We introduce a new approach, based on machine learning, to estimate pre‐eruptive temperatures and storage depths using clinopyroxene‐melt pairs and clinopyroxene‐only chemistry. The model is calibrated for magmas of a wide compositional range, it complements existing models, and it can be applied independently of tectonic setting. Additionally, it allows the identification of the main chemical exchange mechanisms occurring in response to pressure and temperature variations on the base of experimental data without a priori assumptions. After the validation process, performances are assessed with test data never used during the training phase. We estimate the uncertainty using the root‐mean‐square error (RMSE) and the coefficient of determination (R2). The application of the best performing algorithm (trained in the range 0–40 kbar and 952–1882 K) to clinopyroxene‐melt pairs from primitive to extremely differentiated magmas of both subalkaline and alkaline systems returns a RMSE on the order of 2.6 kbar and 40 K for pressure and temperature, respectively. We additionally present a melt‐ and temperature‐independent clinopyroxene barometer in the range 0–40 kbar, characterized by a RMSE of the order of 3 kbar. Tested for tholeiitic compositions in the range 0–10 kbar, the melt‐ and temperature‐independent clinopyroxene barometer has a RMSE of 1.7 kbar. We finally apply the proposed approach to clinopyroxenes from Iceland, providing new, independent, insights about pre‐eruptive storage depths of Icelandic volcanoes. The general applicability of this model will promote the comparison between the architecture of plumbing systems across tectonic settings and facilitate the comparison between petrologic and geophysical studies. The Adamello intrusive suite is a composite batholith in Northern Italy, with an estimated 2000 km3 volume, assembled incrementally over a time span of 10 to 12 million years. The history of crystallization has been studied in detail through laser ablation ICP-MS and SIMS U–Pb geochronology of zircon, which records prolonged crystallization of each of the different intrusive units at mid-crustal levels between 43·47 and 33·16 Ma. The magmas were episodically extracted from this storage area and ascended to the final intrusion level at ∼6 km paleo-depth. Each batch of melt cooled very rapidly down to the ambient temperature of 250°C, evidenced by distinct cooling paths recorded by amphibole, biotite and K-feldspar 40Ar/39Ar dates. The magma source area was moving from SW to NE with time, causing increasing thermal maturity in the mid-crustal reservoir. The resulting temporal trend of higher degrees of crustal assimiliation in the course of the evolution of the magmatic system can be traced through Hf and O isotopes in zircon. Rough estimates of magma emplacement rates ('magma flux') yield very low values in the range of 10-4 km3/yr, typical of mid-to-upper crustal plutons and increase with time. Although we cannot discern a decrease of magma flux from our own data, we anticipate that a dramatic decrease of magma flux between 33 and 31 Ma along the northern contact lead to cessation of magma emplacement. Abstract: In this contribution we report the results of an experimental study that investigated equilibrium and fractional crystallization of hydrous, transitional alkaline basalt at low oxygen fugacity, under lower to middle crustal conditions to constrain the generation of subaluminous and peralkaline differentiation products that typically occur in rift systems. The experiments reveal that liquids produced by equilibrium crystallization in the range 0.7–1 GPa cannot cross the subaluminous/peralkaline compositional divide. In contrast, fractional crystallization experiments under isobaric and polybaric conditions approach closer the naturally observed trend from subaluminous to evolved peralkaline products suggesting that polybaric differentiation starting at elevated pressures can indeed lead to the transition from subaluminous to peralkaline derivative liquids. The presence of water in the parental magmas of silicic derivative products is of prime importance for the fractionation equilibria as well as for the mobility of such magmas toward shallow crustal levels. We suggest that peralkaline magmas in rift environments are indicative for differentiation under relatively low oxygen fugacity conditions in an extensional environment characterized by a high degree of crustal fracturing that allows rapid upward migration of mafic parental magmas and formation of shallow magma reservoirs. Crystallization–differentiation of parental, hydrous transitional alkaline basalt in such reservoirs is controlled by low pressure phase equilibria that typically evolve through early saturation of anorthite-rich plagioclase and suppressed amphibole crystallization resulting in ‘low-alumina’, peralkaline derivative liquids. Magmatic crystals are characterised by chemical zonation patterns that reflect the thermal and chemical conditions within magma reservoirs in which they grew. Crystals that exhibit similar patterns of zonation are often interpreted to have experienced similar conditions of growth. These patterns of zonation may represent continuous processes such as cooling, or more instantaneous events such as magma injection, and provide an insight into the structure and evolution of a magmatic system, both temporally and spatially. We have developed an algorithm that is objectively able to quantify the similarity within and between suites of magmatic crystals from different samples. Significantly, the algorithm is able to identify correlation that occurs between the interiors of two crystals, but does not extend to the rim, which provides an opportunity to understand the long-term evolution of magmatic systems. We develop and explain the mathematical basis for our algorithm and introduce its application using cathodoluminescence images of zircons from the Kilgore Tuff (USA).
