A brief summary of the principal science findings of the Magellan Mission and plans for future data acquisition are presented. This includes high resolution gravity data from a nearly circular orbit and atmospheric drag and occultation experiments.

Magellan radar data show the surface of Venus to contain a wide range of geologic features (large volcanoes, extensive rift valleys, etc.). Although networks of interconnecting zones of deformation are identified, a system of spreading ridges and subduction zones like those that dominate the tectonic style of the Earth do not appear to be present. In addition, the absence of a mantle low-viscosity zone suggests a strong link between mantle dynamics and the surface. As a natural follow-on to the Magellan mission, establishing a network of seismometers on Venus will provide detailed quantitative information on the large scale interior structure of the planet. When analyzed in conjunction with image, gravity, and topography information, these data will aid in constraining mechanisms that drive surface deformation.

Large centers of volcanism on Venus are concentrated primarily in the equatorial region of the planet and are associated with regional topographic rises. Analysis of both radar images and geophysical data suggest that these uplands are sites of mantle upwelling. Magellan radar imaging provides a globally contiguous data set from which the geology of these regions is evaluated and compared. In addition, high resolution gravity data currently being collected provide a basis to assess the relationship between these uplands and processes in the planet's interior. Studies of the geology of the three largest volcanic highlands (Beta Regio, Atla Regio, Western Eistla Regio) show them to be distinct, having a range of volcanic and tectonic characteristics. In addition to these large areas, a number of smaller uplands are identified and are being analyzed (Bell Regio, Imdr Regio, Dione Regio (Ushas, Innini, and Hathor Montes), and Themis Regio). To understand better the mechanisms by which these volcanic rises form and evolve, we assess their geologic and geophysical characteristics.

Magellan images are used to assess regional stratigraphic relationships in an attempt to establish the evolutionary history and characterize the styles of volcanism at Western Eistla Regio. The regional geologic characteristics of Beta Regio and Atla Regio, imaged by Magellan during the latter part of its first mapping cycle, are also assessed and compared to those of Western Eistla Regio so as to determine if all three of these areas evolved in a similar manner. The detailed characteristics of each region show them to be quite variable in the presence and distribution of coronae and tessera, suggesting that the detailed characteristics of the individual highlands are linked to the local geologic environment.

Magellan observations indicate that many venusian impact craters have associated surfaces, typically lower in backscatter and emissivity than the surroundings, that extend up to hundreds of kilometers to the west of craters, in parabolic planforms. During Magellan's second mapping cycle, a number of these parabolic features were imaged for a second time, under a different viewing geometry. In some cases, the SAR backscatter appearance of portions of the parabolic features was quite different in the two datasets. We present a description and preliminary interpretations of the anomalous appearance of these features as observed during Magellan's first and second mapping cycles.

Coronae on Venus are large, generally circular surface features that have distinctive tectonic, volcanic, and topographic expressions. They range in diameter from less than 200 km to at least 1000 km. Data from the Magellan spacecraft have now allowed complete global mapping of the spatial distribution of coronae on the planet. Unlike impact craters, which show a random (i.e., Poisson) spatial distribution, the distribution of coronae appears to be nonrandom. We investigate the distribution here in detail, and explore its implications in terms of mantle convection and surface modification processes.

Magellan has completed two mapping cycles around the planet Venus, returning high resolution synthetic aperture images and altimetry data of over 95 percent of the planet's surface. Venus is dominated by low lying volcanic plains with an impact crater population indicating an average surface age of about 500 million years. Highland regions either tend to be characterized by volcanic shield complexes and rifting or by complex ridged terrain. Successful as the primary mission of Magellan has been, significant scientific questions remain to be addressed with imaging and gravity data that will be collected over the next several years.

The geology of a portion of the equatorial region of Venus (1 deg S to 45 deg N and from 270 deg eastward to 30 deg) is assessed on the basis of new radar images obtained from the Arecibo Observatory. Nine geologic units are mapped on the basis of their radar characteristics, and their distribution and correspondences with topography are examined. Plains are the most abundant unit, comprising 80 percent of the area imaged, and are divided into bright, dark, and mottled. Mottled plains contain abundant lava flows and domes, suggesting that volcanism forming planes is a significant process in the equatorial region of Venus. Tesserae are found primarily on Beta Regio and its eastern flank and are interpreted to be locally stratigraphically older units, predating episodes of faulting and plains formation. On the basis of spatial and temporal relationships between geologic units, the highlands of Beta Regio and Western Eistla Regio are interpreted to have formed in association with areas of mantle upwelling which uplift plains, cause rifting, and, in the case of Beta Regio, disrupt a large region of tesserae.

Results of new radar images obtained from the Arecibo Observatory for portions of the southern hemisphere of Venus are reported. The images show that the upland of Phoebe Region contains the southern extension of Devana Chasma, a rift zone extending 4200 km south from Theia Mons and interpreted as a zone of extension. Alpha Regio, the only large region of tesserae within the imaged area, is found to be similar to tesserae mapped elsewhere on the planet; it covers a smaller percentage of the surface than that observed in the northern high latitudes. Themis Region is mapped as an ovoid chain of radar-bright arcuate single- and double-ring structures, edifices, and bright lineaments. On the basis of the present analysis, the southern hemisphere of Venus is interpreted to be characterized by regions of mantle upwelling on a variety of scales, upwelling and extension, and localized compression.

Arecibo radar images of a portion of the equatorial region of Venus provide the first high resolution (1.5- to 2.0-km) synoptic coverage of Beta Regio. Within this area, tessera, a complex deformed terrain, is identified as a major geologic unit with the largest region corresponding to a plateau on the east flank of the highland. Three models are proposed to explain the origin and evolution of Beta Regio and are identified as Mantle Plume/Passive Crust, Mantle Plume/Active Crust, and Mantle Plume/Crustal Spreading. The Mantle Plume/Passive Crust model appears to be the most consistent with the geology in this region and suggests that a plume disrupts a preexisting region of tessera.

Observations from approximately one-half of the Magellan nominal eight-month mission to map Venus are summarized. Preliminary compilation of initial geologic observations of the planet reveals a surface dominated by plains that are characterized by extensive and intensive volcanism and tectonic deformation. Four broad categories of units have been identified: plains units, linear belts, surficial units, and terrain units.

Venera 15/16 radar images of Venus show two circular features having no analog among the terrestrial planets: 21 coronae, which have a complex interior zone, and 11 corona-like features, which lack the ridge annuli of the coronae. Each of these two groups of features is subdivisible into three classes; coronae may be symmetrical, asymmetrical, and subdued, while corona-like structures are double, irregular, and heart-shaped. The various classes of both types of classes are interpreted as having a similar mode of origin, namely the uplift and volcanism generated by a thermal anomaly at depth, followed by gravitational relaxation.

The Venera 15/16 spacecraft revealed a number of features of unknown origin including coronae, elongate to circular structures with a complex interior surrounded by an annulus of concentric ridges. Eighteen coronae were identified in Venera 15/16 data of Venus; an additional thirteen possible coronae are found in Pioneer Venus and Arecibo data. Coronae, with maximum widths of 160 to over 650 km, are found primarily in two clusters in the Northern Hemisphere located to the east and west of Ishtar Terra. Another possible cluster is located in Themis Regio in the Southern Hemisphere. The majority of coronae are at least partially raised less than 1.5 km above the surrounding region, and over half are partially surrounded by a peripheral trough. A sequence of events for coronae has been determined through mapping. Prior to corona formation, regional compression or extension creates bands of lineaments along which coronae tend to later form. During the early stages of corona formation, relatively raised topography is produced by uplift and volcanic construction. The evolution of coronae and their general characteristics have been compared to two models of corona origin: hotspots and sinking mantle diapirs. In the hotspot or rising mantle diapir model, heating and melting at depth create uplift at the surface. Uplift is accompanied by central extension, facilitating volcanism. Gravitational relaxation of the uplifted region follows producing the compressional features within the annulus and the peripheral trough. Both models can predict the major characteristics and evolutionary sequence of coronae. The sinking diapir model does predict an early-time low and central compression as well as broadening and shallowing of the peripheral trough with time, all of which are not observed at current data resolution. In addition, the sinking mantle diapir mode predicts more simultaneous formation of the high topography, annulus and trough unlike the hotspot or rising mantle diapir mode. High resolution Magellan data will be used to distinguish between the two models of corona origin.

High-resolution high-incidence-angle Arecibo images and Pioneer-Venus data of Southern Ishtar Terra and the flanking plains of Guinevere and Sena on Venus are analyzed. The low predominantly volcanic plains of Guinevere and Sedna Planitae are the oldest of the mapped terrains. The complex tectonic deformation in the Southern Ishtar Transition Zone postdates much of the low plains, and delineates the steep-sloped flanks of Ishtar Terra. Lakshmi Planum is found to have a distinctive volcanic style, and to postdate the Southern Ishtar Transition Zone, at least in part. Data show relatively recent plains-style volcanism to have occurred locally in Sedna Planitae, and to embay the Southern Istar Transition Zone. Arecibo data show additional coronae in the lowlands, suggesting that corona formation may be a more widespread process than indicated by Venera 15/16 images.

Among the unanswered questions concerning Venus are the age of its surface and the mechanisms of lithospheric heat transfer (conduction, plate recycling, and hot spot volcanism). If there is a large population of impact craters, then the surface is ancient and Venus is characterized by conduction like the Moon, and Mercury, rather than plate recycling and hot spot volcanism. Alternatively, if there is a large population of volcanic craters, then the surface is younger and other mechanisms of heat transfer likely dominate. Previous studies have emphasized various aspects of the observational, theoretical, experimental, and comparative planetological studies of cratering on Venus, and several have reached divergent opinions concerning the age of the Venus surface. A major source of uncertainty in previous studies is the possible inclusion of circular features of nonimpact (volcanic or tectonic) origin in the so called impact crater population. A classification scheme of circular features on Venus is developed in order to further distinguish their origin and distribution.
