Hybrid excited synchronous machines (HESMs) combine permanent-magnet (PM) excitation and wound field (WF) excitation. The goal of hybrid excitation is to combine the advantages of PM excited machines and WF synchronous machines. HESM have been identified as one of the emerging technologies for modern energy conversion systems. They have been the subject of many review articles. The principle of hybrid excitation allows solving many drawbacks related to PM electric machines operation: flux weakening, energy efficiency, and PMs price fluctuation. It helps to introduce an additional degree of freedom in the design of synchronous machines, and allows therefore an easier adaptation of PM synchronous machines to a wider applications scope. To this additional degree corresponds the possibility of adjusting the contribution of the two magnetic field sources: PM and WF. The use of this technology for electric traction has been the subject of many scientific and technical contributions. In this contribution, the emphasis will be put on the use of these machines as generators in transportation applications and renewable energy applications. The design and operation of three particular structures will be presented. Two of them have been designed as generators for transportation applications, and the third one has been designed as generator for renewable energy conversion. The aim of this paper is, first, to extend the application of the hybrid analytical modeling (HAM) approach for the analysis of tubular linear machines (TLPM), something that has never been reported yet in the scientific literature. The HAM consists of a strong coupling between the reluctance network and the Fourier series solution of magnetic scalar potential. In order to assess the merits and capabilities of the HAM, it is applied to the study of the cogging force in linear machines and compared with finite element analyses (FEA). The cogging force is a global quantity, which is very sensitive to magnetic field computation accuracy and constitutes, therefore, a good measure of the accuracy of the HAM as compared with FEA. The HAM should require less computation time as compared with FEA, and is then more suitable for predesign stage. Three different structures are analyzed: a flat linear machine, a TLPM with internal mobile armature, and, finally, a TLPM with external mobile armature. The aim of this paper is to highlight the capabilities of a new hybrid analytical modeling (HAM) approach for the analysis and design of various electromagnetic structures. After an introduction, where the aim of the development of this modeling approach is presented, the modeling approach is described. The new HAM is based on a strong coupling of the magnetic equivalent circuits method and analytical models (AMs). The AM, based on the formal solution of Maxwell’s equations, is established thanks to the separation of variables method. The HAM is applied to different permanent magnet electric machine structures, and the results are validated extensively by comparison with the finite-element analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an exact 2-D analytical model for predicting the magnetic field in idealized structures of surface mounted permanent-magnet tubular linear machines that account for the stator slotting effect. The open-circuit and armature reaction magnetic field distributions are analytically derived and compared to finite-element analyses. The on-load magnetic field calculation is based on the superposition of the component fields due to permanent magnets and armature field reaction.
