation, especially during days 8-21. The signal abnormalities completely resolved on follow-up examinations. The median follow-up period was 202 days (interquartile range, 76-487 days)., Conclusions: Postoperative transient reduced diffusion in the ipsilateral striatum and/or thalamus likely represents an early phase of secondary neuronal degeneration based on its characteristic distribution and time course. Clinically, this reduced diffusion should not be mistaken for postoperative ischemic injury.

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation between local gray matter volume and signal-to-noise ratio on T2-weighted imaging (T2-SNR) of putamen in healthy adults using two tools: voxel-based morphometry (VBM) treating age as a confounding covariate to control for age-related gray matter volume changes and high spatial resolution T1-weighted imaging acquired with a 3.0-T magnetic resonance (3T-MR) scanner., Methods: Contiguous sagittal T1-weighted images and axial T2-weighted images of the brain were obtained from 1,380 healthy participants. T2-SNR of putamen was defined as A/B, where A is the mean T2-weighted signal intensity (T2-SI) in the right and left sides of putamen, and B is the background noise. The software Statistical Parametric Mapping 5 was used for image segmentation. The association between T2-SNR of putamen and gray matter volume was assessed with VBM, treating age as a confounding covariate., Results: A significant positive correlation was obtained between T2-SNR of putamen and bilateral pre- and postcentral gyrus volume., Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first VBM study to show an age-independent relationship between T2-SNR of putamen and bilateral pre- and postcentral gyrus volumes in healthy adults.

Purpose: To investigate the natural outcome and clinical implication of hypointense lesions in the hepatobiliary phase of Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI., Materials and Methods: Forty patients underwent Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI for preoperative evaluation of HCC. Hypointense lesions in the hepatobiliary phase that were hypovascular 5mm of more were extracted for follow-up. We performed a longitudinal study retrospectively for these lesions regardless of whether classical HCC developed or emerged in a different area from that of the lesions being followed., Results: Thirty one patients displayed 130 hypointense lesions on MRI and only nine showed no hypointense lesions. In total, 17 (13.1%) of 130 hypointense lesions on MRI developed into classical HCC. The cumulative rates for these lesions to develop into classical HCC were 3.2% at 1 year, 11.1% at 2 years and 15.9% at 3 years. The total occurrence rates of classical HCC (25.8% at 1 year, 52.6% at 2 years and 76.4% at 3 years) were higher compared to those regarding only occurrence of classical HCC from hypointense lesions on MRI (10.0% at 1 year, 35.6% at 2 years and 44.6% at 3 years), although no significant difference was observed (p=0.073)., Conclusions: Hypointense lesions that are detected in the hepatobiliary phase of Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI have some malignant potential, although treating these lesions aggressively in patients who already have HCC may be too severe., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of normal aging on brain volumes and examine the effects of age and sex on the rates of changes in global and regional brain volumes., Methods: A total of 199 normal subjects (65 females and 134 males, mean age=56.4 ± 9.9 years, age range=38.1-82.9 years) were included in this study. Each subject was scanned twice, at an interval of about 2 years (range=1.5-2.3 years). Two-time-point percentage brain volume change (PBVC) was estimated with SIENA 2.6., Results: The mean annualized PBVC was -0.23%/y. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) for annual brain volume changes revealed a main effect of age. There was no main effect of sex, nor was there a sex-by-age interaction. Voxel-wise analysis revealed a negative correlation between age and edge displacement values mainly in the periventricular region., Conclusions: The results of our study indicate that brain atrophy accelerates with increasing age and that there is no gender difference in the rate of brain atrophy., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. The study aims to investigate the effect of cerebral ischemia or hypoperfusion in the evaluation of neural activity with blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and to examine whether the severity of the compromised hemodynamic status in patients with major cerebral artery diseases could, conversely, be assessed with the use of neural activity as endogenous vasodilator. 28 neurological impairment-free patients with anterior-circulation-territory ischemia performed a bimanual hand-grasping task. Magnitude and temporal shift of evoked BOLD response, baseline cerebral blood flow (CBF) and its increment, and the severity of hemodynamic impairment stratified by blood flow pattern were evaluated. For fMRI data, both conventional analysis with a canonical HRF and an HRF-model-free analysis were performed. The severity of hemodynamic impairment was significantly correlated (p<0.0001) with baseline CBF, CBF increment, and magnitude and delay of BOLD response. BOLD response delay was also significantly correlated (p<0.0001) with baseline CBF, CBF increment, and response magnitude. In 10 out of 45 ischemic motor cortices, conventional analysis completely failed to detect areas of activation that were demonstrated by HRF-model-free analysis. These data suggest that delay and reduced magnitude of BOLD response can be an indicator of the severity of compromised hemodynamic status, and that reduced regional baseline CBF and its increment underlie impaired BOLD response, which necessitates an alternative approach to conventional analysis with any single HRF., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. Objective: Many studies have reported pre-processing effects for brain volumetry; however, no study has investigated whether non-parametric non-uniform intensity normalization (N3) correction processing results in reduced system dependency when using an atlas-based method. To address this shortcoming, the present study assessed whether N3 correction processing provides reduced system dependency in atlas-based volumetry., Materials and Methods: Contiguous sagittal T1-weighted images of the brain were obtained from 21 healthy participants, by using five magnetic resonance protocols. After image preprocessing using the Statistical Parametric Mapping 5 software, we measured the structural volume of the segmented images with the WFU-PickAtlas software. We applied six different bias-correction levels (Regularization 10, Regularization 0.0001, Regularization 0, Regularization 10 with N3, Regularization 0.0001 with N3, and Regularization 0 with N3) to each set of images. The structural volume change ratio (%) was defined as the change ratio (%) = (100 × [measured volume - mean volume of five magnetic resonance protocols] / mean volume of five magnetic resonance protocols) for each bias-correction level., Results: A low change ratio was synonymous with lower system dependency. The results showed that the images with the N3 correction had a lower change ratio compared with those without the N3 correction., Conclusion: The present study is the first atlas-based volumetry study to show that the precision of atlas-based volumetry improves when using N3-corrected images. Therefore, correction for signal intensity non-uniformity is strongly advised for multi-scanner or multi-site imaging trials.

The aims of this study were to (1) investigate the repeatability of measured volumes using the atlas-based method in each area of the brain, and (2) validate our hypothesis that the repeatability of the measured volumes with the atlas-based method was improved by using smoothed images. T1-weighted magnetic resonance images were obtained in five healthy subjects using the 1.5-T scanner. We used Statistical Parametric Mapping 5 and WFU PickAtlas software (theory of the Talairach brain atlas). Volumes inside region-of-interest (ROI) were measured in ten sets (five subjects × right and left) on six ROIs, respectively. One set comprises five images (one subject × five 3D-T1WIs). The percentage change was defined as [100 × (measured volume-mean volume in each set)/mean volume in each set)]. As a result, the average percentage changes using non-smoothed image on each ROI were as follows: gray matter, 0.482%; white matter, 0.375%; cerebrospinal fluid images, 0.731%; hippocampus, 0.864%; orbital gyrus, 1.692%; cerebellum posterior lobe, 0.854%. Using smoothed images with large FWHM resulted in improved repeatability on orbital gyrus. This is the first report of repeatability in each brain structure and improved repeatability with smoothed images using the atlas-based method.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of longitudinal drift in scanner hardware, inter-scanner variability (bias), and scanner upgrade on longitudinal changes in global and regional diffusion properties using longitudinal data obtained on two scanners of the exact same model at one institution. A total of 224 normal subjects were scanned twice, at an interval of about 1 year, using two 3.0-T scanners of the exact same model. Both scanners were simultaneously upgraded during the study period. The subjects were divided into four groups according to the combination of scanners used. With use of tract-based spatial statistics, we evaluated the effects of scanner drift and inter-scanner variability (bias) on global and regional fractional anisotropy (FA), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD) changes of the white matter. Even with scanners of the exact same model, inter-scanner variability (bias) significantly affected longitudinal results. FA, AD, and RD of the white matter were relatively stable within the same scanner. We also investigated the effect of scanner upgrade on longitudinal FA, AD, and RD changes. The scanner upgrade included only software upgrade, not hardware upgrade; however, there was a significant effect of scanner upgrade on longitudinal results. These results indicate that inter-scanner variability and scanner upgrade can significantly affect the results of longitudinal diffusion tensor imaging studies., (Copyright © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Purpose: To investigate the long-term time course of the contrast effects after the intravenous injection of gadofluorine M or gadofluorine P in mice., Materials and Methods: Magnetic resonance images were acquired longitudinally after intravenous injection of 0.1 μmol Gd/g gadofluorine M into BALB/c mice. The contrast effects were also assessed in C57BL/6J mice injected with gadofluorine M, BALB/c mice injected with gadofluorine P, and BALB/c mice injected with a double dose of gadopentetate dimeglumine., Results: The injection of gadofluorine M into BALB/c mice caused prolonged contrast effects in the blood and other organs. The liver enhancement was especially long-lasting and still evident 6 days after injection. Strain-related differences in contrast kinetics of gadofluorine M were not observed between BALB/c mice and C57BL/6J mice. In comparison with gadofluorine M, clearances from the blood, liver, and kidney were more rapid and contrast enhancement in the spleen was generally lower for gadofluorine P. The enhancement in the gallbladder cavity, indicating biliary excretion, was evident only after gadofluorine P injection. Blood enhancement at 10 min was much weaker for gadopentetate dimeglumine., Conclusion: Both gadofluorine M and gadofluorine P appear to be applicable to blood pool imaging and liver imaging in mice.

Purpose: We aimed to show that correcting image distortion significantly affects brain volumetry using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and to assess whether the processing of distortion correction reduces system dependency., Materials and Methods: We obtained contiguous sagittal T(1)-weighted images of the brain from 22 healthy participants using 1.5- and 3-tesla magnetic resonance (MR) scanners, preprocessed images using Statistical Parametric Mapping 5, and tested the relation between distortion correction and brain volume using VBM., Results: Local brain volume significantly increased or decreased on corrected images compared with uncorrected images. In addition, the method used to correct image distortion for gradient nonlinearity produced fewer volumetric errors from MR system variation., Conclusion: This is the first VBM study to show more precise volumetry using VBM with corrected images. These results indicate that multi-scanner or multi-site imaging trials require correction for distortion induced by gradient nonlinearity.

Background and Purpose: DTI provides a sensitive measure of change in the microstructure of white matter integrity. The purpose of our study was to investigate age-related changes, sex differences, and age-by-sex interactions in white matter integrity (FA, AD, and RD) across the whole brain with a large sample., Materials and Methods: A total of 857 healthy subjects (mean age = 56.1 ± 9.9 years; age range = 24.9-84.8 years) were included in this study. All subjects were scanned at 3T. With use of TBSS, we examined the effects of age and sex on FA, AD, and RD in the white matter., Results: Global FA was negatively correlated with age (R(2) = 0.18, P < .0001), and global AD and RD were positively correlated with age (AD: R(2) = 0.02, P < .0001; RD: R(2) = 0.19, P < .0001). The correlation between age and global AD, however, was weak. Voxelwise analysis revealed a number of regions where FA was negatively correlated with age, with most of these regions showing a significant positive correlation between RD and age. There was a significant age-related FA increase in several white matter regions. Voxelwise analysis also revealed many regions where FA, AD, or RD differed between men and women; however, no region showed a significant interaction between age and sex., Conclusions: Our results suggest that age-related changes in white matter integrity are more strongly associated with myelin sheath degeneration than with axonal degeneration, and that, in some specific regions, the number of remyelinated axons might increase with age. Our results also suggest that there are no sex differences in the aging process of the white matter.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the imaging findings of retroportal main pancreatic duct (RMPD), a rare anomaly of the pancreas, and circumportal pancreas (CP) on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. We also reviewed the previous literature and discussed its best imaging method, etiology and clinical importance., Methods: This work is a retrospective study. Two cases of RMPD were enrolled. The imaging findings of RMPD and CP were reviewed among the various CT and MR images obtained. Differences in visualization among the scans were evaluated using a four-stage model., Results: RMPD was always accompanied by CP. RMPD was detectable on contrast-enhanced CT but not on noncontrasted CT. RMPD was shown most clearly on arterial, portal and late phases of contrast-enhanced CT, contrast-enhanced fat-suppressed T1-weighted images and fat-suppressed T2-weighted images. CP was much easier to detect than RMPD and could be identified even on noncontrasted images., Conclusions: We described the fourth and the fifth reported cases of RMPD. This is the first study to describe its MR imaging findings. CP was always present in cases of RMPD and was easily detectable on tomographic images. When radiologists or surgeons notice CP, it is necessary to pay attention to the course of the main pancreatic duct, particularly preoperatively to avoid surgical complications. Purpose: To compare the diagnostic performance of Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI with that of triple phase 64-MDCT in the detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)., Patients and Methods: Thirty-four patients with 52 surgically proven lesions underwent Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI and triple phase 64-MDCT. Two observers independently evaluated MR and CT imaging on a lesion-by-lesion basis. Sensitivity, positive and negative predictive values and reproducibility were evaluated. The diagnostic accuracy of each modality was assessed with alternative-free response receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis., Results: Both observers showed higher sensitivity in detecting lesions with MRI compared to CT, however, only the difference between the two imaging techniques for observer 2 was significant (P=0.034). For lesions 1cm or smaller, MRI and CT showed equal sensitivity (both 62.5%) with one observer, and MRI proved superior to CT with the other observer (MRI 75% vs. CT 56.3%), but the latter difference was not significant (P=0.083). The difference in positive and negative predictive value between the two imaging techniques for each observer was not significant (P>0.05). The areas under the ROC curve for each observer were 0.843 and 0.861 for MRI vs. 0.800 and 0.833 for CT and the differences were not significant. Reproducibility was higher using MRI for both observers, but the result was not significant (MRI 32/33 vs. CT 29/33, P=0.083)., Conclusion: Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI tended to show higher diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and reproducibility compared to triple phase 64-MDCT in the detection of hepatocellular carcinoma, however statistical significance was not achieved., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Introduction: The study was conducted to evaluate simultaneously gray matter changes and white matter changes in patients with schizophrenia., Methods: Cortical thickness, gray matter volume, and white matter anisotropy and diffusivity changes in schizophrenic patients (n = 21) were assessed relative to age-, gender-, and parental socioeconomic status-matched healthy controls (n = 21). We used a newly described semi-automated method (FreeSurfer version 4.5) to determine cortical thickness and gray matter volume and used the tract-based spatial statistics method to evaluate white matter anisotropy and diffusivity., Results: Schizophrenic patients showed a significant decrease in hippocampal volume compared with healthy controls. No significant thickness deficits or anisotropy and diffusivity changes were found in schizophrenic patients compared with healthy controls. Stepwise multivariate analysis revealed that hippocampal volume was positively related to duration of illness in schizophrenic patients., Conclusion: Our results suggest that hippocampal volume is smaller in schizophrenic patients compared with healthy controls and that progressive hippocampal volume loss occurs in the early course of illness in schizophrenic patients but not in the more chronic stages.

We assessed lymph drainage in living mice by an integrated imaging method using fluorescence imaging (FLI) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Mice were subcutaneously injected with quantum dots and gadofluorine 8 into the right rear footpad. They were fixed on a transparent flat plate and underwent FLI and MRI successively. Small markers were attached to the mouse surface for spatial coregistration, and image fusion of FLIs and MRIs was performed. Two-dimensional fluorescence reflectance imaging was used for FLI. FLI and MRI provided generally consistent results and demonstrated lymphatic flow to the popliteal, sacral, and iliac lymph nodes in most mice and to the renal, inguinal, and lumbar-aortic lymph nodes in some mice. On the fusion images, the locations of the lymph nodes in the mouse trunk were in good agreement between FLI and MRI, indicating successful spatial registration even for the deep structures. The popliteal node tended to be visualized a little farther caudally in FLI than in MRI, presumably because the overlying tissues were thicker in the cranial portion. Integrated FLI/MRI lymphography with image fusion appears to be a useful tool for analysis of the murine lymphatic system.

Introduction: Previous studies revealed a correlation between local brain volume and cognitive function. The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation between local gray matter volume and the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) logical/verbal memory (WMS-R-verbal) score in healthy adults using a 3 Tesla magnetic resonance scanner and voxel-based morphometry (VBM)., Methods: T1-weighted magnetic resonance images were obtained in 1,169 healthy adults. The T1-weighted images in native space were bias-corrected, spatially normalized, and segmented into gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid images with Statistical Parametric Mapping 5. To investigate regionally the specific effects of the WMS-R-verbal score on the gray matter images, simple regression analysis was performed by VBM treating age, total intracranial volume, and gender as confounding covariates. A P value of less than 0.05 corrected with false discovery rate in voxel difference was considered to be statistically significant., Results: Our study showed a significant positive correlation between the WMS-R-verbal score and the bilateral entorhinal cortex volume. In the right entorhinal, T value is 4.75, and the size of the clusters is 155 voxels. In the left entorhinal, T value is 4.08, and the size of the clusters is 23 voxels. A significant negative correlation was not found., Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first VBM study showing that entorhinal cortex volume is positively correlated with the WMS-R-verbal score for healthy subjects. Therefore, in our structural neuroimaging study, we add evidence to the hypothesis that the entorhinal cortex is involved in verbal memory processing.

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of drift in scanner hardware and inter-scanner variability on global and regional brain volume changes using longitudinal data obtained on two scanners of the exact same model., Materials and Methods: A total of 208 subjects (70 females and 138 males, mean age = 56.5 ± 10.1 years) were scanned twice, at an interval of approximately 2 years (mean interval = 1.9 ± 0.15 years), using two 3.0 Tesla (T) scanners of the exact same model. The subjects were divided into four groups according to the combination of scanners used. The effects of scanner drift and inter-scanner variability on global and regional brain volume changes were evaluated using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and structural image evaluation using normalization of atrophy (SIENA)., Results: The mean whole brain volume calculated using VBM increased by 17.2 ± 29.3 mL, and the changes were significantly different between groups. The mean percentage brain volume change (PBVC) calculated using SIENA was -0.46 ± 0.71 %, and did not differ between groups. VBM showed several regions with a significant increase or decrease in volume; however, SIENA showed that edge displacement values were negative in most regions., Conclusion: Even with scanners of the exact same model, scanner drift, and inter-scanner variability can cancel out actual longitudinal brain volume change. SIENA, which corrects for differences in imaging geometry using the outer skull surface for both time points, can reduce the effects of scanner drift and inter-scanner variability on longitudinal morphometric results., (Copyright © 2011 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

Purpose: To develop a method for body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of conscious mice and investigate the effect of isoflurane anesthesia and hypothermia on the hepatic kinetics of gadoxetate disodium (Gd-EOB-DTPA)., Materials and Methods: Conscious or anesthetized mice were restrained on a holder and the rectal temperature was measured serially. Serial MRI of the liver was performed after intravenous injection of Gd-EOB-DTPA with or without temperature control. Three mice were studied for each condition., Results: The temperature dropped rapidly in anesthetized mice beside the MR unit. The decline was less prominent in conscious mice. The temperature decreased less in anesthetized mice and remained constant in conscious mice in the radiofrequency (RF) coil. The washout of Gd-EOB-DTPA was slower in anesthetized hypothermic mice than in conscious normothermic mice. Warmed anesthetized mice showed faster washout, and cooled conscious mice showed delayed washout. Severer hypothermia in anesthetized mice resulted in weaker initial enhancement and slower washout., Conclusion: By separately manipulating the presence or absence of anesthesia and hypothermia, we demonstrated that washout of Gd-EOB-DTPA was delayed under hypothermia, regardless of anesthesia. Serial body MRI of conscious mice was feasible and allowed the evaluation of kinetics of a contrast agent, while excluding the possible effects of anesthesia., (Copyright © 2011 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

Our aim in the present additional study was to investigate the absolute hippocampal volume in normal adults who were divided into eight groups according to their age and gender, because our previous study with voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was not able to show the absolute hippocampal volume. High-spatial-resolution T1-weighted images with 3.0 Tesla magnetic resonance scanners were obtained on 412 healthy adults who were divided into 8 groups, according to age and gender, for analysis of brain volume change focusing on hippocampal volume. Hippocampal regions of interest were obtained with WFU PickAtlas software. As a result, the present study revealed a significant difference bilaterally between the groups of females in their forties and those in their fifties. Because this result is the same as that of our previous study with VBM, it adds evidence to the hypothesis that menopause is associated with hippocampal volume reduction. However, the result between groups of males in their sixties and those in their seventies was inconsistent in both studies. In conclusion, the present study showed that reduction in the hippocampal volume over one decade was small compared to the standard deviation in each group. This study is useful for improving our understanding of the correlation between menopause and hippocampal volume reduction.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to establish a distortion correction applicable to whole-body imaging of live mice., Materials and Methods: All magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were acquired on a compact 1-T permanent magnet unit for mouse imaging using a T1-weighted, three-dimensional (3D) fast low-angle shot sequence. We assessed geometric distortion in MR images of a small 3D grid phantom and determined 3D image transformations for distortion correction. The developed distortion correction was applied to MR images of the 3D grid phantom acquired on another day, and the correction was validated. A two-dimensional (2D) grid phantom was imaged with a mouse to investigate the applicability of the distortion correction to whole-body mouse imaging., Results: Obvious geometric distortion was observed in the MR images of the 3D grid phantom. The application of the developed 3D phantom-based distortion correction reduced distortion in the images of the 3D grid phantom acquired on another day. Geometric distortion was observed in the MR images of the 2D grid phantom acquired together with the mouse. The 3D phantom-based correction decreased the distortion substantially, regardless of mouse positioning., Conclusion: The developed distortion correction can reduce distortion in whole-body imaging of live mice and may enhance the capabilities of MRI in small animal experiments.
