This paper addresses the challenges of calibrating low-cost electrochemical sensor systems for air quality monitoring. The proliferation of pollutants in the atmosphere necessitates efficient monitoring systems, and low-cost sensors offer a promising solution. However, issues such as drift, cross-sensitivity, and inter-unit consistency have raised concerns about their accuracy and reliability. The study explores the following three calibration methods for converting sensor signals to concentration measurements: utilizing manufacturer-provided equations, incorporating machine learning (ML) algorithms, and directly applying ML to voltage signals. Experiments were performed in three urban sites in Greece. High-end instrumentation provided the reference concentrations for training and evaluation of the model. The results reveal that utilizing voltage signals instead of the manufacturer's calibration equations diminishes variability among identical sensors. Moreover, the latter approach enhances calibration efficiency for CO, NO, NO2, and O3 sensors while incorporating voltage signals from all sensors in the ML algorithm, taking advantage of cross-sensitivity to improve calibration performance. The study investigates the efficiency of integrating Machine Learning (ML) in clinical practice for diagnosing solitary pulmonary nodules' (SPN) malignancy. Patient data had been recorded in the Department of Nuclear Medicine, University Hospital of Patras, in Greece. A dataset comprising 456 SPN characteristics extracted from CT scans, the SUVmax score from the PET examination, and the ultimate outcome (benign/malignant), determined by patient follow-up or biopsy, was used to build the ML classifier. Two medical experts provided their malignancy likelihood scores, taking into account the patient's clinical condition and without prior knowledge of the true label of the SPN. Incorporating human assessments into ML model training improved diagnostic efficiency by approximately 3%, highlighting the synergistic role of human judgment alongside ML. Under the latter setup, the ML model had an accuracy score of 95.39% (CI 95%: 95.29–95.49%). While ML exhibited swings in probability scores, human readers excelled in discerning ambiguous cases. ML outperformed the best human reader in challenging instances, particularly in SPNs with ambiguous probability grades, showcasing its utility in diagnostic grey zones. The best human reader reached an accuracy of 80% in the grey zone, whilst ML exhibited 89%. The findings underline the collaborative potential of ML and human expertise in enhancing SPN characterization accuracy and confidence, especially in cases where diagnostic certainty is elusive. This study contributes to understanding how integrating ML and human judgement can optimize SPN diagnostic outcomes, ultimately advancing clinical decision-making in PET/CT screenings. Fruit quality is a critical factor in the produce industry, affecting producers, distributors, consumers, and the economy. High-quality fruits are more appealing, nutritious, and safe, boosting consumer satisfaction and revenue for producers. Artificial intelligence can aid in assessing the quality of fruit using images. This paper presents a general machine learning model for assessing fruit quality using deep image features. This model leverages the learning capabilities of the recent successful networks for image classification called vision transformers (ViT). The ViT model is built and trained with a combination of various fruit datasets and taught to distinguish between good and rotten fruit images based on their visual appearance and not predefined quality attributes. The general model demonstrated impressive results in accurately identifying the quality of various fruits, such as apples (with a 99.50% accuracy), cucumbers (99%), grapes (100%), kakis (99.50%), oranges (99.50%), papayas (98%), peaches (98%), tomatoes (99.50%), and watermelons (98%). Featured Application: An explainable computer-aided diagnosis system for cardiovascular diseases can be a valuable tool for primary health care. Medical experts can utilize such tools to pinpoint unhealthy patients accurately and early, hence decongesting the National Healthcare Service (NHS). In recent times, coronary artery disease (CAD) prediction and diagnosis have been the subject of many Medical decision support systems (MDSS) that make use of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms. The common ground of most of these applications is that they function as black boxes. They reach a conclusion/diagnosis using multiple features as input; however, the user is oftentimes oblivious to the prediction process and the feature weights leading to the eventual prediction. The primary objective of this study is to enhance the transparency and comprehensibility of a black-box prediction model designed for CAD. The dataset employed in this research comprises biometric and clinical information obtained from 571 patients, encompassing 21 different features. Among the instances, 43% of cases of CAD were confirmed through invasive coronary angiography (ICA). Furthermore, a prediction model utilizing the aforementioned dataset and the CatBoost algorithm is analyzed to highlight its prediction making process and the significance of each input datum. State-of-the-art explainability mechanics are employed to highlight the significance of each feature, and common patterns and differences with the medical bibliography are then discussed. Moreover, the findings are compared with common risk factors for CAD, to offer an evaluation of the prediction process from the medical expert's point of view. By depicting how the algorithm weights the information contained in features, we shed light on the black-box mechanics of ML prediction models; by analyzing the findings, we explore their validity in accordance with the medical literature on the matter. The main goal driving this work is to develop computer-aided classification models relying on clinical data to identify coronary artery disease (CAD) instances with high accuracy while incorporating the expert's opinion as input, making it a "man-in-the-loop" approach. CAD is traditionally diagnosed in a definite manner by Invasive Coronary Angiography (ICA). A dataset was created using biometric and clinical data from 571 patients (21 total features, 43% ICA-confirmed CAD instances) along with the expert's diagnostic yield. Five machine learning classification algorithms were applied to the dataset. For the selection of the best feature set for each algorithm, three different parameter selection algorithms were used. Each ML model's performance was evaluated using common metrics, and the best resulting feature set for each is presented. A stratified ten-fold validation was used for the performance evaluation. This procedure was run both using the assessments of experts/doctors as input and without them. The significance of this paper lies in its innovative approach of incorporating the expert's opinion as input in the classification process, making it a "man-in-the-loop" approach. This approach not only increases the accuracy of the models but also provides an added layer of explainability and transparency, allowing for greater trust and confidence in the results. Maximum achievable accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity are 83.02%, 90.32%, and 85.49% when using the expert's diagnosis as input, compared to 78.29%, 76.61%, and 86.07% without the expert's diagnosis. The results of this study demonstrate the potential for this approach to improve the diagnosis of CAD and highlight the importance of considering the role of human expertise in the development of computer-aided classification models. Currently, artificial intelligence is facing several problems with its practical implementation in various application domains. The explainability of advanced artificial intelligence algorithms is a topic of paramount importance, and many discussions have been held recently. Pioneering and classical machine learning and deep learning models behave as black boxes, constraining the logical interpretations that the end users desire. Artificial intelligence applications in industry, medicine, agriculture, and social sciences require the users' trust in the systems. Users are always entitled to know why and how each method has made a decision and which factors play a critical role. Otherwise, they will always be wary of using new techniques. This paper discusses the nature of fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs), a soft computational method to model human knowledge and provide decisions handling uncertainty. Though FCMs are not new to the field, they are evolving and incorporate recent advancements in artificial intelligence, such as learning algorithms and convolutional neural networks. The nature of FCMs reveals their supremacy in transparency, interpretability, transferability, and other aspects of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methods. The present study aims to reveal and defend the explainability properties of FCMs and to highlight their successful implementation in many domains. Subsequently, the present study discusses how FCMs cope with XAI directions and presents critical examples from the literature that demonstrate their superiority. The study results demonstrate that FCMs are both in accordance with the XAI directives and have many successful applications in domains such as medical decision-support systems, precision agriculture, energy savings, environmental monitoring, and policy-making for the public sector. Field calibration of low-cost air quality (AQ) monitoring sensors is essential for their successful operation. Low-cost sensors often exhibit non-linear responses to air pollutants and their signals may be affected by the presence of multiple compounds making their calibration challenging. We investigate different approaches for the field calibration of an AQ monitoring device named ENSENSIA, developed in the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences in Greece. The present study focuses on the measurements of two of the most important pollutants measured by ENSENSIA: NO2 and O3. The measurement site is located in the center of Patras, the third biggest city in Greece. Reference instrumentation used for regulatory purposes by the Region of Western Greece was used as the evaluation standard. The sensors were installed for two years at the same locations. Measurements from the first year (2021) from seven ENSENSIA sensors (NO2, NO, O3, CO, PM2.5, temperature and relative humidity) were used to train several Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) algorithms. The resulting calibration algorithms were assessed using data from the second year (2022). The Random Forest algorithm exhibited the best performance in correcting O3 and NO2. For NO2 the mean error was reduced from 9.4 ppb to 3 ppb, whilst R2 improved from 0.22 to 0.86. Similar results were obtained for O3, wherein the mean error was reduced from 13 to 4.3 ppb and R2 increased from 0.52 to 0.69. Background: Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, and specifically Deep Learning (DL) methods, demonstrate substantial performance in detecting and classifying medical images. Recent clinical studies have reported novel optical technologies which enhance the localization or assess the viability of Parathyroid Glands (PG) during surgery, or preoperatively. These technologies could become complementary to the surgeon's eyes and may improve surgical outcomes in thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy. Methods: The study explores and reports the use of AI methods for identifying and localizing PGs, Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), Parathyroid Adenoma (PTA), and Multiglandular Disease (MGD). Results: The review identified 13 publications that employ Machine Learning and DL methods for preoperative and operative implementations. Conclusions: AI can aid in PG, PHPT, PTA, and MGD detection, as well as PG abnormality discrimination, both during surgery and non-invasively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present research investigates Machine Learning and Deep Learning methods in competing with the medical experts' diagnostic yield. Although the highly accurate detection of Coronary Artery Disease, even from the experts, is presently implausible, developing Artificial Intelligence models to compete with the human eye and expertise is the first step towards a state-of-the-art Computer-Aided Diagnostic system. A set of 566 patient samples is analysed. The dataset contains Polar Maps derived from scintigraphic Myocardial Perfusion Imaging studies, clinical data, and Coronary Angiography results. The latter is considered as reference standard. For the classification of the medical images, the InceptionV3 Convolutional Neural Network is employed, while, for the categorical and continuous features, Neural Networks and Random Forest classifier are proposed. The research suggests that an optimal strategy competing with the medical expert's accuracy involves a hybrid multi-input network composed of InceptionV3 and a Random Forest. This method matches the expert's accuracy, which is 79.15% in the particular dataset. Image classification using deep learning methods can cooperate with clinical data classification methods to enhance the robustness of the predicting model, aiming to compete with the medical expert's ability to identify Coronary Artery Disease subjects, from a large scale patient dataset. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and strokes produce immense health and economic burdens globally. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the most common type of cardiovascular disease. Coronary Angiography, which is an invasive approach for detection and treatment, is also the standard procedure for diagnosing CAD. In this work, we illustrate a Medical Decision Support System for the prediction of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM). FCMs are a promising modeling methodology, based on human knowledge, capable of dealing with ambiguity and uncertainty and learning how to adapt to the unknown or changing environment. The newly proposed MDSS is developed using the basic notions of Fuzzy Cognitive Maps and is intended to diagnose CAD utilizing specific inputs related to the patient's clinical conditions. We show that the proposed model, when tested on a dataset collected from the Laboratory of Nuclear Medicine of the University Hospital of Patras achieves accuracy of 78.2% outmatching several state-of-the-art classification algorithms.
