Although ambient air pollution has been linked to reduced lung function in healthy students, longitudinal studies that compare the response of asthmatic and healthy adolescents are lacking. To evaluate lung function responses to short-term ambient air particulate matter (PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and PM 1 ) levels, we conducted a study on high school students aged 15-18 years. The aim of this study was to assess effects of acute exposure to ambient air particulate matter (PM) on lung function in healthy and asthmatic late adolescents. We examined associations of lung function indices and ambient PM levels in 23 asthmatic and 23 healthy students. Paired-samples T test was used to evaluate the association of exposure to airborne PM concentrations with lung function test results (FVC, FEV 1 , FEV 1 /FVC, and FEF 25-75 ). We observed negative impact of exposure to an increased concentration of ambient air PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and PM 1 on lung function parameters of asthmatic and healthy late adolescents. These findings are consistent with other similar short-term studies which have confirmed the adverse effect of PM air pollution. These associations were stronger in asthmatic subjects compared with those in healthy ones. There are significant adverse effects of ambient air PM on pulmonary function of adolescents, especially asthmatics.

Introduction: Little is known about the relationship between health status and pulmonary artery diameter in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate correlation between pulmonary artery-aorta ratio (P-A ratio) and health status of the individuals, using COPD assessment test (CAT)., Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 112 COPD patients were recruited. The severity of COPD was determined by global initiative for obstructive lung disease (GOLD). After digital chest CT scan, the P-A ratio was measured at the level of bifurcation and compared with CAT score, GOLD stage, exacerbation rate and Modified Medical Research Council (MMRC) score., Results: The average P-A ratio was 0.89 ± 0.16 and 62.5% of patients had ratio less than one. The P-A ratio correlates significantly with different GOLD stages, CAT score and MMRC score (P < .001, P < .001, P < .001, respectively). Compared patients with low P-A ratio (<1), those with high P-A ratio (≥ 1) showed higher CAT score [11.94 ± 5.94 vs 25.17 ± 5.84] (P < .001). The P-A ratio was significantly higher in frequent (≥2) comparing low (<2) exacerbations [1.07 ± 0.07 vs 0.77 ± 0.06] (P < .001)., Conclusion: Significant correlations were found between P-A ratio and GOLD, exacerbation rate and health status, using CAT of patients with COPD. End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is a complex illness that involves different organs including the lungs. We studied the pulmonary function tests, arterial blood gases (ABG) and plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels to check whether there is any change in their levels after hemodialysis (HD) in patients with ESRD. In this cross-sectional study (from July 2009 to April 2010), 20 patients with ESRD were evaluated. ABG, spirometric parameters and plasma ET-1 were measured before and after HD in these patients. Student's t-test was performed to clarify the differences and Pearson's test was used for correlations. P <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Significant reduction was seen in oxygen saturation (O₂sat), partial pressure of carbon-dioxide (PaCO₂) and oxygen (PaO₂) after a HD session (P <0.001). Also, improvement was seen in all spirometric parameters except forced expiratory volume (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) after HD. Plasma ET-1 levels decreased significantly after HD. Mean ET-1 before HD was 6.88 + 5.81 pg/mL while it was 3.91 + 2.76 pg/mL after HD (P = 0.009). Based on the plasma levels of ET-1, the patients were divided into two groups. The mean level of ET-1 was higher in the first group. Significant increase was seen in spirometric parameters in the second group. Our study suggests that, in patients with ESRD, plasma ET-1 level is higher than in the normal population, and this is closely related to deterioration of pulmonary function tests. Significant reduction of plasma ET-1 may be an important factor in the improvement of spiro-metry parameters after HD.

Ever since it was first used in armed conflict, mustard gas (sulfur mustard, MG) has been known to cause a wide range of acute and chronic injuries to exposure victims. The earliest descriptions of these injuries were published during and in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, and a further series of accounts followed the Second World War. More recently, MG has been deployed in warfare in the Middle East and this resulted in large numbers of victims, whose conditions have been studied in detail at hospitals in the region. In this review, we bring together the older and more recent clinical studies on MG toxicity and summarize what is now known about the acute and chronic effects of the agent on the eyes, skin, respiratory tract and other physiological systems. In the majority of patients, the most clinically serious long-term consequences of MG poisoning are on the respiratory system, but the effects on the skin and other systems also have a significant impact on quality of life. The nitric-oxide pathway plays a crucial role in the pathogeneses of asthma and NOS3-encoded endothelial nitric oxide synthase is one of the main components of the pathway. Variants of NOS3 are known to contribute to asthma development and pathophysiology. We investigated the association of NOS3-c.894G/T (rs1799983) with asthma risk and severity by studying frequencies of its genotypes and alleles in 555 asthmatics (93 intermittent, 240 mild, 158 moderate, and 64 severe asthma cases) and 351 control participants using the PCR-FRLP method, logistic regression analysis and generalized ordered logit estimates. GT genotype (ORadj: 1.39; CI: 1.04–1.85; p = 0.026), dominant model GT + TT (ORadj: 1.41; CI: 1.07–1.87; p = 0.015), and T allele (ORadj: 1.32; CI: 1.05–1.67; p = 0.018) was associated with increased ORs in asthmatics. Also, the frequency of GT + TT (ORadj: 1.55; CI: 1.01–2.38; p = 0.044) was significantly higher in males. Furthermore, GT genotype (ORadj: 1.39; CI: 1.04–1.85; p = 0.024), GT + TT (ORadj: 1.42; CI: 1.07–1.87; p = 0.014), and T allele (ORadj: 1.32; CI: 1.05–1.66; p = 0.018) in total population and GT + TT (ORadj: 1.56; CI: 1.02–2.37; p = 0.04) in males were significantly associated with increased risk of severe, moderate, mild, intermittent asthma vs. controls. Also, GT genotype (ORadj: 1.39; CI: 1.02–1.91; p = 0.039) was significantly more frequent in severe, moderate grades vs. lower severity grades in the total population. Frequencies of GT genotype (ORadj: 1.77; CI: 1.05–3.00; p = 0.032) and GT + TT (ORadj: 1.74; CI: 1.04–2.90; p = 0.036) in total population and GT genotype (ORadj: 2.40; CI: 1.16–4.97; p = 0.018) and GT + TT (ORadj: 2.30; CI: 1.12–4.74; p = 0.023) in male subpopulation were significantly higher in severe cases compared to lower grades. The nitric oxide (NO) pathway contributes to the pathogeneses of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and asthma. NOS2 encodes inducible-NO synthase, which is an important enzyme of the pathway, and its variations could affect the risk of asthma and MetS and thereby co-susceptibility to them. This study aims to estimate the association of NOS2-c.1823C>T with risk of asthma, MetS, and asthma with MetS condition (ASMetS), and with asthma stages: intermittent, mild, moderate, and severe asthma. The study included asthmatics (n = 555), MetS (n = 334), and ASMetS cases (n = 232) and 351 controls, which were genotyped by the PCR-RFLP method. The T allele was significantly associated with an increased risk of asthma and MetS in the sample population and females. CT genotype and CT+TT model were significantly associated with increased risk of ASMetS in females. A significant association between CT genotype and increased risk of ASMetS in the sample population and females was found in ASMetS versus MetS. In the sample population and among females, the T allele was significantly associated with severe asthma. The rs2297518 single nucleotide polymorphism of NOS2 contributes to the risk of MetS, asthma, and co-susceptibility to them, and this contribution may be stronger in females compared to males. Objective: To study the effect of erythropoietin (EPO) treatment on renal and lung injury following renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). Materials and Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats were assigned to three groups of 10 rats each. The first group was sham-operated, the second was subjected to renal I/R (30 min of ischemia followed by 24 h of reperfusion). The third group was subjected to renal I/R and treated with EPO in two doses: the first dose 1 h prior to ischemia (1,000 U/kg) and the second dose 6 h after ischemia (1,000 U/kg). Results: The renal and lung tissue injury index, tissue serum blood urea nitrogen and creatinine (Cr) were higher in the renal I/R group compared to the renal I/R + EPO group; the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Kidney and lung tissue glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase levels were higher in the renal I/R + EPO group than the renal I/R group; the difference was also statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The data showed that EPO pretreatment could be effective in reducing renal and lung injury following renal I/R and could improve the cellular antioxidant defense system. Hence EPO pretreatment may be effective for attenuating renal and lung injury after renal I/R-induced injury during surgical procedures, hypotension, renal transplantation and other conditions inducing renal I/R.
