We consider the effect of a subadiabatic layer at the base of the convection zone on convection itself and the associated large-scale dynamos in spherical wedge geometry. We use a heat conduction prescription based on the Kramers opacity law which allows the depth of the convection zone to dynamically adapt to changes in the physical characteristics such as rotation rate and magnetic fields. We find that the convective heat transport is strongly concentrated towards the equatorial and polar regions in the cases without a substantial radiative layer below the convection zone. The presence of a stable layer below the convection zone significantly reduces the anisotropy of radial enthalpy transport. Furthermore, the dynamo solutions are sensitive to subtle changes in the convection zone structure. We find that the kinetic helicity changes sign in the deeper parts of the convection zone at high latitudes in all runs. The debate on the role of Euler potentials (EP), α∇β, in the dynamo theory is a long-standing one. It is known that the cross-product of gradients of two the potentials may represent magnetic fields lines. However, 2D and 3D dynamo hydromagnetic simulations suggest that their utility as analogues of magnetic field potential is restricted. This raises questions about their utility in the broader context of magneto-genesis and dynamo theories. We reexamine this and find that a reinterpretation of such potentials offers a new insight into the role EP may play in the general evolution of magnetic fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is dedicated to the description of kinematic dynamo action in a sphere and its analytical treatment with the BULLARD-GELLMAN formalism. One goal of dynamo theory is to answer the question: Can magnetic fields of stellar objects be generated or sustained due to (fluid) motion in the interior? BULLARD and GELLMAN were among the first to study this question, leading the way for many subsequent studies, cf. Bullard (Philos Trans R Soc A 247(928):213-278, 1954). In their publication the differential equations resulting from a toroidal-poloidal decomposition of the velocity and magnetic field are stated without an in-depth discussion of the employed methods and computation steps. This study derives the necessary formalism in a compact and concise manner by using an operator-based approach. The focus lies on the mathematical steps and necessary properties of the considered formalism. Prior to that a derivation of the induction equation is presented based on rational continuum electrodynamics. As an example of the formalism the decay of two magnetic fields is analyzed. We present an investigation of dynamo in a simultaneous dependence on the non-uniform stratification, electrical conductivity of the inner core and the Prandtl number. Computations are performed using the MAG dynamo code. In all the investigated cases, the generated magnetic fields are dipolar. Our results show that the dynamos, especially magnetic field structures, are independent in our investigated cases on the electrical conductivity of the inner core. This is in agreement with results obtained in previous analyses. The influence of non-uniform stratification is for our parameters weak, which is understandable because most of the shell is unstably stratified, and the stably stratified region is only a thin layer near the CMB. The teleconvection is not observed in our study. However, the influence of the Prandtl number is strong. The generated magnetic fields do not become weak in the polar regions because the magnetic field inside the tangent cylinder is always regenerated due to the weak magnetic diffusion. A weak turbulence theory is derived for magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) under rapid rotation and in the presence of a uniform large-scale magnetic field which is associated with a constant Alfvén velocity $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}{\boldsymbol {b}}_{{0}}$. The angular velocity ${\boldsymbol{\Omega}}_{{0}}$ is assumed to be uniform and parallel to ${\boldsymbol {b}}_{{0}}$. Such a system exhibits left and right circularly polarized waves which can be obtained by introducing the magneto-inertial length $d \equiv b_0/\varOmega _0$. In the large-scale limit ($kd \to 0$, with $k$ being the wavenumber) the left- and right-handed waves tend to the inertial and magnetostrophic waves, respectively, whereas in the small-scale limit ($kd \to + \infty $) pure Alfvén waves are recovered. By using a complex helicity decomposition, the asymptotic weak turbulence equations are derived which describe the long-time behaviour of weakly dispersive interacting waves via three-wave interaction processes. It is shown that the nonlinear dynamics is mainly anisotropic, with a stronger transfer perpendicular than parallel to the rotation axis. The general theory may converge to pure weak inertial/magnetostrophic or Alfvén wave turbulence when the large- or small-scale limits are taken, respectively. Inertial wave turbulence is asymptotically dominated by the kinetic energy/helicity, whereas the magnetostrophic wave turbulence is dominated by the magnetic energy/helicity. For both regimes, families of exact solutions are found for the spectra, which do not correspond necessarily to a maximal helicity state. It is shown that the hybrid helicity exhibits a cascade whose direction may vary according to the scale $k_f$ at which the helicity flux is injected, with an inverse cascade if $k_fd < 1$ and a direct cascade otherwise. The theory is relevant to the magnetostrophic dynamo, whose main applications are the Earth and the giant planets, such as Jupiter and Saturn, for which a small (${\sim }10^{-6}$) Rossby number is expected. The axisymmetric kinematic dynamo problem is reconsidered, and a number of open questions are answered. Apart from axisymmetry and smoothness of data and solution we deal with this problem under quite general conditions; i.e., we assume a compressible fluid of variable (in space and time) conductivity moving in an arbitrary (axisymmetric) domain. We prove unconditional, pointwise, and exponential decay of the magnetic field and electric current to zero. The decay rate of the external (meridional) magnetic field can become very small (compared to free decay) for special flow fields and large magnetic Reynolds numbers, as we demonstrate with an example. On the other hand, we show for fluids with weak variation of mass density and conductivity that the meridional and azimuthal decay rates do not drop significantly below those of free decay. Context. Based on the rapidly increasing all-sky data of Faraday rotation measures and polarised synchrotron radiation, the Milky Way's magnetic field can now be modelled with an unprecedented level of detail and complexity. Aims. We aim to complement this phenomenological approach with a physically motivated, quantitative dynamo model - a model that moreover allows for the evolution of the system as a whole, instead of just solving the induction equation for a fixed static disc. Methods. Building on the framework of mean-field magnetohydrodynamics and extending it to the realm of a hybrid evolution, we performed three-dimensional global simulations of the Galactic disc. To eliminate free parameters, closure coefficients embodying the mean-field dynamo were calibrated against resolved local simulations of supernova-driven interstellar turbulence. Results. The emerging dynamo solutions comprise a mixture of the dominant axisymmetric S0 mode with even parity, and a subdominant A0 mode with odd parity. Notably, this superposition of modes creates a strong localised vertical field on one side of the Galactic disc. Moreover, we found significant radial pitch angles that decay with radius, which can be explained by flaring of the disc. In accordance with previous work, magnetic instabilities appear to be restricted to the calmer outer Galactic disc. Their main effect is to create strong fields at large radii such that the radial scale length of the magnetic field increases from 4 kpc (for a mean-field dynamo alone) to about 10 kpc in the hybrid models - the latter being in much better agreement with observations. There remain aspects (e.g., spiral arms, X-shaped halo fields, fluctuating fields) that are not captured by the current model and that will require further development towards a fully dynamical evolution. We consider an unforced, incompressible, turbulent magnetofluid constrained by concentric inner and outer spherical surfaces. We define a model system in which normal components of the velocity, magnetic field, vorticity, and electric current are zero on the boundaries. This choice allows us to find a set of Galerkin expansion functions that are common to both velocity and magnetic field, as well as vorticity and current. The model dynamical system represents magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in a spherical domain and is analyzed by the methods similar to those applied to homogeneous MHD turbulence. We find a statistical theory of ideal (i.e. no dissipation) MHD turbulence analogous to that found in the homogeneous case, including the prediction of coherent structure in the form of a large-scale quasistationary magnetic field. This MHD dynamo depends on broken ergodicity, an effect that is enhanced when total magnetic helicity is increased relative to total energy. When dissipation is added and large scales are only weakly damped, quasiequilibrium may occur for long periods of time, so that the ideal theory is still pertinent on a global scale. Over longer periods of time, the selective decay of energy over magnetic helicity further enhances the effects of broken ergodicity. We construct a series of kinematic axisymmetric mean-field dynamo models operating in the αΩ, α²Ω and α² regimes, all using the full α-tensor extracted from a global magnetohydrodynamical simulation of solar convection producing large-scale magnetic fields undergoing solar-like cyclic polarity reversals. We also include an internal differential rotation profile produced in a purely hydrodynamical parent simulation of solar convection, and a simple meridional flow profile described by a single cell per meridional quadrant. An α²Ω mean-field model, presumably closest to the mode of dynamo action characterizing the MHD simulation, produces a spatiotemporal evolution of magnetic fields that share some striking similarities with the zonally-averaged toroidal component extracted from the simulation. Comparison with α² and αΩ mean-field models operating in the same parameter regimes indicates that much of the complexity observed in the spatiotemporal evolution of the large-scale magnetic field in the simulation can be traced to the turbulent electromotive force. Oscillating α²solutions are readily produced, and show some similarities with the observed solar cycle, including a deep-seated toroidal component concentrated at low latitudes and migrating equatorward in the course of the solar cycle. Various numerical experiments performed using the mean-field models reveal that turbulent pumping plays an important role in setting the global characteristics of the magnetic cycles. We have constructed a dynamo model for the magnetic field in spiral galaxies that takes into account the differences in star formation rates in different galaxies. The difficulty in constructing the model is that the star formation rate does not enter directly into the equations of magnetohydrodynamics, which include only the root-mean-square velocity of the interstellar gas, its density, and the half-thickness of the ionized gas disk. We propose a parametrization of these quantities that relates them to the star formation rate and investigate our model in terms of the so-called no- z approximation, which neglects the details of the magnetic field structure in a direction perpendicular to the galactic disk. The influence of the star formation rate on the galactic dynamo is a threshold one. This influence is small at moderate star formation rates and significant only at very high star formation rates. If the starburst intensity reaches some critical level (exceeding that in the Milky Way by an order of magnitude), then the large-scale magnetic field is destroyed and it is restored only after completion of the starburst. A quasi-linear theory is presented for how randomly forced, barotropic velocity fluctuations cause an exponentially growing, large-scale (mean) magnetic dynamo in the presence of a uniform parallel shear flow. It is a ‘kinematic’ theory for the growth of the mean magnetic energy from a small initial seed, neglecting the saturation effects of the Lorentz force. The quasi-linear approximation is most broadly justifiable by its correspondence with computational solutions of nonlinear magnetohydrodynamics, and it is rigorously derived in the limit of small magnetic Reynolds number, ${\mathit{Re}}_{\eta } \ll 1$. Dynamo action occurs even without mean helicity in the forcing or flow, but random helicity variance is then essential. In a sufficiently large domain and with a small seed wavenumber in the direction perpendicular to the mean shearing plane, a positive exponential growth rate $\gamma $ can occur for arbitrary values of ${\mathit{Re}}_{\eta } $, viscous Reynolds number ${\mathit{Re}}_{\nu } $, and random-force correlation time ${t}_{f} $ and orientation angle ${\theta }_{f} $ in the shearing plane. The value of $\gamma $ is independent of the domain size. The shear dynamo is ‘fast’, with finite $\gamma \gt 0$ in the limit of ${\mathit{Re}}_{\eta } \gg 1$. Averaged over random realizations of the forcing history, the ensemble-mean magnetic field grows more slowly, if at all, compared to the r.m.s. field (magnetic energy). In the limit of small ${\mathit{Re}}_{\eta } $ and ${\mathit{Re}}_{\nu } $, the dynamo behaviour is related to the well-known alpha–omega ansatz when the force is slowly varying ($\gamma {t}_{f} \gg 1$) and to the ‘incoherent’ alpha–omega ansatz when the force is more rapidly fluctuating. The steady two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stagnation-point flow of an electrically conducting incompressible viscous fluid toward a shrinking sheet is investigated. The sheet is shrunk in its own plane with a velocity proportional to the distance from the stagnation-point and a uniform magnetic field is applied normal to the sheet. Velocity component parallel to the sheet is found to increase with an increase in the magnetic field parameter M. A region of reverse flow occurs near the surface of the shrinking sheet. It is shown that as M increases, the tendency of this flow reversal decreases. It is also observed that the nonalignment of the stagnation-point flow and the shrinking sheet considerably complicates the flow structure. The effect of the magnetic parameter M on the streamlines is shown for both aligned and nonaligned cases. The temperature distribution in the boundary layer is found when the surface is held at constant temperature. The analysis reveals that the temperature at a point increases with increasing M in a certain neighborhood of the surface but beyond this, the temperature decreases with increasing M. Recent numerical and analytical work has identified a possible new source of mean-field dynamo action, caused by fluctuations in the α-effect interacting with a large-scale shear. This process gives rise to a new source term in the averaged induction equation. Essentially the same term arises from the shear-current effect. This paper investigates the consequences of the new term in a two-dimensional solar dynamo model, in spherical geometry, with a realistic large-scale shear. In general, it is found that the new source term leads to an increase in the dynamo cycle period, although the details of this depend crucially upon the spatial variation of the fluctuations in the α-effect (or the shear-current term). We study large-scale kinematic dynamo action due to turbulence in the presence of a linear shear flow in the low-conductivity limit. Our treatment is non-perturbative in the shear strength and makes systematic use of both the shearing coordinate transformation and the Galilean invariance of the linear shear flow. The velocity fluctuations are assumed to have low magnetic Reynolds number (Rem), but could have arbitrary fluid Reynolds number. The equation for the magnetic fluctuations is expanded perturbatively in the small quantity, Rem. Our principal results are as follows: (i) the magnetic fluctuations are determined to the lowest order in Rem by explicit calculation of the resistive Green's function for the linear shear flow; (ii) the mean electromotive force is then calculated and an integro-differential equation is derived for the time evolution of the mean magnetic field. In this equation, velocity fluctuations contribute to two different kinds of terms, the ‘C’ and ‘D’ terms, respectively, in which first and second spatial derivatives of the mean magnetic field, respectively, appear inside the space–time integrals; (iii) the contribution of the D term is such that its contribution to the time evolution of the cross-shear components of the mean field does not depend on any other components except itself. Therefore, to the lowest order in Rem, but to all orders in the shear strength, the D term cannot give rise to a shear-current-assisted dynamo effect; (iv) casting the integro-differential equation in Fourier space, we show that the normal modes of the theory are a set of shearing waves, labelled by their sheared wavevectors; (v) the integral kernels are expressed in terms of the velocity-spectrum tensor, which is the fundamental dynamical quantity that needs to be specified to complete the integro-differential equation description of the time evolution of the mean magnetic field; (vi) the C term couples different components of the mean magnetic field, so they can, in principle, give rise to a shear-current-type effect. We discuss the application to a slowly varying magnetic field, where it can be shown that forced non-helical velocity dynamics at low fluid Reynolds number does not result in a shear-current-assisted dynamo effect. Experimental results are reported on the magnetohydrodynamic interaction between oscillating flows in adjoining channels of the Karlsruhe dynamo test facility. In the experiment, designed to simulate the Roberts–Busse kinematic dynamo model, a time periodic perturbation has been imposed on the axial channel flows, while the flow rates in the other two helical channel systems were supplied at constant power level. It has been observed that the onset of dynamo action is shifted slightly to lower mean flow rates. A temporal analysis shows distinct correlations between the evolving magnetic field and the different kinds of forced flows in the channels. From the beginning the environmental magnetic field adjusts to fluctuations of the axial channel flow. The fluctuations of the magnetic field increase owing to dynamo action in a transition range and induce quasiperiodic fluctuations on the flow in the helical channels by acting Lorentz forces. Gravitational instabilities in a magnetized Friedman–Robertson–Walker (FRW) universe, in which the magnetic field was assumed to be too weak to destroy the isotropy of the model, are known and have been studied in the past. Accordingly, it became evident that the external magnetic field disfavors the perturbations' growth, suppressing the corresponding rate by an amount proportional to its strength. However, the spatial isotropy of the FRW universe is not compatible with the presence of large-scale magnetic fields. Therefore, in this paper we use the general-relativistic version of the (linearized) perturbed magnetohydrodynamic equations with and without resistivity, to discuss a generalized Jeans criterion and the potential formation of density condensations within a class of homogeneous and anisotropically expanding, self-gravitating, magnetized fluids in curved space–time. We find that, for a wide variety of anisotropic cosmological models, gravitomagnetic instabilities can lead to subhorizontal, magnetized condensations. In the nonresistive case, the power spectrum of the unstable cosmological perturbations suggests that most of the power is concentrated on large scales (small k), very close to the horizon. On the other hand, in a resistive medium, the critical wave-numbers so obtained, exhibit a delicate dependence on resistivity, resulting in the reduction of the corresponding Jeans lengths to smaller scales (well bellow the horizon) than the nonresistive ones, while increasing the range of cosmological models which admit such an instability. Abstract: The conventional magnetic induction equation that governs hydromagnetic dynamo action is transformed into an equivalent integral equation system. An advantage of this approach is that the computational domain is restricted to the region occupied by the electrically conducting fluid and to its boundary. This integral equation approach is first employed to simulate kinematic dynamos excited by Beltrami-like flows in a finite cylinder. The impact of externally added layers around the cylinder on the onset of dynamo actions is investigated. Then it is applied to simulate dynamo experiments within cylindrical geometry including the “von Kármán sodium” (VKS) experiment and the Riga dynamo experiment. A modified version of this approach is utilized to investigate magnetic induction effects under the influence of externally applied magnetic fields which is also important to measure the proximity of a given dynamo facility to the self-excitation threshold. The excitation of cosmological perturbations in an anisotropic cosmological model and in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field has been studied, using the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations. In this case, the system of partial differential equations which governs the evolution of the magnetized cosmological perturbations can be solved analytically. Our results verify that fast-magnetosonic modes propagating normal to the magnetic field, are excited. But, what is most important, is that, at late times, the magnetic-induction contrast(δB/B) grows, resulting in the enhancement of the ambient magnetic field. The existence of a dynamo effect in a simplified magnetohydrodynamic model of turbulence is considered when the magnetic Prandtl number approaches zero or infinity. The magnetic field is interacting with an incompressible Kraichnan-Kazantsev model velocity field which incorporates also a viscous cutoff scale. An approximate system of equations in the different scaling ranges can be formulated and solved, so that the solution tends to the exact one when the viscous and magnetic-diffusive cutoffs approach zero. In this approximation we are able to determine analytically the conditions for the existence of a dynamo effect and give an estimate of the dynamo growth rate. Among other things we show that in the large magnetic Prandtl number case the dynamo effect is always present. We address mathematical issues raised by the so-called α effect of dynamo theory, which is a dynamo mechanism arising in conducting flows with small scale fluctuations. Analytical results on the α effect concern the linear induction equation, and are usually claimed to hold for the whole magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) system, as long as the amplitude of the perturbations is small. We discuss the justification of that claim, in the case of periodic fluctuations of the fields. We show a nonlinear instability result on the MHD system, that predicts dynamo action for a large class of high frequency periodic flows, up to the fully nonlinear regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We review the results obtained by three successful fluid dynamo experiments and discuss what has been learnt from them about the effect of turbulence on the dynamo threshold and saturation. The article presents evidence that non-radial flows, i.e. flows v with v · r≡ 0, in a fluid of radially symmetric conductivity contained in a spherical volume BR of radius R are not capable of magnetic field generation. More precisely, it is proved that the L1-norm [image omitted] of the poloidal scalar P(r, t) of the magnetic field is bounded for all times by its initial value in the L2-norm. Moreover, the L1-norm of P over an arbitrary sphere Sr with radius r decays (in time) to zero uniformly with respect to r. In the case that the poloidal field has died out, we prove, furthermore, decay to zero of the toroidal scalar T in the norm [image omitted] uniformly with respect to r. We test the quality of a new core flow imaging method that incorporates constraints on flow helicity, using synthetic magnetic secular variation data from 3-D self-consistent numerical dynamo models. Comparison with the dynamo model flows reveals that our imaging method delineates most of the main large-scale flow features, both in pattern and magnitude. The dynamo model flows are characterized by high-latitude vortices, some equatorial symmetry, columnar convection and a significant amount of flow along radial magnetic field contours. Our inversion method correctly images these aspects of the flows. The correlation coefficient between the dynamo velocity and the imaged velocity exceeds 0.5 in cases with large-scale flow and magnetic field pattern, but degrades substantially in more complex cases when the scale of the secular variation is small. The magnitude of the imaged velocity depends on the a priori-assumed ratio of tangential divergence to radial vorticity k, in some resemblance to the damping parameter in spectral methods, although with our method the misfit is insensitive to k-values. Including tangential magnetic diffusion in core flow inversion improves the quality of the imaged velocity pattern. The largest artefacts in the imaged velocities are due to unmodelled radial magnetic diffusion and truncation of the input magnetic field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-dimensional Boussinesq magnetoconvection with idealized stress-free boundary conditions is numerically investigated in order to make clear the difference between chaos and turbulence. It is shown that the long-term behavior of magnetoconvection exhibits spatially coherent and temporally chaotic rolls in marked contrast to highly turbulent fluids. It is also shown that heat transport becomes larger anomalously when the polarity reversal of the magnetic field occurs intermittently in the case of temporally chaotic magnetoconvection. It is found that the Poincaré return map of the relative maximum temperature fluctuation of partial differential equations as a function of the preceding maximum resembles the famous Lorenz plot in narrow rolls of magnetoconvection. The chaotic behavior of narrow rolls for individual parameter values robustly persists up to rolls about one fifth as wide as they are high near the codimension-two bifurcation point. Abstract: The current understanding of astrophysical magnetic fields is reviewed, focusing on their generation and maintenance by turbulence. In the astrophysical context this generation is usually explained by a self-excited dynamo, which involves flows that can amplify a weak ‘seed’ magnetic field exponentially fast. Particular emphasis is placed on the nonlinear saturation of the dynamo. Analytic and numerical results are discussed both for small scale dynamos, which are completely isotropic, and for large scale dynamos, where some form of parity breaking is crucial. Central to the discussion of large scale dynamos is the so-called alpha effect which explains the generation of a mean field if the turbulence lacks mirror symmetry, i.e. if the flow has kinetic helicity. Large scale dynamos produce small scale helical fields as a waste product that quench the large scale dynamo and hence the alpha effect. A new MHD (magnetohydrodynamics) generator based on electromotive force using seawater, that is, a helical-type seawater MHD generator with a 7 T solenoid superconducting magnet, is designed, constructed and tested. The constructed generator contains a helical insulation wall made of polyvinyl chloride 140 mm long and 100 mm in diameter, an anode rod made of SUS316 1350 mm long and 10 mm in diameter, and a cathode pipe made of SUS316 260 mm long and 100 mm in diameter. In the experiment, electromotive force and generator output are measured in terms of average flow velocity (0-5.6 m/s) and magnetic field (0-7 T) using artificial seawater (3.4% NaCl aqueous solution). As a result of the experiment, it was found that the electromotive force increases proportionally to average flow velocity and magnetic field, and that the generator output increases quadratically to average flow velocity and magnetic field over certain points. We present a novel application of a finite-volume technique to the numerical simulation of thermal convection within a rapidly rotating spherical shell. The performance of the method is extensively tested against a known standard solution at moderate Ekman number. Models at lower Ekman number demonstrate the potential of the method in a parameter range more appropriate to the flow in the molten metallic core of planetary interiors. In addition we present results for the magnetohydrodynamic dynamo problem. In order to avoid the need to solve for the magnetic field in the exterior, we use an approximate magnetic boundary condition. Compared with the geophysically relevant case of insulating boundaries, it is shown that the qualitative structures of the flow and the magnetic field are similar. However, a more quantitative comparison indicates that mean flow velocity and mean magnetic field strength are affected by the boundary conditions by about 20 per cent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A numerical study of the magnetic induction equation has been performed on von Kármán type flows. These flows are generated by two co-axial counter-rotating propellers in cylindrical containers. Such devices are currently used in the von Kármán sodium (VKS) experiment designed to study dynamo action in an unconstrained flow. The mean velocity fields have been measured for different configurations and are introduced in a periodic cylindrical kinematic dynamo code. Depending on the driving configuration, on the poloidal to toroidal flow ratio and on the conductivity of boundaries, some flows are observed to sustain growing magnetic fields for magnetic Reynolds numbers accessible to a sodium experiment. The response of the flow to an external magnetic field has also been studied: The results are in excellent agreement with experimental results in the single propeller case but can differ in the two propellers case. We compare DNS calculations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence with the statistical properties of intracluster turbulence from the Matryoshka Run and find remarkable similarities between their inertial ranges. This allowed us to use the time-dependent statistical properties of intracluster turbulence to evaluate dynamo action in the intracluster medium, based on earlier results from a numerically resolved nonlinear magneto-hydrodynamic turbulent dynamo. We argue that this approach is necessary (a) to properly normalize dynamo action to the available intracluster turbulent energy and (b) to overcome the limitations of low Re affecting current numerical models of the intracluster medium. We find that while the properties of intracluster magnetic field are largely insensitive to the value and origin of the seed field, the resulting values for the Alfvén speed and the outer scale of the magnetic field are consistent with current observational estimates, basically confirming the idea that the magnetic field in today’s galaxy clusters is a record of its past turbulent activity.
