A literary criticism of William Shakespeare's play "Macbeth" is presented. Topics discussed include the portrayal of self-deception in the tragedy based on the self-deception theory of philosopher Alfred Mele, personal beliefs which tend to result to self-deception such as the response of the title character Macbeth to the sayings and prophecies told by witches in the play, and the possible psychological explanation for the appearance of witches at the beginning of "Macbeth."
