Yaa baa, « le médicament qui rend fou ». En Thaïlande le surnom de la méthamphétamine sonne comme un avertissement, mais il n’a pas dissuadé des centaines de milliers de Thaïlandais, jeunes pour la plupart, de s’y adonner avec plus ou moins de retenue. « Drogue de travail » ou « drogue de loisir », il s’agit d’un véritable phénomène de société qui n’est pas étranger aux évolutions économiques et aux mutations culturelles qu’a connues le royaume au cours de ces dernières décennies. In most Southeast Asian countries, the members of the Chinese Diaspora have secured important position in the fields of administration, education and religion. Thanks to their capacity to work and to adapt as well as their frugality, their cultural influence continues to grow. Clans and factions form the essential structure of the ancient Chinese society. If Imperial China never developed a Civil Law, it's probably because the ancient Chinese society never really saw the need for it. This structure of relations could also explain why the Chinese civilisation didn't develop a real territorial reference. The Chinese Diaspora today covers different political and economical realities which could be conflicting. What primarily characterises the Diaspora is apparently its great capacity to organise itself in any economical, political, social or cultural environment. The capacity if its economic and administrative elites had been the determining factor of their development. However, the existence of informal and trans-national networks can also help the development of criminal activities. The presence of mafia groups and gangs of Chinese origin and their collusion with the world of finance and politics are historical facts in the region and could represent today a real threat for its stability. These criminal networks tend to forge business link with their Japanese, Russian, Korea, Italian or South American counterparts and sometimes could interfere with the process of political decision making.

Cette étude porte sur les orientations d’acculturation des Québécois francophones à l’égard des immigrants italiens « valorisés » et des immigrants mafieux « dévalorisés ». Un groupe d’étudiants québécois francophones (N = 217) a complété l’Échelle d’Acculturation de la Communauté d’Accueil (ÉACA) envers ces deux groupes cibles. Les résultats ont démontré que les répondants endossaient l’intégrationnisme, l’intégrationnisme de transformation, l’individualisme et le ségrégationnisme davantage envers les Italiens qu’envers les mafieux. En revanche, ils endossaient davantage l’assimilationnisme et l’exclusionnisme envers les mafieux qu’envers les Italiens, soutenant ainsi l’hypothèse que les Québécois francophones distinguent bien les Italiens « valorisés » des Italiens mafieux « dévalorisés » plutôt que de faire l’amalgame de ces deux groupes., This study surveyed the acculturation orientations of Quebec Francophones towards ‘valued’ Italian immigrants and ‘devalued’ Italians involved in the mafia. Quebec Francophone undergraduates (N = 217) completed the Host community acculturation Scale (HCAS) towards the two target groups. Results showed that respondents more strongly endorsed integrationism, integration-transformation, individualism and segregationism towards Italians than towards devalued Italian mafiosi. Conversely, Quebecois Francophones more strongly endorsed assimilationism and exclusionism towards Italian Mafiosi than towards valued Italians, thus supporting the hypothesis that Quebec Francophones distinguished between ‘valued’ and ‘devalued’ Italians as opposed to treating Italians as all the same.

This issue of the Cahiers d'Études Romanes will only deal with the reality of organised crime in the Romance countries, and does not pretend to give an overview of the influence and global development of organised crime. The project of the editors of this issue has been rather to collect a series of studies on the literary and visual representations of this scourge in Italy and in Latin American countries. There are already a number of researchers, centres and associations dealing with the "criminal question", and the studies published in this issue are part of this tradition. The journal team has deliberately focused on representations of organised crime, systematically excluding accounts of organisations labelled as terrorists, except where unavoidable in view of the overlap between crime and terrorism in some countries., Ce numéro des Cahiers d’Études Romanes ne s’occupera qu’en filigrane de la réalité du crime organisé dans les pays de langue romane, et ne prétend pas non plus donner un aperçu de l’influence et du développement global du crime organisé. Le projet des responsables de ce numéro a été plutôt celui de recueillir une série d’études sur les représentations littéraires et visuelles de ce fléau en Italie et dans les pays d’Amérique Latine. Il existe déjà nombre de chercheurs, de centres et d’associations qui s’occupent de la « question criminelle », et les études publiées dans ce numéro s’inscrivent dans cette tradition 5. L’équipe de la revue a délibérément focalisé son attention sur les représentations du crime organisé en écartant systématiquement les récits concernant les organisations qualifiées de terroristes, sauf là où il était inévitable au vu de l’imbrication entre crime et terrorisme dans certains pays.
