As evidenced in the literature, music has accompanied the human being for millennia, in different situations, emotions and activities. In addition, not only does it allow expressions of internal personal states and feelings, but it can also produce many positive effects in those who practice it. Various authors have explored these benefits that musical activity brings, mainly in children. They highlight positive aspects of learning music in different areas of knowledge, in school performance and even improvements in the IQ of infants. However, despite the large number of studies regarding the benefits of music in children and the different nascent teaching alternatives, in Colombia the situation continues to be dramatic in terms of the incorporation of musical activity in the school curriculum. The foregoing added to political factors, teaching spaces and teacher training. In this way, the present work offers a new musical learning alternative, aimed at children from 7 to 11 years old, through a musical software focused on the initial teaching of the instrumental keyboard. It is important to mention that the software has a feedback system based on decision trees, which allows reinforcing the topics covered in the application. Finally, a comparative analysis is presented between teaching using the software and traditional teaching with the book, through an Investigation-Action carried out over six days with two students from a public school in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. This Investigation-Action allowed to observe positive results based on the comments and performance of the participants, which opens a great possibility for the subsequent scaling of this application. The water scarcity is a concern of the agricultural industry as it uses four fifths of the of the total fresh water consumed for irrigation and two thirds of the total used for human consumption. For this reason, the development of systems that optimize the use of water in irrigation is essential. In the greenhouses of the UEB "Valle del Yabú" of the Santa Clara municipality, irrigation is carried out using a drip-based system that requires the presence of an operator for decisionmaking who does not have information about some of the hydrometeorological variables that govern the crop. This paper focused on to design a support system for decision-making in irrigation based on machine learning. As an important parameter of the system, the evapotranspiration coefficient of the crop is calculated using the Turc formula. The collected environmental data is conditioned and linear regression, regressive random forests, and gradient-boosted trees regression models are trained with them to determine future evapotranspiration values using the Apache Spark framework. The model that obtained the best results was the regressive random forest with a coefficient of determination (r2) of 0,79 and with it the volume of water lost by the crop is calculated. Over the last decade, optimization of a massive set of industrial tasks has been achieved by taking advantage of repeatability and precision of robotic arms. While the new era of robotic arms introduces high-tech tools to fix positioning and tracking issues, upgrading older units is a significant challenge due to hardware incompatibilities, outdated mechanisms, and operation restrictions. This work introduces a new visual system to determine the position of a robotic arm using a two-stereo-cameras array. The visual-positioning system estimates the position of the end-effector using an inverse model of the robot and the full point cloud acquired with the stereo cameras. An Iterative Point Cloud algorithm merges the partial point clouds of each depth sensor, and with a yellow color detector, the algorithm extracts the Region of Interest (ROI). Experimental results show that the proposed device can estimate the relative position of the end-effector with respect to the robotic arm base with errors in the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical positions of around 19.6%, 15.7% and 9.2%, respectively. Social media have established a new way of communicating and understanding social relationships. At the same time, there are downsides, especially, their use of algorithms that have been built and developed under their umbrella and their potential to alter public opinion. This paper tries to analyse the YouTube recommendation system from the perspectives of reverse engineering and semantic mining. The first result is that, contrary to expectations, the issues do not tend to be extreme from the point of view of polarisation in all cases. Next, and through the study of the selected themes, the results do not offer a clear answer to the proposed hypotheses, since, as has been shown in similar works, the factors that shape the recommendation system are very diverse. In fact, results show that polarising content does not behave in the same way for all the topics analysed, which may indicate the existence of moderators –or corporate actions– that alter the relationship between the variables. Another contribution is the confirmation that we are dealing with non-linear, but potentially systematic, processes. This document presents an approach to help visually impaired people find the closest-to-user traversable region in a point cloud. Our work aims to reduce the processing time of this task. The proposed approach uses a convolutional neural network to segment floor regions in the point cloud and criteria to determine which of these regions are traversable based on their size and position. We design the convolutional neural network to classify patches, allowing the floor to be searched at selected locations in the point cloud. We find that by searching only in the lower section of the point cloud, the processing time is reduced while the closest-to-user traversable region to the user is located. We evaluate our work using NYU-v2 dataset and determine that it has better balance between accuracy and processing time than similar works. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When using climate data, researchers have difficulty determining the clustering algorithm and the best performing parameters for processing a specific dataset. We evaluated of the following unsupervised machine learning algorithms: K-means, K-medoids and Linkage-complete, which are applied to three datasets with climatological variables (temperature, rainfall, relative humidity, and solar radiation) for three meteorological stations located in the department of Caldas, Colombia, at different heights above sea level. Five scenarios are defined for 2, 3, and 5 clusters for each of the two partitioned algorithms, and five scenarios for the hierarchical algorithm, in each one of the meteorological stations. Different quantities and groupings of variables are applied for the different scenarios by using Euclidean distance. Davis-Bouldin is the applied method of quality evaluation of clusters. Normalization with techniques such as range-transformation and Z-transformation, as well as some iterations of the algorithm and reduction of dimensionality with PCA. In addition, the computational cost is evaluated. This study can guide researchers on certain decisions in cluster analysis used in meteorological data, as well as identify the most important algorithm and parameters to take into consideration for the best performance, according to particular conditions and requirements. Population ageing is considered to be one of the most significant social phenomena that is transforming economies and societies around the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ageing is on the rise. In Colombia, demographic growth exhibits a natural increase, which shows a notable difference between birth and general mortality rates. According to DANE, in Colombia, natural growth rates denote a precipitous decline over time. The Central and local governments can help with decision-making in order to establish sexual and reproductive health policies. Machine Learning (ML) therefore appears as a support tool, in which there are algorithms that allow creating models to learn from data and identify patterns that aid in supporting government entities in the decision-making process. Based on the above, this work proposes a method for ensemble ML algorithms, which supports decision-making regarding demographic control focused on birth. The prediction method made it possible to show that the decrease in births in Colombia in recent years is due to the change in the priorities of women and men. Women face discrimination and difficulty in accessing and staying in employment due to maternity. Consequently, it is difficult for them to articulate their professional life with the job market. This article presents an Internet data analysis model based on Web Mining with the aim to find knowledge about large amounts of data in cyberspace. To test the proposed method, suicide web pages were analyzed as a study case to identify and detect traits in students with suicidal tendencies. The procedure considers a Web Scraper to locate and download information from the Internet, as well as Natural Language Processing techniques to retrieve the words. To explore the information, a dataset based on Dynamic Tables and Semantic Ontologies was constructed, specifying the predictive variables in young people with suicidal inclination. Finally, to evaluate the efficiency of the model, Machine Learning and Deep Learning algorithms were used. It should be noticed that the procedures for the construction of the dataset (using Genetic Algorithms) and obtaining the knowledge (using Parallel Computing and Acceleration with GPU) were optimized. The results reveal an accuracy of 96.28% on the detection of characteristics in adolescents with suicidal tendencies, reaching the best result through a Recurrent Neural Network with 98% accuracy. It is inferred that the model is viable to establish bases on mechanisms of action and prevention of suicidal behaviors, which can be implemented in educational institutions or different social actors. Las entidades fiscalizadoras superiores, y en específico su ente rector, la Organización Internacional de las Entidades Fiscalizadoras Superiores (INTOSAI), han impulsado en los últimos cuatro años iniciativas encaminadas al uso de tecnologías y métodos para sus procesos de vigilancia y fiscalización que sean replicables y que generen resultados tangibles en el contexto fiscal. En este sentido, la Contraloría General de la República de Colombia viene fortaleciendo su infraestructura tecnológica y capacidades técnicas con mirar a mejorar y optimizar sus esfuerzos en cuanto a la vigilancia de los recursos de los colombianos. Aunque dicha tarea no es sencilla, esta entidad ha logrado detectar patrones de aquellos contratistas que acaparan la contratación estatal, logrando estar en diferentes sectores económicos sin tener probablemente la competencia técnica para cumplir el objeto contractual estipulado. A estos se les conoce en el ámbito de la Contraloría General como contratistas “multiobjeto”. En el presente artículo se muestra la construcción de un conjunto de datos de 1.998 registros etiquetado por expertos, que corresponden a contratos del sector educativo en Colombia. Con este instrumento se llevó a cabo el entrenamiento y las pruebas sobre un clasificador automático construido para los objetos contractuales a fin de detectar presuntos contratistas “multiobjeto”. Adicionalmente, se encontró que el mejor algoritmo de clasificación fue “Máquina de Soporte Vectorial Lineal”, con una exactitud de 84 %, el cual permitió finalmente listar por agrupamiento los presuntos contratistas de este tipo.

The prediction of soil properties through spectral information is widely discussed in the current scientific literature. The objective of this review was to find algorithms with the highest predictive potential for soil physicochemical properties based on spectral information captured with different instruments. A systematic review was carried out in which 121 articles were found, and 19 of them were chosen which met a determination coefficient greater than 0.80 or a root mean square error close to 0. It was determined that the most used spectral range corresponds to the range from 350 to 2500 nm; the partial least squares, support vector machine, and adjusted support vector machine algorithms are suitable for predicting pH, organic matter, and organic carbon. Furthermore, linear regression is only effective in predicting calcium carbonate, organic matter, moisture, and water content using individual bands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Automatic recognition of human activities is an important task in computer vision applications. Robust approaches using one or more sensors generally link redundant features that consume computing resources and computation time during the sub-activity classification process. This article explores dimension reduction for recognizing human activities and primitive movements by merging data from Kinect visual depth sensors, IMUs inertial sensors, and electrodes of electromyographic record (EMGs). It shows a comparative study where the different techniques of reduction of state of the art are evaluated characteristics; behavior is analyzed based on performance in recognition of activities and computation time of the methods under study. The results show that state-of-the-art methodologies could have a lower temporary cost when implementing them without significantly affecting performance when recognizing the activity. This article explains the design and simulation of a controller based on neural networks to regulate the output voltage of a flyback converter. Neural networks are used since they do not require a mathematical model of the converter, with the advantage of a greater operating range than traditional control methods. In the training process, changes were made in the database and in the neural network architecture to get a more appropriate controller that the guaranteed line and load regulation of the converter. The functional neural controller validation was made on Simulink with the circuital model of a flyback converter, putting it to changes of output load and input voltage. The results obtained show the effectiveness of neuronal control with its ability to regulate lines in a range of 20V to 50V, load regulation between 8Ω and 12Ω, and whose architecture is made up of four neurons. Introduction--The use of coherent detection jointly with high-level modulation formats such as 16 and 64-QAM seems to be a convenient strategy to increment capacity of future optical access networks. However, coherent detection requires high complexity digital signal processing to mitigate different impairments. Objective--Mitigate signal distortions using nonsymmetrical demodulation techniques based on Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. Methodology--First, a single channel Nyquist m-QAM system at 28 and 32 Gbps was simulated in VPIDesignSuite software. Then, different signals modulated at 16 and 64-QAM were generated with different laser linewidth, transmission distances and launch powers. Two ML algorithms were implemented to carry out the demodulation of the generated signals. The performance of the algorithms was evaluated using the Bit Error Rate (BER) in terms of different system parameters as laser linewidth, transmission distance, launch power and modulation format. Results--The use of ML allowed gains up to 2 dB in terms of optical signal-to-noise ratio at a BER value of for 16-QAM and 1.5 dB for 64-QAM. Also, the use of ML showed that it is possible to use a lower cost laser (100 kHz linewidth vs 25 kHz) with a better BER performance than using conventional demodulation. Conclusions--We showed that the use of both algorithms could mitigate nonlinear effects and could reduce computational complexity for future optical access networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents an exciting application of machine learning for loan origination in microfinance. Microfinance targets people who cannot build a credit history and therefore cannot access loans from banks or other financial institutions. We use data from a Mexican microfinance company that operates in several regions throughout the country. The objective is to guide intermediate lenders to choose their clients and achieve a lowerr credit default risk. We use several statistical models such as principal component analysis, clustering analysis and a regression tree. In recent years, new trends and methodologies have emerged that greatly favor the education sector. E-learning as an alternative to regular teaching and learning processes has transformed the educational dynamics thanks to the inclusion of MOOCs, personal learning environments, allowing the educational process to be carried out at a personalized level where the focus is on learning styles and the profile of the student. This article presents a review of current works around machine learning mechanisms to make recommendations in the educational environment, where it is found that besides the discovery of the student's learning style, it is important to know their level of knowledge and learning speed, in addition to the tools used by the student to carry out their studies. Supreme audit institutions, and specifically its governing body, the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (intosai), have promoted during the last four years a series of initiatives in the fiscal context aimed at the use of technologies and methods that are replicable and generate tangible results, thus reinforcing the surveillance and auditing processes carried out by supreme audit institutions. In this sense, the Comptroller General of the Republic of Colombia has been strengthening its technological infrastructure and technical capacities in order to improve and optimize its efforts in the monitoring of the resources of Colombian citizens. Although this task is not an easy one, this entity has managed to detect patterns of contractors who monopolize state contracting and are inserted into different economic sectors, without probably having the technical competence to fulfill stipulated contractual deeds. These subjects are known in the field of the General Comptroller's office as "multi-object" contractors. This article explains the construction of a data set of 1,998 records labeled by experts that correspond to education sector contracts. Training and tests were carried out with this tool on an automatic classifier built for the contractual objects in order to detect suspected "multi-object" contractors. It was found that the best classification algorithm was the "Linear Vector Support Machine," with an accuracy of 84%, which will eventually find presumed multi-object contractors by grouping. Density Classification Task (DCT) is a well-known problem, where the main goal is to build a cellular automaton whose local rule gives rise to emergent global coordination. We describe the methods used to identify new cellular automata that solve this problem. Our approach identifies both the neighborhood and its stochastic rule using a dataset of initial configurations that covers in a predefined way the full range of densities in DCT. We compare our results with some models currently available in the field. In some cases, our models show better performance than the best solution reported in the literature, with efficacy of 0.842 for datasets with uniform distribution around the critical density. Tests were carried out in datasets of diverse lattice sizes and sampling conditions. Finally, by a statistical non-parametric test, we demonstrate that there are no significant differences between our identified cellular automata and the best-known model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nowadays, artificial neural networks and deep learning, are two of the most powerful machine learning tools, which aim to develop systems that learn automatically, recognize patterns, predict behaviors and generalize information from data sets. These two tools have become a potential field of research with applications to engineering, with biomedical engineering not being the exception. This article presents an updated review of the main applications of neural networks and deep learning in the areas of omics, imaging, brain-machine and body-machine interfaces, and the management and administration of public health; these areas extend from the study of processes at molecular level, to processes that involve large populations. O algoritmo CART tem sido aplicado de forma extensiva em estudos preditivos. Porém, pesquisadores argumentam que o CART apresenta sério viés seletivo. Esse viés aparece na preferência do CART pelos preditores com grande número de categorias. Este artigo considera esse problema e compara os algoritmos CART e CTREE, este considerado não enviesado, tomando como resultado seu poder preditivo. Os algoritmos foram aplicados no Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio de 2011, no qual estão incluídos vários preditores nominais e ordinais com muitas categorias, o que pode produzir um viés seletivo. Foram geradas uma árvore do CTREE e outra do CART, ambas com 16 folhas, provenientes de um modelo com 53 variáveis preditoras e a nota da redação, como desfecho. A árvore do algoritmo CART apresentou uma melhor predição. Para grandes bancos de dados, possivelmente o algoritmo CART é mais indicado do que o algoritmo CTREE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a process of semi-automatic systematic reviews in scientific research. On the one hand, it is presented a software prototype based on artificial intelligence, semi-automatic systematic reviews tool. On the other hand, a study case of a phd thesis project shows the maps and information with aggregate value. In addition, the software prototype were evaluated by 40 students of master and Ph.D projects, they report the utility of the software tool by a survey. This work presents the modules and functionalities, software architecture and software deployment. Furthermore, a comparative study of a set of similar software tools has been conducted according to the following criteria: input files, analysis and mapping, and software license. Finally, it is discussed the results of the comparative study, the implementation of artificial intelligence techniques, the software scalability and the easiness of include new analysis and maps. In Nowadays, Power Quality (PQ) events have been studied because they represent an essential aspect for the industries concerning the efficiency and the useful life of the elements connected to electrical systems. If the disturbances related to PQ events are classified (identified) fast and with reliable accuracy, the costs and losses generated would be reduced. In this paper, we present a machine learning-based approach to identify PQ events. Our proposal comprises the following stages: we employ a feature representation space based on time and frequency parameters. Besides, we include a supervised relevance analysis technique, called Relieff, to highlight the discriminant capability of the considered features. Then, we evaluate the success of classifying PQ events with different classifiers by adding different levels of noise under a cross-validation scheme. For concrete testing, a synthetic database based on the IEEE 1159 standard is generated, considering 3000 signals and ten classes (300 samples per class). Remarkably, obtained results show a suitable classification performance holding straightforward classifiers, e.g., quadratic and k-NN, in comparison to those stateof- the-art methodologies. With the widespread of modern technologies and social media networks, a new form of bullying occurring anytime and anywhere has emerged. This new phenomenon, known as cyberaggression or cyberbullying, refers to aggressive and intentional acts aiming at repeatedly causing harm to other person involving rude, insulting, offensive, teasing or demoralising comments through online social media. As these aggressions represent a threatening experience to Internet users, especially kids and teens who are still shaping their identities, social relations and well-being, it is crucial to understand how cyberbullying occurs to prevent it from escalating. Considering the massive information on the Web, the developing of intelligent techniques for automatically detecting harmful content is gaining importance, allowing the monitoring of large-scale social media and the early detection of unwanted and aggressive situations. Even though several approaches have been developed over the last few years based both on traditional and deep learning techniques, several concerns arise over the duplication of research and the difficulty of comparing results. Moreover, there is no agreement regarding neither which type of technique is better suited for the task, nor the type of features in which learning should be based. The goal of this work is to shed some light on the effects of learning paradigms and feature engineering approaches for detecting aggressions in social media texts. This paper presents a new methodology based on the application of Support Vector Machine algorithms, Naïve Bayes and Genetic Algorithms in diagnostics of psychosocial evaluations for the identification and prediction of the psychosocial risk level of public-school teachers in Colombia. A comparative study of the model of machine learning for prediction was carried out: Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Naïve Bayes, in two stages, first with all the variables and second, reducing the dimensionality of the database applying genetic algorithms, The best forty variables with the best efficiency in prediction accuracy were selected. The database used consisted of 3000 epidemiological records, which corresponded to teachers from public schools in the metropolitan area of a Colombian city. The use of SVM easily detected variables of physiological type and the best prediction performance was obtained with accuracy of 96.3%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
