Objective: Several studies have demonstrated a significant association between the presence of the ear lobe crease (ELC) and cardiovascular disease. Advanced glycation end‐products (AGEs) can affect the structures and functions of proteins and contribute to the development of diabetic complications. However, few studies have reported the relationship between AGEs and ELC. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation of skin autofluorescence (SAF)‐AGEage (SAF‐AGEs × age/100) with ELC. Methods: This cross‐sectional study enrolled 6500 eligible participants from two communities in Beijing. Skin autofluorescence (SAF) was used to measure skin AGEs (SAF‐AGEs). SAF‐AGEage was defined as AGEs × age/100. Binary logistic regression analysis and linear regression analysis nested in logistic models were applied to test outcomes. Results: The overall prevalence of ELC with an average age of 62.7 years participants was 57.1% (n = 3714). Age, fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, and lipoprotein cholesterol were all greater in participants with ELC. ELC‐positive participants had higher prevalence of coronary heart disease. Logistic analysis showed a significantly positive relationship between quartiles of SAF‐AGEage and ELC (odds ratio [OR] 1.526, 95% CI 1.324–1.759; OR 2.072, CI 1.791–2.396; and OR 2.983, CI 2.551–3.489) for the multivariate‐adjusted models, respectively. Stratified research revealed that those with a history of diabetes, hypertension, or coronary heart disease experienced the connection between SAF‐AGEage and ELC. Background: The association between the Chinese Visceral Adiposity Index (CVAI) and urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) has not been illustrated. The current study aimed to investigate the association between CVAI and UACR and to compare the discriminative power of CVAI, triglyceride, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR) with UACR in the Chinese community population. Methods: This study included 34 732 participants from the REACTION (Risk Evaluation of cAncers in Chinese diabeTic Individuals) study. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to detect the association between CVAI, triglyceride, BMI, WC, WHR and UACR. Results: Binary logistic regression analysis showed that, after adjusting for potential confounders, in women, CVAI (odds ratio [OR]:1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01–1.34) and triglyceride (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.04–1.33) were associated with UACR, whereas BMI, WC, and WHR were not associated with UACR; in men, CVAI (OR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.02–1.50), WC (OR: 1.21, 95% CI 1.00–1.48), and triglycerides (OR: 1.18, 95% CI 0.97–1.44) were associated with UACR, whereas BMI and WHR were not associated with UACR. Stratified analysis showed that the correlation between CVAI and UACR was stronger in the population with 5.6 ≤ fasting blood glucose (FBG) <7.0 or 7.8 ≤ post‐load blood glucose (PBG) <11.1 mmol/L, FBG ≥7.0 or PBG ≥11.1, systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg. Conclusions: In the Chinese general population, CVAI and UACR were significantly associated in both genders. Background: Urinary albumin‐creatinine ratio (UACR) is a sensitive marker of kidney injury. This study analyzed the prevalence of different metabolic phenotypes and investigated their relationship with UACR in Chinese community adults. Methods: This study involved 33 303 participants over 40 years old from seven centers across China. They were stratified into six groups according to their body mass index (BMI) and metabolic status: metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), metabolically healthy overweight (MHOW), metabolically healthy obesity (MHO), metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MUNW), metabolically unhealthy overweight (MUOW), and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). Increased albuminuria was defined as a UACR ≥30 mg/g. Results: The percentages of MHNW, MHOW, MHO, MUNW, MUOW, and MUO were 27.6%, 15.9%, 4.1%, 19.8%, 22.5%, and 9.6%, respectively. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the MHO group (odds ratio [OR] 1.205; 95% CI, 1.081‐1.343), MUNW group (OR 1.232; 95% CI, 1.021‐1.486), MUOW group (OR 1.447; 95% CI, 1.303‐1.607), and MUO group (OR 1.912; 95% CI, 1.680‐2.176) were at higher risk of increased albuminuria compared to the MHNW group. Subgroup analysis indicated that the risk of increased albuminuria was further elevated among regular smokers in men aged 40 to 55 years old with abdominal obesity. Conclusions: Among Chinese community adults, increased albuminuria was associated with increased BMI whether metabolism was normal or not, and those with abnormal metabolism were at greater risk of increased albuminuria than those with normal metabolism. Aims: The aims of this study were to evaluate the associations of metabolic abnormalities with incident diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and to explore whether dyslipidaemia, particularly high fasting triglyceride (TG), was associated with the development of DKD. Methods: In total, 11 142 patients with new‐onset type 2 diabetes with baseline estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2 were followed up during 2011‐2016. Incident DKD was defined as eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 at follow‐up. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the relationship of metabolic abnormalities at baseline and at follow‐up with risks of DKD. High TG was defined by TG ≥1.70 mmol/L. Low high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐c) was defined by HDL‐c <1.0 mmol/L for men or <1.3 mmol/L for women. Results: Participants who developed DKD had higher levels of waist circumference and systolic blood pressure, and lower levels of HDL‐c at both baseline and follow‐up visits. The DKD group also had higher levels of post‐load plasma glucose and TG at follow‐up. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that both high TG at baseline [odds ratio (OR) = 1.37, p =.012) and high TG at follow‐up (OR = 1.71, p <.001) were significantly associated with increased risks of DKD. Patients with high TG levels at both baseline and follow‐up had higher risk of DKD compared with constantly normal TG (OR = 1.65, p <.001) after adjustment for covariates. Conclusions: In a large population of patients with new‐onset type 2 diabetes, a high TG level was an independent risk factor for the development of DKD. Background: Data are limited with regard to the association between low‐grade albuminuria (below the threshold of microalbuminuria) and high cardiovascular risk in normoalbuminuric Chinese adults free of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: A total of 32 650 participants aged over 40 years from seven regional centers in China were included in this study. The single‐void first morning urine sample was collected to measure the urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) and the data were divided into sex‐specific quartiles. The Framingham Risk Score (FRS) was used to identify participants at high risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD) over the next 10 years and the association between low‐grade albuminuria and high 10‐year Framingham risk for CHD (FRS ≥20%) was investigated. Results: Among males and females, the prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors (diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia) increased markedly with the elevation of UACR quartiles. Logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratios (ORs) for high 10‐year risk of CHD increased significantly from the second quartile in males (UACR: 4.78 ~ 7.53 mg/g, OR = 1.21, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05‐1.40) and the third quartile in females (UACR: 9.13 ~ 15.04 mg/g, OR = 3.07, 95% CI: 1.75‐5.40). Stratified analysis showed that in males, the association was especially pronounced in elderly, overweight/obese participants and those without diabetes and hypertension whereas in females, the association was especially pronounced in elderly, overweight/obese participants and those without diabetes and with hypertension. Introduction: Although diabetes is associated with hypertension, whether high blood glucose levels promote hypertension remains controversial. In this study we compared the predictive power of fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h postprandial blood glucose (2hPG), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) for the development of hypertension. Methods: This study was a substudy of the REACTION study, an ongoing longitudinal cohort study investigating the relationship of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes with the risk of cancer in an urban Northern Chinese population in Beijing. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) after adjustment for risk factors for hypertension, including age, sex, body mass index, and triglycerides. Results: Among the 3437 participants, 497 developed hypertension during the 4-year follow-up. The logistic regression analysis showed that elevated FPG and 2hPG levels (FPG: OR 1.529; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.348–1.735; 2hPG: OR 1.144; 95% CI 1.100–1.191), but not HbA1c, were independent risk factors for the development of hypertension. In the highest quartile of FPG and 2hPG levels, the multivariable-corrected ORs were 2.115 (95% CI 1.612–2.777) and 2.346 (95% CI 1.787–3.080), respectively, compared with the lowest quartile. The adjusted models showed no significant correlations between quartile HbA1c levels and the development of hypertension. Conclusion: Higher FPG and 2hPG levels, but not HbA1c levels, are independent risk factors for developing hypertension in an urban Northern Chinese population. Background: Dyslipidemia contributes to the pathogenesis of renal dysfunction. Previous research demonstrated that triglycerides (TG), instead of other individual lipid indexes, has a significant link with elevated urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR). However, it is unclear whether lipid ratios are superior indicators of increased UACR compared with TG. This research is to determine whether there are close relationships of lipid ratios with UACR in a general population. Methods: 35,751 participants from seven centers across China were enrolled. UACR equal or higher than 30 mg/g was recognized as increased albuminuria. The associations of TG, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)/ high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), TG/HDL-C and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C)/HDL-C with increased UACR were evaluated by linear and logistic regression analyses in females and males separately. Results: There were 3692 (14.8%) female subjects, and 1307 (12.0%) male subjects characterized as having increased UACR. There were significantly differences in TG/HDL-C and non-HDL-C/HDL-C between the normal UACR group and the increased UACR group, while LDL-C/HDL-C was not. Furthermore, linear regression analysis was implemented and showed that TG and TG/HDL-C were both positively related to UACR even after a variety of potential confounders were adjusted regardless of sexes, while the correlation between non-HDL-C/HDL-C and elevated UACR were only significant in females. Further analyses utilizing logistic regression demonstrated that compared with non-HDL-C/HDL-C and TG, TG/HDL-C showed the strongest association with increased UACR (quartile 1 of TG/HDL-C as a reference; OR [95% CI] of quartile 4: 1.28 [1.13–1.44] in women, 1.24 [1.02–1.50] in men) after fully adjusting for potential confounding factors. Stratified analyses revealed that in males who were overweight and in females who were overweight or over 55 years or had prediabetes or prehypertension, TG/HDL-C had significant associations with abnormal UACR. Background: The correlation between remnant cholesterol (RC) and urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) has not been illustrated. The present study aims to explore the correlation between RC levels and UACR in Chinese community adults. Methods: This study included 35 848 participants from a cohort study (REACTION). The UACR data were divided into three groups: UACR <10 mg/g, 10 ≤UACR<30 mg/g, and UACR ≥30 mg/g groups. RC was divided into two groups, according to the 75th percentile: <75% group and ≥75% group. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between RC and UACR. Results: The RC exhibited an adjusted odds ratio that was significant in models 1‐5. Although all confounders were corrected in model 5, RC and UACR were still significantly correlated， and the correlation was more significant in females，when compared to males (odds ratio [OR]: 1.117, 95% CI: 1.063‐1.176, P < 0.001 for all subjects; OR: 1.092, 95% CI: 1.128‐1.161, P = 0.004 for females; and OR: 1.085, 95% CI: 0.998‐1.194, P = 0.088 for males). The RC was significantly correlated with UACR for subjects with 5.6 ≤ fasting blood glucose < 7.0 or 7.8 ≤ post‐load blood glucose < 11.1 mmol/L, 24 ≤ body mass index (BMI) < 28 kg/m2, 120 ≤ systolic blood pressure < 140 and/or 80 ≤ diastolic blood pressure < 90 mm Hg. Conclusions: In the Chinese community, RC is highly correlated with UACR, and the correlation is more significant in females compared with males. Background. The burden of chronic kidney disease is increasing substantially worldwide. Neck circumference (NC), an anthropometric index for upper-body adiposity, has been recognized as an indicator of cardiometabolic diseases. However, the association between NC and renal dysfunction has not been fully disclosed. Objectives. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between NC and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in the general population in China. Methods. A total of 8805 participants (3322 men and 5483 women) were enrolled in this study. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the association between NC and eGFR. The male and female subjects were divided into four groups according to the NC quartiles. The primary outcome was defined as an eGFR ≤ 90 mL / min / 1.73 m 2 . Results. Logistic regression analysis revealed that in both sexes, higher NC was significantly associated with a higher risk of decreased eGFR even after fully adjusting for age, other anthropometric indexes, traditional risk factors for chronic kidney diseases, and sociologic risk factors (quartile 1 as a reference; the odds ratios [95% confidence intervals] were as follows: quartile 2, 1.26 [0.99-1.59]; quartile 3, 1.40 [1.07-1.83]; and quartile 4, 1.71 [1.22-2.38], in men; quartile 2, 1.14 [0.95-1.37]; quartile 3, 1.31 [1.03-1.66]; and quartile 4, 1.32 [1.04-1.68], in women). Stratified analyses suggested that the association was significant among subjects with prediabetes or normal serum uric acid levels and those without cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Among subjects with CVD, the association persisted only in males. When the subjects were stratified according to blood pressure or BMI, the association persisted among male subjects with abnormal blood pressure and was strengthened among male subjects who were overweight/obese, while the association disappeared among female subjects. Conclusions. NC is independently associated with the risk of decreased eGFR in the general population in China, indicating that NC could contribute to renal dysfunction risk assessment. Background: Both lipid and glucose abnormalities are associated with hypertension (HTN). However, it is unclear whether the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is associated with HTN. Therefore the aim of this study is to investigate the association of the TyG index and HTN and to compare the discriminative power of the TyG index, lipid, glycemic parameters for the risk of HTN in elderly individuals. Methods: The present study was nested in a longitudinal (REACTION) study from May 2011 to December 2011, which was designed to demonstrate the association of abnormal glucose metabolism with the risk of cancer in the Chinese population. In total, 47,808 participants were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The TyG index was divided into five groups: the < 20% group, the 20–39% group, the 40–59% group, the 60–79% group and the ≥ 80% group, according to quintile division of the subjects. Three multivariate logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between the TyG vs. lipid parameters, glycemic parameters and HTN. Results: Multivariate logistic regression analysis shows that compared with lipid and glycemic parameters, the TyG index remains significantly associated with HTN in either total subjects or subjects separated into men and women (odds ratio (OR) 1.33, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18–1.51, p < 0.0001 in total subjects; OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.11–1.74, p = 0.0042 in men; OR 1.28, 95% CI 1.11–1.49, p = 0.0010 in women). In a stratified analysis, an elevated TyG index is significantly associated with HTN in the subgroup of the oldest age (≥ 65) (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.30–2.14, p < 0.0001), as well as with obesity (Body mass index (BMI) ≥ 28 kg/m2) (OR 1.85, 95% CI 1.29–2.66, p = 0.0009) or lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (< 90 mL/(min·1.73 m2)) (OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.33–2.21, p < 0.0001). Conclusion: The TyG index is significantly associated with HTN and shows the superior discriminative ability for HTN compared with lipid and glycemic parameters in the Chinese elderly population. Background: Sleep duration affects health in various ways. The objective of the present study was to investigate the relationships among sleep duration, daytime napping and kidney function in a middle-aged apparently healthy Chinese population. Methods: According to self-reported total sleep and daytime napping durations, 33,850 participants who were 38–90 years old and recruited from eight regional centers were divided into subgroups. Height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, blood pressure, biochemical indexes, fasting blood glucose (FBG), postprandial blood glucose (PBG), HbA1c, creatinine and urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) were measured and recorded for each subject. Microalbuminuria was defined as UACR ≥30 mg/g, chronic kidney disease (CKD) was defined as eGFR <60 ml/min, and hyperfiltration was defined as eGFR ≥135 ml/min. Multiple logistic regression was applied to investigate the association between sleep and kidney function. Results: Compared to sleeping for 7–8 h/day, the ORs for microalbuminuria for sleeping for >9 h/day, 8–9 h/day 6–7 h/day and <6 h/day were 1.343 (1.228–1.470, P<0.001), 1.223 (1.134–1.320, P<0.001), 1.130 (1.003–1.273, P = 0.045) and 1.140 (0.908–1.431, P = 0.259), respectively. The eGFR levels exhibited a U-shaped association with sleep duration among subjects with an eGFR ≥90 ml/min and an N-shaped association with sleep duration among subjects with an eGFR <90 ml/min. The OR for hyperfiltration for >9 h/day of sleep was 1.400 (1.123–1.745, P = 0.003) among participants with an eGFR ≥90 ml/min. Daytime napping had a negative effect on renal health. Compared to the absence of a napping habit, the ORs for microalbuminuria for 0–1 h/day, 1–1.5 h/day and >1.5 h/day of daytime napping were 1.552 (1.444–1.668, P<0.001), 1.301 (1.135–1.491, P<0.001) and 1.567 (1.353–1.814, P<0.001), respectively. Millions of people are afflicted by depression, a highly prevalent mental illness with increased morbidity and mortality. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are potential risk factors for depression. We aimed to investigate the correlation of AGEs with depressive symptoms and the severity of depressive symptoms. This study was nested in the prospective REACTION (Risk Evaluation of cAncers in Chinese diabeTic Individuals) study and included 4420 eligible participants. skin autofluorescence (SAF) was used to measure skin AGEs. Depressive symptoms were evaluated by the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association of AGEs with depressive symptoms and the severity of depressive symptoms. Logistic analysis showed a significantly positive relationship between quartiles of SAF-AGEs and the risk of depressive symptoms with the OR [95% confidence interval (CI), p value] of 1.24 (95% CI: 1.03–1.50, p = 0.022), 1.39 (95% CI: 1.15–1.68, p = 0.001) and 1.57 (95% CI: 1.28–1.91, p < 0.001) for multivariable-adjusted model respectively. And SAF-AGEs were associated with the severity of depressive symptoms with the multivariable-adjusted OR (95% CI, p value) of 1.06 (95% CI:0.79–1.43, p = 0.681), 1.47 (95% CI: 1.08–1.99, p = 0.014), and 1.54 (95% CI: 1.12–2.11, p = 0.008) respectively. Stratified analyses showed that SAF-AGEs were significantly associated with the severity of depressive symptoms only in females, overweight people, individuals with hypertension, and those without diabetes and insomnia. Background. Physical activity is effective in preventing chronic diseases. However, the impact of different durations of exercise on human health is unknown, especially among people with diabetes or prediabetes. Objective. To explore the relationship between high MET hours per week and the change in glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in the total population and different subgroups. Methods. A total of 43767 individuals from eight provinces, in China, were recruited. Logistic analysis was used to investigate the association. Participants were divided into 3 groups based on MET hours per week. The primary outcome was an eGFR≤90 mL/min/1.73 m2. Results. The average eGFR was 100.10 (92.43-106.43) mL/min/1.732. Logistic regression analysis revealed that more than 7.5 MET hours per week (equivalent to more than 150 minutes of moderate-intensity of exercise) was associated with the higher risk of the decreased eGFR even after adjusting for confounding factors (7.5 to <21: OR=1.18, 95% CI [1.09, 1.29]; ≥21: OR=1.12, 95% CI [1.05, 1.19], p for trend: 0.0047). After adjusting for confounding factors, in stratified analyses, there still existed a significant relationship among participants aged from 55 to less than 65 years, but not among participants younger than 55 or older than 65 years. Similarly, there existed a positive association between high MET hours per week and the decreased eGFR in participants without diabetes and prediabetes, but not in participants with diabetes or prediabetes, and the interactions of age and diabetic states were found. However, there was no significant difference in women or men. Conclusions. More than 7.5 MET hours per week (equivalent to more than 150 minutes per week or 60 minutes per day of moderate-intensity exercise) was associated with decreased eGFR among participants aged from 55 to less than 65 years and participants without diabetes and prediabetes, but not among participants aged younger than 55 years and older than 65 years and participants with diabetes or prediabetes.
