High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) has been regarded as a risk predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite there are many methods to detect hs-CRP, quantitative, rapid, convenient, multiplex and highly sensitive measurement of it is still a challenge for point-of-care applications. In this study, we developed a paper-based ELISA to detect hs-CRP and the sensitive chemiluminescence was applied as detection signal. In this developed assay method, CRP concentration and chemiluminescence intensity were linearly correlated (r = 0.999) with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.49 ng mL -1 , which was comparable to that of conventional ELISA and superior to most of the current reported POCT methods for detection of hs-CRP. The precision of the assay was confirmed for low coefficient of variations, less than 7% for intra-assay and less than 10% for inter-assay. In clinical sample analysis, the results of hs-CRP detected by this assay were in good accordance with which obtained by commercial high sensitivity ELISA kit for in vitro diagnosis (r = 0.975). This assay required only 4 μL of sample and could be finished in less than 30 min. Chemiluminescence signal amplification (CLSA) is of huge interest because of its sensitive detection in various applications such as food analysis, biomedical diagnosis and environmental monitoring. Due to this, there is a manifold attention to develop rapidly prototyped and miniaturized devices for CLSA. In this context, herein, a novel CLSA approach is demonstrated on a 3D printed microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPADs), fabricated using Fused deposition modeling (FDM) printing technology. Influence of working temperature, ranging 30 °C-110 °C, on CL signal generation from well-established Luminol/Co +2 - H 2 O 2 reaction was analyzed using a screen-printed flexible heater onto the 3D printed reaction platform. A smartphone-based capturing/detection system provided the amenability for a point-of-care testing system. For the first time, strong and stable CLSA was found with about 255% ± 5% increase in its signal intensity without using any additional external enhancers. The on-site working temperature was directly in proportional to the intensity of CL signal generated from Luminol/Co +2 - H 2 O 2 reaction under optimum conditions, wherein the device had a wide linear range from 50 nM to 1 μM with a detection limit of 35 nM for H 2 O 2 detection. The reliability of the developed amplification method was tested for practicability to detect the concentration of H 2 O 2 in milk as real sample analysis. β-Agonists are illegal feed additives in the feed industries of many countries, especially China. Here, we report a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) coupled with the chemiluminescence (CL) method to provide the sensitive, simple and rapid quantitative detection of β-agonists in swine hair samples. In this study, we found that the β-agonists diminished the CL generated by the reaction of K3[Fe(CN)6] and luminol on μPAD, which was different from that observed in the aqueous solution, and the degree of diminishment was proportional to the concentration of β-agonists. The possible mechanism was discussed as well. Also, this detection method showed a wide linear range (from 4.0 × 10-8 to 1.0 × 10-5 mol L-1) and low limit of detection (2.0 × 10-8 mol L-1) with a low consumption of samples and reagents. Satisfactory recovery values (from 78% to 95%) were achieved. Therefore, our μPAD CL sensor will be favorable to develop a miniaturized instrument for the on-site analysis of β-agonists in swine hair samples.

Since the introduction of paper-based analytical devices as potential diagnostic platforms a few decades ago, huge efforts have been made in this field to develop systems suitable for meeting the requirements for the point-of-care (POC) approach. Considerable progress has been achieved in the adaptation of existing analysis methods to a paper-based format, especially considering the chemiluminescent (CL)-immunoassays-based techniques. The implementation of biospecific assays with CL detection and paper-based technology represents an ideal solution for the development of portable analytical devices for on-site applications, since the peculiarities of these features create a unique combination for fitting the POC purposes. Despite this, the scientific production is not paralleled by the diffusion of such devices into everyday life. This review aims to highlight the open issues that are responsible for this discrepancy and to find the aspects that require a focused and targeted research to make these methods really applicable in routine analysis.

In this work, copper(ii)-containing metal-organic xerogels (Cu-MOXs), which were composed of copper as the central ion and 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxylic acid as the ligand, were quickly synthesized by a mild facile strategy. The Cu-MOXs exhibited superior catalytic performance for the luminol-H 2 O 2 chemiluminescence (CL) system. The possible mechanism was studied via CL spectra, UV-Vis absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR). Since dopamine (DA) can inhibit the reaction of this system, a sensitive paper-based CL device for the detection of DA was established. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the linear range of this method was 40-200 nM with a detection limit of 10 nM. The proposed method was used for the determination of DA in urine samples.

The present comment concerns the correct presentation of the equations giving the CW-OSL intensity in the case of second- and general-order kinetics. Those equations have also been published with their wrong formulation in two eminent books in their topic. Dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde was re-evaluated as a wet contact reagent for the treatment of latent fingermarks on porous substrates. A new formulation (consisting of 0.028 g p-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde, 0.84 mL glacial acetic acid, 6.2 mL ethyl acetate and 0.993 L 40-60 °C petroleum spirits) provides quick, sensitive and robust luminescent ridge detail within 3 h of treatment on both plain and thermal paper. Point-of-care and in-field technologies for rapid, sensitive and selective detection of molecular biomarkers have attracted much interest. Rugged bioassay technology capable of fast detection of markers for pathogens and genetic diseases would in particular impact the quality of health care in the developing world, but would also make possible more extensive screening in developed countries to tackle problems such as those associated with water and food quality, and tracking of infectious organisms in hospitals and clinics. Literature trends indicate an increasing interest in the use of nanomaterials, and in particular luminescent nanoparticles, for assay development. These materials may offer attributes for development of assays and sensors that could achieve improvements in analytical figures of merit, and provide practical advantages in sensitivity and stability. There is opportunity for cost-efficiency and technical simplicity by implementation of luminescent nanomaterials as the basis for transduction technology, when combined with the use of paper substrates, and the ubiquitous availability of cell phone cameras and associated infrastructure for optical detection and transmission of results. Luminescent nanoparticles have been described for a broad range of bioanalytical targets including small molecules, oligonucleotides, peptides, proteins, saccharides and whole cells (e.g., cancer diagnostics). The luminescent nanomaterials that are described herein for paper-based bioassays include metal nanoparticles, quantum dots and lanthanide-doped nanocrystals. These nanomaterials often have broad and strong absorption and narrow emission bands that improve opportunity for multiplexed analysis, and can be designed to provide emission at wavelengths that are efficiently processed by conventional digital cameras. Luminescent nanoparticles can be embedded in paper substrates that are designed to direct fluid flow, and the resulting combination of technologies can offer competitive analytical performance at relatively low cost.

Dual-signal amplification strategy for ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) multiplexed immunoassay on microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μ-PADs) was demonstrated. This dual-signal amplification technique was achieved by employing graphene oxide-chitosan/gold nanoparticles (GCA) immunosensing platform and [4,4'-(2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene)bis(ethyne-2,1-diyl) dibenzoic acid] (P-acid) functionalized nanoporous silver (P-acid/NPS) signal amplification label. For further low-cost and disposable applications, battery-triggered constant-potential ECL (+1.0V for P-acid label (vs. Ag/AgCl auxiliary electrode)) was applied on this paper-based immunodevice with the aid of a home-made voltage-tunable power device, allowing the traditional electrochemical workstation to be abandoned. We found that two tumor markers could be sequentially detected in the linear ranges of 0.003-20 and 0.001-10ngmL(-1) with the detection limits down to 1.0 and 0.8pgmL(-1), respectively, by simply reversing the connection mode on two working electrodes. The results exhibited excellent precision and high sensitivity of such immunoassay, and it also demonstrated that this battery-triggered ECL paper-based immunodevice could provide a rapid, simple and simultaneous multiplex immunoassay with high throughput, low-cost and low detection limits for point-of-care testing., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The ligands employed in this work were poly(sodium acrylate), working as polymeric matrix, and 1,10-phenanthroline, taking advantage of its antenna effect. Possibilities of color display were further enhanced by incorporating a cationic polyfluorene with blue emission. This strategy allowed for obtaining cyan and magenta, besides the aforementioned colors. Uncoated cellulose paper was impregnated with the resulting luminescent inks, observing a strong hypsochromic shift in excitation wavelength upon drying. Hence, while a cheap UV-A lamp sufficed to reveal the polyfluorene’s blue emission, shorter wavelengths were necessary to visualize the emission due to lanthanide ions as well. The capacity to reveal, with UV-C radiation, a full-color image that remains invisible under natural light is undoubtedly useful for anti-counterfeiting applications. Furthermore, both lanthanide ion complexes and polyfluorenes were shown to have their luminescence quenched by Cu(II) ions and nitroarenes, respectively.

Development of a rapid and sensitive method for Aβ(1-42) aggregation detection is of great importance to overcome the limitations of conventional techniques. In this study, we developed a label-free paper-based electrochemiluminescence sensor for amyloid-β aggregation detection toward potential diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The paper-based chip used in the system serves as a low-cost and disposable detection method. In this detection platform, the bonding of [Ru(phen) 2 dppz] 2+ to Aβ(1-42) aggregates results in enhanced electrochemiluminescence due to the change in the polarity of the microenvironment when [Ru(phen) 2 dppz] 2+ intercalated into the β-sheets during oligomerization. The oligomerization process of Aβ(1-42) can be monitored in real time by the novel method, and as low as 100 pM equivalent monomer concentration of Aβ(1-42) could be detected simultaneously. In addition, the cerebrospinal fluid of transgenic AD model mice was tested by this method, which is highly consistent with genetic identification. In addition, we demonstrated that this detection platform could be a potential new method for the screening of Aβ(1-42) aggregation inhibitors, highlighting the practical application capacity of this platform. The platform is label free, low cost and sensitive. The increasingly wide-spreading falsification of documents, clothing, and packaging has a negative impact on every aspect of the global markets. Therefore, the development of high-quality strategies for materials protection has become a big challenge. Thus, this work presents novel anti-counterfeiting lyocell fibres, exhibiting bright green or yellowish up-conversion emission upon dual-range excitation, using either 975-nm or 1532-nm NIR laser radiation. The up-converting cellulose fibers were prepared by introducing lanthanide-doped core@shell nanoparticles β-NaYF4: Yb3+, Er3+@β-NaYF4 into the cellulose matrix. The spinning process of fibres was based on N-methylmorpholine N-oxide method, environmentally friendly because of the reusable reagents used. The prepared fibres were incorporated into the paper mass, forming a luminescent paper as a proof of concept for the multi-modal protection of documents. The luminescent fibres have considerable application potential as anti-counterfeiting composite materials with excellent performance, which are very difficult to imitate or copy, providing a very high level of security.

Porous aromatic framework materials with high stability, sensitivity, and selectivity have great potential to provide new sensors for optoelectronic/fluorescent probe devices. In this work, a luminescent porous aromatic framework material (LNU-23) was synthesized via the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling reaction of tetrabromopyrene and 1,2-bisphenyldiborate pinacol ester. The resulting PAF solid exhibited strong fluorescence emission with a quantum yield of 18.31%, showing excellent light and heat stability. Because the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of LNU-23 was higher than that of the nitro compounds, there was an energy transfer from the excited LNU-23 to the analyte, leading to the selective fluorescence quenching with a limit of detection (LOD) ≈ 1.47 × 10−5 M. After integrating the luminescent PAF powder on the paper by a simple dipping method, the indicator papers revealed a fast fluorescence response to gaseous nitrobenzene within 10 s, which shows great potential in outdoor fluorescence detection of nitro compounds.

Stimuli‐responsive luminescent material‐based rewritable paper has received great attention for its potential application in a wide range of areas from anti‐counterfeiting to information encryption. Herein, a photoluminescence (PL) rewritable paper based on an organic metal halide, trans‐2,5‐dimethylpiperazine manganese(II) bromide (C6N2H16MnBr4) (1), is reported. This 0D organic metal halide hybrid exhibits green emission centered at 548 nm originating from 4T1–6A1 transition of tetrahedrally coordinated Mn2+ ions with a PL quantum efficiency of 82%. Interestingly, complex 1 can be transformed into the non‐emissive hydrated phase C6N2H16MnBr4(H2O)2 (2) by uptake of coordinating water molecules, wherein Mn2+ adopts a quasi‐octahedral coordination sphere. The reversible single‐crystal structure transformation between the hydrated and dehydrated phases can switch the PL on and off. Rewritable PL paper has been fabricated by coating complex 1 on filter paper, which exhibits high resolution and excellent "write‐erase‐write" cycle capability. This study explores trends in the effectiveness of 1,2-indandione/zinc chloride (IND/Zn) for visualizing latent fingermarks on paper substrates of various ages. Preliminary investigation of contemporaneous documents showed that high quality fingermarks could be deposited through incidental handling, although smudging and overlapping were evident. IND/Zn was then applied to incidentally handled documents up to 80 years old and successfully developed potentially identifiable fingermarks, significantly increasing the established timescale for fingermark detection with amino acid sensitive reagents. The results indicate that IND/Zn remains effective over longer periods than has been previously demonstrated, although a comparison between documents of different ages suggest that progressive diffusion of the target amino acids occurs over time, affecting the proportion of potentially identifiable marks. The findings of this study reinforce the applicability of IND/Zn for the detection of historic latent fingermarks on old paper documents.

In this work, two sensitive droplet-based luminescent assays with smartphone readout for the determination of trimethylamine nitrogen (TMA-N) and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) are reported. Both assays exploit the luminescence quenching of copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) produced when exposed to volatile nitrogen bases. In addition, hydrophobic-based cellulose substrates demonstrated their suitability as holders for both in-drop volatile enrichment and subsequent smartphone-based digitization of the enriched colloidal solution of CuNCs. Under optimal conditions, enrichment factors of 181 and 153 were obtained with the reported assays for TMA-N and TVB-N, respectively, leading to methodological LODs of 0.11 mg/100 g and 0.27 mg/100 g for TMA-N and TVB-N, respectively. The repeatability, expressed as RSD, was 5.2% and 5.6% for TMA-N and TVB-N, respectively (N = 8). Liver fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP) is an intercellular lipid chaperone protein that selectively combines with unsaturated free fatty acids and transports them to mitochondria or peroxisomes. L-FABP is a promising biomarker for the early detection of renal diseases in humans. Herein a chemiluminescence method (CLIA) was demonstrated to measure the level of urinary L-FABP in the urinary samples. An anti-(L-FABP)-magnetic beads complex was prepared to capture the analyte target. Sensitivity, precision, accuracy, interference effect, high-dose hook effect of the developed assay were evaluated. Under the suitable experimental parameters, the established method have a wide linear range (0.01-10 ng/mL) and also showed a sufficiently low limit of detection of 0.0060 ng/mL. Besides, the satisfactory recoveries of the method in the urinary were ranged from 97.74%-112.32%, which was well within the requirement of clinical analysis. Furthermore, this proposed method has been successfully applied to the clinical determination of L-FABP in patients who have been diagnosed with kidney disease. The results showed that CLIA could accurately and rapidly determine the urinary level of L-FABP with high-throughput, which could be useful as a new tool to predict complications in patients with kidney disease. Thermal paper is widely used as a print medium for different applications but it constitutes a tricky substrate for fingermark visualization. An earlier work (J Forensic Sci 2015;60:1034) reported how to visualize fingermarks on untreated thermal paper by illuminating the item with a UV‐A light source. In the present paper, the potential of the near infrared (NIR) luminescence has been tested on thermal paper compared to the mentioned method. A controlled study was carried out utilizing eccrine enriched fingermarks. The promising outcomes obtained were further confirmed by performing a pseudo‐operational trial. Data clearly showed that the use of the NIR filter gave better results. Finally, preliminary tests suggested a different mechanism of reaction induced by fingermarks with respect to the one behind the thermal printing. Thus, NIR luminescence represents a refinement to the suite of optical examination processes, including the potential to increase the number of marks recovered in a noncontact, nondestructive way. The present letter to the Editor raises concerns regarding the paper "Fluorescence detection by thiourea based probe of physiologically important sodium ion" published in Journal of Luminescence in 2014, Vol. 154, P. 67–73, 10.1016/j.jlumin.2014.04.011 by Kundan Tayade et al. and reports on failure to reproduce the results of the mentioned paper. • We failed to reproduce the results reported previously; • Sodium ion does not interact with the reported chemosensor; • The results of quantum chemical calculations are dubious; • The compound reported previously might be impure. Abstract Many samples used for luminescence and ESR dating show complex mineralogical structures, resulting in heterogeneous beta dose rates. Ideally, the beta dose rate distribution could be reconstructed using softwares like DosiVox, which can both upload 3D-scans recorded with X-ray tomography and distributions of radioactive elements. However, some minerals often exhibit only small X-ray contrasts making them difficult to distinguish in 3D-scans. For example, quartz and plagioclase have closely similar X-ray characteristics, which limit the applicability of this approach. Here, we introduced a Monte Carlo simulation of beta particles in two dimensions, in order to calculate the dose rate from 2D images. The simulation results are compared between 2D modelling, 3D modelling and standard calculation. The implications for beta dose rate heterogeneity in grains are discussed. Using the "DosiVox-2D" software, we show that 2D scans may characterize complex heterogeneous 3D beta dose rate distributions. This approach could lead to a better understanding of micro-dosimetric phenomena and the improvements in the accuracy of dose rate calculation for heterogeneous samples. The historical paper samples from XIII–XIX c. are characterised by means of techniques of the optical spectroscopy. The influence of pulsed laser cleaning by means of the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm on the spectra and also cleaning results of stained paper documents are reported and considered. In the absorption spectra, the minima around 280 and 370 nm are identified and luminescence reveals a characteristic band centred around 430 nm. The laser cleaning diagnosed by the recording of the LIF spectra with 266 nm excitation shows a profile of increasing intensity and preserved structure. The LIPS spectra reveal sharp emission lines recorded at 612.5, 644.2, 646.5, 671, 714.9, 720.2 nm (Ca I), 589.4, 616.4, 780 nm (Na I), and 766.5: 769.9 nm (Mg I) which are ascribed to the surface contaminations. The intensity decrease of these peaks is in accordance with successive laser pulses and monitors the cleaning progress of the stained paper. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
