We are at a point in technical services librarianship where many of us acknowledge that with so many changes happening, with ideas flying, and new standards swirling around us without any real assurance that any of them will work or will help us to do a better and more efficient job, as staffing and budgets are shrinking and resources are becoming more complex, it feels as though the sky is falling. In this chapter, we share our thoughts and views on the future of traditional technical services and discuss whether there is a future for traditional cataloging, acquisitions and technical services functions.

This project focuses on the study of cataloging as a tool to promote research collections represented in the catalog. Moreover, it is argued that the catalog provides support to the activities of preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage. It started with a qualitative analysis of the bibliographic sources part of the heritage assets of the Cervantes Collection. Rules to be applied were evaluated and the technical process to follow when entering the sources into the database was defined, as well as the creation of an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). As a result, 172 bibliographic records were generated containing information on the different manifestations that comprise the work Don Quijote de La Mancha (Don Quixote of La Mancha) and thus showing the importance of this procedure to facilitate research and dissemination of the Cervantes Collection. An integrated library management system named PMB was used to create the OPAC. It concluded by highlighting the importance of the creation of a catalog that complies with quality standards to promote research on heritage collections, as well as the support the catalog offers to their preservation and dissemination activities.

A study has been performed to evaluate the use of online collective catalogs from university libraries in view of the interface of information retrieval and in the users’ socio-cognitive context. The methodology dealt with the elaboration of an organizational diagnostic study in order to characterize the organizational/academic context of UFSCar’s university libraries, by means of the application of a questionnaire to the directors/responsibles of the three libraries and data collection using the Verbal Protocol technique (PV). The PV was performed with eight undergraduate students from the courses of Chemistry, Biological Sciences and Pedagogy, three of which from the campi of São Carlos and Sorocaba and two from the campus of Araras in the information retrieval, for the information retrieval by the access points of author, title, subject, among others in UFSCar’s collective catalog. The Users from the campus of Araras did not perform information retrieval in Pedagogy, because that campus does not offer courses in Humanities. From the analysis of the data collected by questionnaires, as especially shown by the partial results, there is an absence of training with the users on the use of UFSCar’s catalog by most libraries and the need to increase communication with the users about the dissemination of products and services offered by them. It was concluded that libraries need to actuate systemically, prioritizing the development of an indexing policy that comtemplates the definition of a catalog that reflects the socio-cognitive view of users on information retrieval and in the perspective of the university libraries.

It is a pretty near impossible task to attempt an all encompassing picture of how Nordic public libraries work with different types of social networking tools, or how libraries use traditional web solutions together with web 2.0 applications. Something that is red-hot one year can be technically dated and old half a year later. Continual upgrades, adjustments and improvements are the norm. A telling metaphor for web 2.0 is that it is ‘in permanent beta’ and this is certainly true of library 2.0. Products on show at exhibitions or featured in marketing material do not always reflect final release versions. So, with these reservations I will try to present a picture of the current situation in the Nordic Countries – starting with Sweden as it is the country I am most familiar with. Generally speaking, Integrated Library Systems – which are mainly what we are considering here – include CMS software for publishing web content and an automated library system with modules for cataloguing and circulation. The basic system can be augmented with additional functions and applications designed to promote social networking with and for library patrons.

Today library users often have to cope with different search masks when looking for specific information in catalogues, databases and repositories. One way of making research simpler is to implement a tool based on search engine technology, which covers all integrated sources with only one query. The aim of this thesis is to describe the experiences of libraries in the German-speaking area, currently using Primo by Ex Libris. In detail, the hypotheses are that Primo not only provides better visibility of and access to library holdings, but also makes enquiries easier to handle for librarians. Subsequently, there ought to be changes in the administrative process of libraries, whereby synergy effects could be achieved when using Primo in a consortium. Best practice approaches for other institutions, planning to set up this search and discovery tool, are obtained by comparing information gathered from expert interviews. Therefore, librarians involved in the implementation projects in academic institutions are asked for their opinions. The central questions are whether the expectations of the software are fulfilled and which problems occur during the implementation phase. Compared to the hypotheses the findings are partly surprising, since librarians do not consider Primo as a better search interface for themselves, but see a service improvement for library users, who therefore have a single point of access. Moreover, the analysis highlights that the focus of library work has to change from doing research to manipulating data in order to make search and discovery more convenient for users.

"Make it more like Google" is a refrain that is often heard by students at academic libraries when asked how library catalogs can be improved. According to the annual Beloit College Mindset list for the class of 2010, the word Google has always been a verb. It is not surprising students today turn to the web when conducting research as it is what they are familiar with and what they know. How can academic libraries handle the challenge of changing user expectations? Can open source software be used to meet this challenge? Can library vendors be convinced that systems need to be changed now? This paper will look at the next generation’s expectations of the academic library online public access catalog and possible solutions.

Introduction: This communication explains the creation of the collective monograph catalogue of the Balearic Islands Public Health System. Objectives: Before this project the libraries of the regional Public Health System had no automated catalogue of these monograph batches. We knew that this was a big handicap for our libraries, and thus we needed to create the catalogue in order to improve collection control and the reference batch service. Methods: Primarity we set out the objectives and then we continued with the analysis of the situation in each library, the creation of technical cataloguing guidelines, classification, indexing and reproduction of the project so that we could have a defined timescale. After studying all the software available for cataloguing we chose PMB, which is open access. All the public health system libraries staff participated in the catalogue creation. Results: The publication of the monograph registers from the Public Health System Libraries on a collective automation catalogue. We hope to be able to include the collective acces catalogue in the Virtual Health Sciences Library of the Balearic Islands. Conclusions: The creation of the automated catalogue has resolved the access document problems and improved the library services on offer.

The advent of "Web 2.0" signaled a shift in Internet usability which focuses primarily on the users and their needs. This also means a challenge for libraries. One area where change is essential is the area of the library catalogue or OPAC, the heart and soul of a library. Designers of OPACs have to face the fact that far more people are searching the internet than are using library catalogs and that the library's approach to user service and user interface is not competing successfully against services like Amazon or Google. If libraries want to avoid further marginalization, they need to analyse their concepts. The aim of this thesis is to describe the problems of traditional library online catalogues at universities and how the OPAC can become a more relevant and user centered system. First, a review of current literature is undertaken in order to investigate the issue of the "next generation catalog" and to discuss several solutions like catalog enrichment, Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records and the integration of Web 2.0 applications. Then some exemplary OPACs which implemented Web 2.0 applications are presented. Furthermore qualitative interviews are conducted with librarians who are in charge of an OPAC 2.0. The interviews aim at analysing the state-of-the-art of these OPAC 2.0 projects. The main outcome of this thesis is that "the" OPAC 2.0 does not exist and that each library has specific requirements concerning an online-catalog. The findings suggest that libraries need to evaluate the environment they are dealing with accurately, especially target groups. Due to the fact that there are many attributes for catalog 2.0, decision-makers in libraries should carefully consider which tools and applications are necessary and reasonable.

Web 2.0, the social, interactive and user-oriented web, is an integral component of current web applications. In the context of Library 2.0-motivated service developments, some libraries already have implemented such features in their local online library catalogues. However, many library associations and library service centres that provide union catalogues seem to be reluctant to keep pace with these developments. This thesis gives an overview of existing union catalogues in the German-speaking language area that already use Web 2.0 features. Furthermore, it identifies opportunities and risks when implementing Web 2.0 concepts in a union catalogue based on a market-analysis and in-depth interviews with experts for library systems and union catalogues. The empirical study of this thesis also contains an evaluation of the existing union catalogue of the umbrella organisation of public libraries in Austria, called "Büchereiverband Österreichs" (BVÖ). The result of this thesis includes that providers of union catalogues are aware of the relevance of the new technologies as additional features to improve the usability of union catalogues and to enrich bibliographic data with supplementary content. Still, the implementation of web 2.0 services seems to be hesitant within the German-speaking countries. The main task of union catalogues is still to provide easy and fast access to bibliographic data but web 2.0 concepts will be an important add-on in the future.

The main index/retrieval tool for records of physical objects inside a library is the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). Until now, the services that OPAC catalogues offer are item retrieval, availability status and loan services. The new generation OPAC, exploits the new Web 2.0 technologies (Web 2.0 refers to a second/new generation of Internet services) such as social networking sites, blogs, wikis, and various collaboration and annotation tools which emphasize on the user’s collaboration. The Library of Panteion University has developed a new social catalogue (OPACIAL) which has been enriched with Web 2.0 technologies (http://library.panteion.gr/opacial). Apart from these new features, this new catalogue can retrieve similar records from the digital library by exploiting the unified subject headings policy set by the library in all its resources. Moreover, OPACIAL can better display the records using various views (brief, full) and by using a better information abstraction schema. It can create a faceted browsing index using subject headings, display the record in XML, BibTex formats, export the record to various external social networking sites, etc.

Web 2.0 has raised new expectations from the library users : after reading a book, they wish to rate it, provide some comments or review about it and tag it for themselves or for others. They also expect to discover other interesting books thanks to the contribution of other people. Those functions, summarized under OPAC 2.0, are now provided by several Integrated Library Systems (ILS), at least partially. But, due to the slow development of some products, other paths were also explored: Content Management Systems (CMS) or specific software. CMS does provide the required functionalities like tagging and commenting. Some pioneers thus decided to develop a new Web OPAC based on CMS. Another approach was to build an OPAC that is independent from any ILS and which offers the required functionalities. In this paper, we propose to review the options available for the librarians wishing to offer Web 2.0 functionalities to their users. We also provide a synthesis of our own experience in implementing an OPAC 2.0 into our Library.

In 2004, the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research funded a major terminology mapping initiative at the GESIS Social Science Information Centre in Bonn (GESIS-IZ), which will find its conclusion this year. The task of this terminology mapping initiative was to organize, create and manage ‘crossconcordances’ between major controlled vocabularies (thesauri, classification systems, subject heading lists) centred around the social sciences but quickly extending to other subject areas. This project is the largest terminology mapping effort in Germany. The number and variety of controlled vocabularies targeted provide an optimal basis for insights and further research opportunities. To our knowledge, terminology mapping efforts have rarely been evaluated with stringent qualitative and quantitative measures. This research should contribute in this area. For the NKOS workshop, we plan to present an overview of the project and participating vocabularies, an introduction to the heterogeneity service and its application as well as some of the results and findings of the evaluation, which will be concluded in August.

The working paper focuses on a possible integration of the Dreiländerkatalog (DLK), which stands prototypically for non-subject-specific library catalogs (here called general library access) into the interdisciplinary science portal vascoda. The report discusses internal design variants of vascoda, which illustrate basic considerations for general library access. Section 2 deals with proposals for an extension of the search typology in vascoda. Neither from the literature review nor from internal discussions regarding the content integration or the introduction of search engine technology could a change of the fundamental concept of vascoda (subject-oriented searching) be derived.

The digital project Archivio Digitale della Musica Veneta ADMV (1999-2004) aimed to catalogue, to digitize and to publish (2004-2014 ca.) manuscript sources and recordings of music composed in the Veneto Region in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, preserved in the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice, the Biblioteca Universitaria Nazionale di Torino (music manuscripts) and the Istituto Centrale per i Beni Sonori e Audiovisivi - ICBSA, the former Discoteca di Stato, in Rome (sound recordings), the three libraries who founded the project, whose music catalogues are now in SBN. The article focuses on relevant stages that led in 2002 to an updated ADMV-UNIMARC format, as result of the participation with the IAML and ICCU UNIMARC study groups in the theoretic evolution of the UNIMARC format related to music. The article was published on the former version of the Biblioteca Marciana website, ADMV pages (2005-2014). At the decommission of the OPAC, ADMV digital objects with their metadata were published in Internet Culturale and in OPAC SBN, partly updating bibliographic records of the Biblioteca Marciana and not recovering those of the Biblioteca Nazionale di Torino relating to the works of Antonio Vivaldi.

Federated Search has long been an elusive goal of the library community. Traditionally, Z39.50 tools offered the ability to perform federated searches across library catalogues and other metadata repositories. Now, with the explosion of Web Services and their associated flexibility, the creation of innovative Federated-type searching is made possible. We will discuss these issues, and present an Open Source prototype which uses Z39.50, Web Services, and REST to query a number of databases, including the CISTI catalogue, PubMed, and Amazon. This prototype also allows users to purchase books from Amazon and view full-text articles from PubMed and via CISTI's link resolver.

The libraries as live organisms with objectives, results but also evaluations are able to use statistics as a tool of measurement of efficiency and effectiveness. Until now use of statistics from the libraries in Greece and in international level is focused mainly in the analysis of quantitative variables and belongs in the monodimensional or two-dimensional analysis. With the present work we appear a new model of statistical treatment and analysis of data emanating from the area of academic libraries proposing new, for the libraries' data, methods of multidimensional statistical analysis qualitative and quantitative variables. Methods, as the element's analysis of equivalences and the classification at serial hierarchy, were applied in data emanating from the users' searches in opac in an academic library. The results of methods are presented with the form of determining level and with the tree-structure form and the conclusions that were exported are reported in the behavior of users toward OPAC and in the operation of the catalogue.

The creation of the Union Catalogue (UC) was included in the project of the «Networking of Libraries of Tertiary Education Institutions» of the SPECIAL TRAINING PROGRAM I (EPEAEK I). A workgroup (WG) was created for the study of creation of a UC and the drawing of specifications. The WG recorded the current situation in the Academic Libraries (AL), searched the bibliography, contacted experts from the international field, evaluated the pros and cons of each type, weighed the difficulties and the expectations and having concluded to the type of central UC of «slave» type, drew up the basic bibliographic and technical specifications. According to the results of the WG it was foreseen the utilisation of an existing software with development of additional programmes, and two implementation phases, A) Constitution and homogenisation of the initial database of the UC, and B) Normal operation and update of UC. Moreover, the minimum levels of the bibliographic records were defined, methods and tools for the subjects and names authority files were proposed, the questions of the language of the subjects, the local data, as well as rules for common confrontation of certain categories of works were examined and subjects for training of academic librarians were suggested. Finally the creation of an organisation for the implementation and continuity of UC was proposed after the end of the EPEAEK. The project of the implementation of the UC was included in the EPEAEK II. Based on the specifications of the WG the equipment was installed in the space of the Library of the National Technical University of Athens. The ADVANCE software of Geac was selected, which was installed by ELiDOC. Data were collected from the libraries and samples of 70.000 records were received for tests by 7 representative libraries of various programs, character sets and formats. The ELiDOC developed transformation programs for different coding of character sets, structure of the data from USMARC in UNIMARC and holdings. The necessary changes in the basic software for its adaptation to the requirements of UC were also realised. The librarians of the UC were trained in the operation of ADVANCE. The “UC Designing and Parameterisation Committee” drew up a draft of a scenario for the updating and the functional specifications on the import of records. Based on this scenario GEAC France developed a special program for the management of the records of the UC. Its know-how originated from its participation in the consortium for the drawing of the study on the creation of a UC of the French Higher Education Institutions and the implementation of the UC of French Municipal Libraries was exploited. The basic algorithm of identification and unification of records and the algorithm of management of holdings were designed. The first trials of unification of bibliographic records took place and a part of the operation of the algorithms that had been developed, was checked. The algorithm of unification of subjects was also completed. At the same time seminars on issues more generally and not narrowly on the UC were organised in various cities for cataloguers from all the libraries, in the frame of the Horizontal Action of the Programme. Integrated tests and improvements, mainly concerning the identification algorithm were followed. In May 2003 the implementation of the project was assigned to a coordinator. An action plan was drawn up, for the speeding up of the implementation, in three levels: technical, procedural, supporting. Particular emphasis was given in the final configuration of the algorithms. The systematic tests of all algorithms in three stages were completed: a) with a small number of checked data in all the operations: identification of duplicate records, import of the unique records, creation of a file of records considered as duplicate, unification of duplicate records, comparison between duplicate and selection of main record, management of subjects of duplicate, management of copies of duplicate, b) with bigger files and wider variety of cases and c) in quasi real conditions with bigger files of three catalogues. The interjection of an additional stage for the internal check (self-check or the catalogues for import) and the individualised use of different modules of the algorithm for each case were decided. A checklist was prepared describing in detail the steps to be followed for the librarians of each library and the UC team. All the findings of the trials have been recorded in order to be forwarded to the Permanent Committees of the Thematic and Descriptive cataloguing to prepare guidelines. The launching of the UC website was also planned. The authority files of Subjects and Names of the Library of Congress have already been ordered for remote access by all the libraries-members of the UC. The authority files produced by the National Library have also been prepared for remote access from the UC website. The creation of UC is not only a technical question. As it was foreseen by the study of the WG, a legal entity that will ensure the continuity and viability of the UC will be needed. However this should not be examined apart from the other cooperative activities that take place the same period in the same field (e.g. HEAL-Link). A serious discussion should begin concerning the institutional consolidation of the efforts, achievements and expectations of so many people.

This dissertation investigates card-image public access catalogues (CIPACs) – online library catalogues based on databases of digitized catalogue cards and more or less sophisticated mechanisms for browsing or searching. Solutions of this kind have been implemented by a number of libraries in various countries since the mid-1990s, mainly as inexpensive alternatives to a full retrospective conversion of their old catalogues. The general aim of the study is to build up an informed view of this area, by looking at the present spreading of CIPACs, their characteristics and navigational features, the problems and issues interconnected with their creation and implementation, and the awareness, behaviour and opinions of CIPAC users. In order to achieve these goals, several approaches were used. First, a comprehensive survey of existing CIPACs and their characteristics was undertaken; this also included the implementation and updating of an international CIPAC web-page. Second, the main issues in CIPAC creation and implementation were identified and discussed, based both on the relevant project literature and the answers of 23 libraries to a short unstructured questionnaire. Third, a webbased qualitative survey of 320 users of eleven CIPACs in four countries was conducted. The study shows that the CIPAC approach has to offer much to libraries that cannot afford to convert their large old catalogues as fast as they might wish. However, the absence of sophisticated search options, the problems that users often have with the interfaces offered for navigation, and the features of a past and mostly outdated generation of reference tools that these computerized card catalogues inherently carry suggest that they are at best acceptable as short or medium-term, but not as permanent alternatives to "real" OPACs.

The "Kölner UniversitätsGesamtkatalog (KUG)" - the union catalogue of the University of Cologne - consists of numerous separate catalogues, among them 143 from the libraries of the universities institutes. As cataloguing practices differ between these libraries, eg. regarding subjects headings, we had to develop alternative strategies to offer our users a maximum of homogeneity in a very heterogeneous environment. This process of homogenization comprises not only improvements in the searchability of titles but also in the enrichment with other suitable contents - irrespective of whether they come from our own system or external services. Furthermore we provide interfaces to facilitate the integration of our bibliographic and enriched data in external services. In this way classic catalogue enrichment and mashups converge and lead - in the interest of our users - to new links between titles, additional contents and forward-looking new services.
