Two coordination polymers were hydrothermally synthesized by reaction of 3-(carboxymethoxy)benzene-1,2-dioic acid (H3L) with divalent zinc or cobalt salts in the presence of ancillary nitrogen ligand. Complex 1 features a three-dimensional metal-organic framework with (3,4,4)-connected topology. Complex 2 exhibits a 3D six-connected framework with {412.63} topology based on the [Co4(μ3-OH)2] tetranuclear clusters as nodes. The magnetic properties of complex 2 were also discussed. A new complex, [Ni(Htbip)2(btb)]n, (H2tbip = 5-tert-butylisophthalic acid; btb = 1,4-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)butane, has been synthesized by hydrothermal reaction of Ni(II) salt, H2tbip, and btb ligands. The complex was characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetry, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and powder X-ray diffraction. The complex belongs to the monoclinic system,P21/nspace group, witha= 9.687 (8) Å,b= 14.432(12) Å,c= 11.943(10) Å, andβ= 102.021(10)°. Each Ni(II) ion is linked by Htbip anions to form a 1D linear chain and further are interconnected through bridging btb ligand to yield a 2D layer. Two complexes, [Cu2(mip)2(bpa)]n (1) and [Cu2(mip)2(dpe)]n (2) [H2mip [image omitted] 5-methylisophthalic acid; bpa [image omitted] 1,2-Bis(4-pyridyl)-ethane; dpe [image omitted] 1,2-Di(4-pyridyl)-ethylene], have been prepared by hydrothermal reactions of Cu(II) salt and 5-methylisophthalic acid system with structurally similar dipyridyl ligands and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray analysis. Their X-ray crystal structures show that both of the two complexes belong to the monoclinic system, P21/n space group, [image omitted] [image omitted] 7.9615(8) Å, [image omitted] [image omitted] 15.7148(17) Å, [image omitted] [image omitted] 11.7437(12) Å, [image omitted] [image omitted] 101.8880(10)○ and [image omitted] [image omitted] 7.9000(10) Å, [image omitted] [image omitted] 15.600(2) Å, [image omitted] [image omitted] 11.8063(15) Å, [image omitted] = 100.859(2)° for 1 and 2, respectively. The two complexes have 8-membered rings resulting from dimeric Cu(II) units bridged by tridentate H2mip ligands and further form two-dimensional layered structures, which are then extended into a 2-fold interpenetrating three-dimensional network through bpa and dpe co-ligands, respectively. A three dimensional holmium(III) coordination polymer formulated as [Ho4(pydc)2(μ4-C2O4)4·8H2O]·6H2On (H2pydc = 2, 6-pyridine-dicarboxylic acid) has been synthesized via the reaction of 2,6-pyridine-dicarboxylic acid and ammonium oxalate with holmium nitrate, and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray single crystal diffraction. The complex presents 1D zigzag alternate chain array, and these 1D chains are further linked by oxalate ligand into 3D frameworks. Preliminary magnetic studies reveal the complex having weak but significant ferromagnetic couplings within the two adjacent magnetic centers bridged through oxalato, and the complex displays characteristic metal-centered fluorescence in solid state. Abstract: A new chelating radical ligand NIT-1′-MeBzIm (1) (NIT-1′-MeBzIm=2-{2′-[(l’-methyl)benzimidazolyl]}-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) and three corresponding complexes [M(NIT-1′-MeBzIm)2(NO3)(CH3OH)]·(NO3)(CH3OH) (M=Ni (2), Co (3)), [Zn(NIT-1′-MeBzIm)2(CH3OH)2]·(ClO4)2(H2O)2(CH3OH) (4) have been prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction method and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. In the crystal structures, radical 1, complexes 3 and 4 crystallize isomorphously in monoclinic, with the space groups are P2(1)/n, P2(1)/c, and P2(1), respectively. Complex 2 crystallizes in orthorhombic space group Pna2(1). The metal ions of the three complexes embed in distorted octahedron geometry centers and coordinated by two NIT-1′-MeBzIm radicals from the equatorial positions to form trans configuration, the axial positions are occupied by one methanol molecule and one nitrate anion for 2 and 3, but by two methanol molecules for 4. Magnetic measurement demonstrates that the intramolecular exchange couplings in 2 and 3 are antiferromagnetic with J =−41.25 and −38.1cm−1, where the spin Hamiltonian is defined as Ĥ =−2J(Ŝ rad1 Ŝ M + Ŝ M Ŝ rad2) based on the molecular structure of radical-metal-radical, while that in 4 is weak ferromagnetic with J =1.65cm−1 where the spin Hamiltonian is defined as Ĥ =−2JŜ 1 Ŝ 2 within the complexes. Intermolecular exchange couplings in 1 is also weak ferromagnetic with J =1.32cm−1 where the spin Hamiltonian is defined as Ĥ =−2JŜ 1 Ŝ 2 between radical and radical. Compounds 2–4 exhibit intermolecular antiferromagnetic interaction with the zJ′=−0.52cm−1, θ =−0.75K and zJ′=−0.49cm−1 for compounds 2, 3 and 4, respectively, which should ascribe to the weak interactions. The crystal structures for 1–4 have intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions (and π–π piling interactions for 1 and 3) which form the single crystals into 1-D, 2-D, 3-D structures and seems to play an important role in molecular packing and in magnetic coupling. Abstract: Using Cu(II), Mn(II) or Co(II) salt and the flexible ligands, N-[(4-carboxyphenyl)-sulfonyl]glycine (H3L1) and N-[(3-carboxyphenyl)-sulfonyl]glycine (H3L2), a series of new coordination polymers, [Mn(phen)(H2O)4][HL1] (1), [Co3(L1)2(bipy)3(H2O)6] n ·8nH2O (2), [Cu4(L1)2(OH)2(bipy)4] n ·12nH2O (3), [Na(H2L1)(H2O)] n (4), [Mn2(HL2)2(dpe)3(H2O)2] n ·ndpe (5), (phen=1,10-phenanthroline, bipy=4,4′-bipyridine, dpe=1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene), varying from 0D to 3D, have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Compound 1 has a [Mn(phen)(H2O)4]2+ cation and a HL1 2− anion. Compound 2 features a new 1D triple chain, based on octahedral cobalt atoms bridged by bipy molecules and terminally coordinated by two H3L1 ligands. Compound 3 has a 2D layered structure, constructed from new alternating chains where H3L1, hydroxyl and water molecules simultaneously act as bridging ligands. Compound 4 possesses a bilayer structure in which two adjacent layers are pillared by H3L1 ligands into a 2D bilayer network. Compound 5 is a unique 3D coordination polymer in which each Mn center binds two trans-located dpe molecules. The thermal stability as well as magnetic properties of 5 was also studied. This work and our previous work indicate that the positional isomer of the anionic N-[(carboxyphenyl)-sulfonyl]glycine is important in the construction of these network structures, which are also significantly regulated by the metal centers. Abstract: The lead(II) complex with nitronyl nitroxide, [Pb(NIT2Py)2(NO3)2] [NIT2Py=2-(2′-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide], has been prepared and characterized by magnetic and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. In the complex, the lead(II) ion is coordinated with two bidentate nitronyl nitroxide and two nitrate anions. The lead(II) ion shows seven-coordinate geometry. Magnetic susceptibility data for the title complex has been measured in the range 5–300K. There are antiferromagnetic interaction between the coordinated nitronyl nitroxides (J =−19.35cm−1) and intermolecular ferromagnetic interactions. Thus, we observe the sixth periodic IVA group metal element Pb(II) ion providing an effective pathway for the magnetic exchange interaction between nitronyl nitroxide radicals. Abstract: The reaction of N-benzesulfonyl-l-glutamic acid (Bs-glu) with Zn(CH3COO)2 ·2H2O or Co(CH3COO)2 ·4H2O in the presence of imidazole (Im) produced two novel complexes [Zn(Im)2(Bs-glu)] n (1) and [Co(Im)2(Bs-glu)] n (2). Both of the complexes exhibit similar one-dimensional structural motif and coordination environment. Bs-glu adopts the bis-monodentated coordination mode linking two adjacent metal ions. The complex 1 shows intense photoluminescence in the solid state. Magnetic measurements for 2 show that the exchange interaction of the two Co(II) ions is antiferromagnetic. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A novel Mn(II)-nitronyl nitroxide-substituted thiazole complex Mn2(NIT2-thz)2Cl4(H2O)2 (NIT2-thz=2-(2′-thiazole)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) was synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca. The complex has dimeric structure where two manganese ions are doubly bridged by chloride ions. Each manganese ion is in a distorted octahedral environment. The complex molecules were connected as two-dimensional ladder-type structure by the intermolecular interaction. A novel one-dimensional nickel(II) complex incorporating a nitroxide radical with the formula {[Ni(NITpPy)2(TCB)(H2O)2]·2H2O}n (NITpPy=2-(4′-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide and TCB=1,4-dicarboxy-2,5-dicarboxylatobenzene dianion) has been synthesized and characterized. Abstract: A new family of five lanthanide-organic coordination polymers incorporating multi-functional N-hetrocyclic dicarboxylate ligand, namely, [Ln 2(Hdpp)2(dpp)2] n Ln=Pr(1), Eu(2), Gd(3), Dy(4), Er(5) (H2dpp=1-(3, 4-dicarboxyphenyl) pyridin-4-ol) have been fabricated successfully through solvothermal reaction of 1-(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)-4-hydroxypyridin-1-ium chloride with trivalent lanthanide salts, and have been characterized systematically. The complexes 1–5 are isomorphous and isostructural. They all feature three dimensional (3D) frameworks based on the interconnection of 1D double chains composed of the binuclear moiety [Ln 2(Hdpp)2]4+ basic carboxylate as secondary building unit (SBU). The results of magnetic analysis shows the same bridging fashion of carboxylic group in this case results in the different magnetic properties occurring within lanthanide polymers. Abstract: The reactions in mixtures of water–ethanol between lanthanide salts and nitrogen N-hetrocyclic carboxylic acid, in the presence of ammonium oxalate, result in two interesting lanthanide–organic coordination polymers, formulated as, {[Sm4(Hmimda)4(μ4-C2O4)2·6H2O]·8H2O} i (1), [Eu4(Hmimda)4(μ4-C2O4)2·6H2O]·4H2O} n (2), (H3mimda=1H-2-methyl-4, 5-imidazole-dicarboxylic acid). The polymers 1 and 2 are isostructural, and are both built from zig-zag 1D chains constructed from Ln-Hmimda moieties bridged by oxalate, as the secondary building unit (SBU). The Hmimda ligand further is interconnected the 1D chains to form the 3D framework. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that the μ4-k 4 O bridging fashion of oxalate results in the possible antiferromagnetic interactions occurring between the adjacent lanthanide(III) centers. Abstract: The mild hydrothermal reaction of Cd, Zn, or Cu(II) acetate salts with the deprotonated flexible linker homophthalic acid (H2hmph) and the rigid molecule 4,4′-bipyridine (bpy) produced the following complexes, featured structurally by the assembly of various metal carboxylate subunits cohered further by the bpy ancillary ligand: {[Cd2(hmph)2(bpy)(H2O)2]·H2O} n (1) manifests cadmium carboxylate zigzag chain motifs, containing the alternation of a hmph-bridged Cd2(hmph)2 dimer and an edge-shared Cd2N4O10 dimer, connected further by the bpy ligands to form a layered structure with a large 50-membered ring; [Zn(hmph)(bpy)] n (2) processes hmph-bridged Cd2(hmph)2 dimer motifs inter-linked further by the bpy ligands to generate mutually embedded layered structures with square (4,4) grids; and {[Cu(hmph)(bpy)]·H2O} n (3) consists of copper carboxylate helix motifs, featuring hmph-bridged CuN2O4 octahedra cross-linked further by the bpy ligands into a twofold-interpenetrating 3D chiral framework with a homochiral topology of a quartz dual net. This well-defined synthetic system was proposed to highlight the fact that organic linkers display markedly different coordination preferences at specific metal ions. In addition, the fluorescence properties of complexes 1 and 2 were rationalized in terms of the local ligand environments in the crystal structures, and magnetic properties of complex 3 are also given. Abstract: The novel tetranuclear nickel(II) carboxylate complex formulated as [Ni4(L)2(m2-OAc)2 (m3-OAc)2]·CH3OH·H2O, (1) (where L = 2-oxo-1,2-di(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl picolinate) has been synthesized and characterized systematically. The complex crystallizes in orthorhombic system, consisting of a tetranuclear Ni(II) distorted cubane-like core, in which four Ni(II) ions are bridged by four acetato groups. Each Ni(II) ion is further ligated with nitrogen atoms of bridging pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde derivative, forming either Ni, N, N, O- or Ni, N, O-chelate macro-rings. Magnetic susceptibility studies indicate that the weak antiferromagnetic interaction is operating between the adjacent nickel ions bridged via the carboxylate oxygen atoms within the complex. Abstract: Three new complexes [Cu2(mip)2(bbi)] n (1), {[Cu2(tbip)2(bbi)2(H2O)]·2H2O} n (2) and {[Co2(tbip)2(bbi)2]·2H2O} n (3), were prepared through hydrothermal reactions of Cu(II) and Co(II) acetate with H2mip or H2tbip (H2mip=5-methyl isophthalic acid and H2tbip=5-tert-butyl isophthalic acid) and the flexible ligand bbi (bbi=1,1′-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole)). All these complexes were structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Complex 1 exhibits a 3D network, which are constructed from 2D carboxylate layer and bbi pillar. Complex 2 possesses a 2D layer structure, and exists extensive hydrogen-bonding interactions, while complex 3 is constructed from 2D layers which consists of alternating left- and right-handed helical chains, and further assembled to form a 3D framework by hydrogen-bonding interactions. Abstract: Two new three-dimensional complexes formulated as [Na2M(ADA)2(H2O)4]n (M=Ni(1), Co(2); ADA= N-(carbamoylmethyl)iminodiacetato dianion) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG analysis and X-ray diffraction. Abstract: To explore the possibility of obtaining the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) bearing the bsgluH2 ligand, two new Cd(II) and one Cu(II) coordination polymers, [Cd(bsglu)(bipy)] n (1), [Cd(bsglu)·(H2O)] n (2) and {[Cu2(bsglu)2(bipy)2]·4H2O} n (3) (bsglu=N-benzesulfonyl-glutamic acid bianion, bipy=2,2′-bipyridine) were synthesized and characterized by IR, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis. Compounds 1 and 3 exhibit one-dimensional coordination chains, which are further connected to form two-dimensional supramolecular networks through π–π aromatic stacking interactions in a novel zipper-like way. Compound 2 presents a two-dimensional layer structure. To the best of our knowledge, 2 is the first two-dimensional complex formed from transition metal and bsgluH2 ligand. Interestingly, the bsglu anion exhibits remarkable versatile coordination modes in these complexes. Fluorescent analyses show that 1 exhibits photoluminescence in the solid state. Abstract: A novel nickel(II) complex, Ni(NIT2-thz)2(NO3)2 (NIT2-thz=2-(2′-thiazole)-4,4,5,5-tetrmethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3oxide) was synthesized, the crystal structure and magnetic properties were mainly discussed in the present work. In the title compound, each nickel(II) ion is chelated by two NIT2-thz ligands through oxygen atoms of nitroxide group and nitrogen atoms of thiazole group forming two six-membered rings at equatorial positions, together with the coordination of two oxygen atoms from two nitrate anions at axial positions, which formed a elongated octahedral geometry. By the intermolecular interactions, the molecules were connected as a 2D network. Magnetic measurements show that there are moderate ferromagnetic interactions between the Ni(II) ions and the radicals (J=43.47cm−1). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Three oxamido-bridged binuclear M(II)Cu(II) complexes of formulas [Cu(L)Cu(phen)(H2O)](ClO4)2 (1), [Cu(L)Ni(phen)2](ClO4)2·2H2O (2), and [Cu(L)Mn(bpy)2](ClO4)2 (3) have been synthesized, and structurally and magnetically characterized, where L=1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotradecanne-2,3-dione, phen=1,10-phenanthroline and bpy=2,2′-bipyridine. In the three complexes, the copper atom from the macrocyclic oxamido–copper(II) precursor in a square-planar or axially elongated octahedral environment and the nickel and manganese atoms from 2 and 3 in a distorted octahedral environment are bridged by the oxamidate groups, with Cu⋯Ni and Cu⋯Mn separations of 5.281 and 5.418 A˚, respectively, while the other copper atom from 1 in square pyramidal coordination geometry, with Cu⋯Cu separation of 5.152 A˚. The metal–metal separations are consistent with the sequence of decrease of the ion radius of the metal ion. The magnetic properties of all three complexes have been investigated. The χMT versus T plots for 1–3 are typical of antiferromagnetically coupled M(II)&z.sbnd;Cu(II) pairs (M=Cu, Ni and Mn). Four new coordination polymers {[Ni(4-Nbdc)(bpa)(H 2 O)]} n ( 1 ), {[Co(4-Nbdc)(bpp) (H 2 O)]} n ( 2 ), {[Ni(4-Nbdc)(bpp)(H 2 O)]·H 2 O} n ( 3 ), and {[Mn 2 (3-Nbdc) 2 (bib) 3 ]·2H 2 O} n ( 4 ) (4-Nbdc=4-nitrobenzene-1,2-dicarboxylate, 3-Nbdc=3-nitrobenzene-1,2-dicarboxylate, bpa=1,2-bi(4-pyridyl)ethane, bpp=1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane, and bib=1,4-bis(1-imidazoly)benzene), were synthesized by hydrothermal reactions, and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffractions, elemental analysis, FT-IR, PXRD, TGA and magnetic analysis. Complexes 1 and 2 display quasi-trapezoidal chain and brick-wall layer, and both of them contain metal–carboxylate binuclear units. Complexes 3 and 4 exhibit three-dimensional frameworks with the (6 6 ) dia topology and (4 4 .6 10 .8)(4 4 .6 2 ) fsc topology, and both of them contain metal–carboxylate chains. The carboxyl groups with syn-anti coordination mode mediate effectively the weak ferromagnetic coupling interaction within Ni(II)–carboxylate binuclear in 1 ( J =1.27 cm −1 ) and Ni(II)–carboxylate chain in 3 ( J =1.44 cm −1 ), respectively, and the carboxyl groups with anti-anti coordination mode leads to the classic antiferromagnetic coupling interaction within Mn(II)–carboxylate chain in 4 ( J =−0.77 cm −1 ). Two coordination polymers, {[Cu2(tbip)2(bie)]∙6H2O} n (1) and {[Cu2(tbip)2(bmib)(H2O)]} n (2) (H2tbip=5-tert-butyl isophthalate, bie=1,2-bis(imidazol-1-yl)ethane, bmib=1,4-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)butane) have been synthesized by hydrothermal methods. Complex 1 is constructed from [Cu2(tbip)2] n layers and further pillared by bie into a 3D (4,6)-connected (42·52·62)(42·56·64·73) network. Complex 2 exhibits a 2-fold interpenetrating 3D pcu framework. Abstract: A 3D MOF {[Ni(H2O)6][Ni4L2(μ3-OH)2(H2O)2]}n (1) with a (4,8)-connected flu net is constructed by a butterfly-like tetranuclear [Ni4(μ3-OH)2(COO)8]2− anionic cluster and organic linker 2,3′,5,5′-biphenyl tetracarboxylic acid (H4L). The disordered [Ni(H2O)6]2+ cations fill in the free voids of anionic framework in 1. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that complex 1 shows weak antiferromagnetic interactions. A non-coplanar dicarboxylate ndca (H2ndca=5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid), combining with various dipyridyl-typed tectons, constructs six Cd(II)/Co(II) coordination polymers under hydrothermal conditions, namely [Co(ndca)(H2O)] n (1), {[Co(ndca)(bpe)(H2O)]·H2O} n (2), [Co(ndca)(bpa)0.5(H2O)] n (3), [Cd(ndca)(bpe)(H2O)] n (4), {[Cd(ndca)(bpa)(H2O)]·0.5H2O} n (5), and {[Cd(ndca)(bpp) (H2O)]·H2O} n (6) (bpe=1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene, bpa=1,2-bi(4-pyridyl)ethane, and bpp=1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane). All these compounds contain various metal(II)–carboxylate motifs, including carboxylate binuclear (2, 4, 5), carboxylate chain (1, 6) and carboxylate layer (3), which are further extended by dipyridyl-typed coligands to afford a vast diversity of the structures with 2D pyknotic layers (1, 6), 2D open layer (5), 2D→3D interpenetrated networks (2,4), and 3D pillared-layer framework (3), respectively. Abstract: Two new 3-D coordination polymers bearing linear trinuclear secondary building blocks with mixed bridging ligands, {[Ni3(tbip)2(Htbip)2(bib)2]·4H2O} n (1) and {[Co3(tbip)2(Htbip)2(btb)2]·4H2O} n (2) (H2tbip=5-tert-butyl isophthalic acid, bib=1,4-bis(imidazol-1-yl)butane, btb=1,4-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)butane), were obtained and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, single-crystal X-ray crystallography and powder X-ray diffraction. Both complexes 1 and 2 display similar 3D 6-connected pcu networks containing the linear trinuclear [M3(COO)6] (M=Ni and Co) clusters as nodes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Two new manganese(II) coordination polymers, [Mn2(bpe)2(4-Brip)2]n (1) and {[Mn3(H2O)2(H-bpp)2(5-Brip)4]·H2O}n (2), were prepared through hydrothermal reactions of Mn(II) acetate with H2-4-Brip or H2-5-Brip (H2-4/5-Brip=4/5-bromoisopthaliac acid) and the bipyridyl-type co-ligands bpe or bpp (bpe=1,2-bi(4-pyridyl)ethane and bpp=1,3-bi(4-pyridyl)propane). The two complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Complex 1 has a complicated (3,5)-connected 3D 3-fold interpenetrating network with a Schläfli symbol of (42.65.83)(42.6), constructed of the ribbon-like chains having dimeric [Mn(COO)]2 units bridged by 4-Brip. Complex 2 contains isophthalato-bridged trimanganese clusters as building units, which are linked by 5-Brip anions to form a 1D ladder-like chain with unidentate coordinated H-bpp decorated as pendants. And the chains are further linked by N∙∙O and O∙∙O hydrogen bonding to generate a 2D interlocked architecture. Dominant antiferromagnetic couplings were observed in complexes 1 and 2. Abstract: A novel 3d–4f heterometallic coordination polymer, namely, {[Sm2(PBDA)2·2H2O][Zn2(PBDA)2(Cl)2]}n (1), (H2PBDA=3 -(pyridin-3-yl-oxy) benzene −1,2-dicarboxylic acid) has been hydrothermally synthesized by using samarium(III) nitrate, H2PBDA acid and zinc chloride as raw materials, and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, TG analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Polymer 1 possesses two-dimensional (2D) network containing the original 1D heterometallic chain composed of [Sm2Zn2(PBDA)2] moieties. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility studies reveal that 1 displays possible weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the neighboring Sm(III) ions, and the photoluminescent properties of polymer 1 as well as free H2PBDA ligand were also investigated. In this work, we present two new coordination polymers, [Co 3 (iBuOIPA) 3 (bps)(H 2 O)] n (1) and [Co 2 (iPrIPA) 2 (bps)] n (2) (bps ​= ​4,4′-bipyridyl sulfide, iBuOIPA ​= ​5-i-butoxyisophthalate, iPrIPA ​= ​5-i-propoxyisophthalate), by the hydrothermal reactions of Co(OAc) 2 4H 2 O and 4,4′-bipyridyl disulfide (bpds) with iBuOIPA or iPrIPA, respectively. Both crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and further characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra and TG analyses. Interestingly, for 1 and 2 , the starting bpds ligands were wholly transformed into bps. Polymer 1 displays a 3D network constructed from binuclear cobalt nodes while polymer 2 features a 2D infinite layer consisting of cobalt dimers. These results demonstrate that the existence of electron-donating groups in isophthalate derivatives plays a significant role during the self-assembly of polymers. Moreover, both 1 and 2 exhibit remarkable magnetic properties, which were investigated and discussed in detail, showing a good prospect in magnetic and energy storage devices.
