We present Herschel Space Observatory Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) and Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver Fourier Transform Spectrometer (SPIRE FTS) spectroscopy of a sample of 20 massive Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC). We analyse the brightest far-infrared (far-IR) emission lines, that diagnose the conditions of the heated gas in the YSO envelope and pinpoint their physical origin. We compare the properties of massive Magellanic and Galactic YSOs. We find that [O  i ] and [C  ii ] emission, that originates from the photo-dissociation region associated with the YSOs, is enhanced with respect to the dust continuum in the Magellanic sample. Furthermore the photoelectric heating efficiency is systematically higher for Magellanic YSOs, consistent with reduced grain charge in low metallicity environments. The observed CO emission is likely due to multiple shock components. The gas temperatures, derived from the analysis of CO rotational diagrams, are similar to Galactic estimates. This suggests a common origin to the observed CO excitation, from low-luminosity to massive YSOs, both in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. Bright far-IR line emission provides a mechanism to cool the YSO environment. We find that, even though [O  i ], CO, and [C  ii ] are the main line coolants, there is an indication that CO becomes less important at low metallicity, especially for the SMC sources. This is consistent with a reduction in CO abundance in environments where the dust is warmer due to reduced ultraviolet-shielding. Weak H2O and OH emission is detected, consistent with a modest role in the energy balance of wider massive YSO environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The chemical composition of the PMMR23 red supergiant located in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is analyzed. The abundance of 35 chemical elements and the upper limits of abundance for Tl and U are found. The relative abundance of heavy elements is higher by 0.6-1.0 dex with respect to iron peak elements. The spectra of several SMC red supergiants PMMR27, PMMR28, and PMMR144-located in the region where the velocities of stars and interstellar gas are quite high- show the emission components in the wings of the hydrogen line. This emission is not detected for PMMR23. A possibility of interstellar gas accretion on the atmospheres of PMMR23 and other supergiants in Magellanic Clouds is discussed. Measurements are presented and analysed of the strength of the Ca II triplet lines in red giants in Galactic globular and open clusters, and in a sample of red giants in the LMC disc that have significantly different [Ca/Fe] abundance ratios to the Galactic objects. The Galactic objects are used to generate a calibration between Ca II triplet line strength and [Fe/H], which is then used to estimate [Fe/H]CaT for the LMC stars. The values are then compared with the [Fe/H]spec determinations from high-dispersion spectroscopy. After allowance for a small systematic offset, the two abundance determinations are in excellent agreement. Further, as found in earlier studies, the difference is only a very weak function of the [Ca/Fe] ratio. For example, changing [Ca/Fe] from +0.3 to -0.2 causes the Ca II-based abundance to underestimate [Fe/H]spec by only ~0.15 dex, assuming a Galactic calibration. Consequently, the Ca II triplet approach to metallicity determinations can be used without significant bias to study stellar systems that have substantially different chemical evolution histories. Aims. We present a detailed multi-wavelength study of four new supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The objects were identified as SNR candidates in X-ray observations performed during the survey of the LMC with XMM-Newton. Methods. Data obained with XMM-Newton are used to investigate the morphological and spectral features of the remnants in X-rays. We measure the plasma conditions, look for supernova (SN) ejecta emission, and constrain some of the SNR properties (e.g. age and ambient density). We supplement the X-ray data with optical, infrared, and radio-continuum archival observations, which allow us to understand the conditions resulting in the current appearance of the remnants. Based on the spatially-resolved star formation history (SFH) of the LMC together with the X-ray spectra, we attempt to type the supernovae that created the remnants. Results. We confirm all four objects as SNRs, to which we assign the names MCSNR J0508-6830, MCSNR J0511-6759, MCSNR J0514-6840, and MCSNR J0517-6759. In the first two remnants, an X-ray bright plasma is surrounded by very faint [S ii] emission. The emission from the central plasma is dominated by Fe L-shell lines, and the derived iron abundance is greatly in excess of solar. This establishes their type Ia (i.e. thermonuclear) SN origin. They appear to be more evolved versions of other Magellanic Cloud iron-rich SNRs which are centrally-peaked in X-rays. From the two other remnants (MCSNR J0514-6840 and MCSNR J0517-6759), we do not see ejecta emission. At all wavelengths at which they are detected, the local environment plays a key role in their observational appearance. Context. In the past few years, the hard X-ray astronomy has made a significant step forward, thanks to the monitoring of the IBIS/ISGRI telescope onboard the INTEGRAL satellite and of the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) onboard the Swift observatory. This has provided a huge amount of novel information on many classes of sources. Aims. We have been exploiting the BAT survey data to study the variability and the spectral properties of the new high mass X-ray binary sources detected by INTEGRAL.We investigate the properties of IGR J015712-7259. Methods. We performed timing analysis on the 88-month BAT survey data and on the XRT pointed observations of this source. We also report on the broad-band 0.2-150 keV spectral analysis. Results. We find evidence of a modulation of the hard-X-ray emission with period Po = 35.6 d. The significance of this modulation is 6.1 standard deviations. The broad band spectrum is modeled with an absorbed power law with photon index г ~ 0.4 and a steepening in the BAT energy range modeled with a cutoff at an energy of ~13 keV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud is our closest view of a starburst region and is the ideal environment to investigate important questions regarding the formation, evolution and final fate of the most massive stars. Aims. We analyze the multiplicity properties of the massive O-type star population observed through multi-epoch spectroscopy in the framework of the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey. With 360 O-type stars, this is the largest homogeneous sample of massive stars analyzed to date. Methods. We use multi-epoch spectroscopy and variability analysis to identify spectroscopic binaries. We also use a Monte-Carlo method to correct for observational biases. By modeling simultaneously the observed binary fraction, the distributions of the amplitudes of the radial velocity variations and the distribution of the time scales of these variations, we constrain the intrinsic current binary fraction and period and mass-ratio distributions. Results. We observe a spectroscopic binary fraction of 0:35±0:03, which corresponds to the fraction of objects displaying statistically significant radial velocity variations with an amplitude of at least 20 km s-1.We compute the intrinsic binary fraction to be 0:51±0:04. We adopt power-laws to describe the intrinsic period and mass-ratio distributions: f (log10 P=d) ~ (log10 P=d)π (with log10 P=d in the range 0.15-3.5) and f (q) ~ q" with 0:1 ⩽ q = M2=M1 ⩽ 1:0. The power-law indexes that best reproduce the observed quantities are π = -0:45 ± 0:30 and ⩽ = -1:0 ± 0:4. The period distribution that we obtain thus favours shorter period systems compared to an Öpik law (π = 0). The mass ratio distribution is slightly skewed towards low mass ratio systems but remains incompatible with a random sampling of a classical mass function (⩽ = -2:35). The binary fraction seems mostly uniform across the field of view and independent of the spectral types and luminosity classes. The binary fraction in the outer region of the field of view (r > 7:80, i.e. π117 pc) and among the O9.7 I/II objects are however significantly lower than expected from statistical fluctuations. The observed and intrinsic binary fractions are also lower for the faintest objects in our sample (Ks > 15:5 mag), which results from observational effects and the fact that our O star sample is not magnitude-limited but is defined by a spectral-type cutoff. We also conclude that magnitude-limited investigations are biased towards larger binary fractions. Conclusions. Using the multiplicity properties of the O stars in the Tarantula region and simple evolutionary considerations, we estimate that over 50% of the current O star population will exchange mass with its companion within a binary system. This shows that binary interaction is greatly affecting the evolution and fate of massive stars, and must be taken into account to correctly interpret unresolved populations of massive stars. Context. The study of globular clusters is one of the most powerful ways to learn about a galaxy's chemical evolution and star formation history. They preserve a record of chemical abundances at the time of their formation and are relatively easy to age date. The most detailed knowledge of the chemistry of a star is given by high resolution spectroscopy, which provides accurate abundances for a wide variety of elements, yielding a wealth of information on the various processes involved in the cluster's chemical evolution. Aims. We studied red giant branch (RGB) stars in an old, metal-poor globular cluster of the LargeMagellanic Cloud (LMC), Hodge 11 (H11), in order to measure as many elements as possible. The goal is to compare its chemical trends to those in the Milky Way halo and dwarf spheroidal galaxies in order to help understand the formation history of the LMC and our own Galaxy. Methods. We have obtained high resolution VLT/FLAMES spectra of eight RGB stars in H11. The spectral range allowed us to measure a variety of elements, including Fe, Mg, Ca, Ti, Si, Na, O, Ni, Cr, Sc, Mn, Co, Zn, Ba, La, Eu and Y. Results. We derived a mean [Fe/H] = -2.00 ± 0.04, in the middle of previous determinations. We found low [α/Fe] abundances for our targets, more comparable to values found in dwarf spheroidal galaxies than in the Galactic halo, suggesting that if H11 is representative of its ancient populations then the LMC does not represent a good halo building block. Our [Ca/Fe] value is about 0.3 dex less than that of halo stars used to calibrate the Ca IR triplet technique for deriving metallicity. A hint of a Na abundance spread is observed. Its stars lie at the extreme high O, low Na end of the Na:O anti-correlation displayed by Galactic and LMC globular clusters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT We present new, accurate positions, spectral classifications, radial and rotational velocities, Hα fluxes, equivalent widths and B, V, I, R magnitudes for 579 hot emission-line stars (classes B0-F9) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) which include 469 new discoveries. Candidate emission-line stars were discovered using a deep, high-resolution Hα map of the central 25 degree2 of the LMC obtained by median stacking a dozen 2 h Hα exposures taken with the UK Schmidt Telescope (UKST). Spectroscopic follow-up observations on the Anglo-Australian Telescope, the UKST, the Very Large Telescope, the South African Astronomical Observatory 1.9 m and the 2.3-m telescope at Siding Spring Observatory have established the identity of these faint sources down to magnitude Requiv ∼ 23 for Hα (4.5 × 10−17 ergs cm−2 s−1 Å−1). Confirmed emission-line stars have been assigned an underlying spectral classification through cross-correlation against 131 absorption line template spectra covering the range O1-F8. We confirm 111 previously identified emission-line stars and 64 previously known variable stars with spectral types hotter than F8. The majority of hot stars identified (518 stars or 89 per cent) are of class B. Of all the hot emission-line stars in classes B-F, 130 or 22 per cent are type B[e], characterized by the presence of forbidden emission lines such as [S ii], [N ii] and [O ii]. We report on the physical location of these stars with reference to possible contamination from ambient H ii emission. Only 13 of the emission-line stars require additional high-resolution spectroscopic observations in order to assign a spectroscopic classification. They have nonetheless been added to the catalogue. Along with flux calibration of the Hα emission, we provide the first Hα luminosity function for selected sub-samples after correction for any possible nebula or ambient contamination. We find a moderate correlation between the intensity of Hα emission and the V magnitude of the central star based on SuperCOSMOS magnitudes and Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE)-II photometry where possible. We report on new Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of SNR J0519-6902. The Supernova Remnant (SNR) is small in size (~8 pc) and exhibits a typical SNR spectrum with α = -0.53 ± 0.07, with steeper spectral indices towards the northern limb of the remnant. SNR J0519;6902 contains a low level of radially orientated polarisation at wavelengths of 3 and 6 cm, which is typical of younger SNRs. A fairly strong magnetic field was estimated to ~171 µG. The remnant appears to be the result of a typical Type Ia super¬nova, sharing many properties with another small and young Type Ia LMC SNR, J0509-6731. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SNR-J0453-6829 is an X-ray and radio-bright remnant in the LMC, within which previous studies revealed the presence of a pulsar wind nebula (PWN), making it one of the most interesting SNRs in the Local Group of galaxies. Aims. We study the emission of SNR-J0453-6829 to improve our understanding of its morphology, spectrum, and thus the emission mechanisms in the shell and the PWN of the remnant. Methods. We obtained new radio data with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and analysed archival XMM-Newton observations of SNR-J0453-6829. We studied the morphology of SNR-J0453-6829 from radio, optical, and X-ray images and investigated the energy spectra in the different parts of the remnant. Results. Our radio results confirm that this LMC SNR hosts a typical PWN. The prominent central core of the PWN exhibits a radio spectral index αCore of −0.04 ± 0.04, while in the rest of the SNR shell the spectral slope is somewhat steeper with αShell = −0.43- ± -0.01. We detect regions with a mean polarisation of P ≅ (12 ± 4)% at 6 cm and (9 ± 2)% at 3 cm. The full remnant is of roughly circular shape with dimensions of (31 ± 1) pc- × (29 ± 1) pc. The spectral analysis of the XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS spectra allowed us to derive physical parameters for the SNR. Somewhat depending on the spectral model, we obtain for the remnant a shock temperature of around 0.2 keV and estimate the dynamical age to 12-000-15-000 years. Using a Sedov model we further derive an electron density in the X-ray emitting material of 1.56-cm-3, typical for LMC remnants, a large swept-up mass of 830 M⊙, and an explosion energy of 7.6 × 1050 erg. Context. The rest-frame near-IR spectra of intermediate age (1-2 Gyr) stellar populations are dominated by carbon based absorption features offering a wealth of information. Yet, spectral libraries that include the near-IR wavelength range do not sample a sufficiently broad range of ages and metallicities to allow for accurate calibration of stellar population models and thus the interpretation of the observations. Aims. In this paper we investigate the integrated J- and H-band spectra of six intermediate age and old globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Methods. The observations for six clusters were obtained with the SINFONI integral field spectrograph at the ESO VLT Yepun telescope, covering the J (1.09-1.41 μm) and H-band (1.43-1.86 μm) spectral range. The spectral resolution is 6.7Å in J and 6.6Å in H-band (FWHM). The observations were made in natural seeing, covering the central 24" × 24" of each cluster and in addition sampling the brightest eight red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star candidates within the clusters' tidal radii. Targeted clusters cover the ages of ∼1.3Gyr (NGC1806, NGC2162), 2Gyr (NGC2173) and ∼13Gyr (NGC 1754, NGC 2005, NGC2019). Results. H-band C2 and K-band 12CO(2-0) feature strengths for the LMC globular clusters are compared to the models of Maraston (2005). C2 is reasonably well reproduced by the models at all ages, while 12CO(2-0) shows good agreement for older (age ⩾ 2 Gyr) populations, but the younger (1.3 Gyr) globular clusters do not follow the models. We argue that this is due to the fact that the empirical calibration of the models relies on only a fewMilkyWay carbon star spectra, which show different 12CO(2-0) index strengths than the LMC stars. The C2 absorption feature strength correlates strongly with age. It is present essentially only in populations that have 1-2Gyr old stars, while its value is consistent with zero for older populations. The distinct spectral energy distribution observed for the intermediate age globular clusters in the J- and H-bands agrees well with the model predictions of Maraston for the contribution from the thermally pulsing AGB phase. Conclusions. In this pilot project we present an empirical library of six LMC globular cluster integrated near-IR spectra that are useful for testing stellar population models in this wavelength regime. We show that the H-band C2 absorption feature and the J-, H-band spectral shape can be used as an age indicator for intermediate age stellar populations in integrated spectra of star clusters and galaxies. ABSTRACT We report on the results of observations in the CO(1-0) transition of a complete sample of Southern, intermediate-redshift ( z= 0.2-0.5) ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) using the Mopra 22-m telescope. The 11 ULIRGs with LFIR > 1012.5 L⊙ south of δ=−12° were observed with integration times that varied between 5 and 24 h. Four marginal detections were obtained for individual targets in the sample. The 'stacked' spectrum of the entire sample yields a high significance, 10σ detection of the CO(1-0) transition at an average redshift of z= 0.38. The tightest correlation of LFIR and LCO for published low-redshift ULIRG samples ( z < 0.2) is obtained after normalization of both these measures to a fixed dust temperature. With this normalization the relationship is linear. The distribution of dust-to-molecular hydrogen gas mass displays a systematic increase in dust-to-gas mass with galaxy luminosity for low-redshift samples, but this ratio declines dramatically for intermediate-redshift ULIRGs down to values comparable to that of the Small Magellanic Cloud. The upper envelope to the distribution of ULIRG molecular mass as function of look-back time demonstrates a dramatic rise by almost an order of magnitude from the current epoch out to 5 Gyr. This increase in maximum ULIRG gas mass with look-back time is even more rapid than that of the star formation rate density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared spectroscopy has been obtained for 15 carbon-rich protoplanetary nebulae (PPNe) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and for two other such stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Of these 17 PPNe, the unidentified 21 μm feature is strong in 7 spectra, weak in 2 spectra, and very weak or questionable in 4 spectra. Two of the four spectra without the 21 μm feature have a very strong feature near 11 μm, similar to a feature observed in some carbon-rich planetary nebulae (PNe) in the LMC. We attribute this feature to unusual SiC dust, although the feature-to-continuum ratio is much larger than for SiC features in Galactic or Magellanic Cloud carbon star spectra. The remaining two objects show typical carbon-rich PPNe spectra with no 21 μm features. One of the LMC objects that lacks the 21 μm feature and one SMC object with a questionable 21 μm detection may have mixed dust chemistries based upon their spectral similarity to Galactic [WC] PNe. The 13 objects that either definitely or may show the 21 μm feature have distinct dust shell properties compared to the Galactic 21 μm objects—the 21 μm features are weaker, the estimated dust temperatures are significantly higher, the unidentified infrared (UIR) bands are stronger, and the UIRs show more structure. Four of the 21 μm objects appear to show normal SiC emission features in their spectra. Many of the PPNe show strong 30 μm features, although this feature carries less of the total mid-infrared emission than is normally the case for the Galactic 21 μm PPNe. In this paper, we refine our method for the abundance analysis of high-resolution spectroscopy of the integrated light of unresolved globular clusters (GCs). This method was previously demonstrated for the analysis of old (>10 Gyr) Milky Way (MW) GCs. Here, we extend the technique to young clusters using a training set of nine GCs in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Depending on the signal-to-noise ratio of the data, we use 20-100 Fe lines per cluster to successfully constrain the ages of old clusters to within a ~5 Gyr range, the ages of ~2 Gyr clusters to a 1-2 Gyr range, and the ages of the youngest clusters (0.05-1 Gyr) to a ~200 Myr range. We also demonstrate that we can measure [Fe/H] in clusters with any age less than 12 Gyr with similar or only slightly larger uncertainties (0.1-0.25 dex) than those obtained for old MW GCs (0.1 dex); the slightly larger uncertainties are due to the rapid evolution in stellar populations at these ages. In this paper, we present only Fe abundances and ages. In the next paper in this series, we present our complete analysis of ~20 elements for which we are able to measure abundances. For several of the clusters in this sample, there are no high-resolution abundances in the literature from individual member stars; our results are the first detailed chemical abundances available. We present new FLAMES@VLT spectroscopic observations of 30 stars in the field of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) stellar cluster NGC 1866. NGC 1866 is one of the few young and massive globular clusters that is close enough so that its stars can be individually studied in detail. Radial velocities have been used to separate stars belonging to the cluster and to the LMC field, and the same spectra have been used to derive chemical abundances for a variety of elements, from [Fe/H] to the light (i.e. Na, O, Mg, etc.) to the heavy ones. The average iron abundance of NGC 1866 turns out to be dex (with a dispersion dex), from the analysis of 14 cluster member stars. Within our uncertainties, the cluster stars are homogeneous, as far as chemical composition is concerned, independent of the evolutionary status. The observed cluster stars do not show any sign of the light elements' 'anticorrelation' present in all the Galactic globular clusters so far studied and are also found in the old LMC stellar clusters. A similar lack of anticorrelations has been detected in the massive intermediate-age LMC clusters, indicating a different formation/evolution scenario for the LMC massive clusters younger than ∼3 Gyr with respect to the old ones. Also opposite to the Galactic globulars, the chemical composition of the older red giant branch field stars and of the young post-main-sequence cluster stars show robust homogeneity suggesting a quite similar process of chemical evolution. The field and cluster abundances are in agreement with recent chemical analysis of LMC stars, which show a distinctive chemical pattern for this galaxy with respect to the Milky Way. ABSTRACT We present new photometric and spectroscopic observations of an unusual luminous blue variable (LBV) in NGC 3432, covering three major outbursts in 2008 October, 2009 April and 2009 November. Previously, this star experienced an outburst also in 2000 (known as SN 2000ch). During outbursts the star reached an absolute magnitude between −12.1 and −12.8. Its spectrum showed H, He i and Fe ii lines with P-Cygni profiles during and soon after the eruptive phases, while only intermediate-width lines in pure emission (including He iiλ4686) were visible during quiescence. The fast-evolving light curve soon after the outbursts, the quasi-modulated light curve, the peak magnitude and the overall spectral properties are consistent with multiple episodes of variability of an extremely active LBV. However, the widths of the spectral lines indicate unusually high wind velocities (1500-2800 km s−1), similar to those observed in Wolf-Rayet stars. Although modulated light curves are typical of LBVs during the S-Dor variability phase, the luminous maxima and the high frequency of outbursts are unexpected in S-Dor variables. Such extreme variability may be associated with repeated ejection episodes during a giant eruption of an LBV. Alternatively, it may be indicative of a high level of instability shortly preceding the core-collapse or due to interaction with a massive, binary companion. In this context, the variable in NGC 3432 shares some similarities with the famous stellar system HD 5980 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, which includes an erupting LBV and an early Wolf-Rayet star. The correlation between the large-scale distribution of galaxies and their spectroscopic properties at is investigated using the Horizon MareNostrum cosmological run. We have extracted a large sample of 105 galaxies from this large hydrodynamical simulation featuring standard galaxy formation physics. Spectral synthesis is applied to these single stellar populations to generate spectra and colours for all galaxies. We use the skeleton as a tracer of the cosmic web and study how our galaxy catalogue depends on the distance to the skeleton. We show that galaxies closer to the skeleton tend to be redder but that the effect is mostly due to the proximity of large haloes at the nodes of the skeleton, rather than the filaments themselves. This effect translates into a bimodality in the colour distribution of our sample. The origin of this bimodality is investigated and seems to follow from the ram pressure stripping of satellite galaxies within the more massive clusters of the simulation. Far-infrared [C ii] 158-μm, [O i] 145-μm and [O i] 63-μm fine structure emission-line fluxes were measured from archival Infrared Space Observatory Long Wavelength Spectrometer spectra of 46 extragalactic sources, with 28 sources providing detections in all three lines. For 12 of the sources, the contribution to the [C ii] 158-μm line flux from H ii regions could be estimated from their detected [N ii] 122-μm line fluxes. The measured [C ii]/[O i] and [O i] 63/145-μm line flux ratios were compared with those from a grid of photodissociation region (PDR) models previously computed using theucl_pdr code. Persistent offsets between the observed and modelled line ratios could be partly attributed to the effects of [O i] 63-μm self-absorption. Using the Spherical Multi-Mol (smmol) code, we calculated model [O i] line profiles and found that the strength of the [O i] 63-μm line was reduced by 20–80 per cent, depending on the PDR parameters. We conclude that high PDR densities and radiation field strengths, coupled with the effects of [O i] 63-μm self-absorption, are likely to provide the best match to the observed line flux ratios. We present synthetic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for single-age, single-metallicity stellar populations (SSPs) covering the full optical spectral range at moderately high resolution [full width at half-maximum (FWHM) 2.3 Å]. These SEDs constitute our base models, as they combine scaled-solar isochrones with an empirical stellar spectral library [Medium resolution INT Library of Empirical Spectra (MILES)], which follows the chemical evolution pattern of the solar neighbourhood. The models rely as much as possible on empirical ingredients, not just on the stellar spectra, but also on extensive photometric libraries, which are used to determine the transformations from the theoretical parameters of the isochrones to observational quantities. The unprecedented stellar parameter coverage of the MILES stellar library allowed us to safely extend our optical SSP SED predictions from intermediate- to very-old-age regimes and the metallicity coverage of the SSPs from super-solar to . SSPs with such low metallicities are particularly useful for globular cluster studies. We have computed SSP SEDs for a suite of initial mass function shapes and slopes. We provide a quantitative analysis of the dependence of the synthesized SSP SEDs on the (in)complete coverage of the stellar parameter space in the input library that not only shows that our models are of higher quality than those of other works, but also in which range of SSP parameters our models are reliable. The SSP SEDs are a useful tool to perform the analysis of stellar populations in a very flexible manner. Observed spectra can be studied by means of full spectrum fitting or by using line indices. For the latter, we propose a new line index system to avoid the intrinsic uncertainties associated with the popular Lick/IDS system and provide more appropriate, uniform, spectral resolution. Apart from constant resolution as a function of wavelength, the system is also based on flux-calibrated spectra. Data can be analysed at three different resolutions: 5, 8.4 and 14 Å (FWHM), which are appropriate for studying globular cluster, low- and intermediate-mass galaxies, and massive galaxies, respectively. Furthermore, we provide polynomials to transform current Lick/IDS line index measurements to the new system. We provide line index tables in the new system for various popular samples of Galactic globular clusters and galaxies. We apply the models to various stellar clusters and galaxies with high-quality spectra, for which independent studies are available, obtaining excellent results. Finally, we designed a web page from which not only these models and stellar libraries can be downloaded but which also provides a suite of on-line tools to facilitate the handling and transformation of the spectra. Weak emission line quasars are a rare and puzzling group of objects. In this paper, we present one more object of this class found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The quasar SDSS J094533.99+100950.1, lying at , has practically no C iv emission line, a red continuum very similar to the second steepest of the quasar composite spectra of Richards et al., is not strongly affected by absorption and the Mg ii line, although relatively weak, is strong enough to measure the black hole mass. The Eddington ratio in this object is about 0.45, and the line properties are not consistent with the trends expected at high accretion rates. We propose that the most probable explanation of the line properties in this object, and perhaps in all weak emission line quasars, is that the quasar activity has just started. A disc wind is freshly launched so the low ionization lines which form close to the disc surface are already observed but the wind has not yet reached the regions where high ionization lines or narrow line components are formed. The relatively high occurrence of such a phenomenon may additionally indicate that the quasar active phase consists of several subphases, each starting with a fresh build-up of the broad-line region. The environment is known to affect the formation and evolution of galaxies considerably best visible through the well-known morphology–density relationship. It is less clear, though, whether the environment is equally important at a given galaxy morphology. In this paper, we study the effect of environment on the evolution of early-type galaxies as imprinted in the fossil record by analysing the stellar population properties of 3360 galaxies morphologically selected by visual inspection from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in a narrow redshift range ( ). The morphological selection algorithm is critical, as it does not bias against recent star formation. We find that the distribution of ages is bimodal with a strong peak at old ages and a secondary peak at young ages around ∼2.5 Gyr containing about 10 per cent of the objects. This is an analogue to ‘red sequence’ and ‘blue cloud’ identified in galaxy populations usually containing both early- and late-type galaxies. The fraction of the young, rejuvenated galaxies increases with both decreasing galaxy mass and decreasing environmental density up to about 45 per cent, which implies that the impact of environment increases with decreasing galaxy mass. The rejuvenated galaxies have lower ratios than the average and most of them show signs of ongoing star formation through their emission line spectra. All objects that host active galactic nuclei in their centres without star formation are part of the red sequence population. We confirm and statistically strengthen earlier results that luminosity weighted ages, metallicities and element ratios of the red sequence population correlate well with velocity dispersion and galaxy mass. Most interestingly, however, these scaling relations are not sensitive to environmental densities and are only driven by galaxy mass. We infer that early-type galaxy formation has undergone a phase transition a few billion years ago around . A self-regulated formation phase without environmental dependence has recently been superseded by a rejuvenation phase, in which the environment plays a decisive role possibly through galaxy mergers and interactions. We analyse Spitzer Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) 24- m observations, and Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 optical broad-band photometry and spectra, to investigate the star formation (SF) properties of galaxies residing in the Coma supercluster region. We find that SF in dwarf galaxies is quenched only in the high-density environment at the centre of clusters and groups, but that passively evolving massive galaxies are found in all environments, indicating that massive galaxies can become passive via internal processes. The SF–density relation observed for the massive galaxies is weaker relative to the dwarfs, but both show a trend for the fraction of star-forming galaxies ( ) declining to 0 in the cluster cores. We find that active galactic nucleus activity is also suppressed among massive galaxies residing in the cluster cores. We present evidence for a strong dependence of the mechanism(s) responsible for quenching SF in dwarf galaxies on the cluster potential, resulting in two distinct evolutionary pathways. First, we find a significant increase (at the 3 level) in the mean equivalent width of Hα emission among star-forming dwarf galaxies in the infall regions of the Coma cluster and the core of Abell 1367 with respect to the overall supercluster population, indicative of the infalling dwarf galaxies undergoing a starburst phase. We identify these starburst galaxies as the precursors of the post-starburst k + A galaxies. Extending the survey of k + A galaxies over the whole supercluster region, we find 11.4 per cent of all dwarf ( mag 15) galaxies in the Coma cluster and 4.8 per cent in the Abell 1367 have post-starburst like spectra, while this fraction is just 2.1 per cent when averaged over the entire supercluster region (excluding the clusters). This points to a cluster-specific evolutionary process in which infalling dwarf galaxies undergo a starburst and subsequent rapid quenching due to their passage through the dense intracluster medium. In galaxy groups, the SF in infalling dwarf galaxies is instead slowly quenched due to the reduced efficiency of ram-pressure stripping. We show that in the central Mpc of the Coma cluster, the ( ) near-infrared/mid-infrared (MIR) colour of galaxies is correlated with their optical colour and Hα emission, separating all MIR-detected galaxies into two distinct classes of ‘red’ and ‘blue’. By analysing the spatial and velocity distribution of galaxies detected at 24 m in Coma, we find that the (optically) red 24- m detected galaxies follow the general distribution of ‘all’ the spectroscopic members, but their (optically) blue counterparts (i) are almost completely absent in the central Mpc of Coma and (ii) have a remarkable peak in their velocity distribution, corresponding to the mean radial velocity of the galaxy group NGC 4839, suggesting that a significant fraction of the ‘blue’ MIR galaxies are currently on their first infall towards the cluster. We present optical and infrared (IR) integrated colours and surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) magnitudes, computed from stellar population synthesis models that include emission from the dusty envelopes surrounding thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars undergoing mass loss. We explore the effects of varying the mass-loss rate by one order of magnitude around the fiducial value, modifying accordingly both the stellar parameters and the output spectra of the TP-AGB stars plus their dusty envelopes. The models are single burst, and range in age from a few Myr to 14 Gyr, and in metallicity between and 0.07; they combine new calculations for the evolution of stars in the TP-AGB phase, with star plus envelope spectral energy distributions (SEDs) produced with the radiative transfer codedusty. We compare these models to optical and near-IR data of single AGB stars and Magellanic star clusters. This comparison validates the current understanding of the role of mass loss in determining stellar parameters and spectra in the TP-AGB. However, neither broad-band colours nor SBF measurements in the optical or the near-IR can discern global changes in the mass-loss rate of a stellar population. We predict that mid-IR SBF measurements can pick out such changes, and actually resolve whether a relation between metallicity and mass loss exists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the results of a near-infrared survey for long-period variables in a field of view of 20× 30 arcmin2 towards the Galactic Centre (GC). We have detected 1364 variables, of which 348 are identified with those reported in Glass et al. We present a catalogue and photometric measurements for the detected variables and discuss their nature. We also establish a method for the simultaneous estimation of distances and extinctions using the period–luminosity relations for the JHKs bands. Our method is applicable to Miras with periods in the range 100–350 d and mean magnitudes available in two or more filter bands. While J band means are often unavailable for our objects because of the large extinction, we estimated distances and extinctions for 143 Miras whose H- and -band mean magnitudes are obtained. We find that most are located at the same distance to within our accuracy. Assuming that the barycentre of these Miras corresponds to the GC, we estimate its distance modulus to be , corresponding to . We have assumed the distance modulus to the Large Magellanic Cloud to be 18.45 mag, and the uncertainty in this quantity is included in the above systematic error. We also discuss the large and highly variable extinction. Its value ranges from 1.5 mag to larger than 4 mag in except towards the thicker dark nebulae and it varies in a complicated way with the line of sight. We have identified mid-infrared counterparts in the Spitzer/IRAC catalogue of Ramírez et al. for most of our variables and find that they follow rather narrow period–luminosity relations in the 3.6–8.0 μm wavelength range. JHKs magnitudes corrected to mean intensity are estimated for Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) type II Cepheids in the OGLE-III survey the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). Period–luminosity (PL) relations are derived in JHKs as well as in a reddening-free VI parameter. Within the uncertainties, the BL Her stars and the W Vir stars ( to 20 d) are colinear in these PL relations. The slopes of the infrared relations agree with those found previously for type II Cepheids in globular clusters within the uncertainties. Using the pulsation parallaxes of V553 Cen and SW Tau, the data lead to an LMC modulus uncorrected for any metallicity effects of mag. The type II Cepheids in the second-parameter globular cluster, NGC 6441, show a PL( VI) relation of the same slope as that in the LMC, and this leads to a cluster distance modulus of mag, confirming the hypothesis that the RR Lyrae variables in this cluster are overluminous for their metallicity. It is suggested that the Galactic variable κ Pavonis is a member of the peculiar W Vir class found by the OGLE-III group in the LMC. Low-resolution spectra of OGLE-III type II Cepheids with d (RV Tau stars) show that a high proportion have TiO bands; only one has been found showing C2. The LMC RV Tau stars, as a group, are not colinear with the shorter period type II Cepheids in the infrared PL relations in marked contrast to such stars in globular clusters. We present 11 spectra from 12 candidate radio sources co-identified with known planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Originally found in Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) LMC surveys at 1.4, 4.8 and 8.64 GHz and confirmed by new high resolution ATCA images at 6 and 3 cm (400/200), these complement data recently presented for candidate radio PNe in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Their spectra were obtained using the Radclifie 1.9-meter telescope in Sutherland (South Africa). All of the optical PNe and radio candidates are within 200 and may represent a population of selected radio bright sample only. Nebular ionized masses of these objects are estimated to be as high as 1.8 Mʘ, supporting the idea that massive PNe progenitor central stars lose much of their mass in the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase or prior. The spectral distributions of Be/X-ray binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud and Galaxy have been shown to differ significantly from the distribution of isolated Be stars in the Galaxy. Population synthesis models can explain this difference in spectral distributions through substantial angular momentum loss from the binary system. In this work, we explore the spectral distribution of Be/X-ray binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using high signal-to-noise ratio spectroscopy of a sample of 37 optical counterparts to known X-ray pulsars. Our results show that the spectral distribution of Be/X-ray binaries in the SMC is consistent with that of the Galaxy, despite the lower metallicity environment of the SMC. This may indicate that, although the metallicity of the SMC is conducive to the formation of a large number of high-mass X-ray binaries, the spectral distribution of these systems is likely to be most strongly influenced by angular momentum losses during binary evolution, which are not particularly dependent on the local metallicity. We present integrated JHKS Two-Micron All-Sky Survey photometry and a compilation of integrated-light optical photoelectric measurements for 84 star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. These clusters range in age from ≈200 Myr to >10 Gyr, and have [Fe/H] values from −2.2 to −0.1 dex. We find a spread in the intrinsic colours of clusters with similar ages and metallicities, at least some of which is due to stochastic fluctuations in the number of bright stars residing in low-mass clusters. We use 54 clusters with the most-reliable age and metallicity estimates as test particles to evaluate the performance of four widely used simple stellar population models in the optical/near-infrared (near-IR) colour–colour space. All models reproduce the reddening-corrected colours of the old (≥10 Gyr) globular clusters quite well, but model performance varies at younger ages. In order to account for the effects of stochastic fluctuations in individual clusters, we provide composite and colours for Magellanic Cloud clusters in several different age intervals. The accumulated masses for most composite clusters are higher than that needed to keep luminosity variations due to stochastic fluctuations below the 10 per cent level. The colours of the composite clusters are clearly distinct in optical–near-IR colour–colour space for the following intervals of age: >10 Gyr, 2–9 Gyr, 1–2 Gyr, and 200 Myr−1 Gyr. We present preliminary results from spectral observations of four (4) candidate radio sources co-identified with known planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These were made using the Radcliffe 1.9-meter telescope in Sutherland, South Africa. These radio PNe were originally found in Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) surveys of the SMC at 1.42 and 2.37 GHz, and were further confirmed by new high resolution ATCA images at 6 and 3 cm (4"/2"). Optical PNe and radio candidates are within 2" and may represent a sub-population of selected radio bright objects. Nebular ionized masses of these objects may be 2.6 M☉ or greater, supporting the existence of PNe progenitor central stars with masses up to 8 M☉. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use long-slit spectra from shocked regions of radio supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud to estimate electron density and derive an average ‘metal’ abundance of 10−3.9 based on diagnostic line ratio plots. These simple diagnostics may be especially useful to determine abundances in more distant galaxies. Abundance values listed in this paper, in units of log(x/H) + 12, for nitrogen (7.3) and oxygen (8.2) agree with those reported in the literature. These estimates – which we assume to be dominated by the interstellar medium with little evolutionary interference – were obtained from spectral analysis of ∼50 per cent of known radio SNRs using the double beam spectrograph on the 2.3-m Advanced Technology Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory in Australia and the Cassegrain spectrograph on the 1.9-m Radcliffe telescope at the South African Astronomical Observatory. We also found optical evidence of shocked regions near 2 of 20 radio SNR candidates (J053620−693136 and J053731−662740), strengthening their identification as true remnants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present Spitzer Space Telescope spectroscopic observations of 14 carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). SiC dust is seen in most of the carbon-rich stars but it is weak compared to Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) stars. The SiC feature is strong only for stars with significant dust excess, opposite to what is observed for Galactic stars. We argue that in the SMC, SiC forms at lower temperature than graphite dust, whereas in the Galaxy SiC and graphite condensate at more comparable temperatures. Dust input into the interstellar medium by AGB stars consists mostly of carbonaceous dust, with little SiC or silicate dust. Only the two coolest stars show a 30-μm band due to MgS dust. We suggest that this is due to the fact that, in the SMC, mass-losing AGB stars generally have low circumstellar (dust) optical depth and therefore effective heating of dust by the central star does not allow temperatures below the 650 K necessary for MgS to exist as a solid. Gas phase C2H2 bands are stronger in the SMC than in the LMC or Galaxy. This is attributed to an increasing C/O ratio at low metallicity. We present a colour–colour diagram based on Spitzer InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) and Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) colours to discriminate between O- and C-rich stars. We show that AGB stars in the SMC become carbon stars early in the thermal-pulsing AGB evolution, and remain optically visible for . For the LMC, this lifetime is . Dust radiative transfer models are presented for 60 carbon stars in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) for which 5–35 μm Spitzer infrared spectrograph (IRS) spectra and quasi-simultaneous ground-based JHKL photometry are available. From the modelling, the luminosity and mass-loss rate are derived (under the assumption of a fixed expansion velocity and dust-to-gas ratio), and the ratio of silicon carbide (SiC) to amorphous carbon (AMC) dust is also derived. This ratio is smaller than observed in Galactic carbon stars, as has been noted before. Light curves for 36 objects can be retrieved from the massive compact halo object (MACHO) and optical gravitational lensing experiment (OGLE) data bases, and periods can be derived for all but two of these. Including data from the literature, periods are available for 53 stars. There is significant scatter in a diagram where the mass-loss rates are plotted against luminosity, and this is partly due to the fact that the luminosities are derived from single-epoch data. The mass-loss rates for the MC objects roughly scatter around the mean relation for Galactic C-stars. The situation is better defined when the mass-loss rate is plotted against pulsation period. For a given period, most of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) stars have mass-loss rates that are in agreement with that observed in Galactic carbon stars (under the assumption that these objects have an expansion velocity and dust-to-gas ratio typical of the mean observed in Galactic carbon Miras). For some SMC sources only, the IRS spectrum at longer wavelengths falls clearly below the model flux predicted by a constant mass-loss rate. An alternative model with a substantial increase of the mass-loss rate to its present-day value over a time-scale of a few tens of years is able to explain the spectral energy distribution (SED) and IRS spectra of these sources. However, the probability to have two such cases in a sample of 60 is small, and makes this not a likely explanation (and testable by re-observing these objects near the end of the lifetime of Spitzer). Alternative explanations are (ad hoc) changes to the dust emissivity at longer wavelengths, and/or deviations from spherical symmetry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an analysis of three strong, intervening Mg II absorption systems towards the optical afterglow of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 060418. From high-resolution Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) spectra we measure metal column densities and find that the highest redshift absorber exhibits a large amount of dust depletion compared with damped Lyman absorbers (DLAs) seen in quasi-stellar object (QSO) spectra. The intervening absorber is also unusual in exhibiting a clear 2175-Å bump, the first time this feature has been definitively detected in a GRB spectrum. The GRB afterglow spectrum is best fitted with a two-component extinction curve: a Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) extinction law at (the redshift of the host) with and a Galactic extinction curve at with . We also present a moderately deep New Technology Telescope (NTT) R-band image of the GRB 060418 field and spectroscopy of four galaxies within 1 arcmin. None of these objects has a redshift that matches any of the intervening absorbers, and we conclude that the galaxies responsible for the two intervening Mg ii absorbers at have luminosities . We present a Spitzer Space Telescope spectroscopic survey of mass-losing carbon stars (and one oxygen-rich star) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The stars represent the superwind phase on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), which forms a major source of dust for the interstellar medium (ISM) in galaxies. Bolometric magnitudes indicate progenitor masses of . The spectra cover the wavelength range 5–38 μm. They show varying combinations of dust continuum, dust emission features (SiC, MgS) and molecular absorption bands (C2H2, HCN). A 10-μm absorption feature is attributed to C3. A weak band at 5.8 μm is suggestive of carbonyl. The circumstellar 7.5-μm C2H2 band is found to be stronger at lower metallicity, explained by higher C/O ratios at low metallicity. The versus colours, used to select the sample, are shown to be relatively insensitive in separating carbon versus oxygen-rich AGB stars. The predominance of carbon stars therefore indicates that in the range , LMC AGB stars become carbon-rich before onset of the superwind. A set of four narrow bands, dubbed the Manchester system, is used to define the infrared continuum for dusty carbon stars. We investigate the strength and central wavelength of the SiC and MgS dust bands as a function of colour and metallicity. The line-to-continuum ratio of these bands shows some indication of being lower at low metallicity. The MgS band is only seen at dust temperatures below 600 K. Metal-poor carbon stars can form amorphous carbon dust from self-produced carbon. The formation efficiency of oxygen-rich dust depends more strongly on metallicity. In lower-metallicity environments, the dust input into the ISM by AGB stars may be strongly biased towards carbonaceous dust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We reinvestigate the massive stellar content of the irregular dwarf galaxy NGC 3125 (Tol 3) using Very Large Telescope (VLT)/FORS1 imaging and spectroscopy, plus archival VLT/ISAAC, Hubble Space Telescope ( HST)/FOC and HST/STIS data sets. FORS1 narrow-band imaging confirms that the NGC 3125-A and -B knots represent the primary sites of Wolf–Rayet (WR) stars, whilst HST imaging reveals that both regions host two clusters. Both clusters within region A host WR stars (A1 and A2), for which the optically fainter cluster A2 is heavily reddened. It is not clear which cluster within region B hosts WR stars. Nebular properties are in good agreement with previous studies and infer a Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) like metallicity of log(O/H)+12∼8.3. LMC template mid-type WN and early-type WC spectra are matched to the observed blue and red WR bumps of A1 and B, permitting the contribution of WC stars to the blue bump to be quantified. From our FORS1 spectroscopy, we obtain N(WN5–6:WC4) = 105:20, ∼55:0 and 40:20 for the clusters A1, A2 and B1 + 2, respectively. Our results are a factor of ∼3 lower than previously reported by optical studies as a result of a lower Hα/Hβ derived interstellar reddening. Using Starburst99 theoretical energy distributions to estimate O star populations for each cluster, we find N(WR)/ N(O) = 0.2 for A1 and 0.1 for A2 and the clusters within region B. From Hα narrow-band imaging, the O star content of the Giant H ii regions A and B is found to be a factor of 5–10 times higher than that derived spectroscopically for the ultraviolet (UV)/optically bright clusters, suggesting that NGC 3125 hosts optically obscured young massive clusters, further supported by VLT/ISAAC K-band imaging. Archival HST/STIS UV spectroscopy confirms the low interstellar reddening towards A1, for which we have determined a Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) extinction law for NGC 3125, in preference to an LMC or starburst law. We obtain N(WN5–6) = 110 from the slit loss corrected He iiλ1640 line flux. This is in excellent agreement with optical results, although it is a factor of 35 times lower than that inferred from the same data set by Chandar, Leitherer & Tremonti. The discrepancy is due to an anomalously high interstellar reddening derived from their use of the generic starburst extinction law. Highly discrepant stellar populations may result in spatially resolved star-forming regions from UV and optical studies through the use of different extinction laws. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional identification of supernova remnants (SNRs) include the use of radio spectral index, optical spectral studies (including strong [S ii], [N ii], [O i], [O ii] and [O iii] lines) and X-ray co-identifications. Each of these can have significant limitations within the context of a particular SNR candidate and new identification methods are continually sought. In this paper, we explore subtraction techniques by Ye, Turtle and Kennicutt to remove thermal emission estimated from Hα flux from radio-continuum images. The remaining non-thermal emission allows the identification of SNRs embedded within these H ii regions. Subtraction images of the N 66 region in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using Hα wide-field optical CCD images from the Curtis Schmidt Telescope and the recent Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA)/Parkes radio-continuum (1420, 2370, 4800 and 8640 MHz) data are presented as an example. These show three SNRs (B0057 − 724, B0056 − 724 and B0056 − 725) separated from their surrounding H ii radio emission. 2.3-m dual-beam spectrograph long-slit spectra from selected regions within N 66 suggest the presence of an additional SNR with no radio or X-ray emission. Radio spectral index, [S ii]/Hα ratio and archived Chandra images of N 66 combine to give a more coherent picture of this region, confirming B0057 − 724 as an SNR. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) star cluster system offers the unique opportunity to independently check the accuracy of age (and the corresponding mass) determinations based on a number of complementary techniques. Using our sophisticated tool for star cluster analysis based on broad-band spectral energy distributions (SEDs), ‘AnalySED’, we re-analyse the Hunter et al. LMC cluster photometry. Our main aim is to set the tightest limits yet on the accuracy of absolute age determinations based on broad-band SEDs, and therefore on the usefulness of such an approach. Our broad-band SED fits yield reliable ages, with statistical absolute uncertainties within overall. The systematic differences we find with respect to previous age determinations are caused by conversions of the observational photometry to a different filter system, thus leading to systematically inaccurate results. The LMC's cluster formation rate (CFR) has been roughly constant outside of the well-known age gap between ∼3 and 13 Gyr, when the CFR was a factor of ∼5 lower. Using a simple approach to derive the characteristic cluster disruption time-scale, we find that , where . This long characteristic disruption time-scale implies that we are observing the initial cluster mass function (CMF). We conclude that while the older cluster (sub)samples show CMF slopes that are fully consistent with the slopes generally observed in young star cluster systems, the youngest mass and luminosity-limited LMC cluster subsets show shallower slopes (at least below masses of a few ), which is contrary to dynamical expectations. This may imply that the initial CMF slope of the LMC cluster system as a whole is not well represented by a power law, although we cannot disentangle the unbound from the bound clusters at the youngest ages. We report our initial discovery of 73 new planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) following confirmatory 2dF spectroscopy on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Preliminary candidate sources come from a 10 per cent sub-area of our new deep, high-resolution Hα map of the central 25 deg2 of the LMC obtained with the UK Schmidt Telescope. The depth of the high-resolution map was extended to for by a process of multi-exposure median co-addition of a dozen 2-h Hα exposures. The resulting map is at least 1-mag deeper than the best wide-field narrow-band LMC images currently available. This depth, combined with our selection technique, has also led to the discovery of extended asymptotic giant branch (AGB) haloes around many new and previously known LMC PNe for the first time. Once complete, our new survey is expected to triple the LMC PN population and have significant implications for the LMC PN luminosity function, kinematics, abundance gradients, chemical evolution and, via study of the AGB haloes, the initial to final mass relation for low- to intermediate-mass stars. The highly luminous supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs) are believed to be Eddington-limited accreting white dwarfs undergoing surface hydrogen burning. The current paradigm for SSSs involves thermally unstable mass transfer from a companion. However, this model has never been directly confirmed and yet is crucial for the evolution of cataclysmic variables (CVs) in general, and for the establishment of SSSs as progenitors of Type Ia supernovae in particular. The key SSS is RX which has recurrent X-ray outbursts every 100–200 d (lasting for ∼40 d) during which the optical brightness declines by 1 mag. We present the first XMM observations of RX through one of its optical low states. Our results show that as the optical low state progresses, the temperature and X-ray luminosity decrease, behaviour that is anti-correlated with the optical and ultraviolet (UV) emission. We find that as the optical (and UV) intensity recovers, the radius implied by the spectral fits increases. The high-resolution spectra show evidence of deep-absorption features which vary during the optical low state. We present spectroscopic observations, taken with the Very Large Telescope/Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph telescope/instrument, of the unusual Small Magellanic Cloud X-ray binary system SXP 323 = AX J0051−733. This system shows a clear modulation at 0.71 d in long-term optical photometry, which has been proposed as the binary period of this system. The high-resolution optical spectra, taken at a range of phases during the 0.71-d cycle, rule out this possibility. Instead it is suggested that this long-term effect is due to non-radial pulsations in the Be star companion to SXP 323. In addition, the spectra show clear evidence for major changes in the ( V/ R) ratio of the double peaks of the Balmer lines indicative of asymmetries in the circumstellar disc. We present synthetic spectra for circumstellar discs that are heated by radiation from a central brown dwarf. Under the assumption of vertical hydrostatic equilibrium, our models yield scaleheights for brown dwarf discs in excess of three times those derived for classical T Tauri (CTTS) discs. If the near-IR excess emission observed from brown dwarfs is indeed due to circumstellar discs, then the large scaleheights we find could have a significant impact on the optical and near-IR detectability of such systems. Our radiation transfer calculations show that such highly flared discs around brown dwarfs will result in a large fraction of obscured sources due to extinction of direct starlight by the disc over a wide range of sightlines. The obscured fraction for a ‘typical’ CTTS is less than 20 per cent. We show that the obscured fraction for brown dwarfs may be double that for CTTS, but this depends on stellar and disc mass. We also comment on possible confusion in identifying brown dwarfs via colour–magnitude diagrams: edge-on CTTS display similar colours and magnitudes to face-on brown dwarf plus disc systems. We address the relationship between spectral type and physical properties for A-type supergiants in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). First, we construct a self-consistent classification scheme for A supergiants, employing the calcium K to Hε line ratio as a temperature-sequence discriminant. Following the precepts of the ‘MK process’, the same morphological criteria are applied to Galactic and SMC spectra, with the understanding that there may not be a correspondence in physical properties between spectral counterparts in different environments. Then we discuss the temperature scale, concluding that A supergiants in the SMC are systematically cooler than their Galactic counterparts at the same spectral type, by up to ∼10 per cent. Considering the relative line strengths of Hγ and the CH G band, we extend our study to F- and early G-type supergiants, for which similar effects are found. We note the implications for analyses of luminous extragalactic supergiants, for the flux-weighted gravity–luminosity relationship and for population synthesis studies in unresolved stellar systems. ABSTRACT A sample of 1497 carbon stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been observed in the red part of the spectrum with the 2dF facility on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Of these, 156 have been identified as J-type (i.e. [sup 13]C-rich) carbon stars using a technique which provides a clear distinction between J stars and the normal N-type carbon stars that comprise the bulk of the sample, and yields few borderline cases. A simple two-dimensional classification of the spectra, based on their spectral slopes in different wavelength regions, has been constructed and found to be related to the more conventional c and j indices, modified to suit the spectral regions observed. Most of the J stars form a photometric sequence in the K- (J-K) colour–magnitude diagram, parallel to and 0.6 mag fainter than the N-star sequence. A subset of the J stars (about 13 per cent) are brighter than this J-star sequence; most of these are spectroscopically different from the other J stars. The bright J stars have stronger CN bands than the other J stars and are found strongly concentrated in the central regions of the LMC. Most of the rather few stars in common with Hartwick and Cowley's sample of suspected CH stars are J stars. Overall, the proportion of carbon stars identified as J stars is somewhat lower than has been found in the Galaxy. The Na D lines are weaker in the LMC J stars than in either the Galactic J stars or the LMC N stars, and do not seem to depend on temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT We report on the spectroscopic and photometric analysis of possible optical counterparts to four X-ray sources in the Small Magellanic Cloud: AX J0049.4–7323, AX J0057.4–7325, RX J0058.2–7321 and RX J0101.1–7206. In the case of the last two, we suggest that the presence of strong Hα emission from previously proposed optical candidates is definite confirmation that these are Be stars. Similarly, we detected strong Hα emission from the optical source identified with RX J0049.7–7323 within the error circle for AX J0049.4–7323 and we conclude that these are one and the same object. We were unable to detect any Hα emission from any of the candidates for AX J0057.4–7325 and the associated photometric analysis was also inconclusive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The light from historical supernovae could in principle still be visible as scattered-light echoes centuries after the explosion. The detection of light echoes could allow us to pinpoint the supernova event both in position and age and, most importantly, permit the acquisition of spectra to determine the ‘type’ of the supernova centuries after the direct light from the explosion first reached Earth. Although echoes have been discovered around some nearby extragalactic supernovae, targeted searches have not found any echoes in the regions of historical Galactic supernovae. Here we report three faint variable-surface-brightness complexes with high apparent proper motions pointing back to three of the six smallest (and probably youngest) previously catalogued supernova remnants in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which are believed to have been thermonuclear (type Ia) supernovae. Using the distance and apparent proper motions of these echo arcs, we estimate ages of 610 and 410 years for two of them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
