Purpose: Abnormalities in hepatic oxygen delivery and oxygen consumption may serve as a significant indicator of hepatic cellular dysfunction and may predict treatment response. However, conventional and oxygen-enhanced hepatic BOLD MRI can only provide semiquantitative assessment of hepatic oxygenation., Methods: A hepatic quantitative BOLD (qBOLD) model was proposed for noninvasive mapping of hepatic venous blood oxygen saturation (Y v ) and deoxygenated blood volume (DBV) in human subjects. The validity and the estimation bias of the proposed model were evaluated by Monte Carlo simulations. Eight healthy subjects were scanned after written consent with institutional review board approval., Results: Monte Carlo simulations demonstrated that the proposed single-compartment hepatic qBOLD model leads to significant deviation of the predicted T 2 * decay profile from the simulated signal due to high hepatic blood volume fraction. Small relative estimation bias for hepatic Y v and significant overestimation for hepatic DBV were observed, which can be corrected by applying the calibration curves established from simulations. After correction, the mean hepatic Y v in human subjects was 56.8 ± 6.8%, and the mean hepatic DBV was 0.190 ± 0.035, consistent with measurements from other invasive approaches. Except in regions with significant vascular contamination, the maps for hepatic Y v and DBV were relatively homogenous., Conclusions: With estimation bias correction, the hepatic qBOLD approach enables noninvasive mapping of hepatic blood volume and oxygenation in human subjects. Background: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) status is an important prognostic factor for patients with breast cancer, which is currently determined in clinical practice by invasive SLN biopsy., Purpose: To noninvasively predict SLN metastasis in breast cancer using dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) intra- and peritumoral radiomics features combined with or without clinicopathologic characteristics of the primary tumor., Study Type: Retrospective., Population: A total of 163 breast cancer patients (55 positive SLN and 108 negative SLN)., Field Strength/sequence: 1.5T, T 1 -weighted DCE-MRI., Assessment: A total of 590 radiomic features were extracted for each patient from both intratumoral and peritumoral regions of interest. To avoid overfitting, the dataset was randomly separated into a training set (∼67%) and a validation set (∼33%). The prediction models were built with the training set using logistic regression on the most significant radiomic features in the training set combined with or without clinicopathologic characteristics. The prediction performance was further evaluated in the independent validation set., Statistical Tests: Mann-Whitney U-test, Spearman correlation, least absolute shrinkage selection operator (LASSO) regression, logistic regression, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis were performed., Results: Combining radiomic features with clinicopathologic characteristics, six features were automatically selected in the training set to establish the prediction model of SLN metastasis. In the independent validation set, the area under ROC curve (AUC) was 0.869 (NPV = 0.886). Using radiomic features alone in the same procedure, 4 features were selected and the validation set AUC was 0.806 (NPV = 0.824)., Data Conclusion: This is the first attempt to demonstrate the feasibility of using DCE-MRI radiomics to predict SLN metastasis in breast cancer. Clinicopathologic characteristics improved the prediction performance. This study provides noninvasive methods to evaluate SLN status for guiding further treatment of breast cancer patients, and can potentially benefit those with negative SLN, by eliminating unnecessary invasive lymph node removal and the associated complications, which is a step further towards precision medicine., Level of Evidence: 1 Technical Efficacy: Stage 2 J. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis during pregnancy in a multiinstitutional study., Study Design: In this multicenter retrospective study, the cases of pregnant women who underwent MRI evaluation of abdominal or pelvic pain and who had clinical suspicion of acute appendicitis between June 1, 2009, and July 31, 2014, were reviewed. All MRI examinations with positive findings for acute appendicitis were confirmed with surgical pathologic information. Sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive values, and positive predictive values were calculated. Receiver operating characteristic curves were generated, and area under the curve analysis was performed for each participating institution., Results: Of the cases that were evaluated, 9.3% (66/709) had MRI findings of acute appendicitis. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive values were 96.8%, 99.2%, 99.0%, 92.4%, and 99.7%, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between centers that were included in the study (pair-wise probability values ranged from 0.12-0.99)., Conclusion: MRI is useful and reproducible in the diagnosis of suspected acute appendicitis during pregnancy., (Published by Elsevier Inc.)

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has emerged as an important imaging modality for the assessment of cirrhosis and its complications. Faster sequences now allow high-quality liver imaging with high intrinsic soft-tissue contrast. Automated contrast detection methods in combination with faster sequences allow reproducible capture of the arterial phase, which is essential for the detection and characterization of hepatocellular carcinoma. The lack of ionizing radiation permits routine use of gadolinium-enhanced three-dimensional (3D) fat-suppressed multiphasic imaging with high temporal and spatial resolution. In addition, MR imaging allows simultaneous evaluation of the background liver parenchyma and the liver lesions with the combined use of sequences that include T2-weighted sequences, T1-weighted sequences (including chemical shift imaging), echoplanar diffusion-weighted sequences, dynamic gadolinium-enhanced 3D multiphasic imaging, and liver-specific delayed phase sequences (if contrast agents with hepatobiliary excretion are used). The combination of findings from different sequences often helps pinpoint the nature of the liver abnormalities.

On state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging, most lesions can be detected and characterized with confidence according to well-known criteria. However, atypical characteristics in some common lesions and the incidental encounter with rare lesions may pose diagnostic difficulties. In this article, six challenging hepatic lesions will be discussed and evaluated on the most important magnetic resonance imaging sequences, with histological correlation when available. In addition, the background information concerning these lesions will be described based on the most recent available literature. By reading this article, the reader will be able to (1) categorize the lesion in solid and fluid-containing lesions, based on the T2 signal intensity; and (2) define the benign or malignant nature of the lesion, in relation to the signal intensity and dynamic enhancement pattern, despite the presence of atypical characteristics of some lesions.

Magnetic resonance imaging is routinely used for the workup of patients with focal or diffuse liver disease, including primary hepatocellular lesions, storage diseases, metastatic liver disease, and diseases of the hepatobiliary tree. The most important magnetic resonance imaging sequences used for diagnostic imaging of the liver consist of T1-weighted sequences, T2-weighted sequences, and at least the arterial and delayed phases of dynamic gadolinium-enhanced imaging. This article provides an overview of magnetic resonance imaging of primary hepatocellular lesions and will describe the following: (1) the classification and etiology of primary hepatocellular lesions, including focal nodular hyperplasia, hepatocellular adenoma, and hepatocellular carcinoma; (2) the stepwise carcinogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhosis on magnetic resonance imaging; and (3) the typical imaging findings of primary hepatocellular lesions on magnetic resonance imaging, with differential diagnoses.

Purpose: To determine the benefits of variable-rate selective-excitation (VERSE) radio frequency (RF) pulses for increased slice coverage in breathhold (BH) fat-suppressed T2-weighted fast spin-echo (FS-T2W-FSE) liver imaging at 3.0T., Materials and Methods: A total of 12 healthy volunteers were imaged on 3.0T, using FS-T2W-FSE. Slice coverage and specific absorption rate (SAR) levels were monitored for VERSE-RF and standard-RF (sRF), respectively. BH time was 25 seconds; slice thickness 3.5 mm. Maximum coverage was recorded for interactive variation of repetition time (TR), bandwidth (BW), and echo-train length (ETL). Image quality was assessed qualitatively and quantitatively., Results: Total slice coverage was always higher using VERSE-RF, but varied depending on the selected parameters. For BW > or = 62.5 kHz, slice coverage using VERSE increased between 38% (TR = 8200 msec) and 58% (TR = 2500 msec). Maximum coverage was obtained for TR = 5000 msec, ETL = 12, and BW > or = 62.5 kHz; with a mean of 31.8 slices for VERSE-RF and 22.5 slices for sRF, respectively (P < 0.005, 41% increased coverage). SAR was lower for VERSE-RF using BW < 41.67 kHz (P < 0.05), and equal to sRF for higher BW. Image quality was best for TR < or = 5000 msec (P < 0.05). FS was more homogeneous for lower ETL (P < 0.05). Blood suppression was best for TR < or = 5000 msec (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: VERSE-RF pulses can be applied for thin-slice BH FS-T2W liver imaging at 3.0T, with significantly improved slice coverage.

Purpose: To assess the relationship between lesion size and MR imaging findings of pathologically-proven hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)., Materials and Methods: In a retrospective, single-center study, 37 consecutive patients were identified between 1999 and 2005 that underwent preoperative MRI and surgical resection of HCC. A total of 47 lesions (mean size = 6.85 cm, range = 1-25 cm) were assessed for signal intensity (SI), enhancement patterns, and secondary morphologic features. Interobserver rating, percentage enhancement, and contrast-to-noise-ratio (CNR) were determined. Lesions were assessed for combinations of typical MRI features. Regression analysis was used to assess relations between MRI findings and tumor size., Results: On fat-suppressed T2-weighted (T2w) fast-spin-echo, smaller lesions had lower SI compared to larger lesions (P < 0.05). In the arterial phase, smaller lesions showed significantly higher percentage enhancement compared to larger lesions (P < 0.05). In the delayed phase, smaller lesions showed less pronounced washout (P < 0.05). Heterogeneity of the lesions, including fatty infiltration, internal nodules, or mosaic pattern, was observed significantly more frequently in larger lesions (P < 0.001). The classic combination of high T2w signal, strong arterial enhancement, and delayed phase washout was present in 23 of 44 lesions (52%)., Conclusion: Smaller HCC often showed lower SI on T2w, more intense arterial enhancement, and less pronounced delayed washout compared to larger HCC., ((c) 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

The recent development of the transmit-receive body coil and the dedicated torso phased-array radio frequency receive coil for 3.0T MR imaging systems has promoted a move toward higher-field, whole-body MR imaging, including pelvic MR imaging. The female pelvis is an anatomic area that may benefit particularly from the advantages of high-field systems. In this article, the authors present their initial experience with the optimization of sequences for MR imaging of the female pelvis at 3.0T, and include a short description of parallel imaging. They compare some of the physical properties of 1.5T and 3.0T, discuss some of the challenges during sequence optimization for the female pelvis at 3.0T, and give examples of female pelvic abnormalities.

Purpose: To demonstrate imaging findings of stepwise carcinogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in cirrhosis at serial state-of-the-art MR imaging exams., Materials and Methods: In a retrospective search of the hospital archives, three patients were identified in which developing HCC was observed in serial MR examinations, with histopathology or alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) correlation. Image findings were assessed for signal intensity of the lesions at multiple sequences, including dynamic gadolinium-enhanced imaging., Results: Initial findings in patient A showed a small nodule with fatty infiltration that developed in HCC in follow-up MRI, comprised of low-grade dysplastic nodule (DN; DN I), high-grade DN (DN II), and eventually classic HCC. In patient B, increased signal intensity on T2-weighted images in a single DN among numerous regenerative nodules was the only initial sign. Follow up MRI showed further increase in signal intensity and increased neovascularity, which suggested focal HCC in a DN II. Patient C demonstrated gradually increasing neovascularity as only initial sign, with development of classic HCC over time., Conclusion: MR imaging provides insight in various pathways of stepwise carcinogenesis of developing HCC in cirrhosis. Purpose: To image a cohort of patients with pathology-proven focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) to assess which characteristics of state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the liver are the most useful for improving the detection and characterization of FNH., Materials and Methods: In 14 patients, pathology-proven FNH (N=33) were prospectively examined using gadolinium (Gd) and superparamagnetic iron-oxide (SPIO) contrast media. All lesions were evaluated for signal intensity (SI), fatty infiltration, central scar, mode of enhancement with Gd, and uptake of SPIO. The percentage of dynamic contrast enhancement in the arterial, portal, and delayed phases was assessed. The contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) before and after administration of SPIO contrast was calculated., Results: The SI of the lesions was low to isointense on T1-weighted (T1W) images, and intermediate to isointense on T2W images. Fatty infiltration of the lesions was present in 6%. The percentages of enhancement in the liver and lesion were 110%, 115%, and 95%, and 151%, 182%, and 160%, respectively (P<0.0001). All lesions showed uptake of SPIO with improved conspicuity of the central scar and septa. The CNR values precontrast and post-Gd/SPIO were significantly different for T1 in- and opposed-phase and black-blood echo-planar imaging (BBEPI)., Conclusion: Combining dynamic Gd-enhanced imaging with T1W and T2W sequences after administration of SPIO facilitates comprehensive evaluation of FNH., (Copyright (c) 2006 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

MR imaging is establishing a role as a primary diagnostic technique, with increasing evidence showing MR imaging to have advantages over CT regarding diagnostic sensitivity and specificity for many pathologies of solid organs, bile and pancreatic ducts, bowel, peritoneum, and retroperitoneum. In addition, there are increasing concerns regarding the risks of radiation and iodinated contrast associated with CT imaging of the abdomen. The incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy associated with iodinated contrast used for CT scanning is difficult to ascertain because reporting is spurious and variable in interpretation.

Most cases of fistula-in-ano are nonspecific and result from inflammation of anal glands and crypts (cryptoglandular). The classification of cryptoglandular fistulas depends on the degree of involvement of the anal sphincter complex and determines the type of treatment. Studies have shown that preoperative MR imaging revealed important additional information compared with surgery alone and better predicts clinical outcome of patients with fistula-in-ano than initial surgical exploration. With the emergence of novel surgical treatments like MRI-guided surgery, laser, and adhesive treatments, MR imaging is a mainstay for preprocedural and intraoperative evaluation to ensure the adequacy of the procedure.

The development of transmit-receive body coils and local and phased-array radiofrequency receive coils for 3.0-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, and their recent approval in Europe and North America has promoted a move toward higher field, whole-body MRI. With approximately double the signal-noise ratio of a 1.5-T system, 3.0-T MR systems can substantially improve image quality and image acquisition speed; 3.0 T can potentially deliver square root(2) improvement in resolution in the same acquisition time of a comparable study at 1.5 T or one-half slice thickness with identical coverage or 4-fold speedup in scanning time for identical resolution settings. Parallel imaging, multiple coil elements, specific absorption rate, and altered MR physical properties at 3.0 T (T1 relaxation times, susceptibility, T2*) are important issues during optimization of sequences at high field. Possible future applications in the abdomen include high-resolution, contrast-enhanced imaging of the liver and pancreas; MR angiography; and MR spectroscopy. In this article, we will present our initial experience with optimization of sequences for abdominal MRI at 3.0 T and will include a short description of parallel imaging because of its importance for imaging at 3.0 T, general remarks comparing some of the physical properties of 1.5 T and 3.0 T, and some of the challenges during sequence optimization for the abdomen at 3.0 T with examples of abdominal MRI at 3.0 T with 4- and 8-channel coils.

In summary, MR imaging is superior to other imaging modalities, including CT, for the work-up of liver masses. The current challenge is whether the superior performance of MR imaging translates into a beneficial effect on patient management, disease outcome, and health care costs. New MR sequences, phased-array surface coils, and tissue-specific MR contrast agents suggest that MR imaging may exceed further the diagnostic ability of CT.

This article reviews fundamental principles and sequence techniques that have been used successfully for imaging diseases of the abdomen and pelvis at 1.5 Tesla. This article also introduces concepts and the specific alteration of sequence parameters for optimization of abdominal-pelvic imaging at 3 Tesla.

Comprehensive bowel examination results from the combined use of T2-weighted single-shot and breath hold T1-weighted gradient echo, minus/plus fat suppression, and gadolinium-enhanced 3D gradient echo (3D VIBE, T1 FAME, 3D THRIVE). Gadolinium-enhanced imaging should be performed dynamically, but the venous 60- to 90-second delayed phase images with fat suppression are generally the most valuable. Removal of fat signal for detection of enhancing normal and abnormal structures is critical. Newly available True-FISP (FIESTA, BFFE) sequences obtained in the 2D form can be very helpful in delineation of bowel wall pathology and overall bowel anatomy, particularly when combined with a water-based intraluminal distending agent. Advantages include rapid acquisition, high signal-to-noise, and motion insensitivity. Generalized protocol for comprehensive evaluation of the entire abdomen and pelvis can be used for the following bowel indications: type and severity of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); identifying enteric abscesses and fistulae; preoperative staging of malignant neoplasms, including rectal carcinoma; differentiating postoperative and radiation therapy changes from recurrent carcinoma; follow-up evaluation of metastases response to localized ablative or systemic chemotherapy. For improved visualization of bowel wall in dedicated examinations, bowel distension should be achieved using either orally or rectally delivered contrast agents to produce either bright or dark lumen. We have found 2D True-FISP without fat suppression superior to 3D True-FISP and to single-shot echo-train sequences to provide a T2-weighted image of bowel morphology. Strengths include: performed without fat suppression results in the very dark bowel wall being sandwiched between intermediate high signal fat adjacent to bowel serosa, and very high lumen signal from water-distending agent; 2D True-FISP provides motion insensitivity that is lost if 3D is used; True-FISP produces better edge sharpness than single-shot echo-train, higher contrast, and resists flow void artifacts commonly seen with single-shot echo-train imaging combined with a water distending agent. Drawbacks of this technique include: artifacts related to extreme sensitivity to field inhomogeneity, including air-soft tissue interfaces at the patient skin surface, and from retained bowel gas; retained bowel gas is dark against dark bowel wall, impairing bowel wall assessment; and True-FISP does not provide sensitivity for edema, which is superior on single-shot echo-train imaging. Small/large bowel indications for MRI include: inflammatory bowel disease, infectious disease including abscess evaluation or for appendicitis, inflammatory conditions including ischemia, and partial obstruction, malnutrition, and neoplasm search.

Objectives: To determine agreement between hydrogen peroxide-enhanced three-dimensional endoanal ultrasonography (3D HPUS) and endoanal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in preoperative assessment of perianal fistulas, and to assess patient preference with regard to these techniques., Methods: Forty patients (31 males, aged 21-70 years) with symptoms of a perianal fistula and a visible external opening underwent preoperative 3D HPUS and endoanal MRI. The results were assessed separately by experienced observers. Fistulas were described according to the following characteristics: classification of the primary fistula tract according to Parks, location of the internal opening, presence of secondary tracts and fluid collections. Patients were asked to score the amount of discomfort experienced during both procedures and express their preference for either method., Results: The median time interval between 3D HPUS and endoanal MRI was 14 days (range, 0-91 days). The methods agreed in 88% (35/40, kappa = 0.45) for the primary fistula tract, in 90% (36/40, kappa = 0.83) for the location of the internal opening, in 78% (31/40, kappa = 0.62) for secondary tracts, and in 88% (35/40, kappa = 0.63) for fluid collections. Both methods were associated with similar discomfort, and there was no patient preference for one procedure over the other., Conclusions: 3D HPUS and endoanal MRI are equally adequate for the evaluation of perianal fistulas. Both methods are associated with similar discomfort and patients have no preference for either procedure.

In the last decade, computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) colonography, two new cross-sectional techniques for imaging of the colon, emerged. Both techniques show promising initial results in the detection of polyps equal to or greater than 1 cm in diameter in symptomatic patients. Imaging protocols are still mostly under development and prone to change. Both CT and MR colonography generate a large number of source images, which have to be read carefully for filling defects and, if intravenous contrast material is used, enhancing lesions. An important postprocessing technique is multiplanar reformatting, which allows the viewer to see potential lesions in an orientation other than that of the source images. Virtual endoscopy, a volume rendering technique that generates images from within the colon lumen, is used for problem solving. CT and MR colonography have potential advantages over colonoscopy and double-contrast barium enema examination: multiplanar capabilities, detection of enhancing lesions that make the distinction between fecal residue and true lesion possible, and ante- and retrograde virtual colonoscopy. Currently, a number of studies suggest that patients have a preference for CT colonography over colonoscopy. Patients consider bowel cleansing the most uncomfortable part of any colon examination; hence, from the acceptance point of view, fecal tagging techniques are promising. Before CT and MR colonography can be implemented in daily practice, they must show approximately the same accuracy as colonoscopy for polyp detection in both symptomatic and screening patients., (Copyright RSNA, 2003)

Currently in many centers, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is the technique of choice for the assessment of brachial plexopathies. The anatomy of the brachial plexus is complex, and is surrounded by other anatomic structures, making artifact-free imaging quite challenging. With the faster breathing-independent and breath-hold MR imaging sequences, brachial plexopathies can be assessed with more confidence. Over a 2-year period, 20 patients underwent MR imaging of the brachial plexus at our department. MR imaging was based on a comprehensive protocol, including T(1)-weighted gradient echo, T(2)-weighted single-shot fast spin-echo, and gadolinium-enhanced T(1)-weighted gradient echo with fat suppression. Nine of the 20 patients had proved diagnoses at pathology, and included schwannoma (n = 2), ganglioneuroblastoma (n = 1), hemangioma (n = 1), metastatic breast cancer (n = 2), Pancoast tumor (n = 1), and metastatic lung cancer (n = 2). Most of the lesions had presenting symptoms, such as pain, swelling, paresthesia, and arm weakness. At MR imaging, the location and characteristics of the lesions on different types of T(1)-weighted and T(2)-weighted sequences were described with pathologic correlation.

According to the currently used nomenclature, there are only two types of hepatocellular nodular lesions: regenerative lesions and dysplastic or neoplastic lesions. Regenerative nodules include monoacinar regenerative nodules, multiacinar regenerative nodules, cirrhotic nodules, segmental or lobar hyperplasia, and focal nodular hyperplasia. Dysplastic or neoplastic nodules include hepatocellular adenoma, dysplastic foci, dysplastic nodules, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Many of these types of hepatic nodules play a role in the de novo and stepwise carcinogenesis of HCC, which comprises the following steps: regenerative nodule, low-grade dysplastic nodule, high-grade dysplastic nodule, small HCC, and large HCC. State-of-the-art magnetic resonance (MR) imaging facilitates detection and characterization in most cases of hepatic nodules. State-of-the-art MR imaging includes single-shot fast spin-echo imaging, in-phase and opposed-phase T1-weighted gradient-echo imaging, T2-weighted fast spin-echo imaging with fat saturation, and two-dimensional or three-dimensional dynamic multiphase contrast material-enhanced imaging.

In this article, MR imaging features of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are described. To better understand the MR imaging features of HCC, recent progress regarding its etiology, treatment, carcinogenesis, histology, and gross pathology will be described. Currently, T2-weighted fast spin-echo with fat saturation, and multiphasic dynamic gadolinium-enhanced two-dimensional and three-dimensional T1-weighted gradient echo imaging provides excellent results for detection and characterization of HCC.

Presence of higher breast density (BD) and persistence over time are risk factors for breast cancer. A quantitatively accurate and highly reproducible BD measure that relies on precise and reproducible whole-breast segmentation is desirable. In this study, we aimed to develop a highly reproducible and accurate whole-breast segmentation algorithm for the generation of reproducible BD measures. Three datasets of volunteers from two clinical trials were included. Breast MR images were acquired on 3 T Siemens Biograph mMR, Prisma, and Skyra using 3D Cartesian six-echo GRE sequences with a fat-water separation technique. Two whole-breast segmentation strategies, utilizing image registration and 3D U-Net, were developed. Manual segmentation was performed. A task-based analysis was performed: a previously developed MR-based BD measure, MagDensity, was calculated and assessed using automated and manual segmentation. The mean squared error (MSE) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) between MagDensity were evaluated using the manual segmentation as a reference. The test-retest reproducibility of MagDensity derived from different breast segmentation methods was assessed using the difference between the test and retest measures (Δ2-1), MSE, and ICC. The results showed that MagDensity derived by the registration and deep learning segmentation methods exhibited high concordance with manual segmentation, with ICCs of 0.986 (95%CI: 0.974-0.993) and 0.983 (95%CI: 0.961-0.992), respectively. For test-retest analysis, MagDensity derived using the registration algorithm achieved the smallest MSE of 0.370 and highest ICC of 0.993 (95%CI: 0.982-0.997) when compared to other segmentation methods. In conclusion, the proposed registration and deep learning whole-breast segmentation methods are accurate and reliable for estimating BD. Both methods outperformed a previously developed algorithm and manual segmentation in the test-retest assessment, with the registration exhibiting superior performance for highly reproducible BD measurements. Superparamagnetic iron oxide MR imaging contrast agents have been the subjects of extensive research over the past decade. The iron oxide particle size of these contrast agents varies widely, and influences their physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties, and thus clinical application. Superparamagnetic agents enhance both T1 and T2/T2* relaxation. In most situations it is their significant capacity to reduce the T2/T2* relaxation time to be utilized. The T1 relaxivity can be improved (and the T2/T2* effect can be reduced) using small particles and T1-weighted imaging sequences. Large iron oxide particles are used for bowel contrast [AMI-121 (i.e. Lumirem and Gastromark) and OMP (i.e. Abdoscan), mean diameter no less than 300 nm] and liver/spleen imaging [AMI-25 (i.e. Endorem and Feridex IV, diameter 80-150 nm); SHU 555A (i.e. Resovist, mean diameter 60 nm)]. Smaller iron oxide particles are selected for lymph node imaging [AMI-227 (i.e. Sinerem and Combidex, diameter 20-40 nm)], bone marrow imaging (AMI-227), perfusion imaging [NC100150 (i.e. Clariscan, mean diameter 20 nm)] and MR angiography (NC100150). Even smaller monocrystalline iron oxide nanoparticles are under research for receptor-directed MR imaging and magnetically labeled cell probe MR imaging. Iron oxide particles for bowel contrast are coated with insoluble material, and all iron oxide particles for intravenous injection are biodegradable.
