We describe a low cost optical temperature sensor that is simple to manufacture. The sensor is constructed by simple soaking of paper in a solution of the temperature sensitive luminescent indicator Ru(phen) 3 and subsequent lamination of the dried paper. Lamination prevents O 2 diffusion to the indicator and thus eliminates O 2 cross-sensitivity. The temperature sensitivity was up to −2% change in luminescence lifetime per K, a t 90 response time of 10 s. Besides luminescence lifetime based measurements, the sensor is well suited for ratiometric imaging with simple RGB cameras, where the temperature dependent red luminescence can be referenced by the blue luminescence of the optical brightener in the paper. ZnO-organic hybrid white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) were demonstrated on a paper substrate. The configuration used for ZnO-organic hybrid WLEDs consists a layer of poly (9,9)-(dioctylfluorene) (PFO) on poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) on n-type ZnO nanorods grown by a low-temperature chemical aqueous method on paper substrate. Room temperature photoluminescence, electroluminescence, and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra reveal a broad visible region covering the range from 420 to 800 nm. By using room temperature-CL, we got luminescence information, especially to verify the origin of specific emissions, the internal absorption of the ultraviolet and the spatial distribution of radiative defects. It was observed that the visible wavelength range depends on the penetration depth of the excitation. This suggests that the concentration of deep levels responsible for the visible luminescence is at the sample surface to a depth of 1-2 µm when using an accelerating voltage up to 20-30 kV. The results indicate that demonstration of WLEDs on paper substrate with reasonable electrical performance greatly influences the reduction of substrate cost, furthermore, this may open way to fabricate optoelectronics devices on disposable substrates for large-area applications. ISO brightness, fluorescence spectra, and the fluorescence integrated intensity of papers from domestic and foreign manufacturers were studied. The contrast index of the tested paper samples, which is defined as the ratio of the ISO brightness to the paper integrated fluorescence intensity in the spectral range from 380 to 700 nm, was estimated. The historical paper samples from XIII–XIX c. are characterised by means of techniques of the optical spectroscopy. The influence of pulsed laser cleaning by means of the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm on the spectra and also cleaning results of stained paper documents are reported and considered. In the absorption spectra, the minima around 280 and 370 nm are identified and luminescence reveals a characteristic band centred around 430 nm. The laser cleaning diagnosed by the recording of the LIF spectra with 266 nm excitation shows a profile of increasing intensity and preserved structure. The LIPS spectra reveal sharp emission lines recorded at 612.5, 644.2, 646.5, 671, 714.9, 720.2 nm (Ca I), 589.4, 616.4, 780 nm (Na I), and 766.5: 769.9 nm (Mg I) which are ascribed to the surface contaminations. The intensity decrease of these peaks is in accordance with successive laser pulses and monitors the cleaning progress of the stained paper. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• Ultrasensitive detection limit can reach as low as 0.01 ppm for riboflavin. • Just need a single droplet for detection using this indicator paper. • In-situ dual detection of riboflavin and pH with same droplet and indicator paper. • Excellent self-clean property makes droplet easy to remove and brings recyclability. Traditional indicator paper is disposable after use, requires a large number of target solutions and can only detect one item. In this study, recyclable upconversion-fluorescence indicator papers consist of upconversion nanorods and plasmonic nanostructures are fabricated by electrospinning. Human-body fluids containing different riboflavin concentration and pH are used as target solution, because these two items are usually detected in clinic to distinguish ambiguous diseases but often performed by two different testing processes that inevitably need more target solutions. Significantly different from conventional detecting system, this recyclable indicator paper can simultaneously achieve riboflavin and pH detections by using only a single droplet of target solution. As low as 0.01 ppm riboflavin can be sensitively detected, which is superior to most reported detection limit of fluorescence sensor. Moreover, this indicator paper can detect a single droplet (~10 μl) rather than a large amount of target solution (>1 ml) needed by traditional detecting system, and the pH can also be simultaneously in-situ detected using the same indicator paper.
